'Star Trek: Picard' Season 3: Michael Dorn & Michelle Hurd on How the Final Season Feels Like a Movie

Dorn also discusses how filming the action in 'Picard' compares to 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' & 'Deep Space Nine.'

Before Star Trek: Picard Season 3 premieres on Paramount+ on February 16, Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke with returning stars, Michael Dorn , who was first introduced as Worf in Star Trek: The Next Generation , and Michelle Hurd , whose character Raffi Musiker originated in the first season of Picard . During their interview, Dorn discusses how filming action scenes in Picard compares to Star Trek: The Next Generation , how much time they spent with stunt rehearsals, how Picard Season 3 has a cinematic feel to it, and their character arcs.

Though the first two seasons of Picard were disappointing to some fans, Hurd calls Season 3 an “action-packed” “epic adventure,” with Patrick Stewart returning to the helm as the titular Jean-Luc Picard in a high-stakes mystery. The Next Generation ’s Gates McFadden also reprises her role as Dr. Beverly Crusher, as does Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, Brent Spiner as Lore, and Star Trek: Voyager ’s Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine from previous Picard seasons.

This season isn’t just about bringing back familiar faces, the show is also introducing fans to new talent, including Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut and Mica Burton as Sidney and Alandra La Forge and Amanda Plummer as the villainous Vadic. Others joining the fray are Todd Stashwick ( 12 Monkeys ) as Captain Shaw of the USS Titan, and new series regular and associate of Beverly Crusher, Ed Speleers ( Outlander ).

Check our conversation with Dorn and Hurd in the player above, or read the full transcript below. For even more on Star Trek: Picard , you can read Maggie Lovitt 's review calling it “the start of something new and exciting.”

COLLIDER: I want to start with – Michael, this is for you – [ Star Trek: Next Generation ] and [ Star Trek: Deep Space Nine ] are two of my all-time favorite shows. I want to thank you for all the hours you spent in that makeup chair to play Worf.

MICHAEL DORN: It was my pleasure.

I really want to start with congratulations. I've seen the first six episodes of Picard Season 3, they're fantastic. Fans are gonna absolutely love them. For both of you, what do you want to tease the fans about what's coming this season?

MICHELLE HURD: What do we tease? It's gonna be an epic adventure, action-packed for our story. What do you want to tease?

DORN: It is truly an arc – and I always loved arcs, and shows where it starts one place and ends up another place. We don't know where it's going. We hope it's a happy ending, but we don't know. That's the thing is that our characters are going to go through an arc, and I've always found that interesting, and I think the fans will too.

HURD: Well said.

Yeah, it's interesting because when Next Generation was on there was no season-long storyline. There were minor things. I want to talk about the action a little bit. I'm curious, how much time did you actually have before stepping on set to do some of your action scenes together where you could rehearse? I'm also curious, Michael, you've done action is Worf before. How did it compare now to years ago? Did you have more time now, less time?

DORN: More time. There was more time. I mean, we literally were there on days that we weren't working going through the scene. Because, the scenes on Next Generation were fairly short, and even on DS9 , were fairly short and very concise, but these were very long and involved and they were central to the story. So you couldn't really go, “Okay, just go over there and throw a dagger,” you know?

So, we had days where we would be – there was maybe one or two days where I was in makeup, but the rest of the time we were there, we were in our shorts and everything.

HURD: And that was our first time meeting, was doing stunt rehearsal. So we hadn't even done a scene together and that was how we first met.

DORN: And it was cool because there was…These stunt guys were just–

HURD: They’re amazing.

DORN: And I was kind of going, “Well, we'll see…” And then they showed a scene where I go in there, and there's my reveal, and I watched their preview and I went, “Oh my God.” So that was… It's quite different. Like I said, this was a movie. They shot it, not like a movie, but it feels like it was a movie. So you had time to really work on these scenes.

The season is 10 episodes. Which was your favorite of the 10, and why?

DORN: I haven't seen all 10.

HURD: Yeah, we haven't seen them all. You've seen more than we have.

DORN: I think I've seen five.

HURD: Yeah, I think we're five. Right?

DORN: But I have not I have not seen all of them yet. I know there were a couple of scenes that I really enjoyed doing with Michelle. There's a couple that are really, you know, lovely.

