Making International Motorcycle Trips Easy

Motorcycle travel insurance: why you need it for your next adventure.

Motorcycle travel can be an exhilarating experience, but it also comes with its own set of risks. From unexpected accidents to lost luggage, there are many things that could go wrong on a motorcycle trip. That's where motorcycle travel insurance comes in.

Motorcycle travel insurance is designed to protect you and your bike while you're on the road. It can cover a wide range of situations, including medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost or stolen gear, and more. With the right coverage, you can travel with peace of mind, knowing that you're protected in case anything goes wrong.

However, not all motorcycle travel insurance policies are created equal. It's important to carefully review the coverage options and exclusions to ensure that you're getting the protection you need.

Why You Need Motorcycle Travel Insurance

Coverage benefits.

Traveling on a motorcycle can be an exciting and adventurous way to explore new places. However, it also comes with its own set of risks. Motorcycle travel insurance can provide coverage for a variety of benefits, including:

  • Emergency medical expenses
  • Cancellation or interruption of your trip
  • Lost or stolen luggage and personal belongings
  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation
  • Accidental death and dismemberment

Having these benefits can give you peace of mind while traveling, knowing that you are protected in case of unexpected events.

Common Risks

Motorcycle travel can be riskier than other forms of travel. Some common risks that motorcycle travelers face include:

  • Accidents and injuries
  • Illness or medical emergencies
  • Theft or loss of personal belongings
  • Weather-related incidents
  • Unforeseen trip cancellations or interruptions

Having motorcycle travel insurance can help mitigate these risks and provide protection in the event that something goes wrong during your trip.

Cost Comparison

The cost of motorcycle travel insurance can vary depending on a variety of factors, such as your age, destination, length of trip, and coverage options. However, it is important to compare the cost of insurance to the potential cost of not having it. For example, if you were to get injured or have to cancel your trip, the cost of medical expenses or lost deposits could far exceed the cost of insurance.

Comparing different insurance policies and providers can help you find the best coverage at a reasonable price. It is also important to read the fine print and understand exactly what is covered and what is not.

Types of Motorcycle Travel Insurance

Single trip insurance.

Single trip insurance is a great option for those who are planning on taking a one-time trip on their motorcycle. This type of insurance provides coverage for a specific trip, typically ranging from a few days to a few weeks. If you are planning a longer trip, you may want to consider annual insurance instead. Single trip insurance typically includes coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation, and emergency assistance while on your trip.

Annual Insurance

Annual insurance is a good choice for those who plan to take multiple trips throughout the year. With annual insurance, you can take as many trips as you like within a 12-month period, with each trip typically lasting up to 90 days. This type of insurance provides coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation, and emergency assistance, just like single trip insurance. It may also include coverage for personal belongings and rental vehicle excess.

Group Insurance

If you are planning a group motorcycle trip, you may want to consider group insurance. This type of insurance provides coverage for a group of people traveling together, typically up to 10 people. Group insurance can be customized to fit the specific needs of your group, and may include coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation, and emergency assistance. It may also include coverage for personal belongings and rental vehicle excess.

How to Choose the Right Motorcycle Travel Insurance

Coverage limitations.

When choosing motorcycle travel insurance, it's important to consider the coverage limitations. Make sure the policy covers the countries you plan to visit and the activities you plan to do, such as off-road riding or racing. Additionally, check the policy's medical coverage, including emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. Look for a policy that covers the full cost of medical treatment, including hospitalization, doctor visits, and medication.

Exclusions are situations or circumstances that the policy does not cover. It's important to carefully read the policy's exclusions section to understand what is not covered. Common exclusions for motorcycle travel insurance include pre-existing medical conditions, reckless behavior, and participating in illegal activities. Additionally, some policies may exclude coverage for certain types of motorcycles or riding in certain areas.

Policy Inclusions

Policy inclusions are the benefits and features that are included in the policy. Look for a policy that includes coverage for trip cancellation or interruption, lost or stolen luggage, and trip delay. Additionally, consider policies that offer roadside assistance, rental vehicle coverage, and personal liability coverage. Make sure to read the policy's terms and conditions carefully to fully understand what is included. When choosing the right motorcycle travel insurance, it's important to consider your individual needs and circumstances. Carefully review the policy's coverage limitations, exclusions, and inclusions to ensure that you have the right coverage for your trip.

Motorcycle Insurance For International Travel

Tom Roderick

If you’re desiring to roll some serious mileage on two wheels but the roadways leading to all the familiar haunts (Sturgis, Daytona, Laguna Seca, et al.) are seeming somewhat lackluster, the cure may be to ride outside your national comfort zone and travel abroad. A foreign escapade brings with it a litany of uncertainties, one being insurance and how to make sure you’re covered in the worst-case scenario, a long way from home in a place where English isn’t the ubiquitous language.

The easiest route for Americans is to simply pack up your bike and head north, eh. As similar as it may be, Canada is a foreign country, and for anyone wanting a trial run to familiarize oneself with passports, border crossings, metric road signs, currency exchange and the looming thrill of getting lost, Canada provides a relatively safe environment in which to experiment. And, to simplify the matter even further, most insurance policies cover you and your bike while in Canada. But don’t just assume, place a quick call to your insurance provider to first confirm you’re covered before riding out.

motorcycle insurance for international travel, As part of Harley Davidson s global 110th anniversary celebration over 5000 motorcyclists descended upon Mexico City to join in the festive occasion making this Mexico City s largest motorcycle parade in history

Although a part of the North American continent, traveling south to Mexico will provide a greater level of unfamiliarity than a Canadian experience. Not only are roadsigns metric, they’re written in Spanish and the deeper south you ride the less spoken English you’ll hear. You’ll certainly want to establish the terms of your insurance policy and examine purchasing additional coverage prior to crossing the border.

