Royal Rajasthan Tour with Tiger (Ranthambore) Tour

Royal Rajasthan Tour with Tiger (Ranthambore)

Despite a poor start with a very bad choice of hotel in Delhi (Radison Blu Dwarka) and the need to change driver, the few hiccups during the tour were fixed quickly and professionally by World Travel Experience staff. Every day of the tour presented a diverse and informative look into life in modern and historic Rajasthan. Our local guides were on the whole well trained, informative and entertaining, maybe recommend less of the "hard sell" at the local "Artisan" shops that were part of every local tour. The highlight of the tour was a overnight stay at Sardargarh Fort.

Golden Triangle Tour With Tiger Safari All Included

Something really neat to do every day with some of the things out of this world...Like elephant ride up elephant ramps to 400 year old Amber Fort in Jaipur, seeing tigers on two different safaris at Ranthambore and daybreak at Taj Mahal that looked like a ghost or hologram floating on the horizon. Car and driver for 7 days, English speaking guides where needed. Good breakfasts and decent accommodations. .I especially liked the one at Ranthambhore. The guide that gave the tour of old Delhi felt like a friend and he made this part surprisingly enjoyable Yay Khushal! I met Sanjeev Paul, The owner of Fragrance of Taj and liked him.

Tiger Safari and Agra Taj Mahal Tour Starts from Jaipur ends in Delhi - 3 Days 2 Nights

After volunteering my friend and I took the Taj Mahal and Ranthambore Park tour. An air conditioned van picked us up at our homestay. The guide Raj was with us the entire time. Along the way we stopped at historical temples. The hotels were very nice. All had air conditioning and comfy beds (equivalent of a Hampton inn or Holiday inn in the USA.) The Taj Mahal is breathtaking and we had a great guide who not only told us the history and pointed out architectural details, but also knew where and how to get the best photos. Ranthambore Park is amazing. The Jeep safari was so much fun! We didn’t see a tiger on our tour, but the Jeep right in front of us did! We did see so many animals! Wild pigs, antelopes, monkeys, and many beautiful birds. Along the whole tour our guide took us to many interesting places to stop and eat (we didn’t want to stop at the western style restaurants, but preferred local food.) and we also got to visit shops and things. It really was an amazing time. We didn’t have to worry about a single thing and got dropped at the airport for our flight home. I would really recommend volunteering through VWI as well as taking one of their amazing tours! I can’t wait to go back and do the Varanasi tour next!

Essence of Rajasthan & Tiger - 11 Days Tour

Essence of Rajasthan & Tiger - 11 Days

We hired Rajasthan Tour by car and driver for our 11 days tour of Rajasthan They offered us a free upgrade to a very comfortable and safe car - Toyota Corolla Altis, along with a very professional driver Mr Akash, who sadly had to interrupt the tour due to unforeseen circumstances. Mr Neeraj provided us immediately with another driver, Mr Mithun, and both did an excellent job. Our driver was always on time and very flexible to accommodate our requests, he also arranged stops for lunch or simply a tea. Mr Neeraj and his team are very reliable and professional.

Bandhavgarh Kanha Pench Tour Tour

Bandhavgarh Kanha Pench Tour

Our family had a customized tour that included all three national parks for tiger safaris as well as the traditional golden triangle tour. We had 2 different drivers during the tour that picked us up at the airport or drove us to the next location. The drivers were always early, extremely friendly and helpful, and the cars were immaculate. We stayed at six different hotels that were picked out for us. They were all very nice and I would stay at them again. The guides at each location were very knowledgeable and friendly. The company itself stayed in contact with me throughout the trip to make sure I did not need anything. I would highly recommend this company. This tour was much more flexible and convenient than participating in a group tour where everyone has to keep up with a group pace.

Bumdrak Trek with Taktsang Monastery Tour

  • Hiking & Trekking

Bumdrak Trek with Taktsang Monastery

To have wonderful memories is an asset to be invested in ones life as life itself is a matter of time. I thank the World Tour Plan agent for gifting me a package of unforgettable experience of trekking to Bumdark Monastery. I will always remember their hospitality and the breath taking beauty of Bhutan. I love exploring places and trekking and in particular the trek to Bumdark was something that still makes my body crave for more. My journey to an elevation of 3800 meters above sea level, feasting on the pristine environment and walking around the crown of mountains, decorated with colourful flags gave me the feeling of exploring heaven. It was a six hours walk from the road end point and most of the heavy loads ere taken care by the mules. After reaching the Bumdark Monastery i came to know that the cliff i was looking was the cliff of million dakinis as believed by the locals. The camping site was majestic with carpet of green overlooking the mountains and valleys, colourful prayer flags praying for sentient beings, I didn't understand what the feeling was but it was more than just ecstasy to see the beauty with spiritualistic gaze. We camped there for three days exploring even higher heights . We visited another sacred site called 'Druethey' meaning crematorium. The faith in bhutanese people to believe in certain rocks and trees as sacred was the reason why i got an opportunity to completely change my view. After camping for three days we finally descended down to visit the infamous Taktsang Monastery known as the Tiger's Nest. It was a wonder, a master piece architecture that nestled on the face of the cliff. I was baffled by the site on which the monastery was constructed. Bhutanese consider this site as one of the most important pilgrimage site as this was the spot on which Guru Rimpoche arrived ridding on a flying tigress and maybe it is this faith that is the foundation for the strong hold of the monastery despite being on a precarious location. Lastly I would like to thank my guide Chencho and World Tour Plan for making all the necessary arrangements and for the courtesy that i will never be able to repay. I have nothing to regret for as those memories are far more worthy than the price I Paid for. Treks are usually pleasing to eyes but what I saw was something that requires more than eyes to see, the faith.

From Delhi: Golden Triangle Private Tour with Ranthambore

it was a mixture of an adventures and historical tour package where i had an adventure in ranthambore national park by taking a safari ride and i had an amazing visit to the Taj Mahal and other monuments in Agra. Delhi is a crowded place to travel but it is worth to travel , building in Delhi are very old but still glow like a new one. Jaipur is a place where i found too many monuments and it is also known as the name of pink city. it needs two days to visit properly and i did that. Well designed tour package who love adventure and history.

Amazing India with beach relax on Heavenly Andamans

Total tour arrangements is highly rated since we had a very professionally organized tour with a fantastic driver. One of the most important things was security and clean rooms and that factor was definitely fulfilled. Tiger safari was a success, we saw a beautiful tiger and took plenty of amazing pictures. We loved India and got a deep insight into their culture having met lots of local interactions with the local people and also thanks to our driver who saw us real life of Indian people as well as villages. We love this tour.

14 Days Golden Triangle Tours with 3 Renowned National Park of Tigers (ALL INCLUSIVE) Tour

14 Days Golden Triangle Tours with 3 Renowned National Park of Tigers (ALL INCLUSIVE)

We were very confused because family wants to take 10 days tours and my plan is that I will take 14 days tour then we recently had the opportunity to go on the 14 Days Golden Triangle Tours with 3 Renowned National Parks of Tigers and I must say it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I landed in Delhi to the last day of the tour, everything was well organized and taken care of by the tour company. The tour started with the Golden Triangle, covering Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. Our tour guide Mr.Hemender Singh was knowledgeable and provided interesting insights into the history and culture of each city. The highlight of the Golden Triangle was, of course, the visit to the magnificent Taj Mahal. It was truly a sight to behold and I was in awe of its beauty. Next, we headed to Ranthambore National Park, one of the most renowned tiger reserves in India. The safari experience was amazing as we were able to spot several tigers and other wildlife in their natural habitat. The park is well maintained and our guide made sure we didn't miss any of the important sightings. The accommodation at the resort was luxurious and the staff was very hospitable. We then moved on to Bandhavgarh National Park, famous for its high density of tigers. The game drives here were equally thrilling and we were lucky enough to spot a tiger with her cubs. The landscape of the park was breathtaking and we also saw a variety of other animals like deer, monkeys, and birds. The last stop of the tour was Kanha National Park, another tiger reserve known for its conservation efforts. We were able to witness the beauty of the park and its inhabitants during our game drives. The highlight of this park was spotting the elusive and rare white tigers, which was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Throughout the tour, the accommodations were top-notch and the food was delicious. The tour company had taken care of all the necessary arrangements, making it a hassle-free experience for us. Our tour guide was friendly, accommodating, and had a great knowledge of the wildlife and the parks. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore the Golden Triangle and witness the majestic tigers in their natural habitat. The tour was well-planned, the itinerary was well-balanced, and the experiences were truly unforgettable. It was an all-inclusive tour, which made it even more convenient and hassle-free. I would definitely go on this tour again and would recommend it to my friends and family.all team nature was good they were support anytime.Mr.Hemender Singh Opreate whole tour and also our Team. Thanks................

