Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 Review

trek marlin 8 gen 2 mountain bike

Trek Marlin 8 is the premium build from Trek’s family of cross-country hardtail mountain bikes.

The Trek Marlin 8’s price is $1,330, a significant increase on the 7, but this is justified by air suspension, a tubeless-ready wheelset, and wide-range gearing, making it far more capable than the other Marlins.

Beginner and intermediate riders can be confident aboard this bike, taking advantage of its race-ready characteristics. Alternatively, load it up with a rack and kickstand and use it as a mixed-terrain commuter.

Our Trek Marlin 8 review will examine the bike’s strengths and weaknesses and offer a verdict on who should buy it.

How Heavy Is the Trek Marlin 8?

The Trek Marlin 8’s weight is 29.1 lbs, almost three pounds lighter than the cheapest model. In addition, this bike is two to three pounds lighter than similarly-priced hardtails, which makes it notably faster going uphill.

  • Air suspension fork
  • Tubeless-ready wheelset
  • Lightweight for the price
  • SRAM SX Eagle is a step down from the Marlin 7’s Deore M4100

Trek Marlin 8 Specs

Trek marlin 8 gen 2 full review.

Next, we’ll dive deeper into the components and features that make this bike stand out. But first, note the Trek Marlin 8 2022 is the same as the Marlin 8 Gen 2.

Is the Trek Marlin 8 a Trail Bike?

When comparing the Trek Marlin 7 vs. Marlin 8, there’s a discernable difference in the ability to handle chunkier terrain. However, the Marlin 8 is still considered a cross-country bike , given the 100mm of suspension and XC-specific components. Most trail bikes have 130mm or more suspension travel.

RockShox Judy Silver Solo Air Fork

Trek Bikes went for RockShox’s Judy Silver Solo Air suspension fork, which is the standout component of this bike’s setup. It’s relatively light, moves smoothly through the travel, and has decent small bump sensitivity.

Marlin 8 Gen 2 front suspension

The RockShox Judy air fork will easily give you your money’s worth if you decide to take Trek Marlin 8 on proper MTB trails.

Of course, it’s not going to handle big hits on rough trails with only 30mm stanchions and 100mm of travel  (80mm on XXS, XS), but it’s plenty capable on fast, flowy XC trails. It also has basic TurnKey lockout and preload adjustments.

Can You Add a Dropper Post to a Trek Marlin 8?

Yes, you can add some of the best dropper posts to a Trek Marlin 8. There is a hole to run the dropper internally through the top tube, but you will have to run the wire externally through the seat tube, as there is no hole at the bottom.

12-speed Gearing and Shimano Brakes

The Trek Marlin 8 mountain bike uses a modern 1×12-speed SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain, comprising a 30t steel chainring and an 11-50t cassette. This combination provides tons of range for the steepest climbs you’ll encounter.

Trek Marlin 8 SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain

SRAM’s SX Eagle 1×12 drivetrain offers a massive gear range to conquer virtually any hill you come across on your rides.

Although the gear range is better than the Marlin 7, we’re disappointed with the switch to SX Eagle, as it is a step down from Deore M4100 in performance and durability.

Thankfully, Trek maintained the Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes on this bike, ensuring reliable stopping power in all conditions.

Tubeless-ready Maxxis Ardent Tires and Bontrager Kovee Rims

The Trek Marlin 8 takes a huge step up with XC-specific Maxxis Ardent EXO tubeless-ready tires. These are fast-rolling, race-ready tires for dry to mixed trail conditions. The three-compound design reduces rolling resistance and optimizes traction, while the EXO layer provides cut and abrasion protection.

Running a tubeless setup gives the Marlin 8 MTB a massive boost in capability and comfort. Riders can run lower tire pressure to enhance traction, shock absorption, and control, opening up more trail opportunities. In addition, the risk of puncturing is greatly reduced.

Likewise, the Bontrager Kovee tubeless-ready rims are a marked improvement over the Connection rims on the other four models. They’re lighter, more durable, and designed specifically for cross-country riding.

Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 Sizing Chart

  • XXS — 4’5″-4’9″ / 135-145cm
  • XS — 4’9″-5’1″ / 145-155cm
  • S —  5’1″-5’5″ / 155-165cm
  • M —  5’5″-5’8″ / 165-173cm
  • M/L — 5’8″-5’11” / 173-180cm
  • L —  5’11”-6’2″ / 180-188cm

  • 2XL — 6’5″-6’8″ / 195-203cm

Who Is Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 Best Suited For?

