During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.

Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!

All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.

In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.

If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.

No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. First gig at O2 Brixton (as well as first time seeing Jungle live) and we were blown away by the venue as well as by the quality of the sound. To be honest, I was a bit sceptical about seeing Jungle transpose their unique style in a live setting; however, I would give their effort a solid 8.5 / 10. The show began with a kid breakdancing to one of the song's album and this really put the crowd in a great mood - something the band was able to sustain throughout most the show. Points taken off the overall score mainly due to two things:

1) The difficulty in keeping a high energy level through some of their more subdued track that necessitate the group to remain mostly static behind their instruments

2) A few hiccups here and there - starting "Drops" on the wrong key, then struggling to get it back on track as well as the challenges of staying tight through a few of the more complex numbers

Overall though, a great evening, with much dancing despite being in the Circle (seated area). Busy Earnin was the highlight - and who can hold anything against a band that finishes off their set with confetti cannons spewing gold and silver glitter all over the place?!

Will look to catching them live again for sure!

Really looked forward to this event. More excited even than when we saw Will Smith at Blackpool if that was possible (but that was because even until he came on I couldnt quite believe it was happening, I mean - Will Smith in Blackpool, nahhh).

Anyway, Jungle at The Invisible Wind factory.

I wasnt disappointed. I LOVE Jungle. They are mesmerising to watch. Sounded perfect every song. The moment they start playing their opening riffs the whole crowd are pumped. Venue was superb, unique. Perfect for this type of gig. First time we’d been but I would definitely go again.

If I could only see one band from now on though, it would be these folks. Felt very intimate, like they’re playing to you! Let me be clear, Jungle were Ay-mazing! It was a truly memorable experience. My advice: 1) see Jungle; 2) go to a gig at TIWF; 3) if possible, go see a Jungle gig at TIWF.

Jungle is a fairly new band on the scene. From their head nodding basslines to their funky rhythm, there's nothing to dislike about them. I love listening to them on my phone but watching them live is a completely different experience. The energy they produced on stage shook the crowd like a live wire. I started dancing when they came out and didn't stop until they ended. There wasn't much interaction with the crowd but that was because they were pulling out hit after hit from their amazing album. I was ik euphoria for the whole show. My expectations were met. I left a happy man and would love to see them again.

Just OK. Don't get me wrong, I love Jungle and their debut album. But their concert à la Cigale in Paris was just good enough and somehow disappointing. First we wait one hour after the opening before their dared to show on stage. Then they sounded like they were just rehearsing. The lead vocal has so much soul in his voice that I would have enjoyed to feel it in the acting of the band too. But I did not felt the vibe. To me, it was a bit too clean: no improvisation or so little, not much engagement neither. Maybe it is just me, or this is what you get when you make your audience wait too much.

Good show. Band were good and sounded excellent. However the venue was piss poor. Awful place to see a band. 2/3 of the viewing space is above the stage, which sounds great until you realise that only the people at the front can see - everyone else is blocked from view. Also it took over an hour to get into the show as the door staff and management team at Pryzm were frighteningly inefficient. I have no idea what they were going but we queued for an hour and missed the first 30 minutes. Woeful - will not be attending a gig at New Slang in Pryzm again. Awful experience

The show was amazing... So were the artists! I expected the performance to be great when I was buying the tix, but I didn't expected it to be THAT great. I had a fantastic time on the dancefloor with my friends, the crowd was SUPER nice, SUPERfancy and SUPERpolite.

For me, the greatest joy at the shows is to see musicians to enjoy themselves while performing... And how the band acted on scene was awesome. You can literally see that the guys loved EVERY chord they've made for the audience.

10/10, would totally revisit

Jungle has a pretty cool sound and is super funky but I have to admit I was very skeptical and wasn't sure if they were going to deliver live - Boy was I wrong! The energy was great, them, the band and the back up singers! Jungle is from London and are described as modern soul but they are more than that. You can hear the 70's funk inspiration - perfect for a good concert with loads of dancing. They played at a medium sized venue and thet carried themselves pretty well. I recommend a Jungle concert to anyone :)

I've never seen them in concert. Only bcus they haven't made their way to my city. I guarantee that I'm their #1 FAN in ST. LOUIS, MO!!! I really hope they make it to the midwest in 2020. I will definitely be in attendance. I shared their videos with our main Entertainment Report here in STL. He's jamming to them as I type.

Next Tour Schedule should include - St. Louis, MO - great venues - The Pageant, Delmar Hall or The Ready Room.

MIND. BLOWING. What a great performance by this band. I have been a huge fan of them and they really did not disappoint, I read many reviews of their concerts and everyone said they are good live so my expectations were pretty high. One thing is listening to them on iMusic but another is seeing them live, it was unbelievable, 10/10 flew all the way from Atlanta to Washington to see them and it was totally worth it.

Amazing sound quality (congrats to the sound guys), and incredibly tight band. Voices are top notch. Great energy. Don't remember seeing the Germans (if you excuse me the stereotypical comment) on the crowd dancing so much since a while! Short (they only have an album after all), but loads of fun! 10/10 would see again.

