Explore Visakhapatnam city and its best places to visit

Sprawling along the pristine waters of the Bay of Bengal, Visakhapatnam, the largest city of Andhra Pradesh, is a beach paradise. Boasting stretches of golden sand kissed by tranquil waters, the city is surrounded by picturesque waterfalls, lush forests and scenic hill stations. Popularly known as Vizag, the city is home to the oldest shipyard in the country, ancient temples and spectacular caves.

The main attraction in the city is a submarine-turned-museum, the first of its kind in Asia. Exploring life in the underbelly of the sea as you move through the various rooms that house exhibits showing the same can be an exciting experience. Borra caves, one of the largest in the country, are a delight for adventure lovers, who get to walk to the deep reaches of the warmly-lit caves. The city is peppered with parks and gardens, where visitors can laze around and soak in the natural beauty.

Built around 11th century, Visakhapatnam is popularly called the city of destiny, referring to its soulful natural beauty. It is also the headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Navy. History says Visakhapatnam was ruled by king Visakha Varma, who built a temple here in the name of Lord Visakha and hence the city was minted. It is said Visakhapatnam was once a part of the empire of Kalinga, where emperor Ashoka fought a fierce battle. Primarily an industrial city, it draws a large number of tourists throughout the year. It is fondly called as "Jewel on the Coromandel Coast."

visakhapatnam ki tourist places

Last Updated on April 8, 2022 by admin

Call it Visakhapatnam or Vizag, it does not feature on the must-visit tourist places in India. And that notion should be immediately changed because Visakhapatnam for tourism is amazing. I did not google things to do in Visakhapatnam or the best places to visit in Visakhapatnam as I was on a work trip and my day was action-packed. It was also expected to rain due to the tropical Cyclone Gulab . I planned to stay indoors as I flew on my work trip from Ahmedabad .

And I regretted not reading what to visit in Visakhapatnam the moment my flight started its descend. My flight window showed beaches and a sharp turn later, some mountains. As I landed and saw some more mountains, I kept thinking, Visakhapatnam is supposed to be a port city and have beaches and all I could see was mountains surrounding it.

This intrigued me and I mentally tried to arrange my work schedule so I could spend some time visiting a couple of places and praying that Visakhapatnam weather doesn’t play spoilsport.

Table of Contents

Where is Visakhapatnam situated?

Visakhapatnam is situated in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Visakhapatnam is a port city having headquarters of Eastern Naval Command on the coast of the Bay of Bengal and surrounded on three sides by the overlapping mountain ranges. Vizag’s shipyard is this country’s oldest and one of the largest shipyards, and the only natural harbour on the East Coast.

Due to the naval base, Visakhapatnamfor for living is a preferred choice for ex-navy and maintains a cosmopolitan culture.

Best places to visit in Visakhapatnam (Vizag)

Visakhapatnam is a class A city and has mountain ranges, valleys naturally formed caves, temples, beaches, museums and even Buddhist pilgrimage sites.  Visakhapatnam is also the ninth cleanest city in India (Swachh Sarvekshan ranking, 2021).

Naval Submarine Museum | Kursura Submarine Museum

If you have seen the movie, Ghazi Attack , you can relate to this museum so much and feel super proud about it. An actual submarine that was used in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 is now converted into a museum. The museum consists of pictures of artefacts and an exhibition of original machinery that depict the life of warriors. It is one of the best tourist places in Visakhapatnam.

Kursura submarine was commissioned in 1969 and served the nation for over 30 years, where it played a key role in patrol missions. The submarine also participated in naval exercises with other nations and made many goodwill visits to other countries. After decommissioning, it was towed to RK Beach in Visakhapatnam and was established as a museum ship, which is the first submarine museum in South Asia. Towing the submarine 600 metres to its final location took 18 months and cost approximately Rs. 6 crores (60 million).

I swelled with pride looking at the mammoth size of the submarine, the engineering functions and the space utilization with which it served for three decades. And that is why the submarine is of the must-visit places in Visakhapatnam.

Tip: The museum is open till 9 pm so you plan to visit it at the end of the day.