This 11 day tour of India was an incredible experience! My husband and I were able to explore India’s diverse wildlife, from the majestic tigers of Ranthambore to the exotic birds of Bharatpur. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and patient, and he made sure that we had a safe and enjoyable experience. Tiger Safari Reviews

We had a great time in India. The tour manager Mr. Amit was very responsive to all my questions and issues prior to the trip and was waiting for us to greet us at the first hotel. Our driver Mr. Vikram was great too. He was very professional and was always on time waiting for us each day. We absolutely loved our local guide in Jaipur. He was so professional, knowledgeable and quick that we felt we were very well taken care of. Now here’s the reason I can’t give 5 stars to this tour. It was the hotel in Jaipur and the local guide in Delhi. The hotel was not up to the standard of 3 stars at all. The bathroom was disgusting, moldy and gross. They called us around 10pm asking us to order room service both nights we stayed. It was the most horrible service that I have ever experienced at any hotels around the world. Now the local guide in Delhi, he made us decide to say goodbye after 3 hours. We never had a problem tipping people at all until the rickshaw ride (which was included in the tour). It was such a turn off moment for us when the guide asked us to tip them 200 for a 200 ride. He was also on the personal phone calls a lot, which made us feel that he really didn’t want to be there at all for us. We had to call it a day.
Pushpendre our guide was extremely helpful polite and informative He was keen to accommodate our needs and explain any issues we did not understand He was always pointing out things we may find interesting and to stop for photos We were very impressed by his driving skills Overall he enhanced our enjoyment of the trip Maureen and Alexandra

The Royal Bengal Tiger is one of the flagship species as not only is it the apex predator of the very forests that thrive here, but it is also the biggest cat among its brothers. National Parks in India varies with varying tropics and landscapes. We have the dry deciduous forest of Ranthambore National Park in the western part of India while the evergreen Sal forest of Kanha National Park thrives in Central India. Corbett National Park is unique as it rests in the foothills of the Great Himalayan Range, making it an awe-stunning frame to capture. Exclusive Tiger Safaris in India

On trails that resonate his roar...

At Tiger Safari India it is our endeavor to provide you with the best tiger safari holidays in India that have learning, adventure, and unlimited memories. We encourage you to store your experiences in form of videos and still photos which you will fondly go over at a later stage in life with friends, families, and your future generations.

While it is easy to capture people, landscapes, and monuments, capturing wildlife involves certain dynamics. The wildlife documentaries by channels are made with painstaking efforts covering months of filming in unhostile terrain, expensive equipment, special permissions from the authorities, weeks of post-production, and a great deal of resources. The end result is a dream setup. But this is not what you always see when you are on a tiger safari .

The videos below are shot by our team during a safari using a regular video camera, in a regular safari vehicle, no tripods, no extra permissions, and importantly during a 3-night stay in a national park. This is how you see tigers during a wildlife safari .

Tiger safaris in India actually happen throughout the year, but it is recommended to plan a safari tour between the cooler months of October and March. Each and every National Park in India has dedicated tiger safari zones that remain open to the public in longer durations.

It is important to plan your tiger safaris in India a good five months in advance, as it will give top tiger tour operators, like Tiger Safari India , ample time to prepare the best possible trip for you.

The Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Ranthambore National Park and Jim Corbett National Park are the four most visited and most popular tiger reserves. Pugdundee Safaris

Redefining the Indian Safari Experience

A luxurious melody of sustainable living.

tiger tours and travels

Pugdundee Safaris is recognized as one of India's leading responsible safari companies. With seven intimate jungle lodges in Central India and many bespoke wilderness experiences it presents the very best of the Indian subcontinent wildlife & hospitality. Between 2009 and 2022, we have been awarded for our excellence in wildlife safaris, our commitment to sustainability, our experienced naturalists and our pioneering mobile safari initiative.

Pugdundee is a Hindi word meaning a foot trail commonly used by humans and animals, this word is popularly used for such beaten paths in the Indian jungles. We continuously strive to deliver the best possible guest experience, while still integrating the conservation of jungles and the people living around. We are motivated by the hope of reaching out to people in the remotest areas of our country, as we believe that they are the front-runners of wildlife conservation. However, maybe just a drop in the ocean we consider that we are making a significant contribution to wildlife conservation and rural economy wherever our lodges are.

Driven by the love of Indian jungles we made an unplanned humble beginning in 1986, with a small-tented camp at Panna. Between 2007 -2010, two more lodges were setup and it was not until the year 2011 that they were all put together under a common umbrella. Today, Pugdundee Safaris is run by a passionate team of wildlifers and hospitality professionals with a team of over 300 people committed in providing an incredible wildlife experience. The team includes naturalists, nature guides, boatmen, trackers and a marketing team based in Delhi.

Besides its mainstay of running wildlife lodges, Pugdundee Safaris has been keenly engaged in conservation and community development activities. At Pugdundee we believe local people hold the future of the forests in their hands and can either help protect or destroy them. If we wish to conserve our forests, we must look after the needs of local people by helping to improve their ability to earn livelihoods. Our lodges set mostly in remote locations away from regular tourism hubs help ensure that the benefit of eco-tourism is distributed far and beyond.

Our Eco Wildlife Lodges

Our lodges are nestled in the large forested estates in the most pristine locations away from regular tourism hubs, yet close enough to offer easy access to the national parks. Offering an unparalleled Indian Safari experience, they are the epitome of luxury, comfort & unimagined indulgence.

2022 is the Year of the Tiger: Here are 15 places to see them ethically in the wild

A large tiger in Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India

With the Tiger King, Joe Exotic, currently serving a 22-year sentence for murder for hire and animal abuse, and fewer than 3,900 tigers left in the wild worldwide, tiger tourism is at a crossroads. Those who dream of seeing these gracious and elegant cats in their natural habitat are more motivated than ever, while the world's consciousness has been raised about what constitutes humane treatment of one of the most revered species on Earth.

There's no time like the present to see them -- especially since the Year of the Tiger in the Chinese lunar calendar begins on Feb. 1, 2022.

Of all the big cat species, tigers have perhaps been the most drastically affected by a host of issues, from hunting and poaching to climate change and loss of habitat, with the result being that three of the original nine tiger subspecies are already extinct.

Of the six subspecies remaining, two -- the Sumatran and South China -- are now listed as critically endangered. In fact, no South China tiger has been seen in the wild in more than two decades and fewer than 100 remain in zoos.

Want more travel news and advice? Sign up for TPG's daily newsletter .

While it's tempting to want to visit tigers in private wildlife preserves like the now-closed facility featured in the "Tiger King" documentary, it's important to understand that by doing so you're supporting a poorly regulated industry where animals are frequently subject to abuse.

When considering a visit to any zoo, check that it has been accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums , which requires that zoos meet strict qualifications for best practices regarding quality of habitat, cleanliness and veterinary care, and also participate in worldwide conservation initiatives.

"Outside of safaris in national parks located in South Asia and Russia, there is simply no truly ethical way to see a tiger. While tigers in major metropolitan zoos are well cared for, and often arrive as rescue animals, the same can't be said of most so-called rescue habitats or exotic animal parks, much less tiger encounter experiences in Asia," says Jeff Greenwald, executive director of Ethical Traveler, a nonprofit organization which seeks to use the economic benefits of tourism to protect human rights and the environment.

Noting examples such as the Thai Buddhist petting temple, which lost more than half of its 147 tigers to a virus, Greenwald says it's important to support only the zoos and other highly respected and rated institutions recognized for providing high-quality care. "If you are compelled to see a live tiger and can't afford a big trip to India, Nepal or Russia, see one in a legitimate zoo – like the Bronx or San Diego Zoo," says Greenwald. "Otherwise, ask yourself: Am I willing to have a tiger captured, drugged or caged so that I can take a picture of it?"

