Sky lantern in Shifen Old Street

North Coast Day Tour: Yehliu, Shifen and Jiufen

The North Coast Tour is one of the best day tours from Taipei City. If you only have a day to spare from your city exploration, I recommend doing this one.

I booked my North Coast Tour via KKDay . The itinerary includes Yehliu Geopark, Shifen Old Street and Shifen Waterfalls, and Jiufen Old Street.

I was really excited about this tour because I’ve read that Jiiufen is said to be the inspiration to Miyazaki’s Spirited Away . I’m a big fan of this film and, when I was a kid, I had a huge crush on Haku, the boy who helped Chichiro. Miyazaki has since debunked this but the fan girl in me wasn’t disappointed at all. I still looked forward to walking the streets of Jiufen Old Street.

Our meetup location for the day tour was in Taipei Main Station at around 9AM. There were few tourists in the city and it was a good thing that there were enough participants for the tour to push through.

Our tour guide is Karen. Karen is very knowledgeable about the main tourist attractions in Taiwan and during our tour she would give us her personal recommendations on what to see & do.

P.S. Visiting Taiwan soon? Read our Guide to Taiwan for First-Timers and 5 Days Itinerary in Taiwan .

Yehliu Geopark

Shifen old street, shifen waterfall, jiufen old street, book your tour with kkday, what to read next:.

Yehliu Geopark is a cape located in Wanli District, famous for its unique hoodoo stones. The whole landscape has a yellowish color and it protrudes next to the sea, so every now and then you can see big waves crashing over it.

I was prepared to go alone and take miserable selfies, but lo and behold, another solo tourist named April joined me and we agreed to go together for the rest of the tour.

Kat and April in Yehliu Geopark

We were given 45 minutes to explore Areas 1 and 2. We followed a path and took pictures with the rock formations. As said above, there were few tourists on this day so there was only a short queue of people wanting to take a picture beside the Queen’s Head. We also took pictures of the other rock formations but we couldn’t really tell which is which.

Yehliu Geopark

Just before our time ended, we took a short stroll around the shops outside the Yehliu Geopark selling local goods and souvenirs.

Shifen Old Street is a railroad town located in Pingxi (or Pingsi). It used to be a mining town, but now it’s famous for its quaint shops & restaurants and sky lantern activity.

If you want to fly your own sky lantern, you need to select a sky lantern first. There are single-colored lanterns which are meant for a specific purpose (e.g., red = health) and multi-colored ones that cover multiple life areas. Once you’ve chosen what you want, you’ll be asked to write in calligraphy your wishes to all sides of the sky lantern.

I bought a red sky lantern for health & peace. To be honest, I just thought it would look good in pictures. I wrote health wishes on the lantern and a few doodles. Tip: Make sure to write in big letters so it can easily be seen. Take it from me and my tiny handwriting.

April didn’t want one but she helped me fly it. An elder shop resident took pictures of us. He was very proactive and he suggested poses for us. We were laughing all throughout because he seemed to know more about how to pose than us. Then we lit the sky lantern and wooosh it flew away.

Sky lantern in Shifen Old Street

The whole activity lasted 15 minutes tops, and it was really fun. I didn’t expect to enjoy it that much.

For those who are worrying about the environmental impact of this activity, the local government gives incentives to locals to collect the rubbish (about 10 NTD for each lantern). This is also the reason why it’s only the place in the country where people are allowed to fly sky lanterns.

Afterwards, we had a quick lunch. Some of the notable items you can buy at Shifen include noodles , oyster omelette , and BBQ chicken wings . We bought the last one and it was very good. The chicken wing is filled with rice inside and smells heavenly. It costs 65 NTD each.

Shifen Waterfall is also located at Pingxi, close to Shifen Old Street. The waterfall stands 40 meters high and is said to be the tallest waterfall in the country.

During weekends, KKDay does not include the Shifen Waterfall in the itinerary due to heavy traffic. Thankfully, it was a weekday so I got the chance to see it even though I do not read fine prints.

It takes 15 minutes to reach the waterfall from the parking area. We passed by a hanging bridge and then shops selling snacks and drinks. Then we reached the viewdeck to the Shifen Waterfall. There is no swimming area here but you can take pictures and take a leisurely break in the surrounding shops, if you have time.

Shifen Waterfall

If I’m not mistaken, we were given 45 minutes here, which was just enough time for us to take pictures and linger a bit before getting back to our bus.

Jiufen is a seaside mountain area located in Ruifang District in New Taipei City. It rose to popularity in the early 2000s due to its resemblance to Hayao Miyazaki’s animated film Spirited Away. Tourists believed that it inspired the film, although as said above Miyazaki denied this as he hadn’t been to Jiufen yet.

Mountainside view in Jiufen

Our bus stopped in the parking lot and our tour guide informed us that there are 2 ways to get to Jiufen Old Street. One is to walk the 200-step stairway from the Police Station and the other is to take a taxi or bus to the entrance beside Family Mart. We’re reasonable people so we chose to take a bus.

Jiufen Old Street is composed of narrow alleyways filled with eateries & shops. Red lanterns are hang above the stalls. Jiufen Old Street one of the most popular attractions in the country. Hence, it’s always crowded especially on weekends. In a way, we were lucky that there were little foot traffic when we visited Jiufen. We were given 2 hours to go around.

Here are the things you can do in Jiufen:

  • Food trip! Have fish ball or meat ball soup, thick fish noodle soup, taro ball or sweet potato ball, and a whole lot of desserts.
  • Buy your pasalubong. Jiufen is one of the cheapest places to buy hand-made pineapple cakes. You can also find cheese bars, peanut candy, and other snacks. There are also stalls selling high-quality Alishan tea.
  • Take pictures along the narrow streets. Take a signature photo beside the 100-year-old Amei Teahouse and the Shengping Theater .
  • Collect trinkets with Spirited Away design. Yep, the locals capitalize on its reputation by selling No-Face items.

April and I walked around to look at shop offerings. The first food we tried was peanut ice cream roll. It was a novelty, but I don’t know if I like it because I couldn’t really tell the flavors of the ice cream. Next was taro balls in soup. It was very good, especially since it was rainy and cold. We enjoyed the soup in a small eatery that overlooks the surrounding coastal area. Last, we had fried octopus which was good as well.

Souvenir store in Jiufen

Jiufen Old Street wasn’t what I expected. I actually imagined traditional tea houses and bath houses, but it was really commercial. That saying, I still loved it because coming here was a dream come true for me.

Jiufen is our last stop in our North Coast itinerary. I said goodbye to April as she planned to stay there overnight while I went back to the tour bus to Taipei City.

I really enjoyed this trip. As said above, this is one of the best day tours from Taipei City you can do.

It’s my first time to go on a tour by KKDay abroad, though I have already booked with them a private tour in Cebu in the Philippines. I liked that our tour guide Karen is knowledgeable and capable and that our itinerary seems to be well thought of, although a little bit compressed. In particular, I liked our stops at Shifen Old Street and Jiufen Old Street. As a solo traveler, this was an easy & convenient way for me to explore the north coast. I recommend it to you as well.

You can book your North Coast day tour with KKDay . As of March 2020, joiner rate is 445 NTD per person.

  • Meetup time at 8:45 AM and returning time is 5:30-6:30PM.
  • On weekends and holidays, Shifen Waterfall is not included in the itinerary due to heavy traffic.
  • Meals and entrance fees are not included.

Here are some other fees you should note:

  • Yehliu Geopark entrance fee – 80 NTD | Book in advance here
  • Chinese sky lantern: 1 color – 150 NTD | 4 colors – 200 NTD | 8 colors – 350 NTD

Disclaimer : Thanks KKday for the complimentary tour! As always, thoughts and opinions are my own.

Taipei One Day Trip: Hidden Gems of North Coast Taiwan

Qingshan falls.

Kick-off your Taiwan tour with a visit to one of the most beautiful waterfalls near Taipei – Qingshan Waterfall! This 30m-high waterfall is neatly tucked away in Yangmingshan National Park and located n ear Shimen District in New Taipei City.

