This bike is a tank, incredibly durable.

Heavy, and 10 years later it's a little old and outdated.

I've owned this bike for about 10 years. Brought it home new from the store. I've replaced the obvious parts like break pads and cables. I've replaced the seat and the pedals and recently the pedal arm. This bike has held up through everything from dragging it through the woods to Porcupine Rim trail and Moab last year. I ride it on a regular basis and I don't take it easy. The fork has been missing an end cap for 4 years and it still rides great. Sure you could have a better, lighter bike with much better suspension, but ten years of heavy use for this price can not be beat.

Strong frame

front suspension is bouncy

Owned since 2008 its been a great bike for getting around town. I don't have to worry about locking it up in the city. I like it a lot and I plan to keep it for years to come.

Good frame worthy of upgrades. The stock components were not terrible for XC either. I just killed the original deraileur in a race with several hard rock strikes. Honestly, I bent it back with pliers and it still worked pretty good! But it wasn't perfect and gave me an excuse to replace it with XT. The original wheels never gave me a problem, but I didn't do big drops either.

Most components. The original pedals were garbage. The stem and handlebars were practically wrought iron. The front fork bounced like a pogo stick up every climb.

This is a follow-up to my review from years ago. Over the 5 years that I have had this bike I upgraded when I found the right parts on sale, and now I have a machine that I am very happy with. The only original components that I need to replace are the cranks and front deraileur, which still work like new. When they die, I will replace with lighter stuff and have a super light, super durable machine, that cost very little. And if I decide to go FS, I'll just swap my parts to the new frame, and I'm good! Thanks Trek for making a durable, affordable bike.

Junky bikes growing up.

Strong Aluminum frame so it's lighter than the 820 and when you push down on the cranks you'll feel the bike respond. Don't let the die-hards fool you, there really is nothing wrong with the stock components on this bike assuming you are of average weight and riding ability (with the exception of the pedals, they really should be of some type of metal). It is easier to upgrade as you're riding ability gets better with components that fit your budget and your objective than it is to buy the higher end 4000 series and be essentialy "stuck" with those components. The saddle is moderately comfortable (if you sit further back on it) and once broken in the shocks have good response (obviously not for 6 foot acid drops!) and the rims and tires will get the job done. As earlier noted: The black and red frame is way cool!!!

Pedals and I wasn't crazy about the stock grips (too small and kinda hard). Other than that nada.

Great Value and quality parts. This is an entry level bike so when you review it, you take that into consideration. A much better value and deal than the Specialized "Hardrock" in my opinion. The frame is going to last as long as any new upgrades you might make.

Frame is thee same one as they use across the range, decent components

Pedals are rubbish, grips not great

I moved from road racing, and having tried far more expensive cycles, I stuck with this - it is a great bike

only far more expensive OR cheap garbage

Light frame, nice red colours, ez fire shifters, matching clr fork, matching clr seat. Got it on sale (no tax) so good deal for me. Feels like this bike is a head turner. Maybe because i bought the red one as opposed to the silver one... It's my first real mtn bike and I'm quite happy with the ride.

The shocks seem to be 'sticky'. It won't come back up if you press it down about an inch. You gotta pull the front of bike off the ground for the shocks to become unstuck.. Will need to ask the bike shop WTF is going on tmrw...

Good quality at that price.. I almost got the Trek 820 instead.. but that was a steel frame and would have been too heavy for me to lift over my head. I have a bike rack on my car, and i have no problems getting it up and down the car. I'm not a very strong guy either... So all the guys who think this bike is to heavy are either girls.. or just weaklings.. no one can be weaker than me!

First bike.....unless you want to count my crappy old Huffy Firemountain POS that i got from Toys r us.. I have that to my sister and she is happy with it....

new to cycling. seemed like a lot for the money when I shopped around

pedals are barely better than nothing. seat was so-so

I rode a dime store 20 years and thought I would get on another bike but decided to try again for health reasons. I thought I got alot for the money compared to the wal-mart specials and have been pleased with it. I did not want to spend a lot of money on a bike if I didn't like riding but have had a great time riding with my wife and her new bike also. After riding it a while i have found some things that were not top notch but I am getting familier with bikes and will upgrade in another year and still keep this one for the trail that goes through my town. We ride mostly on rodes out with the deer and coyotes but ride the trail. I have been pleased with this purchase and what I got with it .You get what you pay for so there will be upgrades in both bike but was a good choice for a first bike

Great light, durable aluminum frame. I like the EZ fire shifters as opposed to gripshift. Great value for the quality Shimano components you get. Good, quality bike for beginners (like myself) who don't want to spend a lot of $ for a bike they don't need (yet.) Nice color and I like the subtle touches like the black spokes, which make the bike look more expensive than it is.

