Writing for Rihanna, collaborating with Eminem; Skylar Grey is an incredibly talented songwriter and singer. Her voice is featured on many famous tracks, and those are what she is most well known for, so when I was given a ticket to go and see her with my friends I was a little apprehensive that it would not be the same watching her as a solo artist, rather than through her vocal samples or collaborations. Wow was I wrong. She can really sing, I mean, seriously sing. From mellow raspy soprano control, to a husky yet powerful belt, each note was pitched perfectly with her trills timed and executed flawlessly.

Something that I wasn't expecting, was her dedication to the performance from an audience interaction perspective. She was dancing around the stage, acknowledging the band, singing to them, and then started making her way towards the audience. She held out her hand during 'C'mon Let Me Ride', moving along the front couple of rows of audience, even stopping in her tracks to let them take pictures.

It was pretty cool as well, she played a solo version of her Grammy Award winning track 'Love the Way you Lie' written for Rihanna and Eminem, and Diddy-Dirty Money's 'I'm Coming Home', which she co-wrote. She also performed some original tracks that I hadn't heard before, but as you can imagine from her back catalogue of writing, they were fantastic songs. Most definitely a performance to check out if ever you get the chance. Really amazing.

SKYLAR GREY: Metamorphosis

Let’s hop right into this new self-titled LP, and your first in six long years — First things first, why such a long time coming?

I’ve really struggled through some major personal life changes over the past 5 years…I filed for divorce in 2017, which led to an additional lawsuit, and the stress and financial burden nearly killed me. Long story short, I was completely uninspired to make music. It was a dark time. But this past year, I was able to put it all behind me finally- I had to sell my catalog in order to afford the settlement, which hurt a lot- the majority of my earnings from my entire life’s work went to paying my ex and paying taxes…BUT the silver lining is that IT’S OVER, which is a huge relief, and now I’m more motived than ever now to make music and build a new catalog.

skylar grey tour 2022

And, secondly, how does this particular project either differ and / or compare to previous entries?

This is my first nearly fully self-written, self-produced, independent album. So there’s no producer or label to answer to…it’s just me! Which makes it’s highly personal and authentic compared to anything I’ve ever done before.

As a songwriter, when you sit down to pen your lyrics where do you draw your inspiration from?

Writing lyrics is like therapy to me. It’s my way of letting out all of my emotions. Sometimes it’s current emotions, and sometimes it’s analyzing the past…just like you do in therapy- you look back and try to figure out why you are the way you are, and remember moments that changed you…I do that same thing with songwriting.

Reflecting, tell me your whole inception into music — When did you become interested in it? And, how did it all begin for Holly Brook?

I’ve never known anything else…my mom says I basically popped out singing! She is a musician, and my dad’s a singer as well. So it’s just in my blood. I started doing gigs with my mom at age 6…age 14, I went “solo” and started going by Holly Brook, my first and middle name. Then moved to L.A. at 17, got my first record deal, had my first hit on the radio, then failed miserably. I started over at 23 with the name Skylar Grey, having written “Love The Way You Lie” (for) Eminem featuring Rihanna…which truly catapulted my career.

Now you’re a native of Mazomanie, Wisconsin, correct? So growing up in ‘Walking Iron,’ who all did / do you consider to be your strongest musical influences?

My mom was a huge influence and the music she exposed me to- a lot of Folk and Celtic stuff. She also taught me to play many instruments, like the guitar and lap dulcimer. I was also influenced by my dad’s barbershop quartet- their use of harmony was engrained in me at a very young age, so I have a deep love for complex chords and tension. Then as CD’s became a thing and my older sister started collecting them, I got SUPER influenced by Fiona Apple, Dido and Radiohead, to name a few. In having said that, how do you classify your overall sound and / or style?   Though not all the music I’ve put out reflects this- I make moody music. (There are some songs I’ve released that I HIGHLY regret!)

What particular string of events actually led to your initial linking up with Brad Delson and Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and ultimately inking with their Machine Shop Records imprint?

After moving to L.A., I met some producers who helped me make some demos…in the hallway of the studio, I met some random guy who introduced me to a lawyer, who then introduced me to my first manager. That manager got my demos into the hands of Linkin Park’s manager. Then I met with Brad Delano at a bar in a hotel where there was a piano- I sat down and played him a few songs. They offered me a deal the very next day.