While it is quite a trek to get to this secret waterfall, you’ll be completely immersed in nature. The trail runs under a thick jungle canopy, which really helps if you’re visiting during summer. Along the way, you’ll need to scramble over rocks and rugged terrain. Nonetheless, there are plenty of places to take a breather, dip your toes in the river stream, and enjoy the tranquility and breathtaking views.

Hiking Qingshan Falls Trail shouldn’t take m ore than 40 minutes to complete . And, once you reach the waterfall, the effort will be totally worth it!

Since Qingsgan Falls is a lesser-known Taipei waterfall, it’s a great place to get away from the c rowds . Make sure to read my super detailed  Qingshan Falls guide  for more tips. I’ve included lots of information — from what to pack, how to get there, and much more. Oh, and travel tip — don’t forget your swimsuit!

Qingshan Waterfall Trail is a fun Taipei day trip and one of the best-kept secrets of the Taiwan north coast.

Shimen Rice Terraces

While most travelers to Shimen head out to see Laomei Green Reef during April and May, few visitors know about the breathtaking Shimen Rice Terraces a short drive from here.

Beautiful rice fields of Shimen Terrace.

The terrace dates back nearly 100 years and was hand-built by local farmers using volcanic rocks from the area. It’s a great place to take photos of lush rice paddies and the mountains create a beautiful backdrop.

Shimen Rice Terrace is a real hidden gem and a must on any north coast Taiwan day trip from Taipei.

Jinshan Old Street

Jinshan Old Street (formerly known as Jinbaoli Old Street) is full of history and some of the best eats on Taiwan’s north coast. As one of the last remaining old streets from the Qing Dynasty, it has a rich history dating back over 300 years.

Today, Jinshan Old street is still a bustling place and draws crowds from near and far. It’s a great place to take a gentle stroll, marvel at the architecture, pop by temples, and of course, sample the fantastic street food.

Jinshan Old Street is famous for its tasty local snacks, fresh produce, and seafood. There are lots to try, so come hungry! Some of the most popular snacks to try include Jinbaoli duck meat, one-bite pastries, and s weet potatoes. That said, no visit to Jinshan Old Street would be complete without sampling taro cakes, pickled goods, handmade egg rolls, and caramelized yams.

Despite only being a few hundred meters long, one could easily spend 1-2 hours here, sampling different local dishes, taking photos, and watching people come and go.

Jinshan Old Street is a must-go place when exploring the north coast of Taiwan.

Nanzilin Hiking Trail

If you’re looking for breathtaking views of mountains and sea, it doesn’t get much better than the Nanzilin Hiking Trail. Located next to the tiny fishing village, Nanya, the Nanzilin Hiking Trail is a short hike, but a tough one. It’s a popular spot among sunrise and sunset chasers and undoubtedly one of the most stunning walks along the north coast of Taiwan.

The trail is less than 1km long, but since it’s a steep climb, expect to break a sweat. First, you’ll need to climb several flights of wooden stairs. Once you reach the end of the staircase, the trail mostly consists of stones and a dirt path. From here, the trail continues uphill. There’s not much shade along the way, so don’t forget to bring a hat, umbrella, and water!

A bird's-eye view of Taiwan's northern coast.

There is a cute pavilion half-way up the trail where you can take a breather and marvel at the panoramic views below. Continuing from here, it’s the final push to reach the mountain top. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a bird’s-eye view of Nanya fishing village, Bitou Cape, Teapot Mountain, and Keelung Mountain. The vistas are mind-blowing – but judge for yourself by the photos included!

Tackling this trail is best done in the early morning or late in the afternoon. If you happen to visit during autumn or winter, y ou’ll get to see beautiful fields of silver grass swaying in the wind.

To find the trailhead make your way along the small road that runs past Nanxin Temple. There are clear signs in English and Chinese guiding the way, so don’t worry about getting lost.

Breathtaking views atop Nanzilin Hiking Trail

Where to visit in the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area?

Old caoling loop line bicycle path.

For cycling and history enthusiasts, experience riding the Old Caoling bicycle trail 舊草嶺隧道 on a day trip from Taipei. After a short train ride from Taipei, you will arrive in Fulong train station. Rent a bicycle from the bicycle shops near the train station and pedal towards the Old Caoling tunnel to start your 20-km bicycle tour.

The Old Caoling Tunnel was built in 1924 during the Japanese colonial period and it was the longest railway tunnel in Taiwan at the time of construction. The tunnel used to connect Fulong and Shichang and it crossed New Taipei City and Yilan County.

It is thrilling to cycle through the 2,167 metres tunnel and imagine that trains used to rumble through the same railway tracks many years ago. After a nostalgic ride through the tunnel, you can continue the rest of the cycling trail that will bring you along picturesque coastlines and through fishing villages. Your relaxing ride will end back in Fulong train station. Here’s some useful maps!

If you like to exercise more, you can head northwards and ride to Fulong beach and on the Longmen-Yanliao bikeway.

Fulong Beach and Fulong International Sand Sculpture Arts Festival

Fulong Beach (福隆海水浴場) is nicknamed “gold coast of Taiwan” for its sandy shores. When the weather is warm in summer, locals flock to the beach for marine activities like sailing, kayaking, surfing and even seaside yoga.

Every year, the Fulong International Sand Sculpture Arts Festival (福隆沙雕藝術季) is held here over a few months. Sand artists from all over the world create awe-sinspiring sand sculptures based on the theme. There are many fun activities at the festival for all ages.

Nanya Rocks

In the most northernmost part of the scenic area, you can access the Nanya Geological Hiking Trail and see the Nanya rocks (南雅奇石). The area is well known for its unique landscape, natural rock formations and sea-eroded shores crafted by the forces of nature.

The majestic rock sculptures decorating the coastlines have been given adorable names like Ice Cream Rock, Bamboo Shoot Rock, and Fur Seal Rock by the locals. This hidden spot offers breath taking views away from the crowds that usually flock to Yehliu Geopark.

Soak in the grandeur of nature during your hike. Photo taking tip: The sunrise and sunset here are incredible!

Turtle Island

taiwan north coast tour

Turtle Island 龜山島 is a volcanic island that looks like a cute turtle resting in the ocean. Ferries in Wushi Harbor 烏石漁港 in Toucheng bring visitors to this island. The island is protected for its wealth of ecological resources and all visitors must apply for permission to visit the island and be accompanied by professional guides.

This small but mighty island has active hot springs, cliffs, caves, and many more natural resources for an educational tour. Climb about 1,700 steps to the 401 lookout point to enjoy panoramic scenery of the landscape and surrounding ocean.

If you encounter the right weather conditions, you can see sulphur smoke on the island and some interesting phenomena that the locals have described as “divine turtle puts on a hat”, “turtle faces the sunrise” and even “smart turtle wags its tail”.

If you visit in the months from April to September, you can join whale and dolphin-watching tours and meet different species of dolphins and whales swimming near the island.

How to get to Turtle Island?

You have to apply for permission in advance to visit the island and the easiest way is to book a guided tour with tour operators who are licensed to take tourists the island or via travel website that lists these tours (like Klook where you can book Turtle Island tour like this ). Sometimes hotels in the area can help you to book a tour or you can book directly with tour operators in Taiwan. Most tours include ferry rides to and back from the island, guided tour around the island, and whale/dolphin watching activities.

The starting tour of the tour is from Wushi Harbor 烏石漁港 to take the ferry to the island. Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area provides more information on how to get to Wushi Harbor.

The Northern Coast Tour Taiwan: A Fun Day Trip from Taipei

If you are looking for a great day trip in Taiwan, one of the popular activities is to go on a Northern Coast Tour Taiwan. Here’s why…

Taiwan is pretty popular not only in its food and shopping scene. The country has a good mix of cultural attractions, modern attractions, and natural attractions . And when you visit its Northern Coast, you get to enjoy most of its natural attractions.

During our visit to Taiwan, we got a chance to go on a day trip from Taipei to the northern coast of the country. Despite it being short, we managed to see several attractions in the area.

Below are some of the attractions you can enjoy on a Northern Coast Tour Taiwan.

Table of Contents

How to Get to the Northern Coast

How to book a day tour, tour costs and entrance fees, yehliu geopark, jiufen old street, shifen waterfall, shifen old streets, golden waterfall, yin yang sea, northern coast tour itinerary, northern coast tour travel tips.

