Getting There

Entry requirements.

All travelers between the U.S. and Mexico are required to carry passports beginning January 1, 2007 as mandated by the United States Department of Homeland Security and the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. We encourage you to begin the passport application process early to avoid unexpected delays. Travelers should allow a minimum of six weeks between their application submission and receipt of passport. Passports can be expedited for an additional fee.  Visas are not required for US passport holders.

Foreign residents of the United States and all other foreign visitors not holding a US Passport must contact the appropriate government authorities to determine the entry and visa requirements.  Please consult travel.state.gov for the latest travel requirements.

Vaccinations

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends vaccinations for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and Typhoid fever. For extended stays in particular regions of Mexico, vaccinations for Malaria and Rabies may also be necessary.  Please consult www.cdc.gov for the latest health information.

Departure Tax

A departure tax is required before returning to the United States. Though often included in the price of your airline ticket, check with your travel representative for confirmation.

What to Wear

Light shirts and shorts are best suited to the generally tropical climate in Mexico. Other regions may get cooler and require jackets and long pants. Check the climate of your particular region before packing. Resort restaurants typically require a collared shirt and long pants for men and resort evening wear for ladies at dinner.

Dollars are readily exchangeable for pesos at the many banks within Mexico’s developed regions. Traveler’s checks and major credit cards are also accepted by most hotels, shops and restaurants.

U.S. citizens arriving by air or sea are limited to an import value of $300 per person. Those arriving by land are limited to $50 per person. Travel-related items may be brought in duty-free while any amount exceeding the duty-free limit is subject to a 32.8% tax.

To avoid an import tax on personal computers or other expensive electronic equipment, write a statement about its intended use and removal from Mexico upon your return. A Mexican consulate in the United States must sign it before you present it to customs in Mexico.

Guns and ammunition cannot be brought into Mexico without a permit from a Mexican Consulate in the United States.

Electricity

Hotels in Mexico follow the U.S. standard of 110 volts of AC currency.

Purified water runs through most of the hotels and Cancun is home to the largest water purification system in Mexico. Bottled water is provided at most all-inclusives and is the best option when drinking water is needed. Drinking the public water outside of resort property is not recommended. Bottled water is available and will easily suffice. Puerto Vallarata and Cabo San Lucas hotels and restaurants have purified water and bottled water is available in tourist areas. It is recommended to drink bottled water in these areas.

The Cancún International Airport is just 5 miles south of the city center: two hours by air from Mexico City and one hour from Miami. A busy traffic load of regional and international flights come in daily. The Puerto Vallarta airport is located 4 miles from downtown.   The Cabo San Lucas airport(SJD) is Los Cabos International Airport situated 8 miles from San Jose del Cabo and 29 miles from Cabo San Lucas. 

Pets can be brought into Mexico as long as the following two documents are presented.

1. A vaccination certificate confirming your pet has been vaccinated against rabies, hepatitis, pip and leptospirosis. 2. An official health certificate issued by a veterinarian no more than 72 hours before entering Mexico.

Rugged mountains, mangrove swamps, dry deserts and thick forests color Mexcio with every form of adventurous terrain. Natural freshwater pools are hidden in various caverns and beautiful beaches border the region on the east and west coast. The dense tropical jungles and striking canyons are just some of the wonders contributing to Mexico’s 47 national parks and 22 biosphere reserves.

The average temperature of Mexico stays pleasantly between 77 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

Spanish is the common language of Mexico.

Adopted in 1917, Mexico’s constitution provides for a federal republic with powers dispersed between executive, legislative and judicial branches. Though the executive branch has historically dominated, the opposition parties formed in the legislature in 1997 has given Congress increasing authority in the civil agenda.

Abandoned cities, massive temples and unexplained edifices have bewildered tourists for centuries and attest to Mexico’s enduring history. Travelers will undoubtedly find themselves exploring Aztecan pyramids and lost Teotihuacan cities. The famous city of Chichen Itza stands as a monument to Mayan power and is one of the most visited Heritage sites in Mexico. • Copy Birth Certificate, translated into Spanish and confirmed by resident country.

Restrictions :

• The wedding is legal only if performed at a civil ceremony at a local Civil Register Office. Religious and traditional ceremonies can be performed after.
• Depending on the Mexican state, there is a waiting period of 2-3 days.
• Divorced persons must present a certified copy of the divorce decree and wait a year before applying for a marriage license.
• Widows and Widowers must present a certified copy of the death certificate of spouse.
• Blood tests for RPR, HIV and Thorax are required in Mexico before getting married. We recommend these tests be taken in Mexico at least 2 days before the wedding.
• Two witnesses over 18 years old with proper identification are required to get married.
• Sunday weddings are not permitted.
• There is a Marriage License fee of $30 U.S.
• Total civil fees for application and other are approximately $230 U.S.

