6 Questions About Tanzania Safaris With Zanzibar Add-on

Anthony Ham

Answered by

Anthony ham.

vakantie zanzibar safari

Why is a Tanzania safari and a Zanzibar beach holiday an ideal combination?

“Trips that combine a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar will be a special experience because it is easy to travel between the two, yet they span such a variety of worlds. The Tanzanian mainland has many different attractions that cover a range of activities. But above all else, it is famous as one of the best safari destinations on Earth. The incredible wildlife, with beautiful landscapes as a backdrop, fills national parks such as Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Nyerere (formerly Selous Game Reserve), Gombe and more. Hiking is also brilliant in Tanzania, from the ascent of Mt Kilimanjaro or Mt Meru to the lesser-known Usambara Mountains. Zanzibar couldn’t be more different. The island is a fabulous beach destination, with a stunning coastline and resorts to match. It’s also home to Stone Town, a glorious maze of hybrid African and Arab architecture where the streets fill with the smell of spices and the call to prayer. Being able to experience all of this on one trip is simply wonderful.”

What can I expect from a trip to Tanzania and Zanzibar?

“Combining your Tanzania safari with Zanzibar means spending as much time as you can in the fantastic national parks on the mainland, then flying directly onto the island of Zanzibar. How long you stay in each place, and the order in which you visit them (most people go on safari first), will be determined by where your greatest interest lies and how much time you have. But the flight between the two is just long enough for you to catch your breath in readiness for what comes next. On the mainland safari leg, expect to be thrilled by the abundant wildlife for which Tanzania is famous, although what you see will depend on which parks you visit. Most commonly, especially on a first trip to Tanzania, travelers prioritize the Northern safari circuit, which includes Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. On Zanzibar, you’ll need to make the difficult choice between how much time to spend on the beach and how much time you need to explore Stone Town: a difficult choice because they’re both such pleasurable experiences.”

How much will this tour cost?

“Costs vary greatly for trips that include a Tanzania safari and Zanzibar. As a starting point, expect to pay US$150 to US$250 per person per day for a budget safari, and upward (sometimes significantly upward) of US$400 per person per day for high-end luxury tours. A big variable when it comes to determining the cost of your trip is the level of luxury you would like to enjoy. Most often, this has to do with the accommodations you’ll be staying in. Another factor to consider is the season in which you’re traveling: the cost of high-season packages can be double that of low season. The length of trips is also something that will affect the price: the flight between the Tanzanian mainland and Zanzibar can be expensive, but its impact on the per-person daily cost will be less if you’re traveling for longer. The final main variable when it comes to cost is the type of safari you choose. A private safari (where you’ll have your own vehicle and guide just for you for the duration of your holiday) is obviously the most expensive option. Group safaris (where you share vehicles and guides) are cheaper. If you choose a self-drive safari, the costs will lie somewhere between group and private safaris. As a rule, the combination of pricier lodges and high park entrance fees means that the safari leg of your trip will cost much more per day than staying on Zanzibar. This means that you can cut costs by spending less time on safari and more at the beach.”

What is the ideal holiday length for a Tanzania safari with a stay in Zanzibar?

“The short answer to this question is that the longer you have, the better! How long you stay will, of course, depend on how much time you have available and how much you’re willing to pay for your trip. As a starting point, most people would regard 8 to 12 days (exclusive of international flights) as the ideal length of a trip combining a Tanzania safari with Zanzibar, but shorter itineraries are workable and the upper limit is as long as you want it to be. To visit mainland Tanzania on safari, you may want to visit a number of parks. If you do this, you could fly between them, thereby saving traveling time but also increasing the cost of your safari. A week on the Northern safari circuit is just about long enough to fit in the four main parks there (Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti), but 8 days or longer on safari would be more relaxed. Other activities, such as chimp trekking in the parks of western Tanzania or climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, will obviously add numerous days to your calculations. For the Zanzibar section of your trip, so much depends on how much time you want to spend by the beach. Stone Town could be seen in a day, but you’ll definitely want to immerse yourself in its charms for longer.”

What is the best time to visit Tanzania and Zanzibar?

“For mainland Tanzania, the best time for safari holidays is from June to October. This coincides with the Dry season, meaning that you’re more likely to enjoy favorable weather and road conditions. The Dry season is also the best time for seeing wildlife, as the animals are more likely to be closer to known water sources and therefore easier to find. If you’re a birder, you may want to consider the months from November to April, when migrating birds spend nearly six months in the country. If you’re hoping to see the great wildebeest migration in the Serengeti, when around 2 million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle migrate through the park, often with predators in tow, then the best months are January to February in the south, June to July in the west, and August to September in the north. Zanzibar is very much a year-round destination: it’s always warm enough to go to the beach. That said, the best weather is usually from June or July until October, while the rainiest months are April and to a lesser extent March and May.”

How do I get to Zanzibar from mainland Tanzania?

“The overwhelming majority of Tanzania safari and Zanzibar tours and trips involve flying between mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Sometimes the flights may be direct from an airstrip in one of the national parks (such as the Serengeti) to Zanzibar. On other packages, you may need to change planes in Arusha, the gateway city to the Northern circuit. If you’re changing in Arusha, you may end up traveling on two very different kinds of planes – a small plane to and from the national parks, then a commercial airliner from Arusha to Zanzibar. There are lots of different possibilities, so ask any prospective tour operators when making your trip inquiries. Regular ferry (boat) services connect Dar es Salaam (the largest city on the Tanzanian mainland) to Zanzibar, and the quickest take less than an hour. However, ferries are seldom used for safari extensions to Zanzibar because you would first need to fly to Dar to catch one.”

Zanzibar safari | Sun, Sea & Safari

Visitors to the glorious island of Zanzibar come not just for the breathtaking beaches, beautiful corals and turquoise waters but to make the most of their African travels and combine their beach plans with Zanzibar safari adventures on mainland Tanzania.

In the Zanzibar archipelago and its mainland in Tanzania, guests can easily combine the two. Zanzibar’s white sand beaches are simply stunning and attract visitors from the world over to its shores whilst the island’s wildlife attractions are more limited to marine life, monkeys and birds.

The big five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) wildlife can easily be found however on the Tanzanian mainland, a short 30 minute plane hop from Zanzibar to the spectacular Selous Game Reserve or a 2 hour ferry ride to Mikumi NP or a 3 hour charter flight to the world renowned Serengeti National Park.

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends or a larger family group)
  • Activities you would like to include (hot air balloon, hiking)

Best time to go on a beach and safari in Zanzibar

Tanzania is a beautiful country to visit, regardless of the season and popular with visitors from the U.S, Europe and South Africa.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know the best time to visit Zanzibar , visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

The best time to visit Zanzibar for a beach and safari trip is during the dry season, from late June to October. The Zanzibar beaches are dry with no rains and the summer months are ideal for the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings and impressive wildlife sightings.

Zanzibar and Tanzania safari cost

Tanzania is a premier safari destination in Africa, thus incurring the more expensive costs associated with this.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in Tanzania including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flight transfers from Zanzibar island to game reserves on the mainland, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and the best things to do in Zanzibar as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your Zanzibar holiday and Tanzania safari including:

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Tanzania where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation from Stone Town in Zanzibar to the game reserve
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices
  • Day safaris and full day itineraries customised to your requirements

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Trip preparation

Travellers can fly to Zanzibar via the island’s main airport (ZNZ) for visitors wondering how to get to Zanzibar .

A tourist visa is required to enter Zanzibar for U.S, U.K, Canada and EU citizens. Tanzania has introduced an ‘e-visas’ system through which applications can be submitted and approved online in advance of travel.

It is also possible to get a tourist or business visa for a single entry on arrival at main ports of entry to Tanzania, subject to the fulfilment of all immigration requirements. Visitors may also be asked to provide proof of their return journey.

A visitor’s passport must be valid for at least 6 months with at least one free blank page and and certain vaccinations may also be required to enter the country.

The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Zanzibar and Tanzania: Covid-19, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

Most safari parks are high-risk zones. The highest risk of transition is in the rainy season from November to May.

Further details on Zanzibar vaccine & covid info here .

Zanzibar

Zanzibar Holidays

Zanzibar is magical: the spice-scented, quintessential Indian Ocean idyll. Tropical, turquoise waters lap miles of palm-fringed, sandy beaches.