The Trek Marlin 8 is a proper XC bike for cross-country cycling , ideal for beginner or intermediate mountain bikers who want an affordable yet capable option to hit the trails. Likewise, this bike can double as a comfortable mixed-terrain commuter or bikepacking machine, thanks to the rack and kickstand mounts.

Marlin 8 Gen 2 with a rear rack

Marlin 8 is compatible with a rear rack and even with a kickstand, so it can be a practical daily commuter or even a capable bikepacking machine.

The Marlin 8 is a broadly-appealing option as its versatility, reasonable price, and durability make it a great bike to develop your mountain biking skills on and even upgrade in the future.

Is Marlin 8 Gen 2 a Good Buy?

The Marlin 8 is an excellent buy at this price . You get Trek’s renowned reliability, air suspension, a tubeless-ready wheelset, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, and a lightweight, compliant frame.

Marlin 8 top view

Trek gave Marlin 8 a premium finish, so the bike looks a lot more expensive than it really is, which is a nice plus if that’s something you care about.

It isn’t easy to find a hardtail at this price that handles cross-country racing, but this bike can put it up to the more expensive models. Trek Marlin 8 reviews online also paint an overwhelmingly positive picture, a testament to the quality and the value this bike offers in the sub-$1,500 price range.

Choose Trek’s Marlin 8 if you’re looking for an affordable, race-ready XC hardtail that’s equally at home in the city.

Trek Marlin 8 Review: 2024 Buyer’s Guide

In our 2024 buyers guide we review the Trek Marlin 8 review, plus four alternative bikes with similar price points and features.

Our buyer’s guide reviews the Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 mountain bike and how it stacks up against four other bikes with similar price points and features.

We here at Fun Outdoors are long-time Trek mountain bike users, so when the Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 was announced, we were excited to try it out. After rigorous testing on various trails, we can definitively say this bike is our new favorite.

I’ve used a lot of mountain bikes over the years, and to be honest, many of them have started to blend together. I figured the Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 would be similar to Trek 2 Gen 1, and in some ways, it is, but it’s also so much more.

For me, it’s the little things about this bike. There are so many improvements that seem minor but make a huge difference. The new air spring or 1x drivetrain, for instance.

Overall, while the Trek Marlin 8 is nothing groundbreaking, it’s clear to see how much of an improvement it is over its predecessor. It’s truly a bike for the modern rider.

Whether you are a regular mountain biker or want something a little sturdier for your commute, this bike will do the job.

If you want to know the full story behind why I find this bike so charming and why it has quickly become Trek’s most popular bike, keep reading to find out about all its nifty features.

You’ll want to check out this review if you’re looking for a new bike.

Trek Marlin 8 Overview

If you’re someone who usually scoffs when someone says: “This bike can do everything,” then get ready to scoff because this bike can do everything.

The Trek Marlin 8 is the most versatile mountain bike on the market. From winning races to getting to work, this bike can handle it.

It is a specialized mountain racing bike, yet it feels so at home on city streets. The secret to this lies in how easy the bike is to adjust. It’s a comfortable ride for any size rider, and here’s why.

Trek Marlin 8

Top Features

While the Trek Marlin 8 has many new and interesting features, there are some standouts among them. Here are some of my favorite features of the Trek Marlin 8.

Internal Cable Routing

The internal cable routing is perhaps my favorite feature. I’ve seen other bikes do it before, but the Trek Marlin 8 does it with style.

To keep the cables clean and safe, they run inside the frame. The shift and brake cable enter the frame below the handlebar and pop back out only where they’re needed. The holes in the frame are small enough to keep out mud and dirt but large enough that they don’t choke the cables.

By running the cables through the frame, they get a longer lifespan and improve the overall look of the bike. There’s nothing to get caught on and nothing to get in the way of the sleek frame design.

Suspension Lockout

If there’s one thing the Trek Marlin 8 is good at, it’s making all riders feel like pros. The extra features and easy-to-use systems allow anyone to make on-the-fly adjustments to their preference. The suspension lockout is just one example of this.

The suspension lockout allows riders to switch the fork to inactive. This means that the suspension is essentially on pause to allow for better pedaling efficiency.

This is a great feature for when you hit the straightaways and want to focus more on speed and pedaling than on bump reduction.

Easy Spring Adjustment

The Trek Marlin 8 uses the RockShox Solo air spring. Not only is this air spring lighter than a coil spring, but it’s also much simpler to use.

The RockShox Solo air spring allows the rider to perfectly balance the positive and negative for any weight and sag preference.

Through one valve, the rider can adjust the positive and negative pressure. A small dimple on the inside of the tube tells the rider when the pressure is even.

This one device reduces the amount of finicking and adjusting the rider has to do and allows riders of any size to achieve perfect balance.