To visit the Northern Coast, you will have to t ake the red line at the Taipei’s MRT station going to the Tamsui Station . From the station, take the North Coast Shuttle Bus and drop off at any of the designated bus stop locations.

The bus is a great transport option for tourists traveling through Taiwan and who wants to see the stops on their own time.

You will need to find the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle – North Coast Shuttle Bus in front of the Kavalan Whiskey and Mr. Brown Coffee. It is located at bay #6 and signed route 862.

A 1-day pass is available for a fee of 200 NTD. It’s like another version of the hop-on-hop-off bus that will take you to some of the major attractions.

taiwan north coast tour

If you want a hassle-free booking experience, you can avail of organized tours as we did. Our Northern Coast Tour Taiwan was organized by our friend from Ludify Trips .

The tour cost includes the guide, the vehicle, and gasoline. We were taken to 6 tourist spots on the northern coast by our tour guide/ driver.

The cost does not include the entrance fee and any of the tour activities.

The van picked us up in front of the Pillow Hostel where we stayed the entire trip. Our pick-up time was at 8 AM and we were dropped off at the hotel by 6-7 PM. Travel time took an hour or so, I think, as it depended on the traffic.

taiwan north coast tour

There are certain costs that you need to cover on top of the tour guide and the vehicle. The tour costs 1,200 NTD per head and as mentioned included the guide and the vehicle.

Aside from the amount, you have to pay for 80 NTD for the entrance fee at the Yehliu Geopark. Another activity that you will need to pay is 100-200 NTD for the lanterns at Shifen but that is optional.

The food and drinks are also not included yet, so you will also have to pay for your lunch and snacks too.

Northern Coast Tour Taiwan Attractions

If you are to visit this side of Taiwan, here are some of the Northern Coast attractions that you should include in the itinerary.

One of the most popular attractions in Northern Taiwan is the Yehliu Geopark. It is the home to unique geological formations which also includes the iconic ‘Queen’s Head’.

The park is located along the cape of the town of Wanli that is estimated to stretch for about 1,700 meters. Aside from the ‘Queen’s Head’, several rock formations called the Sea Candles, Fairy Shoe and Ginger Rocks are located here.

When we visited the area, it was too hot for our liking and we ended not truly enjoying it.

One of the vibrant and popular street markets in Taiwan is the Jiufen Old Street . It was our second stop during the Northern Coast Tour Taiwan and where we grabbed lunch and some snacks too.

The streets at the Jiufen Old Street is narrow and steep. It is located overlooking the sea so you’ll get wonderful views of the ocean especially at the edge of the market.

Aside from the souvenir shops, there are plenty of free tastes here too so you can try some of the delicious food before deciding to purchase.

We had our lunch here before deciding to split up to have the freedom to stroll around the market. My husband and I were just happy snapping photos and purchasing a few shirts to take home.

The Shifen Waterfall is Shifen’s popular attraction with its height of 40 meters. It is considered to have one of the most scenic views in Taiwan.

There are several shops and stalls along the way to the falls. You can grab a bite here and there and enjoy the view too.

To get to the falls from the main highway, you will need to pass through a footbridge. The bridge is an attraction in itself but it can be pretty crowded during peak hours so taking photos of just the bridge is tricky.

There are several viewing decks at the falls so you can see it from different heights. The area is pretty much developed so you can enjoy a few hours here.

Don’t forget to try out the delicious fish balls and other tasty treats near the falls too!

Another attraction that you need to visit on your Northern Coast Tour Taiwan is the Shifen Old Streets with its old lanes and alleys in and around the Shifen railway station area.

The Shine Old Streets is also where you can fly a lantern on the railway area for a fee. Cost depends on the number of colors on the lantern that you want. The price starts at 100 NTD.

The Shifen Old Streets was our last stop and by the time we arrived there, it was already in the afternoon. There were lots of people there too and most were already flying their lanterns.

You can write on lantern for your wishes then fly them with the assistance of the attendants. I am not sure of the sustainability of the activity but it appears to be quite a novelty to most tourists.

People are also not allowed to stand on the railways for safety purposes because the train still passes on it on intervals. You can take photos there, though as long as you don’t stay too long.

There are guards and warning bells going off when the train is approaching too.

Aside from the lanterns, there are several stalls that you can also visit and browse through when you go during your Northern Coast Tour Taiwan. You can stay here for hours and enjoy the shops and while you stroll around.

The golden waterfall is a falls in the Ruifang District in New Taipei. It has several uneven levels that add a dramatic landscape to the falls.

Unlike the Shifen Waterfalls, the Golden Waterfall is in a more natural setting with no commercial establishments nearby. There is only a gate of some sorts that prevent people from crossing over.

The Yin Yang Sea is a curious colored patch of the sea located beside the northern coastal road in the Gold Ecological Park. It is one of the stops after the Golden Waterfalls.

There is a parking lot for vehicles near the coast and a raised viewing platform. Here, you can take a glimpse of the amazing Yin Yang formation of the sea.

Aside from the Yin Yang Sea, you can also view an abandoned gold mine in the mountains. Both views are scenic and look amazing.

To help you with planning for your Northern Coast Tour Taiwan, below is the sample Northern Coast Tour itinerary that you can also look as an example:

The tour took the entire day, so if you are planning to include it on your Taiwan trip, then you have to allot one day.

To enjoy your Northern Coast Tour Taiwan, below are some of our recommended travel tips !

1. Wear comfortable clothes when you go on tour. Taiwan’s weather can be pretty hot, as we’ve discovered, so make sure to wear light and comfortable clothes. 2. Don’t forget to bring some sun protection like sunscreen lotion, cap, umbrella and a pair of glasses. 3. Wear comfortable shoes as the Northern Coast Tour involves walking especially at the Jiufen Old Streets. 4. Stay hydrated and bring water with you! 5. If you want to save money, bring some light snacks when you go to keep from buying stuff. 6. Dispose of your garbage properly and bring them with you!

1-Day Private Tour of Taiwan’s Northern Coast Itinerary

Pickup from your hotel in Greater Taipei, or Taipei or Keelung railway stations. Includes lunch, mineral water, and insurance.

  • As green and rugged as Ireland, yet often blessed with strikingly sunny weather, Taiwan’s north coast offers a rich variety of landscapes. Before the sun gets too high in the sky, we’ll reach Yehliu Geopark, a peninsula-shaped by wind and wave erosion.
  • This natural wonderland is adored by geologists, kids, and everyone else on account of its engrossing caves, hoodoos, potholes, overhangs, honeycombed outcrops, and rocks marked with swirls or concentric ripples.
  • The north coast is dotted with little fishing villages like Guihou, very close to Yehliu. It’s also the region where many of the crabs eaten in Taiwan are caught using baited cages.
  • After a lunch of super-fresh local seafood we’ll head into Keelung and learn a bit about the history of the city. Being the north’s major port it has been subjected to attack and invasion by foreign powers. Those willing to walk a bit can enjoy the historic remains of Dawulun Fort and superb ocean views.
  • Keelung is one place where we really do recommend arranging in advance to extend the tour until well after sunset so you can make the most of one of Taiwan’s most famous night markets.
  • Few of the vendors at Miaokou Night Bazaar speak English, but our guide will help you find tasty delicacies to your liking. By 8pm we’ll be heading back to your hotel or the transport hub of your choice.

Things to do on Taiwan’s North Coast

A group of kayakers and paddlers view the sunrise from the ocean.

An Insider’s Guide to New Taipei City – North Coast Districts

The North Coast of New Taipei is known for its dramatic landscapes, geological wonders, coastal cliffs, fine sand beaches, and, of course, being a hot spot for ocean recreation.

The beautiful Northern Coastal Highway (Provincial Highway No. 2) runs the length of the North Coast from New Taipei to Yilan and offers enough unbeatable views for an entire day. As it travels along the coast, the highway passes countless attractions including: numerous coastal rock formations, a handful of pristine white sandy beaches (some more secluded than others), quaint fishing ports, and several easy-to-moderate hiking trails.

The North Coast of Taiwan can be done as a day trip, and it can be combined with a trip through the Ruifang District just a little bit inland. Depending on your time constraints we offer North Coast day tours and North Coast half-day tours , both of which include a stop at the famous mountain town of Jiufen.

