Tour Down Under stage 5 - Live coverage

Don't miss all the action from the final stage to Mount Lofty

Tour Down Under Stage 5 Profile

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of finale stage 5 of the Tour Down Under to Mount Lofty!

We're just moments away from the final stage of the Santos Tour Down Under. What a week it's been, and it's not over yet. Today's stage is the final chance for the GC riders to make their mark.

Luke Plapp (Ineos Grenadiers) could be among those chasing the stage victory to try and make a mark. The Australian champion said before the stage:

"Hopefully I’ll have a bit of a loose leash and can go up the road and try and have some fun tomorrow. I was out of the GC race after Corkscrew so it would be nice if I could go up the road tomorrow and get a result but we will look at how close the GC is and obviously the climbers will still want to go at us. I think it will be quite an aggressive day. I think definitely Jayco want to have something from this tour and they want to win it so I’m expecting them to take it up to UAE for sure and hopefully us boys can make something happen with Ethan and if I can show the Aussie jersey and be up there that would be awesome.”

The official start may not have been signaled yet, but already fans are staking their claim on the roadside plots up Mount Lofty and cyclists making their way up on the closed roads.

We're still riding through the neutral zone before Stuart O'Grady drops the flag at KM 0.

We're about just four minutes away from the start of the final stage.

The key feature is that they're climbing Mt Lofty five times today. So it's expected to see lots of GC attacks earlier in the race.

The race leader, Jay Vine, has 15 seconds on his challengers. It's going be a hard day for him to police the peloton and manage the onslaught.

We're approaching the turn where the neutral section will end. Soon racing will be underway.

And we're off and racing! The course starts on an incline, and Honore is pulling hard at the front, working to protect his KOM jersey, (even though this climb isn't part of the KOM). He'll be looking to get into whatever break gets up the road.

There was a small group of 10 that snuck away, but that didn't last long.

The attacks have settled down for now, but the pace is still high.

More attacks have started. This time it's Lluis Mas for Movistar who is having a stab. Victor Lafay is going as well.

Taj Jones, who had that hard crash yesterday, is drifting off the back of the peloton. Looks like he may be a DNF today with the fresh injuries impacting him.

And it's back together in the peloton now.

We're through the finish for the first time and on the descent now. Movistar has been active since the start of the race and continues to keep the tempo high.

There's 100km to go, and the next lap will have KOM points on offer.

A small group of four is off the front that contains Michael Matthews. No time gap yet.

Matthews looking for the points jersey with the intermediate sprint. And he does get the max points across the line.

After the intermediate sprint, a group of 12 has formed off the front, but the peloton is still unsettled.

A big group of about 13 rider has 20 seconds. The best rider on GC is Chris Hamilton, who is over five minutes back.

This is a good break for Jay Vine so they might actually be allowed to stay away. Depends on how bad Education First feel the threat is to Mikkel Honore's KOM jersey.

Luis Leon Sanchez is trying to cross to the break for Astana with 4km to go the top of the climb.

The gap is down to 15 seconds for the large group up the road.

Mount Lofty is a relatively short climb at 1.5km, but it averages 6.8 percent. They'll climb this five times.

But the gap is growing again as it looks like the chase from EF Education has stalled.

Johan Jacobs, Matthew Dinham, Chris Hamilton were 1, 2, and 3 over KOM point.

Hepburn, Lapeira, Brustenga, Bidard, Lafay, Gaze, Swift, Roosen, Jacobs, Hamilton, Dinham, Haller and Le Berre are the riders off the front. They have about 40 seconds on the peloton.

The break includes two Team DSM riders, Chris Hamilton and new signing Matt Dinham who spoke to Cyclingnews on the sidelines of yesterday’s stage, where he foreshadowed that stage 5 would be an opportunity for the duo:

“I have felt really good on the climbs so far and obviously Chris Hamilton has been climbing really well so far so I think we should have a good crack at tomorrow's stage and see what we can do,” Dinham said.

Hamilton may be a familiar face on the WorldTour, but it's the opening race with the team for 22-year-old Dinham, who also has those mountain bike handling skills to help him through the descents.