When traveling, also consider purchasing international medical insurance, which can provide coverage for emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation while traveling outside your home country. Emergency medical evacuations will get you out of a remote area and transported to a place where you can receive proper medical care, while repatriation coverage ensures your body will be properly transported home or to a nearby funeral home.

motorcycle insurance for international travel, It can happen anywhere anytime Best to be prepared

Travel medical insurance generally provides for:

  • Reimbursement for unexpected medical and dental costs
  • Help obtaining emergency medical transportation when you are injured
  • Payment for emergency medical evacuation services, including medical care
  • Emergency travel assistance to help you locate a local medical facility
  • Accidental death and dismemberment to help take care of your family if you are seriously injured or killed while traveling

If you plan on taking an overseas trip, the expense of such an endeavor requires you to consider trip-cancellation insurance. Trip cancellation (and trip interruption) insurance provides reimbursement of prepaid nonrefundable costs in the case of a cancellation or interruption due to a covered reason. With trip cancellation insurance, an unexpected occurrence such as illness, a visa or passport delay, business conflict, etc., will not cause you to forfeit a large sum of money.

When traveling to a country with an unrideable ocean in between, a motorcyclist must consider whether to ship his own bike or rent a motorcycle upon arrival. Another consideration is touring solo or purchasing a spot in a tour group such as Edelweiss .

motorcycle insurance for international travel, Europe is much more motorcycle aware and biker friendly than the U S English is widely spoken but not as much in rural areas Not to worry motorcycling is a universal language

If you plan to ship your own bike, the same advice above applies: check with your insurance provider to understand your current coverage and whether or not you need to purchase special international insurance, travel medical insurance, and trip cancellation insurance. If you’re traveling with a tour group and using one of their motorcycles, insurance for the bike is usually provided by way of your deposit. Traveling with a tour company also helps lessen the pressure and anxiety of touring in a foreign country with different laws, languages, procedures, money – they may even have you riding on the wrong side of the road.

Lastly, consider purchasing either a temporary international plan for your cell phone or a prepaid, disposable phone when you arrive. It also never hurts to have a good motorcycle GPS. Safe travels!

Motorcycling travel insurance

Just because you’re going abroad to be a rebel without a cause doesn’t mean you need to be a rebel without appropriate travel insurance cover.

We cover over 50 activities and sports, including motorcycling and even bungee jumping, on our standard insurance policies, so you can get on with enjoying your holiday. We can also provide cover for more extreme sports – just add hazardous activities when you’re buying your policy.

What motorcycles and activities does it cover?

Our travel insurance covers up to and including motorcycles with 125cc engines (not including racing). Not fast enough for you? No problem! Bigger bikes can be covered by our  adventure and extreme sports cover .

Don’t worry – if you’re planning to spend your entire trip motorcycling, you’ll be covered by our policies.

Are there any exclusions?

Unfortunately, we don’t provide cover for motorcycle racing of any kind, so you may wish to have additional cover from a specialist insurer for that activity. You can find the whole list of inclusions and exclusions in our  policy documents .

Motorcycling abroad safety tips

  • Don’t exceed your limits – It’s very tempting to go for a bike with a super-fast engine but you’ll be surprised by the performance of today’s bikes; especially if you’ve been off them for a while.
  • Head gear – A helmet is always important when motorcycling. Ensure you have one that fits properly and is in good condition to keep you safe.
  • The right clothing – It’s important to wear appropriate clothing when motorcycling. This means avoiding loose clothing and opting for a padded jacket, gloves, trousers and over the ankle trousers. Road-rash doesn’t look sexy on anybody.
  • Get clued up – There are tons of motorcycling courses or training days that can be taken in your spare time. You should also learn as much as you can about your holiday destinations’ road laws.
  • Stay alert – It’s easy to lose concentration whilst motorcycling – especially while abroad and surrounded by stunning views.
  • Bad weather – Be aware of potentially hazardous weather. Icy roads or tarmac you could cook sausages on. Extreme conditions may take you by surprise, so be conscious of having less grip on the road or decreased visibility.
  • Unlimited emergency medical expenses available on Black level policies.
  • Based on 2,050 responses, correct as of 22/01/2024

MOTORCYCLING TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICIES UK

All our motorcycling travel insurance policies will cover you for on-road motorcycling, with no cc restrictions, as long as you hold a FULL licence to be riding a bike of that size in your home country, and wear a crash helmet (even if local law doesn’t insist on it). On-road motorcycling touring does not necessarily have to be a tarmac road, but the road must be what passes for the road locally.

Please note that these policies are NOT to insure your motorcycle and do NOT cover Third Party Liability (Personal Liability). These are Travel Insurance policies for bikers, to cover you whilst travelling by motorcycle abroad and on motorcycle holidays, for medical expenses etc.

They are only available to UK residents, though some Short Stay policies are also available to residents of certain other European countries. Whilst these policies cover Medical Expenses relating to motorcycling (ambulance, air ambulance, hospital costs, repatriation etc) most of these policies, including Navigator Silver, Pearl, Gold & Diamond, do NOT cover additional compensation for accidental Death, Loss of Limb, Loss of Sight, Disablement, arising from a motorcycling-related accident.

WHY DO YOU NEED MOTORCYCLE TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Motorcycle travel insurance is essential for anyone who plans on booking a motorcycle holiday or taking their motorbike touring abroad. This includes anyone who plans on touring on their motorcycle, taking biking road trips, off-road motorbiking, and participating in track days.

Ensuring that you have the right motorcycle travel insurance policy for you will mean that you remain protected no matter where you go for all motorbike-related activities you may be embarking on during your motorcycle holidays.