I was just going to say, I think 6 is fantastic, but it just keeps building right at the beginning. Michael, this is for you. What did it mean to play Worf again for the first time, I believe, in like 20 years? Did you ever think it was going to happen again?

DORN: No, no, I did not. I had an inkling it might when JJ Abrams was doing his Star Trek’s, because after our last movie it was dead. I mean, Paramount sold off all the Star Trek stuff, and they were done with it. And JJ came and said, “Look, I want to do a Star Trek,” and they went, “Okay.” But like we've said a bunch of times, you never say never anymore. But I looked at my watch the other day and it's been 35 years since I started.

HURD: Wow! That's impressive.

Michelle Hurd Talks ‘Star Trek: Legacy’ Hopes & Ponders ‘SVU’ Return

Michelle Hurd for 'Star Trek: Picard'

While Paramount+ has recently said goodbye to one Star Trek  series ( Picard ) and will be to another this year ( Discovery ), there are other projects coming — and one that fans and stars hope joins that list. So, of course, when TV Insider caught up with  Picard ‘s Michelle Hurd on the red carpet for Law & Order: SVU ‘s 25th season celebration — she left the NBC drama in its second season — we had to ask about possibly seeing her as Raffi again.

“I love Raffi. She’s my favorite character,” Hurd shared. “We have hands, fingers, everything’s crossed for Star Trek: Legacy . I know that right now they’re working on Section 31 for Michelle Yeoh . And then they’re going to do Starfleet Academy . That’s going to be a series. And then if the fans still want it, they’ll start working on Star Trek: Legacy .” (And if you’d love to see Hurd and Yeoh team up in the world of Star Trek , you’re not the only one: “Wouldn’t that be phenomenal?” Hurd said. “I need to make a phone call.”)

There had been talk of  Section 31 (as a series) for quite some time before what is now going to be a movie was officially greenlit in April 2023. In the movie, Emperor Philippa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past. And it was just before that, in March 2023, that Paramount+ ordered  Starfleet Academy to series . It will follow the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy.  Star Trek: Legacy is, right now, just a hope, of another series to continue telling the stories of the characters after Picard , but there’s nothing in development.

Hurd is also open to reprising her  SVU role, Monique Jeffries. “I would love to, obviously,” she told us. “I’m assuming that every actor that graces the stages of Law & Order would like to visit again. And it was my first series regular out of college. I feel like whenever I see pictures, I’m like, ‘Oh my God, that’s baby Michelle.’ And as an artist, I’d love to come back just because I’ve matured and you want to revisit a role and see what you can do and bring to life. Plus, I’d love to see where Jeffries would be, and it would be great to see she’s like a Supreme Court justice, or she’s a judge, or she’s a DA.”

But since she loves playing perfectly imperfect characters, she’s also up to seeing that Jeffries “stumbled — just as long as we can see her stumble and succeed,” Hurd explained. “Because I’m also very conscious of the fact that I’m a woman of color and I’ve tried very hard to make choices in my career to represent women of color in a strong, empowering way, to let all the little brown and Black kids that are looking for representation see something on the screen and go, ‘Hey, I can do that. She’s doing it. I can do that.’ So I hope it would be something that it would be empowering so I can continue this journey that I’m trying to do of living a legacy of women of color.”

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Actress Michelle Hurd Hopes WGA and Studios Reach ‘Speedy Agreement’ in New Talks

Hurd tells TheWrap she hopes SAG-AFTRA will quickly follow “and we’ll all get back to creating the stories that we all love”

star trek michelle hurd

Now that negotiations between the WGA and AMPTP have resumed , one of the many questions that immediately follow is if and when the same will happen for SAG-AFTRA. Well, the actors guild’s Los Angeles VP and “Star Trek: Picard” star Michelle Hurd has “hope” that it will be soon.

Appearing at FanExpo Chicago on Saturday, Hurd explained to TheWrap that, at the end of the day, WGA needs to reach a deal before SAG even has a chance to consider things, so any movement is exciting.

“The bottom line is that we can’t go back into negotiations until they come to an agreement with the WGA,” Hurd said. “So this makes it, you know, as long as there’s actual true good faith bargaining happening, then that path to us getting back is closer, because they’re at that table.”