Submarine museum Vizag entry fees: Rs. 40 per adult and Rs. 20 per child

Camera fees: Rs. 50 per camera

TU 142 Aircraft Museum

On the road opposite the submarine, the museum is the Aircraft TU-142M museum which was commissioned in the year 2017. After 29 years of service, the TU-142M aircraft of the Indian Navy was decommissioned and converted into a museum. If you are an enthusiats that loves aircrafts then this is one of the best places to visit in Visakhapatnam.

You can enter the actual aircraft, but before that there is an interpretation centre developed wherein various equipment and parts of aircraft are displayed inside an exhibition hall. Types of equipment like sonobuoys, propeller, engine, survival kit, anti-submarine missile, data recorder etc are displayed with all details. The design of the aircraft was inspired by the bird ‘Albatross’ by a Russian designer Tupolev. It is the world’s heaviest and fastest flying turboprop aircraft.

After visiting the exhibition hall you will enter into the aircraft. Photography is not allowed inside the aircraft. After seeing various equipment inside the plane you can come out of the aircraft from its front door to then take a photo of the aircraft. You need skills and a wide frame lens to photograph it in one frame!

Submarine museum Vizag entry fees: Rs. 70 per adult.

Camera fees: Included in entry fees. Photography is prohibited inside the aircraft.

Kailasagiri – Best parks in Visakhapatnam | Best places to visit in Visakhapatnam

All the local residents told me to visit Kailasagiri as it is one of the must-visit destinations in Visakhapatnam. Located in the heart of the city, it is perched at a height of 560 feet and offers spectacular views of the city and the east coast. You can take a ropeway to reach the hilltop.

Considered to be a well-known attraction due to the huge idols of Shiva and Parvathi, this is a well-known picnic spot amongst the locals and tourists alike which offers plenty of beautiful viewpoints like Shiva Parvathi Statue, Shanku Chakra Naama, Floral Clock, Jungle Trails, Food Courts, 7 Wonders of Vizag, Shiva Temple, Titanic View Point, etc. You can also hop into the toy train operating at the park which takes a circular tour of this garden at the hilltop.

Go there for the views of Rushikonda Beach!

Entry fees: Rs. 10 per adult (parking fees for vehicle/car/bus extra)

Ropeway fees: Rs. 10 0 per adult (round trip)

Toy car fees: Rs.  150 per adult

Kailasagiri - Best parks in Visakhapatnam

Bheemili Beach

Bheemunipatnam (popularly known as Bheemili)  is one of the longest beaches in the country. Unlike RK beach or Rushikonda beach, there are fewer tourists here which according to me are brownie points. It is easily one of the most offbeat places in Visakhapatnam and can also pass off as romantic places near Visakhapatnam for couples.

Located about 25 km from Visakhapatnam, Bheemili beach has its own character and is one of the hidden places in Vizag. Driving from Visakhapatnam to Bheemili is amazing as you can see the coast on your right side most time and mountains straight ahead in front of you. The Beemili beach is said to be safe for swimming as compared to RK or Rushikonda, but I’d not recommend it because I found it to be a bit dirty, thanks to a village settlement nearby.

There is a major Dutch settlement of the 17th century near the beach. The town also contains one of the oldest Christian cemeteries on the coast.

Have more time on hand? You may plan a Visakhapatnam to Araku valley by car and Borra Caves. Read about Beach camping.

Dolphin’s Nose

A fascinating viewpoint offering gorgeous views of the city as well as of the coastline, the Dolphin’s Nose happens to be one of the must-visit places in Visakhapatnam. Named after the large rock viewpoint that resembles the shape of a dolphin’s nose, there is also a lighthouse which is one of the sought after attractions.

I did not have the time to go all the way, it is about 10kms from the city, but clicked it from RK beach, so yes it is visible from far.

VUDA Park – Visakhapatnam Best Places

VUDA Park, also known as Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority Park (VMRDA) is a perfect family outing and picnic place in Visakhapatnam. With a lovely manicured garden, a skating rink and a musical dancing fountain it is favourite among the locals and the tourists. Many Vizag Tours Packages include this park in their list of things to do in Vizag. The park is located near RK Beach.

Visakhapatnam Film City | Ramanaidu Film Studio

Probably the newest addition to Visakhapatnam Tourism, the Ramanaidu film studio is located at the top of a hill. Surrounded by hills on one side and sea on the other side, this film studio is used by several film producers of nearby states to produce movies in national and regional languages.

