Algarve Tour 2024: Route revealed, check out all stages and altimetry

Avatar of Marcos Bertelli

“The 50th edition of the Volta ao Algarve, scheduled to take place from February 14 to 18, 2024, will start in Portimão, with the champions being crowned at the top of Malhão in Loulé. An exciting addition will be the introduction of an entirely new Time Trial in Albufeira.

The only Portuguese stage race in the UCI ProSeries circuit will cover a total distance of 752.9 km, with a total elevation gain of 14,455 meters, spread over five stages. The finish of each stage will be marked by bonuses, and the winner of the intermediate sprint in each stage will be awarded a bonus of 6 seconds.”

The inaugural stage, standing out as the longest of the competition, will cover a distance of 200.8 kilometers, connecting Portimão to Lagos. This day promises to be particularly memorable for the sprinters.

The second stage is expected to present the first battle for the general classification over a distance of 171.9 km between Lagoa and the top of Fóia in Monchique. The finish line, located at the highest point in the Algarve, will be preceded by three other mountain ascents. These climbs include the challenges of Alferce (3rd category) and Pomba (2nd category), with the latter situated just 6300 meters from the start of the climb to the finish.

In the third stage, there will be another opportunity for sprinters at the end of 192.2 km between Vila Real de Santo Antonio and Tavira. Along the route, there will be an intermediate sprint, as was the case in 2023. We will see if the same intermediate point will have any impact on the stage outcome in 2024.

The 4th stage brings the significant change of the competition, an individual time trial of 22.2 km between the Marina de Albufeira and the City Hall of Albufeira. The route features climbs and descents characteristic of the time trials in the Volta ao Algarve.

The final stage covering 165.8 km from Faro to Alto do Malhão promises to replicate all the excitement from previous years. The finish coincides with a second-category mountain prize. At 24 km to the finish, the peloton will tackle the first ascent of Malhão after passing through the mountain passages of Vermelhos (km 99) and Alte (km 128.3).

2024 RBC Heritage leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler nears fourth win in five starts with event to finish Monday

Weather prevented the final round from completing, but scheffler is well on his way to continuing his hot streak.

Scottie Scheffler's fourth victory in his last five tournaments will have to wait one more day. With the 2024 RBC Heritage experiencing more than a 2.5-hour weather delay Sunday, tournament action was unable to be completed before nightfall; it will instead leak into the work week. The final round at Harbour Town Golf Links will resume Monday at 8 a.m. ET with Scheffler holding a five-stroke lead at 20 under.

The world No. 1 is well clear of his nearest pursuer, Wyndham Clark, with three holes left in his tournament. Clark, meanwhile, is in the clubhouse at 15 under hoping for another runner-up check behind Scheffler. Others on the golf course like J.T. Poston, Patrick Cantlay and Sahith Theegala stand at that same number with holes to play.

Monday morning may only be a formality as Scheffler looks to be in control of just about everything -- like he has been the last two months.

Scheffler began Sunday in Hilton Head Island with one arm already slipped in the tartan jacket. Possessing a one-stroke lead, the Texan was crowned by many late Saturday evening despite the bevy of stars who had plans to upend him.

After knocking in a 6-foot par save on the 1st, Scheffler more or less turned those predictions into a reality. Chipping in for eagle on the par-5 2nd from long of the green (his 11th hole-out from off the green this season), Scheffler opened a three-stroke lead on the field and never looked back.

Charges were made by many, including a familiar foe in Clark, but none were that threatening. The reigning U.S. Open champion turned in 7-under 29 and tacked on another birdie on the 11th to get within one of Scheffler, but the pressure of perfection proved too much.

Hitting a tree with his second shot on No. 12, Clark's ball ricocheted out of bounds and led to a double bogey. Another dropped shot came on the following hole and all but secured another near miss from the U.S. Open champion.

Collin Morikawa, Ludvig Åberg, Cantlay and Theegala all hovered on the first page of the leaderboard but never truly threatened. Instead, it was Patrick Rodgers who emerged as Scheffler's greatest threat thanks to an eagle-2 at the turn. A bogey a few holes later put an end to his Cinderella story.

Remaining in the wake of mistakes was a spotless Scheffler at 19 under, four ahead of the field. Turning in 3 under, the steadiest man in the game marched forward with a heavy diet of fairways and greens before a spell of thunderstorms halted his momentum on the par-4 12th.

Inclement weather was all that could stop Scheffler as the 27-year-old returned to the golf course more than two hours later and resumed his round without a hitch. While temperatures cooled and winds freshened, Scheffler was unaffected.