Bahrain is on front of peloton at the moment. Pello Bilbao in third on GC, so they might be trying to launch him across to the break.

The break has 51 seconds, but the peloton isn't easing off of this.

We're inside the final 60km of this year's tour. The gap to the 13 up the road is down to 30 seconds. The peloton isn't giving this group much of anything.

Bahrain Victorious is really doing some damage to the peloton in anticipation of Bilbao perhaps attacking later on in the race. He's 15 seconds away from the ochre jersey. Also, there are 10 bonus seconds at the finish line.

The riders are heading through the feed zone and filling up their pockets with snacks and bottle cages with bidons.

Jay Vine's UAE team has a big task today to keep his 15 second lead safe.

The leaders are heading down the descent toward the second intermediate sprint at Uraidla.

One of the riders to watch out for is Ben O'Connor (AG2R Citroën):

“Sunday is going to be really more down my alley because it is hard all day, really lumpy roads and I think the teams and us can make the race hard, create some more seconds to make sure you can definitely be in the top ten but hopefully can be in the top 5."

We're only 35km away from home, and the aggressiveness in the peloton has skyrocketed. The gap is just 20 seconds.

We're inside 30km to go, and the peloton is finally catching the 13 off the front.

The peloton is at the base of Mt. Lofty for the penultimate time.

The attacks are flying out of the peloton again. Imanol Erviti from Movistar is having a go, but everything has been marked so far.

Max Schachmann has been on the attack several times with less than 20km to go.

A group of eight has 15 seconds on the peloton.

Matteo Cattaneo has accelerated out of the front group.

A look at the earlier break today.

Tour Down under

Cattaneo is off the front with a small gap. He has about 10km to go!

Cattaneo has been reabsorbed and now Ewen Costiou ( Team Arkea) attacks.

Rutsch is giving it another go after yesterday's time in the break.

More attacks from the front group as the peloton bears down on them.

It's going to come back together as they head up a little climb that takes them from Algate to Stirling.

The ochre jersey of Jay Vine is in a great position as they start climbing again.

Yates and Bilbao are marking each other closely.

Just 5km to go in the Tour Down Under!

There are about 30-40 riders left in the main bunch. Nans Peters is attacking.

Ah, that was an attempt to get closer to his team leader, Ben O'Connor.

Team DSM is moving up to the front of the peloton with 4km to go.

But Rohan Dennis is the one driving the pace at the front. It will be hard to attack with his engine setting a hard tempo.

Jayco is now at the front with 2.5km to go.

There's been a crash at the back of the peloton. Sean Quinn is involved.

Yates finally launches an attack. Immediately Vine responds.

Ben O'Connor has also gone with Yates. Bilbao hasn't been seen yet.

The trio has opened up a gap of about 10 seconds. And Yates attacks from the front again.

He can't shake O'Connor and Vine. They'll go into the finish together for a sprint.

O'Connor is leading it out. Yates is at the back.

Vine winds it up, but Yates pips him on the line for the stage win.

Jay Vine (UAE Emirates) has won the 2023 Santos Tour Down Under!

Simon Yates won the final stage of the Tour Down Under ahead of overall winner Jay Vine.

Tour Down Under

After a week of racing in the Adelaide Hills, Jay Vine (UAE) is the overall winner. Mikkel Honore (EF Education Easypost) takes home the king of the mountains jersey, Michael Matthews (Jayco-Alula) wins the sprint jersey and Magnus Sheffield (INEOS) is the best young rider.

Here is the moment Jay Vine is crowned the winner of the Tour Down Under.

Young Brit dons Willunga crown, setting up thrilling last day of Tour Down Under

Young Brit dons Willunga crown, setting up thrilling last day of Tour Down Under

Willunga Hill has a new champion. Oscar Onley conquered Tour Down Under's penultimate stage, out-sprinting a small group that arrived together at Willunga's summit.

The young Brit leading a Dutch team displayed patience and the leg speed needed to survive the final climb and last kilometre.

Onley (DSM-Firmenich PostNL) made sure he was first into a final sweeping left hand corner, edging out Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech), whilst crucially opening up a five-second gap to Jhonatan Narvaez (Ineos-Grenadiers) and race leader Isaac Del Toro (UAE-Emirates).

