17 Things To Do on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas Cruise + 2020 Itinerary

Excited to go on your next cruise? You’re in luck! Read all about Quantum of the Seas cruise by Royal Caribbean, one of the World’s leading luxury cruise lines.

As you know, Royal Caribbean operates cruises all over the globe. In this guide, I’ll be sharing my cruise experience on Quantum of the Seas , which is currently sailing in East Asia and Southeast Asia.

I used to think of cruise ships as giant ferries decked with a pool area and cramped cabins. Now, my perception has been totally changed after going on my first Royal Caribbean cruise.

Quantum of the Seas is not your typical cruise ship, it’s more of an all-inclusive resort combined with a theme park, ON SEA! You can go skydiving, surfing, bumper cars, rock climbing and more. With all the incredible activities onboard, you’ll be asking yourself “Am I really having this experience on a cruise ship?”

Scroll down for a list of top things to do. PLUS extra tips that can help you plan and enjoy the most out of your cruise.

17 Attractions & Things to Do

1. enjoy your luxurious stateroom.

Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

It was my first time to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise & I was especially excited to check out the accommodations onboard.

I stayed in their balcony stateroom and it did not disappoint! The space was certainly big enough for my lonesome. I enjoyed restful sleep on the extra comfy bed plushed with luxurious crisp linens. The stateroom is designed for two people and it can accommodate up to four people thanks to the pull-out sofa bed.

All staterooms and suites are maintained by a stateroom attendant. The bed was pristinely made up every time I came into the room.

I loved the balcony & sitting area. It’s the perfect place to unwind after enjoying the many activities onboard and shore excursion tours. There’s in-room WiFi available, so you can stay connected while you’re on holiday.

Rest assured you can indulge in delicious food during the entire journey. There’s over 20 food & beverage options onboard.

Quantum of the Seas offers complimentary restaurants and cafes featuring buffet-style dining or multi-course menus. These complimentary options are included in the cruise fare. You can grab or order all-you-can from breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even satisfy your late-night cravings.

Complimentary dining at Quantum of the Seas

3. Indulge in Specialty Dining

Jamie's Italian - Quantum of the Seas

You can also dine at the specialty dining restaurants onboard (for a fee, in addition to the cruise fare). During the cruise, we tried Jamie’s Italian, the restaurant created celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. Whatever you can find in a Jamie’s Italian restaurant on land, the same product you can find on the ship. The main difference is that they charge a flat fee, which includes most of the items on the menu. You can try different dishes to your heart and stomach’s content!

Specialty and ala-carte dining at Quantum of the Seas

Jamie’s Italian — Italian restaurant by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.

Devinly Decadence — American Healthy Cooking.

Chops Grille — American-style steakhouse.

Izumi — Pan Asian, Japanese.

Kung Fu Panda Noodle Shop

La Patisserie

Johnny Rockets

4. Get Immersed in Starwater

Starwater show at Two70 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Starwater is one of the best performance shows I’ve seen anywhere, on land and at sea! It’s one attraction you shouldn’t miss! I was left spellbound by the caliber of the talent plus the immersive high-tech visuals at the Two70 theatre.

I was completely mesmerized by the singing, dancing & choreography. Many of the numbers include aerial acrobatic feats, which was stunning to watch. Elevating the theatrics beyond anything I would have expected on a cruise is the animated backdrop, six Roboscreens and a panoramic Visarama projection screen displaying stunning digital imagery. The 12K high definition Visarama screen spans the entire back of the ship and is three decks high!

5. Relax at the Pool Areas and Sun Deck

Outdoor Pool Deck 14 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

You can find Quantum of the Seas’ swimming pools on Deck 14. There’s a large outdoor pool surrounded by sun loungers where you can get a good tan. Beside it is the H2O Zone, a mini water park for kids.

A giant LED screen overlooks the outdoor pool. Fancy watching movies at night, under the stars?

I’m sure my fellow Asians would be happy to know there’s a covered pool area protected by a soaring glass roof and the adults-only Solarium with cascading pools reminiscent of a tropical stream. Four Jacuzzi-style hot-jetted tubs called Whirlpools are also found on the deck beside the outdoor and indoor pools.