Entry fees: Rs. 35 per adult, Rs 40 per camera

Simhachalam Temple

Out of the many Hindu Temples in Visakhapatnam , Simhachalam Temple is one of the most popular and frequented temples in Visakhapatnam. It is a famous religious site that is frequented by the locals and all the pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and has a history that dates back to the 9th century when the Later Cholas founded it. It is one of the best places to visit in Visakhapatnam for the journey within.

Entry fee: Free

Simhachalam Temple Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam famous food

Although the traditional Andhra Pradesh food is on the spicier side, there is no dearth of street food in Visakhapatnam that is more ‘suited’ for the tourist’s taste. While Idli and Dosa are popular, other typical Indian street foods like Pav Bhaji and Chat are available in plenty.

Punugulu Karam is a populr snack. It is a deep-fried snack made with urad dal and rice batter. These crispy orbs are served with peanut and coconut chutneys.

What is a good beach without the Tomato Bajji? Tomato Bajji is readily available on the beaches of Visakhapatnam. This is made of fresh tomatoes that are coated with gram flour and deep-fried and cut into half, like cups, with the tomato flesh scooped out. Served with crunchy peanuts these are a must-try!

Kalakand is Visakhapatnam famous sweet. Made with milk, cottage cheese and ghee, Kalakand makes its presence felt in every local festival. It comes in two variants, brown and white and the brown Kalakand is more popular than its white counterpart in Visakhapatnam.

Weekend getaways from Visakhapatnam – Araku Valley

Araku Valley is one of the best weekend getaways from Vizag. Situated only 100 km away, a one day trip is possible, however, it is ideal to spend at least a day here exploring Coffee museum Araku, the waterfalls and especially Borra Caves in Araku valley. Borra caves are naturally formed Stalactites and stalagmites caves that have interesting shapes that lend a surreal aura to the caves. I have been to such caves before – Mawsmai Caves is one of the top tourist places in Meghalaya and Halong Bay, Vietnam .

Best time to visit Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam gets super hot and humid during summers and it becomes difficult to move around as a tourist. The best and comfortable time to visit Visakhapatnam is in winter in the months of October to March.

How to Reach Visakhapatnam

By Air Visakhapatnam airport is connected with many major cities of India like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad. The airport is 16 km away from the city centre.

By Train Visakhapatnam as a train station and good connectivity to Chennai to Delhi stations.

By Road Visakhapatnam has well serviced with public transport services. There are numerous routes going towards the city from the main metropolis of south and central India including Chennai (829 km), Hyderabad (620 km) and Vijayawada (355 km).

Local travel in Visakhapatnam | Cab services in Visakhapatnam

While Visakhapatnam cab rental is possible through a travel agency, App-based cabs like Ola and Uber are available in the city and up to a few places around. It may be difficult to get a cab at Bheemili beach so one might want to book a few hours rental. Other than this, Auto-rickshaws are also easily available but they do not follow a rate card and may charge more once they know you are the tourist.

You may want to hail an autorickshaw for places such as the RK Beach, Naval Submarine museum and Aircraft museum as everything is near to each other.

Best time to visit Visakhapatnam - Bay of Bengal Views from Vizag mountains

Where to stay in Visakhapatnam

Stay options are great in Visakhapatnam with beach view properties. There are many options from luxurious resorts to humble homestays overlooking the best views. Here are some of the options for accommodation in Visakhapatnam.

Since I was on a work trip, I was put up at Fairfield by Marriott Visakhapatnam which is very close to the airport. Not very far from the city, but one cannot walk to the city centre. You need some kind of transport to get there.

Luxury: Novotel Visakhapatnam Varun Beach , Four Points By Sheraton Visakhapatnam

' src=

' src=

I’d love to visit these museums and submarines. Not sure if I’ll ever get a chance to go to Vizag, however. Used to have friends there, but they moved.

' src=

Museums and Beaches! Visakhapatnam seems like my kinda place to visit! Beautifully captured pictures.

' src=

Never been to India. I hope to visit soon. I would love the submarine and aircraft museums. Thanks for sharing!

' src=

This post brought back so many memories! I loved Kailashgiri and Bheemili when I used to visit Vizag! Totally would recommend them like you.

