Shovels & Rope Announce New Album, ‘Manticore’, Share 2022 Tour Dates
- No Comments
Acclaimed rock duo Shovels & Rop e announce the February 18th, 2022 release of their highly anticipated new album, Manticore (Dualtone Music). Originally planned as a stripped-down, acoustic-leaning release, the songs on Manticore were written before the pandemic but recorded during. With the unplanned allotment of time, the celebrated duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst reimagined the initial arrangements resulting in 10 new songs that carve out their own distinct place in the Shovels & Rope canon in both sound and subject matter.
Opening the album is the pulsating first single “Domino,” which looks at the iconic legend surrounding the death of James Dean. The song finds the late actor’s ghost looking down, wondering why America still holds onto him so tightly. The song serves as a tongue-in-cheek commentary on how we look at celebrity in our country. Check it out below…
While “Domino” shoots out of the gate ablaze, Manticore is a more intimate album speaking to the human experience, some of it deeply personal. As fans have come to expect from Shovels & Rope, they hold nothing back. Their character-driven narratives often reflect their own feelings about life, love and our ever-changing society. The latter is summed up on the other end of the spectrum from “Domino” with the contemplative album closer “Human Race”.
In between those bookend tracks, Shovels & Rope exude an emotional sentiment on Manticore that comes from new places and experiences. Hearst and Trent tell a heartbreaking story of a homeless soul in “Happy Birthday Who”, while Hearst sings of a woman trying to maintain her identity amidst the challenges in today’s world in “Collateral Damage”. “Bleed Me” will resonate deeply with every parent as the duo expresses their undying love, yearning and gratitude for their two children and the gifts they receive from them. Alternatively, “Divide & Conquer” imagines a fictional reality where the couple part ways and divide up the children. This is the polar opposite of their beloved autobiographical song “Birmingham”, which will be 10 years old in 2022. The song ends with the reaffirmation of that love and how vulnerable it can be if taken for granted.

Shovels & Rope are an American folk duo from Charleston, South Carolina composed of husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst.
Cary Ann Hearst was born in Mississippi and attended the College of Charleston in 1997. During school she began performing music as a solo artist in local bars and venues and realised her talents for folk music. After graduating she toured, recorded and performed with various groups including Caravan and Borrowed Angels. Hearst first saw Michael Trent performing with his band The Films in 2002 and they began touring with various artists including Jump and Little Children. To begin their careers they each recorded solo albums, Hearst released 'Dust & Bones' in 2006 and Trent released a self titled LP in 2007.
In 2008 Hearst and Trent decided to record as a duo and released the album 'Shovels & Rope' as a co-bill under their individual names but they didn't intend to work together permanently. Hearst and Trent married in March 2009 yet still continued to focus on their solo careers, releasing selected EPs and full lengths before committing to the duo in 2012. They released 'O' Be Joyful' under the name Shovels & Rope and it peaked at #123 on the Billboard 200. They performed the single 'Birmingham' on the Late Show with David Letterman in January 2013 and the Americana Music Honors & Awards awarded Shovels & Rope the accolades of emerging artist the year and song of the year for 'Birmingham'.
Following the new exposure and a heavy touring schedule where the couple play mixtures of original material and joint work, their 2014 album 'Swimmin' Time' went top twenty on the US Billboard charts.
Live reviews
Monday 6th February. Islington Assembly Hall. Shovels and Rope. After North Carolina’s Mandolin Orange taking the stage on Saturday its South Carolina‘s turn tonight with husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst. Again it’s a two piece male female partnership and whilst both bands roots are country, Shovels and Rope certainly put a harder rock feel to it.
First up though it’s a support set from the Matthew Logan Vasquez, leader of the brilliant Delta Spirit. With a pick up band of Glen and Gary who he only met at sound check they rattled through a 30 minute set. It was the classic combination of wailing guitar and Vasquez extraordinary voice. There was even time for a ‘Middle Brother’ song from the short lived supergroup. The perfect starter for the main course.
