Darkest Hour (formed in 1995) is an American melodic death metal band that formerly drew influences from hardcore punk, best known for their 2014 self-titled album, hailing from Washington, D.C., U.S.

Originally comprised of vocalist John Henry, guitarist Mike Schleibaum, bassist Raul Mayorga, and drummer Matt Maben in 1995, the group's debut release was the 1996 EP “The Misanthrope”. Marked by its creeping tempo, Darkest Hour’s subsequent release, the single “Paths of Despair” found its way on to East Coast Empire Records’ “The Harder They Come” compilation. Following the release of the 1999 EP “The Prophecy Fulfilled” on Art Monk Construction, the band signed with M.I.A. Records, who issued their debut full-length “The Mark of the Judas”. Unfortunately the label went bust shortly after the release, which meant both promotion and distribution for “The Mark of the Judas” was limited.

Despite this, Darkest Hour managed to catch the attention of Victory Records, who issued the group’s sophomore full-length “So Sedated, So Secure” in August 2001. Led by the single “An Epitaph”, after the album’s release Paul Burnette arrived on bass and Scnhleibaum’s friend Mike Garrity assumed lead guitar responsibilities. Adopting a more melodic death metal style, Darkest Hour’s third and fourth LPs “Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation” and “Undoing Ruin”, represented a development in skill and confidence. The latter release was the band’s first to enter the Billboard 200, after which the group appeared on the 2005 metal documentary “Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey”.

The critically-acclaimed “Deliver Us” arrived on Victory in 2007, debuting at No. 110 on the Billboard 200. It was followed by “The Eternal Return” in 2009, which topped the U.S. Heatseekers Chart and was supported by dates on the 2009 Summer Slaughter Tour. Following ten years with Victory Records, the band announced they had signed with E1 who issued Darkest Hour’s seventh studio album “The Human Romance” in 2011. Earning rave reviews from the critical press, the record was followed by their eponymous and most successful to date, in 2014.

Live reviews

Destructing, soul destroying, mind disturbing- if you like that type of music then buy a ticket for one the guys next shows- Darkest Hour.

Their live shows will literally be the darkest hour of your lives. The double bass on the drum is so punchy and solid it surprises me it doesn't break through the skin of the bass drum. From start to finish the American death metal band pile drive into an intense hour of music playing. 'Doomsayer The Beginning Of The End' typifies their live performances. John Henry, ironically the most basic normal sounding name going in the business, head bangs and shouts like some sort of troll from Lord of the Rings, into the microphone, nearly breaking the amplifiers and all the ear drums in the crowd. Mind you I'm sure the ear drums of everyone are smashed to pieces already because of the non-stop moshing which largely takes over the experience.

I fear for any Grandmother that's been dragged along to 'look after' their grandson and his friends during a 'concert.' Believe me this could be not only the darkest hour of your lives, but your last. Wear shin pads and protective head gear if you want to be safe and unharmed during the live show.

I had the pleasure of shooting Darkest Hour last time they came through Portland, OR on their Undoing Ruin anniversary tour and as a LONG TIME fan of DH it was fucking amazing!!! Shot their Undoing Ruin set, filled my memory card halfway through the last song on the album, and went back out into the pit to watch the remainder and they busted out Hidden Hands and the crowd went apeshit! I was soooo stoked and then as if that wasn't great enough...they fucking played DOOMSAYERRRR!!! That was BY FAR the highlight of all the shows I saw/shot in 2015.

oh yeah, and...aaaannndddd....I was driving off as they were loading out and was listening to For Whom the Bell Tolls and they heard it and they all "woooooooo!!!'d" me!

DH wooooooo!!!!'d MEEEE!?!

Great show, it was nice as it was in a small venue, I only missed 1 band of the entire night, and the three I saw were brilliant.

Obviously Darkest Hour were brilliant, and I would definitely recommend them to everyone, especially if it is a headlining tour, but even if they are just on support, check them out.

What was also great about the band being in a small venue, was at the end of the night got to chat to members of the band, which was really cool.

Oh maaaaaaaaan! This show was badass my friends. My wife and I got to meet the band member John Henry we took pictures and we even had a few drinks together and we bought him drinks. How awesome is that! And even better after the show, we still hung out with him, for them to take the time to hang out after the show is priceless! Forever these memories will be with us, we had a blast!

