Gibraltar is famous for being the last remaining British colony in mainland Europe. Ceded by Spain to Great Britain in the Treaty of Utrecht of 1713, the three-square-mile peninsula was an important British military base in the western Mediterranean Sea for many years.

Its strategic importance waned with the 20th century, and today Gibraltar's status draws mixed reactions. Spain wants it to be Spanish, though many Gibraltarians want to remain British. The United Nations lists Gibraltar as a Non-Self-Governing Territory.

For travelers, Gibraltar is home to the Rock of Gibraltar, cute monkeys, and some great places for cheap shopping.

Border Control: Do You Need a Passport?

Passports are required for all visitors to Gibraltar, except EU nationals with valid national identity cards. As a general rule, if you need a visa for the U.K., you will for Gibraltar, too.

Gibraltar's border controls are strict, and lines can be tediously long whether you're crossing overland from Spain or flying to Gibraltar International Airport (GIB). 

Guided Tours From Malaga

For the most trouble-free visit to Gibraltar, take a guided tour. There are several guided tours from Malaga, Spain to Gibraltar. These involve bus transport to the border, where you will be dropped off (with your guide) and accompanied into Gibraltar.

After exploring Gibraltar all day, your driver will be waiting for you. This is infinitely more convenient than having to book a bus from the Spanish side, as you can never know how long the border crossing will take.

Some guided tours are billed as "shopping tours," which can often be a no-thrills shuttle service to get you to and from Gibraltar. There are also "sightseeing tours," which usually include a tour of the Rock of Gibraltar and a visit to see monkeys.

How to Get There by Bus and Train

If you're heading from Gibraltar into Spain, Spanish buses will take you as far as La Linea de la Concepción, the town on the Spanish side of the border with Gibraltar. From there, you can walk across the border into Gibraltar. Coordinating your bus with the time-consuming border controls is logistically awkward.

The bus is run by Portillo and takes about three hours from Malaga to Gibraltar (very slow compared to a guided tour bus).

If you're traveling by train, you can go as far as Malaga, where you'll need to switch to four-wheeled transportation.

How to Get There by Car

Driving from Spain to Gibraltar is not recommended—a car can be a hassle on The Rock. Take a bus instead. But if you must drive, the 130-kilometer drive from Malaga to Gibraltar takes over one-and-a-half hours, traveling mainly on the AP-7, a toll road.

The Costa del Sol separates Gibraltar from Malaga, so you can stop along the way at beach towns, or take a detour via Ronda to see the spectacular El Tajo gorge. However, this adds quite a lot of time to your journey and would require overnight accommodation in either Ronda or Gibraltar.

What you need to know before traveling to Gibraltar

You must hold a valid passport to enter Gibraltar, and it must be good for your stay.

With the United Kingdom no longer in the European Union, Gibraltar is no longer a part of the EU Common Customs Territory. 

This means that the amount of some goods (tobacco and alcohol) you can take into and out of Gibraltar is limited.

When returning to Spain, you should declare any duty-free goods to Spanish customs officers.

If you are from a country in the European Union, all you need to show is a valid national identity card. 

All other nationalities, including citizens of the United Kingdom, must show a valid passport. If you need a visa to enter the United Kingdom, the same applies to Gibraltar.

BEST OPTION: How to get from Malaga to Gibraltar

The best way to travel from Malaga to Gibraltar is by car, taking the AP-7 motorway. Having your own vehicle or renting one allows you to move at your own pace and gives you the ability to stop off in places like Marbella and Estepona. – Check out car for rent here .

From Malaga to Gibraltar by Bus

• Price : Either 19€ or 15€ one-way depending on what bus you take
• Schedule : From Malaga buses depart at 08:30, 11:30, 13:15, and 14:30. From La Linea buses depart for Malaga at 07:45,11:45, 12:35,16:30, and 20:00

If you want to know how to travel from Malaga to Gibraltar by public transport, the only option for getting from Malaga to Gibraltar is the bus.

There are no buses between Malaga and Gibraltar, but you can travel from Malaga to La Linea and then walk across the border. 

Spanish bus company Avanza has five buses a day from Malaga, Estación de Autobuses (Malaga Bus Station). – Check tickets here.

The first bus leaves Malaga at 08:30 and arrives in La Linea at 10:50. The last bus back to Malaga departs La Linea at 20:00 and arrives back in Malaga at 11:05. 

Tip : During the summer seats sell out fast, so be sure and book your ticket well in advance to avoid disappointment.

From Malaga to Gibraltar by Car

Driving is easily your best option given the short amount of time you would have in Gibraltar if you traveled from Malaga to Gibraltar by bus. 

