Hello. We are planning to go there this last week of October. Is the area around Balet Island a Marine Protected Sanctuary? We are going to try fishing there (Catch and Release) with my buddy.

Thank you for this detailed trip to kalamansig, exactly what im looking for. Planning to visit gensan, lake cebu, kalamansig. Still saving for the budget… Transportations, fares, travel time- complete❤… For sure, its safe to explore the whole place ?

thank you so much for all your beautiful comments. safety is never an issue in this secluded island. you may visit sandayan beach club, balot island, KSK facebook page for more photos and details of the location.

Whoah, 7 hours trip is a no joke! but if this is what we get out from traveling, well, I’d surely risk. Seeing the beautiful island of kamansig sultan kudarat, thought it’s new to me, I bet it is something worth it to visit indeed. Good thing you guys added the guide on how to go there. At least, for those who are trying to visit the place can definitely make their way there.

What a heavily place on earth! I wish I could be there for just a weekend. Time to reload my battery from the moving. Been doing so much at home; paining and decoration. This would be perfect to escape the Swedish snow and cold also. Although I love the winter and different seasons, the summer is still the best on a beach like that!

I would really like to visit Balet Island, it looks like a paradise for diving or snorkeling. I love all the underwater corals through which “Nemo” fish are hiding. The water is also so clear! It’s amazing that there is no electricity on the island, you can really connect with the nature and appreciate it better.

Im from Mindanao but haven’t been to Sultan Kudarat. Looking at this blog, it looks like a hidden paradise waiting to be discovered. I like beaches which are not so crowded and Balet isalnd looks very peaceful. Do you recommend visiting the place amidst the news?

I’ve read a blog about Sultan Kudarat this past month. Honestly, I have no idea how beautiful the place is and you’re adding a new lovely island on the list. The place looks so virgin which is expected because it’s not really on the spotlight now. I know there are a lot of good places in Mindanao but I’ve always been scared to go.

Same here Bea, the willingness is there. But lack of proper information causes us to think twice. Only after we have done due diligence, safety comes first.

Balet Island looks worth visiting! I’ll ask an obvious question though when it comes to destinations in Mindanao… is it safe? I don’t know much about Sultan Kudarat and have only been to a few places in Mindanao, considering the safety and accessibility of its attractions but will gladly go there if these are not issues.

Amazing how you captured this place beautifully. I was wondering how you did the photos? They are so colorful! This island is very enchanting! I would love to visit it and marvel at the place with my special someone. It sure is romantic.. and its the perfect place to really relax and unplug from everything..

Never heard of this place before! This is a great review too. Places look beautiful and I’d love to see this place in person one day 😀

This is the first time I’ve heard of Balet and it looks beautiful especially the underwater photos. And how cute that it does look like a crocodile when viewed from above. I have never been to Mindanao and I wouldn’t mind including this in the itinerary when I finally go there.

Your pictures are amazing! It’s nice to learn about relatively untouched and undeveloped places in the Philippines. Makes me want to explore the country more. I must admit, i no nothing about sultan kudarat so it’s great to be able to explore a part of it through your pictures:) fingers crossed that i can visit one day!

I agree with you, Pia. There are a lot of places we have not visited, much less heard of. And so it is nice that technology has made it possible for blogs, which in turn is used to showcase destinations, among many other things… actually, everything. The only thing I am wary about with ‘exotic destinations’ is security, though.

The Bountiful Province of Sultan Kudarat

sultan kudarat tourism

Sultan Kudarat Capitol

Sultan Kudarat is a province of the Philippines located in the SOCCSKSARGEN region in Mindanao. Its capital is Isulan and borders Maguindanao and Cotabato to the north, South Cotabato and Sarangani to the south, and Davao del Sur to the east, and the Celebes Sea to the west.

Sultan Kudarat was once a part of the former empire province of Cotabato. It was created as a separate province along with Maguindanao and North Cotabato on November 22, l973 by virtue of Presidential Decree No. 341 signed by former Pres. Ferdinand E. Marcos.

The purpose of dividing Cotabato into three smaller provinces is clearly stated in Presidential Decree No. 341, which pertinently provided, to wit: “Whereas, the province of Cotabato is one of the largest and richest provinces of the Philippines;

Whereas, the potentials of the province have not been fully developed due to the magnitude of the task of provincial development and troubles that have long plagued the area;

Whereas, the many conflicting political, social and economic interests that have limited the progress of the province must be resolved in order to promote the stability and accelerate the development of Cotabato; and

Whereas, there is a need for dividing the present province into smaller units which can be more effectively administered and developed”.

