  • Trivia When Shadow falls into a pit and injures his leg, the dog never actually fell into the pit. When he stepped on the boards, they broke, but there was a platform immediately below. Then a fake dog was dropped into the pit and these scenes were edited together. Shadow tries to get out but the pit is large and deep and muddy and he keeps slipping back into the pit because he cannot get a good grip. To accomplish this scene, a special pit was dug which was about three to four feet deep. For the sliding back and forth, one trainer was at the top of the pit calling the dog. Another trainer was at the bottom telling the dog to stay. When he did, he would naturally start sliding downward. The dog could actually walk out on his own at any time and did so several times during the filming. When Shadow does appear at the end of the film to be reunited with Peter, Shadow runs with a limp. This was accomplished by putting part of a round wooden bead between the dog's toes. The bead did not hurt him in any way, but gave him a peculiar sensation, causing him to walk with a limp.
  • Goofs The marks on Chance's face from getting hit by the porcupine change in nearly every shot, and at one point disappear all together, but are back in the next shot.

Shadow : [after Sassy is lost in the river] I shouldn't have made her come.

Chance : It's not your fault, she wanted to come.

Shadow : But it's my responsibility. I had a responsibility to Sassy - to love her and protect her - the same as I have to you... and to Peter. And the same as you have to Jamie.

Chance : But we didn't ask for this job.

Shadow : We didn't have to. It's built in. Has been ever since the dawn of time... when a few wild dogs took it upon themselves to watch over man, to bark when he's in danger, to run and play with him when he's happy, to nuzzle him when he's lonely. That's why they call us man's best friend.

Chance : [narrating] Looking at him that night, he seemed so wise... and ancient, like the first dog who ever walked the earth. I just hope that one day, I can be like him.

  • A scene where Peter and Jamie wash off Chance after he eats the wedding cake but before he tricks Sassy on the seesaw.
  • A scene in which Kate takes the animals for a ride in the truck.
  • A scene with the kids playing Nintendo when Bob realizes he's been invited to a welcome BBQ on the same day they were supposed to go to Kate's to visit Shadow, Chance, and Sassy.
  • An extended scene of Quentin rescuing Sassy and taking her back to his cabin.
  • The scene where Frank greets Kate upon her return home was extended to show Kate discovering the missing part of her note, calling an animal shelter, and speculating to Frank that the animals left to head home to Fresno before calling a park ranger.
  • A scene where Quentin is playing the saxophone during the evening and then Sassy tying up Quentin's goat when he left his cabin.
  • After seeing the Fresno skyline and before hitting a rail yard, the animals stop at a dumpster where Sassy tries to find food but comes up empty.

Tv/streaming, collections, great movies, chaz's journal, contributors, homeward bound: the incredible journey.

Now streaming on:

So there I was, sitting in a theater with a lot of kids, watching an animal picture. Worse, an animal picture where the animals talked. And even worse, not an animated movie, but a live-action film where the animal's lips don't even move when they talk. How do they do it? Ventriloquism, or telepathy? The movie was about a wise old dog and an impetuous young pup and a snotty cat. Their human owners are about to go to San Francisco on business, and leave the animals with a friend who lives on a ranch on the other side of the mountains. But will the animals understand that they are not being abandoned? Or will they think they're trapped in a nightmarish four-footed remake of " Home Alone "?  I started to think of possible titles. "Bone Alone"? I asked myself what I was doing watching this movie. And then a funny thing happened. I got hooked by the story. I started to like the thing. The pets decide to return home, by crossing a mountain range. Along the way they have a lot of amazing adventures, few of them possible, most of them fun.

"Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey" is a movie frankly designed for kids, and yet it has a certain craftsmanship and an undeniable charm, and if you find yourself watching it with a child you may end up liking it almost as much. You will almost certainly not be as disturbed when the cat, named Sassy, gets swept over a waterfall and is given up for drowned, because you know the unwritten rule in this genre is that kitty will turn up, wet and mad, a little farther downstream.

The animal actors - Ben the wise one, Rattler the brash one, and Tiki, the spoiled feline - are given voices by Don Ameche , Michael J. Fox and Sally Field . Sometimes the voices are just a little too smooth, but some of the lines are good, especially Sassy's.*

And the adventures are exciting almost precisely in proportion to their impossibility. By the time one dog lures a mountain lion onto the end of a log and the other dog jumps on the other end to catapult the dangerous beast into the river, we have given up looking for credibility, and are waiting for the animals to start solving mathematical equations and picking out simple tunes on the piano.

The director, Duwayne Dunham , and his cinematographer, Reed Smoot , must have had considerable patience to put together all of the complicated stunts in this movie. The animals must have, too. The movie is based on a 1963 Disney picture named "The Incredible Journey," unseen by me. In that one, I gather, the animals did not speak. I'm not sure if they did tricks with mountain lions.

It improves on the original, that's all you want from a remake.

I just about, marginally, liked the 1963 film, whereas I actually did comfortably enjoy 'Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey'. The animals are as adorable in this as they are in the first film, with more definitive care taken for them - that's not, arguably, the case in the '63 production.

