Taxes in Serbia – Everything you need to know!

Home » Taxes in Serbia – Everything you need to know!

Old tax havens can’t serve their purpose anymore, yet popular alternatives mean you’ll have to give up much of your profits? You want to pay less taxes? Welcome to Serbia!

Serbian taxation system belongs to the group of jurisdictions with lowest tax rates in Europe and remained well below Europe average corporate and personal tax rate in 2019.

In Serbia corporate tax rate is 15% and there is no official profit to turnover ratio. Capital gains are separately taxed at the rate that is also 15%.

This is important news for everyone wishing to start new business , especialy having in mind tax rates in other jurisdictions in Europe, like Czech Republic (19%), Hungary (19%) and similar competing solutions, not to mention Western European jurisdictions. Average corporate tax rate in Europe is 22,5%, that puts Serbia in the group of traditionally favorable countries, like Cyprus, where tax rate is only 2,5% lower.

Tax year is the calendar year but may be shorter than 12 months in case activities start or terminate during a calendar year or there is a change in the status of the entity.

The taxable base is calculated in the tax balance sheet, based on the profit and loss account adjusted for tax purposes. Taxable income includes both business income and capital gains. Taxable base is equal to difference between income and expenses.

Dividend tax is 15% and the taxable base is 85% of the profit (profit after corporate tax). Dividend tax may be lowered to 5% by activating double taxation avoidance agreements.

Branch remittance to mother company is not a subject to dividend tax , given that the funds are moving inside the same legal entity, which unarguably makes this structure perfect for revitalization of old or inactive legal entities. Also, special legal arrangements between mother company and the branch give opportunity to receive funds and pay on behalf of the mother company, without generating revenue.

Serbian asset protection and pilot entities remain one of the world’s best , especially given that dividends paid by a Serbian resident company to another Serbian company are exempt from corporate income tax. Dividends received by a Serbian resident company holding at least 10% of the shares in a non-resident company for one year are eligible for a credit for foreign tax paid and the dividends.

Tax filling in Serbia is based on self-assessment.

A tax return and tax balance must be filled within 180 days after the end of the tax period for which the tax return is filled. Financial statements are submitted between February and July for the previous year.

  • VAT rate is 20% and is calculated and payed monthly or quarterly. VAT is paid on goods delivered and services executed in Serbia and for import of goods.

As for accounting, Serbia is up to date with international accounting standards, for example small and medium-sized entities are required to comply with IFRS rules, and medium-sized entities may elect to apply IFRS rules.

Serbia has more than 60 double-taxation avoidance agreements with different countries all over the world.

There is no capital duty or payroll tax in Serbia!

Regarding individuals, the income tax is imposed on income, autonomous business income, authors’ rights, capital, real estate, capital gain and other types of income.

Non-residents are taxed only on income generated in Serbia. For income tax purposes, an individual is considered resident if he/she has a residence or center of business or stays in Serbia for at least 183 days in the total during the tax year. Apostilled tax residence certificate may be obtained 365 days after temporary residence is granted.

  • Income tax rate is maximum 15%., making Serbian income tax not only one of the lowest in Europe, but also in the world.
  • Inheritance tax  is levied on inheritances and gifts at progressive rate between 1.5% (for taxpayers in the second order of succession) and 2.5% (for taxpayers in the third and subsequent orders of succession).
  • Transfer tax  of 2.5% applies on transfer of immovable property (i.e. intellectual property, real property, etc.).
  • Property tax is levied on the occupation of real estate at progressive rates ranging from 0.4% to 2%, which is 2 to 15 times lower than Europe average.

There is no wealth tax in Serbia!

Using our experience and expert knowledge, our team will help you plan and optimize your business and save money using advantages of tax laws and regulations.

Unlocking the Tourism Industry in Serbia

serbia tourist tax

Serbia’s tourism sector, governed by the Law on Tourism, encompasses a diverse range of aspects that guide and regulate tourism-related activities. These aspects include the following:

Tourism Activity Framework

The Law on Tourism in Serbia defines the conditions and procedures for various tourism activities, covering travel organization, travel mediation, tourist agency services, tourist guide and escort services, rent-a-car services, and more. This framework ensures that all facets of tourism are performed in a systematic and regulated manner.

Rights and Obligations

For both tourism service providers and users, this law outlines the rights and obligations that govern their interactions. This includes safeguarding consumer rights, imposing obligations on travel agencies to provide comprehensive information, managing contracts, insurance, guarantees, and more. These provisions are designed to protect and empower both service providers and consumers.

