Gyeongbokgung is the largest, and perhaps most iconic of Seoul’s 5 royal palaces. Built in 1395 to serve as the royal home and political seat of the Joseon Dynasty, it’s survived wars, fires, occupations, demolitions, and restorations during its tumultuous history.

Gyeongbokgung Palace at Night | Photo Spots

You can snap a pic pretty much anywhere inside Gyeongbokgung Palace at night, and be guaranteed a gorgeous result, but here are some suggestions for where to start.

Gwanghwamun Gate | 광화문

There are 4 entrances into Gyeongbokgung, but Gwanghwamun Gate is the one you’ll want to enter at. As the main gate, it’s larger and more ornate than the other 3 gates. It’s located on the south wall of the palace complex, across the street from Gwanghwamun Plaza.

gyeongbokgung palace at night | gwanghwamun gate

Gwanghwamun is the main gate into Gyeongbokgung Palace.

You don’t actually have to be inside Gyeongbokgung Palace to enjoy a stunning night view of Gwanghwamun Gate. You can take pics with all its lit-up glory without even entering the palace.

TIP  |  I rented my hanbok for Gyeongbokgung at night at Hanboknam, because it’s super close to Gwanghwamun Gate and very convenient, but there a ton of hanbok rental shops nearby. Check out hanbok rental shops in Seoul here.

Geunjeongjeon Gate and Hall | 근정전

Once you cross Gwanghwamun Gate, you’ll walk through a grand stone courtyard with three footpaths running through the centre. These lead to Geunjeongjeon Gate and Geunjeongjeon Hall – the main throne hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace.

korea in april | child in korean hanbok at gyeongbokgung palace at night

You’ll can see the Geunjeongjeon Hall, behind Geunjeongjeon Gate.

During the Gyeongbokgung Palace at night event, it’s brightly lit so you can capture pictures even on dark nights. The front of Geunjeongjeon Hall is one of the most popular places to snap pictures, so it can be difficult to get a shot without other people in it.

Try walking around to the rear of the hall, and you’ll likely have plenty of room to get that perfect solo shot.

Try heading to the back of Geunjeongjeon Hall for a quiet photo spot.

I’M ON A BOAT!  |  Watch the sunset and see a sparkling night view of Seoul, on a luxurious yacht cruise atop the Han River. Check info here.

Pillars around Gyeongbokgung Palace

I didn’t get a shot between the many pillars around Gyeongbokgung Palace at night, but these are a worthy spot. You’ll find these all over the palace complex, but head to the right of Geunjeongjeon Hall for a well-lit and beautiful place to pose.

Gyeonghoeru Pavilion | 경회루

Gyeonghoeru Pavilion is one of the few structures at Gyeongbokgung Palace that survived the Japanese occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945, relatively intact. It’s the biggest pavilion in Korea, and sits on a peaceful pond, with views of Mount Ingwangsan and the surrounding temple complex.

gyeongbokgung at night | Gyeonghoeru Pavilion

Gyeonghoeru Pavilion’s reflection glimmering off the pond is gorgeous.

Lights glow on the pond’s surface during the Gyeongbokgung Palace at night event, creating a wonderful atmosphere. For an extra special experience, go when the moon is full and admire Gyeonghoeru Pavilion’s reflection glinting off the surface of the water.

There are free 40 minute tours of Gyeonghoeru from April 1st to October 31st. Advance registration on the official palace website is required for this (only in Korean).

How to go to Gyeongbokgung Palace

The simplest way to get to Gyeongbokgung Palace is to get on Seoul Subway Line 3 to Gyeongbokgung Station. Take Exit 4 and walk about 250 metres until the reach the palace grounds.

  • Tipping is not part of Korean culture, though some bars may have tip jars.  Feel free to leave some change in a tip jar but don’t take extra cash out of your wallet unless somebody stated that it is fine to do so as in all other cases it can be seen as rude.
  • Since foreign credit and debit cards don’t always work, we advise you to always carry some spare cash.

With all of Seoul’s modern and material hustle and bustle, one may be surprised to learn of the many historic and wondrous Buddhist temples Seoul has.

For those seeking a sunset that is a one-of-a-kind experience, check out the Bongeunsa Temple , known for its famous statue of the Maitreya Buddha, the Buddha of the future who is yet to arrive. It is one of the things Seoul is famous for.