Zanzibar

For hundreds of years, traders and travellers have eulogised about Zanzibar’s intoxicating aroma of spices, its beautiful beaches and the bustle of its Moorish capital, Stone Town. It’s name alone - as evocative as Timbuktu, Casablanca or Kilimanjaro - is alluring enough for many to dream of visiting. Just a short hop across the water from mainland Tanzania - of which Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part - is this lush array of islands. It’s impossible not to be enchanted as you approach from the air: clear, sparkling waters, darkened only by patch reefs, and punctuated by the billowing triangular, white sails of passing dhows. On land, chic beach retreats, intimate converted palaces, private island villas and fun family-friendly resorts offer warm welcomes and totally tropical experiences. Be it trailblazing models of responsible tourism or world-class sophistication, the options are myriad. The capital’s heart, ’Stone Town’, is an UNESCO Heritage Site: a labyrinth of narrow winding alleys dotted with bustling markets, eclectic souvenir shops and fine merchant houses hidden behind intricately carved doors. It’s an exotic urban backdrop and a fascinating insight into the islands’ Omani heritage. For many, it’s the Indian Ocean beach experience that has the greatest lure: palm-lined stretches of powder-white coral sands, warm waters and coral gardens teeming with marine life. From adrenalin sports to simple seaside fun; sipping sundowners to deep-sea diving; some of the islands’ most magical moments definitely centre on the sea. Above the waves, kite-surfers showcase their aquatic aerobatics, snorkellers ply the shallow lagoons and traditional dhows take fishermen in photogenic flotillas beyond the reef. Below the surface, tropical fish and turtles entice divers of all abilities, and starfish-studded intertidal walks are fascinating. And from the shoreline, watching golden sunsets melt into the sea make for perfect ends to laid-back island days.

When to go to Zanzibar

Our month-by-month guide to the best time for visiting Zanzibar

Zanzibar in January

As on the Tanzanian mainland, January typically marks the start of the short dry season in Zanzibar. Conditions are likely to be hot and mostly dry, with temperatures exceeding 30ºC, although it is not uncommon to get a tropical shower in the afternoons. January can feel very humid at times, and this is particularly noticeable in Stone Town, although this can be tempered by the cooling sea breeze. New Year is one of the most popular times to visit Zanzibar, with many hotels being fully booked over the festive period. The island generally becomes much quieter after 10th January, and prices drop too.

  • Mostly hot with the occasional shower.
  • High humidity, which can be relieved by the refreshing breeze.
  • Very busy over New Year, with high prices and long minimum stays often
  • Quieter and better value later in the month.
  • Wind from the northeast, and so the southwest coast is more sheltered.

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in January

Zanzibar in February

The weather in February is fairly similar to January, with days typically being hot and sunny although expect the occasional rainy spell. The humidity remains high, however the coastal areas often have a refreshing breeze. Zanzibar is fairly quiet in February, and with comparatively low prices it can be excellent value for money. At this time the wind blows from the northeast, and so the southwest coast is often more sheltered and there can be good diving in the Menai Bay. The northeast winds can also lead to good conditions for kite surfing, with many kite surfers heading to the southeast coast and Michamvi Peninsula. For music lovers, Stone Town hosts an annual African music festival ‘Sauti za Busara’ each February. The festival's dates change each year; ask us for details.

  • Variable: mostly hot and humid with some cloud and rainy spells.
  • Fewer tourists and comparatively low prices.
  • Popular time for kite surfing, especially around the southeast coast.
  • North easterly wind, better diving in the south west of the island.
  • ‘Sauti za Busara’ music festival in early February.

Weather in February

Zanzibar in March

March sees the start of the ‘long rains’ in Zanzibar, although the exact start date varies every year. The weather can be unpredictable, with a combination of hot sunny days, rain showers, and the occasional tropical storm. The arrival of the rains lowers the humidity, and it can also lead to some beautiful sunsets – most obviously on the west coast where you can watch the sunset over the ocean. Prices remain low during March, and the island is likely to be relatively quiet. Diving is generally not recommended during the rainy season, as variable conditions can lead to reduced visibility from rainfall runoff, and choppy water.

  • Hot and humid, leading to heavy rains later in the month.
  • Low prices, and the island is comparatively quiet.
  • Variable weather leads to poor conditions for diving.
  • The start of the rains can lead to beautiful sunsets.

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in March

Zanzibar in April

April is typically the wettest month of the year in Zanzibar, and the long rains are in full force. The average rainfall is more than 250mm during this month, and tropical storms are common. Flooding regularly occurs, which can impact the quality of the roads, and consequently cause difficult, slow journeys across the island. Many of the hotels and beach lodges close at this time, so accommodation options can be limited. Having said this, prices are at their lowest, and if you don’t mind the risk of bad weather you can get some real bargains. Despite the poor conditions, Easter weekend is often popular, and advance booking is recommended. Due to the strong likelihood of rain and poor conditions diving is inadvisable at this time.

  • Heavy rain and tropical storms expected throughout the month.
  • Areas of flooding leading to poor travel conditions.
  • Many hotels close for refurbishment at this time.
  • Low prices and few other tourists.
  • Diving inadvisable due to heavy rain and reduced visibility.

A time to avoid if possible

Weather in April

Zanzibar in May

The long rains continue into May, and as with April you can expect thunderstorms and heavy showers, although these typically ease up towards the end of the month. Parts of the island can experience flooding, causing damage to roads and impacting travel times. The temperature typically drops a little in May, with a daytime average of around 25ºC. The rains lead to a lower humidity too, and mornings and evenings can feel a bit cooler. Many of the hotels and lodges are still closed, however a handful stay open and prices remain low. While diving is possible, the rain and storms mean that diving conditions are not at their best.

  • Continuation of the long rains, with thunderstorms and lightning.
  • Flooding common, but conditions becoming drier as the month progresses
  • Drop in temperatures, with cooler mornings and evenings.
  • Prices low, and many hotels remain closed.

Weather in May

Zanzibar in June

June marks the start of the long dry season in Zanzibar. While the island still gets rainfall, especially early in the month, it’s becomes less likely as the month progresses. Temperatures remain steady, with daytime highs averaging 25ºC, and it likely to be mostly dry. Any rain you do experience is likely to be in shorter bursts rather than heavy storms and hours of continuous rain, although conditions vary from year to year. The wind direction switches to blow from the southeast, and the northeast coast is likely to be more sheltered at this time. Diving conditions can be variable, and while they are generally good there can be some rough days.

  • Variable weather: mostly hot and dry, with some rainy showers.
  • Wind from the southwest, and more sheltered in the north east.
  • Diving conditions variable, dependent on the wind and rain.
  • Lower prices and generally good weather can lead to great value.

Weather in June

Zanzibar in July

July is a very popular time to go to Zanzibar, and this coincides with the long dry season. July and August are the school holidays throughout much of Europe, and Zanzibar can often be busy with families. Weather conditions are generally hot and dry and pretty ideal for a beach holiday, however there is still a chance of an occasional short shower. Conditions for diving are typically pretty good, however this will be dependent on recent weather conditions. The Zanzibar International Film Festival takes place in July, with lots of people flocking to Stone Town to soak up the atmosphere. The dates for the festival change every year, so chat to Expert Africa for details.

  • Typically hot and dry with clear skies, although showers are possible.
  • Can become very busy, with many families traveling during holidays.
  • Zanzibar International Film Festival takes place in Stone Town.
  • Great beach weather result in high prices.

A very good time to visit

Weather in July

Zanzibar in August

August is one of the most popular times of year to visit Zanzibar, and with good reason; this is one of the driest months and it is typically hot with clear skies – ideal for relaxing on the beach. Many families choose to visit during August, and the island can be busy, and this is particularly noticeable in Stone Town and around the more popular snorkelling sites. High demand can mean that many of the more popular hotels and beach lodges can be booked up more than 6 months ahead, so advance booking is crucial. Due to the popularity and great beach weather prices are high.

  • Hot and sunny, generally ideal for relaxing on the beach.
  • Popular time for families and the island can be busy.
  • High demand leads to higher prices, and advance booking is essential.
  • With little rain falling and causing soil run-off, the sea is clear.

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in August

Zanzibar in September

September is an excellent time of year to visit Zanzibar. Weather conditions are typically very good, with clear skies and temperatures ranging from 20¬–30ºC. September is also one of the driest months, averaging 50mm of rain during the month, however rain showers are still possible. Due to the great beach conditions prices remain high, however with fewer families travelling in September the island can be a little quieter at this time. September to December are often some of the calmest months at sea, which can result in superb conditions for diving. The wind typically blows from the southeast, and the northeast coast can often be a little more sheltered. You can find some beautiful snorkelling and diving spots around Mnemba Island.

  • Warm temperatures and clear skies, with the off-chance of rain.
  • Fewer families travelling, and the island can be a little quieter.
  • Great beach weather means that prices remain high.
  • Relatively calm seas result in good conditions for diving.