Supervision and Control

To maintain the integrity of the tourism industry, the Law on Tourism establishes a robust system of supervision and control. This entails defining the roles and powers of tourism inspectors, outlining sanctions for violations, and creating a comprehensive framework to ensure compliance with the law.

Development and Promotion

Serbia’s commitment to tourism development and promotion is evident through the law’s provisions. It covers incentives and measures aimed at fostering the growth of the tourism sector. These measures include financing tourism projects, criteria for declaring tourist areas, the national tourist brand, and more, all contributing to the industry’s expansion.

Data Management

The law also addresses data management in tourism activities. This encompasses the registration of guests, electronic payment of residence tax, and the establishment of the central information system in tourism (E-tourist). These elements facilitate efficient data handling within the tourism industry.

Starting a Tourism Agency in Serbia: The Essentials

If you aspire to launch a tourism agency business in Serbia, certain requirements must be met as stipulated by the Law on Tourism12. Here’s a concise breakdown of these prerequisites:

Business Registration and Licensing

First and foremost, you need to register your business entity with the Business Registers Agency . Simultaneously, you must obtain a license for travel organization from the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications. This is the foundation for legally operating a tourism agency in Serbia.

Professional Expertise

Your agency must employ at least one individual who has successfully passed the professional exam for travel organization and possesses a minimum of three years of experience in tourism activities. This ensures that your team has the necessary expertise to offer high-quality services.

Adequate Business Space

To meet the minimum standards for conducting tourism activities, your agency must have suitable business premises. Factors such as size, equipment, and location play a crucial role in determining compliance with these standards.

Financial Assurance

To mitigate risks related to insolvency or bankruptcy, you are required to maintain a deposit in a bank account or hold an insurance policy. The specific amount of the deposit varies depending on the category of the license you are applying for.

Regulatory Compliance

Strict adherence to legal obligations is paramount. This includes providing comprehensive information to consumers, issuing contracts and invoices, and maintaining meticulous records of travel arrangements and services offered. Compliance ensures the ethical and legal operation of your tourism agency.

Embarking on a journey to establish a tourism agency in Serbia requires a deep understanding of the Law on Tourism and its associated requirements. By navigating these legal frameworks and embracing the development incentives outlined in the law, your tourism agency can flourish and contribute to the growth of Serbia’s vibrant tourism sector.

Monthly survey on arrivals and guests' overnight stays covers all types of accommodation establishments (hotels, boarding houses, motels, apartments, camp sites...), thus providing complete coverage. However, certain number of tourists accommodated in establishments owned by physical persons (private rooms, houses and dwellings) is not included as the guests are not registered. Statistical survey on tourist agencies covers agencies with head offices in the Republic of Serbia, which possess the license to mediate in tourism operations.

In all the publications of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, starting from 2022 data on tourist turnover will be published on the basis of the statistical processing of data retrieved from the administrative source, Central Information System in Catering and Tourism (eTourist).

Up to December 2021 inclusive, the data were collected and published based on the statistical survey on tourist arrivals and overnights in accommodation facilities (TU-11).

As the data source has been changed, which has directly impacted the coverage, the results obtained from the survey TU-11 (up to December 2021 inclusive) and from the administrative source eTourist (since January 2022) are not absolutely comparable at all levels.

News related to VAT refund for foreign travellers (TAX FREE)

As of October 15, 2019, the total value of goods, including VAT, on the basis of which purchases in the Republic of Serbia performed by passengers – natural persons, who do not reside, or are in transit in the Republic of Serbia, may obtain a VAT refund, has been reduced from 100 euros (in RSD equivalent as per the middle exchange rate of the National Bank of Serbia) to 6,000 dinars.

In order to exercise this right, other conditions must be fulfilled, namely that:

– these are goods which passengers are transporting abroad, in their personal luggage, for non-commercial purposes;

– the goods are shipped before the expiry of three calendar months after the expiry of the calendar month in which the goods were traded;

– the procedure ensuring the exercise of the said right has been conducted in accordance with regulations.

In order to simplify the procedure of VAT refund to passengers, the Minister of Finance adopted the Rulebook on Amendments to the Rulebook on the Method and Procedure for Obtaining VAT Tax Exemptions with the Right to Deduction of Previous Tax, published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia, No. 80/19, dated November 8, 2019, and effective as of November 16, 2019.

The simplification of the above-mentioned procedure is primarily related to the introduction of the electronic form of the ZPPPDV Form – Request of passengers for VAT refund, as well as to the new form of the ZPPPDV Form. Namely, in addition to the ZPPPDV Form in paper form, as of November 16, 2019, it is also possible to use an electronic form to exercise the right to VAT refund. Form ZPPPDV (regardless of its form) is issued by the seller, at the request of the passenger, whereby ZPPPDV in electronic form is issued only by the seller, who has a contract with the operator.

