U.S. News Announces Best Cruise Lines

Washington, D.C. – U.S. News & World Report, publisher of Best Hotels , Best Vacations and Best Travel Rewards Programs , today announced the 2022 Best Cruise Lines rankings , designed to provide up-to-date information on the leading cruise lines.

With much of the world reopening to international travel, U.S. News surveyed travelers to understand the effects of COVID-19 on cruiser sentiments. U.S. News unveiled the survey results at the Seatrade Global Conference in October which found that cruisers – both first-time and longtime – are booked at higher levels than before the pandemic. U.S. News survey data also revealed that of the frequent travelers who indicated that they would cruise again, 20% are already signed up for their next sailing.

"Though most avenues of travel have been impacted throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the cruise industry has seen the most challenges," said Nicola Wood, travel editor at U.S. News. "U.S. News is excited to once again highlight the leading cruise lines and provide in-depth information on ships, onboard activities and itineraries to travelers looking to research and book a cruise vacation."

Celebrity Cruises takes the No. 1 spot as the Best Cruise Line for the Money . Viking Ocean Cruises is the No. 1 Best Cruise Line for Couples and Best Luxury Cruise Line thanks to its adult-focused environment and luxurious and romantic amenities, such as fireplaces in each ship's common area and private verandas in every stateroom.

Disney Cruise Line, which offers ships tailored specifically to children and families, has remained the No. 1 Best Cruise Line for Families since U.S. News began ranking cruise lines. Additionally, for the eighth consecutive year, Disney is also the No. 1 Best Cruise Line in the Caribbean . Viking Ocean Cruises takes the spot of No. 1 Best Cruise Line in the Mediterranean for 2022.

The rankings help travelers select the best cruise by brand, region, traveler type and budget. This year's rankings are accompanied by an editorial rundown of the most popular river cruise lines for those looking for guidance on a different type of cruise that still offers itineraries with multiple destinations.

The statistics confirm what we previously knew: Over a quarter of a million of you who responded to this year’s study show that there has never been more enthusiasm for travel. This year’s list, which includes several newcomers to take into consideration, is a monument to the endurance of longtime favorites, from the top large U.S. city to the top foreign airline. Think of it as a primer on where and how to sail next. The greatest cruise companies and ships in the world , as chosen by Traveler readers, are listed below.

Large ships (More than 4,000 passengers)

3. Norwegian Cruise Line, a mega ship operator

Norwegian Cruise Line , known for its vibrant ships, entered the mega-ship market in 2010 with the introduction of Norwegian Epic, which can accommodate just over 5,000 passengers at full occupancy. Since then, the company has introduced five additional ships in the Breakaway and Breakaway-Plus classes. Although the cruise line’s newest ship, Norwegian Bliss , has a distinctly more mature atmosphere, families frequently board these ships, which primarily sail in North America, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. Families take advantage of amenities like waterparks, virtual reality gaming, and go-kart racing. The newest and most opulent of its mega-ships, Norwegian Prima, was introduced to the public in August 2022.

2. The megaship operator MSC Cruises

Despite having its headquarters in the landlocked country of Switzerland, MSC has mastered the art of building mega-ships, having constructed five of the world’s fifteen largest vessels: the MSC Grandiosa, MSC Bellissima, MSC Meraviglia , MSC Virtuosa, and MSC Seashore. Each has a maximum capacity of 5,300 to 6,300 passengers. The newest of the five ships is MSC Seashore, which has a New York City motif. With a length of 1,100 feet, it is the longest ship in the line and can accommodate more than 140,000 square feet of outdoor area as well as 7,500 square feet of kid-specific space, including the Pirates Cove Aquapark. In addition to the 5,100-passenger MSC Seascape and the 4,800-passenger MSC Euribia, MSC has four World-class mega-ships with a capacity between 5,800 and 6,850 people in the works.

