U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing

What and where is the U.S. Bureau of Engraving & Printing?

The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing , founded in 1862, produces Federal Reserve Notes (also known as paper money, or U.S. dollars) for the Federal Reserve, our country’s central bank (note that coins are made by the United States Mint). The Bureau also produces Treasury securities, military commissions and award certificates, ID cards, invitations and an additional range of security documents for government agencies, making it the largest producer of government security documents in the U.S.

The Bureau has two locations: one in Forth Worth, Tx. and the other in, you guessed it, Washington, DC. The official address is 301 14th Street SW, Washington, DC 20228. The facility features two adjacent buildings, with the facade of the main building facing Raoul Wallenburg Place SW, the Tidal Basin and the Jefferson Memorial.

Money at U.S. Bureau of Engraving & Printing

What will I see on the tour?

The 40-minute experience will enlighten you on all things related to U.S. currency. The tour begins with an introductory film that details the function of the Bureau and its importance. Along the way, you’ll witness millions of dollars being printed as you stroll through the gallery that overlooks the production floor.

The tour also includes exhibits that dive further into the production of our national currency. There’s also a gift shop, open from 8:30 a.m. – 2:45 p.m., that features currency products for sale.

Watch real money being printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. ! This is a fun tour for all ages. You will see how U. S. paper currency is printed, stacked, cut, and examined for defects.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing also prints White House invitations, Treasury securities, identification cards, naturalization certificates, and other special security documents.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing does not produce coins. Coins are produced by the United States Mint. (Although the headquarters to the Mint are in Washington, D.C., the production facilities are located in Philadelphia and Denver. Tours of the Mint are given in those cities.)

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing was established in 1862. At that time, just six people separated and sealed notes by hand in the basement of the Treasury building. The Bureau moved to its current location just off of the National Mall in 1914. To keep up with the increase in demand, a second production location was set up in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1991.

It took a historical event to move me in seeking a memento here. Like many recent reviews, mine is not about the physical location of the business but rather an online experience in placing and receiving an order. With the recent issuance of multiple historical women of great achievements on quarters, I was particularly interested in one that has a local and cultural significance for me being a San Francisco women of Chinese descent, Anna May Wong. I asked my local banker to help in getting some coins for a keepsake as well as to gift to friends and relatives. He was only able to secure a single quarter and he got it through the security guard there despite requests in ordering some for me. I went online and accessed the U.S. Mint's website and tried to order some but received a bounce-back message that it was not available since I was not a returning customer. It mentioned that they would notify me if it became available. A month or so later, I received an email offering the opportunity to order now. The specifications were stated on a labeled coin bag ( https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=Oxwbv_aXSXDZPMsYvRe7pA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), that this was part of a 2022 special issue celebrating prominent American women. The Anna May Wong commemorative quarters ( https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=bTWVEsAW2LDqwyvyGHnwwQ&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), issued from the Denver location, were what I bought. I intended to share them with friends but, in trying, learned that they all beat me to the punch in getting rolls from a variety of friends or connections at local financial institutions. I am not normally a coin collector, the likely profile of those who had first shot of these special issues when they first came out. Will I buy another new issue? It'll depend on how much I value it emotionally and its availability.

Fantastic time. The agent was helpful and enthusiastic about the coins! I enjoyed the knowledge he shared and all the personal assistance! Make This Part of Your Washington DC Experience!! Thank You So Much!

If you are buying coins here, you are getting ripped off! I was told that this is the U S Mint DIRECT but the 3 people I spoke with were totally uninformed in fact they actually sounded completely uneducated by the way the responded. Everything I asked was followed with "I'll be more than happy to answer that" but they NEVER answered my questions???? All three were confused as soon as they answered the call. I have since found another source with prices OVER 50% LESS that what US mint.org is charging. Do your homework or get suckered!

Now we didn't get anything online, but we headed into the little store with several children and it was a great experience. They gave the boys unprinted penny's and the gentleman working there were fantastic.

