2021 Tata Safari review, test drive

It’s far removed from the original but the all-new Tata Safari still has a lot of ingredients of interest.

2021 Tata Safari review, test drive

  • Comfortable third row
  • Feels tough

We Don't Like

  • No AWD option
  • Steering feels heavy at low speeds

What is it?

We’ve known it as the Tata H7X. We’ve known it as the Tata Buzzard. We’ve known it as the Tata Gravitas. But the much-awaited three row version of the Harrier is finally set to go on sale as the all-new Tata Safari. Tata Motors executives say this SUV was always envisioned to bring back the Safari moniker. The little name game was to keep the secret from getting out too soon.

Social media commenters have had strong opinions on the applicability of the legendary Safari name to a front-wheel drive, monocoque SUV but we’ll shut out the noise and see the SUV for what it is.

What’s it like on the outside?

And what it is immediately identifiable as, at least from up front, is a derivative of the Tata Harrier. The split headlamp arrangement is shared and the only real difference is the new, chrome-finished tri-arrow pattern for the Safari’s grille.

tata safari top car

From other angles, though, you won’t mistake one for the other. Designed to accommodate a third row of seats, the Safari sports a higher roofline, a longer rear overhang, features a full-size rear quarter glass, and the tail-end is more upright too. Even the tail lights, though similar in treatment, are different.

tata safari top car

Adding some flavor to the Tata are its chunky roof rails that are styled to suggest a stepped roof, somewhat of a trademark element on the original Safari. In dimensions, the new Safari is 80mm taller and 63mm longer than a Harrier, though width and wheelbase are unchanged. All in all, the new Safari has a great stance that’s only helped by the 18-inch diamond cut alloy wheels. Curiously, while the rims are a size up on the Harrier’s, they’re of the same design.

What’s it like on the inside?

Inside, things are familiar. If you've been behind the wheel of a Tata Harrier, you'll immediately feel at home in the Tata Safari. The smart-looking dashboard is common to the two models but what brings in the necessary distinction on the top-spec Safari is its Oyster White interior theme. Sure, the cabin looks really upmarket as a result but buyers with a fetish for spotlessness will really struggle to keep the light leatherette seats clean. A welcome inclusion on the top-spec Safari is the easy-to-use electronic parking brake that comes in place of the cumbersome thrust lever-like manual handbrake.

tata safari top car

Just as on the updated Harrier, you get a dominating view of the road and much of what you touch inside is high quality. Panel fit is also much improved from the first of the Harriers but some ergonomic issues persist. For instance, the centre console fouls with the driver’s left knee. You’d also wish Tata updated the infotainment system. The 8.8-inch touchscreen looks a bit small by today's standards and even things like the rear view camera could have seen a few more pixels added.

tata safari top car

On the plus side, the features list is long and is headlined (quite literally so) by a panoramic sunroof, a sweet-sounding JBL sound system and a powered driver’s seat. Tata has also included connected tech that lets you remotely keep an eye on your car, but there’s no wireless charging onboard. 6 airbags and hill-descent control are exclusive to the top-spec XZ+ versions but it’s commendable that ESC is standard fit.

What’s it like on space and comfort?

It’s when you move to the middle row that you’ll sense a link between Safaris old and new. Like the original, the new Safari sports theatre-like seating in which the second row seats are positioned higher than the ones up front. This elevated seating gets you excellent visibility not only out of the side windows but the front windscreen as well. As standard, the Safari gets seven seats with a bench-type middle row. Seat comfort is superb and the slightly higher H point (relative to the Harrier) has translated to a spot-on seating position. The Safari also goes one-up on the Harrier with the option to slide the 60:40 seats back, and if you want even more room a ‘Boss mode’ lever lets you adjust the co-driver’s seat from the back.

tata safari top car

Also on offer on top-spec Safaris is a six seat option that brings in captain’s chairs for the middle row. These seats are beautifully cushioned, boast a wide range of adjustment (there’s Boss mode too) and a fold-down armrest is included as well. It’s just that passengers with larger frames will find the seats aren’t the widest around. What’s also missing are sunblinds for the rear windows and locating the USB slots near the centre tunnel is quite the task.