Weather in September

Zanzibar in October

October is the tail end of the dry season and you can generally expect hot, dry conditions. The short rains typically start in early November, and so this does mean that there is an increased likelihood of rainy spells as the month progresses. October remains a popular month to travel, particularly so during the European half-term school holidays, and advance booking is advised. With high demand and great weather prices remain high, however there are some long-stay special offers to be found. South-easterly winds mean that the northeast coast can be more sheltered and conditions for diving can be good.

  • End of the dry season, generally good beach weather.
  • Increased chance of rain, particularly near the end of the month.
  • Popular with families during the half-term school holiday.
  • High demand means prices remain high.
  • Northeast coast generally more sheltered.

Weather in October

Zanzibar in November

The short rains start during November, however their exact start varies year on year. You are likely to experience a mixture of hot, dry days with the occasional tropical shower, however we find that short showers can actually be quite refreshing. With the start of the rains the humidity can shoot up and while the coastal properties tend to receive a pleasant cooling breeze Stone Town and the island interior can feel quite hot and clammy. Prices drop in November and there are some real bargains to be found. This time of year can be great value for money, especially near the start of the month when the weather conditions are very comparable to late October. The demand is generally lower, and the island starts to feel much quieter.

  • Variable weather: mostly hot and dry but with some clouds and rain.
  • Hot temperatures, with humidity on the rise.
  • Less busy than October, and with lower prices it can be great value.

Weather in November

Zanzibar in December

December falls in to the short rainy season, and the weather can be variable. Days are likely to be hot and humid, with the occasional patch of rain, although showers can be a blessing in disguise as they help to lower the temperature. Early December is fairly quiet and prices are low, however this changes dramatically over Christmas and New Year. The festive season, from around 20th December to 5th January, is arguably the most popular time to visit Zanzibar. Prices are at their highest, and long minimum stays are imposed. Due to the very high demand booking early is essential, especially if you’re a group or a large family. Book six months to a year in advance, or even more, if possible.

  • Variable weather, with a mix of hot, sunny days and tropical showers.
  • High humidity, which may be mitigated by the cool ocean breeze.
  • Quiet with lower prices earlier in the month.
  • Busy and exceptionally popular over Christmas and New Year.
  • Advance booking over Christmas and New Year is essential.

Map of Zanzibar

Zanzibar | the areas, where is zanzibar, getting to zanzibar, the best beaches on zanzibar.

  • Nungwi and Kendwa (North) -  The best beaches on the island. Really beautiful and classic Indian Ocean paradise. Non-tidal turquoise waters and really powdery white sands. Can sometimes be busy.
  • Pongwe (East) -  Pongwe sits in a little concave bit of coast line which means the beach is glorious and when the tide isn't completely in, it is seaweed free and very pretty. Not the long sweeping beaches of the north, but a pocket of pure beachy gold. Less busy than the north.
  • Paje and Dongwe (East) -  Although tidal, here sit some of our favourite luxury boutique hotels. You would not be let down here in terms of accommodation. The beach is beautiful, but getting your toes wet is a bit harder than in the northern Nungwi regions as the sea is further out and very tidal.
  • Matemwe (North-East) -  Slightly to the east of Nungwi, Matemwe is slightly tidal but when the tide is in there are a few of our favourite fantastic value accommodation options.

In Zanzibar, the scent of spices and the richness of history and culture combine with white sandy beaches, excellent diving, and spectacular snorkeling.

The three main islands off the mainland of East Africa (Zanzibar, Pemba , and Mafia Islands ) are full of energy, each with its own appeal.

They’re perfect for relaxing after a safari in Tanzania or a Kilimanjaro climb , offering a combination of tranquil and adventurous activities.

Zanzibar is the biggest and busiest of the three holiday destinations and is stacked with a colorful lifestyle. Pemba Island, just to the north, is less of a mainstream tourist attraction where diving is the main drawcard.

The quiet island of Mafia lies south of Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam, just across from the famous Selous Game Reserve’s Rufiji River mouth. A well-protected marine reserve, it’s a peaceful honeymoon, diving, and fishing destination.

Where to go in Zanzibar

  • Bwejuu, Paje & Jambiani
  • Kiwengwa and Pongwe
  • Mafia Island
  • Nungwi & Kendwa
  • Pemba Island
  • Pingwe, Dongwe & The Michamvi Peninsula
  • Ras Kizimkazi

The 10km (6,2mi) beach between Bwejuu and Jambiani Village starts relaxed, and low-key north of Bwejuu swells with backpackers and kite surfers in Paje, then tapers off gradually into equally understated Jambiani.

There’s plenty of excellent midrange and budget accommodation available .

Jambiani Beach

This stretch of coastline attracts families and a younger crowd, split between the quieter beaches to the north and south and the relaxed beach bars, restaurants, and water sports of Paje.

This beach holiday destination in Zanzibar is perfect for any traveler. Whether traveling with your family, friends or solo, Bwejuu, Paje & Jambiani will suit you.

Highlights of Bwejuu, Paje & Jambiani

Paje is Zanzibar’s hottest kitesurfing destination, and many well-run kitesurfing schools offer lessons and rentals. Paje’s lagoon is ideal for kitesurfing.

Some operators also provide organized excursions to scenic kiting spots up and down the coast, making it a perfect destination for an active holiday in Zanzibar .

Incredible snorkeling : The coral lagoon in front of Paje and Jambiani is particularly wide and beautiful, even by Zanzibar’s extraordinary standards. Masks and fins can be hired for a few dollars from just about any hotel along the strip.

Just keep an eye on the tide, or you’ll have a long walk back to the beach. Paje and Jambiani are the perfect places in Zanzibar to have an adventurous holiday with family and friends .

Travel Tips for Bwejuu, Paje & Jambiani

If you’re into kitesurfing (or wish to avoid the crowds), note that the main seasons are between December and March and May to October. Some rental businesses close completely out of season, although there’s generally enough of a breeze to satisfy beginners year-round.

The village of Kiwengwa lies on Zanzibar Island’s north-eastern coast, roughly halfway between Nungwi and Chwaka.

Large, all-inclusive hotels and stylish upmarket lodges dot Kiwengwa’s long, immaculate beach, which runs nearly unbroken all the way north to Matemwe .

A few breezy kilometers to the south, the even sleepier Pongwe supports around a dozen, mostly stylish, mid- to upmarket resorts with little else to do but kick back and relax.

If you’re looking for a relaxing holiday in Zanzibar , Kiwengwa and Pongwe are the way to go.

Highlights of Kiwengwa and Pongwe

Learn kitesurfing in Kiwengwa: With its year-round, stable winds and beautiful wide lagoon, Kiwengwa is a great place to learn to kitesurf.

A handful of friendly kite schools dot the beach – simply wander in, have a chat, and book an impromptu lesson if the place grabs you. If you want an active holiday in Zanzibar, kitesurfing in Kiwengwa is an excellent choice.

Boat sailing in sunset, Zanzibar

Peaceful Pongwe: There is nothing to do in Pongwe but chill and have a relaxing holiday. If ultimate downtime is what you’re after, Pongwe is the perfect beach for your Zanzibar vacation.

Travel Tips for Kiwengwa and Pongwe

  • Both Kiwengwa and Pongwe are easy to reach by road from Zanzibar Town.
  • There’s a small ‘mall’ in Kiwengwa with a cash machine, supermarket, and pharmacy – but nothing in Pongwe.
  • Kiwengwa’s resorts attract many visitors from Italy, and you’ll find many shopfronts and menus written in Italian.

150km (93mi) south of Zanzibar Island lies the third largest isle in the archipelago, Mafia. Mafia Island is so far removed and has so many smaller satellites of its own that it’s a miniature archipelago in its own right.

Zanzibar islands.

Rarely visited and much quieter even than Pemba , Mafia, and its surrounding islands are a diver’s paradise . Giant groupers, rays, turtles, and whale sharks all frequent its warm, clear waters.

Chole Bay is perhaps the best coral garden in East Africa , making it an ideal spot to add to your itinerary when visiting Zanzibar on your vacation.

Accommodation around Mafia tends to be intimate and upmarket, and stunning private island lodges are available for the ultimate in exclusivity.

Highlights of Mafia Island

A diver’s paradise : If you love diving, then a pilgrimage to Mafia must be on your bucket list. From Chole Bay’s extraordinary coral and fabulously colorful schools of reef fish to the deeper waters where rays and whale sharks roam,

Dolphins in the waters of Zanzibar.

Mafia’s archipelago has something for every experience level, but the real wonder is that you’ll probably have it all to yourself! Witness hatching turtles: Juani Island, just off the coast of Mafia, is an exceptional place to see tiny green and hawksbill turtles dash for the sea.

