Trek Circuit bib shorts review: Good for 2.5 hours

Proof that it's possible to find good-quality bib shorts that don’t cost a fortune.

Trek Circuit Cycling Bib Short

Cyclingnews Verdict

You might consider a higher-quality chamois if you regularly spend longer than two and a half hours on the bike. Otherwise, the Trek Circuit bib short offers quality construction and the right fit for a wallet friendly price.

Value pricing

Bluesign certified and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX tested

Low-profile chamois keeps the bulk down

Chamois has a definite time limit

Fabric is a bit heavy

You can trust Cyclingnews Our experts spend countless hours testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

Almost every cyclist needs a pair of quality bib shorts. It is one of the first things that new cyclists need to purchase. To that end, our list of the best cycling shorts is one of our most popular buyers' guides. In recent years we've also added a second list covering the best cargo bib shorts for those that prefer to add a bit of storage to their bibs. There are lots of great options between the two lists but when it's time to pick something, the price will be an issue.

If you want to have a good time on a bike, you will need to be comfortable but does that have to cost a fortune? American brand Trek brought a new option to market this summer and it seems to be using it as an opportunity to say comfort and quality don't have to cost a fortune. Our goal is always to offer a wide range of options for every cyclist so we spent time in the Trek Circuit Bib Short to see how they compared to the best. If you are looking for a new pair of bib shorts that cost a bit less, keep reading to see what we think of this new option.

Trek Circuit Cycling Bib Short rear view

Design and aesthetics

The whole point of the Trek Circuit cycling bib short is to offer an entry-level option; the first pair of bib shorts for the casual cyclist. Take a look at them though and there's nothing obvious that gives away the design brief.

The pattern isn't a complex one but it's also not one that has any obvious issue. At the end of each leg is a strip of fabric. It's not elastic, but rather the same material as the rest of the bibs use with the addition of silicone gripper dots on the inside. The design follows a theme that repeats in every aspect of these bibs. There are no aero claims or claims about incremental upgrades from past designs. Instead, you've got a well-trodden design that you'll find if you look at a variety of other bibs from a variety of companies.

In the case of the Trek Circuit bibs, that bottom cuff uses a flat-locked seam at the attachment point to the two panels that make up each leg. One panel sits only on the outer thigh and carries a reflective "Trek" wordmark. That panel ends early as it connects to another small side panel above it. The rest of the leg uses a single panel that covers the inner thigh, lower abdomen, and wraps up. Connecting the two legs is a single seam, without flat-lock stitching, splitting the garment in two as well as a low back panel that also sits centrally.

As the lower section gives way to the straps, you'll find an edged seam. Often this is a place where brands use a raw-edged fabric that leads seamlessly into the strap. In this design, Trek has switched away from the fabric of the rest of the bibs. Instead, there's a very simple elastic that leads up the front of the torso and over the shoulders. Just over the crest of the shoulders is where the elastic gives way to mesh fabric.

For the chamois in this piece, Trek uses a proprietary design referred to as the "Elite inForm Chamois." Officially this is a dual-density design but from a functional standpoint, it's as simple as it gets. The useful padding consists of two saddle-shaped pieces that remain the same density throughout. There is a second density in the overrun areas and up through the front but this isn't in an area you'll be relying on for protection. Particularly in front, it's there to keep modesty, not to pad the saddle.

Performance

When you pull on the Trek Circuit bib shorts, they feel good and the fit is accurate to other brands. It may lean towards the roomier side but I didn't have any doubts about my usual sizing. The legs aren't overly tight and the height of the front cut is exactly where I like to see it. You can notice the lack of flatlock seams if you inspect these but as you pull them on they certainly aren't objectionable.

The same is true of the straps, the elastic is simple in its design and of the type that can fray at the edges over time, but they're comfortable, and their width is just right to spread the pressure out and the placement over the shoulders feels exactly as you'd want it to.