Places to Visit on an Amazon Rainforest Vacation

The mighty jungle spans multiple countries, meaning there are plenty of places to visit in the Amazon Rainforest depending on the region in which you are traveling. There are areas of the Amazon in Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and even Bolivia and Guyana. The Amazon River basin has an extensive network, with many tributaries and different types of forests, that harbor an abundance of flora and fauna. While the Amazon is shared by many countries , Brazil and Peru are the most popular points of entry. In Brazil, Manaus is a common center point for rainforest excursions and in Peru, explorers enter through Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado. People from around the world travel to the Amazon through Brazil and Peru to revel in the beauty and sheer wildness of the jungle. Amazon trips are the perfect getaway from your regular life.

The capital of the state of Amazonas, Manaus can be thought of as the capital for Amazon rainforest trips. The city itself is interesting having developed during the rubber boom of the late 19th century and being home to the famously opulent opera house. However, the real attraction lies in the surrounding rivers and forests. This is one of the most biodiverse regions of the planet, rich in wildlife from monkeys to pink river dolphins. Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge is located approximately 2.5 hours from Manaus, Brazil. Travelers arrive at the lodge by boat or hydroplane. The lodge is located on the Anavilhanas Archipelago which has waters that are not conducive to insect life, meaning mosquitos are not an issue! There are 22 rooms of varying categories and also a swimming pool, TV room, reception lounge, and floating deck which is a rare luxury in this remote part of the world. Puerto Maldonado & Iquitos

Peru has two main areas where tourists can visit Amazon rainforest – Puerto Maldonado and Iquitos. Puerto Maldonado is just a short flight from Cusco and thus very easily combined with a trip to Machu Picchu. Iquitos, in the north of Peru, is the world’s largest city that cannot be reached by road. Iquitos is on the River Amazon itself, while Puerto Maldonado is on the Madre de Dios River, a tributary of the Amazon. The rainforest around Puerto Maldonado has an excellent choice of high-quality jungle lodges including some that offer the chance to kayak, climb trees and fish for piranhas. Iquitos has the choice of lodges and luxury Amazon cruises . Posadas Amazonas is located approximately 2 hours from the city of Puerto Maldonado, Peru. Travelers reach the lodge by a 30-minute van ride from the city and a 1.5-hour boat ride down the Tambopata River. This is a highly recommended lodge for travelers who want a real jungle experience. Nestled in the Tambopata rainforest, part of the greater Amazon rainforest, this lodge is eco-friendly and inside the communal reserve of the Ese Eja Native Community of Infierno. The lodge has 30 rooms in three different categories along with a kitchen, dining area, and relaxation lobby. The rooms are open to the jungle on one side, so you can hear and experience the forest from the comfort of your room. Meals and activities are included in the cost of the lodge. Activities range from boat expeditions to hiking trails that allow you to explore the jungle and encounter various wildlife and exotic flora. All activities are lead by naturalist guides.

Coca, Ecuador is the gateway city to the Amazon Rainforest. Sitting on the banks of the Napo River, Coca is the starting point for exploring the Ecuadorian Amazon. There are some excellent rainforest lodges which are reached by boat from this spot. Our favorite is La Selva Lodge and Spa . La Selva Lodge and Spa in Ecuador is located approximately 3.5 hours from Coca, Ecuador. Travelers take a motorized boat for the majority of the way, then change into wooden canoes for the last 45 minutes through small creeks to reach a clearing on a black water lagoon, where the lodge sits. The lodge hosts various suite rooms, some overlooking the lagoon as well as a relaxation lobby, a dining area, and a spa. Meals and activities are included in the cost of the lodge. Activities range from jungle treks to bird watching to canoe trips to piranha fishing off the dock. You’ll be lead by naturalist guides and indigenous guides to go wildlife spotting.

The Colombian rainforest is the largest department of Colombia, located in the southern part of the country, with one of the sparsest populations of all Colombia. The capital of Leticia is the southern-most city of Colombia, and the jumping-off point for any visit to the Colombia rainforest, which gained its name from the Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana, who wrote that he was attacked by tall women, reminiscent of the Amazonas of ancient Greek mythology. Amazon Rainforest Lodges vs. Amazon River Cruises

There are two main choices when it comes to Amazon Rainforest tours – either stay in a rainforest lodge or book an Amazon river cruise. The main starting points for Amazon cruises are Iquitos in Peru, Manaus in Brazil, and Coca in Ecuador. Typically trips to the Amazon by cruise are from three to seven nights in length and start and end in the same place. On Amazon river tours , the boat makes regular stops and offers exploration by smaller boats or excursions on land. A stay in an Amazon lodge is typically two to four nights long and involves guided walks, boat trips and often night fauna tours in the forest. Travelers who want an active Amazon rainforest trip can choose between a lodge stay, with daily excursions from one central point, or a cruise which anchors in different locations each day.