If a singer can't help get the crowd pumped it makes the pit and the show half as fun for me. This wasn't the case, they came on stage full of energy and didn't stop. chugging beers on stage and chucking them, ohhhh yeah that was a good show.

I loved that they did the whole Undoing Ruin album + some extra songs.

The place was really nice with sofas upstairs to take a rest and the crowd was very lively. We had some insane moshpits.

Darkest Hour’s Mike Schleibaum – ‘We’re Not Afraid to Challenge People,’ But It ‘Feels Nice’ When People Like the Music

The new Darkest Hour album, Perpetual Terminal , may challenge some fans, but guitarist Mike Schleibaum says it has been rewarding that their fans seem to like it.

Schleibaum was reflecting finding inspiration after a long hiatus with Full Metal Jackie for her weekend radio show.

The guitarist also speaks to what a revelation their Patreon has been, reminding them of the connection and things shared with their audience. "This real energy behind completing this album was the energy we felt when we went back out on tour," he says of reconnecting with their fans.

Schleibaum also reflects on his biggest misconception about what the music industry is and offers up his favorite vinyl findings in collecting over the years.

Check out more of the chat below.

It's Full Metal Jackie. With us this week, from Darkest Hour is Mike Schleibaum. The band has a banger of a new album called Perpetual Terminal and this amazing tour to support it. Mike, this is the band's tenth album, and perhaps coincidentally or not, the album is focused on themes of survival and rebirth. Where was your head at going into making this record, and how long before you started seeing some recurring themes?

Our heads have been all over the place. I'm not gonna lie. It's been seven years, so the heads have been turned in a lot of different directions. But it wasn't until kind of post pandemic when we were doing a celebration tour for our Deliver Us record that we sort of got into focus again.

We were like, "Oh, these people that love our band are like us. They love albums. They love to dig into the details. We don't need to play the game of the internet. We don't need to do singles or, you know what? Let's just make a really great album."

Then at that moment, we dove in and lyrically, it was really tough at first because I think for me and John, he likes to take control of that, but we're also not a total democracy. Like, me and him will go at it hard.

And it kind of was just on him, like I said over and over, this album needs to mean something. You know what I mean? This has to. You have to have something to say. Where we're at in our lives, how long we've been doing this, how much it's been happening. Like, how do you have nothing to say? Of course he did. And it wasn't a minute until we got into the lyrics before we started to see, like, "Oh, this album's about starting over. Dude, that's all we've ever known."

But then after a minute, that didn't make sense. Cause we never gave up. We've been here the whole time. People are saying, "Oh, Darkest Hour is back. You're back. It's so cool. You're back." It's like, man, we never left. We've been making livestreams and been on tour for two and a half years.

Before the pandemic, then survived coming at people live over the Internet the whole time during it. And it's kind of like, "No, this album's about survivalism, you know? Or is it about both? Or is it about how those are at odds with each other? I mean, which is it then?"

Then we had a theme and the songs really break down into kind of other things that really mean personal things or make statements, and under the umbrella of those major ideas.

I also think whenever I talk about the lyrics and the themes, John really wants me to encourage people to read the lyrics themselves and think about what it means to them. Because a lot of times these lyrics are written in a way where they could be about what he's saying, but they could also be about what you're living, you know? And I think that's what makes them good, and I think that's what makes the themes on the album good. And I think people will connect, you know?

Darkest Hour, "Perpetual Terminal"

Mike Schleibaum from Darkest Hour with us, We're talking about the new Perpetual Terminal album. And Mike, you've discussed killing parts of yourself in order to make new parts and survive at this far into your career. It's safe to say you've learned to adapt. Looking back, what do you think was your biggest moment of evolution in the group?