You later went on to sign with Alex da Kid‘s KIDinaKORNER label — Walk me through this transition…

After having the hit “Where’d You Go” with Mike Shinoda, things went sideways for me…I was so young and naive, and made some major mistakes. Ended up parting ways with Machine Shop / Warner, but those negotiations took a long time. And during that time, I couldn’t legally release any music. It was the first real dark time in my career. I was broke, so I tried some odd jobs, then started playing back up keys for Duncan Sheik on tour…but I felt like such a failure. I eventually got so depressed and discouraged that I left L.A.. People told me not to leave L.A., that it was career suicide. But I think staying in L.A. I might have actually committed suicide. So I moved to Oregon- a cabin in the woods where I didn’t have to pay rent, just traded work. Being out in nature has always been super healing for me…I grew up in the woods, so being there was nostalgic. Reminded me of being a kid with big dreams, uncorrupted by the world. I went there as a lost soul, and over the course of a few months in isolation, without people forcing their opinions on me, I finally found myself again. I fell back in love with music, I found my confidence again, and in under a year I came out of that whole experience writing the biggest song in the world, “Love the Way You Lie.” So whoever says you NEED to live in L.A. to succeed in music is a fucking idiot, in my opinion.

As I mentioned, I went to the woods as a lost soul- it felt like I was living in a fog. I had no idea what was going to happen, where my future was heading…it was all grey. And the sky in Oregon reflected that emotion. But coming out of that experience on top of the world taught me to not fear the unknowns…but rather to embrace them. You can’t know what you’re capable of unless you push outside your comfort zone. So I named myself Skylar Grey as a reminder of the lessons I learned there.

Switching gears here…

To date, what has been your greatest career moment(s), at least thus far anyway?

I’m pretty sure I’ve already covered this in the above! However, I’d like to add that becoming independent now and making this self-made album is definitely one of the highest notes for me…it may not be my most “successful” career moment, but it’s spiritually the most fulfilling.

What’s an average day like for you?

Ha- I wake up to my cat licking my face, next to Elliott Taylor the love of my life. Then we make coffee and decide the agenda for the day- since I wear every hat in my career at the moment, currently that means going through emails, texts and calls, packing and shipping merch, creating content for marketing and promotion of my album, then diving into new music in the studio. Sometimes I can’t get to it all! Not enough hours in the day.

Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans…

My fans are amazing. I usually communicate with them through Instagram DM. Many of them have been following me since I went by Holly Brook, and it means so much that they’ve stuck with me so long. I like to let them know how much I appreciate them.

What is your favorite part about this line of work? Your least favorite? And, why?

Absolute favorite part is that moment in the studio when I create something that I feel is my best work yet. I’m always trying to one-up myself…and when I feel like I do, it’s a high I can’t explain. As for my least favorite part- it’s the “experts” in the game who think they know it all. Shut the fuck up- this is art- there are no rules, no blueprints to success, no such thing as knowing what a hit is. It’s all bullshit they invent to create value for themselves in the business. A lot of them are failed rockstars themselves, so they are bitter, and want to be important. I have learned that the best road to success is to make art YOU love and believe in. Then let these “experts” champion it if they love it. But if they don’t “get it” then ignore them- don’t let them change what you do.

What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Read the previous answer again!

Both as a writer as well as a feature you’ve collaborated with so many great artists; the list is endless, however, do you have a specific favorite either collaborator or collaboration? And if so, why?

Collaborating with Eminem is always a dream. On an artistic level as well as on an operational level. I love the blend of his style of rap with my moody vocals. And he’s so pro.

Also, do you have any memorable or even funny stories / anecdotes centered around the crafting of any of these chart topping singles?

When I wrote “Coming Home,” I was in New York working with Alex da Kid but my money from “Love the Way You Lie” hadn’t started coming in yet. So I slept on the couch in the UMPG offices that night- without permission! I remember the next morning when people started arriving to work, someone walked into the bathroom and caught me brushing my teeth!

Lastly, what’s next for you, SKYLAR?

I’m always focused on finding film / TV opportunities and collaborations, as well as always working on new material for myself. I promise it won’t be another 6 years before my next album drops!

Is there anything I left out, or just plain forgot to mention?

I think you covered a lot!!!!

Any “closing” thought(s) for our readers?

Thanks for reading!

ILLENIUM & Skylar Grey Release Long Awaited ‘From the Ashes’

ILLENIUM fans everywhere can rejoice as his highly anticipated track “From the Ashes” with Skylar Grey is finally here after almost a year of waiting and its getting us right in our feels. “From the Ashes” quickly became a fan favorite after ILLENIUM debuted it on his Fallen Embers tour in October 2021. The collaboration with Skylar Grey feels like a quintessential ILLENIUM song as his beautiful melodic sound design flows perfectly with her gorgeous vocals. The themes and lyrics in the song also fall in perfectly with ILLENIUM’s discography, so much so it wouldn’t be shocking if this is the title track for his new, upcoming album.