Environmentally sensitive tours can be arranged between June and September, run by an enthusiastic NGO playing a significant role in local turtle conservation in Zanzibar.

Travel Tips for Mafia Island

  • Although local dhows run to the mainland, flying is the only practical way to get to Mafia. Scheduled and charter flights run regularly from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar Island, and you should expect to pay around $250 to $350 return.
  • If you’re going diving, then pick your month carefully. Chole Bay can be dived year-round, but the deeper channels are only viable from August to November. October to February has the best visibility, although it’s rarely below 15m (49ft) at any time of year.
  • For the best beach conditions, aim for late May to the start of the short rainy season in November.
  • September to early March is prime whale shark season, so it’s only mid-March to mid-May that should be avoided completely when the island receives most of its rain.

Matemwe, and neighboring Kigomani, are the northernmost villages on Zanzibar’s east coast.

Beach in Zanzibar.

A quiet fishing community under gently swaying palms, Matemwe village lies half concealed behind a modest line of beachfront resorts, which range from simple cottages to plush private villas, perfect for a luxury vacation in Zanzibar .

Tropical beach in Zanzibar.

An excellent beach spills into a narrow, sheltered lagoon where dhows and outriggers rest on the tide. This is a corner of the island where the slow pace settles in – ideal for those wishing to escape the crowds and relax on a Zanzibar vacation .

Highlights of Matemwe

Peace and quiet: Matemwe is one of Zanzibar Island’s most relaxed destinations – classic palm-fringed beaches, white sand, and an emerald sea are perfect for a relaxing holiday in Zanzibar.

Tropical beach in Zanzibar

The beaches along this stretch are some of the best and quietest on the east coast, and the fishing, snorkeling, and diving are superb .

Travel Tips

  • Be aware that Matemwe is a working village – fishing and seaweed harvesting are the main industries here, and villagers expect to get on with their daily life without camera-toting tourists clicking away.
  • Although remotely situated, Matemwe is easy to reach. Private transfers take little more than an hour from Zanzibar Town.

On Zanzibar Island’s northernmost tip, the once sleepy village of Nungwi is still the traditional center of dhow building on Zanzibar.

An old favorite among backpackers and hippies, the scene has transformed in recent years with hotels, bars, hostels, and dive centers now lining the sandy shoreline in a near continuous strip southwest to Kendwa.

The still relatively quiet village of Kendwa has also expanded, but its uniquely wide beach and understated resorts continue to offer a more laid-back vibe.

This region is perfect for a relaxing holiday in Zanzibar and is suitable for young travelers looking for a good time.

Highlights of Nungwi & Kendwa

Full moon beach parties: Although relatively quiet for the rest of the month, Kendwa pumps up the volume each full moon with a lively beach party that draws visitors from around the island.

Kendwa’s full moon parties are legendary and remain one of Zanzibar’s favorite holiday attractions .

Dhow building and village tours: Nungwi beach remains a focal point for Zanzibari shipbuilding, where skilled shipwrights use age-old methods and tools to turn rough timber planks into ocean-going dhows.

Village tours can also be arranged for those interested in discovering the cultural side of dhow building and how the tradition persists through the centuries.

Travel Tips for Nungwi & Kendwa

  • Although luxury hotels are now available, Nungwi and especially Kendwa remain two of the best destinations on Zanzibar Island for quality, affordable accommodation – head here if you’re looking for a party.
  • Kendwa has the better beach, and the deeper water on the north-western strip means swimming is possible throughout the day; the island’s eastern beaches are almost all tide-dependent.

About 50km (31mi) northeast of Zanzibar Island (more accurately, ‘Unguja’) lies the archipelago’s second largest landmass, Pemba.

Boat off a beach on Pemba Island, Zanzibar.

Pemba has forever been Zanzibar’s most green and fertile isle, and most of the cloves for which Zanzibar is famous are grown here. The annual harvest runs from July to January, when the scent of drying cloves lingers on every passing breeze.

However, most visitors to Zanzibar never make it to a Pemba holiday , and the island remains far quieter than its big brother Unguja.

Accommodation options are also far more limited but by no means run-of-the-mill. Most fall between the mid-range and ultra-luxurious, including some of the most spectacular beach resorts Zanzibar offers for a perfect vacation .

Highlights of Pemba Island

See Zanzibar’s endemic species: Ngezi Forest Reserve, on Pemba’s north-western tip, is perhaps the best place in the archipelago to see Zanzibar’s indigenous wildlife.

Seascape of Zanzibar.

A beautiful, unspoiled expanse of forest in its own right, it also hosts the Pemba flying fox (an enormous but completely harmless fruit bat), various species of monkey and miniature antelope.

Ngezi Forest Reserve is home to Zanzibar’s three endemic bird species, the Pemba scops owl, Pemba white-eye, and Pemba violet-breasted sunbird.

Low visitor numbers: Pemba is ideal if you’re looking to escape the crowds. Beaches are quieter, snorkeling reefs are barely visited, and on the whole, the island exudes exclusivity while still retaining enough accommodation options to suit most budgets .

Excellent wall and drift diving: Pemba has excellent diving for all levels but is perhaps best known for its more technical diving opportunities.

Free diver swimming with a whale shark, Zanzibar

Experienced divers can dip into the island’s stronger currents and glide along astonishing vertical walls as manta and eagle rays flap by.

Travel Tips for Pemba Island

  • Most visitors arrive on Pemba by air, with scheduled daily flights and charters available from Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar Island. A substantially cheaper ferry service is also available.
  • Forex is only available in the capital, Chake Chake, but the exchange rates are generally quite poor.
  • Don’t expect much connectivity on Pemba. Even the top-end resorts struggle to provide high-speed wi-fi.
  • The best months on Pemba are July to October. December to March tend to be more humid and windier as the north-eastern Kaskazi blows.

The Michamvi Peninsula, just north of Chwaka Bay, is a narrow, thumb-like headland that boasts some of Zanzibar Island’s most exclusive hotels and resorts .

Fishing boat on a tropical beach in Zanzibar.

The north-western tip has the added advantage of being the only true sundowner spot along the east coast (with a kilometer and a half of pristine west-facing beachfront and magnificent views across Chwaka Bay), making it a perfect beach holiday destination in Zanzibar.

Most of the peninsula’s luxury resorts face east, however, scattered along the beach between Dongwe and Pingwe Village. Some of these are Zanzibar’s most refined and stylish, complete with private dive centers, private plunge pools, and spas.

Highlights of Pingwe, Dongwe & the Michamvi Peninsula

East-coast sunsets: The western corner of the Michamvi Peninsula enjoys breathtaking ocean sunsets, a rare and special sight on the east coast of Africa.

A handful of laid-back bars and restaurants take full advantage of the views, and it’s a lovely way to spend an evening, even if you’re not staying on the western side.

The Rock: The Rock Restaurant deserves special mention for its unique setting.

The Rock Restaurant in Zanzibar.

Perched on a tiny coral outcrop about 30 meters off Pingwe beach, this simple, thatched cottage serves a lunchtime menu of fresh seafood daily, and depending on the tide, you’ll have to catch a boat there or back (or swim!).

Travel Tips for Pingwe, Dongwe & The Michamvi

From December to March , the north-eastern Kaskazi monsoon blows, washing seaweed onto the eastern beaches and, in some places, eroding the sand.

Zanzibar beach,

This is especially true on the northeast of Michamvi Peninsula, which bears the brunt of the northeaster at this time of year.

A rarely visited corner of southwestern Zanzibar , Ras Kizimkazi offers a handful of quiet, laid-back lodges plus a pinch of the ultra-exclusive. The region’s two small villages lie a few kilometers apart.

Kizimkazi Dimbani is on the southernmost tip of the island, and the busier Kizimkazi Mkunguni is up the coast to the northwest.

Most of the region’s tourism revolves around dolphin excursions; the small and, in places, rocky beaches are undeniably beautiful but lack the pull of the island’s east coast, making it an ideal destination for an exclusive beach holiday in Zanzibar.

Highlights of Ras Kizimkazi

The village of Kizimkazi Mkunguni is the center of the region’s most popular tourist attraction – boat trips to see the resident bottlenose and humpback dolphins.

Full-day excursions can be arranged from Zanzibar Town or booked locally if you’re staying in the area. Raz Kizimkazi is a perfect beach holiday destination if you’re seeking adventure in Zanzibar .