Also, by driving, you can stop off in places like Marbella and  Estepona. If you do not have a car of your own, consider renting one from the car rental companies at the airport. – Check out car rentals here

From Malaga or Malaga Airport, get on the Autovía de Circunvalación de Málaga/MA-20 via the ramp in the direction of the airport, Torremolinos, Algeciras, Cadiz.  

Merge onto the AP-7 motorway and stay on the highway until exit 119. Continue on CA-34 to your destination.

Tip : Driving and finding a place to park in Gibraltar is a big hassle; plus, with the UK no longer in the EU, border checks take a long time. 

Better to park your car in the Spanish town of  La Linea de la Concepción and walk across the border. Expect a total journey time of around 1hr 30 mins.

From Malaga Airport to Gibraltar

If you want to take a bus from Malaga Airport to Gibraltar, follow the instructions above.

There is also a direct bus from the airport to La Linea, from where you can walk across the border into Gibraltar. 

There are no train to Gibraltar from Malaga Airport, too.

The buses are operated by Avanza and depart Malaga Airport at 08:35, 13:40, and 18:05.

From Malaga Airport to Gibraltar by Train

There are no trains between Malaga Airport and Gibraltar.

You can, however, take a bus from the airport to Gibraltar or the central bus station in Malaga.

From Malaga Airport to Gibraltar by Bus

• Price : 10€ or 16€ one-way, depending on which bus you take.
• Schedule : The buses are operated by Avanza and depart Malaga Airport at 08:35, 13:40, and 18:05. Buses from La Linea to Malaga Airport depart La Linea at 07:45, 11:05, and 12:35. 

Here are instructions on getting to Gibraltar from Malaga by bus:

Avanza Grupo operates a bus from Malaga Airport to La Línea de la Concepción three times daily. 

You can purchase tickets from the kiosk near the exit, pay the driver on the bus or buy them in advance here.

Tickets cost €10 – €16 one way, and the journey takes 1hr 55mins. The bus stop is located just outside the Malaga airport arrivals hall.

Taxi from Malaga Airport to Gibraltar

If you want to know how to go from Malaga to Gibraltar by taxi. Know that the taxi rank at Malaga Airport is located outside the arrivals hall.

All Malaga taxis are metered and accept payment by credit card. 

Depending on whether or not it is a weekend or holiday and what time of the day it is, you can expect to pay between 162€ to 195€ to get from Malaga Airport to Gibraltar.

During the peak summer months, you may have to wait up to an hour to get a taxi. 

A much better and less expensive option is to rent a car from Costa del Sol Airport Malaga to the Gibraltar-Spain border with car rentals services like Kiwitaxi 

Prices start from 189 $ for an economy car, and after you’ve entered Gibraltar you need a local taxi to drive you to your final destination.

How to get around Gibraltar

Despite only occupying 2.6 square miles, Gibraltar can be pretty arduous as getting too many of the attractions is an uphill slog. 

With no hop-on-hop-off-bus, you can still get around the Rock using red public buses from Casemates Square. 

With the cable car to the top of the Rock and entry to the nature reserve expensive, not to mention the long queues in Summer, the best way to see Gibraltar’s attractions is by taking a taxi tour. 

The two-hour tour, including admission to the attractions, costs £22 ($28) per person and takes you to the  Pillar of Hercules, St Michaels Cave, the top of the Rock where the apes are, and the Napoleonic tunnels.

3. Gibraltar Cable Car & Dolphin Watch

One of the must-do things when you travel to Gibraltar for the first time is to go to the top of the Rock, and the easiest way to get there is by cable car. 

Built in 1966 by Swiss cable car manufacturer Von Roll Holding,  the cabins can hold 30 passengers and an attendant.

The journey up to the station takes six minutes, and once at the top, you have incredible views of Spain and the Rif Mountains in Africa.

Cable cars run every ten minutes throughout the day and cost 34€ ($37) for adults and 22€ ($24) for children; the ticket includes entry into the Nature Park and all the attractions at the top of the Rock.

Going on an eco-friendly Dolphin tour is a great way to see these marine aquatic mammals up close. 

The Bay of Gibraltar has two species of dolphins, the short-beaked common and striped dolphins. 

It is possible to see bottlenose dolphins migrating whales, and the endangered Loggerhead turtle during the summer.

4. Excursion to Gibraltar from Malaga

From the rock of Gibraltar, you can see two continents (Africa and Europe), three countries (Morocco, Spain, and England), the Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean Sea!

Without a doubt, it is a unique place to visit.

Moreover, Gibraltar is the only place in Europe where you can find free-ranging monkeys living in their natural habitat. You can climb up the rock and take pictures with them.

To end your day in Gibraltar, you can explore the tunnels from the Second World War, the colorful caves of San Michael, the Skywalk, and many other surprises that this rock has to offer.

Are you planning to travel from Malaga to Gibraltar by bus? In that case, you’re at the right place!