' src=

Wow… Visakhapatnam seems like my kinda place to visit!. Never realized there are so many amazing places over there. I Would definitely want to visit one day and check some of these places out.

' src=

Wow this is so informative! Loved the article.. Already bookmarked it for my trip. Thank u for sharing

' src=

In spite of having served in the Indian Navy, I have never been to Visakhapatnam. It has been on my “Take the kids here” list for a long time now. Lovely read 🙂

' src=

I’m yet to visit Vizag. This post is now tempting me 🙂

' src=

Never been there but goo to know about this place. I cannot wait to go 🙂

Haha do add it to your must visit places in India!

' src=

Looks like a great place to visit! I’m particularly drawn to Bheemili Beach – it looks gorgeous! But I’d also want to visit the floral clock because I just saw one on my trip to Panama and now I think they’re just the coolest things!

Oh there are so many floral clocks in India. We are obsessed with it 😀

' src=

Nice post! Certainly a different view on India than what I saw when I was there. Maybe I should go back for some additional exploring 🙂

Haha i was surprised myself! India is full of surprises even for its nationals 🙂

' src=

Whoah, this looks phenomenal! Bheemili Beach looks like an absolute dream. Visakhapatnam has never been on my list but I’m definitely pinning this for future travel ideas. Thanks, Ketki, great post!

Glad to know that Indian destinations are high on your list 🙂

' src=

Visited this place 15 years back and the submarine is very vivid in my memory. Is not it the same one used during Ghazi attack?

Yup it is! The story is based on this submarine only 🙂

' src=

I have seen pics of vizag on social media many times, its beaches and view points seems tempting.I would love to visit this city and you have described short guide for it. Informative post on Vizag.

' src=

I’ve never heard of this place but it looks like it has tons of great things to do! I’d love to tour a submarine. And the view from Kailasagiri looks stunning!

' src=

I lived in this city for 2 years. Absolutely stunning and safe place to live. I miss Vizag so much

' src=

I like the idea of a whole submarine turned into a museum. I’ve never been in one and yet my cousin did part of his military service in one… Did the navy make a point of serving high quality food onboard? I heard from my cousin that it’s an essential part of making sure that the sailors stay sane during the long weeks underwater…

' src=

Is that a view of Rushikonda Beach..so pretty! We plan to visit Araku Valley from Vizag during monsoons. A day in Vizag should be good to experience all that you mention here.

' src=

Despite the bad weather this place seem stunning and worth to be visited. I have never heard about this place and will have more information about.

' src=

I haven’t set foot on India and there are so many cities/regions to go to. This is the first time I am hearing of Visakhapatnam and it does sound different. It is interesting that you didn’t choose to highlight a temple!

Being an Indian, I don’t go to temples so recommending something I don’t go to is not fair. Also temples are a very tiny portion of what the city offers.

' src=

I’m keen to go to India, as your posts make it seem so inviting. The view of Rushikonda beach looks beautiful. The submarine museum sounds very interesting too.

' src=

The submarine museum looks very cool, with some fascinating history. It’s not something I would have expected to find. It looks like the Kailasagiri viewpoint is a must, and I could not resist Bheemili beach, even though you say it’s not that clean. I looks beautiful, so I hope it gets cleaned up.

' src=

That beach is particularly nice…but my partner would want to go to both of the museums – he loves military museums that let you into the planes and other machinery. And good tip about visiting the submarine at night – we have a submarine museum where I live and it gets hot during the day.

' src=

There are always places in the world that I have never heard of before – very exciting! The submarine I think great. I have also looked at one before and found it pretty tight. Being on the road for longer would not be for me. I like the beach. Can you take a nice bath there?

' src=

I’ve never heard of this place but it looks really interesting and full of lots of different things to do too from beaches to museums. I love that the museum is inside the submarine, what a cool experience it would be to actually go inside and see it first hand.

' src=

Lots of interesting things to do here. Submarines are so fascinating so that would be on my list for sure, and I’d love to see Kailasagiri and the view from there as well.