WHAT DOES TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR MOTORCYCLISTS COVER?

Depending on which motorcycle travel insurance policy you opt for, this will determine what you are and aren’t covered for during your motorcycle holidays. For example, some policies will cover both on-road and off-road motorcycle use in their travel insurance for motorcyclists, whereas some may only cover on-road.

It is worth noting that opting for additional off-road cover might incur additional costs.

You must complete the necessary research into the different available motorcycle travel insurance policies to ensure that you choose a policy that is most suited for you and the travel and activities that you will be engaging in during your motorcycle holidays.

WHEN IS ON-ROAD NOT ON-ROAD? (Navigator Silver, Gold & Diamond policies).

PLEASE NOTE – WE DO NOT ACCEPT THAT “EVENTS” SUCH AS MOTOGIRO DE ITALIA, STELLA ALPINA ETC, ARE ON ROAD, LEISURE MOTORCYCLE TOURING. WE CAN COVER THESE EVENTS, BUT ONLY ON MORE EXPENSIVE MOTORSPORT POLICIES, WHERE INDEPENDENT OFF-ROADING IS COVERED.

SIMILARLY, WE REGRET THAT INSURERS DO NOT REGARD NETWORKS SUCH AS TET (TRANS-EUROP TRAIL NETWORK) AS ON-ROAD MOTORCYCLING, AS THERE ARE NARROW SECTIONS WHERE YOU CANNOT GET A 4×4. UNFORTUNATELY, AS TET TOURING IS NOT GUIDED, TOUR OPERATOR ORGANIZED OFF-ROADING, WE CAN NO LONGER COVER IT UNLESS YOU ARE SURE THAT THE SECTIONS THAT YOU ARE RIDING ARE MARKED ON GENERAL MAPS AND ARE WIDE ENOUGH FOR OTHER TRAFFIC TYPES TO USE (WE WOULD THEN CLASS IT AS ON-ROAD RIDING).

IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE TET/ACT TRAILS THAT YOU WILL BE RIDING, THIS IS NOT A SUITABLE POLICY FOR YOUR TRIP.

We have recently lost our off-roading (Motorcycle Silver and Motorcycle Gold) policies, due to the underwriter pulling out.

We have motorcycle travel insurance policies with another underwriter, the Navigator Silver, Navigator Gold and Navigator Diamond, but these are principally for on-road motorcycling. True Off-Road motorcycling on personally guided organised tours can be covered, but only for a MAXIMUM of 7 days and at the Action Plus sport supplement, which doubles the cost. However, we have been talking to the underwriter and have agreed to relax rules relating to what constitutes on-road motorcycling. We now regard on-road motorcycling as :

1 – Riding legally on Highways and Byways that are available for motorised vehicles (i.e. green laning etc). They should be substantial enough for a 4WD to negotiate.

2 – They MUST be marked on a map as roads (not footpaths/bridleways, for example)

3 – They MUST be rights of way for motorised vehicles, i.e. NOT restricted byways for walkers, push bikes and horses, and NOT forest fire roads which are not open to unauthorised motorised vehicles.

4 – As a rule of thumb, if you don’t need a licence, motor vehicle tax and insurance to ride on it, we would regard it as off-roading and you would NOT be covered. Highways and byways with legal access for motorised vehicles would require these documents. Strangely, our insurers still require you to hold a FULL licence for the size of bike being used, even when off-road riding (don’t ask!). I suppose it’s the only way they have of knowing that you have some experience on a motorcycle…

5 – Unfortunately, Navigator Silver and Navigator Gold policies are not as generous as the old policies. These will NOT cover motorcycle touring trips of more than 31 consecutive days unless you pay the Action Plus sport supplement which increases this to 62 consecutive days. There is NO cover for the bike or your gear (helmets/leathers and boots etc) and NO cover for Motocross or competitive riding of any sort, and NO cover for Track Days, or true off-roading (other than 7 days guided organised tour at Action Plus supplement), Enduro etc.

Long term on road motorcycling and competitive motorsport can be covered on our new AIG Backpacker & Longstay policies – call 0161 973 6435 or email [email protected] for a quote.

6 – If there is any doubt about the nature of the riding that you may encounter on your trip, we strongly recommend that you pay the Action Plus sport supplement, which extends cover to true off-roading for a maximum of 7 days of the trip, though this travel insurance for motorcyclists is only for organised guided (by a human!) motorcycling tours.

If you buy one of these Single Trip policies online, it is important that you start the cover on the date that you leave the UK (or your home country) and end it on the date that you get home. If you just buy the motorcycle travel insurance policy for a few days in the middle of a trip when you are booked on a motorcycling tour, the policy will be completely INVALID. These are not top-up policies, they must cover the whole trip.

WHICH POLICY DO I NEED?

To minimise confusion, we have detailed the scope of our UK motorcycling cover for your motorcycle holidays on our policies below:

Navigator Silver, Gold & Diamond. ( Quote or buy online or by phone – 0161 973 6435)

Cover for On Road Motorcycle Touring is restricted to 31 consecutive days per trip, with the option to increase to 62 days at the Action Plus supplement. This applies to Annual Multi-Trip and Short Stay Single Trip versions of these policies. The Long Stay Single Trip version of the policy is restricted to 31 consecutive days, with no option to increase this limit.

Cover for Off-Road Motorcycling (as part of a personally guided organised motorcycling tour) is restricted to 7 consecutive days with the Action Plus supplement, at extra cost. Again, this only applies to Annual Multi-Trip or Short Stay Single Trip policies and is not available on the Long Stay Single Trip version for your motorcycle holidays (see definition of on-road/off-road above).