Switching focus to the third row, the news is good. Access to the rear-most section of the cabin is via the narrow passage between the captains’ chairs or, in the case of the seven seater Safaris, from the kerb side middle row seat. This seat’s one touch mechanism for fold and tumble, and the damped operation is impressive but the aperture isn’t all that large so you will have to contort a bit to get to the third row.

tata safari top car

Once in place, you’ll appreciate the space on offer. Average-sized adults will be able to find a happy legroom compromise with the middle row passenger and even the seating position is not as knees-up as in typical third rows. The relatively large windows help the feeling of space though the air-con vents positioned on the sill seem like an afterthought. Tata has done well, however, to pack in blower control and 2 USB charging slots for the last row.

tata safari top car

Traveling with a full house does, sadly, mean no room for luggage. Lifting the heavy, manually operated tail gate is a task and isn’t worth the effort given the mere 73 litres on offer. You can split and fold the third row seats to free up more luggage room when you need. The middle row seats on 7 seat versions can also be folded flat to create a large cargo bay.

What’s it like to drive?

The Tata Safari uses the same 170hp, 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine as the Harrier, and is offered with the same 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions too. Unsurprisingly, the driving experience is very similar too. There’s good power but in the case of the manual you have to contend with a heavy clutch that’s not progressive enough and gears that need some effort to slot.

tata safari top car

Without a doubt, it’s the Safari automatic that is the one to buy. The Fiat-sourced diesel engine branded Kryotec 170 by Tata works best with the Hyundai-sourced 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. The gearbox is well in-tune with the engine’s characteristics, gearshifts are timely and smooth and it’s also responsive enough to manual shifts via the gear lever. As before, the engine does groan and moan when you load it and sounds a bit gravelly when starting out but things settle down quickly enough. What you’ll like is the wide spread of power and how effortlessly the engine brings the large Safari up to speed. Driving modes, namely Eco, City and Sport, that alter power also help fine-tune the driving experience.

tata safari top car

Talking performance, our quick timing runs did reveal the Safari, that’s heavier by 75kg, to be just as brisk as the Harrier. What the Safari feels like with a full load of passengers is something we’ll put to the test soon. On the subject, Tata has beefed up the Safari’s braking system to deal with the higher gross weight. The Harrier’s rear drum brakes have made way for discs and resultantly the Safari does shed speed more effectively. That said, the bite point is too low on the long travel brake pedal and this can be disconcerting in panic braking scenarios.

Tata could have also worked on the Safari’s steering. It’s a touch on the heavier side at low speeds and is also prone to kickback. At higher speeds, there’s an inconsistency too – the slack at the straight ahead position is followed by an overtly sharp response. What you will like is the ease with which the Safari can cover large distances. It feels confident even if it’s not quite as well tied down as, say, a Jeep Compass. Notably, Tata has tweaked the suspension for added load and the slightly softer setup has enhanced low speed bump absorption. The Safari really does make light work of potholes and bad roads, and it’s in settings as this that the Tata’s tough build shines through. Don’t forget, there is some Land Rover DNA in the Safari’s underpinnings.

tata safari top car

Now for the elephant in the room. Is the new Safari, Safari enough when there are no roads? With its monocoque construction, and front wheel drive layout, it’s a radical departure from script to the old body-on-frame and 4x4 model. Frankly, any soul-searching missions to ‘reclaim your life’ can’t be too extreme. For its part, the Safari does get ‘Wet’ and ‘Rough’ Terrain Response modes and ground clearance is enough to tackle a mild trail. Tata says it will look at an all-wheel drive option if there’s sufficient demand.

Should you buy one?

With Safari prices ranging between Rs 14.69-21.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), Tata’s three-row SUV commands a premium of about Rs 70,000-1.35 lakh over the Harrier, depending on the variant. The Safari goes up against the MG Hector Plus, and will also see fresh competition from the new Mahindra XUV500 and seven seat Creta over the year.

tata safari top car

The new Safari is attractive, plush and well equipped, and with a genuinely useable third row is it makes a compelling case for itself. Sure, it’s not a versatile 4x4 as the original Safari was but see it as the three-row SUV for the family that it is, and you’ll find that Tata’s new flagship scores where it matters.

Tata Safari Overview

Safari specifications & features.

Explore an in-depth overview of the Tata Safari specifications and features, offering comprehensive details on its engine choices, fuel efficiency, torque, power, transmission, dimensions, and trunk capacity. Additionally, gain insights into the car's advanced safety features and infotainment system.

What's New?

The facelifted Tata Harrier and Safari have been launched in India. The Tata Harrier facelift is priced from Rs 15.49 lakh with prices for the automatic starting from Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Harrier Dark Edition is priced from Rs 19.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The Safari facelift's prices, meanwhile, start from Rs 16.19 lakh with the automatics and Dark Edition variants both priced from Rs 20.69 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom). The prices are introductory and valid for a limited period. The SUVs are priced at a premium over the outgoing models but pack in a lot more tech than before.