The fabric itself seems somewhat similar to that of the Giro Chrono Elite line of bib shorts. Both Trek and Giro are providing a market for recycled plastics by using them in the creation of the nylon they use. They are also both Bluesign approved, which is a promise of a safe production chain, and Trek also adds STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX which certifies the safety of the final product. Those similarities in the production would seem to lead to a similarity in the end result. There's a heaviness to it that is perhaps subtle but also noticeable in comparison. It's not entirely unpleasant but it does suggest that the hottest days would be best served by a different pair of bibs.

When it comes to the chamois, in an unusual move, Trek's product description page for these shorts specifically says "for rides up to 2.5 hours / 35 miles / 56km."

The first time I tested them, I hadn't read those instructions. It was yet another rainy day, so I planned a big ride on the indoor trainer - five and half hours in the end - and I knew it would be the perfect test.

As the headline of this review states, it's here that I accidentally found Trek's stated limit when, after about two and a half hours, the discomfort began. I have experienced much worse in this regard, and there was no outright bruising, but it was definitely getting uncomfortable, and as perhaps expected, riding the next day in the same bibs was even less pleasant.

In this case, Trek is not only unusually upfront about expectations, but also perfectly accurate. Stay under their recommended limit and the lightweight pad does a decent job.

The Trek Circuit bib shorts are not the most sophisticated bib shorts on the market. The fabrics are a little heavy and the chamois is only going to work for shorter rides. As long as you understand the limitations though, the experience is extremely good for a product that costs around half (to a third) of the more premium options on the market.

Not everyone needs their bib shorts to last beyond a couple of hours. If you are just getting started in cycling and want to see what bib shorts are all about, or your rides are kept under that mark, Trek is offering a great solution. They look great, they feel pretty good, and they do exactly what they say they will. When you find your rides starting to exceed what these are capable of, there are more expensive options waiting for you.

Trek Velocis Bib Shorts Review

Jason Mitchell

This year, Trek launched a small lineup of environmentally-conscious and subtly-branded kits. Their styling, fabrics and construction offer classic looks and versatility look good together or with jerseys or bib shorts from other brands. Here, we’ll dive into the new Trek Velocis Bib Shorts after testing them on road, gravel, MTB and indoors.

Trek Velocis Bib Shorts Features:

  • Pro inForm Chamois – Trek’s most breathable chamois
  • Lightweight, breathable fabric offering compression and comfort
  • Low profile bib straps with high elasticity
  • Raw edge leg cuffs for seamless compression through hip and leg
  • Premium silicone leg grippers
  • UV protection 50+
  • 10.8″ length
  • A bluesign® product and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® tested
  • MSRP: $144.99

Trek Velocis Bib Shorts Review

Velocis = versatile bib shorts

For 2022, the Velocis Bib Shorts got an overhaul and a new name. These redesigned bib shorts are now more eco-friendly (uses 65% recycled material) and offer quality performance. To me, a good pair of bib shorts has to make a strong first impression. Length, compression, cuffs, straps and chamois are noticeable right off the bat. Regarding all those aspects, the Trek Velocis Bib Shorts impress. The fabric feels taut, but is still stretchy enough for natural movement. Leg length is also excellent (not too long or too short). And, the straps are wide, soft and comfortable — providing the proper tension to allow everything to situate just perfectly.

With that extra compression and grippy silicone leg grippers, you will need to do a little extra movements to get everything in place. Once there, the chamois sits well and the whole package feels great — with or without a summer base layer. The bib straps do pull the lowers nicely and keep everything in place.

Trek Velocis Bib Shorts Review

Getting in and out of the saddle, the chamois never gets in the way, nor does the exterior fabric snag on any saddles tested. Plus, all your man parts stay put and don’t get in harm’s way with those movements either.

The Pro InForm chamois is good for 3+ hours (as Trek states), but there are better ones for riding 50+ miles. I also have the Trek Circuit Bib Shorts in review and the Pro InForm chamois is noticeably better than the Elite InForm chamois used there (if you’re comparing the two). That said, it breathes well and does provide reliable comfort within it’s intended use. Overall, the cut of the bibs and the leg grippers do make these bib shorts almost disappear because they just plain work.