An ideal option for families is the Superior Family Suite, which comes with two connecting rooms, a fully stocked minibar with Hershey's milkshakes and more, a beach bucket kit, adult- and kid-sized bathrobes and slippers, an Xbox One, and a welcome bottle of wine. Some guests say the highlight of their trip was the food, including the "dancing chef" who serves ice cream while showing off his dance moves.

Enjoy all that Cancún has to offer at beachfront Paradisus Cancún, located on the stunning Caribbean Sea. This resort offers an "All-Fun Inclusive" concept with amenities such as unlimited access and round-trip transportation to all Grupo Xcaret parks and tours.

Choose from Xel-Há, a natural water park; Xenses, a sensory amusement park; Xichén tours of the archaeological site of Chichén Itzá ; a Xenotes tours of Cancun's cenotes (a type of sinkhole); and more. There's no time for the kids to get bored or a need for parents to constantly entertain them – and the adults can have plenty of fun too. Access to the theme parks was a big draw for past guests, but many also commented on the luxury of having butler service.

The "Gourmet Inclusive" experience includes 24-hour room service, gourmet meals (which many travelers have praised), activity programs, a kids club, a family lounge, snorkeling and kayaking equipment, and more. Kids will love learning to cook through the Little Eko Chefs program. The resort has plenty of baby amenities included to make your stay as enjoyable as possible, such as bottle sterilizers and warmers, strollers, baby food, cribs, and more.

On a family vacation at Generations Riviera Maya Resort, children, parents and grandparents alike can create memories while snorkeling, kayaking, taking a greenhouse tour or even getting an indulgent treatment at the Mayan-inspired Náay Spa (which also has kids services for ages 4 to 12). There are plenty of suite options available, with some that sleep up to six adults and six kids, plus swim-up suites that have direct pool access. One of the favorite features of past guests was the butler service.

This top resort is located in the Cancún Hotel Zone , with access to expansive white sand beaches. The Seadust Cancún Family Resort offers an all-inclusive experience with 10 restaurants, 10 bars, a spa, a kids club and more. With a stay here you'll have access to a water park, zip lining, theater shows, mini-golf and a teen hangout space.

There are also three infinity pools, an adult-only pool and a children's pool. Recent lodgers loved the kids pool, which is geared toward families. The Family Suite is spacious and comfortable for the entire family; it features a bunk bed area tucked away from the main sleeping space and a balcony with a partial ocean view.

This all-inclusive luxury resort near Puerto Vallarta starts with a massage and infused tea upon arrival and only gets better from there. The AAA Five Diamond-rated Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit offers award-winning cuisine, a five-star spa, an infinity pool, beach access and creative amenities for kids of all ages. Its "Beyond All Inclusive, Beyond All Compare" concept provides a truly bespoke vacation.

Families can enjoy activities such as snorkeling, tennis, scuba diving lessons, live music and theme nights. Teenagers have plenty of amenities of their own at the high-tech teen club, from video gaming booths and arcade games to karaoke and a disco dance floor. There's also the Kids' Club Terrace for ages 6 to 12 that has table games and TV programming. While the younger guests are being entertained, parents can get away for a round of golf, a spa ritual such as the Grand Velas Water Ceremony or a cocktail at Koi Sports Bar.

The property is a tropical respite with ocean views, an expansive beach, breathtaking sunsets and lush garden landscaping. For accommodations that allow enough room for family members to spread out, consider the two-bedroom Family Suite or the larger Family Residence. The Family Residence – which comes with either two or three bedrooms – is a two-story suite with a bar, a dining room, living spaces and a terrace hot tub with ocean views. Previous visitors can't say enough great things about this resort, giving high praise to the food and service. Grand Velas also has a location in Playa del Carmen, Grand Velas Riviera Maya .

The majority of Mexico's all-inclusive resorts are set along its two coasts. Some of the most popular east coast destinations include Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Cozumel, all of which are known for beautiful beaches, lively nightlife, and proximity to cenotes and Mayan Ruins. On the west coast, there's Cabo San Lucas, famous for its rocky coasts, and Puerto Vallarta, an LGBTQ+ hotspot known for beaches and jungles.