The VAT refund request shall be submitted to the seller in a paper form or to the operator in an electronic form, noting that the deadline for filing the request has been extended to 12 months from the date of dispatch of the goods abroad.

If the VAT refund request is submitted to the seller, the passenger shall submit to the seller the invoice, that is, the invoices, signed and stamped by the customs authority, and the original of the passenger VAT refund request, signed and stamped by the customs authority, at which the customs authority confirmed that the conditions for VAT refund had been fulfilled and the date of dispatch of goods had been entered.

If a VAT refund request is submitted to the operator, the passenger shall submit to the operator a VAT refund request, certified by an electronic stamp of the customs authority, i.e. in case of a malfunction of the information system, a printed copy of the VAT refund request, signed and stamped by the customs authority, which contains confirmation that the conditions for VAT refund had been fulfilled, as well as that the date of dispatch of goods from the customs territory of the Republic of Serbia had been entered.

The new ZPPPDV Form – Passenger VAT Refund Request (effective as of 16 November 2019) may be downloaded here:

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad. Terrorists worldwide are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, rudimentary Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and vehicles – to more effectively target crowds. Frequently, they target unprotected or vulnerable venues, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

Anti-U.S. Sentiments: While Serbians can be welcoming to visitors, anti-U.S. sentiment is widespread and can be more prevalent around certain anniversaries and some national holidays, including: February 17 (anniversary of Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence), between March 24 and June 10 (the anniversary of the 1999 NATO air campaign against Yugoslavia in response to events in Kosovo), and potentially June 28 (St. Vitus’s Day or Vidovdan).

Sporting Events: There is the potential for violence before, during, and after sporting events. There have been clashes between police and fans in the vicinity of sports venues, which are often located in residential areas.  The Embassy considers matches between certain teams, including Partizan, Rad, and Red Star, to be high risk events because of violence at previous games.  While U.S. citizens have not been targeted in the past, in a few isolated cases non-Serbians have been the victims of sports-related violence. U.S. Government employees are generally advised to avoid the vicinity of high-profile sporting events.

Night Clubs: As a safety precaution due to xenophobic violence, the following clubs have been declared off-limits for U.S. Embassy personnel in Serbia:

  • Klub Šlep (Shlep)
  • Mr. Stefan Braun

Crime:

  • Violent crime in Serbia is most often associated with organized crime activities and hooliganism surrounding high-profile sporting events.
  • Although not traditionally the targets of violent crime, tourists and visitors should maintain a heightened awareness of their surroundings, as in all major cities.
  • Pickpocketing and financial crimes of opportunity are the most common occurrences.
  • Tourists should pay attention to taxi meters and listed fares as some taxi drivers may try to scam foreigners and charge higher rates.

Demonstrations  occur frequently. They may take place in response to political or economic issues, on politically significant holidays, and during international events.

  • Demonstrations can be unpredictable, avoid areas around protests and demonstrations.
  • Past demonstrations have turned violent. Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.
  • Maintain caution if within the vicinity of demonstrations.
  • There is often a heavier than usual police presence near demonstrations and traffic may slow or stop until well after the demonstration ends.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  pages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime:  If you or someone you know becomes the victim of a crime in Serbia, you should contact the local police. Report crimes first to the local police by dialing 192. Remember local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes. Not all police officers speak English.

See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

  • Help you find appropriate medical care
  • Assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • Contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • Explain the local criminal justice process in general terms
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the United States
  • Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • Help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • Replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:   U.S.-citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the Serbian government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on  insurance providers for overseas coverage

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some crimes are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification : If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods:  Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the  U.S. Department of Justice website  for more information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report  – see country reports
  • Human Rights Report  – see country reports
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations in Serbia or on the organization of LGBTQI+ events. Serbia has active and increasingly-visible LGBTQI+ advocacy groups, and several LGBTQI+ bars operate openly and without problems in Belgrade. Many recent LGBTQI+ public eventshave been held without incident. However, LGBTQI+ travelers should exercise caution when visiting Serbia. Many LGBTQI+ persons in Serbia choose not to openly reveal their sexual orientation or show public displays of affection due to security and safety concerns, and many avoid reporting incidents to police. Similarly, many transgender and gender non-conforming persons often find themselves targets of discrimination and violence and therefore may make the choice to hide or modify their identities when in public spaces. Though a growing number of police officers have received training on how to work with LGBTQI+  individuals, including when they are victims of crime, many have limited experience and knowledge.