He picked off a birdie on the 13th to push his lead to five before a mud ball on the 15th led to his second finding the water on the par 5. It didn't matter as Scheffler launched a pitching wedge onto the surface, spinning it left and utilizing the slope to access the tucked pin. He avoided what would have been his first dropped shot since the 3rd hole on Thursday with an emphatic par save, and he will sleep easy Sunday night knowing five strokes separate him from the field and three holes separate him from victory.

Rick Gehman, Kyle Porter, Patrick McDonald and Greg DuCharme discuss Scottie Scheffler's hold on the RBC Heritage, Nelly Korda's fifth straight victory and Miles Russell finishing top 25 as a 15 year old. Follow & listen to The First Cut on  Apple Podcasts  and  Spotify .

Play called for evening

The final group is on the green on the par-5 15th meaning they will have three holes to play on Monday. Scottie Scheffler faces a par putt from 10 feet to maintain his five-stroke lead as he stands at 20 under.

Five clear with five to go!

The only thing that can stop him is the sunlight at this rate. Scottie Scheffler adds a birdie on 13 to get to 20 under and five clear of the crew at 15 under. Without the world No. 1 this tournament would be very, very good, but alas they are all fighting for first flight honors it appears.

Conditions are considerably harder for these guys. The wind has switched, it's about 10 degrees cooler and they are racing against the clock. Scottie Scheffler and Sepp Straka make par on No. 12 and head to the par-4 13th. Wyndham Clark posts the clubhouse lead at 15 under, four behind Scheffler.

Let's play ball!

Players are on the golf course and play is set to resume. Scottie Scheffler in the final pairing has about 7.5 holes remaining and one hour until sunset meaning this thing is probably going to leak into Monday unfortunately.

Play to resume at 7 p.m.

Coverage information, play to resume at 6 p.m. et.

The expectation is this thing will be finished today as the range is open and play is set to resume in 40 minutes at 6 p.m. ET. This will leave Scottie Scheffler a couple hours to complete just about seven holes as he left off in the middle of the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under.

Play suspended due to weather

The horn has sounded at 4:28 p.m. ET as a large weather system (with lightning) has engulfed Harbour Town. This comes as Scottie Scheffler stands in the 12th fairway with a four-stroke lead at 19 under over a number of pursuers up ahead of him on the golf course. Players are being brought back into the clubhouse as rules officials make an assessment on when play will return.

Rain comin' down hard

Scheffler turns in 33 with three-stroke lead.

Scheffler lets a chance slide by on the short ninth and will instead settle for a 3-under 33 on his front nine. It was highlighted by his eagle-3 on the par-5 2nd and Scheffler will head to the back side with a three-stroke edge.

Theegala thriving

Theegala cards four 3s in a row to end his front nine and get within four of Scottie Scheffler. Sahith spoke yesterday about how cool it is what Scheffler is currently doing and how it is a motivating factor for someone like him to get better. It's a great perspective and Theegala continues to get better and better, but it may not be enough this week as he is four behind with nine to go.

Scottie Scheffler continues dominant run with 2024 RBC Heritage win

S cottie Scheffler spent an extra night in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, which typically wouldn’t be such a drag if not for his wife Meredith being pregnant back home in Dallas and awaiting the couple’s first child later this month.

But Mother Nature had other plans, forcing Scheffler to return to Harbour Town Golf Links on Monday morning to play his final three holes of the 2024 RBC Heritage and wrap up his fourth PGA Tour title in his past five starts.

One week and one day after Scheffler slipped into the famed Green Jacket awarded to the Masters champ for the second time in three years, the 27-year-old Texan added another colorful jacket – this time the trademark Tartan Jacket – to his closet and became the first reigning Masters champion to win the RBC Heritage since Bernhard Langer in 1985.

Scheffler, who was 4-under through 15 holes in the final round and 20-under overall when play was suspended due to darkness on Sunday, made two pars and a finishing bogey and signed for a 3-under 68 on Monday, four shots better than Sahith Theegala (68) and five better than reigning U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark (65) and past FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay (68). He banked another $3.6 million to surpass more than $18 million this season – and it’s still April.

CBS Sports roving reporter Colt Knost, who grew up with Scheffler following him around Dallas’s Royal Oaks Golf Club, already has one of the best nicknames in golf: The Big Gravy. But he may have earned another one – Knost-radamus – for a prediction seemingly as accurate as those of the 16 th century French astrologer Nostradamus. In February 2022, when Scheffler won his first Tour title at the WM Phoenix Open, Knost proclaimed him to be “a worldbeater,” and added, “Now that he’s got that first one, I think the floodgates are going to open for him.”