Given that it operates the four largest cruise ships in the world, Royal Caribbean is the cruise line for you if you want to really feel like you’re residing in a floating metropolis. In terms of passenger count (about 6,700 at full capacity), length (almost 1,200 feet long), and gross tonnage, Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, and Oasis of the Seas are at the top of the list (more than 225,000 tonnes). Given their size, these ships offer every amenity you can imagine—and plenty more you can’t—from waterparks to world-class musical shows to autonomous bars manned by robots to double-decker suites with slides for the kids. They also have autonomous bars that serve themselves. Throughout the year, you can find these enormous ships cruising the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, but with so much to do on board, you might not even want to get off the ship.

Big Ships (2,500 to 4,000 passengers)

The 3,100-passenger Voyager-class ships, for example, were previously the largest ships in the world before Royal Caribbean introduced the larger Freedom class and then the Oasis class. These ships still make up the majority of the fleet today. From Alaska to Mexico’s Sea of Cortez to the Panama Canal, the cruise line’s fleet of nine small ships can accommodate 22 to 86 guests as they travel around North and Central America. As they go off on their excursions, passengers immediately become close.

10. Celebrity Cruises’ Expedition Cruise Line

Celebrity’s three expedition ships, Celebrity Xpedition (a catamaran! ), Celebrity Xploration (only 16 passengers! ), and Celebrity Flora (100 passengers! ), are by far the smallest ships in the cruise line’s fleet. All three cruise the Galápagos; some itineraries also include pre- or post-sailing excursions to Ecuador’s mainland or even Peru, where visitors can see Machu Picchu.

9. Hurtigruten from Expedition Cruise Line

Seven ships that travel the seven seas make up Hurtigruten’s adventure fleet. Their itineraries span from polar excursions to trips to West Africa and Cape Verde to the Caribbean and Central America. The 528-passenger MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen, who are identical to one another and both powered by hybrid engines, are the newest ships in the fleet (and named after famed Norwegian explorers). The 2007 construction of the 250-passenger MS Fram resulted in a complete renovation in 2022.

8. Ecoventura by Expedition Cruise Line

You can be sure that your time on board Ecoventura’s fleet of three expedition yachts, each holding 20 guests, will be individualised. If you want to spend more time with the amazing wildlife of the islands, you can combine the two week-long itineraries that the ships run in the Galápagos. Each of the opulent ships has 10 tastefully furnished cabins, a lounge where naturalists provide lectures and briefings prior to excursions, a dining area and bar, a library stocked with scholarly works on the Galápagos, and a sundeck for unwinding. Evolve, Ecoventura’s upcoming megayacht, will debut in the first half of 2023.

7. Quark Expeditions is an expedition cruise line.

Quark Expeditions is not for you if all you want is white sand and turquoise ocean. Each of the cruise company’s four ships is an icebreaker or an ice-strengthened vessel that can transport passengers to the farthest points of the northern and southern oceans. The cruise line specialises in polar adventures. The two icebreakers, in particular, are not particularly luxuriously decorated, though upgrades have made them pleasant. While you are certain to explore some spectacular rough landscape, you may also travel in a quite rugged ship. However, the access to the arctic zones they offer is unmatched and well worth the really realistic expedition experience. However, the posh new ships Ultramarine and World Explorer are a completely different matter. Even two helicopters are included with the former.

6. Quasar from Expedition Cruise Line

Quasar Expeditions, the first luxury line to cruise the Galápagos, is most renowned for its in-depth voyages aboard its two small ships, each of which holds fewer than 32 passengers. But take note of the reputation of said ships: Princess Grace of Monaco’s former yacht, the Grace, is one of the two. The Evolution will let you follow in Darwin’s footsteps as he explored the Galápagos.

5. Atlas Ocean Voyages, a cruise line run by Expedition

The 196-passenger World Navigator, the first ship of Atlas Ocean Voyages, was introduced to the cruise market in 2021. The five-continent luxury expedition cruise line mostly sails in the Arctic and Antarctica, but it has aspirations for further expansion. Later this year, the fleet’s second ship is scheduled to be launched, and three more will follow until 2024. Leisurely sailing trips in the Mediterranean and the British Isles, as well as a 17-night excursion from Cape Town to Tenerife, are among the itineraries offered beyond the polar regions.