Can I give you two answers? Because there's two that just hit me. Definitely the first thing that comes to mind is Ozzfest 2004. We did that. We were the last band added. It was Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Slayer. I'm talking about all the lineups that matter of those bands, not that Slayer's lineup with Gary Holt isn't awesome. And not that I don't love Ozzy solo, but this was Black Sabbath with Black Sabbath. Judas Priest, the way I know Judas Priest, Slayer, all four of them. It was insane. Superjoint Ritual, Slipknot, Hatebreed, Lamb of God and then all of our buddies from the clubs like Bleeding Through, Every Time I Die, Unearth. I'm leaving out Shadows Fall was probably on the year before. It's just like so many bands. That was just such a defining moment for this band to be able to watch Black Sabbath every night, to be able to see basically the kings of this music, how they do things, who are like, how do they operate. The whole thing was a jolt to the system.

Before that, we had come from a really hardcore punk, DIY underground world that we knew so well. By that point, it was almost comfortable. And for us, if we had stayed there any longer, I think we would have just either ended or it would have just gone real badly.

But instead, this door just opened up and it was like, "Oh, hey, check out Judas Priest live. Like, you feel this energy and then all of a sudden you're hooked." You're like, "Oh, my God, this is like starting over, you know?"

The other time, because I told you I was going to give you two, was the time that we met Devin Townsend.

We knew of Devin Townsend and of course we knew of him. He produced two of our more iconic records Undoing Ruin and Deliver Us. And we had never really met until the first time when we made Undoing Ruin and just getting to know him, seeing him play guitar in front of you, like, seeing him take an idea you already thought was good and just turn it into magic in front of you, I mean, it's like, to this day, I'll never forget that.

Those moments, just seeing him drunk karaoke Bryan Adams is incredible. And then you're around something like that as a band, as a unit, and it just really forms kind of almost a new core memory that you draw on whenever you move forward creatively.

I think those two experiences definitely. If you ever meet Devin Townsend, you know what I mean? If you ever play with Black Slayer, Judas Priest or Slipknot, you'll know what I mean.

Mike, it's gotta be rewarding to see the fan support. And I know this album came together with the help of fans through Patreon. What has it meant to build up that following and see the returns that allowed you to do this album without a label initially behind it? And how does it keep you on your toes to have this Patreon as a source of connecting with your fans?

The Patreon's a labor of love. I'm not gonna lie - I hate the computer. I love being in a van so much that I will go on the computer. What surprised me is when I got on there and I was doing it as a band, I realized that I remembered that I do really love meeting people who like this band and meeting people who just love heavy metal or hardcore or death metal, whatever you want to call it.

People just love music as much as me. It's their life. This real energy behind completing this album was the energy we felt when we went back out on tour. When people love this band and you see that they love it in the way that you love other bands, it's like a drug you can't explain. And I think that when those people appreciate what you did first, it's a shock of relief.

It's like a hit of relief plus happiness. We're like, "This is great. This is what I wanted to achieve as an artist." So, I mean, at the same time, we have taken risks on this record where we want to even break out of the box.

Still ten albums in, I think that's still important to note that we are still not afraid to challenge what people who like the band, what they feel or think or want to hear. But at the same time, we are not afraid to say it feels nice when people like it.

Mike, one of the stronger tracks on this new album is "Societal Bite," which you've called a nod to the survivors. The world does us no favors sometimes, but this one's for those who fight the good fight and push on through. And this feels a bit more personal. Do you have a survival story that feeds into this song?

I definitely think that everyone's got their personal one. Talking about mine, I think it's important to note that I feel pretty privileged to have had the trials I've had to face. The stuff that I feel like that weighs me down in comparison to things that you see happening in  the world seems to pale. But, as an artist, as a person that's dedicated his entire life to being in a band, it's not necessarily been easy.

Anybody who's done anything they love enough to want to dedicate their life to it knows that feeling of both just love and disgust all at the same time, addiction and freedom all lined up together.

I think that's the piece, that's my struggle in there is this band and this journey has been my love the whole time I've done it. But it's also been a struggle to remain like a regular person, have a family, have some kind of grounding in reality, you know?

So I think that surviving the game of this crazy life I've been trying to live for 30 years and not either burn out or spin out or destroy everything around me has been my challenge. But I also know that John's challenge that he speaks of in the song is much different.

I know that the people that have connected to it also kind of have had different stories of survivalism that connect to the song. So I love it for that, but I also love it for the fact that it was one of the songs that just happened.