Trek Velocis Bib Shorts Review - Simple Branding

Keep in mind that these are a completely new design for 2022, not just a rebadged Velocis from last year’s Bontrager line.

Fit: At 5’11” and 173 lbs, I’m wearing the size medium.

  • Love the muted styling
  • Added compression over less-expensive bib shorts
  • Good quality cut and fabrics overall
  • Great chamois for it’s intended use
  • Increased use of recycled material
  • Chamois could provide more comfort on longer rides

The Bottom Line: Trek Velocis Bib Shorts

Whether Trek continues to grow the Trek-branded line and discontinues the Bontrager brand for clothing remains to be seen. But, you’ll be pleased with the Velocis Bib Shorts as an affordable, comfortable pair of bibs for all-around use.

TREK MTB APPAREL REVIEW

Review and Photos by: Cole Gregg and Emma Wooldridge

The MTB apparel market has seen brands come and go in recent years, with some new brands stealing thunder from the OG legacy brands – enter the Trek MTB Apparel range. Trek decided to hit back and take the dive into producing riding gear, and the result is a line of subdued, sustainable mountain bike apparel. Knowing the resources and dedication Trek has for developing top-tier products, we were eager to get some laps in while testing out the new line of Trek MTB Apparel.

Trek is launching with Male, Female and Youth-specific kits, all with a focus on being kind to the environment while still tough enough to stand up to those unwanted dirt naps. All of the main body fabrics across the ranges carry the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification that signifies they do not contain environmentally harmful substances, and are primarily made from recycled materials. In the Trek MTB Apparel lineup, they have carried their classic “Evoke” and “Rhythm” names over to their apparel, with the Evoke line offering all-round trail apparel and the Rhythm line offering Aggressive Trail apparel for “harsher rides”.

The Evoke Mountain short is the shorter option of the two in the Trek MTB Apparel range, with an 11” inseam for guys and a 10” inseam for the ladies. The shorts main body fabric is made up of 86% recycled Polyester with a healthy amount of stretch. The Evoke shorts come with a removable chamois with plenty of cushion that is made from a mix of 74% recycled Nylon and 26% Spandex. The side panels are 77% recycled nylon and 23% Spandex. For pockets, you get 2 standard front pockets and one rear zippered pocket. Offered in sizes XS – 2X, there are plenty of options for all body types. And if you are in-between sizes, there is a velcro strap built in allowing for more adjustment.   These shorts with their use of recycled materials save between 12 and 21 plastics water bottles worth of material depending on size and gender! The Evoke Short is offered in Black and Dope Taupe (tan/orange’ish) colorways for both men’s and women’s models with both male and female versions priced at $124.99 at the time of launch.

The Rhythm Mountain Short is the longer, more traditional gravity-style short in the Trek MTB Apparel range, which will extend down over your knee pads. The woven outer shell is made from 88% Recycled Polyester and 12% Spandex, saving between 23 and 25 plastic water bottles worth of material with each pair. Same as the Evoke shorts, these are offered in size XS – 2X in both Male and Female cuts, with a daisy chain waistband adjustment that works remarkably well. For pockets, you get two extra-deep front pockets and one zipper side pocket large enough for today’s giant smartphones or a handful of snacks. There are also laser cut ventilation holes to keep the temps down on those long climbs. Did I mention stretch? Even with the amount of recycled material used, Trek was able to retain a two-way stretch in the fabric allowing for plenty of on-bike mobility. The Rhythm shorts are only offered in Black, and retail for $99.99.

Trek went with the casual approach for shirts, using a Tech Tee instead of the classic jersey. With neutral colors and subdued branding, these shirts are a win no matter what brand of bike you pedal. Built with drirelease yarn for a cotton/poly blend, the Tech Tee has a UV 30+ rating for those mid-summer scorchers. These Tech Tees are made from 85% recycled Polyester and 15% cotton, saving 33 – 35 plastic water bottles in material.