4. Silversea Cruises and Expedition Cruise Line

The five expedition ships operated by Silversea, which is renowned for providing opulent hospitality, are no exception. The cruise line’s oldest ship, the 144-passenger Silver Explorer, was constructed in 1989 and ran its Antarctica cruises up until this season. This season, those routes will be replaced by the 200-passenger Silver Endeavor (formerly known as Crystal Endeavor). The 100-passenger Silver Origin is another ship run by Silversea that is based in the Galapagos.

3. National Geographic Expeditions’ Lindblad subsidiary, Expedition Cruise Line

This fleet of 15 ships travels to arduous, remote locations such Arctic Svalbard, Antarctica, Indonesia, and the Galápagos, with passenger capacity ranging from 28 to 148. Adventure often takes precedence over luxury on a Lindblad cruise. Small, basic accommodations are typical aboard cruise ships, but there are many memorable excursions available, such as diving in Borneo or traversing an ice field in Patagonia. However, some of its most recent fleet acquisitions are genuinely opulent, including the National Geographic Islander II, a beautiful ship that began sailing the Galápagos this year, as well as its two polar-sailing expedition ships, the National Geographic Endurance and National Geographic Resolution. An expedition team for each sailing is composed of professionals in disciplines like marine biology and photography.

2. Viking Expedition Cruises is an expedition cruise line.

When Viking was established in 1997, it only offered European river cruises. It quickly began operating in other rivers all around the world , and in 2013 it began operating in the oceans. However, Viking Expeditions was only established in 2020, and its first ship, the 378-passenger Viking Octantis, debuted in early 2022. Later in the year, Viking Polaris, her sister, had her maiden trip.

1. Ponant Expedition Cruise Line

Over the past four years, Ponant has made a significant investment in expedition cruising, introducing seven specially designed ships. Six are part of the cruise line’s Explorer class, which is renowned for its underwater lounges that have hydrophones that pump in ambient noises from the surrounding waters. Le Commandant Charcot, a Polar Class 2-rated icebreaker that arrived at the Geographic North Pole on September 6, 2021, is the seventh and newest ship.

Now with two oceangoing vessels joining Emerald’s more established fleet of nine river-dedicated “Star-Ships,” the decade-old cruise line is extending a brand built on unpretentious luxury to more corners of the world. Christened last August, the 100-guest superyacht, Sakara, is a near twin to Azzurra, which in 2022 ushered in a new era for Emerald by taking to the high seas. Sakara, like its sister, delightfully blurs the line between the luxury and ultra-luxury cruise categories, offering attentive service, gourmet cuisine, tasteful decor, and an eclectic slate of activities at a price point friendly to more budgets. The cherry on top with both superyachts is a slew of perks atypical of small-ship sailing, ranging from an impressively comprehensive spa to a marina platform well equipped for more fun in the sun. Despite having so much good stuff, each vessel is remarkably spacious. Getting a sense of being on a private yacht is easy like Sunday morning. Sakara is homeported in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean through at least March 2026; Azzurra, too, in addition to the Middle East, Kenya, and the Seychelles. Emerald’s river operations are based in Europe and Southeast Asia. Launched in August 2023, the all-inclusive ship is disarmingly beautiful. A sleek navy blue exterior cocoons 461 suites, all with deep balconies, walk-in closets, and marble bathrooms. There is free-flowing Champagne, 7,500 square feet of wellness space, and 18 drinking and dining venues. Icon of the Seas — Royal Caribbean International Arrow

Aboard the Icon, you can really get lost. The behemoth is just plain big, with capacity for nearly 8,000 when combining passengers and crew across 20 decks and 250,800 gross tons. Two and a half laps around the ship’s jogging track, a particular highlight onboard, and you’ve run a mile. So one can find themselves in need of a map—forgetting your sunscreen, for example, in your cabin is a bit of a chore depending on how far you’ve made it. But the abundance of things to do is also narcotic, and you feel a bit like a lotus-eater attempting to navigate it all while keeping your head. Amid the relentless entertainment, not to be missed are the top-notch performers present everywhere, from the Olympic-level aquatics show that you can watch from the windows of the specialty seafood restaurant should seating be elusive (it often is) to the cafeteria, where crew members dressed as food items sing songs reminding (commanding, actually, which is fabulous) passengers to wash their hands at sinks near the entrance. If you wish to enjoy the largest waterpark at sea, by the way, do what I did not and pack a swimsuit without zippers. From $2,249. —Charlie Hobbs