The name Sultan Kudarat given to the province was derived from a Muslim ruler, the late Sultan Muhammad Dipatuan Kudarat who begun to assert his leadership in the year 1619 and reigned the Sultanate of Maguindanao from January 1625 to 1671 AD.

He was a virtuous leader who embodied the idea of basic unity, oneness and freedom among the diverse people scattered throughout its Sultanate. For this reason, he was considered as one of the National heroes of our country and for his honor this province was named after him.

The new capitol of Sultan Kudarat dubbed as “Taj Mahal of the South”, one of the Asia’s most impressive state buildings, inspired by a blended Malay-Arab contemporary arts. The design integrates a function hall, executive office and a hallway reminiscent of the 13th century sultanate palace.

Outside is a broad romance filled idyllic park fraught with musical fountains and at the center, stood an edifice of the great Muslim hero, sultan Mohammad Dipatuan Kudarat.

Indeed, the New Capitol brings forth new optimism of foregoing a niche for this once idle province as one of the region’s lucrative investment and tourist destinations.

The province abounds with waterfalls and hot springs, which provide ample opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Another event to look forward to its Kalimudan Festival every November. Here the town celebrates its foundation anniversary by holding parades, horse fights, trade fair, and sports competitions.

Come and visit the Province's pride of Sultan Kudarat!

Sultan Kudarat governor suspends town mayor for more than a year

SUPPORTERS. Supporters of Isulan Mayor Marites Pallasigue gather for a prayer-rally outside the town hall on June 14, 2023 after the Sultan Kudarat provincial board recommended her suspension. The mayor was ordered suspended on Monday, June 26, 2023.

Isulan municipal government

GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines – The vice mayor of a town in Sultan Kudarat took his oath as acting mayor on Tuesday, April 23, weeks after the province’s governor suspended the municipality’s chief executive for more than a year.

Isulan Vice Mayor Arnold Armada took his oath as acting mayor four days after Mayor Marites Pallasigue received a March suspension order from Sultan Kudarat Governor Pax Ali Mangudadatu. The governor suspended her for 15 months without pay.

The Pallasigues are known political foes of the Mangudadatus, a local political clan that opposed the mayor’s ticket in the 2022 elections.

It was not the first time for Mangudadatu to suspend Pallasigue based on complaints for alleged negligence, dereliction of duty, irregularities in duty, and conduct harmful to public service. In June 2023, the governor suspended her for 60 days based on the recommendation of the provincial board.

With Armada assuming the post of the town mayor, Isulan Councilor Carlo Apiado also took his oath as acting vice mayor.

The period of suspension gives Pallasigue only a few days left in her term to serve when she returns to office in June 2025.

Mangudadatu’s Administrative Order No. 12-2024, suspending Pallasigue for the second time , was a penalty in connection with administrative cases filed against the mayor before the provincial board, said provincial administrator Jimmy Andang on Monday, April 22.

The provincial government said the 15-month suspension includes a penalty of six months for the initial offense in one administrative case, six months for a second offense in another case, and three months for a third case.

Upon the recommendation of the provincial board, Mangudadatu ordered the mayor’s suspension on March 25.

The suspensions will be served successively based on a resolution of the provincial board, Andang said.

The suspension order was received by the mayor’s office on Friday, April 19, according to Pallasigue’s husband Dominador, former mayor of Isulan, in a Facebook post.

On June 26, 2023,  Mangudadatu suspended Pallasigue for 60 days based on the recommendation of the provincial board which heard the three administrative cases filed that year by Armada, Apiado, town councilors Jenalyn Mejia, Moises Dolar, Marvin Dalanon, Darlene Lama, and several barangay chairpersons.

In their complaints, they blamed Pallasigue for the delay in the construction of a new municipal hall building. They also alleged that she did not submit copies of her executive orders to the office of the provincial governor.

Clash of families

Pax Ali is the son of Governor Mariam Mangudadatu of Maguindanao del Sur in the Bangsamoro region and Suharto, the former governor of Sultan Kudarat, a province in the Soccsksargen region.

In 2019, the mayor’s husband was convicted of two counts of graft by the Sandiganbayan and sentenced to a maximum of eight years in prison for each charge.

In a 13-page ruling issued on July 19, 2019, the 5th Division of the Sandiganbayan stated that Dominador failed to present compelling arguments in his appeal, affirming his guilt under the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

The charges against the ex-mayor were related to his decision to demote and dismiss Elias Segura Jr., the municipal planning and development coordinator, in 2007.

Interestingly, Segura ran for mayor of Isulan in the May 2022 elections, with Armada as his running mate, but they were defeated by the wife of Dominador.

Segura and Armada are part of the Kapamilya political alliance led by the Mangudadatus. – Rappler.com