If you buy one of these Single Trip policies online, it is important that you start the cover on the date that you leave the UK (or your home country) and end it on the date that you get home from your motorcycle holidays. If you just buy the motorcycle travel insurance policy for a few days in the middle of a trip when you are booked on a motorcycling tour, the policy will be completely INVALID. These are not top-up policies, they must cover the whole trip.

Longstay & Backpacker  ( Quote or buy by phone only – 0161 973 6435)

On Road motorcycling can be covered for trips of up to 18 months with NO cc restrictions. Limited off-road cover available with 250cc maximum. Motocross and other competitive riding can be covered at extra cost.

High-Risk Voyager. ( Quote or buy online or by phone – 0161 973 6435)

On Road Motorcycling is only covered for a maximum of 14 consecutive days per trip. This motorcycle travel insurance policy is primarily for people working overseas and is not really intended for touring holidays.

Travel Plus. ( Quote or buy by phone only – 0161 973 6435)

This policy is NOT suitable for motorcycling as there is now a limit of 250cc.   On road motorcycling on made-up public roads is covered, though ONLY up to the 250cc limit. Full licence must be held

Adventures. ( Quote or buy by phone only – 0161 973 6435)

On Road Motorcycling is covered for 6 months maximum with this motorcycle travel insurance policy. This insurer does NOT use the above definition of “on-road”. They do not require roads to be tarmac, but they must be official public highways, passable to most traffic types.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are there any cc restrictions on navigator policies.

There are no cc restrictions on any of our motorcycle travel insurance policies as long as you hold a full licence to ride a similar-sized bike in the UK (or EU on some policies).

Am I covered for Third Party/Personal Liability?

Motorcycle travel insurance excludes liability cover if the claim arises from using any motorised vehicle. This must be covered on the vehicle/motorcycle insurance.

Do Navigator policies cover me on a rented motorcycle?

Yes, Navigator policies will cover you on owned, rented or borrowed bikes, as long as you have an appropriate full licence and are street legal.

Can I ride off-road on Navigator policies?

Our motorcycle holiday insurance policies cover on-road at standard prices, though roads do not have to be tarmac. If they are official highways, marked as such on a map, or are byways legally open to motorised vehicles and marked as such on a map, this would be classed as on road. Proper Off-Road riding on a guided off-road motorcycling tour can be covered on our Navigator Silver, Gold and Diamond policies for a maximum of 7 days, by selecting the “Action Plus” option on the second page of the online application. This doubles the cost. Strangely, our insurers still require you to hold a FULL licence for the size of bike being used, even when off-road riding (don’t ask!). Touring Travel and Repatriation Insurance

There are few pleasures greater than touring overseas on a motorcycle, with your panniers bursting at the seams and a twisty mountain route programmed into the sat nav.

There's a hell of a lot of preparation to do before you set off for the chunnel or ferry terminal, however at the very top of your list should be motorcycle holiday insurance - touring travel and repatriation insurance that specifically caters for riding motorcycles over 125cc (a common exclusion on 'normal' travel insurance policies).

Not only should it be your top priority, it should be the first thing you purchase after booking your channel crossing tickets(or flights if you’re going further afield)... Why?

Because it doesn't just protect you from the costs of emergency medical and repatriation, it can also reimburse you for some of your costs if the trip gets cancelled, i.e. something unplanned happens before you set off that prevents you travelling. So remember the words of Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert... "As soon as you book" (ASAB)!

Motorcycle Touring Insurance can cover you for:

  • Up to £3,000 cancellation cover (specific reasons only)
  • Up to £10,000,000 of Emergency Medical Costs (reduces to £250k for trackdays)
  • Up to £100,000 of Emergency Repatriation Costs
  • Up to £1,000 if the only qualified or competent rider is taken ill, or is unfit or unable to ride (or if you cannot use your motorcycle for more than 8 hours)
  • A contribution towards damaged bike clothing your motorbike riding gear if it is lost, stolen or damaged in an accident

It's important to fully understand the cover you’re getting and go through the medical screening questions if you have pre-existing health conditions. If you don't declare your previous medical history, it could leave you in trouble with costs that aren’t covered if you get sick.

Quotes and Sales Line: Open 8:30am-6pm Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4pm Saturday

You can buy Touring Travel Insurance online 24 hours a day by clicking the button below. Motorcycle touring is covered as standard (even if you’re going off-road Charlie Boorman style), there are also options for trackdays and motocross if you plan on something more extreme.

Remember to complete the medical screening questions honestly and accurately to ensure your policy covers you for any pre-existing medical conditions.

More Information About Repatriation Insurance

  • Emergency repatriation is covered up to £100,000

  • You can buy Single Trip or Annual Multi Trip cover (the maximum age for Multi Trip is 66 whereas Single Trip is a maximum age of 75)

Motorbike Touring Travel Insurance FAQs

Do BeMoto do travel insurance?

Yes, BeMoto offers travel insurance for bikers who want to tour in Europe, take part on overseas trackdays or off-road riding (whether that's Enduro, Motocross or cross-country adventure riding).

Most normal travel insurance policies exclude cover for riding large capacity motorbikes overseas, in other words they'll cover you for riding a 50cc moped or 125cc scooter but nothing more, so if you decide last minute to jump on a quad tour or hire a cruiser for the day you may not be covered for emergency medical and repatriation costs unless you buy specialist cover like ours.

BeMoto Travel and Repatriation Insurance (often known as "Repat") is also widely used for Euro trackdays and dirt bike holidays, including amateur racing events if you choose the additional options/packages on our policy - no cover is available for professional racing overseas.

Is it BeMoto who deal with the Travel Insurance and Repatriation claims?

No. BeMoto does not handle travel claims. The insurer has appointed CEGA Assistance to handle claims, including 24/7 emergency medical assistance and non-emergency claims. It is important to call CEGA Assistance on the number in the table above as soon as possible if any medical expenses are likely to exceed £500 or if you are admitted to hospital.

