History [ | ]

The Enterprise launched in 2364 under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard . During its maiden voyage the ship made first contact with the omnipotent Q . In 2365 Q officially introduced the Federation to the Borg collective and the Enterprise was subsequently involved in the events which led to the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2366 .

During its voyages, the Enterprise made numerous additional first contacts, among them with the Devidians , the Ferengi and the Solanae . The ship also contributed to scientific and archeological discoveries, most notably perhaps the uncovering of an ancient Gateway on Iconia .

The Enterprise was destroyed in 2371 , when the ship engaged the Duras Sisters over Veridan III . Its successor, the Sovereign class U.S.S. Enterprise-E , was launched the following year .

A few months later, in accordance with the Prime Directive, the saucer section was recovered from Veridan III and moved to the Fleet Museum.

Alternate Timelines [ | ]

  • In an alternate timeline created by the disappearance of the U.S.S. Enterprise-C in 2344, the Enterprise -D was a Battleship built to fight a war against the Klingon Empire . The Enterprise -D negated this timeline by helping the Enterprise -C return to its own time. However, the Enterprise -C was stranded in the future instead, only returning to its own timeline after another adventure . ( Yesterday's Enterprise )
  • In an alternate 2395 triggered by Q , the Enterprise -D was still in active service and had been refitted with a third nacelle and a cloaking device. ( All Good Things... ) This appears in-game as the Galaxy Dreadnought Cruiser .

The easter egg in “State of Q”

  • A plaque depicting the Enterprise -D can be seen inside starbases whose fleets have completed the special project "History and Movement".
  • Prior to its official appearance in "Measure of Morality (Part 2)", the Enterprise -D appeared as an Easter egg in the now-removed mission “State of Q” , seen through one of the hull breaches on the U.S.S. Saratoga . This is somewhat anachronistic however, as the Enterprise -D did not make it to Wolf 359 until after the battle was over.

The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) was a Constitution-class vessel operated by Starfleet in the 23rd century. It was the second Federation starship to bear the name Enterprise. After the Enterprise-A was decommissioned and mothballed, it was succeeded by the USS Enterprise-B .

In 2286, the Enterprise-A was commissioned at the San Francisco Fleet Yards on Stardate 8442.5. It was launched from Spacedock on the order of the Federation Council in appreciation of Captain James T. Kirk and his crew's efforts to prevent the Whale Probe from devastating Earth. The crew initially thought they were going to be assigned to a "freighter" at best, according to Leonard McCoy or the USS Excelsior, but the new Enterprise was soon revealed, docked next to the Excelsior. The crew took their stations and the Enterprise left Spacedock on a shakedown cruise.

The shakedown did not proceed as planned, and the Enterprise limped back to Spacedock for several weeks of repair under the supervision of Captain Montgomery Scott. Although its warp drive was working perfectly, half the doors on the ship were malfunctioning and several control interfaces did not work. The transporter was also nonfunctional, requiring shuttles to be used for off-ship missions.

Sybok and Sha Ka Ree

Before the repairs were complete, the Enterprise was called into duty in order to intervene in a kidnapping situation on Nimbus III . The ship was subsequently commandeered by the rogue Vulcan Sybok, who ordered it to the center of the Milky Way Galaxy in order to pursue the mythical Sha Ka Ree. During the return of Sybok to the ship aboard the Galileo, Commander Hikaru Sulu was forced to crash the shuttle into the Enterprise landing bay as the ship was pursued by a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, commanded by Klaa, and there was no time to use the tractor beam for a safe entrance. The Bird-of-Prey then followed the Enterprise to the center of the galaxy.

The crew was too involved with Sybok's visit to the planetoid found there and did not notice the Klingon vessel enter sensor range. The Bird-of-Prey caught the Enterprise off-guard and disabled it before it had a chance to retaliate. However, Klingon ambassador Korrd, rescued from Nimbus III , relieved Captain Klaa and ordered the Bird-of-Prey to stand down. The Klingon crew was later invited to a reception following the return of the Enterprise to Kirk's control and the discovery that Sha Ka Ree was a myth. The brig was also damaged during the mission, as Captain Scott blew a hole in the back wall to free Captain Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy.