Michelle Hurd

She continued, “And I’m the daughter of some civil rights activists. And my parents always say that you have to have hope. Because if you don’t have hope, there’s no tomorrow. So I have hope that we will come that they’re going to come to a speedy agreement, and that we are going to be next up.”

As far as exactly how long it’ll take for SAG to get their turn though, Hurd couldn’t say at this point. She does have a theory — but she would love to be wrong.

“You know, their playbook was they waited three months to get back to the table to the WGA,” Hurd explained. “On Monday, we’ll be in our first month of striking. So there’s a possibility that they might wait three months to get back to the table with us.”

WGA AMPTP Guild talks start

She added, “But as I said, I have hope that it won’t take three months; that we’ll be back in the table, you know, negotiating soon, and we’ll all get back to creating the stories that we all love.”

Star Trek's Michelle Hurd Has A Black Belt And Wasn't Afraid To Use It In Picard

Star Trek: Picard Raffi

One of the mandates laid out by actor Patrick Stewart prior to the shooting of "Star Trek: Picard" was that the new Trek series not be a reunion special. He didn't want to return to "Star Trek" after 15 years (his last appearance as Jean-Luc Picard was in "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002) just to participate in an insufferably teary series wherein the cast of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" tiresomely get back on the bridge of the Enterprise-D and re-do everything they had done on the celebrated 1987 series. By the time the third season of "Picard" rolled around, the series resoundingly broke that mandate.

In the show's first two seasons, however, the showrunners had to innovate. Picard was no longer a starship captain, and his closest allies were not an official Starfleet crew. Indeed, the main characters on "Picard" were all free agents, with most of them actively resentful of Starfleet. Picard had to solve several dark mysteries with a rogue Starfleet cyberneticist (Alison Pill), a private starship captain (Santiago Cabrera), a Romulan ronin (Evan Evagora), a violent bounty hunter (Jeri Ryan), an ex-spy housekeeper (Orla Brady), and a former officer and recovering drug addict (Michelle Hurd).

The last of that group was Raffaella "Raffi" Musiker, a bitter figure who still clung to shreds of idealism. She was bitter and affable by turns, struggling through her solitude, her former addiction, and the fact that her adult son hated her. She was also a woman of action, ready to fight and do violence at a moment's notice. Although everyone on "Picard" commits murder eventually.

It seems that Hurd has always performed her own fight scenes, as she revealed, in a 2022 interview with TrekMovie , that she has black belt training she loves to display.

What Gates McFadden said

When talking to TrekMovie, Hurd recalled an incident during the press tour for the third season of "Picard" wherein she feared she might have given away too many plot points that hadn't aired yet. She also indicated that she has been doing her own on-screen fighting for years. Hurd had previously appeared in the "Daredevil" TV series , "Ash vs. Evil Dead," the 2001 version of "The Fugitive," and the lesser-seen 1997 "Justice League" TV pilot (she played Fire). She's had plenty of opportunities for stunts. She said:

"Not only on 'Star Trek,' but in general, I enjoy doing my own stunts. I'm a black belt in martial arts, and I love stunt stuff. And you know, at a certain point you won't be able to do it anymore, so I do them as much as I can. So I pretty much do all my stunts."

"Martial arts" is a little vague, and sadly Hurd did not elucidate which martial arts she was trained in. Back in 2013, however, Hurd was interviewed by the Baltimore Sun about her appearance in the crime drama "The Glades," and she was a little more explicit about her training and her interest in staying fit.

Raffi'll kick your butt

It seems that Hurd has always been keen on fitness, and not just for kicking butt. She also noted that she trained in both karate and judo. Karate, is more about sparring and fighting, whereas judo is about grappling, throwing, and pinning; it's an organized sport. As she said:

"Because I have this concept that your body is your temple. You want to go along in life and do all these things and adventures and have a great time, you need to respect your temple. I do everything I can to ensure everything inside and outside is as healthy as possible. I've been an athlete since I was a child. I did track and field for the Police Athletic League, then martial arts — first judo then karate. I've always been athletic. And exercise brings so much calm. I get into a zone. I would probably go crazy if I didn't work out."

Indeed, it seems that part of her martial arts training was getting a washboard abdomen. She explained:

"My abs are always a conversation topic. Got those at 16 when doing martial arts. My sensei made us do millions of situps and tons of core work. I developed those stomach muscles and they just stayed there. You have different ab muscles: upper, middle, lower, and both of your obliques. There are specific exercises for each one. I might go to spin and then do a 10- to 15-minute ab workout afterward."