We can’t risk being a middleman delaying the process of getting you vital emergency treatment and we certainly don’t have specialist medical claims handlers, relationships with hospitals and medical experts or a team of foreign language speakers...

You, or someone in your party, should always call the CEGA 24 hour emergency assistance team on +44 (0) 1243 621 501 as soon as possible to get the insurer involved to ensure (a) you are taken to the most appropriate public/state medical facility and (b) it’s better if they agree treatment with the hospital in advance, where practical or possible, to avoid you committing to things they won’t agree to pay for.

For non-emergencies the CEGA general claims number is +44 (0) 345 258 7172 . Open Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm (closed at the weekends).

Clearly if you’re unconscious or in no fit state to make phone calls then that may mean calling them later, at the earliest possible opportunity. If you wind up in a private hospital through no fault of your own, the insurer reserves the right to move you to a public/state hospital at an appropriate time (being careful not to risk your recovery).

NEVER provide your payment card details to a hospital or clinic.

What's the difference between a "Repat" policy and my GHIC card?

EEA member states are obliged to treat UK citizens showing a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), however in some cases (for example hazardous sports injuries) EHIC/GHIC is sometimes rejected by the hospital – rightly or wrongly - or it may only cover part of the costs. That’s why travel and repatriation insurance is required for overseas trackdays and off-road riding, even at public hospitals the bills can quickly rack up.

Significantly neither does the EHIC or GHIC get you repatriated home (where medically necessary and safe to do so) or where necessary repatriate one other person who is required for medical reasons to stay with you.

Remember repatriation can be very costly, for example if you can't safely travel in a normal plane seat, or the airline won't accept the risk of travelling without medical supervision for the journey. BeMoto Emergency repatriation cover is on top of the medical limits (£100k limit alive, or £50k in a body bag).

In some cases insurers have paid for relatives to fly out, including accommodation, to support customers when stranded overseas whilst receiving treatment. Again an EHIC or GHIC card won't provide this kind of support when needed.

Find out more about the GHIC here (please note residents of the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands are not eligible): Travelling Outside the EEA (NHS page)

Note: Make sure you answer all medical questions honestly and accurately when buying any travel insurance policy. Pre-Existing conditions will always be excluded unless declared and accepted by the insurer (sometimes for additional premium). Ensure you buy the cover whilst still in the UK, before you leave, and it must cover the whole duration of your trip.

Does Repatriation Insurance cover private hospital treatment?

BeMoto Repatriation Insurance is a travel insurance policy (not private medical insurance). It's intended to cover emergency medical and repatriation costs, and much like with the NHS, you'd be expected to go to the local emergency department, if medically capable public facilities are available.

However, the insurers do understand that if you have an accident, e.g. whilst participating in a track or off-road event, you will be taken to the nearest appropriate medical facility, which could be public or private for initial treatment and assessment.

If you are admitted to a private facility, c all the Emergency Assistance Helpline as soon as possible and the insurers assistance team will advise what options are best for you.

Never give a private hospital your payment information, and don't agree to any costs without prior authorisation from the insurer. Once the insurer has agreed to treatment, they will deal with any requests for payment from any private facility, so you should resist any request from them to make payment.

What's the issue with private hospitals?

Travel insurance policies generally exclude medical treatment in private facilities (unless absolutely necessary and pre-authorised).

Just like in the UK, private hospitals may not be equipped to deal with accident and emergency admissions, or have the range of staff needed to provide such treatment, investigation and care.

As businesses, private hospitals also exist to make profit and are often unregulated with less frequent inspections compared to public/state facilities. This means that private hospitals have been known to over-treat, delay treatment or discharge, over-inflate costs and allegedly have been known to claim for treatment that never actually happened (ever wondered why you need multiple scans or had to stay longer than necessary?).

Be aware that some hospitals provide private ambulances or encourage taxi's to ensure you end up in their clinics, which if you're not careful can lead to you being trapped in their care with large bills to pay.

However, we appreciate that some countries, even within the EEA, do not offer the same high standard of care we are used to with the NHS, plus the language barrier can be daunting when you're on your own in a foreign hospital. Research the local facilities in advance and make sure you call the emergency assistance team at the very earliest opportunity.

What is Travel Insurance and What Does it Cover?

While going on holiday should be a fun and enjoyable experience, sometimes the unexpected can unfortunately happen. Voyager Plus Travel Insurance is designed to give you financial peace of mind that you are covered should something unexpected happen, so you are not left out of pocket, in the event of a valid claim.

Travel Insurance Benefits

The following summary of Travel Insurance benefits are just some of the areas of cover included as standard across all levels of cover on our Voyager Plus Travel Insurance policy. Please read the policy wording here for the full cover available under the policy.

Cancellation or Curtailment

A Cancellation is where you are unable to start your trip, due to an insured reason. A Curtailment is where you have to end your trip earlier than expected, due to an insured reason.

This section provides cover for any unused and non-refundable travel and accommodation costs (including unused pre-booked excursions and course fees) that have been paid, or where there is a contract to pay, if it is necessary to cancel or curtail the planned trip because of any of the events specified in the policy wording .

Emergency Medical Expenses

Medical treatment in other countries can be very expensive. This section covers the cost of emergency medical treatment, outside your home country if you’re injured or suffer unexpected illness including with symptoms of or testing positive for COVID-19 during your trip, in line with the policy terms, conditions and exclusions. Cover also includes the cost of repatriation back to your home country if medically necessary.

Please Note : If you have pre-existing medical conditions and would like cover in case you need emergency medical treatment related to them, you will need to complete a medical screening to see if cover is available and pay the appropriate additional premium.