6. Grab a Snack and Coffee at Two70°

Two70° deserves a special mention because it’s one of my favorite parts of the ship. I’ve already mentioned that it’s used as a theatre at night for the Starwater show. During the day, Two70° transforms into a beautiful space that’s part cafe, part bar, and part activity space. The Visarama screen is hidden away, revealing the giant floor-to-ceiling glass windows with magnificent 270-degree sea views.

Two70 - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The adjacent Cafe Two70 (complimentary) serves breakfast and lunch. Two70° is THE place to enjoy coffee and food with a scenic ambiance.

7. See the View from North Star

The North Star is one of the iconic features of the ship that’s easy to spot. Like a unicorn’s horn, the crane-like structure can be found soaring on top of the ship. At the end is a glass capsule-shaped viewing pod that rises 300 feet above sea level and provides 360-degree views.

North Star - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

While the ship is in port, in cities like Hong Kong and Singapore where the downtown area is relatively near the cruise terminal, the North Star offers beautiful views overlooking the cityscape. While at sea, the North Star’s pod can be maneuvered out over the water providing a thrilling view.

8. Go Skydiving at Ripcord by iFly

Ripcord by iFly - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Ever wanted to know what’s it like to float on air? Well, you can have a go at RipCord by iFly and have your flying experience at seas. Quantum of the Seas is the first-ever ship to have a wind tunnel installed on a cruise ship. It was my first time to try a free-fall skydiving simulator. It was a lot of fun from suiting up to the actual flight, which lasted around “60 seconds.”

9. Hang Ten at FlowRider

FlowRider - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Found beside Ripcord by iFly is the surf simulator called FlowRider, another exciting feature that’s available on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum-class ships. The FlowRider allows participants to catch artificially generated waves by “bodyboarding” (with a boogie board) or “flowboarding” (similar to surfing but with a smaller board).

10. Get Active

Fitness Gym - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

There are plenty of options onboard for those who want to stay fit during the cruise or simply want to do something active between rounds at the buffet. The fitness gym is complete with cardio machines, weight machines, and free weights. There’s even a dedicated space to do yoga. Best of all, the gym, which occupies almost the entire forward (front) part of Deck 16, offers amazing unobstructed sea views.

If you want to take in the view and sea breeze while running laps, you can even find a 553-meter running/jogging track on Deck 15.

The multi-purpose SeaPlex indoor sports and entertainment arena hosts different activities including soccer, basketball, volleyball and organized activities like dance classes.

11. Play Games

Seaplex bumper cars - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The SeaPlex is also a great venue for games and fun activities. Here, you can find areas for foosball, table tennis, air hockey, the Xbox Live Lounge, and an arcade room. Bumper cars and rollerskating sessions are held at the SeaPlex. You can check the timings of all activities in the Cruise Compass (daily schedule planner).

12. See the Royal Theatre Shows

Royal Theater show - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Another good reason to check the Cruise Compass is the schedule of the evening shows at the Royal Theatre. I was impressed with all the entertaining shows that we watched! Like Starwater, the shows feature world-class performers and spectacular choreography thanks to Royal Caribbean’s own in-house production company.

13. Go Shopping

Royal Esplanade - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Head to the shops near the Royal Esplanade on Deck 4 and The Via on Deck 5 for your retail therapy session. Enjoy duty-free shopping & and a wide selection from health & wellness products, make-up, watches & eye-wear to art pieces.

14. Explore The Decks

Butterfly Wall at the Elevators (Lifts) - Quantum of the Seas by

With a total of 16 floors, the massive Quantum of the Seas offers lots of Instagramable photo opportunities. Here are some of my favorite spots:

Royal Esplanade

Bird’s eye view of the whitewater trailing behind the cruise ship — Open area at the aft (back) of Deck 14. Al-fresco area at the backmost part of Windjammer. Have your photographer go up the stairs for a stunning top-to-bottom angle.