Zero stars !!!!!!!! This was an awful experience. Today trying to buy the 2021 morgan silver dollar. Right at the time when the ordering window opened up i had the item selected and in my baskek. Then in the middle of the transaction the server went down on usmint.gov. when i got back in the server issue cost me & was robbed of the opportunity to purchace the coin. When the server came back up 5 mins after 9, the CC morgan was sold out. I restarted the tranaction with the remaining coin avalible. Again selected the coin added it to the basket and proceeded to check out. Then mid way through the coin that i had was riped away from me when i was in the middle of the transaction. Its not fair when your one of the first on the site and the bumped out due to the incomptance of the people running the site. I get it that there is a limited number of coins, but i was on the site at 9:01 am . ;-(

I'm still awaiting word on an order that arrived empty when it was delivered. Buyer beware.

My second purchase from the US Mint. I ordered the 2022 Silver Proof Set and a Purple heart coin. I only received the purple heart coin, but was told the entire order was delivered. The shipping box was uncompromised. There was no packing list inside. I felt lucky the customer service rep was able to refund my purchase and took my replacement order. One would like to believe the US Mint would have tighter security or even better quality assurance. Instead, I felt like they were trying to swindle me. I'm still waiting for the replacement coins, so we shall see how this plays out in the end. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE DELIVERY SIGNATURE OPTION for future purchases.

Customer service is very poor! They have not fulfilled our October order of 2020 Silver Eagles. They have not acknowledged or emails sent through their website or faxes. They have not been answering their phones or leave you on hold. When you are lucky enough to talk to someone, they promise to fix the problem but do not send email confirming the arrangement, then NOTHING! Can't add photos when you don't receive the product.

Photo of Casey S.

Ordered a coin, and first it took longer to receive than they said (of course they print the shipping but never shipped for a while), then when I received the item, it was damaged. So, I called, and nobody answers ever, voicemail and receipt suggest emailing. I email. No replies ever. Worst place. But hey- it's the government and this is how they usually seem to function.

I returned the proof set and when I inquired how long a refund would take, I was told 2-3 weeks. Terrible. Sending out a damaged coin at a high price and taking 3 weeks after the item was received back to issue a refund. Update: No refund after two full weeks and it is impossible to reach a customer service representative. I spent 2 1/2 hours on hold in three calls without reaching a person, I called and selected the option to have a representative call me back and not lose my place in the queue and they never called me back. I also sent an email that went unanswered.

Circled area is the damaged coin. It is on the coin itself, not the holder.

Circled area is the damaged coin. It is on the coin itself, not the holder.

I ordered a 2021 silver proof set which now costs $105 and has fewer coins than previous years. One of the coins has a ding on it. That should not ever happen. When proof sets cost $5 in the 1970s they never had a problem. I gave them two stars because they sent me a return label.

This is not a touring location this is just a retail outlet for government mined coins. This is the Headquarters for the mint. It seams to be just for administration but still needed a retail presence.

Stayed at the capital Hilton and used the gym. It is a commercial gym inside the Hilton. It has multiple levels separating the areas. Ample machines and equipment to suit most people. As a guest you get free entry is you a HHonors member. Has a good steam room and facilities. Used it twice and the only thing they need to work on is the friendless of the staff as I seen two and they were both totally uninterested.

My husband and I received a one night stay at the Capitol Hilton as a gift, along with massages at the Mint Spa located within the hotel. Immediately it was not your typical spa experience. You check in at the hotel gym front desk and they send you with a robe and slippers down the hall. There is no reception area to the spa. I found my way to a door and walked in to find my massage therapist waiting. I didn't see any other people inside of this hallway spa and it just seemed a little creepy. The massage room was nice and massage therapist was great, but definitely seemed like a makeshift spa - not what I would expect from a Hilton. When I checked out I asked the guy working at the gym front desk to charge the TIP ($20) to my credit card since the rest was a gift. I signed off on $20 but when my credit card bill came I saw that I was charged $125. I figured this was just an honest mistake and called the hotel to have the massage fee taken off of my card. When I called I was told to leave my name and number and someone would call me back. I waited days and no return call. I emailed the accounting department - no response. I have called back 5 times over the past 3 weeks and have always received the same message. "Oh no one is here right now who can help you but I'll have someone call you." Yesterday I asked to speak to the hotel manager and they would not direct me there becuse they are "a separate entity". Tomorrow I plan to bypas the spa and call the hotel directly. I am sure the manager would like to know how hotel guests are being treated by this "business" within the hotel. It is a sketchy business at best. Find a reputable DC spa instead!