The air spring is lightweight and only has one valve, meaning less can go wrong. Getting the fork tension right is a must for anyone looking to hit the trails; the RockShox Solo makes the process run more smoothly.

Streamlined 1x Drivetrain

For maximum efficiency, the Trek Marlin 8 uses a 1x drivetrain. This simplifies the overall design, reduces bulk and weight, and rids the bike of unnecessary gears .

While 1x drivetrains have fewer gears than the standard 2x or 3x, they also have much simpler designs and fewer moving parts.

The wide-range cassettes provide a comparable number of gears to 2x and 3x drivetrains, while the clutch-style rear derailleurs keep the chain steady on bumpy terrain, and the chainrings help hold the chain in place better.

This combination of technologies allows the 1x drivetrain to run smoothly through the optimal number of gears. Using fewer parts, 1x drivetrains are lighter, smaller, and less likely to break.

The Trek Marlin 8 has all the gears it needs and none of the extra weight or hassle that other bikes struggle with. The 1x system is a must for any good mountain bike.

Better Body Shape

The Trek Marlin 8 can accommodate more riders than ever with its unique new body design. This bike was made with everyone in mind, from young teens to larger adults.

The Trek Marlin 8 has seven frame size options, ranging from extra, extra small to extra, extra-large. While the regular frame’s top tube is already angled, sizes XXS-S have a curved top tube to allow for easier mounting.

The curving top tube starts in the same place but is angled down more steeply. It then curves upward to meet the seat tube in the same place as the regular frame. The curve’s plateau is lower than the straight top tube at its lowest point.

This new design feature allows even the smallest of riders to easily and comfortably mount the bike without getting caught on the top tube.

In addition to being easier to use, the Trek Marlin 8 frame also looks fabulous. The design is sleek and uniform, made from matching triangles rather than odd shapes. The frame is alpha silver aluminum to make it light yet strong. It sits perfectly between the wheels and grants tons of clearance to the front wheel.

The entire design is streamlined for maximum efficiency and style.

Trek Marlin 8 Alternatives

If, for some reason, you’re not entirely satisfied with the Trek Marlin 8, here are some other models I suggest taking a look at.

Trek X-Caliber Series

Trek’s X-Caliber series is like the Trek Marlin 8 but has a lighter, thinner frame for those riders looking to focus on speed.

Trek X-Caliber Series

These bikes are the perfect combination of a mountain bike and a racing bike; thin, sleek, yet sturdy and resilient.

Trek Roscoe Series

Trek Roscoe Series

Trek’s Roscoe series is for riders that are looking for a burly bike that is more forgiving when handling rough terrains. These bikes had a sturdier frame and larger tires to ensure better grip and resilience.

The Trek Roscoe Series shares many features with the Trek Marlin series but works better for very rough terrains.

Specialized Rockhopper Expert

Specialized Rockhopper Expert

The Specialized Rockhopper Expert is comparable in price to the Trek Marlin 8 but focuses more on speed. The Specialized Rockhopper Expert also uses the RockShox Solo air spring, but there have been issues with the bike’s derailleur and shifting.

Giant Talon 2

Giant Talon 2

The Giant Talon 2 is your typical mountain bike but is much more affordable. It’s made for single-track riders looking to climb faster and has better control over the downs. This bike has an ALUXX frameset and comes with an 80mm or 100mm suspension fork.

It’s more specialized than the Trek Marlin 8 and costs much less.

Final Thoughts

The Trek Marlin 8 is the bike of champions. It is a top-tier mountain racing bike that can double as a casual expedition bike. It uses all the latest technologies like a 1x drivetrain and RockShox Solo air spring to deliver the best ride at an affordable price.

The frame comes in two variations and seven sizes to accommodate every rider, the cables run internally to keep them clean and safe, and all other bike parts have been streamlined to reduce weight and bulk.

This bike handles like a dream, and I couldn’t be happier with it. While it’s not a cheap bike, it’s very reasonably priced for the quality you’re getting. This bike is comparable to tricked-out custom rides but retails at a standard mountain bike price.

If you want a new mountain bike, I highly recommend the Trek Marlin 8 . You can find it on Trek’s website or in person at Trek Bicycle stores.

The tubeless Maxxis Ardent Race tires provide excellent grip on corners while its wide rims increase cornering control and stability, giving riders confidence to push further through technical terrain at speed.

Its aluminum alloy double wall Bontrager Kovee rims include Tubeless Ready technology so those who wish to can further reduce rotating weight for improved acceleration responsiveness on climbs yet maintain stiff sidewalls on descents for better cornering control under load.

