SkiTour

Cool down a bit in the heat of the summer. Registrations for ČEZ SkiTour 2022 are open now!

After last year’s unusual season, we can’t wait for classic ČEZ SkiTour races. The 15 th season starts on 7 th January 2022. Choose now in the scorching heat from among eight winter races and start looking forward to the cool winter season on skiing trails!

The ČEZ SkiTour will start traditionally in Bedřichov with the popular night adventure of Bedřichov Night Light Marathon . The opening race of the series takes place on 7 th and 8 th January 2022. With stars above your head and a head torch on you will ski past places where a month later the 55 th ČEZ Jizerská 50 (11 th – 13 th February) will take place. The registrations ČEZ Jizerská 50 are also already open and race numbers are running out fast.

The second stop of this year’s ČEZ SkiTour is Zadovská 30 . The race in the middle of the beautiful Šumava National Park takes place on the weekend of 15 th and 16 th January. That is not the last January race of the SkiTour Master competition. On 22 nd to 23 rd January there will be the postponed premiere of Krušnohorská 30 and so for the first time you will get to see the unspoilt landscape of the Krušné Mountains as part of ČEZ SkiTour. For the final January weekend (28 th – 29 th January 2022) we’ll head for the foothills of the Beskydy together. Karlovská 50 will start in the picturesque environment of Velké Karlovice. The race is sometimes dubbed the “Valachian Marcialonga”.

You won’t take off your skis in February either as there are three more racing weekends on snow awaiting you. The first February stop is Deštné v Orlických horách, which hosts Orlický marathon on 5 th to 6 th February. The peak of the cross-country skiing season is the weekend from 11 th to 13 th February in Bedřichov, the hub of Nordic skiing, from where you will set out on the course of the legendary ČEZ Jizerská 50 . This year will see the fifty-fifth edition. February will close in Northern Moravia with the Jesenice skiing marathon called JeLyMan (26 th -27 th February 2022).

If the packed programme of the ČEZ SkiTour 2022 is not enough for you, don’t forget to visit our Polish neighbours and collect points for the overall ranking in Jakušice, which is sometimes called the Polish Bedřichov. The well-known race Bieg Piastów , which will take place between 4 th and 6 th March next year, is our series’ partner race.

Just like in previous years, at each race in the upcoming ČEZ SkiTour season you can choose courses of various lengths, various difficulty and skiing style. Everyone will have the chance to enjoy skiing -from kids, who will enjoy the Mini SkiTour races in classic technique for children up to 15, to the most experienced skiers. Set out on the track with your whole family, with friends or on your own and choose the race which best suits you.

You don’t have to pull out your skis just yet, but the chance to get a cheaper race fee and to secure your place on the starting line is here already. This way you will enjoy looking forward to the winter races in the unique atmosphere of magical Czech mountains even more! Register HERE .

Ski destinations in the Czech Republic

Skiing in the czech republic.

Compact and simple ski areas, affordable prices and good facilities: winter sports in the Czech Republic are ideal for children, beginners and price-conscious families. Most Czech ski resorts have around 30 kilometres of slopes and are therefore very orderly.

After a day of skiing, enjoy an affordable dinner in one of the pleasant restaurants on or at the bottom of the slopes or end the day with an extra hour of skiing on a romantically lit evening slope. Most of the winter sports areas in the Czech Republic are in the Giant Mountains and despite the low altitude, a skiing holiday in the Czech Republic is fairly guaranteed to have snow.

Travel by train

You may think that travelling by train to the Czech Republic takes too long. Or that you have to change trains too often. But it is very feasible! Travel time is about 11 hours and you can take either the day or night trains.

Let it Snow: Where to Ski and Snowboard in Czech Republic

Vanessa G.

The probably best thing that comes with the cold is the ski and snowboarding season. Even though Czech Republic’s mountains might not be as high as Switzerland’s or Austria’s, they are absolutely worth checking out – and an experience you should not miss out on if you are living in Prague.

Back home it all seems fairly easy: Renting, arranging the transport and the ticket to the mountain. In a foreign country, it is a littler harder to start with. But have no fear: With our guide on where to ski, rent and how to organise the trip to the mountains, you are ready for the snowy season in the Republic!

ski tour czechy

Where to Rent

Before you are headed off, let’s plan your ski trip right. While most of the regions offer ski rentals, we recommend getting your skis and snowboards in the city. Not only will that save you a buck , you also will not need to queue once you arrive at the mountain. Our favourite rental shop is ‘ Neklan Sport’ , located in Prague 10 . Simply hop on tram 13 or 22 and get off at ‘Čechovo náměstí’ . The shop is located right around the corner from the tram stop. The staff is very friendly and can speak English if your Czech skills are not so great yet. Neklan’s team will help you find the fitting pair of shoes and skis – and if you do not possess a helmet, goggles or gloves, you will surely find the right piece for sale or rent. Another great place to rent is ‘CZ SKI’ , located right off Nákladové Nádraží Žižkov tram stop.

ski tour czechy

Where to Ski

Now for the real thing! You got your snowboard, got your ski clothes and are ready to go. Even though Czech Republic is a rather flat country – especially for expats that are used to steep slopes – there are great spots to have some fun in the snow. All of these ski regions are accessible within 3 hours tops from Prague.

