One of the rows that looks set to engulf Sir Keir Starmer's early tenure is the two child benefit cap.

This is the policy that means parents can only claim welfare for two offspring in a household - regardless of how many children live there.

While the Labour frontbench has signalled it wants to end the policy, the prime minister has indicated it is not in a position to do so due to the country's finances.

There is pressure within parts of the party to take action, and from opposition parties as well.

The SNP has written today to Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar - who is not an MP - urging him to tell Scottish Labour MPs to back their amendment to the King's Speech seeking for the cap to be abolished.

With the government running a majority of 180, it would require a very large rebellion for them to be defeated.

While Sir Keir Starmer can fend off rebellion from opponents easily, a protracted fight with his own benches so early in the life of his government would probably be less than desirable.

Andrew Mitchell, the Conservative's shadow foreign secretary, was speaking to Sky News a little earlier.

He was asked about the attack on Donald Trump over the weekend.

Mr Mitchell condemned the incident - and said political debate has "coarsened" in the UK because of social media.

On the specifics of Saturday's events, Mr Mitchell says "everyone has to learn lessons" - including those around the former president.

He also says: "Of course, there's the whole issue of guns and gun licensing in America which lurks in the foreground rather than the background on all of this".

Mr Mitchell says he prefers to "play the ball and not the man or woman" in politics - and encourages other people to do the same.

He says politicians respecting each other will "perhaps" lead to more respect for politicians from the public.

Speaking to Sky News a little earlier, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy was asked about the attack on Donald Trump over the weekend - and whether the government had concerns about the political situation in the US.

Ms Nandy said the attack was "incredibly concerning" to Americans and the world.

She added that it was "extremely worrying when you consider that we've had a lot of division, and hatred and poison spreading into politics on both sides of the Atlantic - and across Europe as well in recent times".

The culture secretary reiterated that it was for the US people to choose their next leader.

She added that the UK-US relationship "matters" regardless of who is in the White House, with issues like defence, security and climate change all important for both London and Washington to work together on.

"It's our intention as the newly elected government here in the UK, that whoever wins that election, that that relationship continues," Ms Nandy said.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy was at the Euro 2024 final last night in Berlin.

Speaking to Sky News this morning, Ms Nandy says the current funding for grassroots football is set to expire in April - but the government is committing to continue it.

It is worth noting that not doing so would have been a very drastic step.

Speaking about the final, Ms Nandy says it's not for her to comment on the status of Gareth Southgate as manager of the Three Lions.

But she does praise Southgate for his contribution to football - saying it has been "enormous" and that he has assembled a team of footballers "drawn from every community across the country who look and sound and feel like modern Britain".

The minister says the football team has told "an inclusive story" about the country at a time when it has been "very difficult for people to feel part of our national story".

Ms Nandy explicitly blames the previous government - saying Labour "will be far more Gareth Southgate and far less Michael Gove".

And Mr Darling, former leader of Torbay council, could be heard gently telling her to "stay there, good girl" as he was sworn in as the MP for Torbay on Wednesday.

Her X account (@rthonjennie) was only set up on Wednesday, but already has nearly 16,000 followers.

Just hours before the Trump shooting, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle declared that his biggest concern is the safety of MPs and their staff.

"Security is the thing that keeps me awake at night," he told The Daily Telegraph, before insisting measures are already being taken "to make people safe".

Sir Lindsay voiced his fears a week after a bruising UK general election campaign and only days before Westminster's biggest security operation swings into action for the State Opening of Parliament.

The election campaign saw several politicians tell of intimidation, prompting ex-MP Harriet Harman to claim it was the worst she'd seen in 40 years and to call on Sir Lindsay to hold a special summit on MPs' safety.

In Pennsylvania, not even the US Secret Service's finest could prevent a young man taking a shot at the heavily guarded former president and now Republican candidate for the White House.

Here in the UK, our most senior politicians - the prime minister and cabinet ministers such as the foreign, defence and home secretaries - have round-the-clock close protection.

But backbenchers and less prominent politicians do not.

The new Labour government will unveil more than 35 bills during the first King's Speech of its tenure, Downing Street has said.

Trailing the significant moment on Wednesday, which will see the King announce the party's plans for power in a ceremony full of pomp, ministers promised to focus on economic growth and to ensure its legislation supported their mission to "rebuild Britain".

The raft of bills will include promises on housebuilding, improving transport, increasing jobs and securing clean energy - reflecting Sir Keir Starmer's "first steps" for government that he campaigned on during the general election.

Number 10 also confirmed a new bill to enforce tough new spending rules, "designed to ensure economic growth, while avoiding the chaos which left families with spiralling bills and wreaked misery on people's lives", by strengthening the role of the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR).

And there will be legislation to "empower regions to deliver change for their communities", with a promise to "hand the power back to local leaders who know what is best for their areas".

Reports have also suggested reform of the House of Lords will be included that could see peers forced to retire aged 80, alongside a roadmap for getting rid of hereditary peers.

Part of the work will be to improve the state of the amateur clubs, and transfer ownership of the team's pitches to the clubs and away from local authorities.

Sir Keir Starmer also wants to expand access to sport in schools, with a curriculum review in the works, and also wants to limit the number of branded pieces of uniform and PE kit schools can require to cut costs for parents.