Spock also kept a picture of himself and his friends taken on the bridge of the Enterprise-A from this time for the next century until his death in 2263 of the alternate reality.

Sometime after the mission to Sha Ka Ree, Commander Sulu transferred off the Enterprise-A, as he was promoted to Captain and be given command of the USS Excelsior.

Final Voyage

In 2293, the Enterprise-A was due to be retired along with most of its command crew. However, it was pressed back into service for one last mission as an escort for Klingon chancellor Gorkon during the initial stages of the Khitomer Accords. The ship rendezvoused with the Klingon flagship, Kronos One, and was to follow it to Earth. Unfortunately, a joint Starfleet , Klingon , and Romulan conspiracy had an operative, Lieutenant Valeris, aboard the ship. Valeris participated in a plan to implicate the Enterprise and Captain Kirk as rogue assailants in Gorkon's murder, with the goal of derailing the peace process. The Enterprise appeared to fire two photon torpedoes at Kronos One, temporarily disabling its propulsion and gravity systems. Amid the chaos two space-suited Starfleet crew members, Burke and Samno, beamed aboard, assassinating Gorkon. Valeris altered the ship's records to make it seem as if two torpedoes had been fired. The torpedoes actually came from a cloaked prototype Bird-of-Prey directly below the Enterprise, which had been modified to fire while cloaked.

Kirk and Dr. McCoy were arrested and tried for the murder, and sentenced to life imprisonment on the penal colony Rura Penthe. Valeris also provided Kirk's log entries from the Enterprise to the Klingon co-conspirators to further implicate Kirk. The Enterprise was ordered back to Earth, but Spock ignored orders and initiated an investigation aboard the ship. He discovered evidence which linked Valeris to the conspiracy, despite her best efforts to sabotage the investigation. The Enterprise then entered Klingon space, masquerading as the freighter Ursva and rescued Kirk and McCoy. Spock mind melded with Valeris and learned more about the conspiracy, including details of the Bird-of-Prey and names of those involved. Captain Sulu aboard the USS Excelsior provided Kirk with the new location of the peace conference, and the two ships warped to Khitomer in order to prevent a second assassination of the Federation President and the new Klingon chancellor, Azetbur.

The Hull Breached

General Chang was waiting in orbit with his Bird-of-Prey, however, and the Enterprise was attacked upon arrival. The starship was seriously damaged and suffered a hull breach through its saucer section. The Excelsior, too, was helpless against the cloaked ship. Fortunately, Spock, McCoy, and Uhura devised a plan to use a photon torpedo equipped with sensors capable of tracking ionization from the Bird-of-Prey's impulse engines. It successfully hit Chang's vessel, knocking it out of the cloak and leaving it vulnerable to further torpedo volleys from the Enterprise and the Excelsior. Following the destruction of the Bird-of-Prey, Enterprise and Excelsior crew beamed down to the Khitomer Conference and apprehended the conspirators, preventing the assassination.

"Second star to the right… and straight on 'til morning"

Following the Khitomer mission, the Enterprise was ordered by Starfleet Command to return to spacedock to be decommissioned. Captain Kirk ordered the ship on course to the "second star to the right... and straight on 'til morning." Kirk later recorded in his log that this was the final cruise of the starship Enterprise under his command, commenting, "This ship and her history will shortly become the care of another crew. To them and their posterity will we commit our future. They will continue the voyages we have begun and journey to all the undiscovered countries, boldly going where no man – where no one – has gone before."

The next USS Enterprise , the refit Excelsior-class USS Enterprise-B , was launched later that year. The Enterprise-A remained mothballed as of 2294.

Star trek: discovery season 5 brings back enterprise captain archer tribute.