Continue reading for a list of the best beaches, seaside rock formations and watersports destinations (including snorkeling, diving and stand-up paddleboarding) on the North Coast.

How to Plan Your Best Taiwan North Coast Instagram Tour

taiwan north coast tour

I may add Taipei’s historic buildings and colonial heritage as my fifth pick, until on my last visit we signed up for the “Instagram North Coast Tour”, and discovered there are also some interesting and beautiful, both natural and man-made spots along the north coast of Taiwan.

While I have shared about some must-see art spaces and Instagram-worthy spots in Taipei city ; The north coast area extends from Taipei to Keelung, and it is impossible to visit them all in one day.

The itinerary covers Instagram-worthy spots, and you are welcome to plot your route!

I will let the photos do the talking and you may also find the map at the end for some inspiration. However, if you are not that much into taking “Instagram-worthy” photos; you can still appreciate some unique and breathtaking sites and the dramatic coastline and landscapes. To make your excursion easier, join the Jiufen Village and Northeast Coast Tour , or the Yeliu Geopark and Keelung Harbor Tour .

Taiwan’s North Coast

taiwan north coast tour

There is so much more than taking photos because the entire area has quite a lot to offer. I just talked about Jiufen , a mountain town known for its narrow alleyways, teahouses, souvenir shops, and intimate homestays. It is a popular short getaway for not only foreign visitors but also the Taipei locals. Shifen Old Street has been featured in many movies and cultural scenes and releasing sky lanterns is a popular activity. Today, they offer eco-friendly sky lanterns to eliminate the damage to the environment while keeping this tradition alive.

The rich tradition and history of Taiwan’s North Coast were partly connected to its mining industry, which was operated for hundreds of years. Sulfur was an important resource extracted from Taiwan at the early stage, and then business expanded to coal mining in the 19 th century when the demand from foreign trade increased.

taiwan north coast tour

No visit to Taiwan is complete without taking a night walk through the bustling night markets. There are many choices in Taiwan, and the small towns in North Taipei have no lack of night markets for visitors to go to. Keelung Night Markets is one of the most popular among the bunch, and don’t forget to stop by the nearby fishing villages for some fresh seafood and nostalgic old Taiwan charm.

taiwan north coast tour

Note that some of these locations should be visited at a specific time, like the Laomei Green Reef turns green from March to May. This phenomenon occurs when the tide lowers following the northeast monsoons and algae such as sea lettuce and green hair grows on the reef.

One-day excursion

For a one-day excursion from Taipei, it is impossible to cover all the highlights listed above. That’s why we themed our day tour as an Instagram tour, having a taste of the breathtaking landscape and scenic spots along the coast of North Taipei.

taiwan north coast tour

Even so, visitors should make some choices as these spots are not exactly nearby. The best way to get around is to hire a driver or join a local tour . We decided to hire a driver because as a group, we can stop and move around at our own pace without worrying about time. It takes about an hour (or even more during peak hours) from the coast to the city of Taipei, so we had only about 6 hours of the day to stop by as many spots as we could and to snap as many photos as we could.

Research is also important here, use the map effectively so you know how to plot your route. I suggest starting from the spot on the left (the westernmost point) and then heading to the right (the easternmost point).

For example, begin your journey from the Zhilan Park observation platform and then move eastward. For a one-day trip, it is more realistic to stop by four to five spots. In this particular day, we decided to kick start at Yinyang Sea and the surrounding areas (Keelung and Ruifang Districts). I highlighted these spots on my map in a different color so you have an area about the time. Once I have done it is pretty clear to me that my next Taipei North Coast tour will be Sanzhi, Shimen, and Jinshan Districts.

taiwan north coast tour

Yinyang Sea

While this term is widely used to describe the male and female, “Yin” and “Yang”, in Chinese culture, refer to the concept of complete opposite, or contrast. Originally, the place was named “Shui Nan Dong” and it was the boundary on the road that led to the famous Jiufen tourist area. Coach buses come and go as they bring tourists to Jiufen, the busy intersection is exactly the photo-taking spot that Instagrammers just love – for two reasons.

First, the natural spectacle of seeing the seawater in two distinct colors. Why? It was because this area used to be a mining site and the natural chemical and gemstones caused the seawater to change its color to yellow. The phenomenon is even apparent from the top (which we will be heading there next) and under a clear sky with strong sunlight.

taiwan north coast tour

The scenery changes at different times of the day from early morning to sunset as well. A big number of visitors come here every day for photo taking.

Second, for comic “manga” readers, you must know about Slam Dunk . The comic was first published in 1990 and one of the most known and memorable scenes was at the Kamakura Station and Fujisawa Station. The scenic train route runs along the sea, with a pedestrian crossing. Yinyang Sea has nothing to do with Slam Dunk directly, but it just resembles the vibe and scenic setting of this scene in Slam Dunk. That’s why thousands of tourists come here for that.

taiwan north coast tour

The Remain of the 13 Levels

Turning your head from the Yinyang Sea parking lot, there’s a small observatory deck and that is the perfect spot for taking a photo with the remain up in the mountain.

The structure is a former smelter plant in Lianxin village. Just because now the abandoned structure looks so striking from afar, it has a nickname of the “Potala Palace of Mountain”, or “the Castle in the sky”. Entering the Remain is forbidden, but since it gained popularity among tourists, the Remain is lit up from 6 to 9 pm, adding much-needed dramatic effects to the spectacle. Many viewpoints give a different perspective of the remain.

taiwan north coast tour

Liukeng Funicular Railway

This spot is kind of an offbeat location compared with the many others up the “Romantic Road.” This Road was a private industrial road built by a mining company until the mining business came to a halt. It passes through a couple of viewpoints, connecting with the Teapot Mountain Trail that leads to the end of Baoshishan Lookout.

If you are driving there, head to the Quan Ji Tang parking lot. There is an old walking tunnel that mysteriously leads to the hiking trail with an unobstructed view of the coast down in the Yinyang Sea. Walk up the trail you will see the remains of a collapsed building. With only the framework and bricks the site creates an interesting backdrop for photo-taking.

At the back of the building is the abandoned Liukeng funicular railway. This historic, yet extremely steep railway was once used for transporting products of the gold mine. Carts and carts of minerals were sent to the coastal area in the past through. The 45-degree steep Liukeng funicular railway is one of the most intact out of all the many funicular railways. Be careful while you are climbing up the building, safety should always be the number one priority when you are taking pictures.

Nanya Geological Trail

taiwan north coast tour

At Nanya, the rocks look extraterritorial after the erosion; and because the hardness and density of the layers of rocks vary, the way that the rocks were eroded came out differently.

Here, you will see the moon-like terrain showcasing a lot of interesting shapes of rock, like the ice cream cone rock, seadog rock, and more.

Shen’Ao Elephant Trunk Rock

taiwan north coast tour

So here comes the bad news. We went to the Elephant Trunk Rock and it is a popular tourist spot. The natural rock arch is swarmed with tourists and it straddles the coast after a 10-minute walk on the rocks. Unfortunately, the rock collapsed (apparently for no obvious reason) on 18 December 2023, possibly due to erosion. Having said that, the rock has long been at risk of collapsing and that’s why the precarious rock has been off-limits for climbing since 2010.

The rock may be gone but don’t forget to take a stroll around the coastal area because there are many wonderful photo-taking opportunities on rocks in peculiar shapes.

Chaojing Park

taiwan north coast tour

Let’s talk about i OCEAN. “i” stands for Intelligent, because the museum combines technology and natural sceneries. The intelligent aquarium showcases the beauty of the sea with 5G theatre, AR and VR underwater tunnel, and visually interactive adventures. The Museum is part of the National Ocean Science and Technology. If you plan to visit the museum, you will need to plan more time.

Another eye-catching installation of art at Chaojing Park is the “ flying broomstick ”, which is rooted in the Harry Potter vibe. It is typically crowded, especially during sunset on the weekends. In case you want to take pictures of the broomstick without anyone, go there early in the morning on a weekday.

In case you still have time to spare, catch the sunset lighting with the colorful houses at the Zhengbin Fishing Harbor , yet another Instagram spot to put on your itinerary. The colorful house by the dock looks very much like Italy if the photography is done right. For us, our time was up when we finished at Chaojing Park and so, the Fishing Harbor will be put in my plan for next time!