At night, as the sun drops, the temple’s many lanterns come alight.

During Buddha’s Birthday , the lanterns and lights are even more impressive, featuring characters and images from Korean and Buddhist myths and lore.

The green surroundings of the temple are in sharp contrast with the modern urban high rises of the capital.

From atop North Seoul Tower and Seoul Sky Observatory, you can take in the city and see for yourself, the beauty of this vast city.

N Seoul Tower is located on Namsan mountain.  You can either hike to the top of the mountain or take the cable car.  Once there you can ride an elevator to the observation deck at the top of the tower .

The views from the mountaintop are really good but from the viewing platform of the N Seoul Tower, they’re truly breathtaking.

The observatory is free for those who have advanced restaurant reservations at the N Grill.

To make the most of your visit to the observation platform pick a day with clear skies.  On foggy days the views from the tower are limited.

Keep in mind that a lot of people come here to watch the sunset, so it can be busy around this time.

Address: 105 Namsangongwon-gil, Yongsan 2(i)ga-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul.

Car traffic has been restricted to the summit. You can hike, take a shuttle bus or, as we did, take the subway and the cable car to get to the tower.

One can grab the Namsan Sunhwan shuttle bus numbers 02, 03, and 05 from a few different locations depending on where you are. Shuttle bus No. 02 stops at Chungmuro station exit 2 and Dongguk University station exit 6. Bus 03 can be found at Seoul Sation exit 9, Itaewon Station exit 4, and Hangangjin Station exit 2. Finally, bus 05 can be caught at Myeongdong Station exit 3 and Chungmuro Station exit 2 in front of Daehan Cinema.

The price to ride is 1,200 won in cash or 1,100 won for those with a transportation card (which you can grab at convenience stores and charge with cash there too!).

Seoul Cheonggycheon river walk, South Korea

Walk Along The Cheonggyecheon Stream

Beautiful day or night, but with a special mystique at night when the lights of the surrounding skyline reflect off the meandering waters, the Cheonggyecheon stream is a romantic and serene place to take a stroll.

Visit the Cheonggyecheeon Museum to learn about the painful and tumultuous history that Cheonggyecheon bared witness to, from the Korean War to the struggle to rebuild post-war Korea.

This is a sight not to miss and an experience you can share with many other young Korean couples that come to celebrate their love at the boardwalk.

Address: 03187, 37 Mugyo-ro, Jongno-gu.

You can also go to Euljiro Station on subway line 2 and take exits 2 or 3, as well as to Dongdaemun Station on subway Line 4 where you would take exits 5, 6, or 8.

Visit A Noraebang Or PCbang

No trip to Korea is complete until one has visited a noraebang, also sometimes called a Karaoke Box, or PCbang.

“Bang” in Korean means “room” and “norae” is song while PC just refers to computers!

Both establishments are found quite numerous but two big ones to keep an eye on in Seoul are the Luxury Su Noraebang located at 367-4 Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu in Hongdae, and the Peak PC located at Nunhyeon-dong, 86-4 1F in Gangnam.

Both these areas are vibrant places to check out the nightlife and finish the night singing songs in a room awash with retro-decor while your friends back you up on tambourine or with a massive state of the art headset.

Oh! And the food to enjoy?

At a Noraebang the singing is usually accompanied by fruit platters, beer, and soju ( a sort of Korean liquor).

At PCrooms the bars are usually filled to the brim with energy drinks like Hotsix and cup ramen are the culinary treats of choice.

Enjoy Seoul’s nightlife

Koreans work hard and they play just as hard, too.

There is no limit to the clubs, bars, pubs, and hot spots you can visit while you are in this futuristic city.

Hongdae is the place to go for underground and indie music and performances. Located at a crossroads of universities this is the place where many students gather to drink and congregate.

Itaewon is the place where you can mingle with foreign ex-pats and the American military (it is right by a big American army base).

Recently Itaewon has been demonstrating a culinary renaissance with the arrival of many foreign bars, grills, and restaurants.  This is the place to go for those already missing food from back home or those who want to party with other English-speaking people.

Now as for Gangnam, this is the place to go for those who have a hefty amount of cash to throw around.

That doesn’t mean you can’t party or drink on a budget, but in Gangnam or Apgujeong, the glitz and glamour are cranked up to 11, so keep an eye on your bank balance when you hit the trendy bars!