Travel Tips for Ras Kizimkazi

  • There’s no guarantee that you’ll see dolphins on a tour – they’re wild creatures and rarely allow boats close enough for visitors to swim with them.
  • To maximize your chances, visit between October and February , stay in Ras Kizimkazi itself and hire a boat from a local who’s happy to cruise all day.
  • Be cautious of anyone offering guaranteed sightings. They’re likely to employ unethical methods to make good on their promise.

Stone Town is Zanzibar’s historic heart , a bewildering maze of streets and alleyways that form the westernmost tip of Zanzibar Town.

Stone Town, Zanzibar.

These days the island’s bustling capital is home to some quarter of a million people but lost in the tangle of Stone Town’s narrow streets, it’s easy to imagine yourself floating back in time.

Twisting passages unfurl beneath delicate balconies as you dodge clattering coffee carts and slip by past ornately carved doors.

At three and four stories, the buildings tower overhead, leaving just a ribbon of sky between billowing laundry and shutters flung wide.

Architecture of Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Though first settled by the Portuguese in the 16th century, most of Stone Town’s construction dates to the 19th and (to a lesser extent) 18th centuries – a mesmerizing mix of Arabic, Persian, Indian and British architecture.

Stone Town, Zanzibar.

Victorian era accounts of the quarter carry an authentic feeling to this today. Stone Town is a perfect holiday destination in Zanzibar if you want a cultural and historical experience.

Highlights of Stone Town

  • Walk the streets: The best way to explore Stone Town is on foot, though renting a bicycle is an option if time is short. Hiring a local guide is a great way to discover the hidden histories and lesser-known sights, and the end of Ramadan is especially festive, with lanterns lining the alleys and a feast of street food on every corner.
  • Go shopping: From neat, sustainable fashion boutiques to the loud, chaotic market on Creek Street, Stone Town has plenty to offer the dedicated shopper. Look out for brightly colored kanga and kikois (traditional wrap-around clothing), silver and tanzanite jewelry, handmade leather bags, sandals and shoes, a seemingly endless range of woven baskets, wooden carvings, throws, wall hangings, rugs, antiques and ornaments of all shapes and sizes, not to mention spice-infused beauty products and oils and, of course, the spices themselves.
  • Take a spice tour: Spice tours can be arranged from your hotel or one of the many tour operators around town. A variety of tours are available, some including lunch and/or spice cooking classes, but all with the opportunity to head out into the still active plantations and see, touch and taste Zanzibar’s many spices in their natural environment.
  • Try the local food: Forodhani Gardens food market is the place to go to sample the best of Zanzibar’s eclectic street food. Crisp samosas, fresh fish and coconut curries, and the misleadingly-named ‘Zanzibar pizzas’ (more of a filled pancake) are just a few available options. Alternately, search out one of Stone Town’s more sophisticated new restaurants where quality seafood and delicious traditional recipes are the order of the day.
  • Visit the museums: Stone Town has several small but fascinating museums with exhibitions ranging from dhow construction to the evils of the slave trade. Seek out, in particular, the Palace Museum, Livingstone House Museum, Princess Salme Museum, and the House of Wonders (the first building in Zanzibar to install electric lights).

Travel Tips for Stone Town

  • If you’re visiting during Ramadan, be aware that many restaurants close, and the usual daytime buzz on the streets is somewhat subdued. Some hotels also close down during the March to May low season, although others offer discounted rates to encourage visitors.
  • Organize any tours or travel arrangements directly with your hotel or a reputable agent, and treat the street touts (known locally as papaasi) with caution. Pickpockets are also an occasional hazard in Stone Town’s narrow alleys so take the appropriate precautions.
  • Remember that Zanzibar is a predominantly Islamic society, and covering shoulders and legs below the knees is considered appropriate for both men and women. Bars serve alcohol, as do most (but not all) restaurants, and drinking on the street is frowned upon, although not actually illegal.

When is the best month to travel to zanzibar.

  • Zanzibar in January

January marks the start of the short dry season in Zanzibar, a period of relatively hot, humid weather that builds gradually from late December and runs through to the beginning of March.

Prison Island, Zanzibar

Average temperatures in Zanzibar remain pretty constant throughout the year, but January is one of the hotter months, with daytime highs regularly up to 35°C (95°F). Although generally sunny, there may still be the occasional afternoon thunderstorm in Zanzibar.

These clear quickly, however, and won’t disrupt you too much when enjoying a beach holiday in Zanzibar.

vakantie zanzibar safari

With sea temperatures of up to 30°C (86°F), they’re unlikely to put you off swimming either but expect a few windy days as the north-eastern ‘kaskazi’ wind blows in Zanzibar in January.

Mafia Island, Zanzibar

The north-eastern kaskazi is a major factor in choosing where in Zanzibar to holiday in January. Beaches along Zanzibar’s north and east coasts bear the brunt of the wind – a steady, stiff breeze usually between 20 and 30 km/h (11-17 knots).

Wind and waves can also wash seaweed onto the eastern beaches, although many resorts make a point of clearing the bathing areas in front of their properties. If you’re a kite surfer, all this is great, of course, and the stable, moderate winds are also ideal for beginners.

Zanzibar kitesurfers.

Paje very popular at this time of year, as is Kiwengwa , although it’s a bit more low-key. If you’re looking for something more sheltered, try Kendwa or Ras Kizimkazi . Day trips to the west coast atolls of Chumbe and Prison Island are also ideal at this time of year.

Zanzibar beach.

January is an ideal time to visit Zanzibar for a beach holiday with friends or family.

  • January is Zanzibar’s mango season, and the markets are full of fresh, ripe fruit. It also marks the end of the clove harvest in Pemba , with fragrant piles of the islands’ main export drying in the sun. January is prime time for swimming with whale sharks off Mafia Island , and the visibility is at its best over the coral gardens of Chole Bay.
  • Kitesurfing aside, January’s only real disadvantage is the kaskazi wind, which, although rarely so strong as to be unpleasant, can blow seaweed onto the eastern beaches and erode the sand along the northeastern coast. The seas may also be too rough for some off-shore dive sites, but there are always other options along the more sheltered west.
  • Zanzibar in February

February is Zanzibar’s hottest month and also one of its driest. Daytime highs regularly exceed 35°C (95°F), with sultry, humid conditions that build and build until the clouds burst in March.

The north-eastern ‘kaskazi’ wind, having reached its peak in January, eases off gradually as February unfolds.

Fishermen and their dhow, Kiwengwa Beach, Zanzibar.

It’s an excellent month for dedicated beach holiday time, with minimal chance of an afternoon shower, moderate to light breezes, and warm (if not hot!) seas, which can easily top 30°C (86°F), especially in the shallower bays and lagoons.

Tropical beach in Zanzibar.

Although the kaskazi wind slowly dies down throughout February, Zanzibar’s southern and western coasts are still the more sheltered.

Kendwa’s wide, protected beach is ideal for sunbathing and swimming, and it’s a good time of year for dolphin excursions off Ras Kizimkazi .

To the west and south of Zanzibar Town, Prison and Chumbe Islands make great day trips – Chumbe for its protected snorkeling reef and Prison Island for its giant tortoises.

None of this is to suggest that the east coast is off limits. In fact, the mellowing kaskazi can bring welcome relief from the heat. February is a popular month all along the east coast, especially in Paje , which remains popular for kitesurfing.

February is a very popular month to choose Zanzibar as a beach holiday destination with its heat and ideal weather conditions.

  • February’s major highlight is the Sauti za Busara Music Festival, which takes place in and around Stone Town’s Old Fort each year. Over four frenetic days, some of Africa’s best musicians rock the crowds with a mix of African jazz, pop, and local taarab beats. It’s a wonderful time to be in Stone Town but bear in mind that the old quarter is much busier than usual and accommodation can be harder to find. For divers, the southern sites are at their absolute best in February , especially the coral reefs of Mafia’s Chole Bay .
  • February is an excellent month to be in Zanzibar, but if you struggle with the heat, then May to September may be better. Swimming with the whale sharks is still possible off Mafia, but the deeper dive sites are usually too rough for safe access. The kaskazi may be lessening, but sand erosion and washed-up seaweed can still be an issue along beaches in the northeast.
  • Zanzibar in March

Zanzibar’s main rainy season begins in March, but the first heavy downpours may only arrive mid-month. Until they do, the archipelago remains at its hottest and most humid as the summer winds subside and the beaches bake in the sun.

Daily highs reach over 35°C (95°F) before the monsoon hits, bringing some relief. Early March is prime beach holiday time across the islands, but the towering thunderheads signal the low season, and a number of hotels and resorts close.

Overall, however, March weather is difficult to predict. Some years the rains come early or late, and even once they begin, there can be some very fine days in between.