It’s worth mentioning that these features make the Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 suitable for everyday commuting as well as tackling more demanding trail rides by simply adjusting the air suspension setting from soft to firm accordingly – which takes less than a minute!

When rolling on tarmac roads, you’ll be pleased with how easy it is to spin up speed and dominate flat roads.

On steep inclines, traction won’t be a problem thanks largely to its larger tires which provide ample grip across all surfaces.

Trek Marlin 8 Bike: In-Depth Review

One of the wonderful things about mountain bikes is that they all look the same on the surface level. But if one looks a bit more closely, a world of differences is extremely noticeable. While veterans and new bike enthusiasts both have different expectations of bicycles, there is a common ground. It is Trek Marlin 8 Bike.

There are always the bare essentials or requirements that these bikes have to pass. For example, the most important characteristics a mountain bike simply must have are durability and reliability. The mountain bike has to protect both itself and the rider from the harsh conditions it has to be ridden through.

While most of the more known bikes do pass this test of being incredibly sturdy and reliable, there are always models that stick out. As such, one particular bike has emerged, the one that has the potential to become one of the top-tier mountain bikes today.

The bike is the Marlin 8 model from the Trek Bicycle Corporation, and here are our thoughts about what makes this interesting model so special.

Table of Contents

Trek Marlin 8 Mountain Bicycle

Trek marlin 8 specifications, cable routing, body design, rockhopper expert, roscoe and x-caliber models, who is this bike for.

This new model does look like a regular bike at first sight, but it feels different when one uses it. As previously said, most mountain bikes are always built to be sturdy and reliable, and the riders feel it.

Neither you nor the bike feels the bumps and hits, you just continue on riding as if nothing happened. This bike is different. In addition to being really durable and reliable, it does have some extra characteristics that put it above the rest of other mountain bikes. Actually, it might be above other bikes in general.

This bike is really an all-around type of bicycle, as one can see from its characteristics.

  • Wide range of frame sizes.
  • Excellent selection of tires.
  • Equipped with a dropper seatpost.
  • Has great potential for upgrades to improve performance and customization.
  • Some riders may prefer a more snug or compact seated position, as the bike has a roomier one.
  • The use of quick-release instead of thru-axle may not provide as much stiffness and stability in the wheels.
  • Internal cable routing can sometimes result in rattling noises.

Trek has had the majority of people in mind when making this bike, trying to make it available to most people. As such, the bike comes in the majority of frame sizes , with an Alpha Silver Aluminum frame base for adults.

The rims and tires are Bontrager Kovee and Maxxis Ardent, respectively, also in various sizes. The whole drivetrain is equipped with SRAM parts, from the shifter to the chain.

Finally, the Trek Marlin 8 is equipped with a Shimano MT200 set of brakes , for all the daredevil riders out there. As for the bike weight itself, it stands at the 30-pound mark, with tubes included. The weight limit of the bike is 10 times its weight, so around 300 pounds.

Trek Marlin 8 Features

The Trek Marlin 8 model does have some interesting features that work perfectly with each other and result in an imaginative design choice.

The cables are placed inside the frame, which is not a new breakthrough, but nonetheless, a good choice. This makes the bike look much cleaner and slicker than ever.

The cables are not choked inside the tubing , as the hole is big enough to avoid choking but small enough to keep the mud out. The cables enter the frame below the handlebar. Besides the aesthetic look, this choice also keeps the cables safe by putting them away from outside harm.

The cables will get more longevity, as nothing will get caught in them and spoil the look of the bike.

The Trek Marlin 8 has a 1x drivetrain, which reduces the weight of the bike by removing the surplus gears and similar bulky parts . The downside of the 1x, as some might know, is the fewer gears than other standard drivetrains.

But the 1x also has fewer moving parts, which reduces the chance of something breaking down. The drivetrain also contains wide-range cassettes and rear derailleurs combined with chainrings that keep the chain laser-steady on off-road terrains.

RELATED: Salsa Timberjack SLX 27.5 Mountain Bike Review

This combination of parts helps in smoother gear shifts while keeping the number of moving parts and overall weight at a minimum level. You should have no worries if you think the 1x system is insufficient for a mountain bike, as the Marlin 8 showed otherwise.

This model has 12 gears which is more than enough to conquer the uphill rides and have controlled descents. The model is equipped with the SRAM PG-1210 , known for its reliability and control.

This model does not use the standard coil spring but an air one, one that is much less complicated.

The air spring is controlled through a valve, through which the rider can adjust the pressure while following a dimple inside to check when the pressure is even. The air spring that is fitted to this bike is the RockShox Solo air spring.