Is it worth it to pay for all-inclusives?

All-inclusives can be worth the price if you plan on spending the majority of your time at the resort. Because you're already paying for all meals, you should dine on-property the majority of the time. Many on-resort activities are also included in the rates, so you’ll get more bang for your buck if you take advantage of them. The best part about an all-inclusive resort is the convenience—you don't have to think about budgeting or splitting bills with your party, and that alone may be worth the price.

At just 196 rooms, Hotel NYX Cancun is more on the more boutique side of the scale when it comes to all-inclusive resorts. As such, it feels delightfully uncrowded, despite being located right in the middle of Cancun's Hotel Zone. There are two pools, two restaurants, and a lobby bar, as well as a lovely stretch of beach lined with Balinese-style loungers. There's no formal spa, but you can get massages in private treatment rooms or on the beach for an additional fee.

The Explorean Kohunlich, Chetumal

If the beach isn't your thing—or if traditional all-inclusives aren't your thing—this is the hotel for you. It's a 40-room property located about an hour inland from the laid-back city of Chetumal on the border of Mexico and Belize, so there's no beach to be found. Instead, you're surrounded by lush jungle, singing birds, and Mayan ruins. On the relaxation front, there's a small infinity pool overlooking the canopy, as well as a spa with Mayan-inspired treatments. And for meals, you'll be dining at an open-air palapa-style restaurant serving local cuisine. The hotel is happy to set you up with bike tours of the Mayan ruins, excursions into town, or even sailboat charters. But who's to blame you if you only want to hop in a hammock and take in the soothing sounds of nature at the hotel?

Viva Wyndham Maya, Playa del Carmen

With more than 600 rooms, this is a big resort, and it certainly has the big energy to match. There's always something going on here, whether that's a themed party, fitness classes, or live shows. And there are so many activities to enjoy, too—trapeze, archery, kayaking, windsurfing, rock climbing, among other resort sports, are all included in the rate. While this is a family-friendly resort, there are some great adult amenities, including the spa, a nightclub, and an adult-only pool with a bar.

Solmar Resort, Cabo San Lucas

Cabo isn't known for being an affordable town, but the Solmar Resort bucks the trend as one of the most budget-friendly properties. That said, it's a short (yet walkable) distance away from the nightlife of Cabo, but that means plenty of peace and quiet on property. This is a family-friendly resort, though, so you can expect a little noise by the two pools, but the overall vibe is very relaxed. The one thing to note is that you can't swim in the ocean here—the sea is too rough. But the pool areas make up for that, as there's a poolside sushi bar and a swim-up bar here.

On Mexico's west coast is the busy resort town of Acapulco, where you'll find this budget-friendly resort. It is, admittedly, a little outdated, but it offers one of the best bangs for your buck when it comes to its all-inclusive packages. All seven of its dining venues are included in the rate, as are top-shelf liquors and 24-hour room service. And many activities at the resort are covered, too, including an introductory scuba diving lesson in one of the pools. The one thing you'll have to splurge on is spa treatments, but we think that's worth the extra cost.

Under $600:

Dreams Huatulco Resort & Spa, Tangolunda

The state of  Oaxaca may not be nearly as popular as some of the major resort destinations like Quintana Roo (where you'll find Cancún and Playa del Carmen), but that means the crowds are far fewer. But at Dreams Huatulco, you'll find all the classic amenities you've come to expect in an all-inclusive resort. There are three pools, five restaurants, six bars and lounges, and a spa. You'll find plenty of daily entertainment, from live shows to karaoke nights to movie nights. There are also many on-resort sports like archery, kayaking, and windsurfing, most of which are included in the rate.

Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort, Akumal

The 310-room Akumal Bay Beach & Wellness Resort is set on a wide stretch of soft-sand beach, and that's this property's main draw. Included in the rate is a daily hour-long snorkel rental, which gives you the chance to spot sea turtles just offshore. Landside, guests can dine at one of six restaurants, including a sushi bar and a Peruvian restaurant, as well as a 24-hour snack bar and a lobby bar. The wellness offerings include a spa with a sauna and whirlpool (massage treatments cost extra), a gym, and free daily yoga classes. And there are four pools for those needing a break from the sea.

Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen

Despite being in the heart of town, there is a small beach here (it sustained hurricane damage and erosion.) Other highlights include a rooftop sushi bar, a serene spa, and a large pool area. If you're looking for a vivacious time, don't miss the wild weekly foam party on Saturday nights—and really any show hosted around the pool. And if you're not, there's plenty of chill vibes to be found throughout the resort.