Red colobus monkey in the trees of Zanzibar rain forest

March’s unpredictable weather extends across Zanzibar, and throughout the islands, it can be fine and hot or pouring. As the rains arrive, the prevailing northeaster dies completely; March is the least windy month anywhere on the islands.

Mafia Island, Zanzibar.

Many visitors avoid Zanzibar in March, but on good days the glassy seas are wonderful for diving and snorkeling , with excellent visibility and few other visitors on the reefs.

Tropical beach in Zanzibar.

West-facing resorts are treated to simply incredible sunsets as vast banks of clouds glow pink and purple over the sea.

  • March is the start of pineapple season in Zanzibar, with pineapples so sweet you may wonder if you’ve ever tasted one before. Although some hotels and resorts in Zanzibar close, many others offer discounts, and March to May are the best months for deals. Glassy seas and spectacular sunsets are the rewards for those who travel to Zanzibar in the low season. Afternoon storms can be heavy, but most mornings are clear, and you’re more likely to find a piece of paradise all to yourself.
  • Some hotels and lodges close from March to May, so your preferred Zanzibar accommodation may not be available. The rains themselves put many people off, which is ideal if you’re after solitude, but a definite drawback if you’re not. March is undoubtedly the worst month for wind sports in Zanzibar. If that’s what you’re after, avoid this time of year.
  • Zanzibar in April

April is Zanzibar’s wettest month, the height of the main rainy season that runs from mid-March to the end of May. With the rains come slightly lower temperatures, but most days still climb above 30°C (86°F). A relatively windless month,

Matemwe beach in Zanzibar

April marks the transition between the north-eastern ‘kaskazi’ and southern ‘kusi’ winds.

Boardwalk over tropical waters, Zanzibar.

As the month progresses, the breeze gradually swings to the south, building slowly to its peak in June and July. Despite regular downpours in Zanzibar, April can still see some very good days.

The sea is still warm (28°C / 82°F), and the mornings can be clear and fresh. Storms build in the early afternoon and are usually short and fierce; only occasionally does the rain set in for a few consecutive days.

Weather-wise there’s little to distinguish one region from the next in April. Light winds and sudden storms are the norm across the islands.

Boat on Paje Beach.

It’s impossible to predict how much rain might fall and where. In one region, a downpour may cause extensive flooding, while just an hour away, it’s warm and dry.

Sunsets can be spectacular from the west-facing resorts in Zanzibar , but those on the east coast can enjoy breathtaking sunrises.

Sunset on a beach in the Michamvi Peninsula, Zanzibar.

April, in short, is a bit of a lottery. Choose your region based on the quality of the accommodation, and be prepared to spend at least a little time indoors.

  • April is Zanzibar’s quietest month and a great time to visit for the near-empty beaches. Low season rates may also apply, especially for stays of a week or longer. Between the cloudbursts, you’ll have some perfect, windless days, so if you have time to spend, then April can be ideal.
  • April is, on average, the cloudiest month across Zanzibar. Most days still see sunshine, but it’s not the best time to work on your tan. Some hotels and resorts also close during April, so your first-choice accommodation may not be available. The main disadvantage, however, is April’s unpredictable weather. Conditions can be idyllic but then rapidly change. Excursions of any kind become difficult to plan, and occasional flooding can affect both taxi transfers and public transport.
  • Zanzibar in May

Early May sees heavy rain throughout the Zanzibar archipelago , but conditions usually improve by the end of the month. Afternoon showers become shorter and lighter, and more consecutive sunny days fall in between.

As the skies clear, the seasonal ‘kusi’ wind freshens from the south, a steady, building breeze that can hit 20 to 30 km/h (11-17 knots).

With the rains’ slow withdrawal, temperatures steadily fall but seldom drop below a pleasant 28°C (82°F). By the end of May, more predictable weather returns to the islands of Zanzibar, heralding the start of the long, dry season that generally lasts until November.

As the kusi wind picks up from the south, the northern resorts enjoy the most wind shadow. The light to moderate breeze finds its way into all corners of the archipelago, but Kendwa , Nungwi , and the resorts around the northern Michamvi Peninsula tend to be calmer.

Pemba’s north-western Ngezi Peninsula , however, is still somewhat exposed and is at its windiest from May to July.

Aerial view of Prison Island, Zanzibar.

Paje and the other east coast kitesurfing hotspots generally don’t pick up until June, making May a good time for beginners in search of lighter winds and fewer people on the lagoons.

Throughout May, heavy downpours can hit any part of the islands, but good beach time is still very possible, especially towards the end of the month.

  • Quiet beaches and discounted hotels are the main advantages of visiting Zanzibar in May. By the end of the month, the rain has usually eased off, with beautiful, calm, clear days punctuated with the season’s final, spectacular storms.
  • Despite an increasing number of dry, sunny days, May’s major disadvantage remains the unpredictable weather. Fierce storms can still whip up at a moment’s notice, making planning any activities tricky. Some resorts and dive operators close completely for May, so check your options carefully before you travel.
  • Zanzibar in June

June marks the start of Zanzibar’s long dry season, and June itself is often the sunniest, driest month of the year. Daytime temperatures are warm, averaging around 28°C (82°F), with pleasant nights around 20°C (68°F) and generally low humidity.

By the middle of June, the southern ‘kusi’ wind is in full flow, a fresh, steady breeze that can blow hard up the eastern coasts. Wind speeds can get up to around 35 km/h (about 18 knots), which is ideal for kite surfers, but some days may be a bit blowy for beach tanning.

Beyond the protected reefs, the wind can also whip up the seas, especially along the southern coasts, which are at their roughest in June and July.

If you’re into wind sports, then Zanzibar Island’s eastern shores are for you. Paje is the island’s kite surfing capital , but all of the east coast’s major centers will also offer wind-based water sports.

Kitesurfing over tropical waters.

If it’s more relaxed beach time you’re after, then June should see you head for the north-facing resorts instead; the northern seas are also usually calmer in June, which is better for diving and snorkeling .

That said, if the wind really picks up, then even the north can get choppy, and on the whole, the best diving is usually later in the year.

Around Mafia, diving is only certain in the calmer waters of Chole Bay. June is also the start of Mafia’s turtle hatching season , a major highlight of the southern archipelago.

  • One of nature’s great spectacles takes place between June and September as thousands of tiny turtles dash for the sea. Juani Island, off Chole Bay, is the best place to see them, and guided boat tours from Mafia Island can be booked with the local turtle NGO, Sea Sense ( http://www.seasense.org/) .
  • Zanzibar in July

July is generally dry and warm across Zanzibar , with daytime temperatures averaging around 28°C (82°F). This is about as cool as the islands get throughout the year, but even so, the nights rarely dip below 18°C (64°F).

The surrounding seas are also at their coldest in July and August, but sea temperatures of 25°C (77°F) are still the norm, and the shallow lagoons often feel even warmer. July is Zanzibar’s windiest month, with a more or less constant, stiff breeze blowing from the south.

Boat anchored off Bwejuu beach, Zanzibar.

This southern ‘kusi’ wind can get up to 35 km/h (18 knots) but is far more gentle on the islands’ leeward sides.

When the kusi blows from the south, Zanzibar’s north-facing resorts are the most sheltered, so head to Nungwi and Kendwa if you’re after the calmest diving and beach conditions.

Elsewhere across the islands you can expect a light to moderate breeze daily, except on Zanzibar Island’s east coast, where there’s an ever-present stiff wind.

July is arguably the best month for wind sports in Paje , and you’ll find the beach and lagoon full of swishing, leaping kite surfers.

Across the islands, but on Pemba in particular, July is also the start of the clove harvest season, and the scent of cloves is everywhere as they lie in piles in the sun.

But perhaps the best place to be in Zanzibar is Stone Town , where the unmissable Festival of the Dhow Countries takes over the Old Fort district for the first two weeks of July each year.

  • Two of Zanzibar’s most vibrant cultural festivals take place in July: Stone Town’s Festival of the Dhow Countries (organized by ZIFF, the Zanzibar International Film Festival), which is held over two lively weeks at the beginning of the month and, at the end of the month, the Mwaka Kogwa festival which takes place in the southern village of Makunduchi. The Festival of the Dhow Countries has grown and grown in recent years into perhaps the largest cultural festival in East Africa. Incorporating music, film, and dance from all over Africa and Asia, it’s a reason all on its own to visit Zanzibar in July. Mwaka Kogwa is much smaller but no less energetic, an originally Persian new year festival that includes plenty of dancing, singing and even some mock fights, and attracts locals and foreigners from across the islands.
  • July is a busy month in Zanzibar, and you’ll need to book your accommodation well in advance. This is true all over the archipelago, but especially if you’re staying in Stone Town while the Festival of the Dhow Countries is on.
  • July is also not an ideal time for diving in Zanzibar. The protected northern reefs are usually unaffected, but the open water sites may be too windy and rough.
  • Zanzibar in August

August is the last of the slightly cooler months on Zanzibar . Hot days can still be over 30°C (86°F), but somewhere around 28°C (82°F) is more common.