The premise is changed up in some areas, there's a scene that proceeds the conclusion which is rather nice and isn't in the other. The whole feel of this is more engaging, helped by the fact that it gives the animals a voice whi... read the rest.

Leave it to the Disney marketing machine to dust off a venerable nature film like 1963's "The Incredible Journey" and wed it with "Look Who's Talking," creating a sprightly little entertainment that should enthrall tots without straining the patience of their parents. While attimes a bit heavy-pawed, enough kids should answer this call to nature to bury plenty of bones in Disney's backyard.

Leave it to the Disney marketing machine to dust off a venerable nature film like 1963’s “The Incredible Journey” and wed it with “Look Who’s Talking,” creating a sprightly little entertainment that should enthrall tots without straining the patience of their parents. While attimes a bit heavy-pawed, enough kids should answer this call to nature to bury plenty of bones in Disney’s backyard.

Working loosely from the original Disney nature movie (which featured a Rex Allen narration), the studio has taken that frame and built on it–applying animation principles to live-action by giving personalities to the movie’s wayward dogs and cat through the clever use of celebrity voices Michael J. Fox, Sally Field and Don Ameche.

Although the story also gets spruced up with some ’90s twists–like a “Brady Bunch”-type marriage between Robert Hays and Kim Greist bringing their kids together into one big family–the plot still centers on three pets, left with a family friend, who try to cross the wilderness and make it back home.

Popular on Variety

Along the way they encounter various menaces, from bears to porcupines.

The aging Shadow (a Golden Retriever voiced with stately dignity by Ameche) leads the way, followed by the upstart mutt Chance (Fox) and snooty feline Sassy (Field).

The non-nuclear family isn’t all that’s new in this telling, however.

The screenplay by Linda Woolverton (of “Beauty and the Beast,” putting her writing-for-animation skills to good use) and Caroline Thompson (“Edward Scissorhands”) develops a parallel view of family through the pet relationships, as the independent-minded mutt Chance learns about love, trust and kinship from the old dog.

Granted, some of Ameche’s boy-and-his-dog monologues are enough to tempt more jaded listeners to cough up a hairball, but its Mr. Rogers-like simplicity should play extremely well with kids.

For the most part, in fact, the writers have done a splendid job capturing what animals seem to be thinking without making them cognizant of what humans are saying, except for the few words the pets recognize.

The voice-over personalities also work on a more adult level, particularly the snide asides by Fox (in what is probably his best big-screen work except for the “Back to the Future” series, not saying a lot) and Field.

Pity the embodied human actors, completely overshadowed by those showy vocal turns and the four-footed actors playing Shadow (Ben), Chance (Rattler) and Sassy (Tiki).

Deviating from an old showbiz cliche, in this case even children should beware of scenes with dogs.

Duwayne Dunham, a veteran film editor making his directing debut, keeps “Journey’s” pace brisk.

Other stars, no less important than the animals and trainers, are cinematographer Reed Smoot and composer Bruce Broughton.

The great outdoors (shot largely in Oregon) functions as the major obstacle to the intrepid trekkers, while Broughton’s terrific score creates the requisite sense of warmth and adventure.

Other tech credits are strong, and if this venture works, Disney may have a fertile area to mine from its nature library.

What’s next, a blockbuster based on “Inky the Crow” or “Sammy, the Way Out Seal”? The mind boggles.

Pic is dedicated to producer Franklin R. Levy, who died during the production.

Rotten Tomatoes® Score

Another Disney delight, based on the humane and comical children's novel by Sheila Burnford... There isn't a jaded, cynical moment in the film.

The anthropomorphism, outside its cartoon context, seems condescendingly cruel, denying the characters' animal grace and subtlety.

It has a dumb, trashy humour that I have to confess secretly to enjoying.

Although a remake that adds very little to the original bar a few jokes, this still remains enjoyable and brings a classic story to the attention of the next generation.

That rare family film that really ought to please the entire family.

It's a charmer...beautifully shot in Oregon, targeted at children but not without appeal to their parents.

A treat for children, thanks to the astonishing performances of its animal cast

This film will appeal to anyone of any age who doesn't have a heart of stone.

Adventurous animal tale will have kids riveted.

Brighter and breezier than many movies starring humans nowadays.

It’ll leap up at you, lick you in the face, then curl up in your lap and stay there, soft and warm and content.

It has a certain craftsmanship and an undeniable charm, and if you find yourself watching it with a child you may end up liking it almost...

That rare family film that really ought to please the entire family.

As an episode of The Wonderful World of Disney, it would be fine, but as a major motion picture, it’s disappointing.

It has a dumb, trashy humour that I have to confess secretly to enjoying.

the incredible journey film 1993

Bad movie, I was bored. There should be a story of animals, but they show a «human» plot of returning home from the forest, but instead of people there are animals, whose characteristics are used to a minimum. Even simple stories should have interesting interactions rather than just one fact about the journey. Translated to English

<p>Grodin did great work with a dog, and so did Tom Hanks. Early in his career, before he was an Oscars darling, Hanks played a cop who is paired with a dog on a case.