Scheffler’s latest triumph is his 10 th career title, the first player to win that many times (or more) in three seasons since Dustin Johnson did so between 2015-16 and 2017-18. There’s no indication that this flood of success for the world No. 1 will stop any time soon. Did Knost imagine Scheffler would dominate on the PGA Tour? “I really did,” he said. “He never plays badly and he’s one of the most competitive people I’ve ever met. He will never just go through the motions.”

Some observers suggested that Scheffler would skip the RBC Heritage but Scheffler said he never wavered in his commitment to the tournament. After winning the Masters, Scheffler flew home to Dallas to be with Meredith and didn’t show up to Hilton Head until Tuesday. He played only a nine-hole practice round on Wednesday and spotted much of the field a head start, shanking a bunker shot at his third hole in the first round, making double bogey and needing two late birdies to post 69. He trailed by six and complained of fatigue. But after recharging his batteries, he didn’t make a single bogey or worse until the 72nd hole of the tournament. He shot 65 on Friday and was lurking three back before reminding everyone who is boss with a bogey-free 63 to claim a two-stroke lead.

Scheffler laid down the hammer early, chipping in at the par-5 second hole from 53 feet for eagle. His bump-and-run, executed to perfection, marked his 11 th hole-out of the season. He tacked on a birdie at the par-5 fifth and strung together six consecutive pars before the horn blew. When play resumed he wedged to 6 feet for another birdie. When he made his lone blunder, pulling a 4-iron into the water at the par-5 15th, he took a penalty drop and carved a beautiful shot to 11 feet. Darkness had fallen and he could’ve wait until Monday to strike the par putt but he opted to play on and sank the putt. That snapped a streak of 53 consecutive holes without recording a score of more than a four on his card, dating to the 15 th hole in his first round. But he pumped his fist with glee for keeping a clean card.

“I felt like I was due for one to drop,” said Scheffler, whose closing bogey gave him a winning total 19-under 265. “So I figured might as well hit it now.”

Clark mounted an early charge, making an eagle and six birdies in his first 11 holes to inch within a stroke of the lead. But his effort to run down Scheffler was spoiled at the 12 th hole when Clark tried to punch between trees. His ball struck one of them squarely and ricocheted out of bounds. He made double bogey.

“It was kind of fun for a little bit,” Clark said. “Seemed like maybe we had a chance to do something crazy.”

Only Mother Nature could prolong Scheffler’s victory another day. Play was suspended due to inclement weather at 4:28 p.m. ET, for two hours and 32 minutes. The delay meant they ran out of daylight.

But on Monday, Scheffler capped off winning for the fourth time this year, all of them Signature events. He finished second in the only tournament he did not win during his scorching run. For the week, he topped the field of 69 in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, SG: Tee to Green, SG: Approach the Green and scrambling.

“We’re watching greatness right now,” CBS’s Jim Nantz said.

Nantz’s NFL broadcast partner, former Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo, who played in the Invited Celebrity Classic on PGA Tour Champions last week, estimated he’s played around 500 rounds with Scheffler and said he’s never not broken 70.

“Which is insane,” said Romo who played with him the week before the Masters at Brook Hollow, a Dallas club. “I have not seen a guy hit a golf ball like this since Tiger back in the 2000s when I played with him, the way he was striking the ball, the compression, the trajectory, the spin rate. It was impressive, and I was like, ‘He ain’t losing that tournament.’ ”

No one stopped him at the RBC Heritage either as Scheffler keeps raising the bar in what has the makings of a season for the record books. That is if history doesn't repeat itself — all 10 of his wins have come in the months of February, March and April. So, time will tell if Scheffler can continue his winning ways when the calendar turns to May.

If the imminent birth of his first child wasn’t going to distract or even disrupt Scottie Scheffler at the RBC Heritage, then he was sure to hit a wall after winning the Masters. Instead, he hit paydirt … again.

For the fourth time in his last five starts, Scheffler prevailed over a strong field, this time at Harbour Town Golf Links. A bogey-free, 8-under 63 in the third round positioned him alone in the lead entering the finale for which he’d need two days to score 68 and post 19-under 265. Early on Monday morning, he sealed a three-stroke victory over Sahith Theegala.

Scheffler’s pre-tournament odds to win of +400 at BetMGM felt like they could have been the same to withdraw mid-tournament or not even play at all given that the narrative hovering over his victory at Augusta National Golf Club the previous week was that his wife, Meredith, could go into labor at any time. Scottie made it clear that he’d be taillights if that happened. Instead, he authored another laser show in leading the field of 69 at Harbour Town in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and SG: Approach-the Green.