There are bright spots, though, in the midst of this darker reality, with the numbers of Bengal and Siberian tigers both increasing over the past decade. Along with those rising numbers have come numerous positive developments in tiger tourism, including better regulation and infrastructure improvements in several of the world's best tiger habitats. The result: Visitors have a better chance of seeing — and photographing — a tiger, without causing harm in the process.

Here, then, are 15 of the best — and most ethical — places to see tigers in the wild.

1. Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh, India

tiger tours and travels

Known as India's "Tiger State," Madhya Pradesh is home to more than 70% of the world's wild tigers, making the state a magnet for those intent on a tiger sighting. More than 2,226 Bengal tigers inhabit this region, considerably upping your chances of seeing a tiger, especially if you hit more than one park.

Of Madhya Pradesh's 50 tiger reserves, Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the best for tiger safaris.

2. Satpura National Park and Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, India

Connected to other Indian wildlife parks by wildlife corridors, Satpura National Park is part of the largest tiger habitat in the world. Unlike most tiger reserves, Satpura offers numerous safari options beyond jeep tours, including touring the park by boat and on foot. In addition, deer, gaur and other wildlife graze the park's broad meadows and crocodiles sun themselves on the banks of slow-moving rivers.

3. Kanha and Pench national parks, Madhya Pradesh, India

If the dense and vine-draped forests of Kanha National Park and Pench National Park look straight out of "The Jungle Book ," they actually are — author Rudyard Kipling is said to have set his 1894 book in the area, including mention of the nearby city of Seoni. Interestingly, Kipling himself never actually visited the area, though he grew up in Mumbai (then known as Bombay) and spent some years working as a journalist in other parts of India, so he knew the country well. In addition to the jungle habitats, Kanha features expansive meadows where it's easier to see tigers when they step into the open. For the deepest experience of tigers in Kanha and other central Indian parks, see them through the eyes of a local tour guide experienced in wildlife management, such as a trip organized by Wilderness Travel .

4. Kaziranga National Park, Assam, India

tiger tours and travels

A trip to Kaziranga National Park in India isn't just about the tigers, since these lush meadows are just as well known for their population of one-horned rhinoceros, which make up close to two-thirds of the world's population. Still, there are 111 Bengal tigers here in a fairly dense area, making it a favorite for tiger-spotting. Elephants and leopards up the fun factor as well.

5. Bandipur National Park, Karnataka, India

Spanning the lush valleys of the Kabini and Moyar rivers, Bandipur National Park shelters some 109 tigers at last count. Boasting one of the highest densities of tigers per acre, Bandipur also offers wildlife photographers a wealth of other options, from Indian elephants and sloth bears to more than 200 species of birds.

6. Melghat Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra, India

Situated in the Satpura mountains near the hill town of Chikhaldara, 890-square-mile Melghat Tiger Reserve is one of India's largest tiger parks. More than 60 tigers roam the banks of the Tapti River and its tributaries. Visitors often combine a safari in Melghat with a visit to Chikhaldara and the 13th-century Mughal fortress of Gawilgarh.

7. Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan, India

tiger tours and travels

Once the royal hunting grounds of the maharajahs of Jaipur, Ranthambore National Park lures visitors with its romantic history along with its wildlife. While the park was relatively small when first established in 1955, it's been expanded over the years to 1,334 square miles, making it India's largest tiger park. Ranthambore is one of India's more popular tiger parks both due to its location in attraction-rich Rajasthan and for its high chances of tiger-spotting. Don't miss the ruins of Ranthambore Fort, built between the 10th and 16th centuries, high on a rocky butte and affording astonishing views.

8. Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand, India

Called Hailey National Park when it was established in 1936 and renamed for a noted big game hunter and tiger conservationist, Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest national park. It was here in 1973 that Corbett founded Project Tiger, now the National Tiger Conservation Authority, which played a powerful role in allowing so many of India's tigers to survive today. More than 230 tigers live in this national park which, unlike most others, has facilities for overnight stays, increasing your chances of a tiger sighting.

9. Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, Bhutan

When the Bhutanese government launched its first tiger count in 2015, the country's tiger population stood at 103, a number the government has proposed to double over the next decade. While Bengal tigers roam across much of the densely forested mountainous country, Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park is one of the best places to see them, along with red pandas, golden langurs and rare clouded leopards.

10. Royal Manas National Park, Bhutan

Home to fewer than 30 critically endangered Bengal tigers, Royal Manas National Park was recognized by the World Wildlife Fund in 2020 for more than doubling its tiger population from just 12 tigers in 2008. Connected at its southern edge with India's Manas Tiger Reserve and at its northern edge with Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park, Royal Manas greatly expands the territory over which the tigers can wander.

11. Sunderban National Park, Bangladesh

More than 200 Bengal tigers live in this swampy wetlands preserve in southwestern Bangladesh on the border with India. Canoe safaris are the transport of choice in Sunderban National Park, since its jungle-shrouded rivers are easier to navigate by boat than by vehicle, and the tigers are particularly entertaining to watch thanks to their penchant for swimming.

12. Bardia National Park, Nepal

tiger tours and travels

Nepal can boast one of the best tiger success stories, with the population almost doubling over the past decade. At least 235 tigers live in the country's five national parks, with Bardia National Park having the most with a population of approximately 80. In Bardia, you have a choice between a walking safari and a jeep safari. Opt for a full-day rather than half-day trip to increase your chances of seeing one of the park's resident tigers — but you'll feel just as lucky if you see one of the park's wild elephants or one-horned rhinos.

13. Chitwan National Park, Nepal

More accessible than Bardia thanks to its location near Nepal's southern border with India, Chitwan National Park has seen its conservation efforts pay off with the tiger population increasing to 235. The park's one-horned rhinoceros population is another success story, up to almost 700 from a low of 100 in the late 1960s. Even if you don't spot a tiger, a visit to Chitwan is worthwhile for a chance to watch these prehistoric-looking beasts.

14. Durminskoye Forest Reserve, Russia

This section of the taiga forest in far eastern Siberia, home to the last remaining Siberian tigers as well as rare Amur leopards, is top on the list for big cat aficionados determined to see the rarest of the rare. Remote is an understatement for this wild region, best explored as part of an organized Siberian wildlife tracking tour through a reputable outfitter such as Wild Voyager or Naturetrek .

15. Zov Tigra National Park, Russia

With a name that translates as "call of the tiger," Zov Tigra National Park defines its existence as the last refuge of the endangered Siberian or Amur tiger, the largest of all the big cats. Only 500 of these magnificent cats remain in the world, and seeing them requires joining a responsible tiger expedition best suited to the more adventurous traveler. Even so, expedition organizers warn that travelers have a 1 in 8 chance of seeing one of these elusive cats, which prefer the cover of the region's dense forests.

When you think of tiger tourism, you might remember the release of Tiger King last March. If you remember anything from the show, it might be Joe Exotic and his countless attempts to obtain and profit from big cats, including tigers. The conservation and animal welfare issues with Joe Exotic’s Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park weren’t really shown in the Netflix original series.

That’s right, petting tigers and taking selfies with them might make you happy and possibly up your Tinder profile, but the damage to these big cats and the conservation of this endangered species could be irreversible. If you’re wondering how you can help and still observe tigers ethically, I’ve broken it all down here.

About tigers

First, it’s important to remember that tigers aren’t actually snuggly animals in the wild like they appear to be in captivity. They are solitary animals, which unfortunately makes them a big gain for hunters looking for a trophy or to sell on the black market as body parts for traditional Chinese medicine. They’re elusive and scarce, making a sighting a lot more prized.

Tigers are also massive and the largest of all Asian big cats. There are around 3,900 tigers left in the world, according to the latest census. Female tigers give birth to two to four cubs every two years.

Tiger subspecies

Before the 20th century, there were 8 subspecies of tiger. Three became extinct during the 20th century, and the five remaining subspecies are at risk.