Also new for this drop is a series of fitness shorts focused for those off the bike training sessions. Both the men’s and women’s shorts come in at a 9.5” inseam. Offered in two different colors for $99.99. Just like the technical riding gear these shorts are made from a mix of recycled materials, saving 15 – 17 plastic water bottles.

MENS:

Both the Evoke and Rhythm shorts out of the box feel great in your hands, the material feels durable while still retaining plenty of stretch. While I did not get the chance to test their durability (thankfully) I have no doubt these shorts will last when it comes to impacts. The two-way stretch is super comfortable and not limiting in motion on the bike. As far as the Tee’s go, I feel right at home in them, they quickly have become some of my favorite riding tees. I am a big fan of the off-white color option in particular.

Looking at the updated sizing chart for the Trek MTB Apparel, I opted for the small shorts when I am usually a medium. With that said, most mediums I swim in and must have the waste adjustment synched ALL the way down. The Rhythm shorts fit bang on with all my different liners, the length was solid covering my knee pads when pedaling. I stated this above but the stretch on these is awesome. It was great to have a zippered pocket for my phone but one on both sides would have been a nice bonus. During the test period I found myself grabbing them out of the closet not only to get time in them for this review, but rather because I genuinely felt at home in them. Paired with the Evoke tech tee it’s a solid subdued comfortable day in day out riding kit.

When it came to the Evoke Shorts the fit was a bit tighter but still acceptable. If your weight fluctuates alot throughout the year it may be worth sizing up. Since I have been the same true 30” waste for years now, I felt comfortable going with the small. My gripe with the Evoke Short is that they are a little too short in the legs. I am an abnormally hard body shape to size for and I need to take that into consideration on reviews like this. My inseam is nearly 36” with a 30” waste, very weird I know. Ultimately for aggressive trail and park riding shorts these would not be my pick, although my girlfriend would say otherwise haha! Gravel rides and daily drivers is a different story. The fit and shape of these shorts when off the bike are stellar – these will for sure be getting some use this summer paddle boarding. As far as riding goes, they are not my style. If you enjoy a fit with shorts above your knees this is a stellar option. The chamois from the Evoke Shorts worked great when paired with the Rhythms. I am not too picky there, they just worked and became something that was not thought of when out pedaling.

The Evoke Tech Tee was everything you could ask for in a shirt. Personally, I like the small logo Trek opted with not only on the tee’s but the entire line of shorts. At 6’1” tall I opted for the large. I probably would fit better in a medium if we are getting super specific but in a riding tee, I want it to be loose fitting allowing for plenty of room to move around in. I am thin with broad shoulders so the medium may have been a little cramped up top. The off-white color is rad and having a closet with probably 95% black or gray tops, this was a welcomed addition that I’m going to enjoy for many rides to come.

WOMENS:

Since I work in the environmental industry, I was excited to see yet another brand put an emphasis on sustainability. Trek didn’t just slap on some earthy colors to a basic material to make you look good – they sought fabrics made out of recycled materials AND received certification that the fabrics don’t contain any harmful substances. Carrying the STANDARD 100 label means that Trek wants you to look good and feel good when you’re wearing their apparel.

Honestly, when you’re out riding in the Evoke Tech Tee and Mountain Bike shorts, you’d never guess you’re wearing water bottles (approximately 50 for women). Even on the first real spring day of the year, the Tech Tee was heavy enough to feel protected from the sun and the trail, while also not causing me to sweat profusely. The Evoke shorts were smooth and sturdy, with added ventilation at the knees that doubled as a fashionable flare. The combo felt like the perfect spring outfit.

I generally have to pay close attention to any brand’s sizing, as I seem to bounce around between multiple sizes. I came out of my winter hibernation with a 28-inch waist, and although this will fluctuate and drop slightly during full riding season, I saw that I was spot on for a size Small in Trek’s sizing even with my normal variation.   The removable padded liner fit perfectly. It wasn’t too snug and it wasn’t wiggling its way down. The chamois has a really clean look – smooth, all black exterior with the interior red padding. I enjoyed the repeating Trek logo around the waist band. The liner was easily removable, with a small button snap in the Evoke shorts to attach the chamois to with its tiny loops. The chamois truly felt wonderful to the touch and out on short pedals, but it isn’t my go-to. It literally did not sit right with me, but this likely isn’t a universal issue.

