Traditional Dress of Shimla

Shimla has to be one of the most beloved hill stations in north India. Located in the heart of Himachal Pradesh it is bound on all sides by rolling hills of green, underlined by the snowcapped peaks and enveloped in an air of deep spirituality and solitude at the same time. Ever since the British decided to make Shimla their summer capital, it also invited the native rulers who wanted to get away and have some respite against the hot and scorching summer season of the plains.

No matter how many rulers, empires or kings wanted to make Shimla their own; the people never forgot their roots, their age-old heritage, and culture. This can be seen not only through their fairs and festivals but also through their clothing. If you are observant enough you will even be able to recognize which community or tribe the locals of Shimla belong to. The traditional dress of Shimla for men and women is not only a way for them to dress up but it is their identity.

Here is everything you need to learn about the traditional dress of men and women in Shimla:

Traditional Dress of Men

Traditional Dress of Shimla for Men

Rajput Men – They wear tight Churidar, pajamas with long Kurta and a silk coat on top. Keeping in mind the weather conditions this coat is also made up of yak wool and leather which is entirely stitched using gold thread that ensures this clothing style is warm enough for them. The iconic headgear of a colored and starch stiffened turban. Men who wear Himachali Topi and fashion long moustaches are considered to be a sign of pride and honor, especially among Rajput men.

Brahmin Men – Since Brahmins are the most respected part of the society, Brahmin men are seen wearing Kurta and Payjama along with an overcoat or a waistcoat. To set themselves apart through their clothing Brahmin men also carry a soft white cloth on their shoulder with white being their dominant color of choice.

Traditional Dress of Women

Traditional Dress of Shimla for Women

Rajput Women – Himachali Rajput women wear a long colored and traditionally patterned Kurta that goes from neck to toe. This style of clothing especially became popular after the purdah or the veil system was introduced to these regions of Himachal. You will also see women wearing colorful layered long skirts, Ghagra with Cholis, and even Salwar Kameez. Ethnic bangles are an unmissable part of their entire traditional clothing ensemble.

Brahmin Women – Similar to Rajput women, Brahmin women also wear traditional similar clothing that consists of Salwar Kameez and Ghagra Choli. During special occasions like weddings, Himachali Brahmin women wear long pajamas and traditional Ghagra Choli woven at home using intricate designing patterns. The footwear is made out of either animal skin or grass which helps greatly in keeping the feet warm. They also sometimes hold the whole look using new bangles, earrings, and rings.

Traditional Jewellery and Ornaments

Tribal Himachali Dresses

Other than Shimla, which has clearly gotten a bit too commercialized, there are many tribes existing in the remote and deeper core regions of the state like in Kinnaur, Lahaul, Spiti, and even some places around Manali. Some famous traditional tribal pieces of clothing include Dohru, stall, and Bushehri Topi. By now you must know about the importance of wearing traditional Topis in Himachali communities. Tribal women who can be seen working in farms or just commuting love wearing bulky silk ornaments made out of silver or other materials. They especially love dressing up for functions or wedding events. The Tribals from Lahaul and Spiti also make sure to wear attractive and very colorfully eloquent pieces of clothing.

The traditional clothing style, pattern, design, and layering of the people in Shimla tells us a lot more about their life, community, and livelihood than anything else. One can decipher a lot about someone through the pieces of clothing they are wearing.

Or is it the strictly appreciative part of our mind that recognizes the beauty of mountains and the freshness only they can provide? Maybe. Wouldn’t that be why many people try to conquer the majestic mountains? More so are the people who try to build or at least vacay in hill stations.

Shimla Winter Packing List – Clothes and more

Now that you know about the place, the climate, and the activities, let’s come to the last section. Confused about what to wear in Shimla in Winter? Let us help you out.

Outerwear like puffer jackets and parkas

When planning your winter trip to Shimla, one of the most crucial clothing items you must pack is undoubtedly your jacket. In fact, it’s highly recommended to bring not just one, but two different types of jackets to ensure you’re prepared for various weather conditions and activities.

Quality Fleece-Lined Parka or Puffer Jacket: Your first jacket should be a high-quality fleece-lined parka or a well-insulated puffer jacket. This jacket is your go-to option when you’re braving the cold, snow, wind, and chill of Shimla’s winter weather. Look for one with excellent insulation and waterproofing to keep you warm and dry. It’s essential for staying comfortable while exploring the city, walking through snowy landscapes, or simply enjoying the picturesque views.

Lightweight Skiing Jacket: For those moments when your adventurous spirit beckons and you decide to hit the slopes for skiing or other winter sports, a lightweight skiing jacket is a must-have. These jackets are designed for maximum mobility and protection while engaging in active pursuits. Look for one that is breathable, waterproof, and has adequate insulation to keep you warm on the slopes. Layering up underneath this jacket with appropriate thermal wear will ensure you stay cozy and flexible during your skiing adventures.

Sweaters and Pullovers

Sweaters and pullovers can be of great help during the Shimla winter trip as it can get quite cold and you may not always want to layer up in a jacket but just something that you can remove easily and yet looks stylish.

A cardigan sweater would be a perfect companion to look classy yet warm and the pullover would be your best friend if you are planning on exploring the nooks and crannies of Shimla in the chilly December. Sweatshirts with hoodies can also be used to keep you warm in a cozy yet chic way.

Warm Pullovers

Doon Turquoise Supima Pullover

Baselayers

When all the layers try to keep you warm from the outside, the base layer takes a step back and keeps you dry by protecting your body from sweat. It might sound simple, but imagine those times when you were layered up in thick coats and you started sweating.

If you take out the layers, you will start getting cold and if not you will start hovering thanks to your wet T-shirt clinging to your body. This is where the thermal comes in handy. It will be anti-odor, quick moisture-wicking, and temperature regulating.

And thermals like that of Kosha are also lightweight so that it does not restrict you.

Woolen bottoms – Snow Pants

Just like how you use a thermal top, it is also important to use a thermal bottom to protect the lower half of the body from the cold.