Scheffler collects 700 FedExCup points and $3.6 million for this victory. In between winning the last two Signature Events (Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard) and prior to his second victory at the Masters, he was the first ever to successfully defend a title at THE PLAYERS Championship, and all of that while atop the Official World Golf Ranking. He’s fully exempt as a PGA TOUR member in a winners category through 2029 and in all of the other three majors through at least 2028. Of course, he’s exempt for life into the Masters.

Theegala was +3300 to win the RBC Heritage. He also finished second alone at The Sentry that launched the series of eight Signature Events.

Patrick Cantlay (+1600) and Wyndham Clark (+2800) shared third place another stroke back. It’s Cantlay’s fifth podium finish at Harbour Town in seven tries, but he’s yet to win the tournament. It’s a record reminiscent of Luke Donald’s 13-for-18 that includes five second-place finishes and two thirds, but no titles. Meanwhile, this is Clark’s first top 25 among six paydays in as many appearances.

Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick (+2500) was among five who tied for 28th. At +1200 to win, Xander Schauffele was second-shortest and finished in a 10-way T18.

The next Signature Event is the Wells Fargo Championship on May 9-12.

LPGA Tour on ESPN+

The Chevron Championship on ESPN+ is part of a two-year deal  announced  in November 2023 in which ESPN+ will present live featured group coverage of eight LPGA Tour tournaments through the 2025 season. The first event under the new agreement was the 2023 CME Group Tour Championship last fall, and The Chevron Championship is the first of four LPGA Tour events on ESPN+ in 2024.

This latest deal continues a longstanding relationship between the LPGA Tour and ESPN.

  • In 2022, ESPN+ streamed the Kroger Queen City Championship presented by P&G and the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship presented by P&G.
  • ESPN televised a schedule of regular LPGA Tour events from 1979-2009, and ABC covered the CME Group Tour Championship from 2015-2018.
  • ESPN aired the first two rounds of the AIG British Open from 1982-2002 and all four rounds from 2010-2015, as well as the first two rounds of the U.S. Women’s Open from 1982-2014.
  • The first golf ever televised on ESPN was the LPGA Sahara Open on Sept. 8, 1979, ESPN’s second day on air.

The remaining slate of LPGA Tour events on ESPN+ this season will be announced later this year.

Jackson holliday’s orioles career is off to an abysmal start: ‘wasn’t expecting this’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Jackson Holliday’s MLB dream has started with a nightmare at the plate.

Holliday, the 20-year-old who entered the season as baseball’s top prospect , has just two hits in 34 at-bats, with 18 strikeouts.

He spoke to The Athletic and kept things in perspective.

Baltimore Orioles rookie second baseman, Jackson Holliday, looking disappointed after striking out in a game against the Los Angeles Angels

“Whenever you’re struggling a little bit, you just start searching,” Holliday said.

“And start creating little habits. I’m just making some adjustments, because you got to. It’s a lot more difficult than Triple-A. I don’t think there’s very many people in the big leagues who haven’t struggled. It just happens to be at the beginning.”

Holliday grew up around the game as the son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday.

“Obviously I wasn’t expecting this,” Jackson said. “I knew what I was getting myself into. It’s the best of the best of the best for a reason. I guess I haven’t had a challenge yet, and this is the first one. … It’s obviously challenging, but I feel like I’m handling it the best that I can.”

While Holliday, who started the season at Triple-A, struggles some of the Orioles’ other young guns are thriving.

Baltimore is off to a 15-8 start with Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, Colton Cowser and Jordan Westburg all raking at the plate.

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde wasn’t sweating Holliday’s slow start.

“It’s not easy on this stage to not get off to the start that you want to,” he said.

Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jackson Holliday (7) warms up during batting practice before a game against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

“Especially if you’re 20 and you have one year of professional experience. You just try to put your arm around him. Try to make sure that he’s OK mentally. He’s just trying to do a little too much. He’s trying to get a hit. He’s trying to produce.

“It’s about being process oriented. As hard as that can possibly be when you look up at the scoreboard and see what your batting average is.”

Evenepoel seals volta ao algarve overall victory on malhão.

Volta ao Algarve stage 5 - As it happened

Remco Evenepoel  (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) held his dominant one-minute-plus advantage on the fifth and final stage of the  Volta ao Algarve  and wrapped up the overall victory on Sunday. His fifth place on stage 5 atop Alto do Malhão provided a solid cushion over several contenders, which included Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) at 1:17 back to finish second overall. Daniel Martínez (Ineos Grenadiers) used his second-place finish on the final climb to secure third overall.