Front InSync fork seems to be OK so far, but I am upgrading to a Judy C which has longer travel and is adjustable. The plastic pedals definitely suck...those will eventually be changed.

Great for beginners who want a quality bike for a low cost.

Old Trek Mountain Track 800.

It is a good price for a decent bike. The frame is pretty good.

The pedals are bad. The Shimano components aren't that good. The fork is a brand I have never heard of, and doesn't seem to do that much except slam down and bottom out when I do about a two and a half foot drop.

This is a good bike for anyone who just rides around town or like in a little nature park. I wouldn't recommend doing any drops over 3 or 4 feet. It's alright, but I'm getting a Jamis xlt 1.0. This is a great all around bike for someone who isn't jumping off cliffs yet.

This bike takes a lot of abuse. I thinks its a great bike for the price. Even though I will be upgrading soon I'm keeping this bike as a backup (And for guests)

Pedals are plastic, InSync shocks are ok but RockShocks would be better.

Great fist mountain bike.

Department store junk.

Trek 4300 Mountain Bike Review: Is it worth it?

trek mountain bikes 4100

Looking for a reliable and affordable mountain bike that can handle rugged terrain? The Trek 4300 might just be the bike for you.

As a mountain bike, Trek 4300 is built to take on any adventure. Thanks to a durable aluminum frame, wide range of gears, and powerful brakes.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the Trek 4300 mountain bike, its features, and what makes it stand out from the competition.

Read on to find out if the Trek 4300 is the right mountain bike for you.

Trek 4300 Mountain Bike At A Glance

Trek 4300 is a hardtail mountain bike with a lightweight and sturdy Alpha aluminum frame, which makes it easy to handle. While the Marlin 5 is made for trail riding, it’s also versatile and can double as a commuter bike.

trek mountain bikes 4100

The Shimano drivetrain and powerful disc brakes offer great versatility on all types of terrain. While the front suspension provides excellent balance and stability on rougher roads or trails, ensuring smooth rides.

It also comes with double-walled rims and puncture-resistant 26×2.0″ tires, making it a reliable choice for trail riding.

Trek 4300 is the perfect combination of affordability and quality, which is a great choice for beginner riders looking to hit the trails.

  • Sturdy and lightweight aluminum frame
  • Responsive brakes and smooth shifting
  • Comfortable riding position
  • Adjustable saddle and handlebars
  • Complex 3X drivetrain
  • Small 26-inch wheels

Unfortunately, this bike has been discontinued, but Trek has impressive newer models with better designs which are excellent alternatives to the 4300 Trek mountain bike.

We recommend Trek Marlin 5 and Schwinn Traxion as great alternatives, you can scroll down to see our brief review of these bikes.

Trek 4300 Mountain Bike Features

Frame and fork.

First things first, the frame is a crucial component of any bike. In the case of the Trek 4300, it’s made of aluminum, which is a popular choice due to its durability, affordability, and lightweight.

In fact, the original 4300 model used Trek’s Alpha Aluminum frame that’s tough enough to handle rugged trails with ease. As the model progressed, Trek introduced the Alpha Gold Aluminum material for the frame of the later versions of the 4300.

This updated version has a more aggressive race geometry for speed, with internal cable routing for durability, and rack mounts for versatility.

You’ll also find that it has a replaceable derailleur hanger. Now, these upgrades made the bike more versatile and allowed it to handle a wider range of terrain.

Moving on to the fork, the Trek 4300 is a classic hardtail mountain bike with a front fork. This means that the front wheel is equipped with a suspension system that can absorb shocks and vibrations, making for a smoother ride on moderate terrain.

The suspension fork has 70-100 mm travel, depending on the specific model, and it’s designed to handle mountain trails. However, it’s important to note that the suspension fork isn’t long enough to handle descents on rough trails.