Starting with the exterior, both SUVs now get greater differentiation in design. Both SUVs retain the split headlamp design but now feature full-width lightbars up top with the main headlamps positioned lower down. Both SUVs also get different design bumpers with the Harrier featuring more triangular housings for the headlamps to the Safari’s more rectangular housings. The Safari also gets a silver-finished faux skid-plate element while the Harrier gets a black-finished piece. At the rear, both SUVs get revised tail lamps with a lightbar element along with redesigned bumpers.

Inside, both SUVs get a revised dashboard design with new control surfaces and more tech. Top models now feature a new 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system along with a new 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Furthermore, each trim level – Persona in Tata speak – gets its own unique interior trim finishes to stand out. There’s a lot to talk about by way of features as well with both SUVs packing in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, powered tailgates, panoramic sunroof with mood lights, electronic parking brake with auto hold, ventilated front seats, ventilated seats in second row (Safari), powered driver seat and more.

Tata has also revised the variant names going from the previous XE, XM, XT and XZ variants to using Smart, Pure, Adventure, Fearless and Accomplished. As with the outgoing model, Tata is offering both SUVs with the Dark Edition variants.

Expert Review on Tata Safari

  • Solid Road Presence
  • Spacious And Comfortable Cabin
  • Well-Specced With A Host Of Features
  • Heavy Weight Is Quite Noticeable In Traffic
  • Automatic Gearbox Could Be More Responsive
  • Infotainment System Feels Not The Most Reliable

Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel.

How’s the Design?

The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same.

How does it perform?

The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.

How’s the mileage?

  • Diesel Manual- 16.14 kmpl
  • Diesel Automatic- 14.08 kmpl

How’s the driving experience?

The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches.

What’s the interior like?

The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss  mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well.

Tech and infotainment

The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more.

Safety equipment

The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control.

Which variant to buy?

You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes.

Which cars compete in the segment?

The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space.

Verdict (Value for Money)

The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. If you talk about a muscular and attractive three-row SUV with good performance, then the Tata Safari certainly makes a strong case for itself.

Engine and Performance

Left Front Three Quarter

The 2023 avatar of the Tata Safari retains the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic unit. This motor meets BS6 Phase 2 emissions standards and produces 168bhp and 350Nm of peak torque. The automatic transmission still works very well, with the shifts that remain quick, smooth, and in sync with the engine’s characteristics and power delivery. There is enough torque for pulling from low speeds, and the transmission's responsiveness to both upshifts and downshifts makes the driving experience enjoyable. It also gets paddle shifters, and they respond well, making the driving experience more engaging.

Engine Shot

The Eco, City, and Sport driving modes remain unchanged, offering responsive throttle inputs. The Safari has sufficient load-carrying and people-hauling capabilities in both urban and highway settings, and it can overtake effortlessly despite its size and weight. This Tata SUV remains planted and stable at triple-digit speeds, and its performance is not compromised despite being larger and heavier than the Harrier. The terrain mode selector, which efficiently alters the response through software maps, has been retained too. However, some off-road enthusiasts may argue that all-wheel drive (AWD) would have made the SUV more capable in hilly regions and slippery conditions. Nonetheless, our experience suggests that the Safari can tackle trails and rough terrain with poise for the most part.

Drive Mode Buttons/Terrain Selector

Ride and Handling

Right Side View

The Safari's high ground clearance, tall stance, and well-tuned suspension allow it to effortlessly absorb bumps, potholes, and ruts on broken roads. Occupants are not unsettled, and there is minimal noise inside the cabin — whether driving at low or high speeds. Its robust build quality and Land Rover underpinnings are evident in its ride and handling.

Left Front Three Quarter

Previous Safari owners complained about the heavy hydraulic steering, but the new electronic power steering has addressed this issue. It feels lighter at low speeds but adds weight as the speed increases, as is also noticeable in the Sport mode. The ADAS, meanwhile, is not intrusive and gently guides the car back into the marked lane if it starts to veer off. Then, all the disc brakes provide good stopping power and work well with the emergency automatic braking system. Overall, both systems functioned flawlessly, with the adaptive cruise control responding to commands instantly.

Left Rear Three Quarter

Exterior Design

Right Front Three Quarter

Despite being a facelift, the new model has been significantly redesigned, giving it a concept-like appearance and a more upmarket feel than its predecessor. The new single grille is unique, with accents that match the exterior body colour on this version. The connected LED bar is a welcome addition, and the new squared-off headlamp housings on the re-sculpted bumper further distinguish it from the previous model.

