Visiting St Pauls Cathedral FAQs

st paul's tour times

  • St Paul’s isn’t only a cathedral, it’s also an art gallery. There are artworks on display here from various periods – and there are more than mere paintings. These include a Henry Moore sculpture, modern art, Victorian mosaics and many more.
  • Nowadays, St Paul’s displays various art installations at the cathedral. Recent ones have included works by Angel of the North sculptor Antony Gormley and a Swarovski scientific collaboration.
  • The cathedral is also something of a movie star, and has also inspired various works. It’s been seen on screen in the Harry Potter films, Lawrence of Arabia , Sherlock Holmes and more. The church has also been reproduced by various artists throughout history within their works.
  • St Paul’s isn’t the original church to stand on this site. In fact it isn’t even the second or third, but rather the fourth. The one before was ruined by the Great Fire of London, and the current building is architect Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece.
  • The location was chosen because Ludgate Hill is the City of London’s highest point. Before London became as built-up as it is today, this meant the large church literally loomed over the city.
  • In fact Sir Christopher Wren was the first person to be buried at St Paul’s. He died in 1723, and his tomb is inscribed in Latin. ‘Lector, si monumentum requiris, circumspice’ translates as ‘If you seek my monument, look around you’.

st paul's tour times

  • The crypts at St Paul’s were also constructed for a reason other than housing the dead. The position close to the Thames meant the ground was marshy, so the crypts were built to hold up the structure. As well as to provide a final resting place.
  • The Whispering Gallery really does exactly what it claims to. At 30 feet (or 10 metres) above ground level, the walkway really does have the power to transmit even a whisper across the area under the dome. Why not see – or rather, hear – the magic for yourself when you visit?
  • St Paul’s has one of the world’s biggest domes, and is up there with the likes of the Pantheon in Rome. The dome is around 1,200 feet high – or 366 metres. You’ll have to ascend hundreds of stairs to reach the top, but can stop for a rest en route at the Whispering Gallery.
  • Martin Luther King once gave a sermon at St Paul’s Cathedral. This took place in 1964, four years before his assassination. There were over 3,000 people in the congregation. The famous Baptist minister and civil rights movement activist addressed the crowd with a sermon called Three Dimensions to a Complete Life
  • Being interred, celebrated or remembered at St Pauls is a great honour. A number of prominent British figures have been honoured here via a monument or funeral service. The list of luminaries includes wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill, whose funeral was held here. Poets William Blake and John Donne, trailblazing nurse Florence Nightingale and the man who discovered penicillin – Sir Alexander Fleming – are all interred at the cathedral.
  • Suffragettes fighting for women having the right to vote once plotted to blast the cathedral to smithereens. Fortunately the battery-powered bomb they planted in 1913 was faulty, so it was all to no avail. Equal rights to vote were introduced around 15 years later, in 1928.
  • St Paul’s was also bombed by the German Luftwaffe during the Blitz of the Second World War. Luckily the cathedral escaped relatively unscathed.

st paul's tour times

  • Typically the doors open at 8.30 am on these days, except for Wednesdays when they open a little later, at 10 am.
  • The last entry is usually at 4 pm.
  • Opening times can vary, especially when special services are planned. You can check the cathedral’s What’s On page to make sure it will be open when you visit.

st paul's tour times

  • St Paul’s is open to visitors daily, except for Sunday. It normally opens at 8.30 am, or 10 am on Wednesdays, with the last entry at 4 pm.
  • If you can, visit on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. You can also visit on Wednesdays but do bear in mind the later opening time. The cathedral is less busy before midday, so visit in the morning if you can.
  • Unless you have no choice, Fridays and Saturdays are best avoided. This is because these are the busiest days.
  • The summer season also tends to be busier. In the UK, summer school holidays take place between mid-July and early September. You can expect St Paul’s to be busy during this period. Tourists from other countries often visit the UK in summer for better weather, and European school holidays also take place at a similar time.

What to see at St Paul’s

Though it’s a notable landmark and an iconic part of the London skyline, there’s more to St Paul’s than its famous dome.

During a visit, people will typically explore the main cathedral area, discover the secrets of the crypt and scale the dome – via the Whispering Gallery.