Another important layering product that you need to carry is your snow pants. Shimla in winter is a snow wonderland. You would not want your wet pants stuck to your body throughout the trip.

Warm accessories

The easiest way to change the look and feel of your outfit is to splash some colors with your cool accessories. Be it your woolen scarf, trendy beanie, or touchscreen gloves.

Accessories also protect your extremities and keep you warm. Since Shimla experiences a lot of snowfall, it is always advised to invest in waterproof accessories, especially gloves .

Warm shoes or snow boots

You require special boots or shoes for a winter journey. When thinking of what to wear in Shimla in winter, one should pay special attention to warm and waterproof shoes that not just keeps you dry but also has a good grip. You do not want to slip and fall in a snow-covered landscape.

Warm socks

Socks are an integral part of your packing list when it comes to packing for your Shimla winter travel. More than half of Shimla tourist destinations are best explored via foot or cycling.

Camping and trekking play a major role in Shimla tourism. It is also one of the best ways to get to know the place better. While engaging in such outdoor activities it is important to warm socks that are not just warm but also have a good cushioning for your feet.

Importance of layering in Shimla in winter

One thing you should always keep in mind while packing your bag for Shimla is that Shimla is a winter destination and you would need layers. But having said that it is not mandatory for someone to pack heavy and have an uncomfortable travel expense even if it is to a sub-zero temperature area. What you need to pay attention to is to layer properly with the correct garments and you can be warm and comfortable.

The first layer would be the thermal or base layer. It is worn over your undergarments and is closest to your body. These garments are usually made of cotton, wool blend, or pure wool. As the quality of wool increases, the warmth it provides increases. Merino wool is the best fabric for thermals.

The next layer would be the mid-layer. All the hoodies, pullovers, sweaters, and sweatshirts fall under this category. They can be worn over your base layer depending on the temperature.

After mid-layer comes to the shell layer. Where the temperature is below 5-degree Celsius or where there are external factors like wind, snow, or rain, it is important to wear your jackets or coats.

The final part of the layering system is accessories. Everything that is used to protect your extremities falls under accessories. Socks, gloves, beanies, mufflers, or caps are all accessories. Depending on the temperature and your needs, you can choose these items.

Shimla – A Complete Travel Guide & Itinerary

shimla

If one was to prepare a list of the favorite and most visited tourist destinations of our country, Shimla will definitely be at the top of that list. This small hill town has enjoyed the status of being the favored one for almost 2 centuries now. British arrived here in the early 1800s and liked the place so much that they declared it as their summer capital in 1864. They even took all the hassle of building a railroad to Shimla.

The British left a long time ago but Shimla still continues to enjoy the same status. The beauty of this place is no less than it was a century ago, and still attracts thousands of tourists each year from all parts of the country.

If you too were thinking of visiting Shimla in the near future, then in this article I will provide some quick tips on how to plan a trip to Shimla. Your final travel plan will of course depend on several factors like how you are traveling; how many days you have in hand; the time of your trip but I will add a few things in this article which will remain the same irrespective of all these.

Quick Navigation

About Shimla

Shimla, also known as Simla, is the capital and the largest city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It gets its name from Shyamala Mata, an incarnation of the goddess Kali. A temple, dedicated to the goddess and named Kali Bari temple, is situated near the Ridge.

The town is located at 2,276 meters (7,467 ft) and is fondly called the ‘queen of the hills’. Before independence, it served as the summer capital of British India. After independence, it became the capital of Punjab and then finally the capital of Himachal Pradesh after the state came into existence.

Reasons to visit Shimla

What makes Shimla a desired destination for thousands of people however is because it is perfect for all kinds of vacations. From honeymooners to adventure seekers to families, the city serves as a charming retreat to a large number of people. The enchanting beauty of this hill station has attracted countless filmmakers and cinematographers. This erstwhile summer capital of the British, still retains its colonial-era charm through its spectacular historical churches and institutes, like Christ Church, Indian Institute of Advanced Study, and many more.

It is very well connected by road so getting here is not a problem. You never really go too remote and the famous market of Shimla is perfect for an evening of shopping around. Every modern-day facility is available here including good hospitals in case a medical emergency came up. All cell phone networks work in Shimla so you remain connected with your family and friends all the time.

Another great reason is the vast choice of accommodation choices available. No matter what your budget is, you will easily find a place to stay in Shimla. While the overall altitude of the city is enough to make it snow here, you never really climb up to a level where it becomes uncomfortable; or where you run a risk of suffering from acute mountain sickness. In short, it is a perfect destination to go to with family and also for a quick weekend getaway with friends.

how to reach shimla

How to Reach Shimla

Reaching Shimla will really be the easiest part of your vacation here. The city is very well connected and you can reach either by road, air or train, depending on your own preference.

How to reach Shimla by Road

Let us first take a look at how you can reach Shimla if you were traveling by your own car or motorcycle. For the sake of explaining the route, I will assume that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, only the journey till Chandigarh may change. The rest of the details will still apply.

Starting from Delhi, the route of the journey will be as mentioned below.

Delhi  – Panipat – Karnal – Ambala – Zirakpur – Panchkula – Kalka – Kandaghat – Shoghi – Shimla

The total travel time will be about 7-8 hours, depending on your speed and breaks. From Delhi, you will follow NH1 until Chandigarh. Do not enter the city though. Just before Chandigarh, turn right towards Kalka on Himalayan Expressway and follow the uphill road to Shimla.

This entire road remains in good condition all year. There is some road widening work happening between Kalka and Shimla due to which you may encounter some slow traffic. Once this work is completed, the entire road to Shimla will be a 4 lane highway, can you believe it?

How to reach Shimla by Bus

Shimla is very well connected by a regular bus service. There are daily buses available from almost all major cities in North India and finding one will be really easy. HRTC and HPTDC operate daily buses from Shimla to places like Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, etc, and vice versa. Other state transport agencies as well as private travel companies also provide regular buses. Just do a Google search and you will get plenty of options.

If you were coming from Delhi, you can board an overnight air-conditioned luxury bus from ISBT Kashmiri Gate, or may even catch a daytime bus.