Taiwan TOURIST SHUTTLE: NORTH COAST

Taking taiwan tourist shuttle buses between tamsui and keelung.

T he North Coast of Taiwan is the stretch of coastline from the port town of Tamsui in the west to the harbor city of Keelung in the east. Getting to the starting points of trips along this scenic coast from downtown Taipei is convenient. If you want to follow the coast from west to east, take the MRT Tamsui-Xinyi Line to the northern terminus, Tamsui Station; if you want to start in the east, take a commuter train to Keelung Railway Station. Then hop aboard a Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus from designated stops located outside the MRT station in Tamsui or close to Keelung’s railway station.

In Tamsui, board a bus plying the Crown Northern Coast Line , which will take you to such scenic attractions as Baisha Bay, the Fugui Cape Lighthouse (at the northernmost tip of Taiwan), Shimen Arch, the town of Jinshan’s Shitoushan Park, and Yehliu Geopark . For a stretch (between Shimen Arch and Jinshan) the bus leaves the coast and takes a minor road uphill to the Juming Museum (Ju Ming is an internationally acclaimed Taiwanese sculptor) and Yun Garden (the cemetery where famous pop singer Teresa Teng is buried).

At Keelung, you can take a bus on the Keelung Shuttle Bus West Line , which passes by Lovers Lake Park and Green Bay and terminates at Yehliu Geopark. If you want to travel all the way between Tamsui and Keelung using the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle service, you need to change buses at Yehliu Geopark or Guihou Fishing Harbor .

Note: Other regular buses ply the coastal road as well, in full or in part, including No. 860 (Tamsui-Sanzhi), No. 863 (Tamsui-Jinshan), and No. 862 (Tamsui-Keelung), but these do not stop at some of the tourist attractions, such as the Juming Museum/Yun Garden, Shitoushan Park, and Yehliu Geopark.

A third way to get to the North Coast (at Jinshan) from central Taipei by bus is via the mountain route traversing Yangmingshan National Park. Take a Royal Bus Co. ( www.royalbus.com.tw ) No. 1717 bus from Taipei Main Station (the bus stop is a 3-min. walk from Exit M8 at MRT Taipei Main Station, on Gongyuan Road). Buses leave every 30~60 minutes, the ride from Taipei to Jinshan takes about 90 minutes, and tickets are priced NT$150. This route has the advantage that you can take in the splendid mountain scenery of Yangmingshan on your way to the coast. At Jinshan, you can then take a Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus headed for Tamsui or Yehliu.

TAIPEI | Taiwan Northern Coast: Yehliu, Keelung, and Jiufen

Ros, a colleague back in Cebu taking her post-graduate studies in Taiwan, decided to join us on our trip to Taiwan northern coast . Tight school works hinder her to visit these places even it has been nine months since she arrived. When she heard about my plans in visiting Taiwan, she extended her interest to join us.

What I liked about Taipei is its accessibility to most of its tourist attractions. Public transports are readily available to bring you to their stunning gems. All you need to do is make your way to Taipei Main Station where most buses and trains connecting Taipei to other parts of the country.

DIY ITINERARY AND TRAVEL GUIDE: 4D3N Taipei, Taiwan

An hour bus from Taipei West Bus Station – Terminal A and a NTD96 fare on our beep cards, we arrived on a road leading to Yehliu Geopark. Our desire to have breakfast in a cafeteria along the road saved us from getting drenched by the rain. We munched on dim sum and some burgers while the rain tried to exhaust its supply.

TAIWAN NORTHERN COAST TOUR

Queen’s head at yehliu geopark.

It was unfortunate to visit Yehliu Geopark during a holiday. That day was declared a non-working holiday in the whole city because of the dragon boat festival. We had to join a massive crowd of Taiwanese families in visiting the supposedly stunning and serene geopark.

After paying NTD80 for the entrance fee, we accessed the turnstiles to the rock formations. We noticed some rock formations on the side and thought them to be the attractions. We had few snaps and noticed that there were fewer people stopping by. Reading the information engraved on the metal sheets, we found out that they’re only replicas. Dismayed, we continued to the actual formations.

If by chance you grabbed a geopark information flyer, the different rock formations are enumerated and labeled. But most people stay on the central part of the park where the famous queen’s head is located. A wooden walkway was installed for tourists to easily access the other sections of the park.

The queen’s head rock formation is indeed remarkable if you find the right perspective. Geopark’s management is friendly enough to build a wooden walkway that provides the nice angle of the rock formation. But during our visit, there was an unending line of people who wanted to take a selfie with the attraction. Joining them was a foolish decision to do. We just roamed around and find interesting spots to have our own photo sets.

Sun finally peeked from the horizon and everyone stayed under the shades. But it was already late to kill another hour at the park. We grabbed fresh fruit juices and some deep fried goodie from the small market near the geopark’s gate before going back to the main road for the local buses bound to Keelung.

Harbour City of Keelung

An insufficient balance on my Easy card forced the group to spend a few minutes in Keelung. I needed to load my Easy card to avail cheaper fares around Taiwan.

Keelung City is known as a harbor city. The city is known for its sheltered harbor. You can really feel that you’re in Keelung City because of the massive letters that spell out the city name. A Pinay eavesdropping our funny conversation interrupted us when we were puzzled by the bus number to Jiufen.

taiwan northern coast keelung

She was glad to talk and help four lost Filipinos looking for their way to Jiufen Old Street. She signaled us when the right bus number arrived. We boarded the public transport and bade goodbye to a helpful kababayan . We even asked her to join us on our Jiufen trip.

Jiufen Old Street

Same as the scene at Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen Old Street was jam-packed with locals and foreign tourists. The goal to enjoy the crowd-less and vibrant shophouses on both sides of the tiny alley wasn’t a success. However, braving the horde of people, shoulder-to-shoulder with several steps in a minute, was a funny experience.

taiwan northern coast jiufen old street

It was around 6 when we started to join the heavy foot traffic in Jiufen’s Old Street. Starving stomachs already made their presence felt. We decided to look for the famous beef noodles as suggested by Ros. The first stalls luckily serve piping hot bowls of beef noodles so we scrambled into the shop to look for seats. It was a filling meal to start our discovery of Jiufen’s interesting history.

When we regained few energies with the bowl of noodles, we threw ourselves back to the stream of people. Most stalls, selling different items from crackers, dim sum, tarts and other pastries, offer a free taste to everyone. The noodles we had wasn’t meant for dinner but picking and trying food from the free taste plates made us full on our walk along the historic street .

The group had one goal on that afternoon, to look for the house that inspired the movie Spirited Away. We asked some vendors but the directions they’ve provided seemed wrong. Postcards are everywhere so we looked for the image and ask the vendor for directions. Thankfully, our dollar spent on the postcard is worth-it because the lady gave us the right direction.

Jiufen’s History

Jiufen is a mountain town on the northeastern coast of Taiwan. It was a decommissioned mining town originally built by the Japanese during their stay in 1893. With the Japanese occupation, you can still perceive the Japanese influence on the architecture and culture of the town which remained untouched since the old days. Now, visiting Jiufen Old Street is a usual day trip activity for most tourists touring around Taiwan.

It was a tiring day in Taiwan northern coast but we still needed to get back to Taipei. With the massive crowd, getting a seat on a bus back to the city was indeed a challenge. Joining the queue for almost an hour, we found ourselves sleeping inside an air-conditioned bus back to Taipei. Around 11 in the evening when we got back to our hotel. Definitely a long and tiring day on our Taiwan itinerary.

North Taiwan is the most scenically varied part of the country. Wild terrain, fierce indigenous tribes and even wilder weather terrified early settlers, making it one of the last parts of the island to be colonized by the Chinese. In 1949 the region was swamped by a huge influx of refugees from China, and today its jam-packed cities contain more Mandarin-speaking “mainlanders” and their descendants than anywhere else in Taiwan, providing a high proportion of Kuomintang (KMT) support.

Hakka country

Jiufen and jinguashi, lion’s head mountain scenic area, north coast and guanyinshan national scenic area, northeast and yilan coast national scenic area, northern cross-island highway, pingxi branch rail line, shei-pa national park.