Located near Karlovy Vary – Northwest of Prague –  28 slopes and 29’350 meters of snow await you! With wonderfully prepared slopes in places like Bo ž i Dar (God’s gift), Jáchymov and Klinovec , the ski resort on the German border is bound to give you a great skiing experience in the Republic. The best thing? The region is not as crowded as others such as Špindlerův Mlýn, leaving enough space for everyone to enjoy their skiing day.

The longest and widest slope in the country – with 2’950 meters length and 100 meters width – is located in Jáchymov .

ski tour czechy

Freestyle and freeride fans can look forward to the Funpark as well as 2 kilometers of ungroomed ski slopes of natural snow (if the weather conditions allow it). The Funpark is home to the only FIS sized halfpipe – a beast of an obstacle!

If you get a multi day ski pass for Klinovec, this will also grant you access to the  neighboring ski area in Germany – Fichtelberg. Altogether, the two regions offer snow fans 34 kilometers of snow and fun . And in order to get to the different ski regions, the ski resort offer a free ski bus, so you can jump between the mountains for an excellent day in the snow.

For all those who prefer skiing in the dark, Klinovec has the optimal offer, too! From 4pm till 9pm , Night skiing is available. Do not forget to bring suitable accessories if you do the run in the darks! A special experience for all those who want the slopes – almost – to themselves.

The skiing region located in the Northeast of Czech Republic is a pretty decent resort, and the nature over there is absolutely breathtaking. The Jeseniky mountain region does not have that many resorts, but people refer to it as a tiny British Columbia ! On 1013 meters above sea level, one of the most famous downhill skiing resorts in Moravia arises.

Červenohorske sedlo is a rather small region to ski in. Offering 1 cable car and 8 ski lifts, it makes the perfect snow day in Czechia! Choose between terrains, up your slalom skills or go cross country skiing! There are trails for cross country skiers from   Červenohorský sedlo to both sides of Hrubý Jeseník .  The most sought-after route is the runs on the southern slopes of Velký Klínovec , the Švýcár and the Praděd area.

Season: 25th December – 19th March Transport: Cityski (from Brno) Price: CZK 700.00 Bus and Day Pass through Cityski / CZK 550.00 Day Pass at Cash Desk

Lipno Kramolin & Špíčák & Grosse Arber

If you are a pro skier looking for the perfect, steep and wide slopes, the Šumava region might not be for you. Lipno Kramolin ,  Špíčák and their German brother ‘ Grosse Arber ‘ are attracting people more so because of their absolutely stunning nature than for their ski slopes. Though the runs are groomed and well looked after, it is the utter wilderness, deep forests, lakes and rivers , that will take your breath away. A magical experience on skis in the South of the Republic!

Šumava is the most pristine region in Czech Republic and well sought after in summer for hikes. The untouched valley however turns into a true Winter Wonderland when the snowflakes hit its ground. Sunsets over Lipno lake are the most romantic thing we have ever seen. But beware: The beauty can be deceptive: The weather in the Šumava region can get quite rough, so be sure to check the weather forecast before you go.

Season: Špíčák and Lipno: November/December – March 2019 / Grosse Arber: 21st December 2018 – March 2019 Transport: Ceske drahy  Price: CZK 750.00 (Špíčák), CZK 350.00 (Lipno Kramolin), CZK 900.00 (Grosse Arber)

Across the Border: Hochficht

Ski in Austria, stay in Czech Republic! How that works? By visiting the ski resort ‘ Hochficht ‘, of course! The ski resort is located right next to the Austrian border, giving you and your friends the perfect opportunity to experience the Austrian snow, while paying Czech standard prices for your accommodation.

Hochficht offers ski sport enthusiasts over 20 kilometers of well-groomed slopes in varying difficulty. Whether you are a beginner or a pro, the ski resort in the Southwest has the perfect slopes for you. Thanks to its altitude (933 – 1338 meters), the ski region always gets heaps of quality snow .

If you are considering spending some snow time in Hochficht, you should definitely look into making a weekend trip out of it. Even though the area is quite  accessible by public transport , you might want to spend the 3 hours on the slopes and not in the train to get there. We therefore recommend spending the night in one of the many accommodation options on the Czech side of the Hochficht ( Nová Pec or Horni Planá , so you can make the most of the day pass you get at the cash desk.

The Hochficht region even offers skibus rides to and from the mountain from various stations. When picking your accommodation, make sure that your host includes a ski bus package – or that the house is located next to one of the stops .