The spirit of Star Trek: Enterprise's Captain Jonathan Archer continues to be felt in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 over a thousand years later.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 1 - "Red Directive"

  • Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery pays tribute to Captain Archer from Star Trek: Enterprise.
  • Archer Space Dock in Discovery serves as a hub for Starfleet upgrades and new starship construction in honor of Jonathan Archer.
  • Captain Archer's legacy and impact on the formation of the Federation are essential to Star Trek: Discovery's future.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 brought back the 32nd century Starfleet's tribute to Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) from Star Trek: Enterprise. Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Enterprise are TV series at opposite points bookending Star Trek 's Prime Universe timeline . Enterprise is set in the 22nd century and charts the pioneering voyages of the NX-01, the first Starship Enterprise commanded by Captain Archer. Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3-5 are set over a thousand years later in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery season 1 began in 2256, a century after Captain Archer's NX-01 Enterprise first set off to explore the galaxy. Although Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery's crew never met Archer, Star Trek: Discovery certainly bore the influence of Star Trek: Enterprise , especially in Discovery 's early seasons. Both series were Star Trek prequels, and Discovery 's original blue Starfleet uniforms were a visual link to the distinctive blue jumpsuits worn on Star Trek: Enterprise by Captain Archer's crew .

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

Star trek: discovery brings back archer space dock, captain archer's spirit is part of the 32nd-century starfleet.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere , "Red Directive," saw the return of the Archer Space Dock. Following a mission to Q'Mau where Captain Michael Burnham, Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie), and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) were unable to apprehend couriers Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis), the USS Discovery and USS Antares used their combined shields to protect a Q'Mau settlement from an avalanche. Afterward, a dusty Discovery jumped back for repairs at the Archer Space Dock near United Federation of Planets headquarters.

The goal of the Archer Space Dock is to upgrade the existing Starfleet and build the next generation of starships.

The Archer Space Dock was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 4's premiere, "Kobayashi Maru." The facility was unveiled by Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) to the first new class of Starfleet Academy. The goal of the Archer Space Dock is to upgrade the existing Starfleet and build the next generation of starships. It was only fitting to name the Archer Space Dock after the Captain of the first Starship Enterprise, and the first Federation President, Jonathan Archer .

The Archer Space Dock is reminiscent of previous facilities that have built and repaired the USS Enterprise throughout Star Trek .

Enterprise’s Archer Is An Important Part Of Star Trek: Discovery Millennium Celebration

The federation began with archer a thousand years ago (give or take a few decades).

Although Captain Jonathan Archer wasn't name-dropped like Star Trek: The Next Generation 's Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) was in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere, Archer's spirit was evoked in the Federation's Millennium Celebration . Discovery season 5 is set in 3191, a thousand and 30 years after the founding of the United Federation of Planets . Captain Archer was a pivotal figure whose voyages forged the bonds between United Earth, Vulcan, Tellar Prime, and Andoria that led to the formation of the Federation.

Captain Archer was aware of events in the 30th century as a result of his involvement in the Temporal War in Star Trek: Enterprise.

Jonathan Archer is essentially the George Washington of the Federation . After his decade-long run as Captain of the Enterprise, Archer served as the first Federation President. There would be no Federation without Jonathan Archer, and he would be pleased to know that the Federation still endures in the 32nd century. Star Trek: Discovery is forging the future in the 32nd century, but the Archer Space Dock shows the Federation never forgets it was Captain Jonathan Archer who helped it begin.

Picard's Latest The Next Generation Vessel Makes the Reunion Complete

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 has been an unapologetic The Next Generation reunion, and the return of a beloved Galaxy-class starship makes it complete.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, Episode 9, "Vox," now streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 was always sold as a reunion of The Next Generation cast , but the penultimate episode of the series brought back another important "character." After being destroyed in the first film for this cast, the USS Enterprise-D returns in all her Galaxy-class glory. Insofar as a setting can be a character in a series, bringing back this vessel makes the reunion complete.