Hurd's most recent credit is for an episode of "The Walking Dead: Dead City." No doubt she also got to kick some ass on that show as well.

Picard's Michelle Hurd on Star Trek's Legacy and Where Raffi Could Go Next

As she heads to st-sf: trek to san francisco, the actress discusses why star trek is so important..

Picard's Michelle Hurd on Star Trek's Legacy and Where Raffi Could Go Next - TV Shows

The last time we saw Michelle Hurd’s Raffaela ‘Raffi’ Musiker was during the finale of Star Trek: Picard on the bridge of the newly christened USS Enterprise-G. And while we have yet to find out what the future holds next for the first officer who is now serving under Captain Seven of Nine, Hurd herself spoke to IGN this week about her hopes for the character, how Star Trek changed her life, and how you can meet her and many other Star Trek legends at this weekend’s ST-SF: Trek to San Francisco convention.

ST-SF: Trek to San Francisco is set to take place at the Hyatt Regency SFO Hotel in San Francisco from March 8-10 and marks a big moment for fans. Alongside taking place at the future home of Starfleet Headquarters, ST-SF: Trek to San Francisco will kick off the return of regional Star Trek cons for Creation Entertainment, the same company that operated over 100 of these types of events per year during its peak in the ‘80s. According to Hurd, this is great news because there really isn’t anything quite like a Star Trek convention.

“One of the things Jonathan Frakes told me about becoming part of the Star Trek family on my first day of Picard Season 1 was, ‘Michelle, just get ready. When this show drops it's unlike any other gig you ever had. You immediately have 10 million families worldwide,’” she laughs. “Because of this, conventions have been phenomenal because I’m able to interact with people and see how profoundly Star Trek affects and unites us.”

Conventions like ST-SF on land are wonderful, but Hurd recently sailed aboard Star Trek: The Cruise and also had a great time. In addition to celebrating the life of the late Star Trek actor Kenneth Mitchell and playing D&D with Anthony Rapp, Wil Wheaton, and Dungeon Master Todd Stashwick, Hurd also had a very special thing happen while hosting a game show.

“One of the first things I had to do on the cruise was host Star Trek Trivial Pursuit,” Hurd said. “I had just gotten the questions moments before I had to get up in front of the 300 people and was a bit worried because I'm dyslexic. I got up and I started to talk and then I just stopped and said, ‘You know what? I'm just going to put the cards on the table. I'm totally dyslexic so you're going to hear me say some words that might sound bumpy, but just be gentle with me, have some grace, and it'll be fine.’

“What’s amazing is that, for the rest of the week, I had so many people come up to me to let me know how much that moment meant to them because they're dyslexic or someone they love is on the spectrum. They said it really made them feel seen and heard to just say it out loud and not be ashamed of it.”

The actress connects those moments to her Star Trek character as well.

“I always say that Raffi is perfectly imperfect,” she continued. “Because really, aren't we all perfectly imperfect? So that was an amazing thing. I feel like the Trek family is such an empathetic one. We all get it. We all get that we're different and unique and interesting, not perfect. We support each other. It got me so emotional during the whole week. I was just like, they're saying thank you for letting us know that you're with us and we're all the same. It was beautiful.”

Gene Roddenberry’s Impact

Hurd also talked about how Star Trek has changed her life for the better. To help stress her point, she took us all the way back to the beginning.

“Fifty-eight years ago, Roddenberry had some kind of wild crystal ball that he knew that he needed to create something or that we needed to have something created that would hold a mirror up to society, let us see what we're doing, and try to embrace the concept of inclusivity, diversity, and hope for a better tomorrow,” she said. “Who would think that by doing a show, those elements would become so much more enlightened and powerful in your present-day activities? But that's what Star Trek has done for me.

“I’m biracial, and back in the day when it wasn't so popular or cool to be biracial or to have Black and white parents, there were a lot of challenging moments. And my father knew how important it was to have his three Brown girls see themselves represented in this world. And so we, as a family, would sit down and watch the original Star Trek reruns to see Nichelle Nichols’ Uhura on that bridge. She gave us the permission to be bold and brave and say, ‘I'm supposed to be here. I'm allowed to be here.’ So I can only hope that there are some Brown and Black little kids with crazy hair that get to see me and say, ‘I'm here. I'm here in the year 2400 in space with my hair and everything.’"