  • Bengal : Sometimes called Indian tigers, Bengal tigers are the most common tiger and make up about half of all the wild tiger population. Over the centuries, Bengal tigers have become an important part of Indian tradition and lore. On average, a Bengal tiger lives to be 8 to 10 years old and can weigh on average up to 500 pounds.
  • Indochinese : This subspecies of tigers are also known as “Corbett Tiger” and inhabit a small region of Southeast Asia. In 2004, the Indochinese tiger was split from the Malayan tiger and considered a different subspecies. It’s a relatively small species and has a darker orange coat with narrower dark stripes.
  • Sumatran : It’s estimated that less than 400 Sumatran tigers are left in the wild today. Distinguished by their heavy black stripes, their rapid population decline is caused by accelerated deforestation and rampant poaching. While all tiger subspecies are at risk, Sumatran tigers are critically endangered.
  • Siberian : These giant tigers are the world’s largest cats. Siberian tigers live primarily in Eastern Russia in the birch forests, but some can be found in China and North Korea. Siberian tigers can weigh up to 700 pounds.
  • Malayan : These tigers are the most recently recognized subspecies of tigers and are the national animal of Malaysia. Malayan tigers were split from the Indochinese tiger subspecies in 2004. There is limited information about Malayan tigers, but they are thought to be smaller than the tigers living in India.

Quick look at tigers

  • Lifespan — In the wild, tigers live on average to be between 8 and 10 years old. Historically, tigers live longer in captivity, with lifespans of 14 to 16 years. The oldest tiger in history was named Flavio. Flavio was rescued from 13 years of doing circus shows, and he lived to the age of 25 years old in captivity.  But, do not equate longer life to mean better quality of life. Captivity eliminates natural causes of death for the most part.
  • Weight — As you might expect, males tend to be larger and females smaller when it comes to tiger weight. On average, tigers weigh between 150 and 700 pounds. The largest tiger on record is an 845-pound Siberian.
  • Diet — Tigers are carnivores and eat mostly large prey like deer, wild boar, and even elephant calves. They take down their prey by lunging at the animal’s neck and holding on tight with their powerful jaws.
  • Conservation status — Each subspecies of tiger is at risk, classified as endangered on the Red List of Threatened Species published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

About tiger habitats

Tigers can be found in a diverse array of habitats, including rainforests, grasslands, savannas, and mangrove swamps. But, the habitats available to tigers are diminishing, with about 93% of historical tiger lands having disappeared . Land once inhabited by tigers has been diminished due to the expansion of human activity.

Fun facts about tigers

  • Tigers are the largest felines in the world amongst wild cats. They’re also the third largest carnivore on land behind polar bears and black bears.
  • Tigers are nocturnal creatures and are often solitary.
  • Tiger cubs are born blind, relying on their mother for at least a few weeks as a newborn. Female cubs are the sole provider for cubs until up to two years after birth.
  • While tigers are solitary, they are also playful. You can see them scum and play in the water.
  • Tigers can sprint up to 60 kilometers per hour and can climb trees, although they seldom do.
  • Tigers can roar, but they do not purr.
  • No two tigers have the same stripes. Just like our fingerprints or a snowflake’s design, each is unique.
  • A tiger’s tail is about 3 feet long and helps them maintain balance.
  • The big padded paws of tigers make it easier for them to silently sneak up on prey.

Why are tigers endangered?

The four biggest threats that endanger the tiger species include poaching, hunting, tourism and palm oil.

  • Poaching — While the tiger has long been hailed in Indian and Chinese lore, Traditional Chinese Medicine has kept the illegal trade of tiger bones and body parts vibrant. In addition to illegally trading body parts, the skin of tigers is highly profitable for poachers, making the thrill of catching a tiger more enticing with a high price tag.
  • Hunting — While poaching is hunting, there is another level to hunting tigers. Many big game hunting enthusiasts see big carnivores like tigers as a “bucket list kill.”
  • Tourism — By visiting places that have tigers available for petting and selfies, you are directly supporting these tourist traps indirectly supporting the speed breed of tigers. Female tigers in these situations are forced to breed more frequently than in the wild, by having their cubs removed from their care right after birth. This speeds up the gestation period in females.
  • Palm oil — 90% of Sumatran tiger habitat has been lost thanks to palm oil plantations. You can stop this spread by not purchasing palm oil and speaking out about the damage the rapidly growing industry is causing to tiger habitat and the rainforest as a whole.

Common tiger tourism activities

There are two main tiger tourism activities: petting tigers and tiger selfies. Both of these are extremely damaging to tiger conservation.

Petting tigers

In most cases, the tigers used for petting experiences are cubs that have been speed bred and removed from their mothers too soon. The constant flashing of camera lights can cause early cataracts in early developing eyes, and human interaction can also expose cubs to diseases. Young tigers often sleep during the day in the wild but often miss that chance in captivity. Usually nocturnal in the wild, they are forced to sleep in the evening. Once they grow past the age of petting, they are often sold on the black market for parts.

Tiger selfies

Remember when a bunch of men started using photos of them with tigers in their Tinder profiles? Yeah, that’s not cool. Most, if not all, of the photos taken like this are taken with a tiger that has been drugged to sit still. And when the tiger isn’t putting on a show for the selfie, it is caged alone.

Not only is a tiger selfie intentionally supporting this behavior from handlers, but also encourages the mistreatment of animals and implies that they only exist to serve humans’ entertainment.

Tiger tourism – where to see tigers in the wild

Tigers can be found in swamps, grasslands, and rainforests, meaning you can see a tiger in the wild in a variety of countries. From the Russian Far East to parts of North Korea, China, India, and Southwest Asia to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, there’s a chance you could see a tiger or two.

Madhya Pradesh, India

Madhya Pradesh is known as India’s “Tiger State” and is one of the 50 reserves in the country. There is one walking safari, the Satpura reserve, and all other safaris are conducted in Maruti Suzuki Gypsies (or Jeeps). You can book a safari ride for morning, afternoon and sometimes evening with the right local guide.

It’s suggested that you take at least four rides for the best chance to see a tiger. But, even if you don’t catch a tiger, there’s a good chance you’ll see other wildlife like deer, owls, eagles, gaur, langurs, macaques and if you’re lucky, a sloth or jungle cat.

For the most luck spotting a tiger, visit during the pre-monsoon months of April and May.

tiger tours and travels

Barcadia National Park, Nepal

The Barcadia National Park is located in the remote northwest of Nepal, and it’s the best spot to see one of the 80-odd tigers that call it home. Each lodge in the national park offers walking and 4WD safaris and while you can cover more ground riding around, you experience intimate wildlife viewings by walking.

In addition to the chance of seeing a tiger, you can also see rhinos, otters, crocodiles, wild elephants and five species of deer.

Although the Barcadia National Park is open year-round, the best times to see them would be the hot season by the river.

The Sundarbans, Bangladesh

The Sundarbans straddle India and Bangladesh and is the world’s largest mangrove forest. Although both sides are an adventure, The Sundarbans is better accessed from the Bangladesh side, where you’ll find deeper access and maximize your chance of seeing a tiger.

To get to The Sundarbans, you hop aboard a multi-day boat tour from Khulna. Eating and sleeping occurs on the main tour boat, but you break into smaller groups and track tigers on foot or by smaller boats.

You’re most likely to spot a tiger in April and May, even though visiting in October through March may be more comfortable. In addition to tigers, you can also spot saltwater crocodiles, wild boar, langurs and many of the 260 bird species in the region.

Durminskoye Reserve, Russia

The Siberian tiger is found primarily in eastern Russia and northern China. Russia became the first country to grant full protection of tigers in 1965, and that act saved them from extinction.

The chance of spotting a tiger is pretty rare, though, and most tours are run like citizen science projects where guests spend their days tracking pug marks and snowmobiles and on foot. While tracking pug marks, you’ll set camera traps and review footage, all in contribution to the protection of the species.

In addition to the slim chance of seeing tigers, you can also see wolves, lynx, badgers, foxes and raptors, and in the summer you may even see an Asian black bear.

For the best conditions to track tigers, visit during the month of November through February.

Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan, India

Ranthambore National Park is 154 square miles of space where tigers can be found roaming freely through the park. The park is composed of dry deciduous forest, brushland, rocky hills and some of the most beautiful ancient structures.

A fixed number of vehicles are permitted in the park for tracking both morning and afternoon. 40 gypsies and open-sided canters embark on tracking sessions each day. In addition to seeing tigers on the drives, you can also see deer, wild pigs, peacocks, leopards and sloth bears.

The peak months to visit are between October and December.

tiger tourism

Kerinci Seblat National Park, Sumatra, Indonesia

Kerinci Seblat National Park is the largest national park in Sumatra and has some of the healthiest populations of Indonesian wildlife like elephants, bears, tapirs, clouded leopards, gibbons and more tigers than can be found in all of Indonesia.