Packing List for trips to the Amazon Rainforest

Clothing for the amazon.

• Footwear: Most lodges will provide you with rubber boots for walking the trails but ask your travel consultant to double-check this for you. If they don’t, it is important to bring strong footwear that is comfortable with strong ankle support and good grip. Waterproofing your shoes is recommended because you might encounter rain or mud. You’ll also want some comfortable rubber-soled shoes to wear around the lodge when you’re not out exploring.
• Thick Socks: Wearing wool socks will keep moisture away from your feet while you’re trekking through the jungle in your rubber boots.
• Layers: Bring layers and changes of clothing. For your excursions, you’ll need long sleeves, long pants, and high socks. This is for protection from bugs and the sun. You can get breathable quick-dry pants and long sleeve shirts (like the ones used for fishing) which will keep you comfortable so you can focus on the wildlife and flora. When you are relaxing in the lodge, you can wear t-shirts and shorts.
• Extra Clothing: Remember that its quite humid in the Amazon so your clothing won’t always dry even if you hang it up. Most lodges do not have laundry services. So bring extra clothing!
• Rain Gear: Bring a poncho or a waterproof jacket. Many lodges will let you buy these at their offices before you start out on your tour.
• Headwear: Bring a hat or cap to keep the sun out and also your head dry and clean!
• Swimsuit:  You may have a chance to go swimming in the tributaries or even the Amazon River itself. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity without a suit!

Additional Items for your Amazon Vacation

• Backpack: bring a waterproof, sturdy backpack that you can carry your camera, water bottle, binoculars, etc while out on the trails or in the canoes / motorized boats.
• Flashlight and Batteries: A flashlight is important for anyone enjoying the great outdoors, so bring plenty of batteries. A headlamp will work as well as it keeps your hands free. Many lodges will not have electricity throughout the lodge so in the case you need to find something in your bag at night, you’ll want to keep a light source handy. Also, many lodges will have a night walk activity and you can use the flashlight or headlamp to spot night creatures!
• Insect Repellent: Your insect repellent should be at a minimum of 20% DEET. However, you can’t bring this on the plane to Puerto Maldonado or Iquitos, so ask your guide where to buy it when you arrive!
• Bring your binoculars: Jungle animals are often spotted far away so you’ll want to get a good look!
• Wet wipes and/or hand sanitizer
• First Aid Kit: It’s always smart to bring along some pain medication, bandages, blister covers, etc. The guides will have first aid knowledge and some supplies but they are not allowed to administer pain medication.
• Wristwatch: There is not always electricity in the rooms in the lodges, and you’ll need to know the time so that you can meet your guide for each activity!
• Camera, batteries, and extra memory card: Photo opportunities may be around every corner so bring your camera and extra batteries and memory cards.
• Plastic Bags: Plastic Bags can be useful for various reasons but the main reason is to keep dry clothes dry, and wet clothes away from other things in your backpack.
•  Toiletries and Medicine: Anything that you think you may need in terms of toiletries or medicine you should bring with you. Some lodges will have a few basic items if you forget anything. Things like toothpaste, toothbrush, lotions, hairbrush, allergy medicine, antacids, etc. Leave the electronics at home though, you won’t be able to use a hairdryer or curling iron at the lodge.
•  Your Passport:  You must have your original passport with you. You can keep this in the safe in your room.

Our speedboat, jet ski adventure tours, and snorkeling tours do not require any prior expertise. Beginners are encouraged to participate. Before leaving on a tour, all participants will get instructions and an orientation.

Some of our tours and rentals have age restrictions:

Jet Ski Tours: No children under 10 years old. Participants from 10 to 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult on the same jet ski.

Maximum Jet Ski Weight Limit: 225 lbs. per person | 450 lbs. per jet ski.

Rides on speedboats – Minimum age: 3 years |Participants from 3 to 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult in the same boat.

All boat and jet ski drivers must be 18 years of age or older to drive.

The maximum weight limit for a speedboat is 260 lbs. per person and 530 lbs. per boat.

Snorkeling: children under 3 years old are not allowed, and this activity is not recommended for people with asthma and claustrophobia problems.

If the harbormaster deems him unfit to leave due to inclement weather, he will be fully refunded or rescheduled on a different day or time if he so desires. Only workers have the authority to confirm or cancel a tour or rental due to inclement weather. If someone does not show up for the tour at the appointed time, there will be no refund for the people or groups who did not show up. It can rain for a second in Cancun, and then the sun can shine twenty minutes later, so make sure you are on time and prepared to go.

How to Visit Amazon Jungle Peru – Everything You Need to Know

The Amazon Rainforest, often called the Amazon Jungle, is the largest rainforest on Earth. 

It spans multiple countries in South America, including Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana.

Visiting the Amazon Jungle had been on our bucket list for quite some time, so after spending the best 2 days in Lima , we arranged a side trip to the Amazon Jungle Peru.