' src=

Ru not visited borra caves. Aruku velly and near places 100km from vizag city its also belongs to vizag

Unfortunately I did not have time to visit Araku valley. Hopefully next time 🙂

There are several food kiosks on the way that serve snacks and beverages especially Bamboo Chicken and fresh Coconut Water. Taking a pit stop for a bite before proceeding won't be disappointing.

History of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk in the 17th-19th centuries.

In 1648, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the fortress of Sinbirsk was founded on the right bank of the Volga River in order to protect the eastern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from the raids of nomadic tribes (Nogai Tatars), as well as to colonize the Volga region.

In the fall of 1670, Sinbirsk was unsuccessfully besieged by the army of Stepan Razin - the Don Cossack, who was the leader of the 1670-1671 uprising, the largest in the history of pre-Petrine Russia. In 1678, 1,579 people lived in Sinbirsk.

In 1729, the coat of arms of Sinbirsk was approved - a white pillar topped with a golden crown in the azure field. In 1780, Sinbirsk was renamed Simbirsk. In 1793, 13,317 people lived in this town.

In 1812, Ivan Goncharov, a famous Russian novelist and critic, was born in Simbirsk. In 1836, Emperor Nicholas I visited Simbirsk and made a lot of orders for the construction of new buildings in the town, especially in its central part. In 1840, the Simbirsk Theological Seminary was opened.

More Historical Facts…

In 1845, a monument to Nikolay Karamzin (1766-1826) was opened - the author of one of the first generalizing works on the history of Russia and a reformer of the Russian literary language, who was born near Simbirsk. Today, this monument erected in Karamzin Public Garden is one of the symbols of Ulyanovsk. In 1848, one of the first libraries in the Volga region was opened in this town - the Karamzin Public Library.

In the summer of 1864, a terrible fire occurred in Simbirsk, which lasted 9 days. Only one fourth of the town buildings survived. In 1867, the merchant Yurgens opened the first bookstore in Simbirsk. In 1870, the future “leader of the world revolution” Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk. Alexander Kerensky, a prominent Russian politician and statesman, was born here in 1881. According to the 1897 census, 43.3 thousand people lived in Simbirsk.

Ulyanovsk in the first half of the 20th century

From 1908 to 1912, Igor Kurchatov, the future creator of the Soviet atomic bomb, lived in Simbirsk with his parents and studied at the local gymnasium. In 1916, the construction of the Imperial Bridge over the Volga River was completed in Simbirsk. With a length of 2,089 meters, it was the longest bridge in the Russian Empire at that time.

After the First World War and the Russian Civil War, the city’s industry was in ruin. During the war years, not a single building was constructed in Simbirsk, street lighting disappeared, boulevards and parks fell into disrepair, up to a hundred residential buildings were destroyed.

On May 9, 1924, in connection with the death of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk, and Simbirsk Governorate - into Ulyanovsk Governorate. Other proposed options for the new name of the city were such as “Lenin”, “Leninsk”, “Ilyich”.

By the end of the 1930s, almost all churches in Ulyanovsk were destroyed or used for other purposes. On the eve of the Second World War, Ulyanovsk was a provincial city with a population of about 110 thousand people. There were no large industrial enterprises, with the exception of the 3rd State Plant named after Volodarsky (Ulyanovsk Cartridge Plant) - one of the oldest defense enterprises in Russia, specializing in the production of cartridges for rifled weapons.

During the Second World War, Ulyanovsk became the place of evacuation of 17 industrial enterprises from the occupied regions and the front line. The Minsk Tank School, renamed the 2nd Ulyanovsk Tank School, was relocated from Minsk, the Mogilev Military Infantry School, which became the Ulyanovsk Military Infantry School, was relocated from Mogilev. In 1942, a medical institute evacuated from Voronezh began to work in Ulyanovsk.

From October 1941 to August 1943, the Moscow Patriarchate was in evacuation in Ulyanovsk, headed by Metropolitan Sergius. From 1942 to 1945, Andrei Sakharov, the future creator of the hydrogen bomb, academician and human rights activist worked at the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant.

On January 19, 1943, Ulyanovsk became the center of the newly formed Ulyanovsk Oblast. From the second half of 1941 to the beginning of 1942, the population of Ulyanovsk, due to the evacuees, doubled and amounted to more than 200 thousand people. By 1945, as a result of re-evacuation, it decreased by 50 thousand and amounted to 152 thousand people.