MSC Euribia — MSC Cruises Arrow

Looking at a row of cruise ships in port, you'll spot MSC Euribia right away. She's covered bow to stern by an ocean-themed mural by German artist Alex Flämig that bears the hashtag #SaveTheSeas nodding to the MSC's dedication to sustainable cruising: the European cruise line aims to be net-zero by 2050. MSC Euribia brings it one step closer to that goal, as it's the fleet's greenest ship yet, operating on liquified natural gas (LNG) and running advanced water and waste treatment systems onboard. But enough with the technical details—this mega-ship is packed with activities and entertainment, with 10 restaurants, 21 bars, five pools, two performance venues, and a bevy of family-friendly amenities, like an F1 simulator, a waterpark, and a bowling alley. More adult-oriented highlights include the MSC Aurea Spa, with a thermal suite outfitted with thalassotherapy pools, a salt cave, and a snow room, as well as the Helios Wine Maker bar for wine tastings. Norwegian Viva — Norwegian Cruise Line Arrow

The second entry in Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Prima Class, Viva is like an Irish twin of older sister Prima . There’s the same stateroom count at 1,586, done in pristine and pleasing neutrals, as well as familiarly tricked-out amenities like the zippy 1,400-foot go-kart racing track that undulates over the top decks. Importantly, the Ocean Walk, which my colleague Mercedes Bleth adored aboard the Prima, remains. But round two afforded the premier name in large-ship cruising a chance to tweak and perfect, with an influx of seating options both in the ship’s complimentary dining hall as well as on its myriad decks. Across from the signature “zero-waste” Metropolitan Bar, where yummy drinks are whipped up from the ship’s food waste (I particularly enjoy a buttery Croissant Mai-Tai, for which hardening pastries are boiled down into sweetening syrup; the same is done with banana peels) is an interactive piece of digital art 52 feet wide that sees butterflies flit beside passersby. Oceania Vista — Oceania Cruises Arrow

Vista, Oceania’s first new ship in more than a decade and the first of its Allura Class, debuted with small but mighty upgrades to its previous ships: better stabilizers for a smoother sailing experience; stronger Wi-Fi; lighting and architecture designed to make the ship’s common spaces look and feel roomier; a resort-like pool deck; and balconies in every cabin. The real star of the show, though, is the food and beverage experience— Vista ’s culinary program delivers on its promise of top-quality venues you’ll want to make the rounds at. New to the lineup are Ember, a steakhouse with decor straight out of Napa Valley, and Aquamar Kitchen, serving up lighter fare that doesn’t skimp on taste. Celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or a just-because occasion with the Cellar Masters Wine Luncheon, a five-course meal and wine pairing. And don’t miss the elaborate sea day brunch, where towers of lobster, crab, and caviar await. Of course, the ship is just one destination. The eagerly awaited Scenic Eclipse II is the new and improved version of Scenic's first expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse . Dubbed "discovery yachts" for their sleek look and top-tier service, the sisters are nearly identical, with most changes so subtle that most guests might not even notice them, such as the slight enlargement of the steam room in the spa. But a big difference can be found on deck 10, where a plunge pool with jets for simulated lap swimming has taken the place of two hot tubs—and there's a new Sky Bar up here. Otherwise, Scenic Eclipse II has the same beloved amenities of its sister, most notably 10 exceptional dining experiences, from a sushi bar to a French restaurant with an attached Champagne bar; a 5,920-square-foot spa; two helicopters; and a submersible. Viking Aton — Viking River Cruises Arrow

Viking shares rise 8% after cruise line operator's market debut

Viking is not your typical cruise operator.

Aboard its smaller, upscale vessels, you won't find any kids. In fact, the cruise line doesn't hide the fact that it is going after the high-income baby boomer.

Casinos? Not on these cruise ships.

In Viking Holdings' prospectus, the company said its cruises are for the "thinking person," underscoring its efforts to appeal to the baby boomer traveler who seeks adventure and new experiences.