To help you plan a visit to the Amazon, I’ve compiled this guide that includes our best travel tips, prices and details on visiting the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

The Best Time to Go

Exploring the Amazon Rainforest is a year-round possibility, given its consistent weather conditions throughout the seasons. Anticipate warm, rainy, and humid weather, regardless of the time of year.

The wet season spans from January to June, featuring temperatures ranging from 23 to 30ºC (73 to 86ºF). Daily showers are a common occurrence, sometimes with substantial intensity.

However, it’s important to note that the higher humidity during this period results in more mosquitoes.

The dry season, from July to December, includes the latter half of the year. During this period, temperatures average around 26 to 40ºC (78 to 104ºF). While there is less rain, occasional heavy showers can still occur. Reduced rainfall results in a drier atmosphere in the jungle and lower river levels. 

This creates advantageous conditions for exploration on foot and provides an excellent chance to spot caimans as they contend for diminished food supplies.

The most popular time to visit the Amazon is in July and August. The height of water in the jungle is reasonable, and you have a higher chance of spotting more wildlife.

Where to Go And How to Get There

Two notable areas in the Peruvian Amazon jungle are popular for ecotourism and wildlife experiences.

• Iquitos, the largest city along the Amazon River in the Peru jungle, is the northern gateway to the Peruvian Amazon basin. 
• Puerto Maldonado is a city in southeastern Peru in the Madre de Dios region, part of the Amazon rainforest. It serves as a gateway to the Tambopata and Manu National Reserves, two of the most biodiverse areas in the Amazon rainforest.

When planning your journey, there’s no rule on choosing the best area of the Amazon to visit, but you should consider your itinerary.

For instance, diverting to Iquitos might be impractical if you travel to Cusco or Lima. Instead, destinations like Manu National Park or Puerto Maldonado, the entry point to the Amazon rainforest, are closer and logistically make sense.

You can book a flight to Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado from Lima or Cusco. You can also take a bus from Cusco to reach these cities to begin your Amazon Jungle experience; this is the most affordable option.

While visiting Lima, we booked this 3 Day Jungle Tour to explore the Tambopata National Reserve.

We’d recommend setting aside a minimum of three days to visit the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

Book A Tour or Travel Independently

We usually travel independently and book logistics as we go; however, after crunching numbers and working out the logistics of getting around in the Amazon Jungle in Peru, we found that it was much easier and more economical for us to book a packaged tour.

There are many tour operators to choose from online. After comparing many options, we decided to book this 3 Day/2 Night Amazon Jungle trip as it’s a Peruvian-owned company with excellent reviews from past guests.

For this complete package, including airport transfers, 2 nights’ accommodation in a bungalow Garden Lodge (with private ensuite facilities), all meals, drinking water, activities and a local guide, we paid approximately USD 350 per person, as we booked a nicer room with private facilities.

Where To Stay

The overall accommodation style in the Amazon Jungle Peru is typically jungle lodges in various regions. 

The choice is up to you whether you opt for a remarkably luxurious or more basic option. You can expect comfortable accommodations in these lodges, usually in twin-share or double cabins with attached ensuite bathrooms.

It’s important to remember that your lodge is in a remote location, so electricity may only be available for specific hours during the day. This was the case with our lodge, so whenever electricity was available, take the opportunity to charge your phone, cameras etc.

The rooms have mosquito nets and fans to ensure a cool and protected night’s sleep.

You may choose a bungalow accommodation with shared bathroom facilities for those travelling on a budget.

Most of the lodges are within a 1-1.5 hour boat ride from Puerto Maldonado Boat Pier.

Accommodation providers usually offer all-inclusive packages that include transfers from Puerto Maldonado airport, accommodation, all meals, and several daily excursions. 

Amazon Jungle Lodges in Peru

Numerous jungle lodges are situated along the river, ranging from inexpensive ones with very basic amenities to more stylish lodges with comfortable bungalows.

Here are my top picks for Amazon jungle lodges for varying budgets:

BUDGET: Hacienda Herrera Tambopata – Offering garden views, this property provides accommodation, a garden and a terrace. Pick up and drop off from airport or bus station is provided for free, has to contact property for arrengments. Is a 20 min boat ride from El Triunfo Port to the lodge.

MID-RANGE: Amazon Planet – A true ecolodge within a protected area surrounded by rainforest and wild animals in their natural habitat. Free airport transfers, river transfers, all meals are included. Jungle excursions and adventure activities in the area such as treking, biking, fishing, and boat rides can be arranged.

Full program itineraries are available for an add-on rate. The rooms in Amazon Planet feature private bathrooms and terraces. Breakfast is served daily. The on-site restaurant offers a daily menu and can cater to special diets upon request.

LUXURY: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica – Located in the Peru Amazon Jungle, this hotel features tours to the rainforest, a massage spa overlooking the Madre de Dios forest and rooms with hammocks and balconies. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the rates.

There are eco-friendly bathroom amenities and private bathrooms. The hotel is a 45-minute boat ride from Puerto Maldonado. Cusco is a 25-minute flight away.