Right Rear Three Quarter

Moreover, the new 19-inch wheels have an attractive design similar to the Sierra concept's wheels showcased at this year's Auto Expo. The rear section has been updated with tweaked taillights and a new LED bar that gets the welcome and goodbye animation in line with the front. There's also a faux skid plate on the redesigned bumper with vertically stacked reflectors and reverse light housing.

Side Badge

Interior and Features

Dashboard

The interior has also been updated, but the overall design remains largely unchanged. The most noticeable change is the new steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, which was first seen on the new Nexon. Tata has also addressed our previous criticism of this new steering’s horn placement, which was awkward and difficult to use. The horn has now been repositioned and is more responsive to inputs.

Front Row Seats

The new Safari also features touch controls for the AC. Other major updates to the dashboard include a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and a fully digital instrument cluster. The latter gets readable fonts, fast response time, and high customisability, and is packed with information, including ADAS. The touchscreen is also highly responsive and has a clean UI, but it lacks haptic feedback and knobs for quick control.

Front Row Seats

The seating layout remains unchanged, with ample space in all rows. However, a major improvement that elevates its interior's premium feel is the high-quality materials used for the upholstery, dashboard, and most surfaces. Nothing feels cheap or out of place, and the cabin remains robust. The Safari has been known for its 'boss mode', and it continues to offer a laid-back seating position with power adjustments. The seats also get adjustable headrests for enhanced comfort. To further delight passengers, ventilated seats are now available in both rows, which will be a blessing in our hot and humid climate.

Second Row Seats

The carmaker has also taken the safety aspect up a notch. For example, all variants/personas now come standard with six airbags, while the top-spec version gets an additional driver's knee airbag. In addition, the Safari gets a 360-degree camera and a host of ADAS features, including new ones like adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, high beam assist, lane change alert, and lane departure warning. Other ADAS features include door open alert, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Additionally, other important safety features include rear collision warning, forward collision warning, and autonomous emergency braking, which worked effectively. The SUV also gets disc brakes on all four wheels.

Third Row Seats

The new Safari is also equipped with a new e-call feature for emergency assistance. With a touch of a button, the breakdown call can notify the roadside assistance service. Other impressive tech features that worked flawlessly include the new TFT cluster, terrain mode selector with TFT screen, audio controls compatible with Alexa, powered tailgate opening, and the connected car experience. Finally, whether you choose the six- or seven-seater version, every variant, from the entry-level Smart to the top-spec Accomplished+, offers a good variety of exterior colour options and material choices.

Instrument Cluster

Tata Motors wants to broaden the appeal of the new Safari with a wider range of exterior colours, including a segment-first dual-tone option, and a plethora of new features. The Safari retains its macho appearance, making it a symbol of authority while offering a premium and spacious cabin. Prospective buyers also get new technology and added connectivity, all while cocooned in safety. Tata Motors also has kept the premium reasonable, making the new Safari an easy choice for buyers, given its many appealing features.

When a Tata car scored a zero-star safety rating

T he year was 2014! The now-discontinued Tata Nano was crash-tested at Global NCAP for safety assessment. The 'people's car' had a rather dismal show unlike the present-day Tata cars, which are rated handsomely when it comes to safety.

For reference, the Tata Nano was launched in India in 2009. It was officially discontinued in 2020.

To assess the safety, the entry-level variant of the Tata Nano was chosen. The car had no airbags. Crash-tested at a speed of 64kmph, the car scored a zero-star rating in both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection. Even the bodyshell of the car was judged as unstable.

That was 2014. In 2024, Tata Motors is making the safest cars in India, if we go by the safety assessment ratings they have garnered at Global NCAP as well as Bharat NCAP.

The flagship Tata Safari and the Tata Harrier have scored a five-star safety rating at both Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP. The popular Tata Nexon recently achieved a five-star safety rating at Global NCAP. All three SUVs scored five stars in both adult occupant protection and child occupant protection.

The Tata cars have had impressive performances even as the testing norms have become stricter.

Global NCAP's crash test protocols now assess frontal and side impact protection for all models, as well as the presence of electronic stability control (ESC). Pedestrian protection and side impact pole protection assessments are required for vehicles scoring the highest star ratings.

The Safari, Harrier and Nexon come with six airbags and ESC as standard, among various other safety features.