As mentioned above, there’s a large collection of classic and contemporary art at St Paul’s. This spans various eras and genres. As you might expect, the artworks displayed here tend to have a spiritual theme.

Notable works include William Holman Hunt’s The Light of the World painting and the modern Henry Moore Mother and Child sculpture.

You can also attend services and special events at St Paul’s. By doing so you can see this London icon as a working cathedral. You can also hear the choir sing and listen to other musicians. Services are free to attend and are open to people of all beliefs.

Members of the public are also welcome to pray in St Dunstan’s chapel whenever it is open. You can find the current St Paul’s programme of services here , which includes those for morning prayer, Eucharist, Choral Evensong and more. Do note that some special events and services are ticketed.

If you are visiting St Pauls Cathedral why not include some other attractions located in the vicinity?

  • The Tower of London
  • Tower Bridge
  • Great Fire of London monument
  • HMS Belfast
  • Millenium Bridge
  • Tate Modern
  • Shakespeare’s Globe
  • Borough Market
  • The Clink Prison Museum
  • Buy tickets for St Paul’s in advance if you can. This means you can avoid queueing up – or waiting in line – to get in. It’s often very busy, especially on weekends and in summer.
  • Ideally, try to visit on a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday before noon. On these days you can usually enter the cathedral from 8.30 am.
  • Do allow extra time for the artworks if these interest you. They’re one of the hidden treasures of St Paul’s, which acts as a prominent gallery as well as a church.
  • If you can and want to, attend a church service at the cathedral free of charge. This will give you an insight into how the famous building works as a house of worship. Services are open to people of all faiths and beliefs, and you may get to hear the choir sing.
  • Wear decent footwear if you plan to scale the mighty dome. There are hundreds of steps to climb before reaching the top – though it is well worth the effort. Don’t forget to stop on the way up (or down) at the Whispering Gallery.
  • Oculus – or the ‘eye to St Paul’s’ – is capable of delivering a quick history lesson. Stop by if you want a whistle-stop tour of the cathedral’s past.
  • If you’re in the vicinity on a Sunday, you cannot enter the cathedral for sightseeing. But what you can do is hear the church bells ringing out across London’s rooftops. It’s music to the ears of locals and tourists alike.
  • There’s a City Thameslink station almost as close to St Paul’s as the tube station named after it. Walking from here only takes a minute or so longer than from the underground, and it may be more convenient depending on where you’re coming from.
  • An audio guide is included with your entry ticket and is available in a number of languages. By using this, you can take a self-guided tour of the cathedral.
  • The cathedral has a cafe and a gift shop. Ideal for taking a break, refuelling or picking up souvenirs of your time in London.

Finally, do check the What’s On calendar before you go. As a working church, opening times for sightseeing here can vary.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting St. Paul's Cathedral

St. paul's cathedral ultimate guide.

Its glowing blue dome can be seen for miles, and it’s also been a focal point for many important historical events in London; but once you tour the inside of St. Paul’s Cathedral, you’ll see why it has such an important place in London’s history.

Away from the ritz and glitz of London’s West End, St. Paul’s Cathedral and its surrounding streets feel as if they’ve been trapped in time. Not only is St. Paul’s perched on the highest point of the City of London, it’s also the second largest church building in the UK, and one of the oldest landmarks in London.

St. Paul’s Cathedral was built on the former location of a church, which had dated back to 604 AD. Legend has it that King Ethelbert of Kent built this wooden church in dedication to the apostle Paul, but the church suffered massive damage in two separate fires, as well as in The Great Fire of London in 1666. The Cathedral as it is seen today was built between 1675 and 1710, and was designed by architect Sir Christopher Wren (who was influenced by Michelangelo’s dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome).

Throughout its history, St. Paul’s has served as a key location for several important events in British history, such as the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles in 1981, and the funerals of Lord Nelson, Winston Churchill, the Duke of Wellington and Margaret Thatcher. It's no surprise that many guides consider this stunning church the highlight of any free tour in the City of London!

St. Paul's Cathedral Highlights

From chapels and monuments, to religious art, statues and galleries, it seems like every nook and cranny of St. Paul’s offers some kind of surprise or historical delight any visitor will appreciate. Make sure to visit the church after a free tour in the area so you can make the most of this wonderful landmark!