Covers the loss, theft or damage to your baggage, meaning: personal belongings, including clothing worn, and personal luggage owned or borrowed by you that you take with you on your trip, as well as your valuables as defined in the policy wording .

Please Note : Your gadgets may not fall under the Baggage definition in the policy wording and you may need to also purchase the gadget cover Option to cover them.

Personal Accident

In the event of a serious accident from which you suffer life changing injuries during your trip the policy will provide cover in the event of your death or permanent disablement because of the accident. Please refer to the policy wording for full details on this area of cover.

Please Note : Any immediate injuries you suffer from such an incident would be dealt with under the Emergency Medical Expenses section.

Travel Delay

No one likes to be delayed when travelling!

So with Voyager Plus Travel Insurance cover is available if the public transport (meaning any aeroplane, ship, train or coach) that you are booked to travel on is delayed by at least 12 hours. If your departure from your home country is delayed for more than 12 hours and you choose to abandon your trip, instead of a payment for delay, you are covered for the cost of the trip under the Cancellation or Curtailment section of cover.

Missed Departure / Journey Disruption

Cover for additional travel and accommodation expenses in the event you miss the departure of your public transport for your trip, due to a specified reason as defined in the policy wording .

This section also covers, in the event of a Catastrophe (as defined in the policy wording ), if you are forced to move from your pre-booked accommodation to allow you to continue your trip.

These are a few of the reasons why getting travel insurance is a good idea before you travel so that you are not left out of pocket should the unexpected happen. Furthermore, Voyager Plus Travel Insurance has a wide range of features and benefits, which are just not available on cheaper products, see the policy wording for full details.

Motorcycle Travel Insurance Cover

Motorcycles riding in Alpine highway in Austria

Add motorcycle and moped cover to your travel insurance policy

Every year, many Australians choose motorbikes or mopeds to explore popular destinations like Thailand and Bali. It can be an incredible way to experience a new country, and it is often the quickest and most efficient way to get around.

However, riding a motorcycle or moped can also be a risky activity. When you’re abroad, road rules are different, traffic can be chaotic, and the bike you’re riding may be different to the one you’re used to at home. All these elements can contribute to an accident. And – even if you’re a seasoned rider – coming off a bike can result in costly medical bills and bad memories.

Like wearing a helmet or sticking to the speed limit, taking the necessary precautions is the best way to minimise your risk. We may not be able to stop an actual accident occurring, but we can be there if one happens via 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.

If you’re ready to protect your motorbike or moped trip with our additional cover, you can get a quote online now. Or, if you want to know more about motorcycle travel insurance cover, keep reading.

Moped and motorbike travel insurance cover helps protect riders from accidents and injuries that may occur while they’re riding a motorcycle or moped on a trip.

Because of the known risks of riding a motorbike or moped, it’s rare to find travel insurance with motorcycle cover included automatically.

To be covered for motor biking incidents while travelling, riders will often need to purchase motorcycle travel insurance cover as part of their chosen travel insurance plan for an additional premium.

If you’re planning to ride a motorcycle or moped on your travels, you need to carefully consider your travel insurance policy and make sure you’ve got cover in case of an accident.

Accidents and mishaps can be very costly and stressful to deal with. Having the right motorcycle travel insurance can help cover medical costs if you end up injured, or if your bike gets stolen.

Yes, we do. If your idea of a good time is hopping on a motorbike or moped to explore a new country, you may be interested in our Motorcycle/Moped Riding Cover. This additional protection can be added to your Cover-More travel insurance policy for an additional premium.

We offer two levels of cover:

  • Motorcycle/Moped Riding Cover*: for engine capacity 250cc or less
  • Motorcycle/Moped Riding+ Cover*: engine capacity unlimited (conditions apply)

Our Motorcycle/Moped Riding Cover can protect you if you plan on riding or being a passenger on a motorbike or moped while on your trip.

Make sure you read the Product Disclosure Statement before purchasing, so you are aware of the conditions of coverage.

We want you to have a wonderful holiday – and if you choose to ride a motorcycle or moped, we want you to be safe, too.

Even if you pay the extra premium for our base level Motorcycle/Moped Riding Cover to be included in your policy, you will only have cover if:

  • the engine capacity of your motorcycle/moped meets your level of coverage (for Motorcycle/Moped Riding this is 250cc or less; for motorcycles more than 250cc you will need Motorcycle/Moped Riding+ Cover)
  • while in control of a motorcycle or moped, you hold a valid Australian motorcycle rider’s licence or Australian motor vehicle driver’s licence;
  • while you are a passenger the driver holds a valid license for riding that vehicle;
  • you are wearing a helmet;
  • you are not participating in a professional capacity;
  • you are not racing; and
  • you are not participating in motocross.

Additional conditions are required for our increased Motorcycle/Moped Riding+ Cover to apply:

  • the motorcycle/moped is hired;
  • You have held an Australian motorcycle rider’s licence for the last 5 years;
  • while in control of a motorcycle or moped, you hold a valid Australian motorcycle rider’s licence; and
  • You are the registered owner of a motorcycle in Australia that has an engine capacity greater than or equal to the engine capacity of the motorcycle/moped you are hiring

You may wish to compare motorcycle travel insurance benefits in Australia when deciding what coverage is right for your trip, and refer to the PDS for more information about limits, sub-limits, exclusions and conditions of our motorcycle travel insurance as we can’t cover absolutely everything.

To speak to our team about our moped and motorbike travel insurance cover, call us on 1300 72 88 22 during Australian business hours.

When you have paid the additional premium for our Motorcycle/Moped Riding Cover, we will also include cover for the insurance excess should you become liable to pay for the damage to or theft of the motorcycle or moped rented from a licensed motor vehicle company. This is because our rental vehicle insurance excess cover and conditions include motorcycles and mopeds in this circumstance.