Sea temperatures also reach their lowest in August, although far from icy at a very reasonable 25°C (77°F).

August to October is perhaps the most pleasant period on the archipelago: not too hot, not too humid, and with steadily softening breezes from the south.

By the middle of August, the southern ‘kusi’ wind begins to fade, although it usually stays strong enough for the kite surfers in Paje . August can be seen as a transition period in Zanzibar, a mix of perfect beach and diving days with some windy, choppy days thrown in.

Whale shark in the waters of Mafia Island, Zanzibar.

August is an excellent time to be anywhere on Zanzibar – only divers need to plan carefully, as some off-shore sites may be too rough. The southern kusi wind can still churn up the southern channels, and dive sites along the northern coasts tend to have calmer conditions.

Marlin in the waters of Zanzibar.

Although slowly fading, the kusi still draws kite surfers to Paje and both Paje and Matemwe offer good steady winds and flat lagoons for beginners.

In other parts of the archipelago, Pemba’s clove harvest is in full swing , and on Mafia’s Juani Island, it’s still a great time to see the hatching turtles .

For the calmest, most tranquil beach days, the northern coastlines remain best, especially Nungwi and Kendwa, which can be particularly serene .

  • Besides great beach days and good diving off the northern coasts, August is prime time for sport fishing off Zanzibar. Deep sea boat tours can be arranged to search for sailfish and marlin, which can be hooked off the east coast until February.
  • August is a busy time to be on Zanzibar and it’s essential to book well in advance. Budget accommodation is usually easier to find , but the more popular hotels and resorts – especially the smaller, more intimate boutiques – can fill up fast.
  • Zanzibar in September

If August is a great time to be on Zanzibar , then September just gets better. It’s one of the sunniest, driest months across the islands, with average daytime temperatures gradually climbing over 30°C (86°F).

The southern ‘kusi’ wind has blown steadily since May but now eases back to a cooling breeze. In Paje , some kitesurfing is still possible until October, but the season is slowly drawing to a close.

With the gentling breeze, the seas of Zanzibar are also calm, and by the middle of September, the more challenging deep-water dive sites are usually accessible.

Beach hammock in the sunset, Zanzibar.

The sea starts to warm up (to around 26°C / 79°F), and September and October can produce some of the best diving conditions of the year.

September is a wonderful month all over Zanzibar, but the Mafia archipelago has something special to offer. Not only are the turtles of Juani Island still hatching, but the calmer seas allow for some incredible diving in the deeper channels.

Here you’ll find colossal 3-meter grouper, and for even bigger thrills, it’s the start of the annual whale shark season.

Above the waves, September is ideal for the beach, and all the islands’ resorts are popular at this time of year. Nungwi and Kiwengwa can get particularly busy, but it’s quieter in the less developed regions such as Matemwe and Pingwe .

  • Swimming with whale sharks is one of the most astounding wildlife experiences on the planet, and these giant, gentle creatures begin to arrive off Mafia Island in September. By the end of the month, the water visibility increases – up to 25m (82ft) on the calmest days. All over Zanzibar, the diving is excellent, and the warm, sunny days make for perfect beach time too.
  • September’s major disadvantage is its popularity and unless you book well in advance, you may not get your first-choice hotel. The smaller boutiques can fill up especially fast as they’re often in the most sought-after areas, where the beaches are least busy.
  • Zanzibar in October

October is usually an idyllic time on Zanzibar , with light southerly breezes, clear skies, and calm seas. As the month progresses, the heat gradually builds, and daytime highs regularly top 30°C (86°F).

Nights are also warmer (over 20°C / 68°F) and get increasingly humid as the brief November monsoon draws near.

The monsoon’s exact arrival varies unpredictably each year, and some regions may see heavy rainfall before the end of the month. October is one of Zanzibar’s least windy periods, and ocean visibility is often excellent – up to 25m (82ft) or more.

Dhow floating in tropical waters of Zanzibar.

Sea temperatures also start to climb throughout October, reaching around 27°C (81°F) by the beginning of November.

Sunny days and calm seas are the norm in October, and no single region has a monopoly on the great weather. The beaches around Nungwi can be bustling, and Kiwengwa and Paje are also very popular and often full.

All the major resort areas can get busy in October, so if you’re looking for more exclusivity, then the smaller villas and boutiques around Matemwe and Pingwe are usually best.

Ras Kizimkazi is also a quiet option throughout the year, but whereas it can be pretty windy from June to August, by October, the light breeze is now cool and refreshing.

Pemba and Mafia are always much quieter than Zanzibar Island; both boast some of their best diving and snorkeling in October.

  • Calmer seas off Ras Kizimkazi mark the start of the dolphin spotting season. Tours can be arranged from Zanzibar Town, but with the lighter southerly wind, it’s also a great time of year to stay in Ras Kizimkazi itself. Further south, whale sharks are amassing off Mafia , with wonderful opportunities to swim with these giant beasts. October is an excellent month for diving across the archipelago. There’s generally superb visibility, and most, if not all, dive sites are accessible.
  • If you’re planning to visit in October, you’ll need to book well in advance, and you may need to avoid the busier regions if you’re after some privacy. There’s also always the chance of an early monsoon downpour, though these are less likely at the beginning of the month.
  • Zanzibar in November

November is the month of the ‘short rains’ in Zanzibar, a brief period of sporadic storms that may begin as early as mid-October and ease off during December.

These short rains are generally much lighter than the main wet season (from March to May), but consecutive days can be cloudy, and good beach tanning time is not guaranteed.

Boat sailing in sunset near Stone Town, Zanzibar.

That said, November mornings are still quite often clear, there’s very little wind, and there can be some very fine days too.

Throughout the month, temperatures continue to rise, with nights around 22°C (72°F) and daily highs above 30°C (86°F) in Zanzibar. Although sudden storms can hit unpredictably, the light winds can produce wonderfully glassy seas.

By the end of November sea temperatures are up to 29°C (84°F) and there’s great diving and snorkeling to be had , at the risk of a few squalls.

Visiting Zanzibar in November is not usually recommended, but it can still be worth the trip if you find a good deal. You may find yourself caught indoors now and then, but the storms rarely last long and can be beautiful over the sea.

As the rains ease off, the north-eastern ‘kaskazi’ picks up but rarely exceeds a light breeze this early in the season. Even so, the flattest seas are generally to the south – Ras Kizimkazi’s dolphin-spotting boat tours are ideal at this time of year.

There’s good diving to be had all over Zanzibar in November, but again the calmest water and best visibility are off the southern shores.

Mafia island , too, can receive some rain in November, but it’s still possible to swim with whale sharks and enjoy some of the best diving in the archipelago .

  • November’s highlights include glassy southern seas, great diving conditions just about everywhere, and attractive deals at some hotels and resorts. November is one of Zanzibar’s least busy months – a pro or a con, depending on what you’re looking for.
  • The main risk in November is the unpredictable weather, and although it’s generally warm and still, there’ll be some rain and several cloudy days. It’s certainly not Zanzibar’s best month for tanning, though you don’t necessarily need sunshine to swim in a 29°C (84°F) sea.
  • Zanzibar in December

Early December can see showers across Zanzibar , becoming more sporadic as the month passes. Temperatures throughout the islands gradually climb, and hot days can peak around 35°C (95°F).

December’s prevailing wind is the north-eastern ‘kaskazi,’ which gets increasingly fresh along the islands’ east coasts. As the northern wind builds, it whips up the sea, and the exposed northern coastline can get a bit rough.

December is a fairly unpredictable month when stunning beach days can give way to sudden storms. On balance, however, the forecast is good, with more chance of sunshine towards Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Zanzibar’s southern and western coasts are more sheltered in December, so head to Kendwa or Ras Kizimkazi for the calmest seas. Chumbe Island is also fairly protected from the northeaster and has a stunning coral reef for snorkeling .

Along Zanzibar Island’s east coast, the wind attracts the first kitesurfers of the short summer season.

The wind is usually not as strong as in June and July, and it can be a good time for beginners to learn. Paje is the east coast’s kitesurfing center, but Matemwe and Kiwengwa also offer good winds.

For diving , the southern dive sites tend to be better, and some open water sites off Pemba and Mafia may be too rough. Swimming with whale sharks is still possible off Mafia, and across the archipelago, the seas are at their warmest – up to 30°C by the end of the month.