Historically the final ascent of Willunga whittles down the contenders, creating ample time gaps that shape the general classification but today there was no separating Onley and Williams.

stage 5 tour down under results

Incredibly, the pair will head into tomorrow's final stage on the same time but Williams thanks to his third place on stage 2 will wear the ochre leader's jersey tomorrow.

Despite missing out on the leader's jersey today, Onley believes his team got the tactics right with a day still to play out.

"I came here with quite high expectations, and I guess, obviously coming to every race wanting to win, but I really felt like I had a good shot if I played it right," Onley said.

"I really have to credit the team over the winter who have kind of like helped me with this kind of tactical game because I think in the past maybe I've had the legs to get better results, but I've not been tactically so smart."

Onley, at just 21 years old, continued this year's theme of youthful success, following on from 19-year-old Mexican sensation Isaac Del Toro.

But Australian teammate and Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL Road Captain Chris Hamilton isn't surprised by the young Brit's performance.

After racing with Onley for the first time back in October 2022, he recalls Onley went toe to toe with Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard.

"So, from there, I think he opened and he raised a few eyebrows he's just been chipping away and, developing slowly," said Hamilton.

"And he always had a massive engine, but it just takes a bit of time to find out how and when to use it, and he's worked it out.

"He's been a massive talent ever since you know, he came through the DSM development team".

Despite being pipped at the line, Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) was praised by his road Captain Simon Clarke for not only today's brilliant ride on the slopes of Willunga but for being vigilant for bonus seconds from the first stage.

"You haven't seen us chasing bonus seconds all week for no reason," Clarke said.

"And this is exactly why. So, I think we wouldn't be in this situation if we hadn't been chasing those seconds.

"We just got to keep doing what we've been doing and execute another plan tomorrow like we did today, and we should be in with a good chance".

Tomorrow's 128km stage will host a battle for ochre jersey which will not be exclusive between Williams and Onley,

With the top-10 is only separated by 25 seconds, tomorrow's 128km and final stage of this year's Tour Down Under will not be an exclusive battle between Williams and Onley.

2023 TOUR DOWN UNDER STAGE 5 RESULTS

stage 5 tour down under results

Australia’s Jay Vine claimed his first World Tour victory in the Tour Down Under on Sunday, with Britain’s Simon Yates winning a thrilling uphill battle to take the race’s final stage. Yates (Team Jayco-AlUla) gave one final lung-busting effort to overtake Vine at the Mount Lofty finish for his first-ever victory in Australia, denying Vine from winning a stage at this year’s TDU. Vine (UAE Team Emirates) capped an outstanding week after keeping close to his only serious rival for the ochre leader’s jersey in the hard slog up to the finish, sealing his win in the final general classification. Vine won the World Tour TDU at his first attempt and continued his rise to prominence in world professional cycling after winning two stages at the Vuelta a Espana last year.

“It’s incredible to stand here wearing this winner’s jersey,” Vine said.

“And the way we drove that was first-class, the team were incredible with their support all week, and I am so happy to be able to finish it off today. It’s so satisfying.”

Vine described a “hectic” race, where the team “had to be on our toes all day”.

Yates, the 2018 Vuelta a Espana winner, rolled the dice with 1.7km to go, and Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroen Team) and Vine tacked on the end of the three-man breakaway in the dash to the finish. Yates was forced to do all the work with one kilometre left and made another concerted effort to get away before Vine set sail for the stage win, only to be collared near the line by the dogged Englishman. Yates said his team had come to the race “with a lot of ambition”.

“We didn’t walk away with the overall, but we can be really happy with the stage.

“Second overall was the best I could do, today was our last chance and we took it… Jay Vine is a massive talent and I’m sure that won’t be the last we see of him.”

Yates pulled back four seconds on Vine in the final stage to finish 11 seconds behind overall, with Spain’s Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) third on 27 seconds. American Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) finished in the lead bunch to secure fourth overall, 57 seconds down, and came away from a consistent week as the winner of the Young Rider’s jersey classification.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

He was making his UCI World Tour debut for UAE Emirates and now the 27-year-old reigning national time trial champion joins Australian cycling legends Richie Porte, Rohan Dennis, Simon Gerrans, Allan Davis, Pat Jonker, Cam Meyer and new race director Stuart O’Grady atop the podium. Vine was humbled by the victory on home soil after Porte claimed the 2020 edition of the race before Covid forced a two-year postponement of the Tour Down Under.