For more details, see the rental vehicle insurance excess insurance section of the PDS .

No cover will apply under the Personal Liability section of the PDS even if you’ve included either level of our Motorcycle/Moped Riding Cover in your Cover-More travel insurance policy.

This means you are responsible to pay costs associated with any damage to the motorcycle, moped or property or injury to another person.

How do I buy Cover-More's motorcycle/moped riding cover?

It is great you’re considering adding our Motorcycle/Moped Riding Cover to your policy for your trip.

You can easily buy this motorcycle travel insurance cover online or by calling our team on 1300 72 88 22.

When purchasing travel insurance via our website, fill in your travel details in the quote box and click ‘Get Quote’.

After selecting your chosen plan and excess level (if applicable), you soon be asked if you wish to vary your cover options. This section includes the option of adding our Motorcycle/Moped Cover or

Motorcycle/Moped+ Cover to your policy by selecting “Yes” when prompted.

Your premium price will adjust to reflect the additional cover you choose.

To complete you policy purchase, fill out your personal details, complete our online medical assessment online to declare all your existing medical conditions (whether you want to purchase cover for them all or not), and then pay the premium owed.

As a Cover-More customer, you have access to our Emergency Assistance team 24/7.

We can be there for you at any time during your trip if something goes wrong, including if you’re involved in a motorcycle/moped accident and have our Motorcycle/Moped Cover included in your policy.

If you’re hurt, we can help you find nearby medical facilities to seek treatment, among a range of other services.

If you are travelling overseas, call us immediately on +61 2 8907 5619 if:

  • you are admitted to hospital or if you anticipate your medical expenses will exceed $2,000. This allows us to manage your case and determine the best options for your care.
  • you need help finding an English-speaking doctor while travelling.
  • you need help with lost or stolen passports or travel documents.
  • you need local legal help.

For toll-free numbers in number of countries loved by Australian travellers, visit our Emergency Assistance page.

It’s not uncommon for Aussie travellers to run into trouble when behind the handlebars of a motorcycle or moped – particularly in popular spots like Southeast Asia.

If you’re riding through countries such as Cambodia or Vietnam, you will soon realise how chaotic the roads can be in comparison to back home in Australia. Add in wandering animals, the lack of road rules, and lower standards of vehicle maintenance and you’ve got yourself a challenge.

Because of this, you may want to get protection in case you have an accident. Unfortunately, even a broken arm or a bad graze could cost you money that you’d rather spend on exploring.

You can get a quote online now to find out how much it costs to protect you – and your finances – while you’re travelling.

Am I covered if I ride a motorcycle/moped while under the influence?

Holidays are often a great time to relax and enjoy yourself. But just like you wouldn’t drink and drive at home, you shouldn’t “drink and ride” overseas or ride while you’re under the influence.

Cover will not apply if you are injured in a motorcycle or moped accident arising from being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

If you know you won’t be sober, consider organising a ride back to your accommodation ahead of time, or use a reputable transport provider to get you safely back to your hotel so you can help keep yourself – and others on the road – safe.

Can I choose my level of motorcycle cover with Cover-More travel insurance?

Every trip is different – and every motorbike or moped rider is different – which is why we offer you two level of travel insurance cover to suit your needs.

Our moped and motorbike travel insurance cover can be added to any of our international or domestic plans, as well as our Inbound Plan for non-Australian residents visiting Australia.

You can choose either:

Motorcycle/Moped Cover isn’t the only optional protection we have available. Did you know you can also add our Adventure Activities Cover or Snow Sports Cover to your policy as well? So, if you’re planning a big adventure, we can help you travel with extra peace of mind.

Travel Insurance For Vietnam: Everything You Need To Know

Published: Apr 25, 2024, 12:17am

Table of Contents

Do australians need travel insurance for vietnam, what does travel insurance for vietnam cover, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Vietnam is an increasingly popular travel destination for Australians, with the country even hoping to encourage more Aussies to visit by potentially waiving visa requirements in due time.

The Southeast Asian country is set to be high on the list for Aussies going overseas in 2024. The number of Australian tourists in Vietnam now exceeds pre-pandemic levels: more than 317,000 Australians visited Vietnam in 2019 , while there were 390,000 Aussie visitors in 2023.

Plus, as more and more flights become available, such as low-cost carrier Vietjet Air launching a direct service between Hanoi and Melbourne earlier this year, getting to Vietnam is becoming easier for Australians.

If the direct flights, fascinating history, vast scenery and delicious food aren’t enough to convince Australian travellers, the cost may be. Vietnam is considered one of the cheapest travel destinations in the world for Australian tourists due to our strong conversion rate against the Vietnamese Dong and the nation’s low cost of living in comparison to our own.

And while cheap thrills may be what you’re after on your vacation, it’s important not to skimp on the necessities that may cost that little bit extra—such as travel insurance. This guide outlines what you need to know regarding travel insurance in Vietnam.

Investing in travel insurance is a good idea for any overseas trip. Travel insurance policies can help protect you from having to dive deep into your pockets, with many offering unlimited medical treatment while abroad and cancellation cover for your trip should the unexpected occur.

Travel insurance is not just handy for medical purposes or travel changes, either. Your personal items can be covered, should any baggage go missing or an important item be stolen—which, unfortunately, often occurs in Vietnam.

Smarttraveller warns Australians to be alert at all times in Vietnam, considering petty theft–including bag slashing–is common in tourist areas and crowded places, especially during holiday times. Snatch-and-grab theft by thieves on motorcycles is also common, the website states.

Like most international travel insurance policies, you will be able to find basic coverage for your trip to Vietnam, or choose to opt for a more comprehensive, albeit more expensive, policy.