Rough day of travel all the way around. Wrong info given to us multiple times and mistakes in their booking making our trip 10 hours longer than planned. My seat was changed at the last minute and I was moved to the last row, right next to the bathroom despite selecting my seat well in advance. I arrived 59 minutes before the flight in Tampa due to Massive traffic jam and the flight was closed and I was told that I’d simply have to “book a new ticket on line myself and the gate agents couldn’t help me”. Even though the flight was delayed over 30 minutes, (leaving one hour and 29 minutes before departure, they refused to assist in any way explaining that it’s automatic and there can be no exceptions. Horrible experience due to poor management at gate. I fly this option 2-3 times a year and have a good experience with the cabin crew etc. But, Tampa agents are not trained or allowed customer service. I once was a gate agent for USAir, I know times have changed, but forcing me to purchase a new ticket and complete indifference and inconvenience. No thanks

My morning PHX to NY flight was canceled. Not a cloud in the sky. No wind. No weather across the country. My guess is they canceled the flight because they didn’t have enough people or a mechanical issue. Either way really bad. I checked it at midnight and the 830a flight was on time so I was very surprised when I woke up to see the flight canceled and I’ve been rebooked on a flight… An hour earlier than my originally scheduled one. No offer of a free drink, maybe a few points on my advantage account nothing… As if nothing happened and they did not inconvenienced me at all. I’m so sick of the dumb crackers that they give us on these flights. It’s really like a budget Airlines these days. A far fall for s once mighty company.

I got food poisoning - lasted 4 days after starting medications - someone should check with food delivery.

I like the speed of boarding and deplaning and the fact that everything was on time. The crew (attendants) were probably quite new and did not begin the in cabin service until 30 min before landing even though there was little to no air turbulence for the last 1.5 hours of the flight. It made for a mad scramble at the end to get trash collected and carts stowed before touch down.

Our 9:10 am scheduled flight continued to get delayed all day with no information given from the agents as to why. It wasn’t until I went to the customer service desk and got us switched to another flight at 2:44 pm (that wasn’t nonstop like our booked flight) that the agent finally was able to find out it was due to a fuel leak. I don’t know if our original flight ever took off but I don’t find it acceptable to leave people sitting in an airport all day with no explanation.

I was not given the option to get on a different flight even though I was going to miss my connection due to weather delays (I did). When I called early in the morning, they said it wasn't delayed long enough; though I knew it would be by the time it was time for the flight ... it was and by that time it was too late. I wasn't given the option to pre-board with my toddler, and the food service was less than normal due to delays .... at least that's what the crew said.

They were not helpful in letting my baby and I rebook a flight early in the day when it was clear we were going to miss my connection (we did). The seats are much smaller than I remember. Very bad flights I lost my luggage for both sides

This time it was not good. The plane was not clean. It had a bad smell as if the cabin was not cleaned properly. The small sit pillows were dirty and blankets (even though they were packaged) did mot smell clean. Decaf coffee was disgusting and tasted like instant coffee.

After a bad experience of traveling with United airlines long time ago I decided to give them a second chance. And again it was bad. The flight from Jacksonville to Washington was almost 4 hours delayed. Due to that my flights to Munich and Warsaw had to be rescheduled. As a result I had to travel through Frankfurt. And my checked in luggage did not arrive from Frankfurt to Warsaw with me. Warsaw was not my final destination and I had to figure out a way to deliver my luggage to my destination. On top of everything my Delsey luggage got 2 cracks. Is anybody going to be responsible for that???

The leg room on the plane was the smallest I have encountered in all my travels. Ił only 5’4

We got our seats and was surprised at the half empty plane, so had a very good hostess and we enjoyed the whole flight back home, so the only thing we had to wait for was the passenger assistance that was not there and had to wait about 20 mins on the jetway.

The only issue I had with the flight is that dinner took a long time to come even regardless of the turbulence we experienced. The flight attendants kept disappearing while serving people and kept some people waiting. Which caused them to forget to serve me some tea. It was resolved eventually. Just a small complaint. Maybe there's other reasons but overall the flight wasn't bad.

Every flight was late in arrival, last was late in departure and late in arrival, then lost our luggage!

The flight, food and entertainment we all decent, except for a mishap when an attendant accidentally dropped a hot breakfast plate on my son who was fast asleep two hours before landing in London. She was very apologetic, and offered to help pay for any dry cleaning, but we have not received anything from BA. What could have been better, however, was the lack of any support upon landing to make a connection. The original flight from LAX to London had been delayed, so our time between flights had been cut to only an hour. There was no staff helping direct us where to go to get through security. When we approached anyone to ask for help, they acted bothered. I was traveling with four children that needed to use the restroom and get cleaned up after the spill, so we had to stop briefly for that, but again the gate notices directing us where to go only said to get to concourse A, there was no gate assignment. It was a busy time at security, and the process was slow, but we still arrived at the gate 10 minutes before the scheduled departure only to be told the gate had closed. We came to find out that our connection to Paris had actually taken off 5 minutes early, but without us, and six of its passengers. British Airways had to be aware of our delay and known that we had made it to security, but did not make any effort to ensure their passengers could make a tight connection through a crowded airport. Rebooking a flight for 8 hours later was not a pleasant experience and when we finally arrived in Paris at 1:00am, we arrived with only two of our six bags. Again the original flight was okay, but the support on the ground was greatly lacking.