So while it can certainly absorb some bumps, it’s not enough for really difficult trails or downhill riding. But don’t worry, this bike can still take a lot of abuse. After all, it’s a mountain bike, and it’s designed to handle dirt trails.

Gears and Brakes

Gears and brakes are some of the most important components of a mountain bike, especially if you plan on hitting tough trails or climbing hills.

Let’s take a closer look at the gear and brake systems on the Trek 4300 mountain bike.

In the first few generations of the Trek 4300, you could find a 3x8spd drivetrain with 24 gears.

But if you’re looking for something a bit more efficient, the later models of the Trek 4300 were fitted with the Shimano Acera M390 9-speed drivetrain. This gives you a wider range of gears for better control on hard trails.

Now, let’s talk about brakes. If you carefully look through all the different versions of the Trek 4300, you’ll find that some of them had rim brakes and some others had disc brakes.

The older models were fitted with rim brakes, while the later models featured the Shimano M395 hydraulic disc brakes, which gives a much better braking power at a great price.

Wheels and Tires

Most mountain bikes we see now have 29-inch wheels, but the Trek 4300 had 26-inch wheels and 26×2.20 tires, which actually are very agile and will quickly pick up speed.

In later models, these tires were improved to be puncture resistant and could withstand increased tire pressure.

We consider bigger wheels to be better for mountain riding, but small wheels aren’t that bad either because they are more agile, tend to accelerate faster and will easily move around tight corners. And these features are great for technical riding.

trek mountain bikes 4100

But the bigger 27.5 and 29″ wheels actually provide more stability and comfort, which is why they are now preferred for mountain biking.

Despite the small wheels, the double-walled rims and 32-spoke design of the Trek 4300 are pretty solid and tough enough to withstand years of abuse on the trails.

At the end of the day, the wheels and tires on the Trek 4300 are a great combination for riders who want to tackle technical terrain and need a bike that can handle quick acceleration and tight cornering.

While the market may be shifting towards larger wheels, the Trek 4300 is still a great option for those who value nimble handling and puncture resistance.

Saddle and Handlebars

The saddle is an important component of any bike, especially when it comes to mountain biking.

While the standard saddle on the Trek 4300 may not be the most comfortable, the 31.6mm seatpost offers plenty of adjustment for a customized fit.

You can even upgrade the saddle to one that suits your preferences for maximum comfort.

trek mountain bikes 4100

The handlebars of the Trek 4300 are a different story, though. Made from durable alloy, these handlebars are built to withstand the rigors of off-road riding.

With a 31.8mm diameter and 15mm rise, the handlebars provide a comfortable and stable grip while you ride.

The stem of the Trek 4300 is also designed for both comfort and control. With a 31.8mm clamp diameter and a 10-degree rise, the stem ensures a comfortable riding position while keeping you in control of the bike.

When you combine the Bontrager Riser handlebar and the Bontrager Approved stem on the Trek 4300, you get a comfortable and stable ride.

Size and weight

When it comes to finding the right fit, the Trek 4300 Mountain Bike has got you covered. With a wide range of frame sizes available, from 13″ to 22.5″, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your body type.

Actually, you may find sizes ranging from 13, 16, 18, 19.5, 21.5, 23.5″. But since these bikes have been discontinued by Trek, finding them in the exact size you want may be a challenge.

One thing to keep in mind is that the bike weighs around 28.2lbs (12.8 kg), which might not make it the lightest bike on the market. I believe this is due to the front fork, which adds weight but also adds extra shock absorption for a more comfortable ride.

However, this bike is sturdy enough to support riders up to 265 lbs of body weight.

Ride quality and performance

The Trek 4300 Mountain Bike offers fun and confident rides on the trails, whether you’re hitting the trails or cruising around town.

While it’s considered an entry-level mountain bike, don’t let that fool you. It’s a reliable bike that can be used for commuting, leisurely rides, or for hitting some challenging trails.

trek mountain bikes 4100

The comfortable riding position and triple chainring setup make it easy to tackle steep hills and rough terrain. Plus, the high-quality suspension system keeps things smooth and comfortable, no matter what kind of surface you’re riding on.

Trek 4300 has durable components that are built to last, so you don’t have to worry about things breaking down quickly.