This one is known for being a lightweight spring with one valve, so it is easier to find a malfunction when there is only one part. It is also known for making the process of adjusting the tension go smoothly, which is important for both new bikers and veterans alike.

One of the best features of this model, the suspension allows you to switch the fork to inactive, in order to efficiently pedal.

This feature is common in professional bikes, and it really makes you feel like a pro biker. This feature is primarily used for straight roads and flat surfaces , or wherever bikers prioritize speed.

As previously said, the design is suited for everyone, having the majority of sizes to fit as many as possible, from XXS to XXL.

In addition, the top tube is at an angle for easier mounting, with an additional model that has even more of a curvy top tube.

The frame design itself looks amazing and sleeker than ever. It looks more put-together in a way, rather than having an eclectic visual style. The length of the frame and the wheels’ distance look balanced and eye-catching.

Finally, the alpha silver aluminum frame adds to the streamlined design that favors style at first sight.

Alternatives

If you have a specific reason for not wanting to buy the Marlin 8 model, here are a few options for you. These bikes are similar to the Marlin 8 models, some are from a different manufacturer, while some are Trek Corporation models.

The Rockhopper Expert from Specialized Bicycle Components Inc. is a great option. It has a similar price tag but is more focused on speed. The Rockhopper Expert has the RockShox part in common with Marlin 8.

The Talon 2 from Giant is another good alternative. The strength of this bike is uphill and downhill rides. Another good thing is that this model is more affordable than the Marlin 8, making it a popular alternative to the said model.

Literally, any Roscoe model from Trek is a good alternative. They are bigger and made for rough and bumpy rides. Being from the same manufacturer, they share a lot in common, with the Roscoe models being especially useful in extremely rough conditions.

As for the X-Caliber models, from Trek, they are mostly a combination of racing and mountain bike. They are thinner but still sturdy, but unstable for extremely rough terrains, built mostly with speed in mind.

This bicycle is a great model with amazing equipped parts, however, it might not be for everyone. This is a top bicycle meant mostly for professional bikers who like to go off the beaten path.

On the flip side, it can also be used for causal rides, as it has really good handling, suitable for everyone. To put it shortly, it is a bike that can be used by everyone, it just depends on a few things.

Depends on your own taste, needs, and budget, but the Marlin 8 model is really an all-around bike that is a jack of all trades.

One of the wonderful things about mountain bikes is that they all look the same at first sight. But if one looks a bit more closely, there are a lot of noticeable differences.

While the Trek Marlin 8 model does have the durability and reliability of a mountain bike, it is much more. It is a rare jack-of-all-trades bike that everybody can enjoy, regardless of their own needs.

Everything is a breath of fresh air for this model, from its design to the specifics. As such, this model can be recommended to everyone, it is one of the best models currently in the market.

The price will not set you back too much, as it usually floats around a thousand-dollar price tag. It is a bit more expensive than other mountain bikes, as the average price of mountain bikes is around 800 dollars, max. But you do get a great bike for the price.

As said in the article, this bike is really for everyone’s needs. It is sturdy and great for off-roading, it is good for straight rides on flat surfaces, although lacking speed. All in all, you would not make a mistake if you bought it.

While it is a jack of all trades, there might be some other models that excel in sprinting and uphill or downhill rides. What this model lacks is speed, so it is not the best option for bikers who want to ride it in these conditions.

Trek Marlin 8 Vs Specialized Rockhopper Elite

August 30, 2022

Trek Marlin 8 Vs Specialized Rockhopper Elite | PedalChef

This article may contain affiliate links where we earn a commission from qualifying purchases.

Trek Marlin 8 and Specialized Rockhopper Elite are likely to be at the top of your list if you're seeking a more adaptable hardtail mountain bike.

Many different bicycle brands now share a lot of similar features in many of their models. When attempting to choose one such model over the other, even more confusion and doubt arise. The same is the case with Trek Marlin 8 and Specialized Rockhopper Elite.

Considering the fact that these two bikes have many similar features, which one is better? Is it Rockhopper Elite or Marlin 8? The Trek Marlin 8 has a higher price tag than the Specialized Rockhopper Elite. Geometry, materials, and user experience are some of the other variables.

But before you make the final decision, it is always best to analyze all the features that matter the most to you. Would you pay a few extra dollars for a bike like the Marlin 8 because of its features? Or, like Rockhopper Elite, is it possible to get nearly the same specs for a slightly lower price?