The Evoke Tech Tee fit nicely around my broad shoulders, but I did feel like I was swimming in it. It was fairly long and roomy on my short stature. It’s not that it was boxy or baggy on me, it’s that I felt it could be slightly more fitted for my body and give some shape (it does say semi-fitted). The sleeves hit at a flattering spot on my arms, slightly above the bend. Although it didn’t fit my specific body in my ideal way, it was comfortable enough to spend a long afternoon in the sun attempting several new rock features. I opted for the Olive color in the Tech Tee, mainly because I feel my wardrobe needs something other than black and olive is such a neutral color. The olive meshed well with the black shorts and I’m excited to be able to pair it with khaki-colored bottoms at some point (which the Evoke shorts do come in Taupe). I wasn’t a fan of the large lettering. If it were up to me, I’d have the same small Trek logo that you can find on the black Tech Tee.

So much stretch! The Evoke Mountain Bike shorts were playful and forgiving. With a super clean style and one small natural logo on the back, these will certainly be worn all summer long. The ventilation slit at the knee gave a nice breeze and a flattering shape. They fit slightly large on me, but the adjustable waistband worked well. It also didn’t cause any weird bunching in the crotch area when the waistband was tightened. If I were on the smaller end of the size Small in Trek’s chart, I’d probably order the extra-small, as these have plenty of stretch. The waistband is soft and doesn’t dig in anywhere, but will likely soak up a lot of sweat and dirt over time. These shorts rise slightly above my knee pads when I’m sitting or pedaling (10-inch inseam). For me, I didn’t feel like I had a good spot to store my iPhone. The front two pockets aren’t zippered and although they could fit the phone, it just didn’t feel secure enough for my preference. The back pocket that’s zippered can fit some important keys or IDs, but won’t fit a standard cell phone. The Evoke shorts are sporty and perfect for trail days at the local mountains, but not quite designed for bike park days. This seems to be in alignment with Trek’s intentions for the apparel line.

Cole rarely serves as the durability tester for anything but shoes – it is mainly my job to see if apparel products will stand up against body slams to the ground and brushes with tree branches. I can tell you that Trek hit the mark with “trail-tough” apparel. Just from touch alone, I could tell that the Tech Tee could handle more than most of my biking tops. And while the shorts are deceivingly soft, they can withstand the occasions where you send it a little too much.

  • what does the real form of the Boulevard Ring in Moscow look like;
  • what tricks did the Russian government used to save the houses and buildings from bombing during the World War II;

Shatner pitches "Weird or What" in Cannes

We will find in May if William Shatner’s new sitcom Bleep My Dad Says gets picked up, but one Shatner show that is definitely going on the air is Weird or What , a new documentary series Shatner is co-producing an hosting. The show description press release make it sound a bit like Leonard Nimoy’s In Search Of :

in Weird or What? William Shatner will investigate and analyze all that is weird in the world, including everything from paranormal phenomena to weird and wonderful creatures, from medical oddities to mysterious disappearances, and bizarre natural disasters to mystical monster attacks.

The show has been sold to Discovery Channel in the US and History Channel in Canada. Today Shatner is at the MIP TV convention in Cannes today selling  the show to the world. Variety reports that production company Cineflix has successfully sold the show to "nearly every territory". At the event Shatner described the show:

We’re looking at weird circumstances but we’re presenting them in a light-hearted, jaunty way. We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.