Thankfully, the storytellers set up very clever reasons the heroes would use this ship beyond it being something every TNG fan watching wanted to see. Against Geordi La Forge's objections, Starfleet employed a kind of "Bluetooth for Ships" that allows them all to be linked and controlled by a single crew. A stealth Borg invasion caused by Jack Crusher and his big secret means that all Starfleet ships are now compromised. So, Picard and the gang need an "analog" ship, as Geordi puts it, that can't be taken over by the Borg without old-fashioned tactile assimilation. As the curator of the Starfleet Museum and a master engineer, Geordi was in a unique position to be able to restore this ship over the past couple of decades. He also made sure the Enterprise-D was fully weapons capable, and even as a classic, the vessel still packs a powerful punch.

For The Next Generation, Home Is a Place as Much as Its People

Countless stories impart the message that "home" doesn't have to be a building, a city or even a country. It's people. If that's true, then once Worf and Deanna joined the crew of the USS Titan-A , Picard was home. However, places can have important meanings, too. And the return of the signature vessel on The Next Generation reminds these characters of the best time in their lives. Even with the world ending outside that museum, it's fitting that returning to the bridge still filled them with joy and levity. In trying times, people are always a little more comfortable when they are home.

The trick for Picard during its entire run is fans want a return of The Next Generation 's glory days instead of new stories about a man at a different point in his life. Throughout Picard 's run, Jean-Luc hasn't done all that much captaining. He usually finds himself in a chair in the latter episodes, but never on his ship. Season 3 is the most time any of these characters have spent on a ship (at least on-screen) since Star Trek: Nemesis fizzled at the box office. The Titan-A is a great ship. The moment Picard took the chair to guide them out of the nebula was satisfying but, in hindsight, now feels like a half-measure. Picard belongs in command of a ship, and that ship better be called "Enterprise."

From the retro-futuristic late-1980s and early-1990s design of the bridge to Andrew Probert's reimagining of the classic saucer and nacelle shape, the Enterprise-D is a special ship. It was the flagship of second-wave Star Trek , as recognizable as the original Enterprise. Putting Picard back in the chair of that particular ship on that specific bridge is unquestionably fan service. Still, that doesn't mean it's extraneous, forced or not emotionally resonant to the characters involved. If anyone has a chance to beat this particular "no-win scenario" it's that crew on that ship.

Star Trek: Picard Season 3 Has Been Building Up to the Enterprise-D

In the Picard Season 3 premiere , Picard's favorite bar, Ten Forward, gave out model starships to celebrate Frontier Day. Riker noted that the Enterprise-D models were not a popular choice. No one wanted "the fat ones" he said. Yet, to these characters, this ship is the most beautiful thing in the universe. From Riker talking about the USS Titan being where his children were born to Seven of Nine reminiscing about being reborn on Voyager , ships being "home" is a recurring theme this season.

Riker and Troi fell in love on that ship. Data lived most of his conscious life on it. Beverly Crusher let one son go and left the ship before it could take another. The Enterprise-D was a huge part of their lives. To the audience, it's the only place they've ever truly belonged. At a time when humanity is threatened by its worst enemy, being home is a comfort, albeit a small one. Yet, as Beverly said earlier in the season, facing down impossible problems together is what this crew does. On the bridge of this ship is when they were at their best, and Earth needs them at their best.

After the ship was all but destroyed in Star Trek: Generations it makes sense the ship would end up where it was. Starfleet should know better than to leave its tech lying around, and Geordi is the type to restore it. Yet, this moment also gives The Next Generation fans the equivalent of the "Chewie, we're home" moment in Star Wars: The Force Awakens . It's not just the audience who will get closure from the return of the Enterprise-D. If these characters have to face certain death, there is no better place to be than with their friends back home.

Star Trek: Picard debuts its series finale Thursday, April 20, on Paramount+ .