As a local expat living near Malaga, I have plenty of experience with the local transport options and have visited Gibraltar myself.

In this article, I have put together the most detailed guide you’ll find on your transport with the Malaga Gibraltar bus.

Malaga Gibraltar Bus: Transport Details

If you’ve decided you want to travel to Gibraltar by bus, this article will give you all the details and info you will need.

If you have some specific questions about this journey, I have added an FAQ question at the end of the post, but feel free to leave a comment if your question hasn’t been answered in here.

Can You Get to Gibraltar from Malaga by Bus?

Yes, but NOT directly to Gibraltar. Because it’s a foreign territory, the buses only run to the last town by the borders called La Linea.

From the bus station of La Linea, you can take a short walk towards the crossing and enter Gibraltar on foot, or take the local Gibraltar taxi from there. More on that later.

Before you plan your trip, please make sure that you check the legal requirements for entry on the local government website for Gibraltar .

As of spring 2023, you can enter Gibraltar with a valid EU passport without any additional paperwork, or even a valid national ID card (EU citizens only).

Where to Get the Bus?

The buses to Gibraltar leave from the main bus station in Malaga , which is right next to Malaga Maria Zambrano train station.

The station is really dated and not well equipped, so if you want to do some shopping ahead of the journey, get some souvenirs or have lunch before you leave, you’re better off crossing the road and using the train station.

The train station is fairly big and modern and resembles a small shopping mall with a big train station attached to it.

The Malaga Gibraltar Bus departs at the following times:

• 8.30 am – arrival 10.50 am
• 11.30 am – arrival 14.15 pm
• 13.15 pm – arrival 15.40 pm
• 14.30 pm – arrival time 17.30 pm
• 15.45 pm – arrival 18.00 pm
• 17.30 pm – arrival 19.40 pm
• 22.25 pm – arrival 22.40 pm

Please note that the times are subject to change, in the summer months they normally add more connections due to the demand.

To get the most accurate information about departures, I always recommend checking the booking system at Avanza website as there you get the most up-to-date information.

Bus Ticket Prices & Where to Buy Them

Many articles about travelling to Gibraltar will direct you to third-party websites to purchase your tickets (through their affiliate links). I would advise against using these companies as they often take a commission on the transition and you might end up paying more than you need.

To get the tickets, head over directly to the Avanza website which is the company operating this route. They have a very simple booking system which is also available in English.

On this page , enter Malaga and La Linea and your chosen travel date.

The tickets to Gibraltar start from 14.19 euros one day, per person, and the price will be higher in the summer months and other peak travel times.

Once you entered your details, you will get a QR code with a digital ticket that you just need to show to the bus driver, along with your valid ID or passport.

Luggage is normally transported free of charge and included in the ticket, but if you’re travelling with excessive luggage or dog etc, you might need to pay extra.

Even if you’re travelling off-season, it’s better to get your tickets online as that will guarantee you can get on the bus if there are more people boarding at the station. During summer months, this route may be quite popular so you may need to get your tickets a bit in advance, if you had a specific date and time you wanted to travel.

Malaga Gibraltar Bus Journey Time

As you can see from the departure times above, the shortest journey time to Gibraltar from Malaga is 2 hours and 10 minutes, and the slowest buses will take you there in 3 hours.

The faster buses make only three stops on the way – Malaga Airport, Marbella and Estepona.

The slower 3 hour buses also stop in other destinations between these cities, like Torremolinos, Benalmadena , Fuengirola, San Pedro and others.

Bus Facilities & Practical Tips

The Avanza buses are fairly modern and well-equipped, I have had no issues with them. They normally have a toilet for longer journeys, and some also have a USB charger on the seats.

On some journeys, a wifi is also available.

For longer journeys, seat reservations will be also possible when you’re booking online.

What To Do Once You Get to La Linea

The bus will drop you off at La Linea bus station, marked on the map below.

After you get out, you have the option to walk to the border crossing or take one of the taxis from the station and drive there. The taxis cannot cross the border, so you will have to get off and take a Gibraltar taxi from the other side.

The walking distance from the bus station to the crossing is approximately 600 – 700 meters, so it would only take you about 10 minutes to walk there.

What To Do Once You Get to Gibraltar Border

There are two lines going through the border, one for cars and one for pedestrians. There are clear signs navigating you through passport control.

I was pretty happy that I did not drive to Gibraltar in a car, because the lines can be quite extensive. The pedestrian traffic, on the other hand, looked much more manageable.

You walk through passport security, the same as you would in an airport, and exit on the other side. After that, you have to walk through the airport runway, which connects the crossing with the city. If there is a plane landing, you will see a red light at the traffic lights and will have to wait before you cross.

Right after the passport control you will also see some tour operators offering trips around Gibraltar, and you can also take a taxi to town from there.