The region encompasses Hsinchu, Miaoli, Taoyuan, Taipei and Yilan counties, part of a densely populated urban corridor stretching from Keelung on the northeast coast to the fast-expanding cities of Taoyuan and Zhongli further west. Proximity to the capital makes the whole area highly accessible and much of it can be visited as a series of extended day-trips. Beyond this urban core lies a dramatic coastline, one of the north’s most appealing features: the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area and, further south, the Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area offer spectacular scenery and some decent beaches. Between the two areas, the port city of Keelung is set in a strategic harbour surrounded by ruined fortresses and is home to Taiwan’s best night market, as well as its biggest annual Ghost Festival. Inland, the Pingxi Branch Rail Line winds its way through a lush mountain valley, past scenic Shifen Falls and Pingxi itself, home of Taiwan’s most magical event, the release of hundreds of “heavenly lanterns” during the Lantern Festival . Nearby, the once booming mining towns of Jiufen and Jinguashi have been reinvented as tourist attractions, sporting atmospheric teahouses, snack stalls and museums.

Further south, Hsinchu and Miaoli counties form the Hakka heartland of Taiwan, with Beipu providing ample opportunity to experience Hakka food and culture, and Sanyi , renowned as the country’s foremost woodcarving centre. But beyond all of this, and never far from view, lies an untamed interior of giant peaks and isolated valleys, home to the awe-inspiring Shei-Pa National Park and Taian Hot Springs , a tranquil spa retreat surrounded by great hiking country and Atayal tribal villages. With more time and preferably your own transport, you can traverse the winding Northern Cross-Island Highway , connecting the historic streets of Daxi with Yilan on the east coast. Yilan county contains a handful of worthwhile stops, especially the plunging Wufengqi Waterfalls .

Tailor-made trips for   Taiwan

Stretching southeast from Hsinchu, Hsinchu county is home to large numbers of Hakka people: though the ethnic group accounts for roughly fifteen percent of Taiwan’s population, eighty percent of Hsinchu claims Hakka ancestry. Beipu is the most famous Hakka town in north Taiwan, while the Yimin Temple near Xinpu is the centre of Hakka religious life on the island.

Lying around 20km southeast of Hsinchu, just north of the Lion’s Head Mountain Scenic Area, the small town of BEIPU (北埔; běipŭ) is the centre of Hakka culture in north Taiwan, the counterpart of Meinong in the south. Though it’s a bit touristy these days, the compact area of old buildings and teahouses around Citian Temple has plenty of rustic charm, and it makes an easy excursion from Hsinchu or even Taipei.

Beipu’s tiny bus station is on Zhongzheng Road (中正路; zhōngzhèng lù), a short walk from the old part of town. Walk a few metres to Nanxing Street (南星街; nánxīngjiē) and turn right, passing some good places to try léichá , and on to the next junction with “ old street” (aka Beipu Street; 北埔街; běipŭjiē), thick with touristy shops and food stalls. The shop on the corner is Lung Yuan Pastry Store (隆源餅行; lóngyuán bǐngháng), established in 1871 and maker of tasty sweet potato and taro cakes. Turn left here and head towards Citian Temple (慈天宮; cítiān gōng) at the end of “old street”, established in 1830 and the town’s main centre of worship. The Main Hall is dedicated to Guanyin, flanked by tablets on the right representing the sānguān dàdì (Three Great Emperor-Officials) and on the left, the sānshān guówáng (Three Mountain Kings), all Hakka favourites.

Beipu’s oldest and most appealing buildings are crammed into a relatively small area around the temple, a mixture of traditional red- and mud-brick Chinese houses, well worth exploring. To the south, the Zhongshu Tang (忠恕堂; zhōngshùtáng) built in 1922, is a charming Qing dynasty house with an unusual Baroque facade. Many of these houses are linked to the wealthy Jiang family – patriarch Jiang Xiou-nuan built the grand A-Hsin Jiang Residence (姜阿新宅; jiāng āxīn zhái) in the 1940s just to the north of the temple on Miaoqian Street (廟前街; miàoqiánjiē) in a blend of Western and Japanese styles. Like most of the buildings here, it’s still privately owned and closed to the public. Beyond here, on the corner of Zhongzheng Road is the traditional building known as Jinguangfu (金廣福; jīnguǎngfú), the old meeting hall built in the 1830s, and opposite, Tianshui Tang (天水堂; tiānshuǐtáng), a huge Chinese mansion still occupied by the Jiang family. Zhongzheng Road becomes a narrow alley east of here, containing some of the town’s most atmospheric teahouses .

One of the most controversial of Taiwan’s traditional religious practices is the rearing of “ God Pigs ” (神豬; shénzhū) – unfortunate hogs that are fed to grotesque size, often so large they can no longer walk. The pigs are used as offerings to the gods – it’s a particularly Hakka custom, used mostly at the Yimin Festival when literally hundreds are sacrificed. Pigs are killed the day before, by knife, and the carcass stretched over a metal cage so that it looks disturbingly similar in size to a small bus. It doesn’t take much imagination to work out why animal rights activists get upset about this: cases of force-feeding, alleged ill-treatment and the relatively simplistic method of slaughter have led to increased calls for a ban over the years. Hakka groups say that it’s a traditional part of their culture and that the pigs are well cared for. While it’s true that the tradition of offering pigs goes back to the 1830s, the official “contest” to see who has the biggest and intensive, modern factory methods are relatively new; many pigs are actually bought by Hakka families at the end of the fattening process (which can take two years) when they already sport monstrous proportions.

Known as kèjiārén in Chinese (“guest families”, or hak-kâ ngin in the Hakka language), the Hakka (客家人) are an ethnic sub-group of the Han Chinese family, with their own language, customs and traditions. Originally from the northern Chinese provinces of Henan and Shanxi, Hakka people began coming to Taiwan in the seventeenth century and have since developed a particularly strong identity. At first, Hakka migrants settled in Taipei county and along the western plains, but by the nineteenth century they had moved to the areas in which they predominate today: the mountainous parts of Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli counties, and in the Kaohsiung-Pingdong area. Though few Hakka are farmers today, they’re still regarded as hard workers and have a reputation for producing some of the island’s top scholars and writers : famous Hakka people include ex-president Lee Teng-hui, Soong Mei-ling (Chiang Kai-shek’s wife) and film director Hou Hsiao-hsien. Mainland Chinese leaders Sun Yat-sen and Deng Xiaoping were also Hakka.

Hakka people subscribe to the same religious beliefs as other Chinese groups in Taiwan, but they also have their own special gods and festivals. The worship of the Yimin (義民; yìmín; mostly in north Taiwan) is unique to Taiwan, while the island also has around 145 temples dedicated to the Three Mountain Kings (三山國王; sānshān guówáng), protective spirits of the Hakka and a tradition that came from Guangdong.

The Council for Hakka Affairs was created by the government in 2001 to help preserve Hakka culture on the island, and to ensure its language survives: there are several dialects spoken in Taiwan, with sìxiàn being the most important, and the one you’ll hear on train announcements. Hakka TV (客家電視台; kèjiā diànshìtái), a 24-hour station, has been on air since 2003.

Beipu is the best place in Taiwan to sample léichá (擂茶), or “ ground tea ”, a popular Hakka drink with origins in ancient China. Its modern incarnation is one hundred percent contemporary Taiwan however; a green tea mixed with a paste of peanuts, sesame, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. It’s delicious and very filling (it’s sometimes called “cereal tea”), but the twist is that you get to prepare it yourself. DIY sessions are offered at most of the teashops in town, and in general you are expected to at least have a go, the staff sometimes reluctant to pitch in. After a few minutes you’ll understand why; the raw ingredients are placed into a ceramic bowl and must be pounded into an oily paste with a giant wooden pestle, a process which takes a strong arm, or preferably, several. The tea is usually served with Hakka-style muaji ( máshŭ in Mandarin), sticky rice rolled in ground peanuts.

Just 86km and 34 minutes from Taipei by High Speed Rail, HSINCHU (新竹; xīnzhú) is one of the wealthiest cities in Taiwan, largely as a result of the huge revenues generated by the Science Park on its southeastern border. Yet tucked away in the centre are remnants of one of north Taiwan’s oldest cities, with plenty to offer casual visitors: temples and traditional food stalls reflect the city’s historic roots while the absorbing Glass Museum is testimony to its central role in Taiwan’s glass industry. It’s also the gateway to the heart of Taiwan’s Hakka country , centred on the town of Beipu .