Upon entering, visitors will be greeted with the eight scenes of life of St. Paul (which were painted by Thornhill), as well as the Nave (the large, ceremonial and public space which also contains the Great West Door). At the northern section of the aisle stands the famous Duke of Wellington monument, as well as a group of statues representing valor, cowardice, truth and falsehood.

No visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral would be complete without walking up the 560 steps to the top of the Dome and the Whispering Gallery. This massive circular enclosure provides visitors with magnificent views of the interior of the Cathedral from up above, and it is said that even the slightest whisper can be heard throughout the cathedral thanks to the Gallery’s impressive acoustics.

If you have the stamina, you can also walk a further 117 steps to view the Stone Gallery, and another 166 steps for the Golden Gallery.

Another famous area inside St. Paul’s Cathedral would be the crypt, which is located on the bottom floor. Here you will see the final resting places of several notable people in London’s history, such as the tombs of The Duke of Wellington, Christopher Wren, and Admiral Nelson, just to name a few.

Visitors can also visit Oculus inside a theatre in the crypt, which provides visitors with a 270-degree film experience highlighting the extensive history of St. Paul’s Cathedral. During the film viewers will learn about everything from The Great Fire of London to the Blitz, as well as more information on the architectural design of the cathedral.

There are also several chapels located within St. Paul’s Cathedral such as the All Soul’s Chapel (dedicated to Field Marshal Lord Kitchener), and St Dunstan’s Chapel (which is reserved only for private prayer). There is also a chapel dedicated to St. Michael and St. George, the Middlesex Chapel, and the American Memorial Chapel (commemorating the 28,000 Americans who were killed in Britain during World War II).

St Paul’s Cathedral symbolizes peace, hope, and defiance, with the latter being very prevalent during World War II. The 1940s brought devastation to London, with many buildings being turned to ashes, with that many feared St Paul’s Cathedral would be one of them.

The Prime Minister during this time was Sir Winston Churchill and it’s said he woke every morning during the London Blitz asking “Is St Paul’s still there?”, he knew that with the morale of London hanging on by a thread, losing St Paul’s could be the final straw to the Londoners mental state. But with 1000’s volunteers watching over the building 24/7 St Paul’s survived and remains today a symbol of defiance.

Tour Of The Cathedral of Saint Paul:

After entering the main sanctuary through any of the Churches 12 wooden doors you are instantly struck by the 186 feet tall and 76 feet wide dome tower over seating for 4,000 people.  The  massive dome  is not only amazingly beautiful but was designed with the function to give everyone an unobstructed view of the pulpit.  We especially love the 24 large  stained glass windows  sitting on each side of the Cathedral letting in colorful light as electric lights weren’t added until 1940.  Making your way around the church you’ll find statues of the apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in each of the 4 corners.  You’ll also see massive bronze works and painting honor the life of St Paul, the namesake of the Cathedral.

Our favorite feature outside of the dome is the  Shrine of Nations  in the back of the Cathedral.  The Shrine is made up of 6 mini-chapels with statues honoring the Patron Saints of the main 6 European ethnic groups that first settled St Paul. The first mini-chapel has a statue St. Therese of Lisieux dedicated for the missionaries and it has an awesome plaque pointing out a stone from the castle of Rouen, France, where  Joan of Arc  was a prisoner in 1431.  The  Stations of the Cross  are posted on each of the round columns and tell the story of Jesus and the cross.

History of the Saint Paul Cathedral:

Catholic Churches in Saint Paul date back to the 1st chapel built out of log by Catholic priest Lucien Galtier near Lambert’s Landing ( Saint Paul Landing ).  This location along the Mississippi River where today’s Shepard & Robert Street meet was the true start of Downtown Saint Paul.  At the time, the young city was a collection of cabins known as Pig’s Eye ( after a saloon ) with competing development starting at Upper Landing near today’s Irvine Park.