It’s hard not to describe them as a country rocking White Stripes such is the intensity of the electric guitar drum combination. To describe either as a drummer is doing both a disservice. They alternate between guitar and a drum set up that has a bass, a snare for one hand and the other hand is used to play a mini keyboard.
Vocals are shared between the two and often both take the lead, their voices complementing each other with Trent’s throaty pitch dovetailing with Hearst’s traditional female country twang albeit belted out full bore for the whole show.
They joked that the main souvenir that they bring back from Europe is heavy colds and you can tell Trent is suffering between songs but his performance was no less diminished by this. Lesser players would have bailed.
It’s a ninety minute treat of the finest hard rocking country by two talented musicians. Their intensity and connection can only come from being husband and wife and you sometimes felt you had gate crashed an intimate moment but we were grateful that they shared this with us.
‘St Ann’s Parade’ and ‘Hail Hail’ were highlights for me in a set full of them. They served their state well and matched everything that the North has thrown at them recently.
A great night and keep on country rockin y’all

There is a scattering of applause as husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst step onto the open, outdoor stage. Each armed with a guitar and microphone, the two thank the crowd for coming, then launch into their music. Their voices meld beautifully in sonorous, country rock songs. Both are skilled guitar players, and their talent shows as they strum a series of complex and complementary chords. Michael Trent also does percussion with his feet. The crowd cheer enthusiastically as they finish the song, and calls for encores are happily met with more music. Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst play a mixture of country rock, folk, punk rock, and rock and roll music. The American duo from South Carolina formed Shovels & Rope in 2008, and released their first album, Shovels & Rope, that same year. Their second album, O' Be Joyful, was released in 2012 and was ranked No. 1 on Billboard's US Heat Chart. Their third and most recent album, Swimmin' Time, was released in 2014. They have also released a single, “The Devil Is All Around”, and a music video, “Birmingham”. Shovels & Rope put on a great performance. Trent and Hearst connect with the audience, talking to them throughout the show and encouraging them to participate, and their friendly personalities coupled with their excellent music make for a good night.
The beginning of the set was pleasantly heavy on more of the bands better known songs. After opening up with "Keeper," the duo played a strand of tunes with no breaks, including two of the strongest tracks off the new record with "Bridge on Fire" and "The Devil is All Around."
The later of those tunes best shows off the incredible vocals of Hearst. While the pair mainly harmonize together on all songs, this is one where the female excels with propelling her voice past the appropriate background vocals of Trent. She really had the ability to captivate the room.
The second half of the show was much of the same, with the bands two most popular songs coming at the close of the set - debut self titled track "O' Be Joyful" and lead single "Birmingham." The crowd cheered on as the pair played a quick encore after departing the stage briefly.
Overall, it was a very strong show, especially for just two musicians being in the band. One recommendation I would make though is that the show was a bit long. I would estimate the group played close to, if not more than 20 songs, and I could tell towards the end that the crowd was getting a bit restless. So shorten the setlist a bit and keep the audience wanting more!
But good show for any folk / Americana fan.
Great, lively duo with high harmonies that tear at your soul! Funny and self-deprecating, halfway through their show Carrie Ann paused for a moment "to introduce the band," which is funny because you've already realized that, hard as it is to believe, all of that sound is coming out of just the two of them--the guitars, harmonica, drums, piano, keyboards and vocal harmonies are JUST THEM: Shovels & Rope. They are amazing! I had waited for years to see them and they did not disappoint! Do yourself a favor and go see & hear them when they come anywhere close to YOUR town!
After dealing with the payback.of a late night yesterday I clamber into bed tonight hazey and wrapped up in the knowledge that I got to see this amazing duo do there thing in a gig that was every bit as exciting as I would have hoped and wanted - they seem content in the chaotic sparkle that they ignite ... Listening to their recorded music will be a again new experience with their performance painted colourfully and blissfully through my mind.... Come back soon as you like!