But, it won’t be easy to spot a tiger. Many visitors to the national park embark on the climb to Gunung Kerinci, which is the highest active volcano in Southeast Asia. You might see a tiger on your climb if you’re lucky, but do know it’s rare.

Chitwan National Park, Chitwan, Nepal

Chitwan National Park was the first national park in Nepal when it was founded in 1973. Before it was a national park, Chitwan was prime hunting grounds. Talk about a glow up.

In 1984 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is currently protected by the Nepali Army.

You can hop on a jungle safari or join a jungle walk for a chance to see a tiger in the wild. In addition, you could see wildlife like birds, deer, rhinos, crocodiles and monkeys.

Ultimate Tigers

Bandhavgarh national park, india.

4118964 1

Tigers are the world’s largest living cats. Few animals can evoke such a visceral feeling of fear and awe. Over the centuries, the tiger’s predatory prowess has become the source of legend—and the occasional inclusion of “man” in its diet has intensified this mystique. Today’s shrinking habitat, poaching and human overpopulation threatens them over most of their range.

Tigers are difficult to photograph in the wild—the reason so many images of these spectacular cats, used commercially and editorially, were taken at game farms. For our Ultimate Tigers photo shoot we have obtained, by government permit, special pro photography access to one of the world’s most impressive tiger reserves, India’s Bandhavgarh National Park. This is the same type of permit for comprehensive access that a film crew from BBC, National Geographic or Discovery Channel would have. The vast majority of visitors (99.95%) to the park will never have this experience!

4119196 1

Virtually all of India’s famous tiger parks are busy with tourists and are tightly controlled. Without our valuable permits, visitors arrive early in the morning at the park gate where they are assigned a prescribed zone and game drive route. Typical tourist vehicles must stay in their assigned zone with no deviations. The normal game drive lasts 3½ hours, the park closes midday for 3½ hours (strictly—no matter if you are viewing a tiger or not), and then reopens again for an afternoon game drive for another 3½ hours. With our permits, 3 of our 7 shooting days in the park will be route free and unrestricted.

190331 India DSC8600FJ

Bandhavgarh National Park has one of the highest tiger densities in the world. The park covers 168 square miles, predominated by sal forest combined with mixed deciduous/bamboo forest and broad expanses of grassland. Imposed across the skyline is an impressive plateau, crowned with the ancient Bandhavgarh fort—thought to be some 2,000 years old—rising more than 2,600 feet above the forest. There is no shortage of prey in the park for both the tigers and the less frequently seen leopards. Several species of ungulates, including chital (spotted deer), sambar, muntjac, nilgai, chinkara and chousingha are all on the big cat menu, as well wild boar. Other species we may encounter as we traverse the park include sloth bear, Indian fox, Hanuman (gray) langur and rhesus macaque—plus Indian jackal, jungle cat, mongoose, ratel, and more than 250 species of birds. Wild peacocks are frequently photographed displaying in their native forest habitat.

190331 India DSC9299

Our tiger quest may start by sighting huge fresh paw prints (spoor) in the roadway dust. Then we hear the snorts of deer and the chatter of langurs from the trees that betray the presence of these elusive cats. With palpable tension we wait in silence for this king of the forest and, hopefully, it saunters into view with hardly a glance at the human intruders. We are there in the dry season when most leaves are off the trees—making it easier to spot and photograph the big cats.

A trip to India’s great tiger parks is a peak experience for every nature photographer and a wonderful opportunity to explore one of Earth’s most intriguing wildlife habitats and photography destinations.

Compelling Reasons To Travel With Us

For those photographers who love shooting the world’s big cats a trip to photograph tigers in India is near the top of their bucket list. Our tiger photography tours provide exceptional access to the national parks in which we work. They are the “gold standard” of wild tiger photography tours.

Unparalleled Experience Joseph Van Os Photo Safaris has more than 25 years of experience offering photography tours in India. Our local trip logistics consultant comes from a long line of celebrated Indian conservationists—his grandfather, “the tiger man of India,” was a principal advocate of tiger preservation, while his father pioneered India wildlife ecotourism. With his help, our trips are carefully planned for the right place and the right time when tiger sightings are the best.

Tiger 16 04 03 O4R7346

Special All-Access National Park Permits With special national park permits, 3 of our 7 shooting days will be unrestricted and route free, allowing us to travel on any track—and in any direction—where and when tigers are seen, and permitting us to enter the park a short time before it opens to tourists (while animals by the roadway have not been disturbed) and to stay a little later than closing time to capture the best light at sunrise and sunset. We do not have to leave the park at midday on those permit days, allowing us to stay within the park, lingering at water holes when tigers are present, and from sunrise to sunset—up to 4½ more hours than the tourist vehicles.

4171114

Tigers—And A Whole Lot More With us you get 6 full shooting days and 2 additional half days of photography within the national park. (All tiger national parks in India are closed to all on Wednesday afternoons.)  We also enjoy another morning shoot prior to our return flight to Delhi. This schedule allows you many hours of productive tiger tracking as well as time to photograph many other intriguing wildlife species to enhance your tiger photo portfolio.

Accommodations Matter (A lot) We stay at just 1 location while we are in the field. There are no travel days to break up the rhythm of our shooting, allowing us to focus all of our attention on our photography. With the potential of long (and sometimes hot) days in the field, to get the most out of tiger sightings and early and late light, we can retreat to comfortable air-conditioned accommodations that provide a peaceful oasis and good food when we return either at a midday break or after sunset. Located just a 3-minute drive from the national park gate, our Jungle Lodge is built with minimal disturbance to the natural environment of the jungle and is managed with eco-friendly principles.

3314329

Great Transportation, Fewer Passengers On this trip there are only 2 photographers, a professional driver, and a local guide in each 4×4 vehicle. The drivers are excellent tiger trackers—many with years of experience. We travel from the airport to the national park via comfortable air-conditioned Toyota Innova station wagons.

When you choose our Ultimate Tigers photo tour you will appreciate our company’s 40 years of experience that make your trip comfortable, safe—and photographically productive!

Those participants using pro permits have an early breakfast and head to the park gate where they are allowed entry 15 minutes before the gate opens to all others—just prior to at sunrise.  Participants following the assigned game drive routes leave at the same time to get in queue for the morning route assignment, with lunch and break at the lodge. The potential for photography, tigers and especially other wildlife, is also quite good on the tourist tracks.

The entire group will be assigned national park tracks on Wednesday morning.  The national park is closed to all on Wednesday afternoons. Following lunch on Wednesday we have time to review and critique trip photos on our laptops, birdwatch around the lodge, or relax until dinner. (BLD)

Day 11 (April 9) In the morning we return to the park for a final morning of wildlife photography. Following lunch we drive to the airport and fly to Delhi later in the afternoon. Dayrooms are provided at an airport hotel. After dinner we transfer to the international terminal to catch onward flights for home. (BLD)

Testimonials

I very much appreciate the thought and effort that Photo Safaris puts into getting clients to the right place at the right time with the right kind of support: knowledgeable and experienced tour leaders, capable guides, comfortable lodgings, etc. Being relieved of the need to think about any of the logistical details allows me to concentrate on the reason for the trip: photography. — K. Andrews

Having been on this trip three previous times, I was thrilled with the number of different tigers we saw and were able to photograph. There are no guarantees with wildlife and previous trips did not yield the same results. I know that Photo Safaris attempts to get the best results by using the best guides. They didn’t disappoint. —E. Goff

Not included are airfare or other transportation from your home to the trip staging location, airport departure taxes, insurance, alcoholic beverages, and bar expenses (plus bottled water and soft drink expenses on international tours outside of North America), tips and gratuities to local guides, phone calls, passport or visa expenses, laundry, or items of a personal nature. Rates are based on group tariffs; if the trip does not have sufficient registration, a small party supplement may be charged.

Most of our trips are priced in double occupancy (shared) accommodations. Single accommodation is available for a supplemental cost in many locations; see the pre-departure trip information or call our office for details. You will be charged the single supplement fee if you desire single accommodation or if you wish to have a roommate, but one is not available. In some remote locations, clients with single rooms are infrequently compelled to share a room due to circumstances beyond our control. In such cases, appropriate per diem refunds will be made reflecting the direct cost of the single room at the facility where clients are required to share. There is no additional single supplement fee on ship-based cruises if you request a roommate and one is not available.