“It was tough out there and it was chaotic for (the final) two laps (towards Mount Lofty),” Vine said. “We settled into the rhythm and the boys kept me safe and did an amazing job. I think it’s special to join a new team and it’s also my first (WorldTour) General Classification in my own country. The last guy to win this event, Richie Porte, is an idol of mine and to be standing here, it’s special in my career.”

Vine’s overall victory never appeared to be under any threat throughout Stage 5.

Santos Tour Down Under: The race as it happened.

15.3km – Ziptrak Sprint 1 Greenhill Road, Uraidla Jumbo Visma’s Rohan Dennis – the 2015 Santos Tour Down Under winner and 2023 stage winner – attacked as soon as race director Stuart O’Grady dropped the flag 9.3km after the Unley start.

Luke Plapp (Ineos Grenadiers) and Matteo Cattaneo (Soudal-Quickstep) joined Dennis before the peloton swooped on the opportunists. Ziptrak sprint jersey leader Michael Matthews (Jayco AlULa) made it across the line first to add more points to his early season 2023 WorldTour tally. Michael Gogl (Alpecin Deceuninck) and Australia’s Reuben Thompson (Groupama-FDJ) finished second and third respectively to claim points and bonus seconds. Matthews has 61 General Classification points at that stage of the race, 14 points ahead of Caleb Ewan from the Australian national team.

33.6km – efex King of the Mountain, Mount Lofty Road, Mount Lofty (Category 1) Distance: 1.3km – Average gradient: 7.3km The first King of the Mountain (KOM) of the day was more of a reconnaissance for the serious General Classification contenders. Race leader Jay Vine (UAE Emirates) was in the second peloton well protected by his teammates. It was the first of four times under the KOM Mount Lofty arch before the Tour Down Under was about to crown a new king. Swiss Johan Jacobs (Movistar) earned 10 points, Australia’s Matthew Denham (DSM), was handed six points for second place and Lucas Hamilton (Jayco AlUla) jagged four points. Dane Mikkel Honore (EF Education-Easypost) was still in command with the efex KOM leader’s jersey, a point ahead of Vine and six points clear of Simon Yates (Jayco AlUla) at that stage of the race.

67km – Ziptrak Sprint 2 Greenhill Road, Uraidla The counterattacks prevailed but never appeared to frustrate the front of the peloton or Vine. Jayco AlUla’s Michael Hepburn earned maximum sprint points and time bonuses which was a good sign for his teammate and GC points leader Matthews. Australia’s reigning national road champion Luke Plapp (Ineos Grenadiers) was first to cross the line before the final lap saw a jumpy peloton chase down attacks. The Italian Cattaneo, 32, was powered away opening a 33 second gap to the main peloton when a solo victory appeared to be on the cards. The Italian who finished second in his home country’s national time trial championship last year was brought back by the chase group with 10.7km before the Mount Lofty summit.

tdu23 st5

85.3km – efex King of the Mountain, Mount Lofty Road, Mount Lofty (Category 1) Distance: 1.3km – Average gradient: 7.3km Mikkel Honore secured the efex King of the Mountain (KOM) jersey for the 2023 edition of the race despite not challenging the KOM for points. Germany’s Kim Heiduk (Ineos Grenadiers) took the main points as the peloton started winding up for a chaotic finish.

112.5km – Race Finish – Mount Lofty Road, Mount Lofty Jayco AlUla lit up the race just before the final lap towards Mount Lofty. Simon Yates handed Australia’s only UCI World Tour team its first stage victory of the new year in the grand finale of the Santos Tour Down Under season at Mount Lofty. The Englishman claimed the Schwalbe Stage 5 Unley to Mount Lofty after a stunning bunch sprint finish, which saw Yates, and Australians, General Classification leader Vine and Ben O’Connor (AG2r Citroen) turn it on for fans as the finish line approached. Yates’ grand finale saw him finish just 11 seconds behind Vine, with Stage 3 winner Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious) on the podium in third place, 27 seconds adrift of the new Santos Tour Down Under champion.