#Shovels&Rope
The hardest working couple in show biz: I never miss a chance to see this duo. They make great music together, and live, their energy, enthusiasm and love are all on display in full color and sound. It is awesome. As someone who works with their spouse every day in a joint venture, I find S&R inspiring. They remind me that we are supposed to be having fun with each other, and that pursuing your dreams is worth some sacrifice. Not bad for the cost of a concert ticket!
This concert was overwhelming, but not in a good way. I expected high energy, clever lyrics, great harmonies, and interesting instrumentals. The energy was high, all right, but the first several songs were loud and electric with bright lights flashing behind them. I couldn't catch a single word. Left after five numbers. Went home to listen to my Shovels & Rope CDs.
If I want too-loud and spotlights shone in my face I'll go see Keith Urban or Metallica.
These two are raising the bar they already set very high. They are multi-talented, serious, and funny. Write and tell great stories, and manage to play multiple instruments each, while singing. Oh, and they are raising a 3 year old on the road. High energy and on the rise. Love them and see them every chance i get.
Incredible performance! One of the most unique duo's ever...spot on vocals...tight musical excution...brilliant song writting! And the intimacy on stage make for a bad ass show. I highly reccomend that you see Shovel and Rope when they cone to your area.
Spread the word and praise Shovels and Rope!
Great show from what is a very talented and entertaining duo. Looking forward to the release of their follow-up album that they teased a couple of tracks from during the show. Already eager to see them perform live again soon.

“It’s not heavy metal, but in our guts, it feels a bit like Heavy Metal,” says Michael Trent of the band’s new album, Manticore due Feb. 18. Next year, 2022, will mark ten years since Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent released their debut album O’ Be Joyful , the first formally billed as “Shovels & Rope.” That decade included the release of six full-length albums, three collaborative covers albums ( Busted Jukebox Volumes 1-3 ), a curated music festival in their hometown of Charleston, SC (High Water), a musical film ( Shovels & Rope: The Movie ) and countless dynamic live performances all over the planet. But it was in the rear courtyard suite of the Decatur St. house belonging to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans where Michael and Cary Ann began polishing up the songs that became Manticore . There was a piano in the room and a little desk. There were piles of scattered and folded papers lying on the bed and copious digital ideas in the form of voice memos. And despite the pounding parades in the surrounding streets, it was quiet in the afternoon.
Months of relentless touring, partnering and parenting had left them threadbare, and the New Orleans stay was intended for finding time to think while renovations were happening at their house on Johns Island, SC. That time coincided with the last Mardi Gras before the world shut down and went into hiding. Sitting at the piano amid the pile of finished and unfinished lyrics, there was a bittersweetness and exhausted peace that belied the coming tribulations. The Decatur St. house would be the last stop on the year-long assembly line of songwriting on the fly. An image here and a rhyme there, scratched into a note pad for later. The next stop was The Whip, the home studio that was a refuge workspace in their backyard. They got back, put the laundry on, digested the news that the world was closed, the tour was canceled indefinitely, and the only thing to do was go inside. Inside the house, inside the studio, inside your mind and inside your time.
The songs and stories that make up Manticore are visceral, bold and at times deeply personal. And while all those adjectives could be used to describe the duo, this time around it rings true in a way that hits differently – or at least harder. Perhaps everything hits harder for everyone these days. And while most of these songs were written before the pandemic, they were all recorded at a time when everyone was inside. It takes aim at the human experience and does so without pulling a single punch: reflections on idol worship, homelessness, social justice, the experience of fierce parental love and marital strife are all on the menu here; and in true American fashion, the helpings are plentiful.
Manticore was initially intended to be a stripped back affair. The songs were written with the expectation that they would feature almost nothing but acoustic guitar, piano and their two voices. But with the time afforded to the band by the complete stalling of their industry, they returned to the recordings and indulged the opportunity to expand the sound of the album with no pressures or expectations regarding the calendar. The most extended amount of time off the road since the band’s inception coupled with the creative outlet and subsequent work/life structure the album demanded created an anchor to some kind of sanity in a world that seemed to be truly losing its mind around them. “I was grateful to have something to work on, to go into the shop every day for a few hours, get into something, exercise parts of my brain and feel excited about something when there really wasn’t a whole lot to feel excited about at the time,” Michael Trent recalls of the process.