The responsive brakes and smooth-shifting gears give you complete control and make riding this bike a breeze. And, even in wet or muddy conditions, the disc brakes offer reliable stopping power.

One of the best things about the Trek 4300 is its versatility. While it’s certainly a capable mountain bike, it’s also a great choice for commuting or everyday riding.

Best Trek 4300 Alternatives

As Trek 4300 mountain bikes are now discontinued, you cannot buy them brand new. However, Trek has a range of trail bikes that offer superior build quality and performance.

These models are more advanced and come at a higher price point than the budget options available from brands like Schwinn and Mongoose, but the investment is worth it as the quality is unmatched.

In my opinion, the Trek Marlin 5 and Schwinn Traxion are great alternatives for the Trek 4300 mountain bike.

Trek Marlin 5

trek mountain bikes 4100

Trek Marlin 5 is a trail mountain bike that’s built to gracefully handle daily adventures on rough terrains. It has a lightweight aluminum frame with a 2×8 drivetrain for smooth riding and shifting and powerful hydraulic disc brakes which provide fast and precise stopping.

While the Marlin 5 is made for trail riding, it’s also versatile and can double as a commuter bike. This bike has a stunning frame with internal routing for the brake and shift cables, which can extend the lifespan of your wires by shielding them from the environment.

It’s the perfect bike for new trail riders and comes in seven frame sizes to fit riders of all heights. Marlin 5 is elegant and comfortable, with a ton of features that are typically reserved for more pricey bikes.

Schwinn Traxion

Schwinn Traxion Mens and Womens Mountain Bike, 29-Inch Wheels, 24-Speed Shifters, Full Suspension, Mechanical Disc Brakes, Blue/Grey

The Traxion MTB is equipped with a remarkably solid aluminum full-suspension frame that easily picks up speed and maintains it very well.

This bike provides comfortable rides and handles bumps well, regardless of where your trail adventures take you. Thanks to the wide knobby tires, sturdy double-walled aluminum rims, and a superb trail-taming Schwinn suspension fork.

The 24 speed shifters also ensure fluid gear shifting, which makes for a fun and pleasant riding experience. In addition to that, the mechanical disc brakes lock into place instantly when applied, and this ensures precise and efficient stopping.

The wheels have all-terrain tires and alloy rims for strength and low weight. Plus, you can easily adjust the height of the saddle using the quick release seat post to get your best fit.

Finally, is Trek 4300 MTB a good buy?

The Trek 4300 mountain bike is a reliable and versatile bike that can handle a variety of terrains and riding styles.

With its durable aluminum frame, wide range of gears, and powerful brakes, this bike is a great choice for both beginners and experienced riders.

Trek 4300 offers a solid balance of performance and affordability. And if you’re looking for a reliable and budget-friendly mountain bike, the Trek 4300 is definitely worth considering.

You likely won’t find a brand-new Trek 4300, but the alternative options we included above are great choices too.

Restoring a MTB- TREK 4100 ALPFA

  • Add to quote

I'm looking to restore a Trek 4100 Alpha I found for 30 dollars. It needs work!!! I want to find someone who might have old parts laying around that would fit this bike like good set of shifters and brake components maybe even an upgraded set. And of course for a really cheap price as I haven't been employed for the last 16 months. Our biking season is coming in my neck of the woods. But anyway I don't want a donor bike because I will only eventually try to build that too. Even if you have advice on what to look for I would really appreciate it.

The first question I have is whether you are able to take everything apart and put it back together? A neighbor brought me a bike that had been sitting out in the rain (which always ticks me off) that someone gave him. You may not need to replace everything just to get it rolling again, but you have to be able to take it apart to see what can be cleaned and re-used and what has to be replaced. By apart I mean hubs, bottom bracket, headset, etc. Another problem may be what basic bike tools you own or have access to. You will most likely need cables, tires, tubes, brake pads and a chain, but if you can clean up the rest of it and get is greased/lubed you may be able to get it to work. I don't know if the fork works (rusted?), if it doesn't you may have to pick up a cheap rigid. If it is stuck and won't compress you kinda already have a heavy rigid, but if it collapses at the wrong time while riding it will not be a pleasant experience. John

Thanks John, My goal is to fix as much of the the things I can on this bike but your right the front shock is now rusted rigid. Is that gas and can it be taken apart without much danger. And also I would like to upgrade the gear shifting components to rapid fire like on my Trek 830. I really never liked the twisting kind of shifter.