If you’re going on foot, for me the walk to town took about 20 minutes, depending on where you want to get to.

Once you’re ready to head back, I have listed the departure times from La Linea bus station below. Remember that you have to still go through passport control on your way out, so leave plenty of time ahead of your bus departure, to ensure you can get to your bus on time.

• 11.05 am – arrival 13.30 pm
• 12.35 pm – arrival 15.00 pm
• 15.30 pm – arrival 17.50 pm
• 16.30 pm – arrival 19.25 pm

Hi, I am trying to book bus tickets from Malaga to La Linea on Feb 20th, but the Avanzabus website says there are no buses available on that date. It doesn’t even show La Linea as a destination to choose from. Does the bus not go there anymore? Thanks!

The coastline from Malaga to Gibraltar is gorgeous and has some fantastic beaches. You could easily spend the day beach hopping your way from Malaga to Gibraltar!

The drive between Malaga and Gibraltar, without stops, is roughly 2 hours. The roads are a bit windy in places but it is a nice highway and the signage is good.

Malaga to Gibraltar by Bus

You can take a bus from Malaga to the border of Gibraltar, but not into Gibraltar. 🚌

The bus station that you would go to is La Linea – this is short for “La Linea de la Concepcion” which is the border municipality on Spanish soil next to Gibraltar.

From La Linea bus station, it is a 6-minute walk (500 meters) to the Gibraltar Passport Control Station.

The bus operator Avanza makes 8 round trips a day from Malaga to La Linea.

The bus ride is 2 hours and 25 minutes . You can book tickets directly on their website – in the top right-hand corner, you can change the language to English.

The bus station in Malaga is Málaga Estación Autobuses. This station is about a 20-minute walk from the historic section of Malaga but can also be reached via Uber or public transport.

How much is the bus ticket from Malaga to Gibraltar?

On average, the bus ticket is about €15 to €20 one-way .

Malaga to Gibraltar by Train

Currently, there is no train route that goes directly from Malaga to Gibraltar or La Linea.

It is best to take the bus if you are looking for a public transport option.

Malaga to Gibraltar by Taxi or Uber

Another option for traveling between Malaga and Gibraltar is to take a taxi or an Uber. If you are at the Malaga airport, there will be a queue of taxis to grab one easily. 🚕

Elsewhere in Malaga, you can ask your hotel for help ordering a taxi or use the app to call an Uber. A ride will cost roughly €160 .

Day Trip Options from Malaga to Gibraltar

There are options to take a day trip from Malaga to Gibraltar.

Day trips to Gibraltar can be done year-round. The climate in both regions is very mild so it is an excellent trip to take any time of year!

If you want to fully explore Gibraltar, we suggest choosing an overnight stay instead of a day trip, unless you are short on time. There are plenty of fun things to do at night in Gibraltar!

Two days are usually enough to see the majority of what Gibraltar has to offer, whereas a day trip may only allow you to visit some of the incredible sites in Gibraltar.

Tips for Traveling from Malaga to Gibraltar

The first thing to plan for is changing from Spain, an EU (European Union) country, to Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory that is not part of the EU.

⚠️ This means that you will go through border control when changing from Spain to Gibraltar.

Border Control for Gibraltar – Do You Need a Passport?

Yes – you do need a valid passport to travel to Gibraltar. The exception is EU nationals who are in possession of a valid national identity card, they can use their ID card. 

Your passport must be valid for your entire stay.

We saw differing information on if your passport just needed to be valid for the stay or for the stay plus 6 months, so make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months post your visit to be safe.

Border Control for Gibraltar – Do You Need a Visa?

It depends on where you are traveling from! European Union citizens and United States citizens currently do not need a visa to visit Gibraltar , but they are at liberty to change that whenever they want.

To double check you do not need a Visa before you travel to Gibraltar, check their website !

Border Control for Gibraltar – What to Expect

If you visit Gibraltar via cruise/ferry or by flying in, you will go through border control at the cruise port/airport.

If you are crossing the land border from Spain, you will go through border control at the Gibraltar Passport Control Station .

You have the option to park your car in Spain and then walk to Gibraltar, going through the pedestrian border control along the way. This tends to be the fastest route through border control.

If you want to drive onto Gibraltar, you will stay in your car and go through border control in your car.

Either way, you need to have your passport ready and answer any questions the border control officer asks.

When you leave Gibraltar and reenter Spain, you will go through the same process.

Border Control for Gibraltar – How Long Does it Take

The land border can get really backed up , especially on holidays and weekends. At times, it can take a few hours to cross the border.

If you can, we recommend going outside of peak hours (weekdays during work hours) to avoid delays. Additionally, you can check their website to see current wait times.

The other delay can come from flights . Currently, you walk or bike across the airplane runway once you go through border control to enter Gibraltar.