As expected, a final battle developed on the fifth categorised climb of the day, the category 2 Malhão (2.6km at 9.5 per cent). Evenepoel was part of a five-rider surge on the final incline that was won by Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe). The time gained by Martínez with his second-place finish on the stage, just ahead of McNulty, moved him ahead of teammate Ethan Hayter on the final podium as Hayter faded to a 10th-place finish on the stage that moved him to fourth overall.

The overall victory gave Evenepoel his second title at Volta ao Algarve in two years, using a blistering pace in the time trial on Saturday to take this year's title. The 22-year-old Belgian also took the white young riders jersey, while his teammate Fabio Jakobsen secured the points jersey. João Mathias (Tavfer-Mortágua-Ovos Matinados) was the mountain classification winner.

Evenepoel wins stage 4 time trial

Volta ao Algarve stage 4 - As it happened

Putting in a huge effort of nearly a full minute ahead of his closest competitor, Remco Evenepoel  (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) rode to victory and earned the race leader's jersey with a dominant performance on stage 4 of the Volta ao Algarve on Saturday. European time trial champion Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) finished 58 seconds back for second place, while another eight seconds back on the clock was Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) for third place.

Evenepoel's sizzling time across the 32.2km route from Vila Real de Santo António to Tavira disrupted the GC standings with one day remaining for the five-day stage race. Going into the race against the clock, six riders stalked the overall leader, David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) all just one second away.  Gaudu finished 2:09 behind the Belgian and toppled to seventh on GC. Hayter moved to second overall and American Brandon McNulty (USA) UAE Team Emirates moved down one spot to third.

The race will be decided on Sunday on stage 5, with two ascents of the Alto do Malhão, the second time for the uphill battle for the finish.

Jakobsen makes it two on stage 3

Volta ao Algarve stage 3 - As it happened

Dashing across the finish line in Faro in the green points jersey, Fabio Jakobsen won stage 3 at the 2022 Volta ao Algarve. The QuickStep-AlphaVinyl sprinter finished well ahead of Tim Merlier (Alpecin-Fenix) in second place and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) in third.

Stage 3 of the Volta ao Algarve was the longest of the five-day race at 211.4km from Almodovar to Faro. The QuickStep team led out Jakobsen to his second victory in three days, and worked to protect Remco Evenepoel, who held on to fourth place on GC just one second back, for his opportunity to seal an overall victory.

David Guadu (Groupama-FDJ) retained the leader’s jersey by one second ahead of six riders, with Brandon McNuty (UAE Team Emirates) and Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) just ahead of Evenepoel. The GC was expected to shake out a new order after Saturday's stage 4 time trial from Vila Real de Santo António to Tavira on Saturday.

David Gaudu wins crash-marred stage 2 atop Alto da Foia

Volta ao Algarve stage 2 - As it happened

David Gaudu ( Groupama-FDJ ) moved into the overall race lead with a surprising win  on the Alto da Foia at stage 2 of the 2022 Volta ao Algarve on Thursday. Samuele Battistella (Astana Qazaqstan) and Ethan Hayter (Ineos Grenadiers) ran out of pavement to finish second and third, respectively.

Part of a reduced group of a dozen riders who marked each other for six of the final seven kilometres, the Frenchman launched his uphill sprint to just miss being interrupted by a crash in the final 100 metres when Tobias Foss (Jumbo-Visma) and Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) bumped shoulders and hit the deck, disrupting the full-on sprint that was forming around them.

Gaudu took over the race leader’s yellow jersey Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl), while Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) used his fourth-place finish on stage 2 to move one second back in the GC. There were five other riders in the same time, with Remco Evenepoel (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) lurking closest in third.

Volta ao Algarve: Jakobsen wins stage 1

Volta ao Algarve stage 1 - As it happened

A train of QuickStep-AlphaVinyl  riders delivered Fabio Jakobsen to the line in Lagos for the victory of stage 1 at the 2022 Volta ao Algarve . It was the third time he has finished with a sprint victory Lagos, each time taking the race leader's jersey.

With a tailwind blowing the reduced peloton along the straight boulevard next to the Atlantic Ocean, Jordi Meeus (Bora-Hansgrohe) was next across the finish line, followed by Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) and then Alexander Kristoff (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux), but Meeus was later relegated to 32nd for bumping with Kristoff along the barriers. Coquard would take second and Kristoff third.

Stage 1 brought the peloton from Portimão to Lagos for 199km under sunny skies on the southern coast of Portugal. Crosswinds and two massive pileups created some splits in the peloton as they headed to fast finish, and it was all controlled by QuickStep-AlphaVinyl.