Season: 15th December 2018 – 24th March 2019 Transport: Train to Nová Pec , Skibus Price: CZK 1’000.00 (Day Pass, hourly passes available)

Transport & Tickets for the Mountain

Found the right place to go and ski at but wonder how to get there? Companies like Cityski offer a perfect transport and ticket service. Simply find the region you would like to go to on their website, check bus departures and reserve your seat along with a ski ticket for the day online!

When the day of snow comes around, make sure you are going to be at the bus terminal early enough , for they can not wait for saunters! If you miss your bus, you miss the bus and you will not join the others on the slopes. So make sure you get yourself some coffee in a KeepCup and get up a few minutes earlier in order to enjoy the snow.

Billionaire presumed dead may be living in Moscow with younger woman: reports

A billionaire long believed to have died in a skiing accident may actually be alive and living with a younger woman in Moscow, new evidence has suggested.

Karl-Erivan Haub, then 58, vanished on a solo ski tour in the Alps on April 7, 2018. A six-day search yielded no sign of the businessman, and he was declared dead by a German court in 2021, according to the Seattle Times.

Now, however, the state prosecutor’s office in Cologne has opened a probe into allegations that Haub’s brother, Christian, provided false information when he said he had zero information indicating that his brother could still be alive, the Daily Beast explained.

The investigation followed a criminal complaint from journalists with the broadcaster RTL that were looking into Haub’s disappearance, the outlet said.

One of the journalists, investigative reporter Liv von Boetticher, told Capital magazine that she was aware of photos allegedly showing Haub in Moscow in 2021 – the same year he was legally declared dead.

“As far as I know, these photos were obtained on behalf of Christian Haub and two internal investigators working for him by an Israeli-American company that searched the biometric surveillance system in Moscow for images of Karl-Erivan Haub,” she explained.

The coincidence in appearance between Haub and the person in the images was about 90%, according to a Stern magazine report from March 2023 .

Based on her information, Boetticher explained, Christian Haub had access to the photos when “he stated under oath to the Cologne District Court in May 2021 that he had ‘no reliable evidence’ that his brother was still alive.”

Boetticher insisted that there is “strong evidence that [Karl-Erivan Haub] could have caused his disappearance intentionally and that at least parts of his family were aware of it and, against their better judgment, kept this secret from the Cologne District Court and the public.”

Haub – who was born to German parents in Tacoma, Washington, and educated in Switzerland – was married and had two adult children at the time of his disappearance.

The latest evidence, however, suggested that he may have a younger woman on the go in Russia, Boetticher told Capital.

“There was an alleged lover of Karl-Erivan Haub, with whom he had frequent telephone contact before his disappearance and who is in contact with the Russian domestic secret service FSB,” she said.

Haub vanished just one month after the death of his father, Erivan Haub. At the time of his death, the elder Haub was worth an estimated $6.4 billion, according to Forbes .

Boetticher indicated that the reason for Karl-Erivan Haub vanishing could be linked to the family’s business dealings.

“Our suspicion is that dealings with Russia or with Russian business partners may have put Karl-Erivan in trouble in the Western world,” the journalist suggested to Capital.

Christian Haub took over the Tengelmann Group as sole CEO shortly after his older brother disappeared.

His lawyer, Mark Binz, vehemently denied the journalists’ allegations in a comment to Zeit Online.

“Of course, there is no truth to the accusation,” Bonz scoffed. “Until a few weeks ago, the Cologne public prosecutor’s office saw it that way and therefore refused to start an investigation.”

Certares to Fuel FTI Tech Overhaul with Takeover, $130 Million Investment

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

April 16th, 2024 at 1:59 PM EDT

A leading travel and tourism investment firm acquires the third-largest tour operator in Europe.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

Certares , a travel and tourism investment firm, led a consortium that acquired FTI Group , the third-largest tour operator in Europe.

This deal ends a restructuring begun in September to strengthen FTI’s finances.

The consortium will own all of the share capital, and FTI will get about $130 million (€125 million) to funnel into its digital transformation and growth.

“Certares’ extensive industry experience and the new capital funding position FTI for exceptional growth,” said Karl Markgraf, CEO of the FTI Group.

Certares holds stakes in a range of travel companies like G Adventures, AmaWaterways and American Express Global Business Travel. The company and another private equity firm also own a majority stake in Hertz and it acquired several hotels in the last year. Certares founder and senior managing director Greg O’Hara became the chair of the World Travel & Tourism Council in November.

Munich-based FTI Group has 120 subsidiaries in German speaking markets, the Netherlands, UK, France, and other destinations.

The group had 6 million customers as of 2022, the latest figures available. The company has also signed a memorandum of understanding to be a launch partner with Saudi Arabia for increased multi-day tours in the Middle East.

Competitors to FTI include the giant TUI Group, DER Touristik, Kuoni, and Hotelplan.

Correction: This article has been updated to note that Certares owns a majority stake in Hertz with another private equity firm. An earlier version of this article also said that Certares owns a stake in Tripadvisor – its stake is in Liberty Tripadvisor.