What the Future May Hold for Star Trek: Legacy

Looking forward, Hurd is just as excited as we all are for the potential and heavily rumored Star Trek: Legacy spin-off series that would theoretically continue the adventures of the Enterprise-G crew and other beloved Star Trek characters in the 25th century. While she has no concrete news on the proposed series, she does have certain hopes for this possible next chapter.

“I absolutely think that Raffi loves Seven of Nine,” Hurd said of the Jeri Ryan character. “I think she would be a happy person to just be on a journey with Seven, whether they're in a relationship or not. And I shouldn't say whether they're in a relationship or not. They are. They're in a relationship because they're in each other's lives.”

She also hopes that Raffi’s addiction backstory will continue to be fleshed out if Legacy moves forward.

“I really want to see how Seven, Raffi, and Jack Crusher navigate the universe, but I also think that it's important to continue to tell the journey of people who are or who have been addicts,” she said. “Because once we have it, we're there forever. What’s a better way to put that pressure on her than to be Number One and know that she has a responsibility not only to her captain and somebody who she cares very deeply for, but to Starfleet as well?

“I think we could also continue to push and explore what it’s like having Seven of Nine as the first queer Star Trek captain without it being the focus. It should just be life and see how we navigate in it. Just like me talking about being dyslexic. I'd love for us to be able to reveal more of the things that people who look like they are presenting as ‘neurotypical normal’ are actually struggling with and going through. I think it would be phenomenal because you'll get an audience that is finally seeing themselves represented.”

We may have to wait to see where Raffi’s adventure actually goes next, but if you find yourself in the San Francisco area this weekend you can chat and even take a picture with Hurd, Ryan, and many more members of the Star Trek family. You can find all the info you need on ST-SF: Trek to San Francisco right here.

Watch: Did This Moment On ‘The View’ Just Accidentally Hint Whoopi Goldberg Is In The Next Star Trek Movie?

star trek michelle hurd

| April 16, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 41 comments so far

Last week, Paramount Pictures officially confirmed it is developing a new “origin story” Star Trek feature film for its 2025/2026 release slate. Little is known about what this movie is about or who’s in it, but an unusual exchange on The View may offer a clue.

“What’s happening right now?”

The segment in question is actually from a couple of weeks ago, when Zoe Saldaña was doing publicity for her new movie Absence of Eden . In another interview, the actress had talked about how she was eager to return to play Uhura in a fourth Kelvin-era movie, although she didn’t have any concrete details about how or when that would happen. When The View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin brought up Star Trek, Saldaña said something similar and noted Paramount had just hired another screenwriter to pen “a fourth script.”

Just after the subject of another Star Trek movie in the works was raised, Saldaña asked Whoopi Goldberg “Are you excited?” Goldberg, who played Guinan on Star Trek: The Next Generation (and later on Picard ), joked “maybe,” and then co-host Joy Behar jumped into the conversation. That’s where things got a bit confusing, as she seemed to be hinting that she’d already heard about some kind of role for Goldberg. Here is the exchange:

Saldaña: Are you excited? Goldberg: Maybe, just a little. Behar: Don’t tip your hand yet. Goldberg: What now? Behar: Don’t tip your hand yet. Don’t tell them you got the job yet. Goldberg: Okay. Behar: Did you get the job? Saldaña: For Star Trek? Oh my god! Goldberg: What is happening right now?… I have no other work. I’m trying to get home to Sardinia. Griffin: Do you have it or don’t you? Goldberg: I don’t know.

You can watch the full conversation in the video below (starting at 8:35).

Whoopi in new Trek?