How to reach Shimla by Train

An even fun and better way however will be to get here by Train. Yes, I am referring to the famous toy. You can reach Kalka by either a train from Delhi or Chandigarh and then board the Toy Train. The entire journey is on a narrow-gauge rail track, covering a distance of 96 kilometers in about 7 hours. For more details, please take a look at How to Plan a trip by Shimla Kalka Train .

If you do not want to travel by this train, you can reach Chandigarh instead. From there, either board a Bus or hire a private taxi.

how to reach shimla

How to reach Shimla by Flight

Jubarhati, which is about 23 kilometers from the town, is the nearest airport to Shimla. There are regular flights going from Jubarhatti to Chandigarh and Delhi.

Other than Jubarhatti, Chandigarh is the next nearest airport.

Best way to reach Shimla

The best way to reach Shimla would be to travel by your own vehicle; either by a motorcycle or Car. The condition of the road, as I mentioned, is very good and it takes you through some really stunning landscape. You can take as many breaks as you want, travel at your own pace and enjoy the scenery.

What to See in Shimla

Shimla has a long list of tourist attractions. You can spend days here and still not be done with it all. Some places are right in the town whereas some others are at a little distance, like Kufri. If you drove a little further, you can even visit places like Narkanda and Thanedar , that are equally beautiful and even quieter than the main town.

I have covered the topic of sightseeing in a different article, Complete List of Tourist Attractions in Shimla and its Vicinity , that I will urge you to read. Adding all of these details here on this one page would have just rendered this article endless.

Other than visiting all of the places mentioned above, here is a list of some other activities that you may indulge yourself in while visiting Shimla. I am not including things like hiring a cab and drive an hour to visit a nearby place, but things that you can do while staying in the town itself.

Take a Walk on The Ridge:  The ridge is an area near Jhaku Hill and the Observatory. This is the place where Shimla’s fairs, festivals, and functions are held. Tourists come here to see several colonial-style buildings, a church, a library, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Trek to Jhaku Hill:  At a height of 2,455 meters, the top of Jhaku hill offers a mesmerizing view of Shimla and the entire Shivalik range around. It is a fun trek of about 30 minutes to the top through lush forest terrain.

Shop at Mall Road:  While you are in Shimla, do not forget to do some shopping at the famous Mall road and buy yourself some souvenirs.

Ride the Toy Train: Take a ride in the famous Toy train of Shimla. It is a journey of 96 kilometers that will take you over 864 bridges and 102 tunnels, including the longest one at Barog. Scenic vistas will accompany you throughout the journey and you will have a hard time to stop clicking your camera.

Weather of Shimla

The weather in Shimla is mostly cool throughout the year. The summers can be moderately warm but winters will be extremely cold. During the summer, the temperature will fluctuate between 10°C to 28°C. The average temperature during winter is 10°C to 0°C, but the record low temperature is −12°C.

Between late December to early February, Shimla receives plenty of snow each year and turns into a winter wonderland. Sometimes even the roads from Shimla to Mashobra or Narkanda can get blocked due to all the snow on the road. The night temperature in these months will drop close to 0°C.

The snow is mostly all gone by March, except for at the top of the distant peaks. April marks the beginning of the spring season and until the end of summer in June, Shimla receives the majority of tourists each year. People reach here to escape the scorching heat of the plains. But at this time, even Shimla can feel pretty hot and you may need to switch on the AC in your hotel room. The day temperature can go even beyond 30°C.

The months of July and August are of monsoon. Even though the scenic beauty at this time is at its best, it is not a safe time to visit anywhere in the hills. Shimla receives a lot of rain each year. Sometimes it can rain non-stop for days, causing landslides and making a trip very risky.

Monsoon departs in the month of September but leaves behind plenty of greenery. Autumn arrives in October and all that was green in September now turns Orange. November is mostly a dry month when the winter settles in once again and the average temperature drops close to 10°C.

Best time to Visit Shimla

Answer to this question will depend on whether you are planning a winter trip or in the months of summer; and what exactly do you seek. On an overall basis, the months from March to June are considered the best time to visit Shimla. This is the time when the weather is neither too cold nor hot. The temperature will range between 10°C to 28°C and both days and nights will be pleasant.

If you were however planning a winter trip and wanted to see plenty of snow, then the months of January and February will be the best time to visit here. The temperature however at this time can dip as low as −4 °C. So you must carry plenty of woolens, jackets and warm clothes. Chances of snowfall are more in January than February.

If you, however, would like to witness the lush green valleys, the months of July, August and September would be the best time. This is the time when the monsoon is either in the valley or has just passed and breathes in life to the fauna and flora of the region.

Please be advised that the rainy season also brings in the risk of incessant rains and landslides as a result. You may even get restricted to your hotel room completely if it rained non-stop.

When to go to Shimla

Below is a breakdown of the best time to go to Shimla for different kinds of trips.

  • Best time to visit Shimla for Apples: The apple harvesting season begins in mid-July and ends in August.
  • Best time to visit Shimla by Toy Train: The toy train remains functional for all 12 months so it is only a question of when is it convenient for you. Please take a look at How to Plan a Trip in Shimla Kalka Toy train for more details.

  • Best time to visit Shimla for Honeymoon: If you were planning your honeymoon, January to March will be the best time. September and October will be the next best months.
  • Best time to visit Shimla for Snowfall: Your chances of catching a snowfall are best between late December to early February. It can snow in late February or early  March as well but chances are less.

Itinerary for Shimla

How your trip finally plans out will completely depend on how you were traveling and the number of days in hand. But I will suggest a few different plans that you can follow, covering Shimla and its nearby areas.

I will suggest the itinerary assuming that you were starting from Delhi. Even if you were coming from a different city though, only the part about traveling to and from Delhi will change. The rest of the details will still apply.

