Brightline West

Fast, Clean Connection Between Los Angeles and Las Vegas

A Fast, Simple, Clean Trip Through The Desert

America’s 2nd-largest metropolitan area. The tourist capital of the west. And the only way to get from one to the other is a long, crowded desert drive. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

A high-speed rail corridor between Las Vegas and Los Angeles has been dreamed of ever since Amtrak’s Desert Wind was discontinued in 1997. Initially led by a casino owner under the names DesertXpress and XpressWest, the project kicked into high gear in 2018 when Fortress Investment Group, parent company of Brightline Florida, purchased the project and rebranded it as Brightline West.

Brightline West is ready to connect Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area at speeds exceeding 186 mph.

The Los Angeles to Las Vegas Trip: Long Drives, Crowded Roads

The “City of Angeles” and “Sin City” are already closely connected with an estimated 50 million one-way trips between the two annually.

With a population of over 17 million people, Los Angeles and the surrounding metropolitan areas are an international center for business and industry. Las Vegas, meanwhile, is a top tourism and entertainment destination; the twelve largest hotels in the USA are all located in Las Vegas.

  • 80 or more flights connect the two cities on a typical day
  • 85% of trips are by car or bus over the single roadway connection (Interstate 15).
  • 4.5 hour drive with no traffic
  • 7 hours or more during the weekend rush.

Brightline West aims to connect the two by high-speed train in about 3 hours.

Beyond LA: How Brightline West Connects The Region

The integrated network approach makes the project more than a straight line between two cities. It helps unite an entire region.

Brightline West is utilizing the integrated network approach. At Rancho Cucamonga, the LA area station, Brightline West high-speed trains will connect with Metrolink regional rail, allowing riders access to and from LA Union Station and over 60 other Metrolink stations.

Stations at both ends of the line will connect people coming from all directions. They can connect to

  • Local transit
  • Micro-mobility options.
  • Brightline’s own last-mile ride service (“Brightline+”)
  • Shuttles to and from the major resorts

High-speed service could potentially one day be extended down the San Bernardino line into LA Union Station itself. Brightline West is also designed to accommodate connectivity to Palmdale via the separate “High-Desert Corridor” project, which would provide passengers a link to a separate Metrolink line as well as future California High-Speed Rail service. When California High-Speed Rail is complete, a one-seat ride from Las Vegas to San Francisco will be possible.

What Is Brightline? A Proven Passenger Rail Operator

This project is not Brightline’s first rodeo. Brightline has already developed a major passenger rail project in Florida, which is the first privately-owned and financed passenger rail project in the United States in decades. Brightline knows what it takes to build a new passenger rail line in the United States. But unlike their Florida operation, Brightline is planning to bring true high speed to the United States with Brightline West. Brightline West will operate zero-emission trainsets built to European high-speed rail standards and powered by overhead electric catenary. Trains will exceed 186 mph, potentially the first in the county to do so in revenue service. Track, systems, and facilities will be built to modern European high-speed rail standards, and designed to be compatible with the California High-Speed Rail project.

Where It Stands

Brightline West has been hard at work to prepare the project for construction. Major milestones reached thus far include completion of major land acquisition and lease agreements, including a station site on Las Vegas Boulevard, also known as “the Strip.” Agreements with the Arizona and California highway departments for using the I-15 right-of-way are completed. The bulk of NEPA documentation and approvals for environmental clearance have also been completed, with the outstanding environmental review of the proposed work in the Cajon Pass to be completed at the end of this year.

According to Fortress CEO Wes Edens, Brightline West has already invested $550 million of its own funds in preparing the project for construction. In a recent interview with the Las Vegas Review Journal, Edens stated that the project is now “at the one-yard line” and expected to start construction in 2023.