To help you choose the best of these bikes, we have listed out all the features of both the models to let you have a side-by-side comparison of these. In the end, you'll be able to select the one that best fits your requirements and is worth your money.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

‍ Comparison: Trek Marlin 8 Vanalyses Specialized Rockhopper Elite

Both the Trek Marlin 8 and the Specialized Rockhopper Elite are hardtails. If you don't know what a hardtail bike is, let's learn a little about the term. Otherwise, you may skip this part and jump directly to 'geometry'.

Hardtail bikes are those which feature a shock only on the front end of the bicycle. Contrary to these are full-suspension bikes. These are the bikes that offer shocks on both the front end and the rear end of the bike.

In practice, a rider on a full-suspension bike will experience fewer jumps on a bumpy trail, but a hardtail bike with no rear shock may jump around more as the rider hits rocks and stumps while traveling on a rugged trail. Hardtails maybe a little less advanced in terms of the number of moving parts; they are lighter than full-suspension bikes and are easier to maintain.

For the geometry, we mean the dimensions of the bicycle. Different models differ in length and angles of different components like crank, handlebar, stem, saddle, seat post, frame stack and reach, head-tube, trail, fork rake, wheelbase, stand-over height, and seat tube, etc.

Let's compare a few important of these components for Trek Marlin 8 and Specialized Rockhopper Elite.

1. Size of the frame

Frames of Rockhopper Elite are built for individual heights. The bicycle comes with a guide to help you choose the appropriate frame according to your height. It has a 68.5° head-tube angle and comes with a long-arm reach. Rockhopper Elite also has an XXL frame size for heightened riders on its list. This size is not available in Marlin 8.

Trek Marlin 8 also comes in 7 different frame sizes. The XL of Marlin 8 has an approximate head angle of 69.5°. The frame is available in XS and XXS sizes as well. The bent top tube and decreased stand-over height of Marlin 8 models in the XXS make it much easier for shorter riders to get on and off the bike.

Generally, the bikes with large trails are more stable to steering. The trail length of the Trek Marlin 8 is 9.3 cm. On the other side, the trail length of the Specialized Rockhopper Elite is 9.7 cm. The comparison shows that Rockhopper Elite is far more stable to handle on unpaved terrains.

3. Fork offset and length

The Trek Marlin 8 has a fork offset of 42mm. The complete length of the fork in the Specialized Rockhopper Elite is 515mm. Its fork offset or rake is 46mm.

4. Saddle width and seat-tube length

The saddle width varies for the Marlin 8 where it has a seat-tube length of about 52.1 cm for its XL size.

Rockhopper Elite provides large saddle width for small-sized bikes and vice versa. Its XL size has a 143mm wide saddle. The same size has a seat-tube length of 50.0 cm which is angled at 73.5°.

5. Stack and reach

For the XL size of Marlin 8, the frame stack is 63 cm in length. The frame reach has a length of 46.6 cm.

On the other side, for the XL size of Rockhopper Elite, the frame stack is 64 cm in length. Whereas, the frame reach is the same as that of the former one.

6. Wheelbase

The wheelbase is the horizontal distance between the axis of rotation of the front and rear wheel of a bike. The larger the wheelbase, the more comfortable the rider is with handling and steering the bike.

The Trek Marlin 8 has an 1159mm wheelbase in its extra-large size. Whereas for the Specialized Rockhopper Elite, the wheelbase is approximately 1178mm for the XL size of the model.

Technical terrain performance

Both of these bikes are ideal for entry-level riders who want to use their mountain bikes for everything from commuting to touring. Although each of these hardtails is robust enough, these are more suitable for cross country racing than for technical terrain traversing.

The Trek Marlin 8 works pretty well on rugged trails though. If you are a weekend warrior, you can consider it a good option. The Specialized Rockhopper Elite, on the other hand, is extremely suitable for professional bikers and die-hard race fanatics. If professional bikers can use this bike, you can also use it to explore new trails.

Suspension forks

Rockhopper Elite has an advanced suspension system that uses a TurnKey shock to disperse the length of commute required to navigate the terrain. The suspension fork provided by RockShox has been upgraded to a greater extent as compared to the previous models. SoloAir fork by RockShox provides air suspension. It has 100mm of travel for its small and large-sized bikes and 80mm for the extra small-sized ones.

Trek Marlin 8 features a low-weight and high-quality suspension fork which is provided by RockShox. RockShox Judy Silver fork with a Solo Air spring and TurnKey hydraulic lockout offer smooth and sensitive air suspension just like that of Rockhopper Elite. There is also a  preload function in suspension lockout and the rebound adjustment to increase the pedaling efficiency. The extra small-sized bike and the other that features an XXS frame have up to 80mm of travel. The rest have 100mm of travel.

Both bicycles have aluminum frames which are lighter in weight but provide greater strength to the bike while maintaining the necessary rigidity.