It is not entirely clear what was going on here, and it may be nothing. But it does seem that Behar was hinting that her Oscar-winning co-host was being considered for a role in a Star Trek movie, presumably as Guinan. The project most likely to be casting roles already would not be the “Star Trek 4” sequel to Star Trek Beyond, as that isn’t expected to arrive until 2027 at the earliest and is (as noted by Saldaña) going through yet another rewrite. The more likely possibility is the origin movie, which is reported to be going into production later this year. The film is said to have a script already, with a story set decades before the 2009 Star Trek film (set in the mid-23rd century). El-Aurians like Guinan are very long-lived and Next Generation and Picard lore establish that Guinan was present on Earth in the past and ran a bar in Los Angeles during the early 21st century.

star trek michelle hurd

Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan and Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: Picard season 2

That said, this exchange on The View is far from definitive. Perhaps Behar was talking about a role for a different Star Trek project, possibly a streaming movie or one of the Paramount+ series. She also could have been completely mistaken, or could have been confusing one project with another and Goldberg has had no discussions about a return to Trek.  Goldberg did nothing to confirm she’s returning to Star Trek, although if she has signed on (or is in talks) about it, her casting would be a secret she wouldn’t want to divulge in the middle of an interview on The View .

Goldberg has previously appeared as Guinan in two Star Trek feature films: Generations in 1994 and Nemesis in 2002. The new “origin” movie is expected to have a new cast, but it would not be surprising if some legacy characters were included to create continuity, like Leonard Nimoy’s appearance in the 2009 Star Trek movie. So Guinan in “Untitled Star Trek Origin Movie” is entirely plausible.

star trek michelle hurd

Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002)

For now, this is just another curiosity about the next Star Trek. What do you make of the exchange? Let us know in the comments.

Could it be this?

Goldberg does have one recent connection to Star Trek: She narrated a recap of the first four seasons of Discovery for a special edition of  The Ready Room . That recap was released on YouTube on March 28, the same day the episode of The View was recorded with Zoe Saldaña. Presumably, Goldberg recorded it much earlier, as work on the Discovery season 5 episodes of The Ready Room started late last year. Behar (not being a big Star Trek fan) could have been conflating things related to Whoopi and Star Trek, and if Whoopi didn’t know what day the segment was coming out, she would have hesitated to clarify.

Michelle Hurd Talks Raffi’s Challenges And Working With Whoopi Goldberg In Star Trek: Picard Season 2

I get a sense that this is just awkward poking by Joy, there is not actual secret there.

Yeah, I agree. They’re reading too much into this. Would be fun though!

I take it the same way. At best they were just referencing the narration,

There’s nothing to see here, other than actors pulling each other’s chains. Fun stuff.

I can see her being in either movie. Or both! That would be a cool thread between the movies. One of the few they have left.

Agreed, that would be a neat link.

Star Trek Origins: Guinan

we can finally learn how she met Mark Twain!

There’d better be some graphic hook up scenes if they go there….

Yeah who knows but I would guess if she was in something it would be the prequel movie since (apparently) they are supposed to be making that one soon. That JJ verse movie is never happening lol.

I would love to see Guinan back.

It could also be the rumoured Picard movie.

They could be one and the same. Maybe there’s a time travel story that frames the prequel story again.

Anything is possible at this stage Eric although I got the impression that follow up to Picard would be a TV movie. So little is known about the prequel movie though so it’s certainly possible that there will be some sort of framing story connecting it to some of the legacy characters.

Ugh I hope not. Picard was already there for First Contact. It would feel so forced for Picard have to go back once again in time to save the federation from never forming.

Be down for that idea too.

That rumored Picard movie got called out as bull s**t quite a while back.

Heya. I’d love to see Guinan back, just not in the Kelvin movies. That is entirely separate for me.

Lol I know how much you hate JJ verse. But no I don’t see that happening anyway because it’s not the same seeing JJ verse Guinan hanging out with new characters.

I want the Prime universe Guinan. Or maybe she goes back in time from the 25th century and ends up in JJ verse in the 23rd century and meet her younger version. That’s not bad. 😁

Yep you know me too well lol. The best thing those movies did is make them separate from Prime and putting ACTUAL Guinan in there decades before the events of 2009 would wreck all that.

I think Guinan in the Kelvin timeline makes a lot of sense, as she’s able to sense changes to the timeline.

THat’s true too but I think this is different. When Yesterday’s Enterprise happened it erased the Prime timeline. Guinan essentially got moved from one timeline to thee next. With Kelvin that is not the case as we can see the Prime timeline continued unaffected post Spock leaving as is evidenced by ST Picard and even Guinan being in it.

Same here, even though arguably, it’s possible her species could navigate separate timelines.

True. I mean if she can project herself in PIC S2 then who knows?