[WINNER – 2023 SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER] Jay VINE, UAE Team Emirates: Did this race go perfectly for you? I wouldn’t say perfectly but yeah, it was pretty good. I’m a big fan of Alain Prost from Formula One and his philosophy was take the risk when you can and when you have the opportunity go all in. That’s how I basically rode the race. So not getting greedy and going for stage wins when I could take as much time as possible. That’s why it was a lot easier on the boys today, because we had the 15 second buffer over the other two. It took him to four world championships, it’s taken me to a Tour Down Under win.

How do you reflect on the last couple of years and where you are now? Well, I guess it’s good that I didn’t get a start in this race, because now I get to say that I won the race on debut. I don’t know if it says anything about selections for the Australian National Team. But I’m super happy to be where I am right now.

But just now you’ve come through winning the Zwift Academy, you’ve just gone from strength to strength. How are you feeling about life? It’s incredible. I think my wife promised me a Corvette last year after the Volta wins. So now I’ve got a Bentley probably coming, So it looks like we’ve got some traveling to do around Europe.

Do you feel like you’ve well and truly arrived now in professional cycling? I’m pretty happy with how my career’s going. If I’d come second, this race, that would have been a massive thing for my career as it was, but taking it step by step, and I’ve got plenty more races still ago this year. I think we’re only on day seven or something or day nine of racing in Australia for January. So one more race at Cadel’s, and then the European season starts.

What are all your success this week? Was there any particular lesson that you learned from this race that you didn’t know beforehand that’s going to help you? I wouldn’t say there’s anything that I learned, but I definitely have full faith in the team. This is a team sport at the end of the day, I’m standing here, but without those six other guys that rode around with me for this last six days, I couldn’t be standing here. Plus, the support staff around us. I think we’ve got seven, maybe eight staff over here which is more than we have riders. Without them, you know, the show doesn’t go and I’m not here.

Especially the last couple of days, you had a huge target on your back. How stressful was it? But you know, and what was your confidence that you would be standing here at the end of the overall champion? Yeah, it’s pretty naive of me to say that I had I didn’t have a target on my back but to really feel like I had a target on my back. We’re just going about doing the usual thing that the team does. They want to go to France, they’ve won Torino twice, UAE twice, so many races. Their confidence is inspiring knowing that they’ve done all this before so they can certainly get a mug like me in my debut to get around this course. . You rode like a man on a mission – are you trying to make up for lost time? I wouldn’t say I’m making up last time. My wife keeps telling me. I really want to get to the next thing, the next thing the next thing but as she keeps telling me just enjoy the moment like you like riding your bike, and that’s what de stressed me a lot this week. I really enjoyed yesterday, really enjoyed today, as much as it was, okay, particular kilometres down, but it’s just fun riding my bike and racing, that was really proper good fun.

Have you found the people embrace the Santos Tour Down Under, being back to three years away, seems like everyone here is just happy that it’s back. Yeah, I think everyone’s really stoked it’s back because I was really worried that when COVID hits that it wasn’t going to get the funding. We’ve seen a bunch of races in the States go out of business but bike racing in this country has supposedly a lot of money for it so it’s really, really good that we’ve still got a World Tour stage race going on down under.

[2ND PLACE – 2023 SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER & SCHWALBE STAGE 5 WINNER] Simon YATES, Team Jayco Alula: Simon, you normally play your cards close to your chest. But we heard a fair bit of emotion from you when you’re going across the line then. We came here to the Santos Tour Down Under with a lot of ambition. I mean, we’re the only Australian WorldTour Team. Obviously I’m British but I back the Aussies. We put a lot into it and of course we didn’t walk away with the overall victory but we’re really happy with the stage there.

To have guys like Michael MATTHEWS and Luke DURBRIDGE doing so much work at the bottom of the climb, that full team commitment must be rewarding. The team has been fantastic all week, not just for me, but earlier for Michael MATTHEWS doing all the Ziptrak intermediates sprints. Like I said, we put a lot into this race.