Over the next few years, the city boomed and the congregation quickly grew which Saint Paul becoming the official name when it became the capital of the new Minnesota Territory in 1849.  With the growth, the church need to expand into the first Cathedral of Saint Paul under Archbishop Joseph Crétin in 1851.  Within a few more years, the growing church population of over 3,000 needed something bigger than their wooded buildings to worship in.   They decided to build a proper  3-story church out of stone in 1856 at the corner of St Peter and 6th Street East in Downtown Saint Paul ( today’s Landmark Plaza ).

The location of the new stone Church was good and centrally situated, but didn’t have the towering location over town many cities cathedrals had.  Most of the elevated land on the bluffs around St Paul was being bought up quickly by the rich and the Church missed its chance to buy in the first go around.  The best land was along Summit Avenue on Saint Anthony’s Hill including 40 acres bought by Ohio farmer Jeremiah W. Selby in 1849.

Shelby used the land to farm potatoes but paid a hefty price at $50 an acre when the land had recently only been $1 an acre.   Shelby was no dummy as he got rich quickly and was elected to the Minnesota Territory’s House of Representatives.  In 1854, one year after Shelby’s death, the road was named in his honor.

A large part of the Shelby land was bought by Norman Kittson Mansion who built a home in the Second Empire Style design with a French Mansard roof at the sight of the current Cathedral of Saint Paul.  Known as the Kittson Mansion , the home was considered Minnesota’s finest home when it was completed.  While a very popular and lavish style in its day, it may look a little creepy as a mix between the motel on Hitchcock’s thriller Psycho and the Addams Family Mansion ( Photos: 1 ; 2 ; 3 ).  Kittson was one of America’s first millionaires as a railroad baron, and later with steamboats, but also served as the Mayor of Saint Paul (1858-59).  He loved horseracing owning several tracks around the country, including a 64-stable Kittsondale raceway in Saint Paul’s Midtown near University & Snelling Avenues which he built for one million dollars.

In 1903  Archbishop John Ireland declared he would build a new grand Cathedral in Saint Paul and also The Church of Saint Mary in Minneapolis to replace the Church of the Immaculate Conception.  Looking back it was a pretty bold move to replace both of the cities’ major churches at the same time.  Ireland had served as a Chaplin during the Civil War before coming to Saint Paul where he was known for being very progressive in immigration and education although he was strongly outspoken against saloons.  He gained a lot of favor through education and even helped found Saint Paul’s Univerisity of Saint Thomas among many other schools.  From his time in the Civil War, he became friends with both Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt, and became a hard-line Republican in a time when Irish Catholics were very Democrat.

Ireland began his push to build his two grand Churches by finding the perfect architect before he even had any land secured.  Local architect  Cass Gilbert  twice turned down the designing of the Churches because he was busy in NYC, but he referred his friend Frenchman  Emmanuel Masqueray  whom he recently worked with at the 1904 Saint Louis World’s Fair.  For World’s Fair, Masqueray had produced the expo’s central building in a Beaux-Arts style with a main portal similar to that of the French Catedral de Périgueux.  The only surviving building from the 1904 World’s Fair is Cass Gilbert’s Art Building ( now the Saint Louis Art Museum ) as most of Masqueray’s were temporary buildings.  Temporary or not, his work gained him Cass Gilbert’s respect and ultimately the job of designing his first church for John Ireland in 9104, Minneapolis’ Church of Saint Mary.

Ireland got lucky with the land for Saint Mary’s Church in Minneapolis as Mr. L. S. Donaldson, who was an Immaculate Conception parish member, donated $45,000 of land next to Loring Park for the church in 1905.  Construction from 1907-1915 with the 1st mass in 1914 and in 1926 Pope Pius XI raised Saint Mary’s to become the 1st Basilica in the United States .

When it came down to the Cathedral of Saint Paul Ireland was confused and turned down the chance to buy land on Saint Anthony’s Hill for build near Midway instead.  Luckily he re-thought the deal and came back to the current Cathedral location and former Shelby farm in 1904 for $52,000.  The construction was fast-tracked in 1906 when John Cochran who live next door and opposed the Cathedral died.  Cochran had a huge distaste for Ireland, not because he was Protestant, but because Ireland converted his daughter to Catholicism against his wishes.  Ireland was able to acquire the land from Cochran’s wife and it now serves as the Church parking lot.