Giant Magenta Bear — Deck 15, beside the rock climbing wall

The Via — In front of Jamie’s Italian and Tiffany & Co.

Butterfly Wall — Aft Elevator Lifts. A glass-bottom floor can be found at the stairs Deck 14-15.

Retro Van and Carpe Diem Wall — Deck 15 aft, along the running track

American Icon Grill

15. Have a Drink at the Bionic Bar

Bionic Bar - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

Experience a high-tech bar at the Bionic Bar. Just enter your order on a tablet to get the robot bartender to prepare your drink!

16. Celebrate Your Special Day

Marcos' birthday dinner - Quantum of the Seas by Royal Caribbean

The trip was very memorable not only because it was my first time to go on a Royal Caribbean cruise, but my birthday also happened to fall on the day while we at sea. Going on a cruise is one of the best ways to celebrate special occasions since you’ll be treated to a feast and lots of fun activities all day.

17. Experience the Shore Excursions

Marcos enjoying Vietnamese Phin Coffee, Hoi An

One of the main benefits of going on a cruise is getting to travel to different places in one trip. You can rest easy in your comfortable stateroom and wake up to a new adventure every day. The cruise itinerary typically alternates days at sea with a day docked at port, during which you can take a shore excursion and go about exploring.

Cruising Alaska on Quantum of the Seas

Written by theresa russell, alaska | cruises | destinations | north america | travel.

Don’t rule out the early and late seasons for cruising Alaska. Here are tips for Cruising Alaska on Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas.

When my friend asked me if I wanted to sail with her and told me I could choose any itinerary, I agreed. Immediately I looked for a cruise on her favorite cruise line, Royal Caribbean. I perused the offerings, knowing that Alaska would be at the top of my list. I found not only a cruise sailing Alaska but also a ship that was new to me— Quantum of the Seas . My friend agreed to cruising Alaska, and we both anxiously anticipated our sailing date in early May.

What's in This Article:

Pre-Cruise Preparation Before Cruising Alaska

We followed the COVID protocols, and both tested negative before flying to Seattle. We left the night before; something highly recommended. With all the flight delays and cancellations, we didn’t want to take any chances of missing our trip. We used the Royal Caribbean app to register for the cruise.

We booked a night at the W Hotel, knowing how close it was to the port. It wasn’t until the middle of the night that we realized that Royal Caribbean sails out of the northern port that isn’t close to the downtown area or convenient for exploring downtown attractions. That meant we could not fill our time with any in-town diversions before departure.

Embarkation

The embarkation process seemed disorganized. The line outside the terminal extended far from the entries. Even though boarding times are assigned, everybody must have chosen the same boarding slot.

Because we were sailing to Victoria, Canada , we had to show a specific form to enter Canada. We filled it out before arriving at the pier. The boarding agents asked us to show that form along with our negative COVID test results and vaccination cards at several checkpoints.

After passing through all the checkpoints, we finally boarded Quantum of the Seas and were ready to embark on our week-long cruise to Alaska!

North to Alaska

We headed to our balcony stateroom, thinking it might be ready so that we could drop our carry-on luggage. Finding the doors locked, we kept our luggage with us.

First on our agenda was to find lunch as we had skipped breakfast. Although the crew directed us to Windjammer Café, I knew a smaller spot would serve lunch, so we sought out The Café @270. One of my favorite choices is the Kummelweck sandwich. The venue was short-staffed, a problem plaguing many ships, but we were in no rush. Waiting in line was worth it, as it was the best Kummelweck I have had!

We explored the ship for the rest of the day, and the next as it was was a sea day. We wanted to be flexible, so we had chosen My Time Dining, enabling us to choose flexible dining times. Unfortunately, reservations were highly recommended for My Time Dining, defeating the purpose. We followed the advice of the Maitre d’ and booked a specific hour to eat for most of the nights. It worked out fine in the end.