That’s right you read that correctly ILLENIUM has officially announced on twitter that it is almost new album time. Fans have been speculating his 5th studio album was coming soon as he announced with his TRILOGY: COLORADO show there will be a brand new live show for next year. ILLENIUM has also debuted a plethora of new singles across his sets since the release of Fallen Embers last July. Skylar Grey Had to Sell Her Song Catalog, Including Eminem and Rihanna’s ‘Love the Way You Lie,’ to Pay for Bitter Divorce

Skylar Grey

Skylar Grey ‘s co-signs and collaborators include Eminem and Rihanna (2010’s “Love The Way You Lie”), Diddy (“Coming Home”) and Dr. Dre (she contributed to 2011’s “I Need A Doctor” performance at the Grammys), and the singer and songwriter is herself a multiple Grammy nominee. Yet, for the last six years — since her last album, “Natural History” — she has all but retreated from public view.

During that time, Grey hit “rock bottom,” she tells Variety , suffering a divorce so bitter that she was forced to sell her catalog to pay her legal bills. She wasn’t happy about the sale, but Grey has moved on — now engaged, she has started the process of rebuilding her library with a new album, the intimate, self-titled “Skylar Grey” (released April 29).

Variety spoke with Grey about the tumult of the last few years, why she doesn’t want to tour anymore and her plans going forward.

You’ve had a lot of life upheaval since we last spoke.

Popular on Variety

I wasn’t really allowed to talk about everything that was going on because I was in a legal dispute, so I didn’t want any of that to bite me in the ass by saying something. So yeah, I just was keeping it private. But since 2017 I was going through a divorce and lawsuit, that was just wrecking me emotionally and financially. This past year, 2021, we finally resolved it, settled, I had to sell my catalog in order to afford the settlement, which was very sad in a way, because those songs like “Love The Way You Lie” and “Coming Home,” those are my babies. But at the same time, nobody can tell me I didn’t write those songs just ’cause I don’t own the rights to them anymore. I didn’t want to sell them, but it was my only way to put the past behind me…

So this wasn’t like what Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen did when they sold their recorded and publishing rights for hundreds of millions of dollars?

No. I wanted to keep building it and growing it. But, I have such a weight off of me now with the case being over, I’m not on the phone with lawyers every day, and I’m not having to pay all these legal bills anymore. Now I’m just focused on creating a new catalog and new money and new opportunities.

Have your feelings towards the songs changed at all after having had to sell them?

They’re still near and dear to my heart and yeah, I will always treasure them, but it’s different now. Every time one of those songs get used in a movie or whatever, I don’t see any of that money anymore. But unfortunately, the majority of what I got paid for my catalog went to taxes and my ex-husband. [ Laughs ] It’s like your life’s work, and then suddenly it’s like, “Okay, I’ve got to give the majority of this away.” But that was my only option. Luckily, I had the option of doing something like that, otherwise I may not have gotten out of the case.

After going through all of that, how much of this album was a catharsis for you?

The whole album is a cathartic release for me, it’s expressing a lot of emotions I felt over however many years it’s been. And it was hard, it was a lot of turmoil, depression, I was going through a lot of shit. So this album, I feel like reflects those emotions and the things that I was going through.

Was there one song early on that started this album?

The first song I wrote on the album was “Partly Cloudy With a Chance of Tears.” And I wrote it about that feeling of I’m putting on this facade, like this fake smile, because I can’t tell the world what I’m going through, so I’m pretending everything’s all good, but I’m on the verge of tears all the time. That was written in either the end of 2020 or the beginning of 2021, and that began the process. I feel like [with] that song, I found a vibe that I was really wanting to nail, and then I built from there.

When you’re forced to sell your catalog, it almost feels like the music is taken away from you; did that change your relationship with music at any point?

Yeah, a good portion of that time over the past six years, I was, like, “What’s the point?” I wasn’t feeling inspired; I was feeling really discouraged about my career, and simultaneously as that stuff was going on, I got dropped from Interscope, and I had a manager that dropped me as well, so I kind of hit rock bottom last year.

But once you hit rock bottom, there’s only one place to go —  up.

Exactly. And that’s why I made this album. It’s kind of like the transformation I made after hitting rock bottom, going through all these emotions and then coming out the other side feeling stronger than ever, which is where I’m at now. I guess it’s always darkest before the dawn.