The historic gold mining town of Jiufen , an easy day-trip from Taipei or Keelung, occupies a stunning hillside location with fine views of the northeast coast. It’s justifiably renowned for its tasty snack food and atmospheric teahouses , though despite the hype, the town itself is architecturally fairly typical and not especially attractive. From Jiufen, the road runs 2km over the Mount Keelung ridge to Jinguashi , fast becoming a major tourist destination in its own right and far more interesting. Most of the town’s mining-related attractions have been absorbed into the Gold Ecological Park , an ambitious project that combines restored Japanese buildings with old mining tunnels and ruined temples.

Brief history

Gold was discovered in the Keelung River in 1889, and in 1896 the Japanese began intensive mining in the area, dividing the land split by Mount Keelung between two government-run companies named after the officers in command: the concession operated by Tanaka Group became Jinguashi, while Fujita Group developed Jiufen. The gold ore on the Jiufen side was less pure and in 1899 the Japanese began to lease the concession to local entrepreneur Yen Yun-nien who founded the Taiyang Mining Corp in 1920 and began sub-leasing smaller chunks of land to Chinese prospectors. As a consequence, Jiufen developed haphazardly as a series of independent claims, gaining a reputation as a get-rich-quick town, or Little Hong Kong , in the 1930s.

Taiyang ceased all operations in Jiufen in 1971, and though artists started to settle here in the early 1980s, the good times seemed to be over – Hou Hsiao-hsien ’s 1989 movie City of Sadness , in large part shot in a then atmospheric Jiufen, changed all that. The film was the first to make reference (very indirectly) to the 2-28 Incident and won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Overnight the town became a must-see attraction, creating the tourist carnival that still exists today. One of its admirers is Hayao Miyazaki, who used Jiufen as inspiration for the village in his Japanese anime hit Spirited Away (2001).

In contrast, the Japanese maintained direct control over Jinguashi until 1945, the town developing in an orderly, pragmatic fashion. Its silver and especially copper deposits, discovered in 1905, became far more important than gold – by the 1930s the town was home to around 80,000 people with the hills honeycombed by a staggering 600km of tunnels. Mining finally ceased in 1987 when debts bankrupted the state-owned Taiwan Metal Mining Company – there’s still gold in the hills but it’s become too expensive to extract commercially.

Nestling in a small valley, just over the hill from Jiufen, JINGUASHI (金瓜石; jīnguāshí) has only a handful of inhabitants and plenty of atmospheric alleys and streets to explore. Much of the old village is preserved within the absorbing Gold Ecological Park , an industrial heritage area that covers the western half of the valley.

The narrow backstreets of JIUFEN (九份; jiŭfèn) are generally vehicle-free and, away from the busier areas, local life proceeds remarkably undisturbed. Most visitors get off the bus adjacent to the Keting Parking Area at the top end of town, proceeding downhill straight into Jishan Street (基山街; jīshān jiē) to gorge on its vast array of snacks . However, if you fancy some exercise before tucking in, it’s not far up the road to the trailhead for Mount Keelung (基隆山; jīlóngshān). On a fine day the short but steep hike to the summit (588m) offers a spectacular panorama of both Jiufen and Jinguashi (allow 30min for an easy hike up).

Back in town, if you keep walking along Jinshan Street you’ll eventually reach Jiufen’s most picturesque corner, Shuqi Road (豎崎路; shùqí lù), actually a series of stone steps slicing through the middle of town and lined with teahouses and old buildings. Walk downhill to the junction with Qingpian Road, turn left along the road and you’ll eventually come to a small square in front of the entrance to Wufankeng (五番坑; wŭfānkēng) or No. 5 Mine, an evocative relic of Jiufen’s mining days – it’s locked up but you can still peer through the bars. Retrace your steps to Shuqi Road and a short walk in the other direction along Qingpian you’ll see gaudy Chenghuang Temple (城隍廟; chénghuáng miào), housing Jiufen’s City God. Continuing downhill, back on Shuqi Road, you’ll end up at a junction on the main road, with the bus stop on the opposite side.

Prisoner of war camps in Taiwan

Thailand’s “death railway” is notorious in the English-speaking world (in part thanks to the film Bridge on the River Kwai ), but few people are aware that the Japanese operated at least fifteen POW camps in Taiwan during World War II. More than 4300 men were incarcerated on the island, most of them British or Commonwealth troops captured in Hong Kong or Singapore, Dutch from Indonesia and Americans from the Philippines. Life was as brutal for the POWs here as anywhere else in Asia, with each camp revolving around a system of forced labour: in Camp No. 1, also known as Kinkaseki (金瓜石戰俘營; jīnguāshí zhànfúyíng), near Jinguashi, prisoners were forced to work in the Japanese copper mine in appalling conditions, while those at Taichu Camp (Camp No. 2), near Taichung, worked on a massive flood channel – many died from starvation, disease and ill-treatment. The camps were largely forgotten after the war, but thanks to a long campaign by former prisoners and expats living in Taiwan, a memorial was erected at the Kinkaseki site in 1997, and in 1999 the Taiwan POW Camps Memorial Society was formed to research all POW camps on the island ( w www.powtaiwan.org ). Several plaques have since been erected all over Taiwan, and a short memorial service takes place at Kinkaseki every year around November 11.

The port city of KEELUNG (基隆; jīlóng), sandwiched between verdant mountains and northern Taiwan’s best natural harbour, is a strategic location that has been fought over by foreign powers since the seventeenth century. Though it’s a typically modern Taiwanese city, home to around 400,000 people, its setting is picturesque and there’s plenty to see: numerous fortresses , a legacy of the city’s violent past, the Fairy Cave , one of Taiwan’s most atmospheric shrines, an easy-to-navigate night market and the country’s largest and most illuminating Ghost Festival , held every August.

The Spanish first established an outpost on Heping Island near Keelung in 1626, when the area was inhabited by the Ketagalan , who called it “Kelang”. In 1642 the Dutch kicked out the Spaniards after a bloody siege, but they abandoned their last stronghold in Taiwan in 1668. Chinese immigrants began to arrive in large numbers in 1723 and the town became an important port in the nineteenth century, making it a regular target for foreign powers; during the 1841 Opium War a British squadron shelled the harbour, while in the Sino-French War the city was occupied by the French for eight months. The harbour was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing at the end of World War II, and the postwar years saw a gradual rebuilding of its facilities – it’s now Taiwan’s second-biggest container port after Kaohsiung.

The Buddhist temples of the Lion’s Head Mountain Scenic Area (獅頭山國家風景區; shītóushān guójiā fēngjǐngqū) have been attracting pilgrims since the Qing dynasty. The area is shaped like a rectangle, with an area of 242 square kilometres divided between Miaoli and Hsinchu counties. Its most accessible hiking trails and temples are clustered around Lion’s Head Mountain ( shītóushān ) itself, in the northern half of the area, and along the Zhonggang River Valley just to the south. The region is also the home of the Saisiyat people. The other main section worth checking out is Emei Lake , dominated by the immense statue of Maitreya Buddha , one of Taiwan’s highlights.

Taiwan’s rugged coastline between Danshui and Keelung falls within the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area (北海岸及觀音山國家風景區; běihǎiàn jí guānyīn guójiāfēngjǐngqū), easily accessible from Taipei and a popular destination for day-trips. The northeast corner has the best scenery, with highlights including the Dharma Drum Mountain monastery, Yeliu Geopark’s fascinating rock formations and the entrancing modern sculptures at the Juming Museum .

Just to the north of the fishing village of YELIU (野柳; yěliŭ) lies Yeliu Geopark (野柳地質公園; yĕliŭ dìzhì gōngyuán), home to a series of bizarre geological formations. The park lies on Yeliu Cape and commands stunning views across the bay to Jinshan and Yangmingshan beyond – hike to the end of the headland and you’ll usually have the place to yourself. Unique rock formations litter the cape, the result of years of weathering and seismic activity – the small visitor centre at the entrance shows twelve-minute English videos on the geology of the area. From here, well-marked trails lead along the 1.7km headland past all of the most famous formations: rocks that resemble tofu and ginger, the unique and mystifying candle rocks and the ubiquitous mushroom rocks, the most famous of which is the Queen’s Head (女王頭; nǚwángtóu) – the original has become so weathered there’s a fibre-glass replica.