The stark personal musings of the songs on Manticore are somewhat contrasted by the opening track “Domino,” with its sleazy menace laced through a pulsing drum beat and Motown piano. It’s a rapid-fire lyrical collage of iconic American imagery depicting the death of James Dean, America’s reaction to it and Dean’s ghost’s puzzled bewilderment to that reaction. However, like all the best Shovels & Rope songs, there is a thematic duality on display, as it celebrates the playful elevation of rock’n’roll culture while exposing some of the ridiculousness of ‘celebrity’. “Collateral Damage” finds Cary Ann Hearst writing from the perspective of a woman who is openly musing about her role and identity as a woman in the modern world and as a mother in a modern family. As we’ve grown accustomed to, in some of their finest storytelling moments, the characters in these songs are often vehicles for their own deeply personal questions and feelings about the world around them. To that end, Manticore , is also unique in the Shovels & Rope catalog as some of the songs directly address their own marriage. “The Show” is an exaggerated version of a real-life discussion in New York City on separating real life from ‘stage’ life, and perhaps nowhere is this laid bare more than in one of the album’s emotional standouts, “Divide & Conquer.” Jokingly referred to as “Bummerham” in the early days of album tracking, the song does what ‘ Birmingham’ did so well before in its embellished version of real-life recollections, but “Divide & Conquer” takes it a step further in openly imagining a fictional alternate reality where things don’t work out, and the children are divided between divorced parents. Dark to be sure, but the thought exercise concludes in a particularly touching self-awareness of how real and honest their partnership is and the desire to come back to that love and consistent force in each other’s lives. ‘Come back to me, here is my armor.’ That directness in addressing challenges in their own relationship for the first time wasn’t on accident. Cary Ann Hearst recalls of those songs, “it was like…no more mister nice guys, the polish is off, the humanity is in…the shiny perceptions or previous ideas of what we are, or are expected to be, are being mildly challenged in some of these songs in a different kind of way. In some ways it’s funny that we are addressing it now because our marriage is stronger than it’s ever been.” Perhaps the most raw and untamed outpouring of deeply personal feelings is in the album cornerstone, “Bleed Me.” Quite simply a love letter to their children, the song holds nothing back in its dramatic display of yearning, unfathomable love, exhaustion and, most of all, gratitude for the transformative experience of parenthood and the gifts that singular experience can bring to a person’s life. “I love how heavy handed it is, a little bit like screaming at the top of your lungs….My heart breaks every time we sing ‘you are the best part.’ That lyric means everything,” Hearst says of the song.
The album closes with the somber reflection of “Human Race”, a despairing ode to life in a troubled headspace. Appropriately, the song is more than just an album closer; it serves as a reminder of what still makes Shovels & Rope wholly unique, even ten years later amidst a sea of their peers. They are still master commentators of the human experience and maintain a rare gift that allows them to address the most gnarly of life’s lows while always keeping an eye on hope, compassion and community. The album’s title, Manticore , at its most simplistic, is a playful combination of a Leo and a Scorpio combined into one beast. A simple google search of the word will bring up depictions that are comical, fantastical, intimidating, aggressive, playful, beautiful and even mildly terrifying. At their best, all of these can be said of Shovels & Rope, but no matter which adjective feels most appropriate in a given song, show or album, it is always powerful. Thankfully, Manticore finds them at their (weary) best. It feels like a hard-won summation of the band’s first act, shedding away notions the public may have had of them or that they had of themselves. The second act of Shovels & Rope looks beautifully weathered and wiser – shining a bright light at the end of this very dark tunnel.

About Shovels & Rope
“It’s not heavy metal, but in our guts, it feels a bit like Heavy Metal,” says Michael Trent of the band’s new album, Manticore due Feb. 18. Next year, 2022, will mark ten years since Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent released their debut album O’ Be Joyful, the first formally billed as “Shovels & Rope.” That decade included the release of six full-length albums, three collaborative covers albums (Busted Jukebox Volumes 1-3), a curated music festival in their hometown of Charleston, SC (High Water), a musical film (Shovels & Rope: The Movie) and countless dynamic live performances all over the planet. But it was in the rear courtyard suite of the Decatur St. house belonging to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans where Michael and Cary Ann began polishing up the songs that became Manticore.