Iit was like, oh, sweet. That's weird. It's weird. The whole thing's weird, but it's cool. Like, boom. As an artist, to quote Bob Ross, it just was a beautiful, happy accident. It's never better when that happens.

Darkest Hour, "Societal Bite"

Mike, there's a quote in the press materials with the philosophy of finding life and living it till the wheels fall off. You guys clearly love what you do. I wanted to ask, though, what was maybe the biggest surprise or misconception about what you thought this career would be back when starting the band and what it actually is.

I definitely think when we started the band, we thought we didn't need a goal. The optimal place to be was really not in the driver's seat, but just being able to handle the band creatively, having all these people around you who could do a bunch of the details and just being able to delegate, really doing the band to a whole bunch of other people that you could afford while you got to sit around in your soft pants all day and jam thrash riffs and watch TV.

But as we went through every phase of our life in this band, we've been in the van for 30 years, but it's also been basically since I could drive a car. I think how long that we've been doing a van.

The biggest surprise to this whole thing has been that it isn't that journey to get to fans. It's actually waking up at 5AM cause everything's happening, and realizing you don't have any time to waste if you wanna make this thing that you love a reality. It's being able to keep lights turned on and basically keep people from having to have other jobs that can creatively do this thing and enjoy it. It's realizing that all the details that go into running a band and all the things we've had to do to survive have really made us love doing the band, because you get to control those little details and make them all about the band that you're doing.

I think that the technology has allowed us to kind of take the grip of controlling the management of the band in a lot of ways. I think that years later, instead of sitting in the back and just being the guys in the band, we're not only the guys in the band, but we manage the band.

We're in control of the band. We're watching everything, and we're right here. So when you interact with us anywhere, you really do interact with us. And that makes it real and honest, and I think in the end, that's something we can be proud of. We thought we had the wrong idea what this game was about when we started, that's for sure.

Mike, in addition to the new record, you recently had a chance to reissue the Godless Prophets and the Migrant Flora album on vinyl. Got to ask if you are a big vinyl collector or if you have a preferred format in listening to music. And if you are a collector, what's the favorite vinyl pieces in your music collection?

Oh, my favorite vinyl. Oh, man. Okay, first of all, I have some really cool old Ozzy vinyl that I love. I love the artwork of it, and everything about it reminds me of when I was too young to be allowed to have it, you know? I have this really awesome pressing of the record No Rest for the Wicked . And Speak of the Devil , that's what I'm talking about. It's the live Ozzy record that's not on Spotify. Brad Gills plays guitar on it. It's just incredible album. I got this pressing of it, this vinyl, I got it in Europe. Man, it sounds so awesome. It's the best version of it. So, I definitely love that record.

Then also I have this really amazing vinyl of hip hop record called R.A.P. Music  by Killer Mike that someone gave me. I don't have that many hip hop records on vinyl, but it just sounds incredible. I love putting it on the turntable and it's so clear and has so much bottom end. It makes me rethink a lot of the heavy metal records that I love and the way that they sound. So I love that record, too.

Then also, I have this really awesome UFO record. UFO was not on my radar, but doing all these tours in Europe, people hand me stuff. And I remember someone handed me this UFO record. He handed it to me and I remember thinking it was so weird that someone randomly outside the venue give me this record. So it means a lot to me because it's literally how I discovered UFO on my turntable. That doesn't happen in an age where you can just listen to everything. Cause I didn't think about it at the time. Brought it on tour here and put it on. It was a really, like a really cool experience. That's three I can go on. Cause I got a lot of records in there. But those are my favorite.

The Darkest Hour Featurette

"This film will offer a ton of bullets and explosions and it's gunna feel like an adventure in a very foreign place." That's your hard sales pitch right there. A full-length featurette for Chris Gorak's sci-fi The Darkest Hour has hit the web uploaded by an international distributor on YouTube . The video focuses partially on Moscow and shooting the film in Russia, as well as the story and how it all unfolds when an alien invasion occurs there. The featurette has the cast of young actors, Emile Hirsch , Rachael Taylor , Olivia Thirlby and Max Minghella , talking about their characters and storyline. I still think this looks kind of awesome!