What You Can See in the Amazon Jungle in Peru

The Amazon jungle in Peru is like a vast garden with many plants. You’ll find towering trees, like the Ceiba and Kapok, that stand really tall. Some trees, like the rubber tree, have been essential for making rubber.

There are plants that people have used for medicine for a long time, like the Cinchona tree, which helps treat malaria, and the Cat’s Claw, which indigenous communities have used traditionally.

On the trees, you’ll see colourful plants called bromeliads and orchids. Palms, like the Açaí and Assai, give us tasty fruits.

Vines and climbers, such as the vanilla orchid and passionflower, make the forest look even more beautiful. All these plants create a rich and amazing environment in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.

The most commonly seen animals in the Amazon jungle are monkeys (squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys), caimans, sloths, frogs, tarantulas, piranhas, and birds such as herons, and the hoatzin (stink bird).

If you’re fortunate, you may see the endangered giant otter.

Of course, the frequency and proximity of wildlife sightings often depend on luck when exploring the Amazon Jungle.

Nonetheless, it remains a fantastic destination with ample opportunities to encounter and observe various forms of wildlife.

Activities in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle

With its distinctive geography and captivating flora and fauna, the Amazon Jungle in Peru offers some incredible places to visit and activities to engage in.

What to Pack for Amazon Jungle in Peru

We recommend packing some lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, and you will need a waterproof jacket (or poncho ); plus, it’s worth considering waterproof pants . 

TIP: Dress in light, neutral colours to avoid mosquitoes.

Trousers and long sleeves are necessary when taking jungle walks to protect yourself from mosquitoes and spikey plants.

Introduction

We offer jungle lodge tours to Maçarico. Maçarico is located only 90 kilometers from Manaus. You can choose between two to five days of adventure.

You will stay in the jungle lodge at night and do trips to the jungle during the day. You will get to experience some amazing Amazon nature and learn many things about the plants and animals of the Amazon river and rainforest.

Your tour always starts and ends in Manaus. We pick you up at your hotel in Manaus, on the morning of your first tour day. From here all transportation is included. After the tour, we bring you back to your hotel. If you want to be dropped off at another location, like for example the airport, that’s no problem at all.

You get picked up at 8 a.m. at your hotel and from there we go to the Seasa Port where we´ll get on board the speed boat that will cross us to the other side of the amazon river. At some point, the captain will stop at the amazing Meeting Of The Waters for pictures and information will be given about this phenomenon that happens between the Rio Negro and the Rio Solimões.

After we cross the Rio Solimões (Amazon river) we arrive at a town called Careiro da Várzea. From Careiro´s town, we drive on a kombi van for about an hour on the highway BR319 to arrive at the Mamori area where we´ll get onboard again on a speedboat to reach our lodge around 11:30 a.m.

At noon we’ll have lunch. Afterward, you have two hours to get to know the lodge, relax, and swim in the amazon river. The activities start around 2 p.m. We sail out on indigenous wooden canoes for animals and bird spotting where you might get the chance to see sloths, monkeys, and river dolphins (botos).

We´ll also go out to fish piranhas and if you like it we´ll prepare it for dinner for you. After we teach how to catch piranhas we´ll watch the beautiful amazonian sunset. We will return to the lodge around 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

After dinner, we´ll sail out to find and catch a wild caiman. The guide will catch the caiman and provide you with information about these prehistoric animals. After that, the guide will put it back in the water. He won´t hurt the caiman at any point. After this intense night activity, we will return back to the lodge to rest for the next day.

At 5:30 a.m. we start off the day by watching the amazonian sunrise. After the sunrise, we come back to the lodge to have a delicious traditional amazonian breakfast at 7 a.m. At 8 a.m. we´ll take you on a jungle trek. We´ll drive for 30 minutes until we arrive at the starting point of our jungle hiking.

We´ll be hiking from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m. During the hike, the guide will give you explanations about the flora and fauna of the Amazon jungle. You will learn all about the pharmaceutical trees, leaves, vines, and a lot more of what nature can give us. There is a good chance to see monkeys, sloths, snakes, tarantula spiders, dart frogs, and other interesting animals and insects of the amazon jungle.

We´ll go back to the lodge for lunch which will be served at noon. After lunch, you will have time to prepare yourself to leave the lodge at 2:00 p.m. for our next adventure.

We´ll drive for 40 minutes until a place in the jungle where we are going to set up our jungle camp. We will prepare the hammocks and mosquito nets for the night. After we have set our camp we´ll prepare our dinner. For vegetarians, there are a lot of different fruits and vegetables in the jungle that are eatable and good tasting. If you would like chicken or rice we´ll bring it with us from the lodge, but we recommend the amazonian way and catch our own fish with spears. You can choose whatever option you prefer.

We will make an open campfire in the jungle where we will make all our food. After dinner, we will look at the stars and tell stories about the amazonian people and our culture. This night we will sleep outside in the jungle. Prepare yourself for one of the most amazing nights of your lifetime.