Cost increases may occur unexpectedly due to rising costs of airfares, ground transport, fuel surcharges, accommodations, and currency fluctuations, among others. Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc. may be compelled to amend prices, and we reserve the right to do so without prior notice. An increase in trip prices shall not be sufficient grounds for any refund of funds paid for the trip other than as determined by the terms of our cancellation policy.

7. LOGISTICS Whenever possible, our trip participants are lodged in comfortable, modern hotels. We select among the best available accommodations but refrain from extravagance. Some interesting photographic destinations are far removed from modern amenities, however, and where necessary we will be accommodated in rustic country inns, cabins, or tented camps.

Meals are always a special part of our trips for the camaraderie they engender and the opportunity they provide to try new foods from different areas. Depending on the trip and specific locale, participants order restaurant meals from the full menu or, less frequently, table d'hôte. Some trips include picnic lunches in the field. Fruit juice for breakfast and coffee or tea is included with the meals. Soft drinks are included with meals on tours within North America. Participants are responsible for their own bar tab (including bottled water, soft drinks, as well as alcoholic beverages on tours outside of North America) at restaurant lunches and dinners.

Our itineraries are intended as examples only. Participants should allow for flexibility due to changes in weather, natural history or cultural events, or other logistical arrangements deemed necessary by Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc., or our leaders.

The second tour leader (and any subsequent additional leaders) listed for each trip on the website will be added as the group size warrants. If only one space remains on a trip, and logistics permit, we accept two people traveling together, even if it exceeds the trip maximum.

8. RESPONSIBILITY Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc. and/or their Agents act only as agents for the passenger (trip participant) in regard to travel including, but not limited to, sightseeing, meals, lodging, transportation, and all other services whether by railroad, motor coach, automobile, van, boat, ship or aircraft or any other conveyance, and they assume no liability for injury, damage, loss, accident, delay or irregularity which may be occasioned for any reason whatsoever, or through the acts, bankruptcy or default of any company or person engaged in conveying the passenger or in carrying out the arrangements of the trip.

They can accept no responsibility for losses or additional expenses due to delay, cancellations or changes in flights or other tour services, and by force majeure including sickness, weather, strike, war, volcanic eruption, terrorist acts, political unrest, quarantine, epidemics, pandemics and outbreaks, or other causes. All such losses or expenses will have to be borne by the passenger, as trip fees provide for arrangements only for the times and locations stated. Baggage is at the owner's risk entirely.

The right is reserved to 1) substitute hotels of similar category for those indicated and to make any changes in the itinerary or transport where deemed necessary, or caused by changes in flight schedules or equipment substitution; 2) cancel any trip prior to departure due to low enrollment, in which case full refund of the paid trip funds will be given, but Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc. is not responsible for any other trip preparation expenses such as penalized or non-refundable air tickets, visa fees, travel insurance premiums and medical related expenses; 3) At the company’s sole discretion, suspend or postpone any trip due to force majeure or disease outbreak in which case the trip may be rescheduled, or a refund issued less any non-refundable deposits paid to tour component providers on behalf of the passenger, or a travel credit given, but Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc. is not responsible for any other trip preparation expenses such as penalized or non-refundable air tickets, visa fees and medical related expenses; 4) substitute trip leader(s) for the leader(s) originally specified, in which case the substitution is not a basis for participant cancellation or refund other than provided by our normal cancellation policy; or 5) accept or retain any person as a member of any trip.

Trip prices are based on tariffs and exchange rates in effect at the time of publication and are subject to adjustment in the event of any change therein.

A signed Registration Form with the Enrollment Conditions and Release and Assumption of Risk sections must be returned by each participant prior to the commencement of the trip. Participation by any trip member will be declined in the absence of the signed Registration Form including the Release and Assumption of Risk section, with no trip fee refund. No modification to the Registration Form including the Release and Assumption of Risk section will be accepted.

Should Van Os Photo Safaris, Inc., or anyone acting on their behalf be required to incur attorney's fees and any costs to enforce this agreement, the enrolling trip participant(s) agree(s) to indemnify and hold them harmless for all such fees and costs. Like Jewels, Will Travel

Gem- and jewelry-themed tours and excursions mix treasure hunting with adventure and cultural experiences.

A color illustration of a hand holding a martini glass, a jeweler and elements related to travel, jewelry and mining.

Text by Amy Elliott

Last year, when Roberto Ruiz visited the Carbonera mine in Querétaro, Mexico, he cracked open a grapefruit-size piece of rhyolite with a hammer. When he looked inside, “it was like finding a fire fossil,” he said during a recent phone interview from his home in San Antonio. Inside was an orangey-red fire opal that he likened to a flame, forever preserved in the sphere of igneous rock.

Mr. Ruiz and his wife, Erika Rodriguez, are among the few people who have traveled to the mine, a desolate spot located in Carbonera in central Mexico, a destination that’s well off the beaten tourist track, some 20 miles from the nearest city. Their journey was especially unusual as neither is in the gem trade: Mr. Ruiz is a corporate attorney and Ms. Rodriguez works in digital marketing.

But they are among a growing number of travel enthusiasts seeking unusual, hyper-specific vacation experiences that offer an insider’s view of the gem and fine jewelry industries, and a number of businesses are responding to the demand accordingly.

Mr. Ruiz said the idea of visiting an opal mine was appealing for a few reasons, starting with his lifelong fascination with gemstones and minerals.

The mine’s remote location in the rocky, semidesert wilderness (where snakes and scorpions are not uncommon) was also compelling: Ms. Rodriguez said she and her husband are usually inclined toward travel focused on outdoor adventure, from hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in Peru to rock climbing around Krabi in southern Thailand.

“We had also gone to the American Museum of Natural History in New York and saw an opal from Querétaro, and Roberto is originally from there,” Ms. Rodriguez said. “We found out something that we didn’t even know existed and we became interested in learning how the opals are extracted — and meeting the people who were doing it.”

But a traveler cannot just show up at a mine and start digging. It requires a guide, someone well connected to the mine owners and well versed in what to expect: dirt and dust; lots of walking; the occasional explosion at the site; and, at times, security risks. Given their knowledge of the terrain, guides keep an ear to the ground for rumblings — both geological and political — and respond accordingly to keep travelers safe.

The couple arranged the trip through Carlos Torres, an acquaintance from New York who is a gemologist, commercial gem buyer and consultant. He had piqued their interest with tales of the mines he has visited, particularly on trips with his business partner, Laurent Massi, who has taught gemology at several institutions and now is the owner of the Neogem consultancy in Paris.

Mr. Torres and Dr. Massi have organized gem mining trips not just to Mexico, but also to destinations such as Colombia (for emeralds), Thailand (for rubies) and Brazil (for Paraiba tourmaline). Last fall, they started the Gem Odyssey , a business to structure similar gem-hunting expeditions as all-inclusive travel packages that start, on average, at about $3,700 per person, not including airfare.

Gem Odyssey itineraries are tailored to jewelry enthusiasts who are not industry professionals — offering plenty of education and explanation, while avoiding “inside baseball”-type industry talk. The trips typically span nine days, with at least three of those days spent at a mine site.

The founders say the schedules can be customized to include experiences such as tequila tastings or visits to local artisan markets; any given trip might include a mix of accommodations, with upscale hotels near the airports or central cities and more rustic facilities in the mining areas.

But his clients don’t come for the niceties, Mr. Torres said. “They like the idea of getting mud on their hands.”

And, he added, after receiving instruction in mining safety, they become part of the process: “They see the drilling, how the dynamite is used for extraction, and they get to experience breaking the stones and checking for gems.”

Dr. Massi, who also was on the phone interview with Mr. Torres, said that “witnessing the birth of a gemstone is not something anyone can do and see at home in their garden. We try to give them an experience, and see a part of a country, that they could not get access to on their own.”

Digging For Tourmalines

Perhaps it is not surprising, but gem- and jewelry-themed travel is a trend especially relevant to the tastes and inclinations of high-net worth individuals — people with at least $1 million in liquid assets — according to Milton Pedraza, the founder and chief executive of the Luxury Institute, a consultancy specializing in luxury consumer research with offices in New York and Florida.

Mr. Pedraza said the sophisticated traveler has “seen it, done it.” So, he said, when someone has the opportunity to access an exclusive experience in a far-flung part of the world, “it makes your life more unique,” he said,“and everybody wants to be seen as authentic, unique and genuine.”