Service history and disposition [ ]

The Enterprise was originally scheduled to be launched in 2245 , however due to the interference from Nero in 2233 (and based on scans of the Narada ), the ship was redesigned and its launch pushed back to 2258 . ( ST website  : StarTrek.com )

The vessel was constructed at the Riverside Shipyard during the 2250s (the vessel was constructed from 2254 to 2258 under the eye of Christopher Pike ), and was designated as the Federation flagship upon its launch, much as her primary universe counterpart . Its planned maiden voyage in 2258 , under the command of Christopher Pike, was brought forward after Earth received a distress call from Vulcan . With the bulk of the fleet engaged in the Laurentian system, the Enterprise departed from Earth Spacedock along with seven other starships to respond to the call. Its departure was delayed when Hikaru Sulu , who had replaced the ship's master helmsman after he had fallen ill, failed to disengage the external inertial damper, and it arrived shortly after the rescue fleet had been destroyed by the Romulan mining ship Narada . ( TOS movie : Star Trek , ST video game : Star Trek App )

The Enterprise proved to be no match for the technologically-advanced weapons of the Narada ; a single barrage of missiles reduced the ship's deflector shields to 36%. Nero did not destroy the Enterprise , however, as he recognized it as the ship which Spock served on when he was younger. Enterprise was unable to contact Starfleet or to begin evacuating the inhabitants of Vulcan, as the Narada 's drill platform prohibited communications and transporter use.

Following the destruction of Vulcan and the capture of Captain Pike, acting Captain Spock intended to take the Enterprise to rendezvous with the rest of the fleet at the Laurentian system. However, after being forced to resign his command to James T. Kirk, the Enterprise reversed course in an attempt to catch the Narada before it could strike Earth.

Emerging from warp in the atmosphere of Titan , the Enterprise hid from the Narada 's sensors using the magnetic distortion of Saturn 's rings, while beaming Spock and Kirk aboard the Romulan ship before it could activate its drill. The Enterprise then pursued the Narada and prevented it from destroying the Jellyfish , which was being piloted by Spock. Before the Enterprise beamed him off, Spock set the Jellyfish on a collision course with the Narada ; the impact detonated the red matter aboard the Jellyfish , creating a massive black hole which trapped the Narada . Kirk then opened hailing frequencies and offered assistance to the Romulan, but when he said he would rather die in agony then accept assistance from the crew, Kirk then had the Enterprise fire everything and the Federation starship unleashed a devastating barrage of phaser and photon torpedo fire that slammed into the massive mining vessel. The Enterprise destroyed the Narada , but was nearly pulled into the black hole herself because she ended up too close when the event horizon expanded and almost consumed the ship. The Enterprise was finally saved when chief engineer Montgomery Scott ejected the ship's warp core and detonated it and the blast propelled the Enterprise to safety.

Following the successful mission, Pike was promoted to admiral , and Kirk was assigned command of the Enterprise as his relief. Kirk accepted Spock as his first officer and took the Enterprise out on its first mission of exploration. ( TOS movie & novelization : Star Trek )

Eventually, the Enterprise stumbled across the SS Valiant 's distress beacon and attempted to cross the galactic barrier . The ship was crippled by the barrier but the crew managed to get the ship to Delta Vega . After a mutated Gary Mitchell was stopped by Kirk and Spock, repairs were made to the ship and the crew proceeded on their way. ( TOS - IDW Star Trek, 1st story arc comics : " Issue 1 ", " Issue 2 ")

The ship was assigned to take High Commissioner Ferris to help with a delivery of supplies to Makus III , but stopped briefly to investigate the Murasaki 312 formation. When the shuttlecraft Galileo was affected by the formation and crash landed, Nyota Uhura managed to pilot another shuttle and rescue the Galileo crew. The ship continued onward to Makus III for the supply delivery. ( TOS - The Galileo Seven comics : " Part 1 ", " Part 2 ")

Following an encounter with the Gorn, the Enterprise was sent to conduct a survey of Nibiru when the crew discovered a volcanic eruption would render the primitive race extinct. In order to preserve the Prime Directive , the Enterprise was submerged in an ocean on the planet and an away team launched to deploy a cold fusion device in the volcano. After the shuttle was destroyed, Kirk ordered the Enterprise to retrieve Spock and the starship was exposed to the natives who, soon after, began to worship the vessel. Returning to Earth, Kirk was demoted for his actions and Spock reassigned, but Pike convinced Admiral Alexander Marcus to allow Kirk to remain as Executive Officer with Pike returning as Captain. The changes were short lived as Pike was soon killed in a terrorist attack by Commander John Harrison and Kirk was assigned to pursue the criminal to Qo'Nos and kill him with experimental weaponry.

