Brooklyn based duo Stress Angel didn’t cross my radar until a couple years ago, after the release of their debut full length, Bursting Church . I can’t remember specifically who turned me onto them (probably Aaren from Molder), but I’ll tell you this much: Had I been aware of them in 2021, Stress Angel definitely would’ve made my year end list . Their unique brand of primitive death metal drew heavily from the genre’s earliest days, specifically that of Possessed’s Seven Churches . Everything about this album, from the riffs and vocals to the delivery and production, sounded straight out of ’85, while simultaneously boasting the same creativity of that crucial era.

Fast forward a few years and several high profile shows later (a slot at Hell’s Heroes and co-headline tour with Swedish purists Century caught the attention of many); Stress Angel are back and more sinister than ever with their sophomore offering, Punished by Nemesis . If you’re expecting a sophomore slump here, think again. Hence the title of the album, Stress Angel absolutely punish the listener with another ferocious affair. They fire on all cylinders from beginning to end, without giving us the impression that this is a mere rehash of Bursting Church .

The opening title cut comes storming out of the gates, fast and evil with that undeniable Seven Churches tinge. If death metal as a genre had followed more in this vein than Scream Bloody Gore , chances are it would sound like this. Cuts like “Ritual Debt”, “Ancient Weakness”, and “Ridicules of Death” also recall the days before the genre became pigeonholed by Cookie Monster vocals and assembly line productions. The energy is chaotic and feral, with little regard for convention, opting instead to assault us with an overwhelming occult atmosphere and bleak changeovers akin to Autopsy at their most demented.

There is also an undeniable first wave black metal influence throughout this release, so much so that I feel I’d be doing a disservice if I didn’t at the very least include it in the genre tag. On “Monsignor’s Wish” and “Close to the Presence of Suffering” specifically, we get a foreboding sense of darkness in the riffs and vocals that lie somewhere between The Return era Bathory and Sentence of Death era Destruction. Drummer/frontman Manny Sores occasionally lets out these Schmier-esque shrieks that makes my blood curdle the same way those Possessed/Kreator tom drums do (It’s the little things!). There is, however, no cut more diabolical on here than “Jericho’s Trumpet”: A raging masterclass in ’80s black metal worship.

Punished by Nemesis sounds like it could’ve been released anytime in the past 40 years, which is a testament to the timelessness of the metal on display. Furthermore, Stress Angel needs to be praised for their ability to craft such innovative and unpredictable extreme metal in an age where nearly everything that could be done has been done. Perhaps there’s some sorcery at play here? Whatever the case may be, this dynamic and devastating duo are bringing down the hammer with no mercy. Make sure not to stand in their path.

Demo:listen: Stress Angel

Today New York City-based death thrash trio Stress Angel release their excoriating self-titled debut. 6 tracks of gritty death-ripping madness from the grime-filled streets straight to your pain-thirsty skull.

The band’s founding member Manny Soares says Stress Angel was originally a solo project. They continue, “Had some riffs for a few years. Had a few friends help organize them. Didn’t go anywhere. Then my old comrade Nicolai Orifice moved close by and we began resurrecting some of these old songs. We immediately got working on new material and before we knew it we were on the warpath. Our friend Dozer was eager for some action and joined us on the bass rig for the demo recordings but has since moved on to the facility known as Stone Henge. RIP.”

They explain how they decided to thrash old school death, “Well after 15 years of playing in this style we found out there was an opening on the bandwagon and we decided to jump on.”

Stress Angel

According to Manny, the name Stress Angel is “inspired by the fact that both he “and Nicolai suffer from indescribable anxiety.” He says, “We knew stress must be included in the name and then we both looked in the mirror at our angelic faces and the rest was history.”

The writing process behind Stress Angel’s music, Manny says goes as follows: “Well we usually come up with some ideas on our own watch. Then when we get together we drink a lot. Then we mash the stuff together until it comes out in a smooth and orderly fashion. The first song I think we wrote together was called ‘Root Under a Tilted Gravestone’ which is not on the tape but maybe we will use it someday. We’ve already written a handful of new materials for some kind of album perhaps.”

Stress Angel covers a variety of topics in it lyrics, including “Suffering!” Manny says, as well as  “mostly nice subjects such as pedophelia in the church, suicide, overdosing on drugs, forced demoniac sex, being kidnapped and tortured. Just life stuff.”  

Stress Angel recorded their demo themselves. “We recorded ourselves live with a janky 4 mic set up in our rehearsal room on the first day of the Covid lockdown,” Manny explains. “It was dark times in this city. It was all we could do to stay alive.”

The demo is out on tape today from Stygian Black Hand. “Stygian Black Hand is horny to release this filth and we are grateful for this,” Manny says.  

“Nicolai and Myself have been writing loads of material for a future release,” Manny says, concerning the future of Stress Angel. “We’ve lost a bassist, then we got a new one but he will probably go away and we will need another one. That’s how it goes. Maybe once this TV flu goes away we can play a live show for once. But we doubt it.”

Angel Reese wasted no time before getting a new Mercedes-Benz after the Chicago Sky selected her with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft earlier this month.

The former LSU All-American forward — who became one of the faces of the NIL era and has a current valuation of $1.8 million — unveiled her AMG G-Class SUV in a post on her Instagram Story while in Illinois on Tuesday.

The luxury vehicle, which features Nappa leather red interior and black rims, has a starting price of $183,000, per Mercedes-Benz .