The designer Pamela Hastry is connected to such clients through Morphée , her jewelry company in Paris, and the lectures that she regularly hosts in and around her hometown, Brussels. She also conducts private tours of Place Vendôme in Paris, a center for high jewelry, and of the Diamantkwartier, or Diamond Quarter, in Antwerp, Belgium, one of the jewelry industry’s oldest and most prominent diamond centers.

In November Ms. Hastry is planning to take a group to Namibia, in southern Africa, to discover the country’s beautiful tourmalines (while also making a stop at a mine that produces chrysocolla, an unusual blue-green type of chalcedony). Organized with Destination, a luxury travel agency in Belgium, the 10-day itinerary includes at least one night in a tent near one of the tourmaline mines (€8,986 or about $9,711, without airfare).

“You’re going to live — and dig — like a miner for a day and a half,” Ms. Hastry said.

Damien Van Bellinghen, the founder of Le Club des Etoiles, a business and social club in Brussels, has one of the 15 reservations for the Namibia trip. Mr. Van Bellinghen, who went on one of Ms. Hastry’s private tours of Antwerp’s diamond district, wrote in an email that he looked forward to discovering how gems are extracted, getting to know the miners and exploring the country through the lens of a jeweler.

“The types of trips that Pamela Hastry organizes plunge straight into the heart of where the most marvelous jewels come from,” he wrote. “Such visits can only be made if you are accompanied by someone who has ‘insider’ knowledge and, above all, who has the trust of the local people. And we’re lucky enough to enjoy it.”

The Royal Treatment

If you do find a gem during one of these mine trips, can it be used in a piece of jewelry? Both Ms. Hastry and Mr. Torres of the Gem Odyssey said that they could facilitate a purchase, although they noted that the item purchased would have to comply with international import/export regulations.

But some gem-loving travelers don’t want to dig for their treasures. They would rather a holiday centered on history, sightseeing and shopping for finished pieces of jewelry (with posh accommodations and amenities as a bonus).

“You can tour some cities very easily through the lens of the history of fine jewelry and jewelry-making,” said Camilla Davidson, who is head of destination management for Britain, France and Ireland at Red Savannah , a luxury travel agency in England. “And that would still enable you to see so many of the destination’s highlights.”

For example, the agency offers a tour of London called Couture and Crown Jewels, an extravagant option for jewelry enthusiasts with deep pockets ($550,000 for two people, without airfare). It offers a private tour of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London and dinner in its White Tower; a four-night stay at the Raffles London at the OWO; and tickets to a West End show. And it includes a $125,000 credit toward a jewelry purchase at Humphrey Butler, an antique and estate jeweler.

Ms. Davidson said she developed the package in response to the world’s fascination with British royalty and was inspired by the idea of connecting a visit to the Crown Jewels to an exclusive jewelry shopping experience.

Humphrey Butler and his namesake business were a natural fit for the itinerary, she said: “He has the most impeccable collection and he as an individual is completely charming, exceptionally discreet, and just great fun to be around.”

Jewels at Sea

For some jewelry collectors, a travel experience that plays to, or enhances, their level of connoisseurship, is most appealing.

“Whatever their interest is, they want to learn more,” said Mr. Pedraza, the luxury consumer specialist. “So they make an adventure or journey out of it.”

One such example might be the Spotlight on Fabergé package offered by Regent Seven Seas Cruises in collaboration with Fabergé, the Russian heritage workshop known for its bejeweled eggs, which in 2009 moved its headquarters in London.

The first such excursion aboard the Seven Seas Grandeur liner is scheduled for July. Josina von dem Bussche-Kessell, Fabergé’s creative director, explained that the cruise is designed for “clients who care about art and culture and would happily sit for an hour or so to learn about the history of Fabergé’s royal clients then and now.”

The Grandeur, which was launched in November, has its own 1,600-piece art collection, including a Fabergé egg in an ocean theme with blue guilloché enamel, diamonds and pearls, called “Journey in Jewels,” which was commissioned by Regent Seven Seas. (The meetings on the commission actually led to the cruise collaboration.)

The 11-day voyage is scheduled to depart from the Civitavecchia port in Rome and to include destinations such as the Sicilian city of Taormina; Ibiza, Spain; and Nice, France, ending in Monaco (from $12,999 per person, including airfare).

The programming is to include Fabergé expert-led lectures, screenings and master classes, as well as shore excursions attuned to the participants’ interests in the decorative arts. As Ms. von dem Bussche-Kessell sees it, such a floating symposium — a kind of sleepover camp on a luxury scale — effectively creates a community for people who share a common passion.

Mr. Pedraza said that was an important incentive for certain travelers: “They love to engage with the product while meeting people who are their peers and who come through trusted brands and curators.”

And the return home is just as important as the journey itself, especially with a glittering souvenir to show friends and family.

“You get to demonstrate your expertise,” Mr. Pedraza said, “The experience has made you an insider.”

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Barring a setback in the next four days, it seems likely that five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods will make his 26th appearance at Augusta National Golf Club this week.

Woods, 48, flew from Stuart, Florida to Augusta on Sunday and spent some time at the club's practice area with his caddie, Lance Bennett. Woods and Bennett worked together at the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club outside Los Angeles in February.

Augusta National Golf Club posted photos of Woods practicing Sunday on its X account.

It will be the first time Woods and Bennett have worked together at Augusta National. Woods' former caddie, Joe LaCava, who helped him win his fifth green jacket in 2019, is now working as Patrick Cantlay's full-time caddie.

This week, Woods will attempt to set a Masters record by making the cut for the 24th consecutive time. Last year, he made the 36-hole cut and tied Gary Player and Fred Couples but was forced to withdraw before the rain-delayed third round resumed after aggravating plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

In his last start, Woods was forced to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational during the second round because of illness. The 15-time major champion later confirmed that he was battling the flu. Woods also dealt with lower back tightness during that tournament.

Notah Begay III , Woods' former teammate at Stanford and a golf analyst for NBC Sports, said on a conference call last week that Woods was suffering from lower back problems.

"He's trying to formulate a strategy and approach that he can work within given the constraints that he's presented with -- and he's got some constraints," Begay said "He's got zero mobility in that left ankle and really has low-back challenges now, which he knew he was going to have."

Woods' appearance at the Genesis Invitational, which benefits his foundation, was his only appearance on the PGA Tour this season. Because of his inactivity, the former world No. 1 golfer is currently ranked 950th in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Woods had surgery on April 19, 2023 to address post-traumatic arthritis in his right ankle that was caused by injuries suffered in a February 2021 car wreck.

Woods played in a one-day pro-member tournament at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida, in early March. He reportedly played with Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, in the Bahamas before Woods and other PGA Tour policy board player directors met with PIF officials about a potential investment.

Since returning to professional golf after the car wreck, Woods has withdrawn or missed the cut in four of his six starts. His two finishes were a tie for 45th in the 2023 Genesis Invitational and a solo 47th in the 2022 Masters.

"For the past couple months, he's been trying to find a way to recover," Begay said. "He can play the golf. We always knew the question was going to be 'Can he walk the 72 [holes]?' That's still up in the air. But can he recover from one round to the next? That's the biggest question that I really don't know, and he's not going to know either until he gets out there and figures out whether the way he's prepared for this year's Masters is going to work for him."

Woods' last top-20 finish on the PGA Tour was a tie for ninth at the 2020 Farmers Insurance Open. He finished outside the top 20 in 14 consecutive tour starts, his longest drought as a professional, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

How Dangerous are Tigers?

Do you like Big Animals?  We collected ideas on the Best Places to see Hippos , Elephants , Giraffes , or Rhinos .

That is why wild animals respect them. But if a trainer, for example, stumbles and loses his position of power, it can become dangerous even for him. Also, to strange tigers, he would not dare to enter the cage. By the way, in the wilderness, animals only rarely attack humans. If, for example, a shark hurts a surfer, it is only because he mistakes him for a seal. You can see this because, unlike its usual prey, it does not eat it.

Nevertheless, some people can go into a tiger or lion cage without being attacked, for example, tamers in the circus. They know their animals well and are something like the leader.

For Tiger, a human being is a big animal. And when an animal is in its enclosure, the tiger wants to hunt it because he has an innate hunting instinct.