Cruising Alaska on Quantum Class

The first ship in the Quantum Class, our large home for the week, originally sailed in China. Remnants of the décor and signage remained on Quantum of the Seas . Having sailed on Anthem of the Seas , I was familiar with the ship’s layout. Although large, there is plenty of space to get outdoors, something essential for cruising Alaska .

Whimsical artworks graced the backs of the elevators bringing smiles to our faces. There was a variety of artwork to admire throughout the ship.

We settled into our comfortable balcony stateroom and planned our days. We had several exciting ports and had shore excursions in many of them.

Icy Strait Point

Our first port of call was Icy Strait Point (ISP) , one of my favorite ports because it remains relatively natural and non-commercial around the port area.  I hadn’t been to ISP for several years, and much had changed. The new Wilderness Landing pier was functional, and another ship shared the dock with us. This pier brings guests into a different area of the port. A gondola system serves to transport people back and forth from this pier to the Ocean Landing pier and the Cannery area.

Another new gondola, SKYGLiDER , takes passengers up a steep mountainside to either a zipline, hiking trails, or expansive views of the area.

We did have a chance to try both new gondolas, but our main goal for the day was to go whale watching. This area had lots of whale activity, and the last time I was here, I spoke with fellow passengers on a previous cruise who did this excursion and saw a breaching whale. That was something I hoped to see.

I boarded a rather large whale-watching boat and found a spot to park myself on the aft deck. The boat did have inside seating, but I thought it would be easier to move about looking for the best potential view of a breaching whale if I stayed outside. I already know from experience how difficult it is to photograph whales. I proudly pointed out the tiny gray spot in my photos to show that I spotted a whale on previous trips. My delusions convinced me I would get an award-winning shot of a breaching humpback. I saw plenty of whales, even breaching whales, but only got photos of gray spots in the water. Yet, I accomplished my mission.

A Stop in Skagway While Cruising Alaska

The Gateway to the Klondike and a small old west town surrounded by mountains, Skagway is also home to the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway . A journey to the summit of the historic railway filled my agenda for the day. The train climbs to nearly 3000 feet passing through several distinct ecosystems. Hugging the edge of the mountain and tracing the path that gold prospectors took, this train ride combines history with outstanding scenery and a relaxing journey.

Back in town, it’s fun to check out the shops and locally made items. My favorite thing is to grab a beer at one of the local breweries and stroll the main street looking at the interesting architecture.

Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier

Just as exciting as seeing a breaching whale is watching a glacier calving. I was hoping for that amazing experience, but it didn’t happen on this trip.

As we were cruising Endicott Arm, the ship suddenly stopped. The captain came on the loudspeaker to announce that we would have to abort the journey to see Dawes Glacier because of the amount of ice in the Endicott Arm. After all, we weren’t on an ice breaker. Despite the disappointment, the day was lovely, the scenery outstanding, and I was in Alaska!

One of the best reasons to take a cruise in Alaska is that the ship can easily reach many places that aren’t so convenient or accessible by road. Then there’s also that thing about having to pack and move every day, which a cruise eliminates.

Juneau, the capital, is one of those places inaccessible by road. It also seems quite large compared to the other ports we visited earlier on this cruise. Having been to Juneau several times, the plan today was to stroll around to see what was new and to take the Goldbelt Tram to the top of Mount Roberts to see the views.

View from the top of the Goldbelt Tram in Juneau

Mendenhall Glacier is a popular destination, and whale watching in Juneau is good, but we chose to stay in town. New sculptures line the newly configured pier.

On the way to try a new brewery, we passed by an area of food stands that seemed very popular. Since we were dining at Wonderland on the ship this evening, we opted to have a beer at Devil’s Club Brewing Co., and then we returned to the ship for an excellent meal of innovative cuisine.

Our short stop in Victoria allowed us enough time to walk from the ship to Fisherman’s Wharf. After watching seals play in the water, we walked back to Quantum of the Seas,  ready to relax on our sea day back to Seattle.

Final Thoughts on Cruising Alaska

We disembarked with ease and sent our luggage directly to the airport via the free Port Valet service offered by Seattle. We toured around town using our CityPASS before our late flight, inadvertently discovering that the airline had canceled our flights home. But that’s a story for another time.