Watch the new featurette for Chris Gorak's sci-fi The Darkest Hour (premiered by FoxSingapore ):

Directed by Chris Gorak ( Right at Your Door ), produced by Timur Bekmambetov ( Wanted , Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ) and written by Jon Spaihts (Ridley Scott's Prometheus ), the film is about five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack. Emile Hirsch ( Speed Racer ) leads the cast including Olivia Thirlby ( Juno ), Max Minghella ( The Social Network ), Rachael Taylor ( Transformers ) and Joel Kinnaman . Summit Entertainment is bringing Chris Gorak's The Darkest Hour to theaters on December 23rd , Christmas weekend, this winter.

i'm not very impressed with the cast; (except for hirsch) but, i'll probably rent - however, if these aliens did come here for electricity - how "advanced" can they be? surely, there has to be more to their motives than that.

H-E-B provides tour of Disaster Response Units

Heb displays disaster response operation.

First responders from across central Texas toured a fleet of disaster response vehicles assembled by the grocery store chain HEB.

AUSTIN, Texas - A collection of vehicles took up a portion of the parking lot at Shoreline Church on Wednesday morning. It was a full deployment of H-E-B's Disaster Response Unit, known as a DRU.

The grocery chain's history of answering calls for help goes back almost to the beginning.

"H-E-B's Spirit of giving really started in 1905 with our founder, Florence. And so, she and her three little boys would take them over to the Guadalupe River, and she would help feed the displaced residents there," said Tamera Jones with H-E-B.

The store’s first big relief effort, according to Jones, was in 1933 after a strong hurricane hit the Rio Grand Valley. Major storm events typically activate the DRUs, but the Panhandle wildfires brought about the most recent deployment.

Gov. Abbott declares disaster for wildfires

Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration in response to wildfires across Texas, declaring that the fires pose an imminent threat of widespread or severe damage and loss in multiple counties.

"It's probably the most rewarding thing you can do," said DRU team leader Frank Senioris.

When Frank Senioris isn't running a DRU, he manages the H-E-B in New Braunfels. Hurricane Harvey, he told FOX 7, is a run he will never forget.

"We went all the way to Beaumont, where they were still dealing with floods, over a week after Harvey had already, like, left the state. And so just to see the devastation and everything, it's, it's one where it kind of humbles you," said Senioris.

Local first responders toured the DRU fleet on Wednesday morning. It includes:

  • A mobile kitchen that can serve 500 meals, a larger set-up can do more than 2,000 an hour
  • There's a fresh water tanker
  • A communications and operations trailer
  • A bunk house
  • Restrooms with showers
  • A rolling pharmacy
  • Business center, where cash withdrawals can be made

Texas Panhandle wildfires hit record size

The wildfire in the Panhandle has grown larger than the massive Bastrop Complex Fire that hit central Texas in 2011. Several Austin-area firefighters are battling the blaze in the Panhandle.

"They were there for us and some of our, you know, hardest and almost darkest times that we had in emergencies. They've been a steadfast partner in helping to make sure that we're able to take care of our folks," said Pflugerville Emergency Services Director Joseph Chacon.

The DRUs essentially fill a gap during a crisis.

"It takes some of that pressure off of those local, regional and state assets. They are self-supportive," said Commander Mikel Kane with Austin Travis Co EMS.

Re-creating the H-E-B DRU program would be an expensive endeavor for a small business or community group. But with wildfires a constant threat, and the hurricane season approaching filling a gap, even a small one can have a big impact.

"We can't do it by ourselves," said Rob Vires Chief of Staff for the Austin Fire Department.

Organizing the DRU tour was encouraged by AFD Chief Joel Baker. It’s hoped it will bring about more public and private partnerships.

"Anyone can step in and find a place at this table to help out in the community along the way to make sure we're taking care of folks in difficult times, to rebuild, to reestablish, to help them, in that gap from when the emergencies occurred to when they can actually get back to, some semblance of normal life," said Vires.

The film follows Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby Rachael Taylor and Max Minghella as they battle to stay alive during an alien invasion and the first trailer has a slight 'Red Dawn With Aliens' vibe going on.

25 years later, the trauma of the Columbine High School shooting is still with us

the darkest hour tour

Dave Cullen had just sat down to lunch – a Budget Gourmet frozen meal of beef stroganoff – when the media first reported shots fired at a school in Littleton, Colorado, on a warm April day a quarter of a century ago.