To that end, Manticore, is also unique in the Shovels & Rope catalog as some of the songs directly address their own marriage. “The Show” is an exaggerated version of a real-life discussion in New York City on separating real life from ‘stage’ life, and perhaps nowhere is this laid bare more than in one of the album’s emotional standouts, “Divide & Conquer.” Jokingly referred to as “Bummerham” in the early days of album tracking, the song does what ‘Birmingham’ did so well before in its embellished version of real-life recollections, but “Divide & Conquer” takes it a step further in openly imagining a fictional alternate reality where things don’t work out, and the children are divided between divorced parents.
The album’s title, Manticore, at its most simplistic, is a playful combination of a Leo and a Scorpio combined into one beast.
About Tré Burt
When Tré Burt was signed to John Prine’s Oh Boy Records in 2019, he was one of only two artists – including label mate Kelsey Waldon, to join the label in the past 15 years. Caught It From The Rye, Tré Burt’s debut album was re-released on Oh Boy in Jan 2020. The album showcases Burt’s literary songwriting and lo-fi, rootsy aesthetic, which he honed busking on the streets of San Francisco and traveling the world in search of inspiration. Like label mate and songwriting hero John Prine, Burt has a poet’s eye for detail, a surgeon’s sense of narrative precision and a folk singer’s natural knack for a timeless melody. Caught It From The Rye is an urgent missive from an important new voice in songwriting.
For a songwriter who thoughtfully documents what he sees in the world, 2020, while challenging, was rich with inspiration. The year birthed the single, Under The Devil’s Knee, a song that continues the tradition of outspoken political folk songwriters of yore. It is an incredibly moving protest song tracing the lives of George Floyd, Eric Garner, and Breonna Taylor. Recorded remotely featuring Allison Russell, Sunny War and Leyla McCalla. “Humanity feels like it’s slipping away from us, as a country. I wanted to reinstate the humanity of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Eric Garner and so many other brothers and sisters slain by police in the way I know how. I wanted to immortalize their dignity and make the work easy for future historians and remind the present that no matter what side of the aisle you’re on, this is about actual pain and real human suffering caused by a system of governance that is morally bankrupt. This, I felt was my duty as an American songwriter to do. Music is a powerful force, especially when you put it through a protest song. It makes the fight more tangible. Reframes perspective. None of which entered my mind when writing this, at all. That was out of anger. I wrote this song out of anger. They should all be alive.” – Tré Burt
Tré’s sophomore album, You, Yeah, You builds on his previous work as “he grows ever more sophisticated, empathetic and razor sharp as a storyteller and musical philosopher” – NPR. Recorded in North Carolina with producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Waxahatchee, Nathaniel Rateliff) the album reads like twelve rounds in a ring, summoning the will to fight the unknown rather than surrender to fear and fatigue. You, Yeah, You is a cohesive body of work that clearly illustrates the ever expanding space in which Tré Burt’s voice belongs.
Tré toured in summer 2021 with Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats and Shakey Graves as well as making his Newport Folk Festival debut performance, “Tré Burt blazes his own troubadour path, a powerful and moving debut from a singer poised to become a folk festival mainstay for years to come” Rolling Stone
Following a support tour with Watchhouse, a performance at the venerable LUCK Reunion on Willie Nelson’s ranch, and the 2022 release of the EP Know Your Demons, Burt heads out on his long awaited debut headline tour in the US and Europe and summer festival touring to include Under The Big Sky, Hinterland and numerous other festivals.

Theatres in Moscow
Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.
There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.
A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.
Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.
The Bolshoi Theatre
The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.
If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.
In August the Bolshoi is closed.
The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre
This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.
The Novaya Opera
“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .
Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center
The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.
Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory
These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.
Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)
This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.