3 Days Itinerary Shimla Trip Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Delhi to Shimla
  • Day 2 – Spend the day sightseeing in Shimla. Visit Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, The Ridge, and Mall Road. Take a drive towards Kufri
  • Day 3 – Return to Delhi

4 Days Itinerary

  • Day 2 – Spend the day sightseeing in Shimla. Visit Jakhu Temple, Christ Church, The Ridge, and Mall Road.
  • Day 3 – Take a drive towards Narkanda. On the way, visit places like Mashobra and Kufri. See Hatu Temple in Narkanda.
  • Day 4 – Return to Delhi

5 Days Plan

  • Day 2 – Take a walk on the Ride road. Later, visit Jakhu Temple and Christ Church. Spend the evening at Mall Road.
  • Day 4 – This day can be planned in 3 ways. Either you can spend it in Shimla just relaxing and enjoying the views. Or you can take a drive to the nearby Chail which is another great tourist attraction. The third way is to enjoy a ride in the Toy Train.
  • Day 5 – Return to Delhi

By Public Transport

The above plans were for someone traveling by their own vehicle. If you were coming by a Bus, below is how you can plan your journey.

  • Day 0 – Board an overnight bus for Shimla. In Delhi, you can get it from ISBT Kashmere Gate.
  • Day 2 & 3 – Spend the next 2 days in the town itself. Visit all of the local attractions in Shimla, eat out, and do some shopping.
  • Day 4 – Board the toy train and reach Kalka. From Kalka, reach Chandigarh Bus stand and find a Bus for your hometown. If you have no interest in the toy train, then find a Bus for back to your hometown from Shimla itself.

Another way you can plan this journey is by doing it the other way around.

  • Day 0 – Board a Bus late in the evening that can drop you at either Shimla or Kalka by the morning the next day.
  • Day 1 – Board the morning toy train for Shimla from Kalka. Reach Shimla and check into a hotel.
  • Day 2 & 3 – Spend the next 2 days sightseeing in Shimla.
  • Day 4 – Return to Delhi by Bus.

Mobile Network in Shimla and Data Connectivity

BSNL has the widest network coverage in Himachal but in Shimla, every cellphone will work fine. Irrespective of which network you were on, you will get reception and 4G data.

If I was to name one, I will say that Airtel and Jio are best mobile network in Shimla on an overall basis.  BSNL has a good network everywhere but data connectivity can be a little poor at times.

Hospital / Medical Assistance

Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and as such, it has good and large hospitals, capable of handling all kinds of medical emergencies. If you need medical assistance, finding it in Shimla will not be difficult at all.

But with that being said, I will strongly recommend carrying a few basic medicines like for flu, upset stomach, fever, body ache, and pain relief spray.

Petrol Pump / Mechanics

There are petrol pumps and mechanics available in Shimla. In fact, car and motorcycle companies have authorized service stations here so it will not be a problem at all.

Banks / ATMs

All major banks have their branches and ATMs in Shimla. I have been in Shimla on numerous occasions and have never had any trouble getting cash at any of the ATMs.

What & Where to Eat

Being a popular tourist destination, Shimla has an endless list of restaurants serving all kinds of dishes. Out here, you can try local Himachali food, North & South Indian, Chinese, Italian, and pretty much everything.

Where you eat will surely depend on where you were. Your breakfast will be at your hotel and lunch at a restaurant depending on your sightseeing plan. But for dinner, I will suggest that you go to Mall Road and try any of the restaurants there per your liking.

Shopping in Shimla

There are four places where you can try shopping. The first one is the Mall road, the heart of all the action and activity. The second and cheaper option is the Tibetan Market where you can negotiate for good deals on clothes.

An even cheaper place is the Lower Bazaar but is more for buying day to day commodities rather than shopping.

If you want to buy some decorative items, you should try Lakkar Bazaar.

Other than these 4 places, the Himachal Emporium is also a good place to buy some local handicraft items.

My favorite of all these is the Lakkar Bazaar. It is a great place to pick up some souvenirs for the trip. You can try Mall road as well but I found it better for eating than shopping.

lakkar bazaar

Shimla Road Condition

The entire stretch between Delhi to Shimla is a smooth run. Both NH1 between Delhi and Chandigarh and then NH22 between Chandigarh and Shimla remain in excellent condition throughout the year. The only problem on this stretch earlier was the narrow roads and traffic of Kala but with Himalayan Expressway being now operational, the complete journey has turned into bliss.

At the time of writing this article, there is road widening work ongoing between Kalka and Shimla so expect some slow traffic at places. But upon completing, this entire road will turn into a 4 lane highway.

The roads from Shimla to other places like Kufri, Fagu and Narkanda are also very smooth.

Best Vehicle

There is really no best vehicle as such. You will find the locals here driving around Maruti hatchbacks and even scooters. The only thing needed is that your vehicle is well maintained and capable of handling the ups and downs of the mountain roads. In fact, you will find most of the taxi drivers using a Maruti Alto for showing the tourists around.

Below are some most commonly asked questions about Shimla.

When will Shimla Open?

Shimla remains open for tourism throughout the year and flaunts different colors in every season. While the months of June till September will present you with lush green and well-blossomed valleys; January and February will cover Shimla under a thick sheet of white.

Is Shimla Worth Visiting?

Yes, Shimla is definitely worth visiting and there is plenty to see here. It is not only nature lovers but also people with an interest in history and architecture that will be pleased after a trip to this historic hill town.

Traditional Dresses Of Himachal Pradesh

‘Himachal Pradesh’ was named by a great Sanskrit scholar Acharya Diwakar Datt Sharma. Himachal Pradesh is a beautiful state of India situated in the northern part of the Asian subcontinent. This amazing state consists of various communities, religions, and ethics. Everyone lives in peace and harmony enjoying diverse traditions and cultures throughout the region.

Apart from all the diversities in Himachal Pradesh, the Himachalis have specific attire that differentiates them from other communities. These communities include Rajputs, Hindu Brahmins, and some other tribes such as Gaddis, Kinnauris, Lahulis, Kullvi, spitians, The traditional dresses of Himachal Pradesh are full of vibrant colors and are mostly handwoven. The costumes and dressing styles of various regions represent their culture and traditional values. Also, the dresses are made according to the cold weather conditions of these regions to keep the people warm and safe. The costumes are beautiful and full of colors. Caps, shawls, woolen coats, waistcoats, stoles are most commonly used by the people of Himachal Pradesh.