For further general information on travel abroad by LGBTI individuals, please read our  LGBTI Travel Information  page.

Travelers with Disabilities:  The law in Serbia prohibits discrimination against persons with  physical, sensory, intellectual or mental disabilities, and the law is enforced. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the United States. The most common types of accessibility may include accessible facilities, information, and communication. Expect accessibility to be limited in lodging, and general infrastructure, and common in public transportation. While there is some accessibility for travelers with disabilities in Belgrade and Novi Sad, there are limited to no accessibility in the rest of Serbia.

  • Rental of aids/equipment/devices is available: There several companies that sell, rent and repair aids/equipment/devices. Among the most known ones are Centar Eliksir and Ortopedija mc .

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  women travelers .

Bringing Money into Serbia:  If you enter Serbia with more than 10,000 euro in cash (or equivalent in other currencies), you must declare it to customs. If you fail to do so, Serbian customs may confiscate your money or levy heavy fines. Please review our  customs information  for additional details.

Medical Facilities:  Many doctors and other health care providers in Serbia are highly trained. Equipment and hygiene in hospitals, clinics, and ambulances are usually not up to U.S. standards. U.S. name-brand medicines are often unavailable in Serbia. You can get many medicines and basic medical supplies at private pharmacies. Medical facilities require payment in cash for all services, and do not accept U.S. health insurance. Please review our travel tips for  older travelers .

For emergency services in Serbia, dial 193 (fire-fighters), 194 (paramedics), or 987 (roadside assistance).

Ambulance services are not widely available, and training, availability of emergency responders, and ambulance equipment may be below U.S. standards.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Medications:  Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the  Medicines and Medical Devices Agency  to ensure the medication is legal in Serbia.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality:  Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

 Health facilities in general:

  • Adequate health facilities are available throughout the country but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Some private hospitals may require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Psychological and psychiatric services are limited, even in the larger cities, with hospital-based care only available through government institutions

Medical Tourism and Elective Surgery

  • Medical tourism is a rapidly growing industry, especially in dentistry. People seeking health care overseas should understand that medical systems operate differently from those in the United States and are not subject to the same rules and regulations. Anyone interested in traveling for medical purposes should consult with their local physician before traveling and visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  website for more information on Medical Tourism.
  • We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation in the event of unforeseen medical complications.
  • In case of malpractice, you may pursue legal remedies using local attorneys.

Pharmaceuticals

  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Please visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection  and the  Food and Drug Administration  websites for more information.

Non-Traditional Medicine

  • U.S. citizens have suffered serious complications or died while seeking medical care from non-traditional “healers” and practitioners in Serbia. Homeopathy, herbal remedies, and other non-traditional treatments are practiced in Serbia and promoted as natural alternatives to traditional medicine. Ensure you have access to licensed emergency medical facilities in such cases.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy

  • If you are considering traveling to Serbia to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, please see our  ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • Surrogacy is illegal for foreigners and Serbians in Serbia.

Adventure Travel

  • Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about Adventure Travel.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Roads in Serbia are not always well-maintained, especially in rural areas and in southern Serbia.

  • Exercise caution when driving on roads in southern Serbia in the winter.
  • Drivers should also be cautious when driving along Serbia’s Ibarska Magistrala, the highway between Belgrade and Čačak, because of the higher rate of accidents.
  • Winter fog in Serbia is another concern because it significantly reduces visibility and is especially heavy in the Vojvodina region between Belgrade and the Hungarian border.

Roadside assistance  is available by  dialing 987  locally. The local numbers for the police and ambulance are 192 and 194, respectively.

Traffic Laws:

  • You may use a U.S. driver’s license together with an international driving permit in Serbia for up to six months, after which time you may have to obtain a Serbian driver’s license.

serbia tourist tax

For example, I saw from my booking statement that city tax in Belgrade is 3.45 Euro (I know it should be in dinar) and I will be staying in Belgrade from 29th Sept to 2 Oct. Does that mean the 3.45 Euro will be times 4 (number of days)?

Sorry if my question is not clear enough, also does the hostel in Serbia accept Euro for payment? It is a bit strange that the website I booked the accomodation from ( http://Agoda.com ), converted my local currency (ringgit) to Euro by the end, not Serbian Dinar :S

' class=

Most websites like booking.com or Agoda will convert local currency to Euro, just for ease of use. You usually pay in local currency; however, Serbia is a little bit different (Euro is widely used for bigger transactions -rent, buying a car , maybe wages - and there are exchange offices on every street). I usually just ask in advance whether they want Euro or Dinar - it usually doesn't matter.