So, anyone have any parts. I'm still looking!!!

Everybody's right, I'm afraid. Those parts are usually thrown away or donated to a bike kitchen. You could try there. Good luck.

illfixit said: God dammit, I never dreamt this post would rise up so many sensitive feelings about fixing an old bike, holy ****. I'll find another source as to find my parts. And the beginner comments please I've been riding mountains for 40 plus years from New England to AZ and have won several mtb races. I thought there was a bit more backbone in my fellow riders, apparently not. So please ask your mommies for some warm milk and be carful of the pole in the basement as you prepare for your next adventure. And remember don't for get to wear your protection and your sippy cup of water so you don't get hurt and dehydrated. As for you John, disregard this reply and thanks for the direction I don't know how you stand it here!!!Signing off... Click to expand...

That thing could be salvaged, but you aren't going to get that fork apart, and it isn't even worth saving. If that came into my shop, I'd be expecting at the MINIMUM to replace all the cables and the cable housings, perhaps even the chain. Put as little effort into that thing as possible, it is the equivalent of taking an old rusting Pinto that's got weeds growing out of it, and getting the engine to just turn over.

Cables, chain, and a good bit of elbow grease, and I'd ride that thing. I had my Y33 sitting outside for probably a solid 2 years. Just stupid on my part, but it was out there for a long time. Fork paint is badly faded, chain was so badly rusted it would not move. Rear hub very, very rough. Took it apart for warranty on the frame, and I have been able to make almost every part usable again. The wheels are almost perfect, front and rear XT derailleurs are fully usable. Bottom bracket was fine. Cassette cleaned up and looks like new. Deore V brakes are being used on my brother's hardtail, as well as the brake levers. The shifters were broken and junk anyway, so we didn't even mess with them. My RST Mozo Pro fork was in rough shape, but after pulling it apart, removing the old grease and all of the water in it, it works like a nearly new 19 year old fork! The tires were completely destroyed, and I had to hack away the weeds that had encased the entire rear wheel. It was a sad, sad, sad sight.

I'm sure we will all prosper from the full retelling of his unfortunate implosion, so it is posted for posterity...

Trek Roscoe 24

Trek Roscoe 24

Roscoe 24 is a mid-fat kids' mountain bike designed to build confidence on the trail. It takes cues from the adult Roscoe, but this ride was built from the ground up for kids. 2.8" mid-fat tires, a 1x drivetrain, and a wide-range cassette make Roscoe the ideal bike for little rippers who want to build skills and have a ridiculous amount of fun keeping up with Mom, Dad, or an older sibling. Fit for riders 51-59" tall. It's right for you if... Your little shredder is ready to hop off the neighborhood streets and onto the trail, and you want to get them started the right way with a real-deal mountain bike that builds skills and confidence from the outset. If you're looking to teach your little one the wisdom of the trail, there's no better teaching tool than Roscoe. The tech you get A durable Alpha Gold Aluminum frame with a sloping top tube for added clearance, 24" wheels with mid-fat 2.8" tires for added traction and stability, a 1x8 Shimano drivetrain with a wide-range cassette for hills and technical sections, mechanical disc brakes, and loads of thoughtful details borrowed from adult MTB tech, like a closed front dropout and a tucked-in rear brake caliper so when kids drop their Roscoe it doesn't mean an automatic trip to the shop for a replacement part. The final word Give a kid a Roscoe and you'll make a mountain biker for life. Mid-fat tires and a wealth of kid-specific design details make this bike the perfect introduction to the trail. If your little one is ready to tag along when you hit the singletrack, this is the kid-friendly set-up that's made to build confidence, skills, and a healthy obsession with the world's greatest activity. Why you'll love it - There's no family outing as fun as a trail session, and Roscoe is the ideal kids' bike for building great memories - This isn't a small adult bike—it's built from the ground up for kids, by people who know exactly what works for them and what doesn't - When you're learning to ride, simplicity is best: a 1x8 drivetrain lets kids focus on keeping the rubber side down - The kid-specific frame geometry has a sloping top tube that makes it easier to hop on and off - The rear brake caliper is tucked into the frame to help prevent damage from laying the bike down

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