Jaclyn Schildkraut was home sick during her freshman year of college watching soap operas – "Days of Our Lives," she thinks – when the news broke in with aerial videos of SWAT teams and terrified students running out of Columbine High School with their hands over their heads.

Robert Thompson stayed awake watching the late-night news program " Nightline ," the interviews with survivors and their parents, the haunting video of then-17-year-old Patrick Ireland falling, bloodied, out the window of the school library into the arms of first responders.

The massacre at Columbine on April 20, 1999, during which 12 students and one teacher were killed, wasn’t the United States' first mass shooting at a school, nor would it be the last. But media experts told USA TODAY it quickly became one of the most infamous thanks in part to the advent of the 24-hour news cycle and the internet. In what felt like real time, the shooting sent shock waves through the Colorado community and the nation, shattering the belief that children were safe at school.

“It was seared into us,” said Cullen, journalist and author of "Columbine." “I wasn't calling it the start of the mass-shooter era then, but we knew we were into something new and horrible.”

The trauma of Columbine still haunts the country 25 years later, including students who weren’t alive to witness it. The massacre became a blueprint for dozens of copycats, led to major changes in school safety, and sparked an enduring legacy of activism as survivors push for better gun control and offer their support to the next generation of Americans affected by gun violence.

“There's no healing," Cullen said. "It's an open wound.”

Mass shooting news can cause stress

At the time, the massacre at Columbine wasn't the nation's deadliest school shooting , said Thompson, a trustee professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University. But the shooting came after the formation of CNN, Fox and MSNBC, which made it the first to get 24/7 television news coverage, which Thompson called “powerful and remarkably upsetting.”

Columbine was more closely watched than any other news story that year or that decade, except for the 1992 verdict in the Rodney King beating and the 1996 crash of TWA Flight 800, according to a 1999 survey from the Pew Research Center .

Shocking images were broadcast and television anchors interviewed students calling from inside the building, fueling the feeling that the disaster was still unfolding, Cullen wrote in "Columbine." Though the shooting ended just after noon, it would be several hours before police, the press and the public learned the perpetrators were dead, said Cullen, who covered the massacre for Salon . He said that may have contributed to the tragedy's staying power in the nation’s collective memory.

“We lived through it live,” he said.

Another factor was the media's focus on the shooters, who intentionally left behind a collection of evidence that later would become celebrated on "some of the darkest corners of the internet," according to James Densley, professor of criminal justice at Metropolitan State University in Minnesota.

“It was a mass shooting designed to go viral before we knew what going viral even meant,” Densely said.

Research on mass tragedies in the decades since has found the more time people spend watching this kind of news, the more likely they are to report high levels of acute stress, according to E. Alison Holman, a professor in the school of nursing and department of psychological science at the University of California, Irvine. This is particularly true when the images are graphic, Holman said.

In a study on the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing , Holman found consuming six or more hours a day of media coverage about the attack was associated with more acute stress symptoms than actually being at the site of the bombing. She said symptoms can include intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, shallow breathing and increased heart rate. The effects can last for years, Holman said.

Columbine anniversary can be difficult for survivors

It’s trauma that Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel was killed at Columbine , believes people still don’t understand. Mauser said the anniversary of the shooting can be a particularly tough time. He said he helped plan a vigil for the victims Friday evening on the steps of Colorado's Capitol, but for survivors its a day "you want to get past quickly."

“It goes beyond just the ones who were killed or injured,” Mauser said. “The trauma can be quite crippling for some people.”

In the years since the shooting, Mauser has fought for stricter gun legislation as a member of Colorado Ceasefire. When speaking publicly, he wears the shoes his son was wearing the day of the massacre.

After Columbine, many survivors of mass shootings have followed in Mauser’s footsteps, including survivors of the 2018 attack on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Though activism can lead to burnout, research on climate change anxiety published in Current Psychology and sexual assault trauma published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology suggests engaging in activism can benefit participants' mental health.

In 1999, sustained mental health services were "not a thing,” said Missy Mendo, who was a 14-year-old freshman at Columbine at the time. The county provided six weeks of free mental health care, which Mendo said she used, but she did not return to therapy until years later, after she became a mother.