Approximately 100 people die every year due to attacks by tigers. Probably, humans are often to blame for this themselves because they provoke the animals.

It is the last prime habitat for Siberian tigers.

In the 1940s, they were hunted to the brink of extinction and only saved due to the new protection grant of tigers in Russia in 1965.

The majestic Siberian Tiger, mainly found in eastern Russia or northern China, is our planet’s largest tiger species and cat. It is sadly also the most endangered .

Tigers in Zoos and National Parks

The consequences for the animals are fatal: Massive damage to their health, severe behavioral disorders, and increased mortality.  This Tiger Safari or Tour guide should highlight only sustainable places to go.

  • Perform feats for which they are often trained by force,
  • Have to change venues 50 times a year on average,
  • Spend most of their time in small cages, inadequate enclosures, or in the transport wagon,
  • That essential species-specific behavior such as social contacts or movement are considerably restricted or made completely impossible,
  • that they have little variety or occupation,
  • that they are often not fed and cared for appropriately,
  • That veterinary control or care is often inadequate because there are only a few specialized veterinarians for wild animals nationwide or the circus cannot or will not afford the treatment financially,
  • that in many cases the circus operators lack the necessary expertise,
  • that there is no fixed winter quarters during the play-free period. Only about every tenth company can call a winter accommodation its own.

Nevertheless, animals of wild species can still be seen in many circus operations that travel around the world: Tigers, lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, sea lions or monkeys – the range of animal species carried along is extensive. Wild animals suffer in the circus. They suffer massively, because:

Wild animals make exceptionally high demands on their keeping and accommodation. In a circus enterprise, responsible keeping wild animals is generally impossible.

Masters 2024: What makes Augusta National so great anyway?

We asked our expert course raters to dish on the things that make Augusta National Golf Club so special.

Stephen Denton

GOLF’s Top 100 course panelists are among the most respected and well-traveled course evaluators in the game. They’re also keen to share their opinions. In this GOLF.com series, we’ll unlock their unvarnished views on all questions course-related. Check out GOLF’s latest  Top 100 Courses in the U.S. ,  Top 100 Courses in the World ,  Top 100 Courses You Can Play ,  Best Municipal Courses in the U.S. , and  100 Best Short Courses . Meet all of our  Top 100 panelists here.

Let’s help the casual fans tuning in for the Masters. From a design perspective, what makes Augusta National so great anyway?

Thomas Brown (has played 95 of GOLF’s Top 100 Courses in the World): Recovery options. Alister MacKenzie’s vision to use golf courses with short-grass to expand green-complex variety is on display each year at the Masters. Royal Melbourne and The Jockey Club are two Mackenzie designs that embody Augusta National’s standard for width, and recovery decisions make the golfer decide between a lob, chip or putt. MacKenzie associate Perry Maxwell made the most of fairway contours in the topography. Revisions Maxwell made to the fairway shaping in front of the 14th green are an example of the course’s strategy introducing uncertainty in controlling running shots from the rough into the partially blind green behind the fairway landforms.

11 affordable Masters things to have someone buy you this year at Augusta National

Pete Phipps (has played 71 of GOLF’s Top 100 Courses in the World): One of the more intriguing aspects of MacKenzie’s work at Augusta is the rhythm of your round and how that plays into your mindset. It feels like a rollercoaster of energy and emotions as you bounce between being on offense and defense throughout. He gives you a chance to get aggressive on 2 and 3 before you play safe on 4, 5 and 6. Then you come back out swinging on 7, 8 and 9 before white-knuckling it on 10, 11 and 12. You’re back to putting the pedal down on 13, 14, 15 and 16 before holding on for a safe landing on 17 and 18. I think there is real genius in MacKenzie’s routing and design in order to provide such fun and exciting rhythm to your round.

Jeff Lewis (has played 96 of GOLF’s Top 100 Courses in the World): The original course from 90 years ago was about as strategic as anything ever designed. Augusta has so many holes that tempt and can lead to big swings in either direction for one’s score. Unfortunately, the club has taken a number of steps to reduce the strategic interest of the course over time, especially by putting in the second cut of short rough. In the old days, players who pulled their drives on 15, for example, could hit a big slinging hook around the tree and try to hit the green anyway. The combination of the second cut and a ball engineered to go straight have rendered that decision irrelevant. Everybody lays up.

Christian Faergemann (has played 72 of GOLF’s Top 100 Courses in the World): Augusta National’s ability as a course to create drama. The overall routing and the mix of hard and scoring holes is well-scripted. The phrase “the back nine on Sunday” is used for a reason to describe the nerve and mental strengths needed to put on a green jacket Sunday evening. The scoring holes can easily turn into nightmares and have done so countless times in the past. This year will probably not be any different, and I can’t wait to follow it!

Understand [ edit ]

Khimki is part of the Moscow conurbation, on the banks of the Moscow channel and the Klyazma river, and one of the highest density rate in the region.

Before the city, there were several noble lands, which villages are still exist. During the late 19th century, the site of Khimki station became (and remains) the place of Muscovite dachas. Khimki was granted city status, and the Stariye Khimki development was completed. Since then, development programs have turned the countryside into an important city in the region.

Today, Khimki is not only a residential district, but also an important economic and trade center of the Moscow conurbation.

Districts [ edit ]

  • Stariye Khimki . The main part of the city with Stalinist architecture.
  • Khimki forest area . The quite and remarkable side with classic Russian country houses and dachas.
  • Noviye Khimki . The residential district. Not the destination to explore.

Get in [ edit ]

Map

Since Khimki is close to Moscow, has very high population density and a lot of development projects, the city is under blockade by Moscow to protect the capital's transport infrastructure from the flood of people and vehicles migrating in and out every day. There are no ways of comfortable and fast way to get the city.

By car [ edit ]

Khimki is accessible by car via Leningradsky Hwy from Moscow. The part of this highway from Moscow till end of Khimki city limits is the busiest road in Russia.

By public transport [ edit ]

By suburban train from Leningradskii station to Khimki station or Levoberegnaya platform (a district on the left bank of Moscow channel).

A lot of buses and marshrutkas run from Rechnoy Vokzal metro station, at the north end of the Green Line. You can also reach Khimki by marshrutka, bus or trolleybus from Planernaya metro station.

Get around [ edit ]

The most comfortable way to explore the city is to bike or take a car .

Tiger Woods ‘still talking’ with PGA about 2025 Ryder Cup captaincy

There is speculation that Woods will lead the U.S. Team that will try to retake the Ryder Cup next year at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course in Long Island, New York. Woods did not quash a query about the captaincy when asked about it Tuesday in his pre-tournament press conference at the Masters.

“We’re still talking about it,” he said with a smile.

Woods was a victorious player-captain in the Presidents Cup five years ago and has served as a captain’s assistant in both that event and the Ryder Cup. Woods is always among the names discussed for potential captaincies, because of his legendary playing resume and his passion for the role. He brings the same tactician mindset that he displayed as a player to his leadership roles in team events.

“He remembers everything that ever happened in the game, he thinks about everything that could happen in the game. … He thinks about the small little details,” said Davis Love III, for whom Woods served as a vice captain in the 2016 Ryder Cup. Love said Woods would text him at all hours about potential pairings before the team roster was even finalized.

Woods won the 2002 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black, as well. Though it doesn’t take much to excite New York sports fans, his presence at the event would surely inspire extra emotion. Woods remains open to the possibility of leading a U.S. team that is trying to recover from last year’s loss in Italy.

At the Hero World Challenge late last year, Woods brushed off any talk of the Ryder Cup, saying ”There’s too much at stake with our TOUR to think about a Ryder Cup.” In addition to a hoped-for handful of competitive appearances per year, Woods also serves on the Board of Directors for both the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Enterprises.

Woods added Tuesday that he has discussed the role with PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh, with whom he partnered in the Seminole Pro-Member earlier this year. That one-day event was Woods’ only competitive round between The Genesis Invitational in February and this week’s Masters. The role may have been a topic of discussion during their round together at the historic course, as Woods hinted Tuesday at a recent conversation about the captaincy and said conversations on the topic would continue after the Masters.

“It's something that Seth and I are going to sit back and talk about it after this event,” Woods said Tuesday. “I said I'm going to be busy for a couple weeks, so let me focus on getting through this week and hopefully getting another jacket, and then we can sit back and talk about it next week.”