Traditional Dresses of Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is one of the eminent states of India with miscellaneous and traditional dressing styles. The traditional dresses of Himachal Pradesh are different for different tribes and vary among both men and women as well. the dresses are made keeping in mind the harsh cold weather during winters that linger almost throughout the year. The women usually wear salwar kameez, Ghagras, and Lehenga Cholis. The costumes of women include colorful headscarves that are long enough and are knotted from the back.  Women also adorn themselves with lots of bangles, and different types of traditional ornaments.

Let’s go through the different types of Traditional Dresses in Himachal Pradesh

  • Kinnaur Dress
  • Shimla Dress
  • Chamba Dress
  • Sirmaur Dress

Kinnaur lies in the northeast part of Himachal Pradesh and is surrounded by Tibet to the east. Kinnaur is an extremely beautiful district with three high mountains ranges hence it has the beautiful valleys of the Himalayas. Some of the famous and delicious fruits like apples, Chilgozas, and various other dry fruits are grown in Kinnaur.

The climate here is mostly cold and snowy that is the reason the people in this district prefer and wear woolen dresses. The costumes of men and women are made as per the climatic conditions and are equally beautiful with vibrant colors.

Men usually wear warm woolen shirts that are locally called ‘chamn Kurti’. There is another type of dress that men wear called ‘Chhuba’ which is a long woolen coat. A sleeveless woolen jacket worn over the ‘chhuba’, a churidar pajama called ‘Suthan’, and a woolen cap ‘Kinnauri topi’ completes the costume of men.

Women cover themselves with beautiful and colorful woolen shawl locally termed as ‘Dohru’.  The ‘Dohru’ is a long shawl with embroidered borders throughout the length and flows up to the heels.

The first wrap is over the back and then on the shoulders. Beautiful cholis or blouses are worn with the shawl. Some of the young Kinnaurs prefer wearing cotton/synthetic salwar kameez as well nowadays.

The Kinnaurs used to wear traditional footwear made up of wool and goat hair however now they wear readymade shoes.

The women also adorn themselves with heavy jewelry which compliments the look and makes them look prettier.

Shimla is the largest city of the Indian states and is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. This amazingly beautiful city is the queen of hills in India and is located 7500ft above sea level. Enriched with mesmerizing scenic beauty, Shimla is one of the most beautiful holiday destinations in India.

Like other Himachali districts, Shimla has a unique culture and traditions of various aspects of life including the dressing style that makes them different from various other tribes.

The basic traditional dress of Shimla is usually woolen cloth due to the cold climatic conditions that include salwar kameez and kurta pajamas with a waistcoat in different patter from other tribes and with different names.

Men of Shimla usually wear warm knee-length kurta and pair it with pajama locally termed as ‘Suthan’. The woolen kurta is then layered with a jacket or waistcoat as a prevention from the cold weather. This waistcoat is locally called ‘Saluka’ or ‘Sadri. Just like other tribes of Himachal Pradesh, the men cover their heads with a round colorful woolen cap.

The women of Shimla wear a 5 set of costumes known as ‘Reshta’. This traditional outfit includes a high neck Kurti, a pajama, a skirt, a waistcoat, and a rectangular headscarf. The waistcoat is called a ‘saluka’. They cover their head with a square headscarf call ‘Dhatu’.  To make the outfit look more beautiful, the women wear heavy jhumkas.

Chamba Traditional Dress

Chamba is located in the northwestern district of Himachal Pradesh. This region has a vibrant culture that includes various traditions, beliefs, arts, and is rich in traditional costumes.

The Chamba district is usually known for its Gaddi tribe, which is an ancient cultural tribe of Himachal Pradesh. Earlier, men of the Chamba district used to wear woolen chaddars called ‘Pattu’ around their waist which is tied with using ‘patka’, and the women used to wear full-length woolen dresses. The Gaddi men, however, wore very loosely fir woolen dress locally called as ‘Chola’ that used to be white and they used girdle with a long black woolen rope locally termed as ‘Dora’.

With time, the people of Chamba have been evolved and their dressing changed a lot. Nowadays, the traditional costumes of men are the knee-length  ‘Chola’ that is a long woolen coat. It is then tied with a rope called ‘Dora’. the bottom outfit is a woolen pajama termed as ‘Suthan’. The men cover their heads wearing a unique traditional ‘topi’.

The costumes of women are beautiful vibrant frocks called Luanchari, which is made using around 20meters of fabric. The frocks are stitched beautifully and adorned with lots of frills and pippins in them. The costume also includes ‘Dora’ which is worn around the waist and used to tie the Lauanchari.

The ‘Dora’ is around 45 meters long black-colored woolen cord used by the women. They cover their head using beautifully decorated dupattas which adds to their beauty and gives the whole outfit a traditional look.

Women in Chamba carry various types of traditional ornaments that come with beautiful designs.

Some of the different types of jewelry worn by Chamba women are:

  • Chak:  This is specifically used by Gaddi women and it’s a symbol of married women. It is worn at the back of the head and is conical in shape. Different types of chak are chak-boron wala which includes lots of hanging beads at the edges with silver chains and chak-Meena with Meena work done beautifully.
  • Chiri Tikka : Chiri is a mang tikka worn by Chamba women over the forhead.

Sirmaur is the southernmost district of Himachal Pradesh and is situated in the outer Himalayas known as the Shivalik range. Apart from the famous landscapes and temples, the Sirmaur district is fascinatingly amazing with various religious and cultural traditions. The traditional dressing style of Sirmaur is quite simple minimal. Most of the population of Sirmaur lives in villages and they hold the deep routed traditional culture and beliefs.

Women of Sirmaur usually wear salwar kameez. During winters, they wear woolen sweaters or pullovers. They also carry woolen shawls. To protect themselves from the chilly winds during winters, they cover their head with a square piece of headscarf called ‘Dhatu’.