Have a good trip!

Hi Awbee, thank you for your information :)

ah okay then, i guess the tax prices stated on that agoda web are for my total stay duration :)

hvala puno, thank you so much

Belgrade Serbia Guide

About serbia tourism, belgrade travel, belgrade accommodation and belgrade tours + serbia map.

Serbia and Belgrade (Beograd), its capital , are popular medical tourism destinations. Many patients travel to Serbia for reconstructive surgery abroad by the Sava Perovic Foundation Surgical Team. However, many of our medical tourists visit Serbia for the absolute minimum amount of time required by the surgeon.

Because a Belgrade flight costs the same even if you stay a few extra days, we recommend you consider including some Serbia attractions and some Belgrade travel in your visit. Sava Perovic Foundation Chairman Dr Rados Djinovic advises patients that: “Urogenital surgery is not fast food. It takes time to heal. And both surgeons and patient must respect the person's healing rules.” In other words, give yourself and your body a break. Consider visiting Belgrade longer and at a more relaxed pace.

Belgrade Serbia in Balkans of southeastern Europe

Belgrade, Serbia has been inhabited for more than 6,000 years. That makes it one of the very oldest & most enduring cities in Europe — despite having been burned to the ground 44 times. It has been an important, strategic city for many hundreds of years and dominated by the Serbs for more than 200 years. Combatants have battled for supremacy over Belgrade in 115 wars. Five Roman emperors were born in what is now Serbia.

Belgrade Serbia, 'Europe's new capital of cool' - The Times of London

Comprised of 30 hills and six river islands, Belgrade has an autonomous city government and is a separate territorial unit in Serbia. It is divided into 17 municipalities which each have their own local council. Although Belgrade is a very small part of Republic Serbia , nearly 25% of the country's people live there. The University of Belgrade , established in 1808, is one of Europe's largest universities with over 90,000 students.

map of Sava Perovic Foundation in Belgrade Serbia

The medical facilities most often used by the Sava Perovic Foundation surgical specialists are in the southern part of Belgrade, not the historical core of Belgrade, southeast of the confluence of the Sava River and Danube River — today's “Kalemegdan” .

Belgrade has a four-season, moderate, continental climate with rainfall evenly spread throughout the year. Temperatures ranges from a high of 27.3° C (81.1° F) in the summer to a low of -2.3° C (27.9° F) in the winter. An excellent, 5-day Belgrade weather forecast for Serbia can be found at Weather Underground .

Serbia map: 'Belgrade has the best nightlife in Europe!' - The Times of London

Hungary is north of Serbia, Romania to the east, Bulgaria to the southeast, Macedonia and Kosovo to the south, Montenegro to the southwest, Bosnia Herzegovina and Croatia to the west. Immediately across the Adriatic Sea to the west is Italy . Belgrade is on almost the same latitude as the Italian cities of Bologna and Milan as well as the French cities of Lyon and Bordeaux . Greece is directly south of Macedonia and Serbia.

Cheap Airline Tickets Travel Deals | Smart Fares Discount Serbia Flights & Low Airfare

  • Bing Travel //www.bing.com/travel/flights
  • Fare Compare //www.farecompare.com/
  • Kayak (compares 9 airlines by lowest fares!) //www.kayak.com/
  • CheapTickets //www.cheaptickets.com/
  • CheapOAir //www.cheapoair.com/

Serbia has an 8% Value Added Tax (VAT) and also a Belgrade city/tourist tax. Don't be surprised if these pop up on a bill (or not).

Only the buyer of a plane ticket can determine the cost because there are multiple classes of passengers on a plane, dozens of airlines, and scores of ways to get from point A to point B on any given day. It takes careful research and many decisions by the buyer.

Main details to study are:

  • number of stops?
  • number of plane changes?
  • time between connecting flights?
  • departure times?
  • arrival times?
  • flight duration?
  • plane used?
  • wide-body or narrow-body?
  • cost of the ticket?
  • price include taxes & fees?
  • any " codesharing " used?

" Code share " means the airline may appear to be the famous international one you know, the final leg of the journey into Belgrade is actually a JAT Airways plane. What appears to be a Lufthansa flight may actually be Thai International.

Tickets from the same Point A to the same Point B can vary tremendously. Economy fare for the most expensive ticket can cost 12 times that of the cheapest ticket.