The Nexon is leading the SUV volume race this fiscal at 157,639 units during the period from April to February. It was also the largest-selling SUV in India in FY23 and FY22 at 172,139 units and 124,130 units, respectively.

Categories Europe , Destinations , Russia

Once known as Leningrad and before that Petrograd, Saint Petersburg, Russia, is the country’s second-largest city. Set next to the Neva River, close to the Baltic Sea, this city is home to over 5 million people.

It’s the world’s northernmost city, founded by Peter the Great and named after Saint Peter the apostle. Once home to the Tsars of Russia, it is today known as the country’s cultural capital.

With iconic sights such as Hermitage Museum, Nevsky Prospect, Peterhof Palace, and so much more, it has a fascinating heritage ripe for exploration. Without further ado, let’s dive into the 13 best things to do in St. Petersburg.

Visit Saint Petersburg, Europe´s most beautiful city

Top Things to do in St. Petersburg, Russia

St. Petersburg, Europe, has grown into one of the top tourist destinations on the continent. Although it might get very cold in winter, there are still plenty of things to do – and the summers are absolutely perfect! Saint Petersburg is one of the prettiest cities in all of Europe .

Keep reading for some of my favorite choices.

1. Visit The World Famous Hermitage Museum

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

One of the city’s most popular attractions (with over 3 million items in its esteemed collection), State Hermitage Museum showcases everything from fine art to ancient artifacts.

Even if you don’t plan on entering inside, the exterior is an architectural gem in itself. The columns are all in white with green/gold facades that can be viewed from the river or Palace Square.

If you’re visiting St. Petersburg, Russia, your trip would not be complete without stopping past this world-famous landmark. It’s also a great activity to do no matter what time of year you are visiting – and a perfect way to escape those cold Russian winter days.

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

There are six buildings in the museum complex in total. Five of which – Winter Palace, Small Hermitage, Old Hermitage, New Hermitage, and Hermitage Theatre – can be accessed by the public.

Within, you’ll be treated to Egyptian collections, artifacts dating from ancient Mesopotamia, and classical Greek jewelry, pottery, and sculptures. This is any historical culture lover’s dream.

Keep exploring, and you will find collections of prehistoric relics from the Palaeolithic era to the Iron Ages, European fine arts, Impressionist works, Catherine the Great’s personal collections, and so much more.

In fact, you’ll need an entire day or possibly longer to explore this incredible museum complex. If you only have limited time in St. Petersburg, be sure to add this museum to your itinerary! There are also guided tours available if you want a more educational experience.

Did you know? The Hermitage Museum is the world’s second-largest art museum.

2. Take in a Performance at Mariinsky Theatre

The Neoclassical Mariinsky Theatre is home to Russia’s revered opera and ballet companies.

The theatre – named after the wife of Tsar Alexandra II, Empress Maria Alexandrovna – has been here since 1860 when it was known as the Kirov Theatre.

This magnificent building, since it opened, has hosted stage performances and premieres from Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky and famous ballets such as Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Today, in addition to hosting live performances, the theatre has its own record label, which focuses on releasing music by Russian composers Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov.

If you enjoy the arts and are going to be in St. Petersburg for several days, book tickets to see a world-class performance – you won’t be disappointed.

3. See Jewelled Eggs at the Faberge Museum

The House of Faberge was founded in St. Petersburg in 1842 by Gustav Faberge. Originally a jeweler, he became famous for designing jewel-encrusted eggs for the Tsars of Russia and is arguably the most famous goldsmith of the modern era.

Today, you can view these iconic collection pieces in the Faberge Museum. It showcases 4,000 items in total, including Faberge Easter eggs, jewelry, silverware, home decor, and fantasy-themed objects.

The incredible jeweled eggs are famous all over the world, and there are several museums dedicated to them. But if you want to learn about Gustav Faberge, his family, and how it all began, this is the museum to visit. You can purchase a ticket in person or online.

4. Spend an Hour Canal Cruising

St. Petersburg is built on 42 islands, and once upon a time (before bridges were constructed), cruising was the only way to navigate the city.

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

On a Golden Ring boat tour, you’ll see some of St. Petersburg’s iconic sights along the Kryukov Canal, including St. Nicholas Cathedral, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, and the Mariinsky theatre.

Saint Isaac's Cathedral in central Saint Petersburg.

You’ll dip beneath the famous colored bridges on Neva River whilst enjoying views of Peter and Paul Fortress, Vasilyevsky Island, and the Summer Garden. This is truly one of the most breathtaking ways to take in all the beauty that St. Petersburg has to offer.