By 1907 they were ready to lay the cornerstone on the Cathedral of Saint Paul and it’s said that as many as 60,000 people attended.  The 1st service was on Palm Sunday in 1915 even though the inside wasn’t all the way done yet, but was still attended by 7,500.  The designer died in 1917 with most of the work done but only 3 of the interior chapels done. Ireland died the next year and it wasn’t until the 1950s that the final projects were actually finished. Cathedral finally concentrated in 1958.   In 2009 the Vatican declared the Cathedral the National Shrine of the Apostle Paul.

There are a few things you will find helpful to know ahead of your visit.

While it is free to  attend a service , to experience all of St. Paul's glory, including its  historic galleries, tombs, and domes , you must buy tickets.

They sell tickets on site at St. Pauls. Included in your ticket is admission, an introductory talk, an audio tour, a multimedia tour, and a guided tour (limited availability).

You can also purchase admission online well in advance, though they rarely sell out. You shouldn't have trouble dropping in whenever you have the time.

If you're wondering how to get tickets that include everything, make sure to read our post covering St. Paul's Cathedral Tickets . It includes details about how to save up to 50% off admission.

St. Paul's does not require visitors to follow a strict dress code, so you can wear pretty much whatever you want (within reason).

Just keep in mind that this is a church and moderate dress is expected, even if it isn't required.

ATTEND A SERVICE AT ST. PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

As a house of worship, St. Paul’s Cathedral holds daily services.

For those who wish to use the church for worship purposes, there is no fee to enter, providing guests arrive in time for the service.

Attending service at St. Paul’s means you will not be allowed to explore the building, tombs, memorials, and domes.

These areas are blocked off during hours of worship.

However, you will get to sit inside the church and enjoy its majesty, size, and beauty, all whilst taking in services steeped in centuries of historic tradition.

St. Paul's Cathedral Mass Times

  • Daily Services | 8:00, 8:30, 12:30 and 17:00
  • Sunday Services | 8:00, 10:00, 11:15, 15:00, and 17:30
  • View the up-to-date schedule here

TIP: The weekday and Saturday 17:00 services, and the Sunday 15:00 service, contain the Choral Evensong. It is performed by the exquisite boys' and gentlemen's choirs.

THE BUILDING OF ST. PAUL'S

Built by England's most famous architect, Christopher Wren, in the Baroque style, St. Paul’s origins lie centuries ago.

There have been multiple St. Paul’s churches on the site where the current cathedral stands today.

Wren’s version began shortly after the Great Fire of London burned the Medieval St. Paul’s to the ground in 1666.

Backed by King Charles II, it took Wren over 9 years just to design the church and then only around 33 years to build it (which is amazing when you consider all the modern tools and equipment Wren didn’t have!).

St. Paul’s was consecrated in 1708 and at that point, it was the tallest building in London – holding that title until 1962!

TIPS FROM LOCALS AND TRAVELERS

While we do our best to provide all the information you'll need to plan a successful visit to St. Paul's Cathedral, sometimes you need answers to specific questions related to your personal experience.

As mentioned above, our London Travel Tips Facebook group is a great place to ask a question.

Below are some questions asked and answered by our members as well as other tips that will make the trip most enjoyable.

  • St. Paul's is not particularly packed throughout the year, but it does tend to get crowded on Fridays and Saturdays. It's also likely to be more quiet closer to opening times.

st paul's tour times

2. For those interested in attending a service, one of our members suggests an arrival time and the best place to sit.

st paul's tour times

3. For those touring the cathedral, there are a few ways to go about it as the comment below states.

Also, note that the last entry for sightseeing ends 30 minutes after the last entry time. Be sure the check the opening and closing times on a particular day as the schedule does sometimes change.

st paul's tour times

4. Bells ring at the Cathedral before Sunday services at 9:30, 10:45, and 14:30.

There are also tower bells that ring at 8:00, 8:30, 12:30, and 17.00 during weekdays.

The schedule will change though if the service times following have to be moved.

5. Bags above a certain size, 45cm x 30cm x 25cm, cannot be taken into the cathedral. There's no place to store coats or bags so you'll have to carry things with you.