Always get a FLEXIBLE return ticket if at all possible. If you recover slower than the average person and need to stay longer, or merely want to return home at a more leisurely pace, it will avoid the airline imposing a change penalty on you.

In addition to those in the chart above, there are many other web sites offering airfare comparisons such as 1) Ebookers, 2) Orbitz (seems to practice 'Bait & Switch' — promise cheap, deliver expensive at checkout) , 3) Vayama, 4) Travelocity, 5) Expedia, 6) FlightNetwork ( up to US$382 less than Obitz for same itinerary ), 7) Rumbo ( more expensive than most ) and 8) BookingPoint ( which may arbitrarily refuse to service you ).

Fares quoted by some of the bigger and older ones tend to be quite expensive or at least not very competitive.

In our experience, fares on the sites in our chart tend to have the most affordable prices with the most comprehensive comparisons. Sometimes one site has one quote lower than all the others although it may only be US$10 less.

Sometimes the very best price is available directly from an airline itself. Why pay more unless you have other reasons for choosing a particular airline?

A good flight ticketing web site will allow you to compare and filter proposals by all the things mentioned above as well as:

  • cabin class;
  • global alliance;
  • available seats;
  • fare code; and
  • distance to be travelled.

WARNING #1: The city of Frankfurt, Germany has made it illegal for any plane to land or take off after 11 pm. Do NOT arrange any flight that takes off or lands at or later than 10:30 pm or you may find yourself grounded on the runway by the curfew and spending an unwanted night at a Frankfurt hotel.

WARNING #2: Frankfurt airport security is excessive to an extreme with dozens of staff with little to do. Although always polite, they will screen, scan, inspect and inconvenience you multiple times between arriving flight and departing flight. Anyone who has a camcorder is red flagged for additional excessive tests, inspections and inconvenience — regardless of race or nationality or whether you are travelling with your entire family, including small children. Everyone is suspected of being an enemy of Germany.

WARNING #3: Frankport passengers leaving any “C” gate can expect to walk a kilometer or two to catch a connecting flight. As their information desk will tell you: “It's very far.” Avoid Frankfurt if you can.

Although a visit to Serbia for medical tourism may limit your physical activities, there are many things you can do which are not strenuous. By using one of the convenient Belgrade tours available, you can check out the unique blend of Gothic, Byzantine and Romanesque architecture in Belgrade such as St. Sava Orthodox Church .

Belgrade Aviation Museum, Serbi

Your Belgrade tour could include Kalemegdan Fortress , the Royal Palace , the Nikola Tesla Museum as well as some of the four art museums, 16 historical and cultural museums, seven technical and natural history museums and 12 memorial museums. And don't forget:

  • The Car Museum on Majke Jevrosime Street
  • The 300-year-old house on Cara Dusana Street
  • The black market at Zeleni Venac Pedestrian Passage
  • Mitrovicev Prolaz , the shortest street in Belgrade
  • Kinoteka , an enormous movie collection with a weekly program
  • The archaeological dig at Vincha (creators of earliest writing system??)

For an un guided tour of the city center, ride Tram #2 (Krug Dvojke) .

In the evening, you could catch an opera at the National Theatre or Madlenianum Opera House . And you probably won't tear any stitches at the Grand Casino Belgrade , not far from Hotel Yugoslavia , which has Texas Hold' Em Poker Tournaments daily from 6:30 pm along with Blackjack, American Roulette, Three Card Poker and slot machines.

In Belgrade, it's TGIF every night of the week with cheap drinks, friendly atmosphere, great ambiance, warm hospitality, charm — and few regulatory restrictions. It's difficult to determine who first called Belgrade the “New York of the Balkans ” or “Little Paris” but Belgrade is certainly a continually changing regional nightlife hub regarded as the “the-place-to-be” .

Serbian capacity for night life is nothing short of amazing!' - The New York Times

The Times of London says “Belgrade has the best nightlife in Europe” and has become “Europe's new capital of cool” . And the New York Times reports that “Serbian capacity for night life is nothing short of amazing!” … and that the night clubs, pubs, cocktail bars and “ Splavs ” (barges converted into floating river clubs) are the “greatest pleasure of Belgrade” . Lonely Planet includes Belgrade in its “1000 Ultimate Experiences” . The guidebook concludes “Belgrade rocks!” and calls it one of the best places to party in the world .