Men of this district wear ‘Lohiya’ a long woolen coat and pair it up with a pajama. they wear a round cap/ ‘topi’ similar to ‘Kinnauri topi’.

Lahauli and Siptian Traditional Dress

shimla tour dress

Two previously separated districts of Lahaul and Spiti make the Lahaul and Spiti district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Earlier, both the districts were merged.  The Lahaul and Spiti district is located at the very high altitudes of Himachal Pradesh due to which, the districts are the coldest region of the Himalayas and have snow-covered mountains for almost six months of the year. The districts are enriched with different traditions and cultures and have unique dressing styles as well. woolen clothes are preferred due to the cold weather.

Lahaul Traditional Dressings:  Men usually wear dark-colored woolen trousers with full- sleeves shirts known as ‘Kurti’. They also wear a very long and loosely fitted gown over the Kurti, locally termed as ‘Kattar’ which is mostly in the color black, white, or grey. A ‘Lahauli topi’ is worn to give the costume a complete look.

Women wear a long gown known as ‘Dugpo’ with fitted pajamas. The ‘Dugpo’ is tied at the waist using a sash.  The Lahauli women also wear a round cap like men which is a traditional ‘Lahauli topi’   and is usually in similar colors with not much design on it.

Siptians Traditional Dressings:   The costumes of Lahualis and Spitians are completely different from each other. The dresses of Spitians are made up of various materials and are named accordingly. The dresses of spitians are usually long loosely fit frocks or overcoats. If the frock is woolen it is locally named ‘Righoay’. If it is made up of goat or sheep fur it is named ‘Charlak’ and if made up of the skin of goat or sheep, it is named ‘Thakpa’. The frock/coat is paired up with tight warm pajama known as ‘Suthan’. To prevent form cold climate, the back and abdomen are tied with a ‘sash’ which is known as ‘Kira’. Sometimes, a silk or cotton frock is worn under the coat as well.

Women’s clothing has got similar names as men’s. The spitian women wear a ‘Tochay’ which is loose cotton made frock, and ‘Righoy’ a long woolen frock. The costume of spitians also includes a long full sleeves shirt with no collar and buttons called ‘Hoojuk’ and it is used to wear underneath the frock or coat.

The vibrant colored costumes of Spitians are paired with red or black pants and embroidered stoles locally named ‘Lingches’. Lingches are used to cover the back and neck and shoulders during winters. Finally, the layering is done by a ‘Lokpa’ which is a cape. A round cap with a green-colored band is used by both men and women. Dikra, Gau, Perak, Konta, Pichoon, and numerous other ornaments are worn by both men and women that make their attire unique and different from other regions.

Traditional Dresses of Various Other Districts of Himachal Pradesh

There are some other districts in the lower part of Himachal Pradesh that are equally famous for their culture and traditions. These districts are Hamirpur, Mandi, Solan, Kangra, Una, etc. the beautiful colorful dress of these districts is mostly very popular. The costume includes a long Kurta or shirt with a long ankle-length pleated skirt known as ‘Ghagri’. The Ghagri is usually red and the women wear this outfit during special occasions like weddings. A beautiful dupatta is carried over the head by women to complete the look.  The women also wear traditional jewelry like Maang Tika, a huge nose ring called ‘nath’ to beautify themselves.

The men usually wear pleated kurta which resembles a frock and pair it with ‘Suthan’ that is the pajama.

In regular practice nowadays, women chose to wear simple salwar kameez and use dupatta to cover their heads. And men usually wear kurta pajama and topi.

The districts of Himachal Pradesh are not yet influenced by the western culture completely as people truly follow their traditions and are deeply connected to the roots of Himachal Pradesh culture. However, some of the young generations have started following western dressing styles. Young men have started to wear shirts and jeans and young females go with skirts and tops. The traditional dresses are worn specifically during auspicious occasions and ceremonies. However, the true culture and creativity are found only in the traditional outfits of Himachal Pradesh.

We covered a lot of grounds in the 7-day tour with WTX. A big "Thank You" to Mr. Prakash on his quick action in solving our accommodation problem at Shimla. The drivers and guides were brilliant - couldn’t ask for more from them in terms of attention, knowledge and good humour. The hotel was very comfortable but cold and gloomy in the corridors. And the long awaited train ride was long and uncomfortable and slightly underwhelming tbh. Ask for an upgrade to First Class if possible. Enjoyed exploring Shimla and learned a lot, so bar a few caveats, would recommend this tour.

Mesmerizing Shimla, Manali & Chandigarh from Delhi - 07 Days

This was a truly enjoyable experience from start to finish. The company we travelled with was excellent, and the food and accommodation were of a very high standard. We saw and learned so much about this magical country, more than I could have ever expected. A special mention must go to our tour leader Kishore, who was always attentive and took as much pleasure in showing us around as we did in seeing everything. I would recommend this experience to anyone and everyone. Thank you all for making it so special.

Himalayas Tour By Train with Amritsar [Golden Temple] & Shimla Toy Train Tour [10 Days] Tour

Himalayas Tour By Train with Amritsar [Golden Temple] & Shimla Toy Train Tour [10 Days]

We enjoyed the places we visited on this tour as it covered all the places we were interested in, the only disappointment in the itinerary was the cancellation of the Toy train from Shimla, which we expected to be a highlight of this tour. We particularly liked Amritsar and the guide was very helpful in taking us into the kitchens at the Golden Temple which we may not have done on our own - he was very informative. The Partition Museum was interesting, although half an hour was not enough time and we had to leave half way through the visit. The experience of the flag Ceremony at the border with Pakistan was fun and enjoyable. Dharamshala was lovely but it felt like we were on a mystery tour as we couldn't communicate with the driver about the plan for the day due to him speaking and understanding very little English. As it happened, he took us to all the places we wanted to visit, but it was frustrating not knowing what was happening and timescales. We had the same problem in Shimla. Malkeet our driver was very helpful and reliable and we felt safe in the car with him, even though no seat belts in the back. The hotels were mixed - we liked the Clarks Inn Amritsar very much but the hotel in Dharamshala was totally inadequate. No one else staying there, no drinks available, not even bottled water and even though they provided us with a menu, they did not have most things and it seemed they were not cooking at the hotel but instead going out to get a take away! They did get us one beer for the evening, even though we would have liked more. The only breakfast option was omelette and toast (which was not prepared with food hygiene in mind). The general cleanliness of the hotel. such as bedding and table linen did not make our stay comfortable for the two nights. The room was dark and dingy and had seen better days. The location was isolated so there was no where else we could go to eat or drink in the evening. We would have have liked to been able to go out and choose somewhere to eat. The hotel in Shimla was okay but not a good location for us to have any independence on dining outside the hotel. Overall, apart for the Toy train, everything went to plan and there was someone to meet us at every new destination on the tour. We enjoyed the tour.

Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla (Toy Train Ride) Tour

Have to embark on the Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla, which included a toy train ride. This 6-day tour was an absolute delight and truly exceeded my expectations. Our journey began in Delhi, and we were greeted by our knowledgeable and friendly tour guide who provided us with a brief overview of the tour. We then proceeded to Agra, where we were mesmerized by the majestic Taj Mahal. The tour guide provided us with interesting historical facts and stories about this iconic monument, making the experience even more memorable. Next, we headed to Jaipur, also known as the Pink City. The city's vibrant colors, bustling bazaars, and breathtaking forts left us in awe. The tour guide made sure we experienced the best of Jaipur, from the Amber Fort to the City Palace. The local markets were also a highlight, and we indulged in some delicious traditional Rajasthani cuisine. After exploring the Golden Triangle, we headed to Shimla, where the real adventure began. The toy train ride was a unique experience, and we were able to witness the stunning landscapes of the Himalayas. The journey was filled with picturesque views of lush green valleys, snow-capped mountains, and charming villages. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Once we arrived in Shimla, we were greeted with a warm welcome by our hotel staff. The city's colonial charm and cool climate were a refreshing change from the bustling cities of Delhi and Jaipur. We explored the city's main attractions, such as the Mall Road, Christ Church, and the Viceregal Lodge. The tour guide also took us to the nearby town of Kufri, where we enjoyed horse riding and breathtaking views of the Himalayas. Overall, the Golden Triangle Tour with Shimla was an unforgettable experience. The tour was well-organized, and the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. The toy train ride was a highlight and added a unique touch to the tour. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the rich cultural heritage of India and witness the beauty of the Himalayas. It is a perfect blend of history, culture, and adventure.

Shimla Weather And Best Time To Visit Shimla

Shimla, the queen of all hill stations is rightly called so. The weather in Shimla is characterised by mild summers, freezing winters and a distinct monsoon. Despite monsoons being the off season for tourism here, due to the pleasant weather, tourists flock to Shimla all year round. Though, we must inform you, in case you wish to avoid jam packed tourist attractions and accommodation, plan a trip during the monsoons which is slightly less cramped.

Wondering when to pack your bags and what to put in it? Read on to find out the best time to visit Shimla.

Spring and Summer (March to June)

Spring and Summer (March to June): Shimla Weather And Best Time To Visit Shimla

Ideal weather conditions with very little humidity in the air makes this the perfect time to be in Shimla. The blooms of the spring give tourists a fragrant and colourful welcome to the Queen of the Hills. With pleasant days, this is the perfect season for outdoor activities. Most people prefer to visit Shimla during the summers to beat the city heat and enjoy the scenic views and cool winds the city has to offer. The temperatures range from 10-20 o  Celsius in the months of March and April and between 16-28 o Celsius in May and June. The Spring months might also see some thunder and showers.

Monsoon (July and September)

Monsoon (July and September): Shimla Weather And Best Time To Visit Shimla

Monsoon is off season. However, nature lovers might still plan trips during this time. Monsoons in Shimla are characterised by continuous rain. Due to this, the weather is cool and comfortable despite the high levels of humidity in the air. However, on the flip side, there might be landslides. Temperatures range between 13 to 20 o Celsius. If travelling on a tight budget, you could get great deals during this period; however, we suggest avoiding this season as it may hamper your experience of the Queen of the Hill Stations.

Autumn and Winter (October to February)

Autumn and Winter (October to February): Shimla Weather And Best Time To Visit Shimla

Evenings tend to get cooler as autumn approaches in the month of October. The skies are generally clear with temperatures falling down to 10-12 o  Celsius in the evenings. The highest temperature during autumn is close to 20 o  Celsius. Winters turn the city to a pristine white with frequent snowfalls. Winters are generally characterised by dull weather which is enlivened by the snow falls.  During winters the temperatures range between -7 to 10 o Celsius. Due to extreme cold, the number of tourists in winters decrease, though many still come to enjoy the snow.

Despite the popularity of Shimla as a hill station in India , the city has managed to retain its serenity and calm. While some like to soak the waters of nature in monsoons, others like the romance of the winters and yet others prefer the pleasant summers. In short, the best time to visit Shimla is anytime the heart so desires. Just pack your bags and head out.

History & Culture in Shimla

History of Shimla goes back to the period of Anglo-Gurkha war in the commencement of 19th century. In 1804 the Gurkhas , who had suffered a brutal conquer at the hands of the Sikhs at the battle of Kangra, a hill fortress about sixty miles from Shimla, where according to some accounts they lost thousands of men in the fight and many others from disease, commenced to devastate the states and hills bordering Shimla.

Shimla, India

Visit Shimla, India

  • Accommodation
  • Things to do

The 19th-century British colonial government couldn’t cope with the heat of the Indian summers and searched the foothills of the Himalaya for a cool retreat. Some 2,100 m (6,889 ft) above sea level, they found the ideal climate in the tiny hamlet of Shimla, which was conveniently surrounded by a pine forest for building materials. The village blossomed into a thriving British hill station, where croquet on the lawn, rounds of golf, and afternoon tea on the terrace whiled away the days.