Frequently asked questions

  • The secret to having a hassle-free flight experience is to pack in advance. Start with the essentials: passport, boarding pass, cash and any vital medications. Next, bring on board items that’ll help while away those hours, like some electronic gadgets or a few magazines. You’ll also want to bring your chargers, a neck pillow and a pair of earphones. And of course, be sure to pop in toiletries like a toothbrush, deodorant and a spare set of clothes.
  • While the list of restricted items differs between air carriers, the general guide to follow is avoid carrying anything sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like box cutters, razor blades, spray paint and fireworks. Sports equipment like ski poles, and objects that could injure passengers, such as guns and swords, aren’t allowed in the cabin either.
  • Comfort should always be your priority when picking what to wear on board. Consider your footwear with care too, as swollen feet and ankles are a common occurrence. Flat shoes which are slightly roomy are always a good idea.
  • Unfortunately, one risk of long-distance travel is developing DVT (deep vein thrombosis), a blood clot condition caused by prolonged periods of inactivity. To prevent this from happening, make the most of every opportunity to stretch your legs and walk around the cabin. Compression socks and tights are another easy way to help lower your risk.
  • Security personnel first need to see that you have a valid passport and travel documents before you can proceed any further. Have them in your hand, ready for inspection.
  • Next up, both you and your hand luggage will be X-rayed. To make the process quick and painless, take off anything that might set the alarms off. Items such as your belt, jacket and headphones will be required to go through the machine.
  • Your electronic devices like phones and laptops will also need to go on a tray for inspection. No need to worry though, you’ll be back online in no time.
  • Any gels or liquids, such as toothpaste or perfume, that you want to bring on board need to be in containers no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters). Also, they all must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
  • Slip-on shoes are a great footwear choice as you’re less likely to be required to remove them when going through security. Hiking boots and other heavy shoes are usually subjected to additional screening.
  • Avoid taking prohibited items in your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp or pointed objects, pack them in your checked baggage. They won’t be allowed on board.

KTNV - Las Vegas, Nevada

Brightline West: Round-trip tickets from Las Vegas to SoCal could cost over $400

round trip train tickets to las vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — How much would you be willing to pay to take a high-speed train between Las Vegas and Southern California to avoid sitting in traffic?

Brightline founder and chairman Wes Edens told the Los Angeles Times round-trip tickets to take their high-speed rail between the two locations could cost over $400. Edens said the company is experimenting with pricing but that right now, prices are similar to airline tickets, meaning the cost changes depending on when you book.

Those prices could eventually come down. For example, when looking at Brightline ticket prices for this weekend, using their rail line between Orlando and Miami, round-trip tickets ranged between $49 and $149.

Federal officials have authorized $3 billion in taxpayer money to help fund the $12 billion project. The company will also have access to $3.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds. Brightline West also previously received $25 million from a separate federal grant to build stations in California. The rest of the funding is expected to be covered by private capital and private activity bonds.

Brightline West

In addition to costs, the project faces other challenges like location. The Las Vegas station would be located near Silverado Ranch Boulevard and Blue Diamond road while the Rancho Cucamonga station would be located about 40 miles away from downtown Los Angeles. Both stations would still require riders to take additional modes of transportation, like taxis or ride-booking services, to reach their final destinations across both cities.

According to Brightline, the average road trip between Las Vegas and Southern California is about four to five hours and the new high-speed rail line will take about two hours.

Documents filed by the company previously revealed Brightline is planning on operating 50 trains per day, 25 in each direction, between Las Vegas and Rancho Cucamonga, and they will depart at 45-minute intervals between 5:30 a.m. and 1 a.m.

Another big question: Is there actually demand for rail travel?

According to public bond filings, Brightline's Florida operations posted an operating loss of $190 million during the first nine months of last year.

Meantime, Brightline West crews are continuing field investigation work in Southern California and Nevada. The updated list of project areas are listed below. Brightline officials said motorists should be cautious when traveling through the following work zones.

  • I-15 median north of Jean, milepost 13-24.5 Crews are doing pothole and survey work will run through Thursday, March 14. Crews are working from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • I-15 median north of Primm, milepost 1-13 Geotechnical boring and survey work will run through Thursday, March 14. Crews are working from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • I-15 southbound lane #1 between milepost 11.5-21 Night work will focus on geophysical testing from Monday, March 17 through Friday, March 22 from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.
  • I-15 from Yates Well Road to Outlet Center Drive Daytime boring is scheduled from Monday, March 11 to Friday, March 15 from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Daytime boring in the shoulder of northbound Old Hwy 58 on-ramp to northbound I-15 is set for Monday, March 11 through Thursday, March 14 from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • I-15 from D Street to Oak Hill Road Daytime boring in the center median and exterior shoulders is set from Monday, March 11 to Friday, March 15 from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Night closures are planned on northbound I-15 exterior shoulders from the Roy Rodgers Drive on-ramp to Mojave Drive off-ramp from Tuesday, March 12 to Thursday, March 14 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • I-15 from Cajon Road to Foothill Boulevard Daytime boring in I-15 center median from Sierra Avenue to the I-210 interchange, and on Cherry Avenue near the I-15 from Monday, March 11 to Friday, March 15 from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Night closures are planned on the I-15 center median in Devore from Thursday, March 14 to Friday, March 15 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Day closure planned on Foothill Boulevard, west of the I-15 interchange in the westbound $1 lane on Friday, March 15 from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The rail line is expected to break ground this year and construction is projected to last about four years and open in time for the Olympics, which are scheduled to held in Los Angeles in 2028. That's the same year that Las Vegas will host the NCAA men's basketball Final Four.