The Kingsway Tunnel , which underwent 14 years of construction, has now been opened to the public. This tunnel runs beneath the runway and serves to alleviate vehicle traffic congestion.

When airplanes are arriving or departing, the pedestrian and bicycle traffic is stopped completely for about 20-30 minutes.

Currency in Gibraltar

Gibraltar’s official currency is the Gibraltar Pound (GIP) which has the same value as the British Pound.

That being said, most businesses accept credit cards and some accept Euros (just expect any change to be given back in GIP).

How to Get Around Gibraltar

Overall, Gibraltar is pretty small. The territory and city is only 2.6 square miles.

We found it easy to walk the main part of the territory , the area from Grand Casemates Square to the Gibraltar Botanical Garden. There are a few hills but in general, the area is relatively flat.

To see the top, we took the cable car up to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar and then slowly walked down, going by the sites like the Moorish Castle and War Tunnels.

We 1,000% recommend this – it is the best way to see everything on the rock and a fantastic way to spend a day in Gibraltar.

We did use the car, however, to visit the southern part of the territory and the Europa Point Lighthouse . If you didn’t have a car, you could use the Gibraltar buses to venture there pretty easily.

Driving in Gibraltar

Driving in Gibraltar is easy – unlike the rest of the UK , they do not drive on the left side of the road . This makes it an easy transition when driving from Malaga to Gibraltar.

There is, however, limited free parking . There are street spots, but they are sometimes reserved for the residents. Be sure to look for signs!

Alternatively, there are paid parking decks you can leave your car.

How Long to Visit Gibraltar

For a small piece of land, there is a lot to see! We recommend at least 2 full days . This allows for 1 day to explore the main territory and 1 day to explore the rock.

To fully explore and experience all that Gibraltar has to offer, we suggest spending at least 2 full days engaging in the various activities and awesome Gibraltar tours available.

• Cable car ride – The Gibraltar Cable car offers a scenic ride to the top of the Rock where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Gibraltar, the Skywalk, and the famous Barbary macaques. Taking the cable car is preferable to using a taxi or bus tour due to the magnificent view and the absence of traffic. Tour buses tend to wait in long lines to reach the destination sites.
• Free City Center walking tour – Although small, Gibraltar is rich in history . During the tour, your guide will share information about the territory’s history and take you to the various sites where significant events took place. Don’t forget to tip your guide!
• Upper Rock Walking Tour – The top of the rock is home to the ruins of the Moorish Castle, the Mediterranean Steps, and the famous monkeys !

• St. Michael’s Cave – During World War II, the cave was utilized as a military hospital. Currently, it functions as a natural auditorium featuring an impressive light show which highlights the cave’s amazing natural characteristics. It was Kelsea’s favorite attraction on the rock!
• Dolphin watching tour – Love seeing animals in their natural habitat? The Strait of Gibraltar is home to 3 species of dolphin , so be sure to go on a dolphin-watching tour!
• E-Bike to the top of The Rock – want to go to the top of the Rock but the cable car is not your preference? Take an E-bike instead! The motor will take the strain out of biking uphill.

• War Tunnels – You can visit the World War II or Great Siege Tunnels in Gibraltar to learn about and experience what soldiers endured during wartime. Although the Rock has 52 kilometers of tunnels, we recommend walking down them for 15-20 minutes before turning around.
• Europa Point Lighthouse – At Gibraltar’s southernmost point is a lighthouse that was constructed in 1841. On days with good visibility, it is possible to view the northern coast of Africa.

• Grand Casemates Square – This is the main square in Gibraltar, where there are many restaurants and shops. Additionally, every Saturday at 12:30, there are reenactments of the Changing of the Keys.
• Bowling in a Historical Bastion – Gibraltar has many historic bastions on the perimeter of the city. This particular was has been restored and now is a very cool place to bowl !
• Gibraltar Gin Experience – visit Gibraltar’s only distillery to taste fine gin!
• Gibraltar National Museum – The museum of history features the remains of a 14th-century Moorish bathhouse and typically takes approximately an hour and a half to fully explore.
• Catalan Bay Beach – Our favorite beach is located on the eastern part of Gibraltar. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and relax!

The main center of Gibraltar is very walkable. Additionally, a great bus system operates on many routes.

We like staying at The Rock Hotel because it is located near the Botanical Gardens and the Cable Car. Additionally, it is not in the city center, making it quieter than the main area.

How to go on a day trip to gibraltar from malaga (updated for 2024).

You’ve spent a few days in Malaga, Spain and now you want to explore the surrounding area. How cool wouldn’t it be to cross a country border and explore the tiny peninsula of Gibraltar on UK territory?