Watch A Sports Match In A Sports Bar

Sports fans shouldn’t worry about missing their next favorite game.

Seoul is full of sports bars.

Whether you are a baseball, rugby, basketball, football or hockey fan you’re sure to find a bar that’s right for you.

If you are looking for recommendations, check out Sam Ryan’s bar in Itaewon or The Workshop.

Seoul NIghtlife South Korea

Go Dancing At Club Ocatagon

Koreans know how to throw a party.  Seoul has an electrifying nightlife and counts many famous clubs. Club Octagon is one, in particular, to aim to get into.

Located in Gangnam and often times boasted as “the best club in Seoul” Octagon charges an entrance fee of w30,000 which includes a drink.

The musical choices range from techno to hip-hop, depending on whether you are on the first or second floor of the club.

There are VIP tables and seating that will set you back at least w500,000 (+/- 428 USD) so check your bank account before rolling high at this club!

Address: 645, Nonhyeon-ro, Gangnam-gu, Club Octagon

Ride the Line 7 subway to Hakdong Station and use Exit 4.  Continue by walking straight until you reach the New Hilltop Hotel. Club Octagon can be found at the basement level.

Seoul's great palace is opening to night tourists for first time since Covid-19 pandemic

Moonlight foreign language tours at changdeokgung, one of the south korean capital's most-visited landmarks, are back.

One of Seoul's most-visited landmarks is reopening for night visits for the first time since the global pandemic.

Tourists will soon have a rare chance to explore Seoul’s magnificent Changdeokgung Palace beneath the stars during night-time guided tours featuring traditional Korean performances.

On Sunday and June 4, the 58-hectare Royal complex in the South Korean capital will host the first English-language moonlight tours of the landmark since before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Typically, the Unesco World Cultural Heritage site is only open to visitors during the day.

During these visits, Changdeokgung will be illuminated by both artificial light and the warm glow of traditional Korean lanterns. Tour participants will learn the history of the structure, which dates to the 1400s.

The 100-minute night tours cost Dh83 per person, and runs at staggered intervals from 7.20pm on both dates. Each session admits up to 75 travellers.

Korean capital's after-dark delight

Moonlight Tours at Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul are back on the agenda for foreign tourists. Photo: Visit Korea

In the daylight, the palace is wonderfully photogenic, thanks to the dazzlingly-bright colours of Dancheong. This is the name of a Korean design system which, for about 2,000 years, has been used to embellish the country’s most important structures.

Dancheong decorates the palace in a dense array of floral and geometric patterns, all painted in a specific palette of red, green, blue, yellow, black and white. As a result, Changdeokgung’s buildings look commanding and regal at a distance, and mesmerising up close. And they will be even more striking in the moonlight.

Organised by the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation, tours begin at the palace’s chief entrance, the hulking Donwhamun Gate and go through the complex to the lush grove that is the Secret Garden Forest Trail.

Guides leading the tours will explain how Changdeokgung was razed during the Japanese invasions of the late 1500s. Its dozens of halls, offices, pavilions and bridges were later carefully reconstructed.

Along the way, tourists will meet staff dressed as the King and Queen of the Joseon Dynasty. They’ll also stop three times to watch brief performances of the Daegeum bamboo flute, Ajaeng string instrument, traditional Korean Court dances, and Gagok singing.

Seoul's must-visit ancient palaces

Seoul attracts many tourists with its futuristic appeal, as an enormous city spiked by high rises, modern museums , towering five-star hotels, and massive shopping centres. But embedded within this cutting-edge cityscape is a wealth of historic sites, including five Imperial palaces, all in the downtown area.

They are Changdeokgung, Gyeonghuigung , Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung, and Gyeongbokgung. The latter is the largest, and also Seoul’s top tourist attraction, a 14th-century wonder long home to the kings of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty. But Changdeokgung is the most majestic.

It owns a picturesque location at the foot of Bukhansan, a forest-clad, 830m-tall mountain and national park that looms over the Seoul CBD. Directly to the palace’s south is Seoul’s most famous religious site, Jongmyo Shrine, a colourful, 16th century Confucian complex which protects the spirit tablets of Joseon kings and queens.

And the moon's gleaming presence will render a visit to this historic landmark all the more memorable.

Gyeongbokgung Moonlight Night Tour (Updated May 2024)

a wide shot of the main throne room at gyeongbokgung at night

This post was originally published in May 2023 but has been updated for May 2024.