Chris Pine headed to Moscow as Jack Ryan

Last year Chris Pine, the new Kirk, was tapped as the new Jack Ryan, to head up another big Paramount franchise. New details have emerged on this next film based on the Tom Clancy character. Pajiba reports the following story synopsis for the next Jack Ryan film (now with the working title of "Moscow"):

The movie will pick up with the Jack Ryan not long after his stint in the Marines, before he’s joined the CIA, while he’s a Wall Street stock broker, an occupation that will play heavily into the script. In the Clancy novels, Jack Ryan was a successful financial analyst in Baltimore for Merrill Lynch. In the new movie, he will have transplanted to Moscow to continue his financial advising, not for Merill Lynch (which has been absorbed by Bank of America), but for a billionaire employer. It is that billionaire employer who eventually sets Jack Ryan up to take the fall for terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. After that, Ryan must race against time to clear his name, reveal the terrorist plot, and save his wife, who has been taken hostage by the billionaire employer.

No word yet on when "Moscow" will go in front of cameras or be released, but probably following Pine’s work on the next Star Trek .

Nimoy’s last day as an actor? + honored as space inspiration

Spock Prime, Leonard Nimoy has recently stated he is ready to back into acting retirement. This would mean his last job as an actor would be reprising his role as William Bell in the season finale  JJ Abrams’ Fringe . And yesterday, Nimoy tweeted " Finishing work on Fringe today. Really good experience. The two parter will air in May." Today he tweeted that his back home. Speaking of Twitter, in just four days TheRealNimoy has picked up almost 33,000 followers.

But Mr. Nimoy is still out and about. On Thursday Leonard is being honored by the Space Foundation at the National Space Symposium in Colorado. Nimoy is being presented with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach award for being an inspiration to people around the world "to explore the wonders of science, space, and technology." And a reminder, next Friday the original Spock is headed to the Vulcan, Alberta, Canada (the official Star Trek capital of Canada) to unveil a bust of himself, and then he is off to the Calgary Entertainment Expo for the weekend.

Quinto on NYSE floor

Finally we come to the new Mr. Spock, Zachary Quinto. The actor is currently in New York  filling out his resume as a producer an actor in Margin Call , a film set in the world of the stock market. Last week Zach tweeted this pic of himself with his Before the Door production company partners.

While he has been in New York, Quinto has been a frequent Twitterer, sending gems like this one last Thursday:

the t-shirt i was wearing today smelled. so i bought a new t-shirt. now it smells. already. why you got to be so smelly t-shirts?

But no worries, Zach was cleaned up all nice by the next night…

Jeez, that photo of Nimoy is fierce! :D

I cant wait to see nimoy and the shat at vegas will miss them when their gone

Shats new show sounds fun–long as they dont make fun of believers cuz that could be bad n sad–

Like a jaunty “In Search Of…”

If I see one more word with quotes around it I’m going to “scream”.

Has Shatner seen Star Trek 11 yet?

How really cares. I don’t. maybe I did at one point. But I don’t now. Let it go. For crying….out….loud

“We’re not taking ourselves too seriously.”

In contrast to some of today’s Hollywood actor wannabees, Shatner can afford to not take himself too seriously. :)

Nimoy looks like an old, and very wise Spock on that photo. Acting retirement surely would be a waste of material…

#6 No, he’s busy having a life. :))

The two shows should be combined to form a show called “Weird Fringe”, and in the first show William Shatner could focus on mysteries of Mr.Spock’s bowl haircut.

Wow whats up with Quinto’s nerdball galsses….First we see a hobo Spock and now dork Spock.

ZQ’s follow up tweet is hilarious!

Nimoy always look cool…kinda badass…you wish Fringe would throw a evil Spock beard on him! Shat looks kinda pudgy…a jolly old type… I was really hoping Mr Nimoy would make it in the new MI movie as Paris…maybe a evil Paris with a beard!

Jack Ryan before Star Trek or after???

From everything I’ve seen of Ben Affleck, he’s pretty impressed with himself. Chris Pine will be 1000 times better than him.

Quinto needs a fashion adviser.

I think Quinto should do a music video as Bilbo Baggins

Alec Baldwin was a great Jack Ryan. Tough act to follow (and I’m a big Ford fan).

16. Yeah! xD lol

Quinto is always dressed stylish, cool and modern- I love it. Zach, just rub some patchouly on yourself and get back to work please!!!!!!!! And Bleep Jack Ryan!