We’ll have breakfast at 8 a.m. After breakfast, we’ll leave our camp to go visit one of the many native villages of the Amazon jungle. We’ll learn about their way of living and the guide will explain how these people live, grow crops, and feed their families. For example, the manioc root, which they use to produce a flour called Farinha.

You will learn about a culture that thrives without electricity and any other kind of luxury. For many, it´s an eye-opener to experience how it really is to live in the Amazon jungle. We´ll have lunch together with the native people. After lunch, we will go out again to spot animals in small canoes for some of the animals that usually walk on the riverbanks.

We´ll use small canoes and paddles to try and make as little noise as possible to not scare off the animals. We will also do bird watching, and spend time enjoying the sunset. After sunset, we will return back to the native community.

At night we will go out spearfishing together with the natives. We will also try to spot some poisonous snakes in the trees. After this night’s activity, we will return back to the native house where we are going to have dinner. We will eat the fish that we caught during our spearfishing. This night we´ll be sleeping in the house of the native family with hammocks and mosquito nets.

We get up at 7 a.m. to have breakfast. After breakfast we will leave the native house for our last hiking or canoeing, depending on the season. If it is the dry season we will do a hike in the floating jungle. If it is the rainy season we will visit the same floating jungle by canoes. There is a big chance to see a boa constrictor floating in the jungle. After the hike/canoe in the wetlands, we will return back to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch, you will have time to relax and prepare your stuff to leave at 2 p.m. We will return back to Manaus the same way we came. We will arrive back in Manaus at 4 p.m. and our driver will take you from the Seasa Port back to your hotel and that is the end of our tour.

God! That was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life! I will always dream of the “hunting” of the Caymans during the night, where we could see the stars and the planets in the sky. Also, the night camping was unbelievable. Our guide Sami was a real survivor of the jungle and a really gifted man. So if you are thinking about taking a trip to the Amazon, I suggest Amazon Deep Jungle Tours 100%!!!

This was a great trip, where we got to witness what living in the Amazon was like. Juma was our guide, and knowledgeable about all the ways of living in the Amazon. He led us on the nature hike, pirana fishing, dolphin watching, and caiman catching. It was a very unique experience to sleep outside in a hammock and hear all the numerous sounds of Amazonian animals at night. Overall, a great trip to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil!

I will never forget the magnificent trip to the Amazon. We camped in the jungle and learned many survival techniques in the jungle with the indigenous people. We had two encounters with jaguars, one spotted and one rare black jaguar. It was all wonderful and I have to thank everyone who made this tour come true. Super recommended to my friends looking for an adventure in the jungle.

I went on the adventure tour in Maraa and I would highly recommend it. It was an unbelievable experience! The team that was with me was the best. Samir knows everything about animals and plants. Mikaias’ skills are absolutely mental! He can spear a fish in the water at night from 3 meters away! Really impressive! If you want to experience a real slice of life in the jungle you should definitely go through this company. I made memories that I will cherish forever.

We had an amazing experience with Amazon Deep Jungle Tours. The guides were excellent, and what we saw and experienced was great, piranha fishing, fishing, and hunting, canoeing, hiking through the forest with experienced explanations, traveling the river by day and night, camping in a great spot, swimming, wildlife, crocodile spotting. Amazon is not to be taken lightly. It is a place that requires a lot of respect and good guidance. The guys did a great job on that.

God! That was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life! I will always dream of the “hunting” of the Caymans during the night, where we could see the stars and the planets in the sky. This was a great trip, where we got to witness what living in the Amazon was like. We saw animals such as dolphins, caiman, and an iguana which were really cool. It was a very unique experience to sleep outside in a hammock and hear all the numerous sounds of Amazonian animals at night. Overall, a great trip to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil!

I will never forget the magnificent trip to the Amazon. We camped in the jungle and learned many survival techniques with the indigenous people. We saw a huge amount of wild animals, like giant otters, tarantulas, caimans, sloths, and monkeys, and we had two encounters with jaguars, one spotted and one rare black jaguar.

I went on the adventure tour in Maraa and I would highly recommend. It was an unbelievable experience! The team that was with me was the best. We were like a little family for a week and spent an amazing time together. Those guys were awesome. If you want to experience a real slice of life in the jungle you should definitely go through this company. I made memories that I will cherish forever.

About the Cuyabeno Reserve

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is the second largest national park in Ecuador with total of 603,380 ha. The reserve has a variety of different ecosystems for example primary rainforest, swamps, floated and semi floated forest. The area has one of the highest level of biodiversity in the world so it is a good place for spotting wildlife.

The Cuyabeno river and the tributary (Ant River) make a river system which is fun to explore on a canoe. There are also a system of 14 lakes, perfect places to see the sunset.