Korea is full of beautiful and historical landmarks, but 경복궁 (Gyeongbokgung) will always be our favorite. We visit the palace at least once every season, in every kind of weather, any chance we get. We love the history, unique architecture and vibrant colors. In fact, it’s even the place my husband proposed .

For more information on Gyeongbokgung Palace (how to get there, what to see, how much it costs), check out our comprehensive guide .

seoul palace night tour 2023

Needless to say we never tire of roaming the palace grounds, but one of our favorite times to visit would have to be when it opens at night. As the sun sets and sky darkens, the dim yellow glow of lights and lanterns start to highlight the intricate wooden frames of each building. It is a hauntingly beautiful sight that only gets better as guests begin to funnel in dressed in colorful hanbok . It really brings the palace to life!

Right now the Gyeongbokgung Night Tour will be taking place from May 8 to June 2. Tickets go on sale at the palace ticket booth at 6:30pm, with tickets set aside every night specifically for foreigners. Entrance to the palace is only 3,000 KRW (~USD 3), but completely free if you dress in hanbok.

The Gyeongbokgung Night Tour only occurs twice a year, so make the most of your visit with our tips . It truly is a one of a kind experience and if you happen to be in Seoul definitely check it out. You won’t be disappointed!

The Soul of Seoul

Gyeongbokgung Palace: How To Get Tickets To See It At Night

People young and old, families and couples meandered at their leisure along the cobbled pathways that make up the Gyeongbokgung Palace (경복궁) complex in Seoul, Korea late into the night this past week. What started as a weeklong event many years ago, has now been expanded weeks long spring and autumn events to the enjoyment for tourists and locals coming to Korea.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is now open late into the night from April through May and then again from September through October. The evening experience sees more than 100,000 visitors. Gyeongbokgung Palace at night is just spectacular and is a truly special way to experience the main palace of the capital of Korea. It’s also a perfect thing to do at night in Seoul .

Get ready to visit Gyeongbokgung Palace at night:

How To Get There

Address: 1-1 Saejong-ro Jongno-gu, Seoul (종로구 세종로 1-1)

Directions: Head to Gyeongbukgung Station, exit 5 which exits directly into the palace complex. For the main gate view before you enter the palace, take Gyeongbukgung Station, exit 6. Make a u-turn and you’ll see the palace main gate across the street.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

Opening dates for spring: April ~ May

Opening dates for autumn: September ~ October

Entrance time: 7:00pm ~ 9:30pm (last entrance is permitted at 8:30pm.)

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

Admission: W3,000*

  • *Children under 6 are FREE.

There is a limited number of tickets available and they can only be purchased on-site. There are 500 tickets available for foreigners and one person can only purchase up to 4.

Everyone can get in FREE if you’re wearing Hanboks. If you don’t have one, rent one. Walking through a traditional Korean palace in traditional Korean clothing is pretty much the best way to get cultural and traditional in the city.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

The hours are extended until 10PM (last admission was at 9PM) and some of the main buildings are lit to the delight of many. One of the most beautiful and serene places in Seoul lit up in the night coupled with cultural performances at 5PM and 8PM in front of Sujeongjeon Hall meant people from all around would be headed to the same place. The palace is beautiful during the day, but is just a bit more magical when it’s lit up at night.

The areas lit for viewing pleasure included Gwanghwamun Gate, Heungnyemun Gate, Geunjeonghmun Gate, Geunjeongjeon Hall, Sujeongjeon Hall and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

Gwanghwamun Gate is the main entrance into the palace complex. The central arch was the entrance for the king while the arches on either side were for the crown princes or other officials entering the complex. The original gate had been moved to just north of the east gate of the palace when the Japanese government came in and took over in the 1920s. This gate was later bombed and destroyed during the Korean war. Rebuilt in 1968, it was most recently restored in 2010.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

After entering through Gwanghwamun Gate, the path leads to Heungnyemun Gate. In this area tickets can be purchased for the normal rate of W3,000. It being a Friday, the crowds were massive, yet navigable. Everyone moved with ease, in most cases, as we all had the same goal, enjoying the concert and taking pictures. Not only were the pictures of the beautiful architecture, but also of children playing in the lamp light and dancers in Hanbok on stage.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

Reaching the illustrious throne hall, or Geunjeongjeon Hall, was deemed a feat not worth fighting the crowds for this time. Standing back a bit though, the light mixed with all of the people strolling the grounds made the immensity of the building quite a sight. One could imagine how many people once filled this space when the king would receive foreign envoys and preside over official ceremonies here.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

The only entrance open from the main throne hall led to the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion. This seemed to be one of the biggest draws and for good reason. Situated in the middle of a pond, this pavilion is a true beauty seemingly floating on water. The reflection of the building and the lights and the moon in the water made for a spectacular photo opportunity certainly not missed by anyone in attendance.