Why stay in a medical tourism hospital any more than you need to while in Serbia? If you are feeling better, consider checking out some of the fun places in Belgrade. Prime clubbing areas, in addition to the river banks, are Ada Ciganlija , the area around Republic Square , and the Makiš side of Ada Ciganlija Lake in the summer. Whether you are into Hip-Hop, R&B, Drum n' Bass, Turbofolk *, Underground Electronica, Techno or House, there is a trendy, fun place for you, such as:

  • Bitef Art Café
  • Oh, Cinema!
  • Amsterdam River Club
  • Acapulco (live music nightly)
  • Bar Central
  • The Federal Association of Globe Trotters
  • Cocktail Bar Cruise
  • Bar Baltazar
  • The Tube Club
  • The Underground Club (Andergraund)
  • Insomnia Café, … and the huge
  • Club Magacin 3

Turbo folk: controversial, extremely popular, Serbian sub-genre that blends six types of music: rock-and-roll, electronic dance, Roma, Serbian brass band, Turkish ‘Arabesque’ & Greek pop folk. It's usually performed by provocative, leggy, very well-endowed, young women in minimal, tight, undersized outfits who skillfully merge risqué lyrics. It's NOT for everyone.

You can get some good food at Tri Sesira , Dva Jelena or Big Bull , Indonesian food at the Ginger Restaurant , Moroccan, Arabic and Andalusion food at the Chameleon Restaurant and the Pomodoro Café Pizzaria serves real Italian pizza prepared in wooden oven and top quality espresso . Expect main courses in good restaurants to cost €6-12. Cocktails in a popular bar will cost about €3-6. Expect a beer to range from €1.20 up to €1.80.

Medical tourists may not be inclined to dance until sunrise but Belgrade organizes many annual cultural events and special events throughout the year (except December?) which are often suitable for a person visiting Serbia for health tourism such as:

Belgrade Beer Fest: men's beer stein holding competition

  • FEST (Belgrade Film Festival);
  • BITEF (Belgrade Theatre Festival);
  • BELEF (Belgrade Summer Festival);
  • BEMUS (Belgrade Music Festival);
  • Belgrade Book Fair, and
  • Belgrade Beer Festival (more details below).

Madonna's Sweet and Sticky Concert in Belgrade

Do your own research about the details of what is happening where and when. Sometimes events organized by the private sector are not announced far in advance and appear only on the organizer's web site. For example, in September 2010, Guns N' Roses performed at Belgrade Arena which can seat 23,000 fans. In August 2009, Madonna's 58-concert "Sticky & Sweet" world tour performed in Belgrade and was attended by more than 30,000 fans. The Police , Nick Cave , The Chemical Brothers and José Carreras have all performed in Belgrade.

Rapper and Eurovision winner's producer: Timbaland

Eurovision Song Contest is the most watched non-sporting show in the world with 100 million viewers. In 2008, fans saw the performances of the 25 finalists broadcast live from Belgrade Arena . English is the unofficial common language of Europe, including Serbia, and 15 of the Eurovision finalists sang in English — including the winner from Russia whose producer was American rapper Timbaland .

Here's an overview of some annual events:

  • Serbian Christmas

  • Ice skating is popular in winter at several locations around Belgrade.

Serbia sports: snowboarding and skiing

A medical tourist may not feel up to any sports but relatives or loved ones accompanying a patient might. Serbia sports are popular and Serbians are quite sports-minded — football, basketball, tennis and even Belgrade golf is easily accessible. Golf Klub Beograd , 4 km from the city center and about 10 minutes away from Hyatt Regency Hotel , has a 9-hole, Par 68 course and a driving range that can accommodate up to 50 golfers. Water skiing is available at the end of Ada Ciganlija Lake .

Belgrade is among the greenest capitals in Europe. It's four major green areas span 4,000 hectares (about 9,900 acres) with 182 species of tall trees dominated primarily by maple, chestnut, sycamore, acacia, poplar, ash, birch, pine and fir. Topčider Park is a favorite picnic site. Great War Island (Veliko Ratno Ostrvo) is actually a protected area of the only remaining wetlands of the Danube River. Košutnjak Hill is a forest and park. Jevremovac is a botanical garden and the pre-Roman Kalemegdan Fortress is also a park. Kosutnjak Park is huge. It has skiing in the winter and hiking the rest of the year. There is also Park Prijateljstva .

Interested in going outside Belgrade? One fairly close cultural monument is the Oplenac Royal Mausoleum of the Karadordevic Dynasty at St. George Church on a hill overlooking the town of Topola about 65 km southeast of Belgrade.

