Alex G on Music, Religion, and the Mysteries of Songwriting

Last year, Alex Giannascoli was ready to make a change. After years of living nomadically around Philadelphia, the oracular singer-songwriter who performs as Alex G felt like settling down. So he and his longtime partner, violinist Molly Germer, bought a place of their own. “We got this old house and spent a couple months taking off wallpaper and putting up ceilings and stuff,” says Giannascoli, 29. “It’s pretty nice in there now.”

Since releasing his first demos on Bandcamp as a teen more than a decade ago, Alex G has grown steadily in influence and acclaim, each album and tour bigger than the last. He’s regarded as a peer by generational talents like Frank Ocean, who invited Giannascoli to play guitar on 2016’s Blonde and some live dates that followed — and, like Ocean, he’s revered by a cult of fans who see something pure and real in his emotionally direct, lyrically cryptic songs and his carefully guarded public presence.

The tracklist for God Save the Animals features four songs recorded with contributions from his friends Sam Acchione on lead guitar, John Heywood on bass, and Tom Kelly on drums, and a couple with strings played and arranged by Germer. The rest of the album, for the most part, is all Alex. You wouldn’t necessarily be able to tell the difference between these two modes without consulting the liner notes: “Runner,” for example, which summons a heartfelt rock-band energy reminiscent of Tom Petty, is a solo joint, with Giannascoli listed as playing drums, acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, piano, and synthesizer. “Blessing,” a strangely mesmerizing nu-metal/whisper-rock/chamber-music experiment that sounds for all the world like something a guy like Giannascoli might cook up in an empty room on a series of late nights, features the full band behind him.

The idea of fame has always weirded him out a little. When he looks out at a couple thousand people gathered to hear him perform, he wonders sometimes who they are. “As the crowd gets bigger, the percentage of people that’s like, ‘What the fuck is this?’ keeps growing,” he says. “It’s complicated, I guess. I’m just so grateful.”

“That’s how I listen to music,” he says. “When I was younger, I had Modest Mouse, then Elliott Smith, then Radiohead, one at a time — like, ‘I’m obsessed with you.’… It feels like they’re your friend. It’s kind of trippy thinking that’s what my music is doing [for other people].”

The newest and most striking aspect of God Save the Animals is a persistent interest in religious themes. The first words on the album, over a gently falling chord sequence, are: “People come and people go away/Yeah, but God, with me he stayed.” A few tracks later, through a thick haze of vocal processing, he plays with another way of thinking about divine power: “God is my designer/Jesus is my lawyer.”

Giannascoli, who will turn 30 in February, says he wrote that song based on “a temperamental feeling,” with no deeper intent than expressing the thought that was crossing his mind that day. “There’s plenty of times I sit down, I’m trying to write, and that feeling never comes, so I just don’t do anything,” he says. “And honestly, as I get older, it’s fewer and farther between that something is getting me there. So who knows? Not that I waited that long to make this record, but it’ll probably take me a little bit longer each time.”

He shrugs. “Any form of trying to control it gets in the way,” he says. “You just have to let it go.”

Alex G has announced details of his latest solo album alongside an upcoming North American tour. God Save The Animals is due on September 23 via Domino, with today's announcement accompanied by new song "Runner." Scroll down to hear that song below.

God Save The Animals was written and recorded by Alex G alongside his bandmates Sam Acchione, Molly Germer, John Heywood, and Tom Kelly. Jacob Portrait co-produced the album alongside Alex G. In addition to "Runner" it features "Blessing," first released last month. The album is the first solo album since 2019's House of Sugar . Earlier this year Alex G scored indie horror film We're All Going to the World's Fair .

Have you ever had an "indescribable feeling?" An emotion or a sensation that washes over you but that you can't quite put into words? Those feelings are what Alex G tries to capture with his music.

For most of his career, he's made that music pretty much all alone, on his computer in Philadelphia, becoming a lo-fi indie cult favorite. For his ninth album, God Save the Animals , Alex G branched out and enlisted the help of several different studios and engineers for the first time.

Today, Alex G joins the World Cafe to talk about why he wanted to work with others, about how he writes and about some of the record's surprising influences like Gillian Welch and Moby.

Alex G God Save The Animals Domino [2022]

God Save The Animals is Alex Giannascoli’s, aka Alex G, ninth album at the young age of 29. He has been a staple on the indie DIY scene for years now and continues to push his own boundaries as a singer songwriter with every release. With God Save The Animals , faith is used in a general sense across the album’s 13 tracks which tie them together as Alex G puts more focus on how his song subjects are able to come out the other side of heavier situations. Although the topic matter sounds incredibly deep, the music landscape that Alex G creates keeps the mood lighter as the music has the ability to mesmerize your ear on each track.

From the opener, “After All,” you hear Alex G up to some early vocal trickery with his sped up/higher pitched vocals that sound like a children’s choir performing a TikTok trending video. What is really capturing about this track is the closing appearance of Jessica Lea Mayfield as she pleasantly brings the song to a close. “Runner” comes at you next, and it is easily one of my favorite indie singles released this year. It has a nice straight forward guitar rock vibe which is led by his off-kilter vocals and catchy chorus. Elsewhere, Alex G’s experimentation never goes wrong and offers up so many memorable moments that takes God Save The Animals to its higher level. From the really low register he delivers on “Cross The Sea,” to the heavily manipulated vocals and beats on “Headroom Piano” or on the intense dramatic Godly vocal effects over the instrumentation on “S.D.O.S.,” you really do hear surprises on every song. The more folkish “Miracles” near the end of the album is a complete winner while the string moments on “Early Morning Waiting” made the track a highlight for me.

Alex G continues to evolve before your ears on God Save The Animals . He is completely willing to color outside the lines. For some artists, it can be a balancing act not to lose your core when changing the formula. Alex G perfectly walks the line and not only gives longtime fans an album they will adore but should easily build his growing fanbase with the smartly played God Save The Animals .

God Save the Animals

Part of the appeal of Alex G’s homespun folk pop is how unsettling it is. For every Beatles-y melody (“Mission”) or warm, reassuring chorus (“Early Morning Waiting”) there’s the image of a cocked gun (“Runner”) or a mangled voice lurking in the mix like the monster in a fairy-tale forest (“S.D.O.S”). His characters describe adult perspectives with the terror and wonder of children (“No Bitterness,” “Blessing”), and several tracks make awestruck references to God. With every album, he draws closer to the conventions of American indie rock without touching them. And by the time you realize he isn’t just another guy in his bedroom with an acoustic guitar, it’s too late.

His proper follow-up to 2019's House of Sugar

God Save the Animals , the fantastic new album from reigning indie rock king Alex G , is out today.

Preceded by the singles “Blessing.”   “Runner,” and “Miracles,” God Save the Animals abides by Alex’s tendency to loosely envelop his albums in broad metaphors and concepts. Though he references “God” multiple times on the record, he uses the term to embody faith as a whole and a means of connection among the human race rather than a strict religious doctrine.

Longtime fans will also note that the album sheds Alex of his typical homespun grit, as he’s opted to use proper studios and a larger team of engineers for the first time. The result means God Save the Animals  might objectively be his most high-quality record yet, but it still includes the oddities that make an Alex G album an Alex G album. Back in May, Alex G released his first-ever film score for the movie We’re All Going to the World’s Fair . His last proper studio album was 2019’s  House of Sugar . To support the release of God Save the Animals , Alex stopped by  The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a performance of “Runner,” and he’s also mapped out a lengthy North American tour taking place this fall; grab tickets via Ticketmaster .