While a basic policy will often cover medical expenses and lost luggage,a comprehensive policy includes a lot more. Most basic policies also likely won’t offer compensation for travel delays, stolen cash, accidental death and more.

Additionally, if you are going on a trip to multiple countries within the year, it may be worth opting for an ‘annual multi trip’ insurance instead—making sure that there are no exclusions to the regions you are wishing to visit.

Visa Requirements For Australians Travelling to Vietnam

You’ll still be allowed to travel to Vietnam if you don’t invest in travel insurance, but you do so at your own risk—and, as stated, it is highly advised to have a travel insurance policy for any overseas trip.

However, what you cannot do is enter Vietnam as an Australian tourist without a tourist visa. While Vietnam will grant Australian citizens visas on arrival, applying for one online is much easier.

A tourist visa costs under $100 AUD; however the exact price depends on your length of stay.

The Vietnamese government may consider waiving visas for Australian citizens, especially since many other SEA countries have done so such as Indonesia and Thailand .

However, at the time of writing, Forbes Advisor Australia has confirmed that Australian citizens must still obtain a visa to visit Vietnam for tourism purposes.

The exact inclusions of your travel insurance will be dependent on your personal policy and the provider.

However, generally speaking, you can expect a travel insurance policy for Vietnam to offer some level of cover for:

  • Medical expenses;
  • Lost, damaged or stolen luggage;
  • Travel cancellations or delays ;
  • Personal liability;
  • Credit card fraud;
  • Covid-19 expenses;

If you are partaking in certain sports and activities, you will need to make sure that you choose a policy that covers them. You’ll also need to make sure that your policy covers any pre-existing medical conditions as well.

Plus, if you are travelling with valuables, you may wish to opt for a policy that lets you increase the protection cover on your items.

Ultimately, you need to consider what your trip consists of, what you will be taking with you, and your physical health to establish what policies would be appropriate for you.

From there, you can compare quotes of different policies and providers to ensure you have the optimal—yet affordable—cover for your trip to Vietnam.

Does Travel Insurance Cover The Ha-Giang Loop?

Considered one of the most scenic motorcycle routes in the world, the Ha-Giang Loop is a popular tourist activity in Vietnam for adventurous travellers. If the Ha-Giang Loop is one of your goals, you’ll need to make sure you have travel insurance that covers motorcycling.

Occasionally a policy may include this as one of their included ‘sports and activities’, but it is more often the case that you will need to purchase an additional ‘adventure pack’ that is either specific to, or includes, motorsports.

Even so, when purchasing an additional pack to cover motorbikes, you need to be cautious of the conditions. For example, some policies will only cover motorcycle riding if the bike you are riding has an engine under a certain size.

Often, coverage will cease and claims won’t be accepted if you haven’t been wearing the correct safety equipment such as boots and a helmet, or have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

What Does Travel Insurance Exclude?

Your travel insurance policy may exclude some activities that you wish to partake in, unless you can opt-in to purchase an additional adventure pack as explained above in regards to motorbike riding.

Just like with the inclusions of a policy, the exclusions depend on what type of policy you choose, and what provider you go with.

Commonly, however, you won’t be covered for instances where you:

  • Break the law;
  • Are under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  • Partake in an excluded activity;
  • Receive medical treatment for a pre-existing condition that was not disclosed;
  • Travel to a ‘Do Not Travel’ destination as outlined by Smarttraveller.

As always, it is essential to read the product disclosure statement (PDS) of your travel insurance policy carefully to understand what you will and won’t be covered for while overseas.

Do I need a visa to travel to Vietnam?

Yes, as of April 2024, Australian tourists still need a visa to travel to Vietnam. This visa can be obtained on arrival, or purchased online prior to travel. The visa takes approximately three days to process online, and the cost depends on how long you intend to stay in the country.

Does international travel insurance cover Covid-19?

Many comprehensive travel insurance policies now cover Covid-19, including medical conditions related to Covid-19 or trip cancellations due to a Covid-19 diagnosis. However, it is not guaranteed that all policies will. It’s important to check your policy’s PDS carefully to understand what it will and will not cover in regards to Covid-19 for both you and your travelling companions.

How much does travel insurance cost for Vietnam?

The cost of your travel insurance for a trip to Vietnam will depend on your age, your health, the activities you wish to partake in, and the length of your stay.

For example, for a 34 year old with no pre-existing medical conditions travelling to Vietnam for two weeks, a policy from some of our top choices for comprehensive travel insurance would cost around $130 (based on quotes from Cover-More , 1Cover , and Fast Cover ).

The prices of these quotes would change depending on a chosen excess, cancellation cover, and any additional coverage options you may choose to purchase such as adventure packs or cruise cover.

  • Travel insurance is intended to cover risks and financial losses associated with traveling.
  • Coverage can include trip cancellation, baggage protection, medical care, and emergency evacuation.
  • When filing a claim, be specific and comprehensive in your documentation to ease the process.

Whether it's a trip across the world or a trip across the state, having travel insurance provides major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Overview of Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

What does travel insurance cover?

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellation and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

What does credit card travel insurance cover?

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex , for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

What travel insurance coverage do you need to pay more for?

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back.

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Choosing the right travel insurance

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

Most travel insurance plans are simple, and Business Insider's guide to the best travel insurance companies outlines our top picks. Remember, read your policy and its specifics closely to ensure it includes the items you need coverage for.

No one likes to dwell on how a trip might not go as planned before even leaving. However, at its core, travel insurance provides peace of mind as you go about your trip. While the upfront cost may seem significant, when you compare it to the potential expenses of a canceled flight, emergency evacuation, or a hefty medical bill, it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.