Brightline West to break ground on Las Vegas high-speed rail project

Brightline West plans to break ground next week on its Las Vegas-to-Southern California high-speed train system.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will join Brightline founder Wes Edens and federal, state and local officials from Nevada and California on Monday at the planned Las Vegas station site for a ceremony kicking off construction on the 218-mile rail line.

It will be a major milestone in the project that has been talked about in various iterations for over a decade, with no action occurring over that span.

“This is the physical action that we’ve been waiting for, for decades,” Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft, whose district includes the area where the Brightline station will be constructed. “Finally bringing high-speed rail between Las Vegas and Southern California. It will boost our economy, provide efficient transportation alternatives and continue the success of all that we have worked for. Both for the economic engine of Nevada and the people that live here.”

In December, President Joe Biden announced in Las Vegas $3 billion in federal funding for the project from the Bipartisan Infrastructure law.

Then earlier this year the U.S. Department of Transportation approved $2.5 billion in private activity bonding authority, bringing the total to $3.5 billion after $1 billion was approved in 2021. Private activity bonds are a debt instrument authorized by the DOT for highway or freight projects that allow a private company to benefit from tax exempt municipal bonds.

Buttigieg said at the time of the $2.5 billion bonding authority that the funds would allow Brightline to lay the tracks and create jobs in Nevada and California. Brightline will utilize debt and private capital to pay the remaining costs of the $12 billion rail system.

Brightline has been conducting field investigation work along Interstate 15 in Nevada and California the past few months ahead of construction on the rail line.

Plans call for stations in Las Vegas, to be located on Las Vegas Boulevard near Blue Diamond Road, and in California in the Hesperia/Apple Valley area and Rancho Cucamonga. From the Rancho Cucamonga station, riders can transfer to and from Los Angeles via the Metrolink.

The total trip between Las Vegas and L.A. would be 260 miles long, with an expected travel time of about three hours. Trains are expected to reach speeds of up to 200 mph on the fully electric system.

Brightline plans to have the system built and operating ahead of the 2028 Olympic games in L.A. Brightline already operates intercity passenger rail service in Florida, with several stations including in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

The project aims to benefit tourism, create thousands of jobs between construction and operating jobs, ease traffic congestion on I-15 and eliminate 400,000 tons of carbon pollution each year.

Top 5 airlines flying to las vegas.

Everything was great except for the seat. The backrest would not stay in the upright position.

I usually have a positive experience with Delta. Complimentary upgrades are always nice!

Flight delayed about 2 hrs so it made it a VERY late night

It was a crowded flight. They did the best they could.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

Worst flight in my life. Only was scheduled for a 45 min flight to get our connection flight. It was late by 40 minutes and we missed our connection. Delta was totally useless trying to help and unable to get my family on the next flight because they overbooked it Thus had to get a hotel at my expense and lost a day at Disney as a result. Cost me about a $1000 if you add 2 hotels meals shuttles etc to get thru the day Awful customer service by Delta in Detroit totally useless people

The experience was good and the flight departed on time and landed early

The flight was delayed but we got to our final destination.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Seats in first class on the E175 recline too far back. I was in 2A, and the man in 1A fully reclined almost the entire flight. It took 6-7 inches of space away from me and made it very difficult to work on my laptop.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

Trip was smooth bumpy from the wind but no issues at all the crew attendant was very pleasant and had great customer service

This was a Lufthansa flight. Disappointing main meal. Very rough over Canada and arrival at FRA. IFE was almost unusable.

It got me where I needed it to; not much more. It had no competition so that was why I chose it.

I liked everything about the flight. The service was excellent!

The customer service was excellent! Check-in, baggage check-in, boarding, the flight went very smooth.