This tour also only takes around an hour, so you’ll have plenty of time to revisit your favorite spots throughout the day!

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,Hermitage Museum,russia

5. Discover Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Saint Petersburg,Russia,Europe,Church

One of St. Petersburg’s architectural masterpieces is the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood.

This former Russian Orthodox Church was completed in 1907 and is built in Baroque, Neoclassical, and Russian Revival design. It is one of the city’s main attractions, with ornate domes, intricate frescoes, and 7,500 square meters of mosaics inside.

If you don’t wish to enter, you can gain incredible views from Griboedov Canal. But if you do venture inside, you’ll be rewarded with interior frescoes and mosaic works depicting biblical scenes and figures created by celebrated Russian artists of the time.

The Church of the Saviour of Blood is built on the spot where Emperor Alexander 2 was assassinated in 1881 – hence the name. So, not only will you be able to appreciate the fine architectural designs, but also explore an important part of Russian history.

6. Take a Rooftop Walk-in St. Petersburg

If you have viewed the city from canals and rivers, try it from the rooftops! You can take a guided rooftop walk in the city, seeing streets and skylines from an elevated perspective.

One particular tour to highlight is the Official Rooftops Excursion of St. Petersburg. Just a few minutes from Nevsky Prospect, these sites offer vistas of Fontanka River and Trinity Cathedral – and that’s just the first roof.

The second roof boasts views of St. Petersburg’s old center, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, and the Church on Spilled Blood.

This is a truly incredible way to see the city in all its glory, plus the tour provides you with binoculars so you can see everything in great detail.

7. Admire Nevsky Prospect’s Magnificent Architecture

Saint Petersburg,St.Petersburg,russia,

The main street of St. Petersburg is Nevsky Prospect. Begin at the intersection at Stroganov Palace before venturing to Kazan Cathedral. While you walk, take in the monuments dedicated to Catherine the Great and browse goods at The Passage – Nevsky Avenue’s premier department store.

This store was quite the trailblazer. It opened its doors in the late 1840s and was one of the first buildings in Russia to use gas for lighting. Then, in 1900, an electric station was installed on an underground floor.

Once you’ve finished shopping and enjoyed a fresh cup of coffee, continue to the Russian National Library – the oldest public library in Russia – and Alexandrinsky Theatre (which was built for the Imperial troupe of Petersburg).

8. Visit the Island of Peter and Paul Fortress

Peter and Paul Fortress saint petersburg

Set on an island connected by bridges, Peter and Paul Fortress is instantly recognizable from its needle spire, which dominates the skyline. The fortress was originally built to defend the maritime city from Swedish invaders.

Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral

However, Peter the Great defeated the opposition before it was even completed! It has since served as a military center and prison for political dissenters and, latterly, as a museum.

Inside the vast complex, you can see Peter and Paul Cathedral, visit the resting place of the Romanovs, and watch military processions or the firing of the noon-day gun.

It’s a great day trip for anyone interested in Russian, maritime or military history. There are also plenty of group walking tours available.

9. Sample Russian Vodka in a Ryumochnye

A visit to Russia wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local drink – vodka, and the best place to do this is in a Ryumochnye. This is a specific style of 19th-century Russian drinking house that not only offers some of Russia’s best vodka but also a short history lesson.

You could call it a bar, but it’s more than that – most mainstream Ryumochnye have a definite Soviet vibe and are places for working men to kick back and enjoy vodka with their buddies.

Beverages come in bottles or shot form, and some places offer self-service and snacks.

If that sounds too hardcore for your taste, there are updated versions of Ryumochnye in the city, like Mayak in St. Petersburg, where you can gain a similar experience.

10. Enjoy local Saint Petersburg Craft Beer

saint petersburg craft beer

Although most people think of vodka when visiting Russia, you can also enjoy some of the best craft beer in Saint Petersburg . Russia’s second-largest city has an exciting, rapidly growing craft beer scene, in part due to its history and geography.

Historically, the Russian empire was influenced by Northern Europe, and the Dutch & English beer-drinking culture eventually made its way here. Today, Saint Petersburg is home to a growing number of modern microbreweries, cool taprooms, and stylish bars.

craft beer saint petersburg

Saint Petersburg is also home to Stepan Razin Brewery, the oldest brewery in Russia (now, of course, owned by Heiniken). It opened in 1795, but today the building is known as the Saint Petersburg Beer Museum, showcasing the history of beer in Russia and the Soviet Union.