Specialized Rockhopper Elite has the latest and greatest streamlined geometric frame. This highly finished butted alloy frame and the A1 butted aluminum tubes are made of premium material imparting a lighter weight to the bike while making it comfortable for the rider at the same time. The bike also has an XXL frame that is best suited to bikers who are 6'3" or 6'6" in height.

Trek Marlin 8 is available in multiple frame sizes to meet individual preferences. The smaller frames have short-range levers which the riders with short heights can access easily. The bike also has a rear kickstand mount that supports your bike to stand but doesn't get in your way while pedaling. The frame also flaunts a rack mount to carry your luggage while commuting.

Shimano MT200 hydraulic disk brakes in Rockhopper Elite are friendly for all types of weather. These hydraulic disk brakes feature a two-way damping circuit.

The Trek Marlin 8 contains Shimano Hydraulic disc brakes. Both of these bikes have a plus point in their brake system over other bikes. As compared to mechanical disk brakes, hydraulic disk brakes are far less susceptible to wear and tear. They are more efficient in their performance as well.

Internal cable routing

The Specialized Rockhopper Elite flaunts a very sleek internal cable routing that is designed for less clutter. This keeps the cables and hence the brakes protected from damage by preventing exposure to surrounding conditions.

Marlin 8 also has an internal cable routing system to give the bike a neat look while protecting the cables at the same time. This feature makes these two models more durable and long-lasting.

Drive-train

Trek Marlin 8 has an optimized Shimano drive-train which prevents you from stopping on a rough trail. The drive-train offers 9 levels of speed. Its alloy cranks are far more durable and provide greater quality than many of the other bikes in the same price range. Front and rear derailleurs controlled by the Shimano Acera system are paired up with Shimano Altus shifters to make shifting between the gears easy and effortless.

On the other hand, the SRAM chainset of Specialized Rockhopper Elite offers up to 12 levels of speed. It has a simple drive-train with no front derailleur. But the bike features a wide-range 11-50 cassette and a smaller jump between the gears due to two chainrings. Overall, the shifting between gears is less smooth as compared to that of the Trek Marlin 8.

Wheels and tires

The Trek Marlin 8 rolls on Maxxis Ardent Race tires and Bontrager Kovee wheels. While many sizes of the Trek Marlin 8 come with 29-inch diameter wheels, the small frame size bicycles allow you to pick between 27-1/2 and 26-inch diameter wheels.

The wheels of Marlin 8 are tubeless-ready, meaning that the tire and wheel rim are designed to seal each other, and can be utilized with or without an inner tube. If you wouldn't install tubeless wheels, the tire sometimes may suffer from large pressure on rocky terrains.

The Specialized Rockhopper Elite also features tubeless-ready wheels. Both the front and the rear tire are made up of high-quality gripton compounds. The wheels are manufactured to exhibit a great extent of ground control. The inner tubes contain a 40mm Presta valve. Rims are made of high-quality alloy for durability.

Dropper post compatibility

Not all bikes are compatible with a dropper post. But Rockhopper Elite has the compatibility for a retractable seat post. By installing a dropper post, you will be able to adjust the height of your saddle quickly without getting off the bike. You can easily adjust your saddle height even on a moving bicycle.

On the other hand, there is no internal dropper post routing in Trek Marlin 8. Thus, this bicycle is not compatible with a dropper post.

The comparison of Marlin 8 Vs Rockhopper Elite is not complete without comparing their price range. By now, you are well aware of the technical specifications and benefits of each bike. But how would you make a decision without considering the price?

The prices for both models belonging to two different brands can be seen varying on different websites. But you may consult the official website of Specialized and Trek to track the prices of these bicycles. It will save you from the confusion of searching on different retailer websites or shops.

At this time, the Trek Marlin 8 is available for a price point of $1,329.99. Whereas, you can buy the Specialized Rockhopper Elite for a slightly lower price of $1,100 (as stated by their official websites)

Which one is better?

No doubt both bikes are great for entry-level riders, you should choose the one that fits best for you depending on your preferences, your budget, and the trails you are going to master.

Personally, we will prefer the Specialized Rockhopper Elite if we had to buy a bicycle to master various trails. (It's merely our choice and not a suggestion for you.) The reason is that this bike offers more range of features with an incredible design in a lower price range as compared to the Trek Marlin 8. However, if you are someone with a shorter height, you should definitely go for Marlin 8 as they have more size options that suit short riders.

"Look fast, feel fast, go fast."

"Unlike some bikes on the cheap end of the spectrum that cater to the recreational user, this one is aimed firmly at entry-level riders who want a bike that's affordable yet capable of riding and racing hard."