Serbia Pyramid

Slightly further away is the Serbia Pyramid under Mt. Rtanj in Šumadija, 150 km southeast of Belgrade. Three great underground rivers are reported to flow under the three-sided, 170 meter tall, natural stone pyramid called "Spike Peak". The Belgrade Center for Research and Ecology wants to excavate in the area and investigate reports of paranormal activity, UFOs, strange markings on the south side seen by satellite, unique plant life and unusual electromagnetic radiation. Arthur C. Clark supported the theory that an actual pyramid lies below with structures and subterranean passages.

Devil's Town, Serbia: Đavolja Varoš

“The Devil's Town” (Đavolja Varoš) , 288 km south of Belgrade, is a rare collection of more than 200 rock towers ranging from 2-25 meters tall and one meter in diameter topped by dark gray andesit stone caps. This protected, centuries-old, 67-hectare natural monument is in two ravines in the village of Đake located 27 km south of Kuršumlija where Dr Rados Djinovic grew up.

Record numbers of tourists are visiting this bizarre landmark with eerie sounds and surrounded by forested hills and mountains. The water from the site's two springs has a unique smell, extremely low pH (1.5) and extremely high mineral content (15 gm/l). To encourage night visits, multi-colored illumination of the rock formations, caves and valleys has been installed.

Devil's Town' in Đake is south of Kuršumlija where Dr Rados Djinovic grew up

There is also a nearby campground, a souvenir shop, and an ethnic restaurant providing local cuisine and mineral water from Prolom Spa. Prolom can be reached by a 9 km hike through the Prolomske Mountains. Many legends compete to explain the creation of “The Devil's Town” . The most popular one says the strangely sculpted figures were formed when God petrified the entire wedding party of the incestuous brother and sister newlyweds.

Belgrade Airport VIP Lounge

Air Serbia flies from most capital cities in Europe to Belgrade . Some combinations of Air Serbia flights cost less than Wizz so do your homework. Wizz's highest fares exceed Jat's lowest. Flights booked months in advance cost the least. Wizz also hasconnections to Rome , Frankfurt , Stockholm , Malmo , Eindhoven , Dortmund and Memmingen .

Belgrade offers the best surgical solutions in the world for any serious urogenital problem and excellent value-for-money medical tourism packages. At the same time, it has “the best nightlife in Europe!”

We hope this makes clear to all our friends & patients around the world that the “Belgrade” in which we operate is the large, popular, safe, beautiful, friendly, trendy, stylish, scenic, historic, cultural, peaceful, strategic capital of Serbia in Europe .

We're not in the tiny American town of Belgrade, Montana with 5,728 people in Gallatin County . We're not in Belgrade, Texas, USA , which is smaller than the tiny town in Montana and ranks only as a “populated place” without even an official name. And were not in “Belgrade Lakes” in the American state of Maine — but Belgrade does have very nice lakes as well as the beautiful Blue Danube!

They passed away on Sunday 7 April at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania due to undisclosed causes, as per their   obituaries published by Leibensperger Funeral Homes.

They were 62 years 202 days old – nine years older than the second-oldest female conjoined twins ever recorded.

Born in Pennsylvania, USA, on 18 September 1961, Lori and George (formerly named Dori) had partially fused skulls, sharing vital blood vessels and 30% of their brains (the frontal and parietal lobes).

Despite being joined at the head, the twins differed in many ways.

Lori was able-bodied but George had spina bifida and could not walk. He sat in a wheelchair-type stool which Lori pushed around.

George enjoyed a successful career as a country singer, whilst Lori was a trophy-winning ten-pin bowler. Lori also worked at a hospital laundry for several years during the ‘90s, arranging her schedule around George’s gigs, which took them around the world to countries including Germany and Japan.

They became the world’s first same-sex conjoined twins to identify as different genders in 2007, when George started presenting as a man after revealing himself to be transgender.

He’d previously gone by the name Reba (after his idol, Reba McEntire) as he disliked the rhyming names that he and Lori were given.

The twins lived independently in a two-bedroom apartment in Pennsylvania. They each had their own room – alternating nights spent in each one – and tried to live their own individual lives as far as possible.

They took turns practising their separate hobbies; they said they effectively ‘zoned out’ when in each other’s room.

They also showered separately, using the shower curtain as a barrier while one showered and the other stood outside the bath.

Whenever they were asked if they wished they’d ever been separated, Lori and George always said no. “Would we be separated? Absolutely not. My theory is: why fix what is not broken?” George said in a 1997 documentary, which can be viewed above.

The twins defied all the predictions of medical professionals who said that they wouldn’t live past the age of 30. They became the oldest female conjoined twins ever in 2015, overtaking Masha and Dasha Krivoshlyapova who died aged 53.

Lori and George are survived by their father, six siblings, several nieces and nephews, and an extended family of friends.