It’s interesting that with your success, you were dropped by both Interscope and a manager. Did they give you a reason why?

The issue with Interscope, we actually had a very amicable split, which was not something you hear about all the time. At the time, I was making that EP Angel With Tattoos, which was inspired by my new love. And I was making that album with Aaron Bay-Schuck as my A&R, and then partly through the process, he left and went to Warner [Records]. So [after] that happened, I took my album into Interscope, met with the team, and basically — long story short — they were like, “Well, hip-hop is really the only thing that we’re focused on right now, so if you’re not gonna do hip-hop, it’s probably best we part ways.” So they let me take that music with me and I’m still friends with a lot of people over there.

And what happened with the manager?

The manager situation was interesting. I don’t necessarily want to talk about it, just ’cause I don’t like to throw people under the bus. Have you seen the Kanye West series [“Jeen-Yuhs”]? There’s something he goes through I really related to. This was early in his artist career when he was known for just being a producer, and he would go into these record companies and they would just kind of ignore his artist project because they only saw him as a producer. I feel like that’s kind of how I’m seen in the music industry, but as a songwriter. So I think with a lot of managers, they see me that way too. So they focus on wanting me to write songs for other people, that’s where I’ve made most of my money, so it makes sense. But, at the same time, I want a manager who believes in me as an artist, because being an artist is my real dream.

So it didn’t work out because of that. I just felt like we weren’t seeing eye to eye on that. [So] when I saw that Kanye thing, I was like, “Dude, that’s how I feel right now. I feel like everybody’s categorizing me as the songwriter, and I wanna be an artist.” And he was able to do it, he was able to prove himself and be successful as an artist, so I saw that in a moment where I needed reassurance that what I was doing was right, taking all matters into my own hands, managing myself and producing my own album. I’m doing my own merch, I’m selling my own merch and shipping, packing and shipping out of my house right now. I’m back at square one, but I really believe in what I’m doing.

Does it feel like starting over?

Yeah. I feel like I’m doing this grassroots style now. And I don’t know if I ever really did that before. When I first entered into the music industry in a real way, when I was 18 or 19, I went from making demos to getting signed in a year to having a hit song on the radio with Mike Shinoda, and there wasn’t a whole lot of grassroots build-up for anything that I did. Then I jumped around, writing hits and featuring on stuff for other people. But again, there wasn’t a ton of grassroots foundation built there. I feel like I’m doing that now. I’m going back in time and building this totally fan-driven foundation where I’m super in touch with my fans now — in a way I’ve never been before.

It’s been really eye-opening, and a big confidence booster for me, which is something that I needed as an artist. I have the confidence as a songwriter, but it’s not my passion. I don’t love doing writing sessions with other people, and I don’t love writing songs for other people.

What are your tour plans as a self-contained artist?

Everybody in the industry will combat me on this, but I don’t want to be on tour. I don’t enjoy being on the road. I enjoy the shows themselves, but every other aspect of it — the travel, being away from home — that kind of stuff I hate. And life is too short to wake up and do something you hate every day. So I really enjoy being in the studio. I really enjoy making music videos. And I’m kind of just designing my own career style. It doesn’t have to fit the mold of previous artists. So when it comes to shows, I have two ideas, other than if like the demand is there and I get somebody reaching out saying, “We need you to come here,” and they like make me an offer, then I would be open to doing like spot dates or a minimal tour, but my more interesting ideas are to do some type of a residency somewhere. Locally hopefully, like in a bar where I live. And if people want to come see me, they can come see me. So that’s one idea.

And the other idea is doing virtual tours where you wear the suit and like somebody designs this version of you and you can like actually be in the room with people, but virtually. I don’t know if anybody’s doing that yet. I feel like there’s been versions of it — like Travis Scott showing up in “Fortnite” — but holding my own concerts with people who can like join virtually, and I would love to do that, where I’m still singing live, everything’s happening live, I’m able to interact with people, but I’m doing it from the comfort of my own living room.

Without touring will you be writing more?

Grey: I’ve been focusing on finding cool movie opportunities for music, collaboration. I have some collaborations in the works, working on some video game stuff. I like to like do songs that it’s me singing, it is my song, but it’s like attached to a platform like a movie or something. So that’s kind of stuff I’ve been focusing on, as well as just being creative, making songs, putting ’em in a folder for a potential next album. I definitely don’t want to do is wait another six years to cut another album. My plan is to stay on a path of maybe an album a year. I have a little bit of a revengeful drive in me. They say, the best revenge is success, and so that’s definitely kicking in right now.