To do this, there are a few things you need to know and it might feel overwhelming. But don’t worry, I’ve done day trips from Malaga to Gibraltar multiple times and will share everything you need to know here.

In this guide, I’ll go through how to get there by car, public transport, or organized tour, border control, and what to do and see on a day trip to Gibraltar from Malaga to make the most out of your trip.

Get ready for impeccable views, wild monkeys (hold on to your valuables!), and Moorish remains. For being such a tiny territory (of only 4 square kilometers!) there are surprisingly many cool things to do in Gibraltar .

With only one day in Gibraltar, you won’t manage to squeeze in everything, but you’re guaranteed an unforgettable adventure from start to end. So get ready to plan an epic Gibraltar itinerary.

Best time to go on a day trip to Gibraltar from Malaga

It’s perfectly possible to go on a day trip to Gibraltar from Malaga at any time of the year, but if you can choose the time of the year (and the weekday,) here are my recommendations.

Summer in southern Europe can get extremely hot, and Gibraltar and the Iberian Peninsula are no exceptions. If you can plan your trip from Malaga to Gibraltar outside the summer months, you’ll have a more pleasant experience than in the heat of the summer, which can reach 40 degrees celsius.

Especially the month of August is often sticky hot and with most of the Spanish taking their summer vacation, you’re guaranteed a large number of people will go for a day trip to Gibraltar during this month.

Besides the summer, weekends are usually busier than weekdays as Spaniards take advantage of their days off and you can meet a large number of people taking a Gibraltar day trip from Seville , Malaga, or Cadiz.

By the same token, it can be a good idea to keep track of the Spanish bank holidays (and remember that they move them to a Monday if they fall on the weekend.)

My favorite time of the year to visit Gibraltar is the winter and spring. That said, the autumn is just as good, I just usually find myself hiking at this time of the year.

How to go on a day trip from Malaga to Gibraltar

There are no trains from Malaga to Gibraltar, so you will have to use the bus or your own car unless you choose to go on an organized tour. Note that there are no parking options for motorhomes in Gibraltar.

I’ll go through the options here so that you can decide what works best for you.

If you plan on walking across the border, I highly recommend the Gibraltar Card which includes the bus to the city center, the cable car up to The Rock, and the Skywalk plus an entrance to all of Gibraltar’s main attractions.

Malaga to Gibraltar by car

Going on a Malaga to Gibraltar day trip by car is easy as you can travel in your own time and do stops along the way. Driving from Malaga takes between 1 hour and 40 minutes and 2 hours depending on the traffic conditions and the route you choose.

Taking the AP-7 toll road saves you a little bit of time, but will cost you. So if you’re on a budget, drive the A-7 instead, and save yourself the Euros. Note that the toll road will be considerably more expensive in the summer months than the rest of the year .

When you travel from Malaga to Gibraltar by car, you have two options. Either park at La Linea and walk across the border or drive across the border and park in Gibraltar.

I’ve always been warned against driving across the border because it is hard to find parking in Gibraltar. However, my personal experience after driving across the border various times is that I’ve always found free parking within a reasonable walking distance from attractions like The Rock.

Note that, as opposed to the UK, Gibraltar has right-hand driving, so you don’t have to worry about that.

Crossing the border by car or walking

Crossing the border with your car means you get in the queue and show your passport at the control boots. This is easy and carefree, though you might have to stand in a queue for a while so make sure you bring your favorite playlist to listen to while you wait or bring some cool games for the kids to stay occupied.

Walking across the border usually means a shorter waiting time to show your documents. Once you cross the border, you have to cross the Gibraltar Airport runway. There will be a red light if a plane is taking off or landing and a green light if you’re free to go.

The city bus no. 5 takes you to the city center or you can take the bus no. 10 straight to the cable car.

Bus from Malaga to Gibraltar

Taking the direct bus from Malaga to Gibraltar usually takes 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes. Avanza buses run several times a day and the earliest departure from Malaga is at 6:45 in the morning and the latest return leaves Gibraltar at 18:30.

Day tours from Malaga to Gibraltar

The easiest and most carefree way to go is by joining a full-day Gibraltar tour from Malaga with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel. There are several options including a local guide to show you around which will give you a better insight into Gibraltar and its history.

Here are a couple of my recommendations for top-rated day tours from Malaga to Gibraltar.

Note that private shuttles drop you off at the border and pick you up on the way back. Entering Gibraltar you will take a local bus and walk. Also, most tours don’t include tickets to the cable car etc.

If you want to explore Marbella and the exclusive Puerto Banus on the way to Gibraltar but don’t have a car, this is a great Gibraltar tour from Malaga option for you. The private car will pick you up and drop you off directly at your hotel in Malaga.

Once in Gibraltar, your private guide will talk you through the peninsula’s top attractions like The Rock, where you can take selfies with the wild monkeys (but be careful not to touch them or feed them and watch your stuff! They are wild animals and renowned for stealing,) the St. Michael’s Cave, and the Moorish Castle.