Russia’s largest and most popular brewery, Baltika, is also located in Saint Petersburg, and it’s possible to take a tour of their huge brewery.

11. See the Majestic Catherine Palace

A stately palace of blue and gold, Catherine’s Palace is located 26 kilometers south of St. Petersburg. Named after the wife of Peter the Great, this place was originally a two-story modest building commissioned in 1717.

The exterior, which stretches for one kilometer in circumference, is surrounded by woodlands, lawns, gilded balconies, and reliefs. However, the interiors are even more impressive.

With great halls, a white dining room, an amber room, and more. It’s the perfect place to step back into history and discover what life was like as a Russian aristocracy.

12. Explore Peterhof Palace

peterhof saint petersburg

If you’re going to visit Catherine Palace, you should tour Peterhof too. It’s a 40-minute drive away, but you can even take a hydrofoil speed boat from right behind the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg center.

Sitting close to the Baltic Sea, Peterhof Palace was constructed by Peter the Great to be Russia’s version of Versailles. The opulent residence surrounded by sculptures, fountains, and tiered staircases leading to the grand entrance evokes mystery and the history of a bygone era.

Inside it is lavishly decorated with dazzling chandeliers, one-of-a-kind artworks and beautiful ceiling frescoes.

Peterhof garden.

On a guided tour, you can learn more about the palace’s history. Discover the Throne Room, Portrait Hall and Peter the Great’s Oak Study. You’ll see dining rooms set for dinner, grand ballrooms where dancing and gatherings would take place, and décor which defies time.

Peterhof saint petersburg russia

The palace offers great insight into his life and legacy, and if you are interested in history, art and interior design, you’ll love it.

13. Spend a Day by the Finnish Border at Vyborg

Just over an hour from central Saint Petersburg by train is the city of Vyborg. It sits on the Gulf of Finland and was first settled back in the 12th century. The city has been occupied by Finnish and German forces and suffered extensive damage during the Second World War. However, it has since been rebuilt.

It’s a charming center to wander around, with narrow cobbled streets, a medieval castle, and Finnish art nouveau structures sprinkled throughout. An easy day trip from St. Petersburg, it can also serve as a stop-off point if you’re crossing into Finland to continue your adventure.

Want to know more about Saint Petersburg?

Where is St. Petersburg | Is St. Petersburg in Europe?

If you want to know “Where is Saint Petersburg?”, you’ve come to the right place. Beautiful St. Petersburg is located in northern Russia. Russia is a massive country, so it is no surprise that many people want to know “Is Saint Petersburg in Europe?”. The answer is yes.

How to Get to Saint Petersburg

The maritime city is well linked to Europe by air, sea, rail and road. Depending on where you’re traveling from and the rest of your itinerary, you can use one of the following ways to arrive at St. Petersburg.

You can fly into Saint Petersburg through Pulkovo International Airport. There are around 1,100 international flights a week and 1,200 domestic flights operating in and out of the local airport.

Although many flights from European cities to Saint Petersburg are direct, you may have to change flights if flying from further afield.

It’s also possible to travel to St. Petersburg by train. The most popular (and most frequent) routes operate from Moscow, Helsinki, and Tallinn. However, there are options to travel from other areas in central Europe, central Asia, and eastern Europe by rail.

There is a central bus station in Saint Petersburg, with services to and from Moscow, Pskov, Novgorod, Vilnius, Riga , Tallinn and Helsinki. Some of these journeys can be long and arduous.

Therefore, thorough research and choosing the right bus company is important.

Baltic Sea Cruises also operate to St. Petersburg as part of a larger itinerary, and St. Peter Line Ferry sails from Helsinki in Finland and Tallinn in Estonia.

Exploring Saint Petersburg, Russia

Saint Petersburg is the 5th most populous city in Europe and also a leading tourist destination. Although people sometimes forget about Russia, this city is breathtakingly beautiful and provides plenty of cultural and historical attractions.

Now that you know where to go, I hope you have an amazing time in Russia’s most beautiful city.

Which hostel did you stay at? I am potentially thinking of going to Russia for World Cup 2018 after my World Cup trip to Brazil two years ago. Saint Petersburg is one of the host cities, and so I am very interested in learning more about this city and recommendations from fellow travellers who have been.

Christian L.

I stayed at Soul Kitchen Junior, and I will go so far and say its by far the best hostel I have ever stayed at!! Anywhere in the world, no other hostels even get close to it:)

Fireplaces and stoves became an integral part of St. Petersburg houses due to the cold and damp climate. Regardless of the place, be it a front door or a palace, the decoration of almost every one of them is an artistic work. In our material we have tried to show the most sophisticated and striking antiques.