Load up. Or not.

Whether you're after a lightweight singletrack shredder or sticking to the pavement on your commute to work, Marlin is compatible with all the gear you need to have a great ride.

5 things to do before every mountain bike ride

Do this quick pre-ride safety check before you hit the trails.

Product features

Will my bike have a curved top tube.

Smaller frames have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frame sizes have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

Fit for every rider

Marlin comes in seven frame sizes to suit riders of any height, and Smart Wheel Size ensures you’re on the fastest wheel that fits. The smallest sizes even come with short-reach brake levers and narrower handlebars that give smaller riders better comfort and control.

High tech, high value

Marlin looks and feels great. It’s packed with features usually found only on more expensive bikes, like a stylish frame with internal shift cable and brake hose routing, which can help your cables last longer by protecting them from the elements.

Suspension lockout

Locked suspension means your fork remains inactive, increasing pedaling efficiency. Perfect for extended road sections where efficiency is more important than bump absorption.

Rack mounts

Going for a long ride? Rack mounts make carrying accessories a breeze.

Blendr stem

Bontrager stem technology lets you clip your gear directly to the stem for clean looks, maximum user friendliness.

Internal cable routing

We route shift and brake cables through the frame to keep things clean and simple. And it looks great, too.

Rear kickstand mount

Chainstay mounts make it easy to install a rear kickstand that stays out of your way and supports bikes of all sizes. No more laying or leaning.

Plug in and get hooked Soar up trails, through town, and everywhere in between with the ultimate do-anything e-MTB. Marlin+ is an electric hardtail that gives you all the versatility you crave and adds in a simple boost for flattening climbs and cruising with ease. It packs in the electric mountain bike features that matter most, like a Bosch drive unit and a confident and capable bike frame – without the hefty price tag. Are you ready to get hooked?

Up to 20mph

2 - 4 hours

We’ve been building bikes from top to bottom for five decades and backing up every single one with a lifetime warranty. We don’t expect you to run into any issues, but if you do, we’re here to support you around the globe.

Bosch has been in the gadget game since the 1800’s, engineering and honing the top tech in cars, electronics, and more. These days, Bosch is creating some of the world’s best e-bike motors — and just like your friends here at Trek, Bosch backs you with support all around the globe.

Simplicity is key Electric bikes are the most fun when you’re focused on the ride and not the controls. Marlin+ is built around that idea – the bike is loaded with technology that disappears underneath you when you’re riding, so you don’t have to fuss with settings and can just enjoy the ride.

More bike riding, less button mashing

AUTO mode adaptive motor support adjusts assistance level automatically while you ride to help you stay in your flow. It recognizes speed reductions and tweaks support to match, so you’re always riding with just the right boost.

True power lies within

An internal Bosch CompactTube 400 watt-hour battery is fixed in the downtube, where it’s clear from the elements. Its high energy density allows for a slim and sleek profile, while an easy-to-use charge port makes topping it up a cinch.

Intuitive and informative

The Purion 200 remote gives you all the data you want with a bright color display that clearly shows your battery life, range, and speed. Simple controls let you change display data and power up your ride.

Your favorite bike goes electric Marlin+ builds off the same platform of our most popular Trek – Marlin. That means you get the same confident handling and versatility as traditional Marlin but with a little boost!

Dialed for the dirt

Take on the rough stuff with a 120mm suspension fork, dropper seatpost that lets you move around, and stiff front and rear thru axles that keep handling precise. Button that up with trail-ready MTB geometry and you’ll be ready to cut loose on the dirt.

Does your ride keep rolling beyond the trail? Marlin+ is ready for full customization for cruising the town. Rack, fender, and kickstand mounts let you add on all the gear you need on commutes to the campus or office.

  • Shop Marlin+ Accessories

Your safety matters on every ride — that’s why we set our standards sky high. Every Marlin+ is backed by Bosch and Trek, so you can count on it to exceed safety standards. And because every detail on your bike is important, we’re here to get your Marlin+ is dialed for you as soon as it’s unboxed. You never even have to lift a wrench.

UL certified

The e-systems on all Trek e-bikes are third-party tested to meet leading e-bike safety standards, and we're proud to use only systems in the US that pass stringent UL 2849 certification.

Top-tier batteries

The cells in Trek e-bike batteries come only from Tier 1 suppliers, which means they're from companies that have the highest requirements for quality, the best documentation, the longest qualification timelines, and the most experience manufacturing.

Better battery management

Every battery you'll find on a Trek e-bike has a sophisticated battery management system (BMS), which is like a security guard for the battery's cells.