I’ve been saying Guinan will show up this season on Discovery since she narrated that one clip about the history of the series.

That would make more sense to me. They would have to de-age her for a prequel movie, but on Discovery she could appear as she is now.

It would make sense given her history and the El-Aurian species being long lived. I could see her and Pelia both showing up, maybe even holding the final clues.

Trek movie schedule:(revised edition):

S31 P+ – 2024 Origins movie – 2025 Legacy/Picard anniversary movie P+? – 2026 Kelvin ST4 – 2027

could show up in S31 movie as Guinan but they apparently have a super small budget so I don’t see them deaging her so maybe she’s in the supposed PIC movie that Stewart was talking about

Whoopi, she is just amazing. Would love to see Guinan again.

Not a cameo. A good and well deserved story.

Very much YES!!!!

I want more than a cameo too but does she have that kind of time given The View?

I think she will make the time, if invited. She is not only in The View. Every year, she works in several productions on the side.

I always say Whoopi constantly upgraded STNG. Missed opportunities. Having her always so grateful to the franchise, she should be considered to make a bold return.

During Picard Season 2, she was not feeling well, having several health/treatment related issues. I think this is one of the reasons they hired a younger actor.

I saw the video clip and she looks way better now. Even her voice is better, the Discovery clip, so cool to listen to her voice and her humor in the recap.

Maybe one of the future streaming movies they are considering doing could be about Guinan or she could appear in SNW as a kind of foil or pal of Pelia another long living species. Or they are secretly developing a Q vs Guinan movie but that would not appeal to mainstream audiences. That could be the plot of an upcoming streaming movie.

Would truly love to see Guinan back. Didn’t like season 2 of Picard much but Guinan was a big highlight.

Yeah, I thought Ito Aghayere did a fantastic job as Guinan too. That felt like great casting to me. I wouldn’t hate seeing both actors in the role, flashing back and forth in time maybe?

Agreed, if there was anything good out of PIC S2, it was bringing Guinan back. The rest was an absolute mess.

While I’d love to see Whoopi jump back into the role of Guinan in a solid role, I just hope it’s not a Guinan origin story. Part of the character’s appeal is the mystery surrounding her gifts (that presumably most or all El-Aurians share) and exactly how old she is.

I don’t think it could be could it? The origin movie is supposed to take place decades before ST 2009 and Guinan is way older than that

If it’s anything, I bet it’s the Picard Streaming Movie project. We’ll see. Not much here to count on anything other than Whoopi’s ongoing involvement in Trek, and I suppose that’s a good thing.

Is there actually a Picard Streaming Movie project, though?

That’s a pretty liberal reading of this exchange to leap to the conclusion that Goldberg is being considered for a role in a movie where a new writer had just been hired.

Fandom is busy filling in the production schedules (scroll this thread). If we roll into the third quarter without so much as a peep about progress on any of these proposed productions, guess what? You all have been played. Again.

UMW Historic Preservation Alumna Pivots to Career as a Pop Culture Critic

April 24, 2024 by Guest Author Leave a Comment

When entertainment journalist Maggie Lovitt ’15 reviewed a new period drama, she relied on the knowledge base she built while earning a bachelor’s degree in historic preservation at the University of Mary Washington.

“I come at it from a deeper well of knowledge than the average viewer,” Lovitt said. For example, she asked more insightful questions when covering The New Look on Apple TV+, which follows Christian Dior and Coco Chanel launching their fashion empires in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. “Even if you don’t stay in the field you majored in, you can still use what you studied in your daily life.”

In just a few years, Lovitt has gone from managing a historic site to rubbing elbows with the stars at Hollywood award shows. Yet, she still employs the skills she honed at Mary Washington – conducting research, writing and editing, and collaborating on a team – in her current career. As a critic, screenwriter and actress, Lovitt has earned accolades and approval from the Screen Actors Guild, Rotten Tomatoes and the Critics Choice Association, which she shared in the spring edition of UMW’s Class Notes .

Maggie Lovitt '15, who earned a bachelor's degree in historic preservation, found success in a second career in entertainment journalism when the pandemic hit, showcasing the versatility of a public liberal arts and sciences education from UMW. Here, she interviews actors Matthew Lewis (left) and Jason Isaacs. Photo credit: FanExpo.