Gibraltar border control

Gibraltar border control is one thing that I always get a lot of questions about, especially after Brexit. The good news is that according to Skift , Gibraltar is negotiating to enter Schengen so that passport holders from these countries don’t have to show their passport or ID card to enter Gibraltar.

However, until negotiations are settled, you can expect long queues to enter and exit Gibraltar from La Linea. Sometimes I’ve experienced 2 hours in queue with car and others, it has only taken about 20 minutes.

There are about 1600 Spanish workers crossing the border daily to Gibraltar, so it’s recommended to go after the morning rush hours to avoid waiting with them (and making the queue longer for those who have to go to work.)

Needed documents for crossing the land border between Spain and Gibraltar

If you’re an EU, Schengen, or UK resident, you need to show your EU ID card or passport to cross the border between La Linea and Gibraltar.

Some nationalities need a visa to enter Gibraltar, though if you have a Schengen visa, you might use that. You can easily check if you need a visa or not and the required entry rules for you by entering your passport nationality HERE .

Remember to assure that you have a multiple entry visa so that you can get back to Spain again after your day trip to Gibraltar from Malaga.

What to do on a Malaga to Gibraltar day trip

As already mentioned, there’s no way you’ll manage to fit in everything there is to do with only one day in Gibraltar. Thus, I’ll list what I think are the most important attractions to visit on a day trip to maximize your Gibraltar one day itinerary.

Take the Cable Car to the top of The Rock

The cable car that goes to the top of The Rock is the perfect way to travel to the top when on a day trip from Malaga to Gibraltar as it saves you time compared to walking the steps (where, in my experience, you might be attacked by apes and have nowhere to escape.)

The cable car runs every day from 09:30 in the morning every 10-15 minutes. While the ride is only 6 minutes, you’re guaranteed spectacular views from the charming cable car wagons dating back to 1966.

See the views from The Rock of Gibraltar

The top of 426 meters high The Rock of Gibraltar offers breathtaking views of the port, the tiny peninsula, and the Spanish mainland. But if you turn around, you’ll also see Morocco on the African mainland across the Strait of Gibraltar.

On a sunny day, you’ll get a postcard-perfect image of the entire Spanish coastline behind the iconic rock. Make sure you take a picture to memorize this view for the rest of your life.

I love how Gibraltar is so small that from the top, it looks like you can hold it all in the palm of your hand. Yet there’s so much to this rocky peninsula.

Take a picture of the monkeys of Gibraltar

Gibraltar is the only place on the European continent where you’ll see wild monkeys. Originating from Morocco, these imposing animals have become iconic to Gibraltar and one of the main tourist draws.

Malaga day trips to Gibraltar are often mainly planned because travelers want to see the monkeys, and rightly so. But keep in mind that these are wild animals, and I’ll say it again:

• Don’t feed the monkeys (actually keep all food or snacks inside a locked bag)
• Avoid touching the monkeys
• Watch your belongings
• Don’t chase the monkeys
• If the monkeys approach you, stay calm and avoid confrontation – they can bite!

Yes, I have seen monkeys steal tourists’ bags, ripping them apart, and grabbing snacks from inside them. Yes, I have seen monkeys attack tourists. And yes, I’ve seen tourists trying to feed them to get them to come close to get a selfie with them before happenings like that.

Sometimes the monkeys might jump on your shoulder because they feel like it, so don’t freak out, but keep the above in mind so you get a positive experience. Because though they’re cheeky creatures, they’re totally adorable!

Have lunch at Mons Calpe Suite

On top of the Cable Car stop, there is a perfect restaurant for lunch with views of the Rock and the Spanish coastline. When visiting Gibraltar in one day, this is the best option to not waste time going into the town center looking for a place to eat.

Visit St. Michael’s Cave

After lunch, head to the spectacular St. Michael’s Cave where you’ll immerse yourself in the stalagmites and stalactites that have been built over millions of years inside the cave.

Legend says that the cave has no bottom and priorly it was believed that the cave was the mouth of an underwater tunnel across the Strait of Gibraltar reaching Morocco on the other side.

Inside the main chamber of the cave, you’ll find a massive stalagmite that has fallen off the cave ceiling, probably thousands of years ago shaking the entire Rock of Gibraltar.

Colorful lights are used to light up the inside of the caves giving it a light show spectacle.

The St. Michael’s Cave is open every day from 09:00 to 19:15, though last entry is 30 minutes before closing time.

Visit the Moorish Castle

Gibraltar’s Moorish Castle was originally built in the 1100s but was later destroyed during the Spanish re-conquest 200 years later. The tower, known as the Tower of Homage, was later rebuilt and together with the remains of the fortified walls, it towers above Gibraltar’s epic sea views.