Ulyanovsk after the Second World War

In the post-war period, Ulyanovsk became an industrial city. In 1953, during the construction of the Volga cascade of hydroelectric power plants, part of Ulyanovsk was included in the flooding zone of the Kuibyshev reservoir. In 1957, the Ulyanovsk airport was built. Since the 1960s, thanks to the high rates of housing and industrial construction, Ulyanovsk began to grow rapidly both in area and in population. On May 5, 1967, the 300,000th resident of the city was born.

In the 1969-1970s, in honor of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin, the historical center of Ulyanovsk was built up with modern buildings: the hotel “Sovetskaya”, the House of Artists, the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, the hotel “Venets”, the new railway station Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the new river station, the central airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the central department store, the central bus station, the Palace of Pioneers, the park “Friendship of Peoples”, etc.

With the construction of the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, Ulyanovsk became one of the main tourist centers of the USSR, after Moscow and Leningrad. The city was not closed to foreigners, which distinguished it from many other industrial regional centers, but foreign tourists were not allowed to deviate from the route. On June 1, 1973, the 400,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. On April 16, 1982, the population of Ulyanovsk exceeded 500 thousand people.

On June 5, 1983, in Ulyanovsk, the river cruise ship “Alexander Suvorov” crashed into the railway bridge across the Volga (the Imperial Bridge). By mistake of the crew, the ship tried to pass under the non-navigable span of the bridge. As a result, more than 170 people died. The large number of casualties is explained by the fact that at the time of the collision, most of the passengers were in the movie theater and on the dance floor on the upper deck, which was completely destroyed by the collision with the bridge girder.

On July 17, 1987, the 600,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. The city’s tourist significance declined sharply after the collapse of the USSR. In 1998, Ulyanovsk celebrated its 350th anniversary.

In the 2000s, there was a discussion about the reverse renaming of the city to Simbirsk, but the residents of Ulyanovsk for the most part did not support this proposal. In 2009, the arches of the old railway bridge were replaced. On November 24, 2009, the Presidential Bridge across the Volga was opened, the second longest in Russia, with a length of about 6 kilometers.

Ulyanovsk - Features

From 1648 to 1780, the name of Ulyanovsk was Sinbirsk, and from 1780 to 1924 - Simbirsk. This name was given to the town by its founder, Bogdan Khitrovo, after the name of the settlement of Sinbir (named after the Bulgarian prince Sinbir), the remains of which were located nearby. In 1924, after the death of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk.

Ulyanovsk is located in a forest-steppe zone on the Volga Upland, on both banks of the Volga River (Kuybyshev Reservoir). The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in February is minus 10.4 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.2 degrees Celsius. A characteristic feature of Ulyanovsk is the constant winds blowing from the Volga.

This city is a major transport point, lying between central Russia and the Urals. Neighboring regional centers are three to five hours away by car. There are two international airports near the city - Ulyanovsk-Central (ULV) and Ulyanovsk-Vostochny (ULY).

The banks of the Volga in Ulyanovsk are connected by two bridges. The old railway bridge was officially opened in 1916 and was named “Imperial of His Majesty Nicholas II”. In 1917, it was renamed Freedom Bridge. In 2009, it again began to be called “Imperial Bridge”. The new bridge (also called “Presidential Bridge”) was commissioned on November 26, 2009.

Public transport is represented by trams, trolleybuses, buses, and minibuses. In Ulyanovsk tram lines are located exclusively in the right-bank part of the city and trolleybus lines are in the left-bank part. In the last years of the USSR, it was planned to build a subway in Ulyanovsk.

It is a multi-ethnic city. The ethnic composition according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census: Russians (77.65%), Tatars (12.64%), Chuvash (5.02%), Mordovians (1.4%). The economy of the city is based on the enterprises of the automotive industry, engine building, aircraft building, instrument making, machine building, and metalworking.

Ulyanovsk has a high potential for the development of the tourism industry. The tourist image of Ulyanovsk as “The Birthplace of Vladimir Lenin” is supplemented with some new ones now: “Russian provincial town of the 19th century”, “Homeland of Oblomov”, “Architectural Museum in the Open Air”.

The City Day of Ulyanovsk is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in September.