This building was built for feasts and joyous affairs. The name means that the king is capable of handling national affairs only when he has the right people around him and in a setting like this the right people would definitely be the cherry on the ice cream. This building has remained intact on the grounds since being rebuilt in 1867 and is a must see for any visitor night or day.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

Sujeongjeon Hall was the final area lit up to showcase not only the building but those playing music and dancing to the audience’s delight. The chairs provided were filled to capacity and those still hoping to watch took their seats on the nearby lawn, any ledge space found, or a simple piece of newspaper on the dusty ground.

The show started off with a rendition of Arirang followed by some traditional and not so traditional remakes. About half way through, dancers in hanboks took to the stage to give the music a visual partner.

Gyeongbokgung Palace Always a Draw

All in all, the night was a lit up success. Friday, Saturday or Sunday would probably not be the most recommended days to go, but this event is, nonetheless, recommended to anyone and everyone with time to spare.

Hi, Do you have the dates for august 2023? Planning to go there Thank you

Hallie Bradley

It will be open from September 1 until October 29 in the evenings this year.

I’m visiting in April – are they going to have the palace open at night this year?

Thanks! Sarah

They should be. But I don’t think they’ve announced the dates just yet.

Maria Chavez

My sister, niece, and I are going to visit in October (6-30). My sister and I each bought your itineraries. Thank you for creating them! I haven’t studied them yet but she tells me there’s no mention of the night tours for the Gyeongbokgung Palace in them so I have some questions if you don’t mind.

I don’t see October dates yet. Have they announced the Autum schedule yet and are there some days during the week when it’s closed?

Also, is it best for us to secure tickets by just showing up at the gate on the night we’d like to visit? Finally, if we wear a hanbok, are we assured entrance even if they have exceeded their ticket numbers. I read elsewhere entrance was possible that way.

Thank you! Appreciate you!

Hi Maria, I hope you can use the itineraries well! You’re right the seasonal events aren’t mentioned in the itineraries which I hope to be a basis of info. My next goal it to make more monthly itineraries related to the seasonal fun and events. Goals though for now haha.

Generally, they keep quite a lot of walk up tickets available for foreigners just like you guys that can’t book in advance, so you should be fine. Just make sure to get there a bit before opening so that you can get them as there is a limited number. I’m not sure if they allow people to enter beyond the limit if they’re wearing Hanboks. The best thing to do is to get there on time for the opening. I haven’t seen the exact dates listed for the evening hours yet. The best thing to do is to visit the tourist booths when you arrive. There are booths in every touristy area and they have so much info and can provide a ton of help with exactly that kind of in the moment question. I hope you guys have a great time. October is a beautiful to visit!

Gyeongbokgung Palace is a destination that draws both foreign visitors and Koreans alike, donning the Hanbok, Korea’s traditional attire. • ATNZ 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Full on experience! We went on the tour to the DMZ, which included a stop at Gamaksan Suspension Bridge, Dora Observatory and the Third Tunnel of Aggression. Our guide's nickname was "Cool". He knew a lot about the area and was really passionate about the history of Korea. He was helpful too, taking photos for us and making sure everyone was okay throughout the day. The DMZ was an experience! The 3rd Tunnel was probably the deepest tunnel I've ever been in. Walking back uphill out of the tunnel seemed like good exercise. If you're not into a steep walk back up the hill, or don't feel safe in the tunnel, Cool stresses that you can wait outside. There are places you can wait outside with plenty of instagram type spots for photos. We couldn't take pictures inside the tunnel, but there were lockers to keep our things safe. The view from Dora Observatory was breathtaking! Cool helped us spot points of interest through the binoculars beforehand. Overall, the trip was decent and highly recommend, to anyone who wants to learn about the history of Korea and see some amazing views. Read more Written May 1, 2024