OK, I have yet to workout here, so I can not talk about class quality. I can say there is a large variety of them throughout the day, which is why I joined this club. Very clean gym and shower area, locker rentals available, towel service, laundry service, free wifi, and many other perks with certain memberships. Very modern facility and equipment. There is a pilates reformer studio, a TRX area, cycling studio, and much more. Therion gave the tour and run down of the place and all options and specials. He was very welcoming, thorough, and unlike any other gym representative I have ever dealt with before coming to Mint. There was no pressure to sign up and he seemed surprised that I was ready to sign immediately. If I have any additional questions, and believe me, I have already and will again, he is my go to guy and I recommend him to anyone who goes to that location and wants a good experience with no pressure involved. This is not a cheap club to be part of but after the experience of simply touring the facility and learning what my money gets me, it was my pleasure to commit and not feeling pressure or hounded to join was very refreshing. Thank you Therion!!!

U.S. Department of the Treasury

Secretary of the treasury janet l. yellen to travel to the people’s republic of china.

WASHINGTON – From April 3-9, Secretary of the Treasury Janet L. Yellen will travel to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for bilateral meetings and other engagements.

Secretary Yellen’s visit to China will build on the intensive diplomacy she has engaged in to responsibly manage the bilateral economic relationship and advance American interests. Following initial meetings with the PRC’s new economic team last July in Beijing, Secretary Yellen met with her counterpart Vice Premier He Lifeng in San Francisco, California, in advance of President Biden’s meeting with President Xi. At Secretary Yellen and Vice Premier’s direction, both sides jointly launched Economic and Financial Working Groups , which report to the Secretary and Vice Premier, and which have met three times.

In an April 2023 speech , Secretary Yellen laid out three principles guiding America’s economic relationship with the PRC. These principals continue to guide our engagement today. The United States proceeds with confidence in our economic strength thanks to our historically strong recovery and the investments the Biden Administration is making in America’s productive capacity. In the context of this relationship, America first seeks to secure our national security interests along with those of our allies and to protect human rights. Second, we seek a healthy economic relationship with China that provides a level playing field for American workers and firms. Finally, we also seek to cooperate where we can on key bilateral and global priorities.

During her engagements in China, Secretary Yellen will advocate for American workers and businesses to ensure they are treated fairly, including by pressing Chinese counterparts on unfair trade practices and underscoring the global economic consequences of Chinese industrial overcapacity. Secretary Yellen will also work to expand bilateral cooperation on countering illicit finance, which can drive important progress on shared efforts against criminal activity such as drug trafficking and fraud. In China, the Secretary will also engage her counterparts on critical work that benefits both the United States and China, as well as the world, including work to bolster financial stability, address climate change, and resolve debt distress among developing nations.

Trip Details

On Wednesday, April 3, Secretary Yellen will depart Washington, DC for Guangzhou, the People’s Republic of China. On Thursday, April 4, she will arrive in Guangzhou.

On Friday, April 5, in the morning, Secretary Yellen will hold a roundtable discussion with economic experts to discuss challenges and opportunities in the PRC’s economy. Secretary Yellen will then meet with Guangdong Governor Wang Weizhong. In the afternoon, Secretary Yellen will participate in an event with leading representatives of the American business community in China, hosted by AmCham China, and deliver remarks on the bilateral economic relationship. In the late afternoon, Secretary Yellen will begin extended bilateral meetings with Vice Premier He Lifeng.

On Saturday, April 6, Secretary Yellen will continue and then conclude a series of bilateral meetings with Vice Premier He. In the afternoon, Secretary Yellen will depart Guangzhou for Beijing.