"They have the money, they have the time and, in my belief, the moment you try to do everything for everybody, you know what happens? You do nothing well. So we are very, very clear focused," Torstein Hagen, CEO and chairman of Viking, told CNBC.

The luxury cruise line was targeting a $10.4 billion valuation in its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday, making it the third-largest cruise operator after Royal Caribbean and Carnival . Norwegian Cruise Line is the fourth largest. Viking started trading Wednesday at $26.15 a share under the ticker " VIK " after pricing at $24 a share.

It closed its first trading day with a gain of more than 8%, ending at $26.10 per share.

Viking upsized its IPO after existing shareholders decided to sell an additional 9 million shares amid strong demand from mutual fund investors, according to a source familiar with the situation.

In 1997, Viking had four ships. It has quickly grown its fleet to 92 vessels, 80 of which are river-based ships that travel down the world's biggest rivers, including the Seine in France and the Nile in Egypt.

"We're different because when you talk about the big cruise lines, they're large in the Caribbean," Hagen said. "We have a tiny sliver in the Caribbean. The rest is Europe."

The timing of Viking's IPO coincides with a strong rebound in cruise bookings. On April 25, Royal Caribbean raised its guidance for 2024 amid a bright outlook for the sector.

"Cruising has really come into the forefront as a competitive choice in travel," Jason Liberty, CEO of Royal Caribbean, said to CNBC in a recent interview. "The overall travel industry is $1.9 trillion. The cruise industry is $56 billion of that. I think cruising is at a much different level than it was pre-pandemic."

While the company's prospectus showed Viking brought in $4.71 billion in sales in 2023, it did report a net loss for the year. What is getting investors excited is the company's revenue per passenger of $7,251, which is much higher than that of any other publicly traded cruise line. Viking's premium price point allows it to make more money on each customer.

Investors will also be looking for details on Viking's expansion plans. Earlier this month, Norwegian Cruise Line said it ordered eight new ships scheduled for delivery over the next 12 years.

Carnival, Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises all have robust portfolios, which has raised concerns of overcapacity weighing on demand. But for now, the industry is focused on how well demand has rebounded from the pandemic and that, even with higher prices , cruising is still cheaper on average than hotel vacations.

UBS leisure analyst Robin Farley said land-based hotel rates are 25% higher than in 2019. During that same time frame, cruise line rates are up 10%.

"The gap between cruising and hotels is wide. That makes cruise compelling right now," Farley said.

After pandemic-related challenges at the beginning of last year, river ships got back to what they do best: exploring inland waterways in Europe, the United States, and select other destinations around the world. Travel + Leisure readers enthusiastically returned, setting out on voyages both classic and new.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

The top three in the river cruise lines were very close in their scores. Viking, the world's largest river cruise company, moved up two spots into the lead position. Tauck, the well-known tour and river-ship operator, retained its No. 2 spot. "The itinerary was thoughtful as well as instructive," wrote one reader who traveled on the Joy . In the No. 3 spot is Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, with praise that included this rave from one voter who sailed on the Maria Theresa : "This was an exceptional cruise. The staff was excellent. I can't say enough about this cruise line and this ship."

Aqua Expeditions, with journeys on the Peruvian Amazon, ranked No. 4, thanks in part to the sophisticated onboard dining. "Its cuisine is rich in local products and designed by one of the most renowned chefs in Peru," noted one reader. Closer to home, No. 5 American Queen Voyages (formerly American Queen Steamboat Company) earned praise — especially from older adults — for its leisurely cruises on the Columbia, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and other U.S. waterways.

Top-ranked Viking does all the major riverways of Europe, with ships also on the Nile and the Mekong, and, new in 2022, on the Mississippi. Readers praised the line's value proposition and shore experiences that go beyond the norm. The "Thinking Man's vacation" is the way one reader who sailed on a Viking ship on the Rhine river put it.

With its fleet of more than 50 contemporary "longships" on rivers such as the Rhine, the Danube, and the Seine, plus additional ships in Europe, Egypt, and Vietnam, T+L's top-ranked river cruise line for 2022 is often praised for its steadiness.