Alaska never disappoints, and the weather was perfect for our week-long spring cruise on Quantum of the Seas . The ship is ideal for families because of the many options for adults and children, not that I can think of anything more entertaining than Alaska itself. But during the sea days, it’s a great time to take advantage of some of the Quantum of the Seas events – trivia, game shows, shows, the casino, shopping, and more. The great service-oriented crew certainly added to the entire experience.

As for Alaska, this was my first time sailing so early in the spring. It worked out perfectly. Packing the right gear prepares you for any weather situation, so don’t rule out the early and late seasons. Additionally, better rates are often available during the “shoulder” seasons, and Alaska is grand no matter when you visit. So when you’re planning on cruising Alaska or anywhere else, let Wander with Wonder be your cruise guide .

Don't rule out the early and late seasons for cruising Alaska. Here are tips for Cruising Alaska on Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.

One look at lovely Sitka and you'll know why Alexander Baranof, governor of the Russian American Company, decided to build his "castle" here. With views of island-studded waters and stately spruce forests reaching to the water's edge, Sitka is considered Alaska's most beautiful seaside town. Sitka's past is a unique blend of Tlingit culture and Russian history. Our historic and scenic community is situated on Baranof Island, nestled between forested mountains and the great Pacific Ocean, on the outer waters of Alaska's Inside Passage. Sitka offers a combination of Native culture, Russian history, and Alaskan wilderness which will provide a diverse and unequaled experience. Wildlife adds to Sitka's natural beauty. Our mild climate, rich habitat and relatively low human population make Sitka one of the best places to view wildlife. Nearby waters are a popular feeding ground for humpback whales in the late fall and early spring. Summertime provides a wonderful opportunity to view tufted puffins and other sea birds at St. Lazaria National Wildlife Refuge. While out on the ocean, you may also spot sea otters, sea lions and other marine wildlife. Sitka lies at the heart of the largest temperate rain forest in the world, the Tongass National Forest. Enjoy the fresh outdoors on well-marked mountain trails. Take to the water for a picturesque boat trip or kayaking adventure among nearby islands or charter a boat to nearby fishing grounds to fish for world-class salmon and halibut.

Endicott Arm

shore excursions quantum of the seas

Amid a forest of trees and a pristine mountain expanse you'll find a steep waterway otherwise known as Endicott Arm. The "arm" pierces 30 miles into the Coast Mountain Range offering up some spectacular sights for cruise passengers. Floating with you in Endicott Arm are 3-story pieces of ice that have "calved" (split) from the glaciers that line the waterway. Some of those chunks of ice are as long as a city block; some are as small as an ice cube. A visit to Endicott Arm proves that the best way to see and appreciate the wildlife and glaciers of Alaska is from the window or railing of your cruise ship. Keep those binoculars handy. As you move slowly and silently through the arm look for black and brown bears, mountain goats, wolverines, Sitka black-tailed deer, eagles, sea lions and harbor seals. Spectacular wildlife framed by glistening glaciers and blue, blue waters. Just another day in Alaska!

shore excursions quantum of the seas

Considered the "gem" of Southeast Alaska, the city is nestled against the ocean, tucked tight against the mountains and back-dropped by the lush green of the largest national forest in the United States, the Tongass. Visitors will find that Juneau is not only the state's capital, but it's also a melting pot of history, unique topography and jaw-dropping scenery that is found nowhere else on the planet. Whether it's wildlife viewing, glacier trekking, ziplining or just shopping for locally created artwork, visitors to this remote yet extraordinary region will certainly find a bit of "Alaska" to take home.

Victoria/Canada

shore excursions quantum of the seas

Victoria, capital of British Columbia, sits on the craggy southern end of Vancouver Island. With abundant parkland, it’s known for outdoor activities. The city's British colonial past shows in its Victorian architecture, including stately Craigdarroch Castle mansion. Butchart Gardens, with 55 acres of vivid floral displays, plus statuary, water features and a carousel, is one of many formal gardens in the city.