Mendo is director of community outreach for The Rebels Project , an organization formed by a group of Columbine survivors after the 2012 mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado . The organization offers peer support to survivors of mass casualty events.

Though it's not a substitute for traditional counseling, Schildkraut, author of "Columbine, 20 Years Later and Beyond: Lessons from Tragedy," said her research has found connecting with a "survivor network" can be a crucial part of recovery.

Each year around this time, Mendo tries to plan something to take her mind off the memories. But she knows she can’t escape the calendar, and her "brain has the potential to turn to mashed potato,” she said with a laugh.

Copycat school shootings after Columbine

Columbine also spawned something more insidious: copycats. A study of 46 active shooter incidents at K-12 schools found nearly half of the shooters were influenced by Columbine , including the attackers in Parkland and Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut , according to Densley, the Metropolitan State University professor who was a co-author for the study. A Mother Jones investigation in 2019 documented the "Columbine effect" in 74 plots and attacks spanning 30 states.

“These are events where the search histories of the shooters were that they were searching for Columbine, that they were engaged in chat rooms online where they were discussing Columbine or learning about the shooters,” said Densley, co-founder of the Violence Prevention Project. “There's examples as well of shooters who have dressed in black trenchcoats because that is part of the performance of violence that Columbine created.”

Though mass shootings are rare, 75% of people ages 15 to 21 said they are significant sources of stress, according to a 2018 survey by The Harris Poll for the American Psychological Association.

Columbine itself continues to be a target, too, said John McDonald, former executive director of school safety for Jefferson County Schools in Colorado. McDonald said security at Columbine costs more than twice that of any other high school in the district.

“Columbine was unique because when I started we still had tour buses showing up trying to drop people off to take tours of the building, and it was insane,” he said. “But we also had threats because of a fascination. A fascination and fixation on the tragedy and the killers.”

McDonald said that in his 14 years on the job, the threats never waned, and ultimately they reached a crescendo around the 20th anniversary of the massacre. In April 2019, a Florida teenager authorities described as “infatuated” with the shooting flew to Colorado and bought a shotgun in Littleton, prompting school shutdowns. The teenager was later found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"It was an incredibly scary time," McDonald said.

Adam Lankford, a University of Alabama criminology professor who has researched mass shooters, said the media attention on the perpetrators at Columbine may have contributed to this “contagion effect." Movements like No Notoriety, a campaign created by parents of Aurora theater shooting victim Alex Teves, now urge the media not to publish mass killers' names and photos.

But Lankford warned that media attention is not the only factor driving copycats .

“It doesn't mean there's a simple effect where it's like you learn about Columbine and that makes you want to kill people,” Lankford said. “It's more complicated than that. These people have other problems in their lives, other issues in terms of their psychological health.”

Shooter drills can cause anxiety

Sometimes, McDonald said, he feels "incredibly hopeful" about the progress in school safety since Columbine. Other times he's frustrated to see schools failing to take simple precautions like locking doors . He doesn’t want to be having these same conversations 25 years from now.

“We'd better be willing to get great, because those school shooters are studying. They're studying the past. They're studying the tactics. They're studying strategies. They're studying the training,” McDonald said. “They're preparing for us − we'd better be prepared for them.”

Protecting schools and being vigilant is vital, but it takes a toll, he said. More than a year ago, McDonald decided he needed a change and left Colorado.

“What I can tell you is that after all the years I did that work, I was flat worn out,” said McDonald, now chief operating officer of Missouri’s Center for Education Safety and the Council for School Safety Leadership. “I felt like this is a 24-hour-a-day way to live. And it was exhausting, it was emotional, it was physically taxing.”

School security, which has become a multibillion-dollar-a-year industry, can be taxing for others, too. Research by the Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund and the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Social Dynamics and Wellbeing Lab suggests an association between active shooter drills and increases in depression , stress and anxiety among students, parents and teachers.

Cullen, the author, said that like the changes in airport security after 9/11 , new security measures at schools after Columbine can be for some a reminder of the tragedy .

"America changed overnight in our fears and our behavior because of this," Cullen said. "Not only has no other shooting done that, but very few events, period."