Throughout the years, the castle has housed Dukes, protected the population against pirates, and served as a prison. today, it’s one of the most interesting historical sites in Gibraltar.

Opening hours are Monday to Friday: 09:00-19:15. The last admission is 30 minutes before closing time.

Stroll around the town center

If you have the time, round off the day with a stroll around the town center, walk down Main Street where you find several high-end British shops, and take a selfie in one of the red, British phone boots. Take a peek into old book stores, and have a coffee or a beer at any or the bars.

I highly recommend taking a guided tour with a local guide to see the main spots. A guide will also provide you with all the interesting history of Gibraltar’s old town.

One of the attractions of this tour is The Pillars of Hercules. At the Pillars you will enjoy the views of North Africa Morocco. You will see where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, this being the only entrance to the Mediterranean. You will be above Europe Point, the end point of Europe.

According to Greek mythology Hercules had to take on twelve tasks. One of these tasks was to bring the cattle of Geryon from the west to Eurytheus.

On his journey Hercules had to cross the Atlas Mountains. Rather than climbing over these mountains, he used his great strength to smash through them and as a result, he brought the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean together.

After he had achieved this task, the result was what is now known as The Pillars of Hercules. This became the Rock of Gibraltar on the northern side and Jebel Musa in Morocco on the southern side.

The next site is St Michael’s Cave. Which sees thousands of visitors a year wandering through its huge caverns with just a few steps and easy access. This amazing, natural phenomenon created by rainwater slowly seeping through the limestone rock, turning into a weak carbonic acid which gradually dissolved the rock millions of years ago. In 2021 St Michael’s Cave introduced a new lighting upgrade for the very best experience of the cave’s natural beauty, called The Awakening. Enjoy St Michael’s cave like never before!

Of over the 150 caves that have been discovered in the Rock of Gibraltar this is the most visited with over one million visitors per year. The cave is situated at over 300 metres above sea level.

In 1942 during the second world war blasting was in process inside this cave in order to allow for more ventilation. The cave was to be used as an emergency hospital. During the blasting, a discovery was made of a deeper system of caves which is now known as Lower St. Michael’s Cave.

The Awakening

In 2021 St Michael’s Cave introduced a new lighting upgrade for the very best experience of the cave’s natural beauty, called The Awakening. Enjoy St Michael’s cave like never before!

Top of the Rock Skywalk Glass Viewing Platform & Monkeys

Next, we will go to the top of the Rock, and there we will do 2 things: The glass viewing platform called The Skywalk, and visit the monkeys.

The Skywalk is a former military lookout transformed into a state-of-the-art glass platform and walkway giving spectacular views across the Mediterranean. An unbroken 360º panoramic viewpoint. Enter the 360º environment and get a feel for the freedom and exhilaration you will experience at The Skywalk.

From the Skywalk, several minutes’ walk and we will spend some time with our famous Monkeys at Upper Apes Den (The same height level as the cable) The Barbary Macaque Apes are the only ones to be found within the continent of Europe. They reside at the upper rock nature reserve of Gibraltar.

At present there are over 200 apes in 6 packs that roam through the upper rock. Legend has it that in 1942 the population of apes fell to just 7 and the Prime Minister of Great Britain (Sir Winston Churchill) ordered that the population of the apes be immediately replenished because as long as there are Barbary Macaques Apes on the Rock of Gibraltar it will remain under British rule.

From the top of the rock, we will drive to the north side of the Rock to visit the Great Siege Tunnels, something not to be missed. This site explains a lot of the history of Gibraltar under siege. The tunnels were carved out of the rock by hand during the Great Siege which took place between 1779-1783. This was done in order to defend Gibraltar against the Spanish and French forces who were trying to recapture Gibraltar from the British.

Whilst tunnelling it was decided that a horizontal hole be blasted in the rock face in order to improve ventilation for the workmen. On closer examination it was realised that a gun could be put in place to bear down on attacking forces.

Moorish Castle and Old Town of Gibraltar

On the drive down from the Upper rock Nature Reserve we will see the outside of the Moorish Castle, you will be able to see the history and battle scars due to cannon ball shots against the castle between the wars of the Moors and the Spanish. The Moorish Castle is a medieval fortification in Gibraltar which is made up of a number of buildings.

The Moorish Castle stands proudly on the Eastern elevation of the Rock, a proud symbol of the long and colorful history of the Rock of Gibraltar originally built in the 1160CE. It was ransacked by the Spanish between 1309 – 1333. This ‘Tower of Homage’ was rebuilt in the 14th century by Abu-l-Hasan. You’ll be able to look closely to see the cannon dents in the castle walls.

As we exit the nature reserve park we will drive through the old town of Gibraltar.