Today, the government may be Indian, but the town still exudes a colonial charm. Local people are proud of Shimla’s faded grandeur, children run around in English-style school uniforms and judges leave the town hall in wigs and robes.

Traffic is restricted to the outskirts of Shimla, making it easy to explore on foot. I enjoy simply wandering through the streets, past the antiquated buildings and remnants of colonial times.

Things to see and do in Shimla

Arrive by toy train.

Toy Train Shimla

From Kalka, the train travels at a clunky 24 km (15 miles) an hour, through 103 tunnels and over 806 bridges. Ascending 2,169 m (7,116 ft) over five hours, it’s one of the steepest railway climbs in the world. These figures are impressive, but the views, right across the lower Himalaya, are the highlight of the journey. Stopping at 18 small stations along the route, you can catch sight of local life, such as the traders who dash to your window to offer you fresh chickpea dhal or a cup of chai.

Explore Shimla’s colonial streets

A constant stream of viceroys, soldiers, clerks and their families poured into 19th-century Shimla, creating a microcosm of British society. The comforts of a traditional British town were quickly built, including schools, churches, lodges and a post office. Most of the remaining buildings are now repurposed, but the mock-Tudor and baronial-style architecture has been affectionately preserved.

Starting at the buttermilk-yellow Christ Church overlooking the town, you can meander down the pedestrianised streets, which are trimmed with colonial frontages. The Gaiety Theatre, now an art gallery, once welcomed Rudyard Kipling and Lord Robert Baden-Powell to the stage. It’s difficult to miss the half-timbered town hall with its shingled eaves; it’s still the office of the Mayor of Shimla. The Viceregal Lodge, the summer residence of the Viceroy of India, is now an institute of advanced studies, but some rooms are open to the public.

Hike the foothills of the Himalaya

Many of Shimla’s hotel rooms boast views right across the foothills of the Himalaya, but to appreciate the scenery fully you need to explore on foot. A web of trails leads from the town, many well worn by farmers and traders before the British arrived. Shimla is surprisingly large, with new settlements mushrooming around the outskirts, so we recommend driving half an hour outside the town before beginning a guided walk.

One walk leads to the peak of Tara Devi Hill, and if you tackle it you’ll find at the top a 250-year-old temple dedicated to Tara Devi, the Hindu goddess of the stars. The 11 km (7 mile) walk follows switchback paths through thick pine forest, before clearing the tree line. From the peak you can see Shimla spread out below and the snow-covered higher Himalaya jutting out above.

Enjoy afternoon tea at Wildflower Hall

When Lord Kitchener, commander of the British Army, arrived in Shimla he noticed that many of his contemporaries had built elaborate summerhouses. Swiftly following suit, he commissioned Wildflower Hall, a 15-room mansion with an enviable position on a summit overlooking Shimla. The original mansion burnt down in 1915, but, ten years later, an even larger country house replaced it, which now runs as a luxury hotel.

Nodding to the days of Lord Kitchener, afternoon tea is taken on the outdoor terrace underneath fringed parasols. Tiny sandwiches and petit fours are served alongside local Himachali sidu (wheat-flour bread) and slices of akotri (gently spiced buckwheat cake). In the surrounding forest lies the hotel’s wild strawberry trail, a one-hour walk through cedar and pine trees where you might spot the iridescent monal pheasant, Shimla’s state bird.

Discover more of India’s foothills

Shimla is a gateway into the rest of the foothills region, with good — albeit windy — road connections. A day’s travel away, the foothills town of Dharamshala hosts the Tibetan government in exile. Here you can visit the Tsuglagkhang Complex, the official residence of the Dalai Lama and a refuge for sacred Buddhist texts. You’ll meet Tibetan refugees robed in traditional dress and be invited to try momos (steamed dumplings stuffed with vegetables).

From Dharamshala, a six-hour drive takes you to Amritsar and its lustrous Golden Temple. The holiest of Sikh shrines, the temple is surrounded by a marble water tank. Pilgrims travel from across the world to bathe in its sacred waters, said to have healing powers. The city is close to the border with Pakistan, where you can witness the daily border-closing ceremony, performed with military pomp and flamboyant marching.

Best time to visit Shimla

For crisp, clear skies and temperatures averaging a comfortable 15°C (59°F), October to November, then February to March are ideal times to visit. December and January can be quite cold and, with occasional snow flurries, are best avoided. April to June is the peak season for domestic visitors keen to escape the summer heat before the monsoon rains arrive in July.

Festivals, events and seasonal reasons to visit

  • In early October, the Hindu festival of Dussehra commemorates the goddess Durga’s victory over a demon. The festivities culminate in the lighting of bonfires to burn effigies, accompanied by music and feasting.
  • An integral part of Himalayan life, village fairs are used as a way to boost trade between townships. Shimla and its surrounding hamlets host a selection of seasonal fairs throughout the year, celebrating the first harvest, the end of the monsoon and the snow season.

Here’s how to enjoy the local foods of Shimla in the best way:

Try Street food: While Shimla has its share of restaurants serving local cuisine, some of the most authentic and flavorful dishes are found on the streets. Head to areas like Lakkar Bazaar or Lower Bazaar to explore the vibrant street food scene. Look for stalls with good hygiene practices and brisk business, as that’s a sign of fresh ingredients and popular taste.

Try seasonal food: Shimla’s weather changes throughout the year, and its cuisine reflects that. In summer, indulge in refreshing drinks like lassi and lemonade, and enjoy light meals like Siddu (steamed bun) with chutney. Winters call for heartier fare like Sidu with mutton curry or a steaming bowl of Thukpa (noodle soup).

Try Variety: Shimla offers a delightful mix of Himachali and Tibetan influences. Don’t limit yourself to just one type of dish. Try a bit of everything, from savory Babru (fried lentil fritters) and Chana Zor (tangy chickpea curry) to sweet treats like Kulfi (Indian ice cream) and Patrode (deep-fried, stuffed flatbread).

Ask the locals:   One of the best ways to discover hidden gems is to ask the locals for recommendations.  They’ll point you towards their favorite street food stalls or local restaurants serving authentic dishes.