Cuyabeno Reserve provides habitat for over 500 species of birds, 10 species of monkeys, anacondas, caimans, jaguars, pink river dolphins, manatees, fishes (for example arapaima and piranha), armadillos and many more animals. The Siona people is an indigenous tribe living on the area. On the community day you will visit the Siona tribe, learn how they prepare traditional yucca bread and meet a Shaman from the community. The Shaman will give a demonstration about shamanism and the healing traditions that the Siona´s have been practicing for a long time. Eco-tourism benefits the local Siona communities by giving them jobs.

Cuyabeno Reserve has two seasons. The rainy season is from March to August and the dry season is from September to February. Also during the dry season it can rain because the climate in the Cuyabeno Reserve is a tropical rain-forest. The tours are done all year round.

Jungles and rainforests have been frontiers traversed by explorers for centuries. They have a mystique, perpetuated by novels and movies, such as the epic 2016 flick Tarzan.

How a Yucatan jungle hike could help revive Mexico's ailing Maya communities

Inland from Yucatán’s white beaches, the long-distance Camino del Mayab hiking trail is set to revive ailing Maya communities with jungle treks weaving past overgrown haciendas and secret cenotes.

It’s an indescribable feeling, plunging into cool, clear water after walking for hours through the Yucatán jungle. I’m surrounded by the tall overhanging cliff walls of a cenote — a type of freshwater sinkhole believed by the ancient Maya to be portals to the underworld, and often used as sacrificial sites. The water is a mix of emerald green and turquoise, with large lily pads floating on the surface and thick alamo tree roots plunging to its depths from the cliffs like giant eels.

It’s day one of my five-day hike along Mexico’s Camino del Mayab — a long-distance hiking and biking trail opened in late 2020 — and the 32C heat and 80% humidity is getting to me. But with 11 miles to walk before sunset, there’s only so much time for pool dips. Following a dirt path flanked by thick jungle, we reach San Antonio Tzacalá, a small Maya village built around the crumbling red walls of a 19th-century hacienda. Abandoned in the mid-1900s, the Spanish estate has been lost to nature: entire alamo trees rise from the roof like squatting giants, while creeping vines pierce through thick cement as if it were honeycomb.

“Yucatán is the land of cenotes and haciendas,” says Cristian Sulub, a fresh-faced 22-year-old wearing rimless, rectangular glasses and a straw hat. Cristian, who is of Maya descent, is San Antonio Tzacalá’s youngest-ever mayor and a keen historian. When he heard we were walking through his town, he came to greet us. “Cenotes represent our ancient past; haciendas our colonial history.”

The hacienda in San Antonio Tzacalá is one of hundreds in Yucatán, built during the 19th century when the henequen trade took off. Henequen, also known as sisal, is a type of fibrous agave native to the Yucatán Peninsula, used by the ancient Maya for thousands of years to make ropes, baskets and fishing lines. But in the mid-19th century, the Spanish began exporting Yucatán’s ‘green gold’ to the US and Europe. Forcing the Indigenous population to work the fields for little or no pay, European plantation owners grew extremely wealthy, building railroads, factories and more than 300 haciendas across Yucatán.

Three years in the making, the Camino del Mayab is a 68-mile trail created to help reverse centuries of colonial exploitation in Yucatán — ‘Mayab’ is what the ancient Maya called Yucatán before the Spanish changed its name in the 16th century. After the Mexican Revolution of the 1910s and the Great Depression of the 1930s, Yucatán’s henequen industry began to decline, with most haciendas closing by the 1950s. Inequality and prejudice towards the Maya, however, continued. Today, higher education, jobs and access to medical care are limited outside of Mérida and Cancún, forcing many Maya people to abandon their villages and way of life.

“The Maya village is under threat,” says our guide Uri Huesca, as we make our way out of the crumbling hacienda. Uri is the co-founder of EcoGuerreros Yucatán, the environmental organisation that founded and now manages the Camino del Mayab. “We want to empower Maya communities to make a living without leaving their homelands, while also sharing their history and culture with the world.”

The Camino del Mayab follows old henequen transportation routes through 14 Maya communities, from the former plantation village of Dzoyaxché to the ancient Maya city of Mayapan. The trail was developed in partnership with Maya communities, and 80% of its profits remain in Maya villages through the hiring of local guides, camping on community-owned lands and eating home-cooked meals prepared by village cooks.

Continuing to Pebá, a two-hour walk from San Antonio Tzacalá, we spot a flash of electric blue and pale orange among a sea of endless green. It’s a Yucatán jay, a bird endemic to the peninsula. Further on, perching on the branches of an 80-year-old ceiba tree, is a turquoise-browed motmot, a cenote-dwelling bird the ancient Maya used to find fresh water.

“Yucatán is one of Mexico’s most biodiverse states,” says Uri, as we pass a Middle American indigo snake coiled under a bush of purple pea flowers. “But it’s at risk of being destroyed.”

There are almost 400 bird species in Yucatán and over 100 mammals, many of which are endangered. Jaguars, tapirs and ocelots, Uri explains, would have once been abundant here, but due to habitat loss — some 50,000 acres of jungle are lost annually in Yucatán to farmland and illegal logging — they’ve become increasingly rare.