6. Non-flash photography is welcome in most parts of the complex but it is not allowed in the Whispering Gallery or St. Dunstan's Chapel.

The cathedral also doesn't allow tripods, selfie sticks, and other equipment. It's best to check the website if you have any questions.

7. You can find the toilet facilities down in the crypt.

For even more tips and information, don't forget to read our post on what to see inside St. Paul's Cathedral .

Time to tour Saint Pauls Cathedral

How much time do you need to tour Saint Paul's Cathedral? With a trip to the top.

Rick's London book says 2 hours if you climb the dome, 1 hour if you don't.

there is a lot of detail to see in St Pauls (and Westminster Abbey etc), if English history interests you you could spend many more hours looking at all the inscriptions etc.

I would honestly give yourself a few hours minimum whane seeing St Pauls or Westminster Abbey. We thought htat this would be a good fast visit through St Pauls. The lower level tombs didn't take much time to see, however, the dome? Your breath is taken away and you can just sit in the chairs under it and enjoy the serenity and think. The audio tour is well worth the time and price for the details . Climbing to the top is in stages and it is not easy to just sprint up the spirals. Try to take in the construction details, the iron works , the sound traveling along the walls and of course the views. After acsending to the top and returning to the basement, we chose to rest for a bit and enjoy some snacks and drinks to catch our breath and plan out the next adventure. Westmintser Abbey is the same thing. The history and details to be seen can't be appreciated in a fast stroll. The nice thing about the location is that after you leave, one can walk across the Millenium Bridge to enjoy the Thames, see the Tate Modern, Globe Theater or catch a cruise boat. We planned our day to start off leaving the Hotel by taking a doubel decker bus to the center and walking to St Pauls. Later, we would walk across the Millenium Bridge. The afternoon was based on us seeing Macbeth at the Globe Theater at @ PM. Tremendous performance! We had a leasurely lunch at a nice place down the walk overlooking the Thames. Walking back to the Globe we found that the Tate Modern had free admission and enjoyed that for about a half hour seeing [INVALID] works that interested us. There were plenty of people on the lawn and on the walk enjoying the day as we walked a few minutes to the Globe Theater. After the performance we had the 99p cone from the Ice Cream Truck. There is a dock right there to catch any of the Thames river cruises and that led us to enjoy the late afternoon travelling to the Tower Bridge, turning around and ending up at the Millenium Wheel. Enjoy the history.

My rule of thumb is to plan one major site in the morning and one in the afternoon................................... I keep notes on other sites/activities in the area, if I find myself with extra time available......................................It seems more likely that getting to, through and out of a site takes longer than you expected and you find yourself rushing to keep up with your plan.

Thanks for all of the advice.

My cousin is a guide on Thursdays - ask for Viv. She does a 2 hour tour but the trip to the top is not included. Amazing building. So plan 3 hours.

We make it a habit to see every big cathedral that is nearby. Having seen so many, I couldn't imagine spending more than an hour touring one on the main floor. If you are new to the experience, by all means spend more time. However, the climb to the top between the two layers of the dome is my favorite part. Add an hour for that experience & if you are physically able don't even consider passing it up....

Rebecca Goldstein says hello from the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament.

A mountaineer dressed in heavy winter gear ascends the snowy peaks of Mount Everest from the south side.

By Deb Amlen

Jump to: Tricky Clues

FRIDAY PUZZLE — The 46th American Crossword Puzzle Tournament will be held this weekend in Stamford, Conn. Even though the live tournament is full, solvers can participate in a virtual tournament.

If you would like to attend next year, the signup at the link above usually opens in January. And remember: You, too, can look this happy and relaxed while solving puzzles in front of a gigantic timer.

Rebecca Goldstein says in her notes that she will be at the tournament, and she has left us a terrific puzzle to solve while she’s away. It was a challenge for me, but I’m glad I solved it: Her grid is packed with sparkling fill, and I learned something new from it.

Tricky Clues

6A. I solved BANC through the crossings because the word was not familiar to me as a “Chaise alternative.”

20A. “It might make a cameo” is not a reference to a brief appearance in a film. “It” is ONYX, a stone that is used to carve cameo brooches.