Food options were limited which is absolutely embarrassing for a Flight of this size The staff did not come around as much and I am not accustomed to such poor service from American Airlines Drinks I believe were limited to soda and water

Plane took off without me, my stepdad and a dozen other passengers. It went from an hour delay to boarding in 15 montures without notifying anyone. Names were not called overhead. Now I’m missing a day of work and stuck in Charolette overnight paying for a hotel and Ubers out of pocket

I arrived to the airport 2 hours before my American Airlines flight was scheduled to take off. I have TSA pre-check. The airport was crazy packed when I arrived. After momentarily standing in the pre-check line, the TSA agent said that I am not pre-check. Of course I said that I am because I entered my KTN number on all my traveling sites and programs. I had to get out of line and go back to the AA counter to discover that American Airlines did not add my KTN to my boarding pass. I had to call TSA to find out my number, then have AA enter it onto my boarding pass. The emblem would not load onto my boarding pass. By this time, I decided to use my Clear in order to get through TSA but the line was ridiculous long. By the time I made through TSA, I missed my 11:08am flight and was re-booked for the 5:30pm. This is after the AA employee told me I should have gotten to the airport early. AA use to be a dependable airline not I use them only if I have too.

Average - flew with Jet Blue internal and it was far more comfortable and better food and entertainment. Notable difference

Flight from SBP to DFW 1. They rerouted us through PHX 2. Delayed flight out of SBP for 3 hrs so we missed our connection Downgrade on rerouted flight. Back of the plane, center seats, didn't sit together 4. Return flight out of DFW same exact thing. Delayed, missed connection, Downgrade + they lost our luggage! A complete mess.

On the new 319 NEO? seatback entertainment system did not work even when the flight attendant rebooted it. At least I had my cell phone to connect with wifi.

Good flights. Departure and arrivals were on time. DFW was a little problematic in that the Skytrain without prior notice bypassed the Echo terminal so that delayed my arrival at my connecting flight.

Do not eat the bagel! Otherwise, good albeit late, breakfast in first. Boarding downgrade only because flight was delayed due to plane change due to undisclosed problem with original aircraft. I did not use entertainment.

Because I can’t stand very long in one place, I was allowed to reword.

It was a good flight. Of course it was full, but it went well.

Kayak does not know that spirit airlines charged me $70 to fly. But the bag check-in was $89 each way. This is false advertising to lure people. Spirit airlines sends bunch of emails after flight purchases to buy wifi, better seats, priority boarding, secure reserved seats. This is false advertising. Up front pricing. I would of flown jet blue or Alaska airlines.

Every interaction the airline seems to want to find a different way to extract more money from you. The second leg of our journey they wouldn't let us board the plane without taking another $99 for a bag we asked about at the ticket counter and boarded with on the first leg of our journey. Horrible airline, poor culture. Not flying Spirit again.

Didn’t make the connecting flight due to a delay on our first flight.

I felt scam to have to pay $50 additional for my carry on luggage which was free for my other airline.

No basic services such as water, snacks. Internet very expensive. Seats were very small, hard and uncomfortable. Alaskan Airlines, my outbound flight to Boise from Orlando, offered beverage service, a snack, and reasonable priced internet, for the same price as my return trip on Spirit. It had more comfortable seating also.

Awful experience. Both flights were delayed several times with weather but also crew members being the official cause. The vouchers are unusable and insufficient ($50 voucher to fly the same crappy airline is a joke for putting me on a red-eye that landed at 3:00 am). The aircrafts were old and uncomfortable (have a real pocket on the seat, for crying out loud!).

The staff at the counter were very rude and unprofessional

Lower price not worth it. Delayed missed connection. Would have taken 24 hours to get to Atlanta. No takes your vouchers making them useless. Never again.

Horrible. Delay after delay. People yelling and making obseen gestures!

Overall good for being my first time flying with spirit

Not have to pay for every single item to take a flight. Seating and delays sucked.

Flight was cancelled and I had to spend the night in the airport lugging my suitcase around

If you don’t check in 24 hours in advance, they will charge you $110 to check your bag instead of the $30. I did not get an email with this information and did not check in. In addition, my flight home was cancelled at layover and I had to spend the night in the airport, and then have another layover at another airport before making it home. Will not fly frontier again.

Terrible. Seats are bad and the baggage policy is inconsistent

Flight delayed 3 times, resulting in late arrival, rental car place gave car away resulting in increased BS charges because I was late. Frontier blows.

I paid for extra leg room. The flimsy plastic seat underneath the floatation seat did not line up with the arm rests. It seemed as if the plastic part was zip tied on but immovable. This caused severe uncomfortable for the duration of the flight.

Left Denver late, then sat on tarmac 30 min after arrival

Better than I expected but I did pay for a seat and carry on bags ahead of time.

Crew members are very rude and not cooperate with passengers.

30 minute delay due to boarding and settling of a family.