Your thoughts on second overall? I think that’s the best I could do. I mean, the only thing I could change was the efex Prologue in the rain. A lot of a lot of guys also got caught up in that as well. I did the best I could there. From there we just tried to take the race as it came. Today was our last chance so we took it.

tdu23mst5

[3RD PLACE – 2023 SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER] Pello BILBAO, Team Bahrain Victorious: Third overall. What was the strategy throughout the day and particularly the last few kilometres? We [believed] that also today it was possible to win the stage and maybe the GC was a possibility and everyone wants to fight for it. But then the second last climb I felt like my legs were not super. I turned to the guys that were continuing riding in a certain way but maybe if they could find another way to [fight the] stage it was okay with me. Nikias ARNDT thrived in a small group. In the end, I just did the last climb thinking of the podium trying to pull in the back group just because I couldn’t go for more.

You made the podium this year. Can we have you back next year to try and get the top step? Yeah, why not? I really enjoyed this race. I think the race organizers made a super interesting route. Challenging stages, great show. Different for everybody. No, I think it’s difficult to ask for a good race just in six stages so it’s a nice race maybe next year I can come back.

[ZWIFT YOUNG RIDER CLASSIFCATION WINNER] Magnus SHEFFIELD, INEOS Grenadiers: It’s been an eventful trip in Australia and you go home with the Zwift Young Rider’s Jersey white, it must be satisfying? Yeah, I came out here with really big ambitions. I was second in the prologue and then I was able to fight through the crash this entire week. I think I can be really happy with the work with the team, but also just my own performance as well.

So you met your ambitions? Yeah, I would love to have come home with the win but I still have one more race before we head back to Europe, and it’s gonna be a long season. I can be really happy with how I kicked off this season to 2023 and I really hope I can continue with this momentum.

[EFEX KING OF THE MOUNTAIN CLASSIFICATION WINNER] Mikkel HONORE, EF Education-Easypost: Everybody likes the pink jersey but you decided to change it from a polka dot one It’s super nice but the efex King of the Mountain Jeresey it’s even more special. How rewarding was it midway through the race knowing you’d sealed the efex King of the Mountain Classification. Amazing. To be honest, I was still a bit in doubt because it was so hectic out there. I didn’t want to be too sure about winning it and try to do the calculations, so I focused on the race and for the final stretch.

[ZIPTRAK SPRINT CLASSIFICATION WINNER] Michael MATTHEWS, Team Jayco AlUla: My plan for the day was to obviously take that first intermediate sprint and secure the jersey and then see how my legs were through the day. My legs were really had enough for today and I saw the opportunity that I could help the other boys to try and deliver the victory. Simon YATES has been in great shape this week and it’s just awesome to be a part of a team win like this.

What’s it like then tuning into race radio and listening for the result? I couldn’t actually hear anything man. Luke DURBRIDGE actually stopped at some tent to watch on the TV. Then I just had the whole tent explode. That’s where I found out that Simon YATES actually won. But I think with the radios we have here we they were too far up the road so I couldn’t actually hear anything but I watched it live and it gave me the rundown.

Tour Down Under 2023 Route stage 5: Unley - Mount Lofty

The route climbs from the gun. After leaving from the inner-south suburb of Unley the riders and travel up the old freeway. This is still the neutral section, and it climbs all the way to the notorious Devil’s Elbow. That’s where the start flag waves.

After turning left on the Mount Lofty Summit Road the riders race four passes of a 25 kilometres loop through the Adelaide Hills, connecting Summertown, Uraidla, Carey Gully, Bridgewater, Aldgate, Stirling and Crafers. KOM points are available in the finish passage at kilometre 33.6 and at kilometre 85.3.

Mount Lofty begins just after moving through Aldgate. This way, the climb adds up to 7.6 kilometres, but according to the race officials the climb is only 1.3 kilometres long and averages 7.3%. If you start to count after Aldgate the average gradient falls to 3.3%. The steepest part – 13.3% – sits in the final kilometre.

The Tour Down Under never before finished at Mount Lofty.

Two intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds each, while the first three riders one the line take time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