House of the insurance company "Russia"

The building was erected in 1905–1907 by the architects A. A. Gimpel and V. V. Ilyashev. The first floor was taken as a retail space, in particular, before the revolution there was a music store “Ya. Becker. Pianos and grand pianos. ” On the second and third floors are located the offices of the insurance company, and above - residential apartments. A spectacular and textured look to the building was given by a combination of black, red and light grayish-pink stone. Experts note the unusual lining of the first floor, for which they used blocks of red gangut granite.

A large number of ceramic stoves made in factories in Russia, Germany and Finland, and multi-colored floors with various patterns have been preserved in the interiors of the house. According to the legend, the decorations in the parade based on different seasons were created with the personal participation of Nikolai Roerich himself - a Russian artist and mystic philosopher.

After the 1917 revolution, various state institutions, such as the LandRevebumtrest and Snabcontora, were placed in the building. At the moment there is a museum and exhibition center "Rosfoto".

Palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich

Since 1920, the palace became known as the House of Scientists. Here it was possible to preserve in its original form all the interiors of the palace, the pomp of the decorations of the ceremonial halls, the majesty of the grand prince's cabinets.

One of the highlights of the place is the Moorish boudoir, where there is an exquisite fireplace with oriental ornaments and decorations. It is made of Italian marble designed by M. Mesmacher in the workshop of E. Ruggia and S. Maderni.

By the way, another fireplace can be found in the Oak Hall, whose interior has remained virtually unchanged. The walls of the dining room are covered with stucco, skillfully imitating oak carving, thanks to which the appearance of the hall reminds of the traditional national art of patterned decoration of village huts. A bright fireplace immediately attracts attention with its patterns and unusual decoration.

Menshikov Palace

At the Menshikov Palace, which is everywhere decorated with Delft ceramics, you should pay special attention.

One of the stoves is in the bedroom of Varvara Mikhailovna Arsenieva, Alexander Menshikov's sister-in-law. The tiled stove has a tiered form, like most of the palace furnaces of the time. But the uniqueness is that each individual tile represents a whole picture, and the tiles are combined into a single composition with frames and rosettes formed by their corners.

In Anichkov Palace, in the former boudoir of Empress Maria Feodorovna, a painted tiled stove was preserved.

The lining of the furnace is reproduced according to the sketch of M. Mesmacher by his students. Based on the idea of the author, the chimney is decorated with a large panel of tiles, and antique motifs dominate in the painting.

Kelch Mansion (House Lawyer)

Here, the Renaissance, the Gothic and the Rococo have merged together, and the interior decoration is striking at first sight: Italian marble, refined stucco, carved wood, unique sculptures, bronze candelabra, unusual stained glass windows - and all this in Kelch mansion.

There is also a chic fireplace here: it is located in the White Hall, made of light gray Italian marble, created by Maria Lvovna Dillon - the first woman in Russia to graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in the class of sculpture. The incomparable bas-relief of the fireplace “Awakening of Spring” emphasizes the sophistication of the whole composition.

Children's library of history and culture of St. Petersburg

The main pride of the House and the most famous majolica fireplace by the artist MA Vrubel - “Volga and Mikula Selyaninovich” - is located here.

The very first version of the fireplace in this story was made in the Abramtsevo workshop for the Paris exhibition in 1900 by M. A. Vrubel and P. K. Vaulin. Kamin received a gold medal at the exhibition. The very first copy, apparently, was sold, its traces are lost. And Muscovites from various museums and employees of the Museum-Reserve Abramtsevo , where there are collapsible panels on this subject, often come to the fireplace in the library. There is a panel in the Russian Museum. But the color scheme, with a general plot, is completely different. The fireplace in the house Bazhanov details in the plot most. You can distinguish numerous variations on the faces of the Sirin birds. They are all different. This is most likely one of the most recent works by Vaulin and it was not made in Abramtsevo, but here near Petersburg in his workshop around 1909.

House of bourgeois society

In addition to palaces, you can find old fireplaces and stoves in exquisite ceramic finishes and in ordinary St. Petersburg ceremonies.

One of the finest copies of the stoves is located in the House of the bourgeois society, built on the Fontanka embankment in 1910 according to the design of the architect N.K. Pryanishnikov.

The front door is decorated with a tiled stove, the decoration is made of dark blue glazed ceramic tiles, and the facade is decorated with a decor in the form of embossed floral ornament.