Environmental activists have also blamed the new Tren Maya — a controversial 966-mile train line launched in December 2023 that crosses the Yucatán jungle — for endangering the peninsula’s biodiversity.

“The Camino del Mayab isn’t just about saving Maya culture, it’s about protecting nature, too,” says Uri. EcoGuerreros has helped to establish hundreds of acres of ecological reserves in Yucatán through a network of protected ejidos, communal land managed by Indigenous communities.

The next day, a Pebá local known as Don Octavio — a slight, elderly man with deep lines across his forehead and dirt beneath his nails — guides us through the jungle to the Maya village of Yaxcopoil, home to one of Yucatán’s best-preserved haciendas. Wearing smart suit trousers and leather sandals, Don Octavio hacks a path through the thick overgrowth with his machete, pointing out medicinal herbs and wildflowers pollinated by meliponas, stingless bees whose honey has been cultivated by the Maya for 3,000 years.  

Among the vegetation are a few surviving henequen from an abandoned plantation Don Octavio used to work on. Unlike most plantations in Yucatán, which closed in the 1950s, this one continued to operate for a few decades longer. Don Octavio says the plantation owners treated him well, and the work allowed him to stay in his village. “Now look at it,” he says, pointing to a pile of rubble that would have once housed a Maya family. “Everyone’s leaving to work in Mérida. Soon, there will be no one left.”

Over the next few days, as we walk 40 miles from Yaxcopoil towards Mayapan, I watch pink fog lift from the jungle canopy at sunrise, eat pulled pork slow-cooked underground and fire-toasted tortillas in the homes of Maya families, and camp beneath a sky full of stars. But swimming in the region’s cavernous cenotes is what I look forward to most.  

I imagined the end of my journey on the Camino del Mayab stood atop Mayapan’s Temple of Kukulcan, seeing the trail I’d just walked sprawled across the jungle beneath me. But protests over entrance fees have closed the trail’s finishing point. Instead, I’m on the shores of a cenote near X-Kanchakán, where a white-robed shaman is summoning the Maya gods under the thundering rain. His chanting — spoken in Yucatec Maya — reverberates across the water with a deafening clap of thunder. When he finishes, the rain clears and the sky lights up in a strange silver-purple hue. “A good omen,” says the shaman in Spanish. “You’re welcome here, traveller.”

We both thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Our guide in Bangkok, Toto, was brilliant. Very knowledgeable and attentive and great fun. Bangkok is a very busy, vibrant city and it was great to have a knowledgeable guide to lead us through the mayhem! When we returned to Bangkok at the end of the trip we felt much more confident about navigating ourselves around because of the advise he had given. The highlight for us was the jungle trek and again we had a great guide, See. Again he mixed information and advice with a good sense of humour and also the ability to rustle up very tasty meals! The walking was not hard going and with so many beautiful and interesting things to see along the way, not to mention the fabulous scenery, it passed easily. Staying in the villages was an interesting experience. The noise at night was incredible. Who knew frogs can make so much noise! The accommodation was generally of a reasonable quality although the Bangkok and Chiang Mai hotels were rather tired. They were very good locations though. The floating hotel was a beautiful spot. The overnight train journeys were ok although I would have welcomed the chance to be able to check into the hotel and have a shower when we arrived in the morning. It is very difficult to get a good nights sleep on the train so to just have to drop your bags at the hotel and not be able to get into our room until mid afternoon was not great. Another option would be to offer first class seats on the train which from the look of it would offer the chance of a better nights sleep. Overall I felt the tour offered a good balance between organised activities and having time to ourselves to do our own thing. Our group was very small (3) which luckily for us worked ok but a larger group may have been better.

Highlights of Vietnam

The tour with Exodus was fabulous. Couldn’t rate it more highly. But the communication provided by Tour Radar was dreadful. The other tour members all booked directly with Exodus and received information about the group composition, airport transfers, pre tour briefing etc before traveling. Despite reaching out to Tour Radar I received nothing. I would never ever use your radar again but would definitely book directly with Exodus.

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

Dinosaurs Take Over DC Comics in July 2024

The Birds of Prey aren’t the only DC characters dealing with dinosaurs in summer 2024, as July’s solicitations reveal other series going prehistoric. DC’s solicits confirm that Batman and Robin #11 by Joshua Williamson and Juan Ferreyra kicks off a new arc as Bruce and Damian Wayne arrive at Dinosaur Island. Additionally, the anthology series Batman: The Brave and the Bold continues a storyline in #15 featuring Booster Gold teaming up with the Jurassic League: dinosaur versions of DC’s Justice League heroes . The Birds of Prey may feature the summer’s most dino-action, though, as Romero’s cover is the only one showing superheroes actually going toe-to-toe with the prehistoric beasts.

With new costumes that could be right out of Marvel’s Savage Land, DC’s superheroines are ready to tackle the Jurassic land they have to contend with as they track down their team’s creator.