Shortly after arriving in the Neutral Zone, Enterprise lost her ability to go to warp and recently appointed Chief engineer Chekov - Scotty having resigned his position over their mission - was unable to immediately diagnose the problem. As Kirk, Spock, Uhura, and a group of security officers went to capture Harrison, Sulu remained in command with orders to destroy the Ketha lowlands due to Harrison being there.

With repairs nearly completed, and the away team back aboard the Enterprise with Harrison (who admitted to being Khan Noonien Singh), Admiral Marcus arrived in the USS Vengeance and demanded Kirk hand over Khan, but Kirk refused, intending to expose the conspiracy by bringing Khan to trial on Earth.

The Enterprise immediately went to warp; however, the Vengeance caught up and attacked. Enterprise was knocked out of warp not far from Earth and was nearly destroyed by the Vengeance ; however, the quick actions of Commander Scott (who had been a stowaway on the Vengeance ) disabled the weapons. Kirk and Khan donned thruster suits in order to board the Vengeance , while Spock ordered McCoy to remove the cryochambers from the experimental torpedoes. Khan killed Admiral Marcus and demanded Spock hand over the torpedoes in exchange for Kirk, Scotty and Carol Marcus and the safety of the Enterprise . Spock agreed but Khan planned to attack anyway, however, Spock had planned for this and the torpedoes detonated aboard the Vengeance . The damage inflicted on both ships caused them to plummet to Earth, but Kirk was able to repair the warp core before the Enterprise crashed into San Francisco .

Severely damaged, the Enterprise had to undergo a repair and refit to mend the damage caused by the attack by the Vengeance . In 2260 , the ship was rechristened and assigned to a five-year mission of exploration. ( TOS movie : Star Trek Into Darkness )

For the next two and a half years Enterprise continued on her mission of exploration. Heading to Yorktown Station the Enterprise docked upon arrival inside the massive station's dock. There the ship was resupplied and the crew was granted shore leave before the ship left to explore uncharted space past a nearby nebula.

USS Enterprise in the Necro Cloud-1-

The USS Enterprise in 2263

Shortly after the Enterprise docked an apparently alien female named Kalara was picked up by station personnel when her escape pod approached Yorktown Station. She told Kirk and the station personnel that her crew was being held captive on the planet Altamid, which was past the nebula.

The Enterprise was dispatched on a mission to Altamid to rescue the crew of a crashed alien starship. After finding a route through the nebula the ship was attacked by Krall 's swarm upon arrival. The attack was devastating, with the secondary hull destroyed in the attack, and the saucer section crash landing on Altamid. Many of the crew were able to leave in escape pods , but were captured by Krall's forces and imprisoned on the planet below.

On the surface of Altamid Chekov and Kirk were able to make their way back to the saucer section. Confronting Kalara she told them that she had been forced to help Krall in order to save her crew, but it was a ruse on her part to obtain an artifact that Krall was seeking.

Kirk and Chekov engaged the thrusters on the wreck of the Enterprise in order to buy time for them to escape the ship. The Enterprise saucer flipped over, crushing Kalara in the process and even further damaging the saucer.

The surviving Enterprise crew members were able to escape in the USS Franklin , which had also crash landed on Altamid approximately 100 years earlier. After Krall was defeated, Starfleet built a new Enterprise at Yorktown Station, which was launched under the command of Captain Kirk later in 2263. ( TOS movie : Beyond )