The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences, Playa del Carmen

The Fives Beach Hotel & Residences isn't exclusively an all-inclusive resort, but you can opt for meal plans that make it so. And it's a good idea, too. There are 15 restaurants and bars across the property, with cuisines ranging from Italian to Thai. There's even an exclusive gin bar if gin and tonics are your thing. The property also has a fairly lively pool and beach scene—there are five pools, each with their own bar, as well as a full beach club. When you're not dining or drinking, head for the 15,000-square-foot spa for some recovery. We recommend the hydrotherapy circuit. 

Barceló Maya Caribe, Playa del Carmen

You want it? Barceló Maya Caribe has it. The 1,000-plus-room resort has an extraordinary number of amenities: mini-golf, bowling alley, pickleball courts, tennis courts, non-motorized sports, theaters, nightclubs, a teen nightclub, a water park, a kids' club—you get the point. There are even two escape rooms (that do cost an additional point). With so much to do, you might find it hard to enjoy the beach, the three restaurants, the eight pools, or the 32,000-square-foot spa. One of the more unique features of the hotel is that some of its Premium Level rooms are swim-up—they open directly into pools.

Programming at this well-landscaped Puerto Vallarta resort in Marina Vallarta is largely geared towards families. The kids' club is a major draw—they host plenty of events for kids and teens, from craft workshops to sports tournaments to pool activities—but programming extends to other parts of the resort, too, such as milk and cookies in your room. Adults and children alike can enjoy other resort amenities like the lagoon-style pool, tennis courts, a rock-climbing wall, and an archery range. For adults, there are plenty of wellness offerings, too, from the spa to yoga and stretching classes.

Mia Reef Isla Mujeres, Isla Mujeres

This colorful all-inclusive resort is located on a private island off Isla Mujeres, itself just a 20 minute ferry ride from Cancún. Although it's not very hard to get to—it's connected by a footbridge to the main island and is just a few minutes from downtown—it does have a secluded feel. With fewer than 200 rooms, it's not an overly large resort, so it's a somewhat quiet atmosphere, but it is family-friendly and the small beach can get a little crowded. It gets even quieter at the small spa, which has just three treatment rooms, including a couples suite.

This five-star property is definitely on the upper side of affordable, but you can definitely find good deals for stays outside of peak travel periods like winter break. While it has a fine-sand beach that's definitely a draw for most guests, the property stands out for its lush gardens. You'll find much local flora throughout, and quite a bit of local fauna, such as monkeys, colorful birds, and even turtles. There are 16 restaurants and bars, including an ice cream shop, a cigar lounge, and a Texas-style smokehouse. Wellness is a big focus, between free aerobics and yoga classes for adults and the spa. 

Hotel Xcaret Mexico, Playa del Carmen

This is a massive property with 900 rooms, but the layout of the resort is such that it doesn't feel crowded anywhere—they're spread across five distinct "casas" that are smaller in scale. There are 12 restaurants here, all of which are included in the rate, as well as a variety of pools and a spa that also offers yoga classes and meditation lessons. The best part about staying at any Xcaret property is that you get free entrance to Xcaret parks where you can see Mayan ruins, swim in cenotes, and go snorkeling. There's even an on-property lagoon for snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming.

Occidental at Xcaret Destination, Playa Del Carmen

Right next to the eco-archeological park of Xcaret, this 25-acre resort is filled with wildlife, from monkeys to coatis to iguanas. It's also filled with guests—there are more than 700 rooms. But there's plenty of space to spread out across the 11 restaurants, 10 bars, five pools, fitness center, sports courts, beach club, and spa. It should be noted, though, that there's no ocean access here—the beach lines a lagoon. Guests at this resort get free entrance into the Xcaret park, where they can see Mayan cultural performances.

Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico)

Nestled in Puerto Vallarta, between the cerulean Banderas Bay and the towering Sierra Madre mountains, Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa may be the most perfectly situated hotel on this list. It's also one of our favorite family all-inclusives, thanks to its robust programming, including sandcastle building, painting lessons and an activity-packed kids club helmed by a bilingual staff. It can be hard to find a property that appeals to both kids and teens. Hilton Cancun Mar Caribe All-Inclusive Resort manages it seamlessly, however, thanks to separate kids and teens clubs, plus nightly entertainment that includes live DJs and dancing fit for the whole family.