The Northeast and Yilan Coast National Scenic Area (東北角暨宜蘭海岸國家風景區; dōngběijiǎo jì yílán hǎiàn guójiā fēngjǐngqū) incorporates some of Taiwan’s most spectacular coastal scenery, stretching 102.5km from Nanya, just east of Jiufen, to Suao. Accessible by bus or train, the area can be covered as a series of lengthy day-trips from Taipei or Keelung, though Fulong , with its attractive beach , is a gateway to the region (and home to the Scenic Area visitor centre ) and a more convenient base for longer stays. Highlights include the network of hiking trails between Bitou Cape and Longdong and the surfing hotspot of Daxi . To the south, the towns of Jiaoxi and Luodong (just outside the Scenic Area proper) are worthy detours before heading on Hualien.

Some 20km south of Daxi, the inland resort town of JIAOXI (礁溪; jiāoxī) is best known for its hot springs and the spectacular waterfalls just outside the city. Buses drop you on Jiaoxi Road, a short walk from the train station on Wenquan Road. You can pick up taxis at the latter for the 5km ride to the Wufengqi Falls (五峰旗瀑布; wŭfēngqí pùbù), among the most impressive in Taiwan. If you have time, you can walk through town (via Deyang Road) and up Wufeng Road, but only the last section is pleasant and there’s always a lot of traffic.

The falls consist of three separate cascades, with the upper two thin threads of water plummeting dramatically over sheer, moss-smothered bluffs at least 30m high – the first falls are the highest and most spectacular. A paved pathway leads some 550m to the top, but it’s a steep climb. Just before the trailhead is a line of food stalls selling an assortment of snacks and drinks, usually including the area’s famed crop of kumquats ( jīnzǎo ). Make sure you take your taxi driver’s number if you want a ride back.

The Northern Cross-Island Highway (北部橫貫公路; běibù héngguàn guānglù; Provincial Highway 7) is one of three spectacular routes that cross the mountainous interior of Taiwan, connecting the western plains with the east coast. The northern route starts in Daxi , around 35km south of Taipei, and follows the Dahan River before crossing the lofty Xueshan range and joining the main Yilan to Lishan road at Qilan , 120km away in Yilan county.

The official starting point for the Northern Cross-Island Highway is the historic town of DAXI (大溪; dàxī), worth a pit-stop for its two old streets lined with ornate Chinese baroque architecture (this Daxi is not to be confused with the east-coast surfing centre). From the bus station, Zhongyang Road (中央路; zhōngyāng lù) is to the left of the main entrance, crammed with small stores and a daily wet market in the mornings. Walk north up here to the end and you should hit Heping Road (和平路; hépíng lù), Daxi’s gorgeous “old street”, crammed with craft stores, teashops and restaurants. The elaborate facades on display are some of the best preserved in Taiwan, most dating from the grand redevelopment of the town that began in 1912, the finely carved arches and beams etched with the names of the trading companies that once operated here. Many of the stores sell Daxi’s most celebrated snack, preserved tofu ( dòugān ), which is usually flavoured and much tastier than it sounds – Hwang Ryh Shiang (黃日香; huáng rì xiāng) at 56 Heping Rd is one of the oldest and most popular tofu sellers.

Just south of Jiufen, the scenic PINGXI BRANCH RAIL LINE (平溪支線; píngxī zhīxiàn) makes another rewarding day-trip from Taipei, winding its way almost 13km up the Keelung River valley to the atmospheric village of Jingtong and passing through the old mining communities of Pingxi and Shifen . For much of the twentieth century this was the heart of Taiwan’s coal industry , and, though the mines have all now closed, you’ll find several reminders of its industrial past scattered around the valley. These days however, it’s the mountain scenery, hiking trails and waterfalls that attract most of the tourists. The valley is also the location for one of Taiwan’s most captivating lantern festivals .

PINGXI (平溪; píngxī) is the seventh stop on the Pingxi Branch Rail Line and one of the valley’s most atmospheric villages, though there’s not much to see unless you visit during the Lantern Festival (Jan or Feb) – the village (along with Shifen) is home to one of Taiwan’s most enchanting spectacles, the release of hundreds of “heavenly lanterns”, or tiāndēng . At other times you can buy and launch individual lanterns from shops that line the main road towards Jingtong – try no. 67 or 68.

Pingxi is also surrounded by tantalizing hiking trails . Walk through the village and across the river to the main road – turn left here and in a few metres you should pass a signposted trail on the right leading to Putuo Mountain (普陀山; pŭtuóshān; 450m) and Xiaozi Mountain (孝子山; xiàozǐshān; 360m), both just 1km away (allow 2hr round-trip). The summit of the latter is one of the most dramatic on the island; a steep tower of rock scaled by steel ladders – the views are impressive, but don’t try the climb on a wet day.

From Ruifang, the village of SHIFEN (十分; shífèn) is the fourth stop on the Pingxi Line, swamped at the weekends by tourists that come primarily to gawp at its celebrated waterfall . The falls are back towards Ruifang, on the eastern side of Shifen, Shifen Waterfall (十分瀑布; shífèn pùbù) is fifteen minutes from the visitor centre along a trail that starts at the back of the building and crosses the river twice before rejoining the rail tracks. En route you’ll pass Eyeglass Hole Waterfall (眼鏡洞瀑布; yǎnjìngdòng pùbù), named after the two hollows that have been eroded into the rock behind it. The main falls are 15m high and 30m wide, not quite Niagara, but impressive nonetheless, and wonderfully photogenic, especially in full flood.

Tucked away in the south of Miaoli County, SANYI (三義; sānyì) is Taiwan’s woodcarving centre, some fifty minutes from Hsinchu by train – trains from Taipei take two-and-a-half hours, making day-trips possible (Taichung is also just 30min away). Apart from the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum , the town’s main attractions are its numerous woodcarving ( mùdiāo ) shops, selling a vast range of work from religious icons to kitsch souvenirs squarely aimed at the tourist trade. Nearby Shengxing offers some beautiful hiking, historic Hakka teahouses and the photogenic ruin of Longteng Bridge. The village is halfway along a 16km loop of old rail line between Sanyi and Houli (后里; hòulǐ), abandoned in the 1990s.

The attractive Hakka village of Shengxing (勝興; shèngxīng) is particularly appealing in the spring when the area’s distinctive white tung flowers ( tónghuā ) are in bloom. Shengxing was once an important transport hub for the camphor oil industry, but a new tunnel meant main-line trains bypassed the village in the late 1990s. Today the tourist industry is booming, which means weekends and holidays turn the place into a bit of carnival, surrounded by car parks; it's best to visit on a weekday if possible.

An unapologetically rugged reserve of pristine mountain peaks and raging rivers, SHEI-PA NATIONAL PARK (雪霸國家公園; xuěbà guójiā gōngyuán) is one of Asia’s most untouched expanses of wilderness. Stretching across almost 770 square kilometres of the magnificent Xueshan range , Taiwan’s third-largest national park is studded with stunning peaks, 51 of them higher than 3000m – putting them on a par with most of the European Alps. The park’s highest peak is the range’s namesake: Xueshan (Snow Mountain), which at 3886m is the second-tallest mountain in northeast Asia. Despite its lofty height, it’s one of the island’s most accessible and rewarding climbs, with an extremely well-maintained trail that is typically open for most of the year. This path is also a grandiose gateway to the park’s other mountain highlights, such as the precipitous Holy Ridge that extends north from Xueshan to the 3492m Dabajianshan , whose distinctive pyramid shape has made it one of the country’s most celebrated peaks.

Seasonal conditions vary, but in general the best time for climbing in Shei-Pa is October to December and late February to April. The May rains and the frequent typhoons that hit the island from June to September can cause severe damage to the trails, making landslips a concern. Though winters are cold and the main peaks are usually covered with snow from late December to mid-February, for experienced climbers with proper gear and crampons this can be the most rewarding time to visit.