On Sunday, April 7, Secretary Yellen will participate in a bilateral meeting with Premier Li Qiang. Later, Secretary Yellen will meet with Beijing Mayor Yin Yong. In the afternoon, Secretary Yellen will meet with students and professors at Peking University. In the evening, the Secretary will participate in a bilateral meeting with Finance Minister Lan Fo’an. While in Beijing, Secretary Yellen will also meet with leading Chinese economists.

On Monday, April 8, Secretary Yellen will meet with former Vice Premier Liu He of the People’s Republic of China. Later, she will hold a bilateral meeting with People’s Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng.

Norton Introduces Bill To Create Commemorative Coin To Honor Paul Laurence Dunbar

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — Today, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) introduced the Paul Laurence Dunbar Commemorative Coin Act to direct the Secretary of the Treasury to mint 50,000 five-dollar coins, 400,000 one-dollar coins and 750,000 half-dollar coins in recognition of Paul Laurence Dunbar, one of the first influential African American poets in American literature. The surcharge on each coin sold would benefit scholarships and similar activities of the Dunbar Alumni Federation, the alumni association for the historic Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School, the first public high school for African Americans in the United States. Norton is a Dunbar alumna.

"I am a proud graduate of Dunbar, a storied African American high school in our country,” Norton said. “It was the first college preparatory high school for African American students in the United States.

“Paul Laurence Dunbar was revered by Americans as one of the greatest African American poets in our nation’s history. Minting a coin in his honor would be particularly fitting since his poetry captured African Americans in their own terms no long after slavery, while also raising funds for worthy causes undertaken by the Dunbar Alumni Federation.”

Many well-known and accomplished African Americans have graduated from Dunbar. Among many notable alumni are: Edward Brooke, the first popularly elected African American to the U.S. Senate; Wesley A. Brown, the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy; and Robert C. Weaver, the first-ever Secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Dunbar Alumni Federation was organized in 2002 to provide scholarships and other financial support to students and graduates of Paul Laurence Dunbar Senior High School.

United States Mint Opens Sales for Alabama American Innovation $1 Coin™ Products on April 8

2024 American Innovation One Dollar Coin Alabama Uncirculated Reverse

WASHINGTON – The United States Mint (Mint) will open sales for rolls and bags containing the second American Innovation $1 Coin of 2024 on April 8 at noon EDT. The reverse (tails) design of the coins in these products recognizes innovation from the State of Alabama. The following packaging options from the Mint’s facilities at Philadelphia and Denver will be available:

“I am pleased to announce the release of the American Innovation $1 Coin for the State of Alabama,” said the Honorable Ventris C. Gibson, Director of the Mint. “The Saturn V rocket, designed and built at the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama was initially developed to support the Apollo program for human exploration of the Moon. We are honored to celebrate this major achievement with this coin.”

“Alabama is a state of innovators, and the Saturn V rocket perfectly exemplifies that. It was Alabamians who helped put man on the moon, and today, we remain committed to ensuring our country is not only on the forefront of space exploration, but innovation in all areas,” said Alabama Governor Kay Ivey. “We are proud to now see the Saturn V rocket displayed on this coin and are honored to have Alabama and her people represented in this special, commemorative way.”

To set up a REMIND ME alert for the Alabama American Innovation $1 Coin product options, visit the product detail page . Orders are limited to 10 items of each product per household for the first 24 hours of sales.

Introduced in 2018, the American Innovation® $1 Coin Program is a multi-year series featuring distinctive reverse (tails) designs that pay homage to America’s ingenuity and celebrate the pioneering efforts of individuals or groups from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Territories.

The Alabama American Innovation $1 Coin reverse design depicts the power and force of the Saturn V rocket lifting off with the Moon in the background. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “SATURN V,” and “ALABAMA.” United States Mint Medallic Artist Craig A. Campbell designed and sculpted the image.

The obverse (heads) of all coins in the American Innovation $1 Coin Program features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” The design also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation. Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Designer Justin Kunz created the design, which Mint Medallic Artist Phebe Hemphill sculpted.

Incused on the coin’s edge are “2024,” the mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

American Innovation $1 Coins are included in the Mint’s Product Subscription Program . Structured like a magazine subscription, this program affords customers the convenience of signing up to receive automatic shipments of products in a series.