30A. Today I learned about SILENT DISCO s, and they are exactly what they sound like: A group of partygoers wearing wireless headphones dance to music of their or a D.J.’s choosing. The advantage is that an event can be held at almost any location and it won’t bother the people nearby with loud music.

33A. “Head of St. Paul’s Cathedral?” seems like an interesting way to clue LOO, the slang Briticism for toilet, but it does offer a solving lesson. Head, another slang word for commode, can mean the chief of something. But in crosswords, it is sometimes used to misdirect solvers. St. Paul’s Cathedral in London is included in the clue to indicate that the word is one that is used in England. For those who are curious, I can confirm that St. Paul’s does indeed have LOOs .

37A. I loved this clue when I finally solved it. I couldn’t imagine what the three-letter “Word shouted before ‘Feliz año nuevo!’” — that’s “Happy New Year,” in Spanish — could be. (Hint: It’s not “olé!”) If you are counting down in Spanish, the last word you say is UNO, or one.

59A. This “Crash pad?” is not a mat used to cushion blows or falls. To “crash” is to fall asleep, and a BED is the perfect place to do that.

1D. OLGA Merediz is the actress who reprised her role of Abuela Claudia “in the 2021 film adaptation of ‘In the Heights.’”

2D. The “High point?” of the day is NOON, when the sun is highest in the sky.

4D. OK, I’ll admit it: I laughed, because I am 12 years old, and I am choosing to view this as a tushy joke rather than a reference to trains. The answer to “They bring up the rear” is CABOOSES.

5D. Think carefully: Is the clue “Volleyball doubles?” asking you about the sport or the word “volleyball” itself? In this puzzle, it’s the latter. The answer is ELS because there are two pairs (or doubles) of Ls in the word.

8D. “Policy in a restaurant that pays a living wage, perhaps” is NO TIP, which I admired as a way to raise awareness about how servers in some restaurants are not paid enough to survive, and about how tips are unreliable. An alternative is to pay servers wages they can live on, and customers can keep the tip money in their own pockets.

38D. The “Drs. with good gut instincts?” are GIS, or gastroenterologists, who care for the gut. The abbreviation “Drs.” is an indicator that the answer will be abbreviated.

51D. Maybe the “Bird that makes the longest migration in the animal kingdom” did so because they took the wrong TERN. I’m sorry — I’ll see myself out.

  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

StarTribune

After years of uncertainty, grand old day is making a repeat appearance in 2024.

Grand Old Day just might be back for good.

After a three-year hiatus that had many believing St. Paul's unofficial start of summer might never return, the festival will be back for a second year in a row in 2024. Thanks in part to the tutelage of the St. Paul Area Chamber of Commerce and a new crop of sponsors and volunteer leaders, Grand Old Day will commence on Sunday, June 2.

"Yes, we had a successful event last year and we built off of that for this year," said Chris Jensen, president of the Grand Avenue Business Association (GABA) and co-chair of Grand Old Day. "We were fortunate to hire the chamber's Workstream team, and they have been essential as kind of our back of house, and make sure we're keeping everything on track, and you know, meeting our timelines for everything."

Also for the second year in a row, radio station 89.3 the Current will be curating the festival's musical offerings on six stages. Jensen said officials are "hoping to add one or two more" stages before the event. Yam Haus will be the main musical act, Jensen said.

New this year: pro wrestling at the U.S. Bank Stage near Lexington Parkway.

Started in 1973 to breathe life and excitement into what had become a sleepy and by some accounts seedy stretch of Grand Avenue, Grand Old Day over the decades may have been taken for granted by St. Paulites. Hundreds of thousands of eventgoers will do that, officials said.

Then suddenly, Grand Old Day was seemingly killed off. In 2019 the festival was dogged by budget and organizational woes, followed by rising security costs following the civil unrest after the 2020 murder of George Floyd. Organizers who hoped to resurrect the event were frustrated by continual obstacles.

Then a crew from the chamber jumped in to help recruit sponsors, and GABA decided to give it another go in 2023. A committee of about a dozen enthusiasts met for months to rebuild the festival's infrastructure. Jensen said an estimated 200,000 people attended Grand Old Day last year.