“ New city . New beginnings. New big body Barbie Benz,” Reese captioned the post, tagging Champion Motoring in San Diego, Calif., which has worked with a number of pro athletes.

Reese signed an NIL deal with Mercedes-Benz of Baton Rouge and received her first Benz ahead of her 21st birthday in May 2023.

“Getting my dream car at 21 in my new favorite city >>>>>,” she wrote in a post on TikTok that featured her behind the wheel while her teacup Yorkie, Tiago, sat in the passenger’s seat.

Reese has a total of 17 different NIL deals, according to a March 2023 report by Sponsor United, which includes ZOA Energy drink, Raising Cane’s, Coach, PlayStation, McDonald’s, Wingstop, Outback Steakhouse and Amazon.

Reese worked with Mercedes-Benz to get her first car in the NIL era, something she revealed a few weeks after LSU clinched its first-ever women’s NCAA basketball title with a win over Iowa in 2023.

Caitlin Clark and the Hawkeyes eliminated LSU from this year’s tournament in the Elite Eight, and Iowa came up short against the South Carolina Gamecocks in the championship matchup on April 7.

The Indiana Fever selected Clark with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

The WNBA will open training camps on April 28 and the season starts May 14.

Caitlin Clark and Fever frenzy hit the WNBA, boosting ticket prices and jersey sales

Caitlin Clark won't make her WNBA debut until May 3, when the Indiana Fever — which selected her as the first overall draft pick last week — play their first preseason game in Texas.

But Clark is already making an outsized impact on the league, which she joins as the all-time leading scorer in college basketball history.

Her dominance is credited with bringing more attention to the Iowa Hawkeyes and women's basketball writ large — and the " Caitlin Clark Effect " seems poised to continue at the professional level, if early numbers are any indication.

"When Caitlin Clark declared for the WNBA draft, we instantly saw the Indiana Fever's average ticket price double," Laura Correnti, founder and CEO of Deep Blue Sports + Entertainment, told Morning Edition earlier this month.

"We're also hearing from some of the different teams across the WNBA that they are also seeing bumps in ticket sales and interest in terms of near sellout for when Caitlin Clark comes to town."

Clark's Fever jersey sold out in most sizes on the Fanatics website within an hour of her being selected in Monday's draft, in what the retailer says is now the top-selling jersey for any draft pick ever.

And the WNBA plans to show 36 of the Fever's 40 regular season games on its national broadcast and streaming partners, compared to 22 last year , when it finished 10th of 12 teams . It hasn't had a winning season since 2015.

Demand to see Clark in action has sent ticket prices skyrocketing and prompted teams in several cities to move their games to bigger venues.

Last week, the Washington Mystics announced that they will be relocating their June 7 game against the Indiana Fever from their 4,200-seat home stadium in D.C. to the 20,000 plus-capacity Capital One Arena, citing " unprecedented demand ."

It's the second team to announce such a move in anticipation of Fever frenzy. The Las Vegas Aces have said they will move their July 2 game against Indiana from Michelob Ultra Arena to T-Mobile Arena to accommodate some 8,000 additional fans.

And in Chicago — where the Sky picked up some high draft picks including Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso — fans are petitioning the team to relocate their June and August games against the Fever from the Wintrust Arena to the larger United Center.

"Larger quantities of less expensive seats would allow both Caitlin Clark fans and Chicago Sky fans to enjoy a great game at the incredible United Center," reads the online petition, which had over 700 signatures as of Monday morning.

The Indiana Fever accounts for all of the WNBA's top 10 most expensive regular season games this year, according to data from the ticket site Gametime reported by Forbes .

It says the most expensive WNBA game on the secondary market is Indiana's July 14 game against the Minnesota Lynx, with a median ticket price of $615. The Fever's June games against the Chicago Sky ($600) and Washington Mystics ($530) also made the list.

Tickets to the Fever's first preseason game, against the Dallas Wings in Arlington, Texas, ranged from $110 to $1,100. CEO Greg Bibb told WFAA that the Wings scheduled that game well before the draft, anticipating Clark would enter and be picked first.

"We have seen incremental gains in business growth every year since 2020, and what's happened in the NCAA has been an accelerant to that growth," Bibb told the outlet. "We structured our ticket sales accordingly and waited later in the calendar year to go on sale with them to create a pent-up demand post-draft."

Resale prices for Fever tickets are going up too, with Vivid Seats reporting they have nearly tripled since last season.

Clark's financial boost to the WNBA has amplified the spotlight on its longstanding pay gap with the NBA. That gap is the result of the leagues' differences in revenue, season length and union contracts, among other factors.

As a rookie, Clark's base salary will be $76,535 this year and just over $338,000 for four years — far lower than that of her male counterparts and at least some NBA mascots .

In contrast, Victor Wembanyama, the 2023 first-round draft pick in the NBA, started on the San Antonio Spurs with a base salary of over $12 million, as part of a four-year contract exceeding $55 million.

That disparity has drawn renewed attention and outrage from many viewers. Even President Biden weighed in , tweeting last week that "right now we're seeing that even if you're the best, women are not paid their fair share."

But Clark — whose name, image and likeness are valued at over $3 million — is expected to make money in other ways , including endorsement deals with companies including State Farm and Gatorade. And The Athletic reported last week that Clark is nearing a deal with Nike worth over $20 million that includes a signature shoe.