Officials said they are on solid enough footing this year to ensure the event will be held. However, they're still seeking interested sponsors willing to join their efforts. Potential sponsors should contact the Grand Avenue Business Association via email at [email protected], or go to the event website at grandave.com.

Because of construction, the festival footprint will be a half-mile shorter, running from Dale Street to Snelling Avenue.

Megan Ryan, vice president of marketing and communications for the chamber, said officials there stepped in because the event has become synonymous with St. Paul.

"People love Grand Old Day. And we — I — have been a part of it as long as I can remember," she said. "We're proud to be a part of helping it come back and our Workstream team aims to help build capacity at organizations. I think this is a great example of helping GABA do what its mission is designed for and bring back attention to Grand Avenue."

Peter Kenefick, the longtime owner of Dixie's On Grand who redeveloped the restaurant's space into the Kenton House on Grand, a massive new luxury apartment complex at Grand and St. Albans, said he's encouraged by the event's new energy.

"I think the leadership that's there, between the Grand Avenue Business Association and the Summit Hill Association, is very, very strong. And I think they're committed," said Kenefick, who will be grand marshal for this year's Grand Old Day parade. "We are way ahead of where we were a year ago. Sponsorship seems good. We've worked very closely with the city and the police and they are on board. And so I think it is going to be back to great."

Bundle Up Over Easter Weekend As Saints Kick Off 2024 Season With Two-Game Series March 30-31

ST. PAUL, MN (March 29, 2024) - And away we go. There’s nothing like baseball in March in Minnesota. Of course, this is the first time the St. Paul Saints will play a home game in the month of March. It’s the shortest homestand of the season, and got even shorter with the cancelation of the March 29 game, and we have you covered from head-to-toe, or at least from head to waist. While Mother Nature may have erased the original opener, these two promotions are to dye for. The Saints kick off their 75 home games with three right off the bat from March 29-31.

Saturday, March 30 vs. Columbus Clippers, 2:07 p.m. – Saints Black and Blue Hoodie (2,000) presented by CHS

There is nothing like the pomp and circumstance of Opening Day of the baseball season. The bunting, the pageantry, the All-Star style lineups. Hope springs eternal as everyone starts the season with the promise of a championship. The Saints finished 2023 with the third best record in the International League at 84-64. They finished with the best overall record in the West Division which got them absolutely nothing (don’t ask, it’s still a sore subject). Two weeks ago, we thought our giveaway would get balled up immediately, thrown into a closet, and not get used until the fall. This is Minnesota, however, where winter is never over until June. Get in line early because the first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a blue and black Saints hoodie presented by CHS. There is only one way to make sure you feel warm on what could be a frigid afternoon and that’s with our Treasure Island Saturday.

Sunday, March 31 vs. Columbus Clippers, 2:07 p.m. – Easter Day Celebration with Eggstra Bunny Scavenger Hunt

The legend of the Easter Bunny dates back hundreds of years to Germany. More than 1.5 million Cadbury Cream eggs are produced every day. And the world’s most expensive Easter Egg was sold for more than $11,000,000 at Christie’s in London in 2007. Learn all about quirky Easter facts as we enjoy the day with family, food, and fun for the kids. It’s Easter Sunday at CHS Field. Enjoy some amazing brunch specials, watch the kids race around the ballpark trying to find all our eggs with special prizes in them, and bring the entire family out and spend an afternoon with us. Easter is the perfect day for a Cub Family Sunday.

As we say in the baseball world, it’s a marathon and not a sprint. We’re shaking off all the cobwebs and bringing the heat. We treat everyday like it’s Opening Day. The first two games of the season are here, and the warm summer months are just around the corner. Bring friends, family, and anyone else you can think of out to CHS Field because we’re all about the fun.

Saints tickets continue to be a tremendous value. Tickets range in price from $5-$35. Friday home games with Post-Game Fireworks are an additional $3 per ticket. Post-Game Blazeworks Supershow on June 8 and Post-Game Fireworks Supershows (July 3, July 4, and September 21) are an additional $4 per ticket. Tickets purchased on the day of the game are an additional $2 per ticket. Children under the age of 12 and seniors 65 and older receive $1 off the admission price. Children under 2 that don't require a seat are free.