  • December’s main highlights are the whale sharks off Mafia and the crystal-clear diving on Zanzibar’s southern reefs. Fresh mangos and dried cloves are piled high in the markets, and although Christmas isn’t widely celebrated, there’s a definite holiday atmosphere on Zanzibar’s streets.
  • Although locals don’t make a huge fanfare of Christmas, it’s still a popular time for visitors from abroad. Christmas on the beach is a wonderful novelty, but be sure to book well in advance if you’re planning to visit at this time of year.

See Zanzibar in Your Comfort

  • Affordable Zanzibar Holiday
  • Budget Friendly Zanzibar Holidays
  • Luxury Zanzibar Holiday

There are friendly, well-run, mid-range resorts scattered all across Zanzibar . And as with the more budget-friendly accommodation, you’ll find the most choice in Stone Town , Nungwi , and Paje/Jambiani .

All three areas in Zanzibar have a good selection of mid-range options, from larger resort-style hotels to laid-back, beach-chic bungalows.

Man leans on boat on Paje Beach.

If you don’t fancy relying on your own hotel’s chef each night, these are also the areas with the most affordable restaurants and bars in Zanzibar.

One new area in Zanzibar also deserves mention: the quiet stretch of beach between Bewjuu and Dongwe .

Jambiani Beach.

Here you’ll find a handful of small resorts and bungalows offering excellent service at an affordable price. Kiwengwa , Matemwe , and Kendwa also have a few noteworthy mid-range lodges, as does the more luxury-focused Michamvi Peninsula .

Pemba and Mafia are, for the most part, more exclusive, but you’ll still find one or two affordable lodges, albeit at the upper end. On Mafia, in particular, there are a few good options in Utende, aimed mainly at divers whose primary focus is the sea.

Highlights of an Affordable Zanzibar Holiday

If you’re interested in scuba diving , don’t pass up this world-class opportunity. Most visitors to Mafia Island go specifically to dive, with Chole Bay perhaps the finest coral garden in East Africa .

Mafia also offers excellent open-water diving (October to February has the most reliable weather), and there are magnificent dive sites all across the archipelago.

Single dives start at around $40 on Zanzibar Island but can be over $50 elsewhere if significant boat time is required.

Now would be a great time to learn if you’ve never dived before. There are top-notch PADI training centers all over Zanzibar, with courses starting at around $500 and up to $600 on Mafia and Pemba , where you pay for more exclusive conditions.

Diver with turtle in Pemba, Zanzibar.

If delving beneath the waves isn’t for you, then treat yourself to a dhow trip instead. Group excursions start at around $25 a head, but for a bit more, you can hire the entire vessel for the day.

Enjoy a lazy picnic on a far-off sandbar, a private snorkeling trip to an off-shore reef, or simply grab some beers and take a sunset cruise – there’s nothing quite like experiencing the Spice Isles of Zanzibar from the sea.

Travel Tips for an Affordable Zanzibar Holiday

  • You can pay by card in most larger resorts but expect to be charged a rather hefty commission. Some establishments may not accept card payments at all and, in any case, it’s always better value with cash. Officially, all accommodation must be paid in US dollars, and most activities are quoted in the same. The only cash machines you’ll find are in Stone Town , Chake Chake, and Kiwengwa , so it’s important to bring enough dollars with you. You’ll be able to change money at the airports, as well as in the major towns and at some of the larger hotels. Avoid the hotels unless you’re really in need, as they rarely offer very favorable rates.
  • March to May is the low (rainy) season on Zanzibar, and while some resorts close, others offer good deals. It’s always worth asking, even if not advertised – you never know what you might get. Good mid-range accommodation can come in at anything from $50 to $150 for a double room, depending mostly on beach access and views. Prime beachfront will always incur a premium, and there are some excellent reasonably-priced bungalows and villas if you’re prepared to walk a bit to the beach. All good mid-range resorts include breakfast in the bill, with guests free to get their other meals at restaurants elsewhere. A good seafood dinner will be $15 to $20 with drinks, while street vendors and the more low-key spots serve snacks and meals for between $5 and $10.

Zanzibar can certainly be done on a budget, but you’ll need to pick your regions with care. Starting in Stone Town , you’ll find a range of affordable guesthouses offering basic double rooms and B&B .

Further afield, there are two main budget areas between Paje and Jambiani .

Matemwe , northern Kiwengwa , Bewjuu , and Kizimkazi Mkunguni all have one or two good budget guesthouses, but the choices are more limited, and you may have to settle for something a bit back from the beach of Zanzibar.

Pemba and Mafia are not great budget destinations, although you’ll find some more affordable guesthouses in Chake Chake, Kilindoni, and Utende.

Beach on Pemba Island, Zanzibar.

That said, to make the most of these and the other smaller islands in the archipelago, you’ll most likely need to spend a bit more.

Highlights of Budget Friendly Zanzibar Holidays

Happily, lying on the beach is always free, and snorkeling gear can be hired for a few dollars almost anywhere. Local dive trips start at $40 a person, and dhow excursions can be from $30 to $80 a trip, depending on where you go and how many are in the boat.

If you’ve never dived before, Zanzibar is a superb place to start. Full PADI certification starts at around $500 a person, but for $100, you can try an introductory ‘Discover Scuba’ course which includes a pool dive, some theory, and a shallow sea dive to around 12m (39ft).

Whatever you do, don’t leave Zanzibar without doing a spice tour . These can be arranged in Stone Town , with prices starting at around $30 a person.

Travel Tips for Budget Friendly Zanzibar Holidays

  • If you’re planning to stay in Stone Town for a while, then book accommodation in advance for a few nights. This will give you somewhere to aim for when you arrive but won’t tie you down if it turns out to be less desirable. Once there, you can explore the old town on foot and move to a nicer spot if you need to. Don’t try this if you’re visiting in July, however, when Stone Town is packed for the Festival of the Dhow Countries.
  • You can employ this same strategy in Nungwi , Paje, and Jambiani , where there are plenty of good budget options within walking distance along the beach. You’ll find huts and bungalows that don’t even take advance bookings and survive exclusively on walk-in guests. As with Stone Town in July, there’s always some risk, and along the northern and eastern coasts, it’s busiest from July to October. Jambiani is currently one of the quieter stretches of beach and a good place to start if you’re worried about availability.
  • Be aware that the smaller, cheaper guesthouses almost always require cash, and there’s nowhere to draw money outside of Stone Town, Kiwengwa , and Chake Chake. Officially all accommodation must be paid for in US dollars, though Euros are increasingly accepted, and some budget hostels may take Tanzania shillings. The best option is to arrive with all your dollars in cash as you’ll get better rates than if you exchange on the islands. If you do need to change money (a few shillings can be useful for smaller purchases such as street food), then use a private bureau de change in Stone Town. The larger hotels often provide a FOREX service, but usually at much poorer rates.
  • Expect to pay $10 to $15 for a dorm bed in Stone Town and $40 to $60 for a clean double room anywhere. Single rooms are rare in Zanzibar, and you’ll often be charged the full rate for a double. Local food and basic drinks will set you back about $25 a day, so all-in-all, you’re looking at around $50 a person a day sharing for a decent guesthouse on a fairly tight budget.

Zanzibar does luxury supremely well, from treetop suites to private islands and all manner of barefoot bliss in between. There are world-class hotels and resorts across the archipelago , including some welcome new additions in Stone Town .

Boat on white sand beach in Zanzibar

But although a few days in Stone Town are essential to any holiday in Zanzibar, it’s the stunning beach-side boutiques and intimate island escapes that set these East African spice isles apart.

The most exclusive beach resorts are on Michamvi Peninsula , Ras Kizimkazi , Mafia , and Pemba Islands . You’ll find superb luxury hotels along all the major beaches, but these four regions have many of the best.

Whale shark in the waters around Mafia Island, Zanzibar

That is to say, these four plus a few spectacular tiny islets. For the ultimate tropical island experience , why not a luxury atoll for a week?

Highlights of a Luxury Zanzibar Holiday

There’s wonder and beauty all across Zanzibar, but at the best luxury lodges, you’ll feel you have it all to yourself. Most are tucked away on secluded, if not private, beaches or on small, pristine islands where there really is no one else.

Enjoy exclusive snorkeling reefs , private dhow cruises, and candlelit dinners with your toes in the sand, or spend the night in a houseboat with an underwater bedroom, a baobab treehouse, or a glorious Robinson-Crusoe-styled beach villa.

Exceptional levels of personal service are very much the norm on Zanzibar. That’s especially true of the smaller luxury boutiques, which only host a few guests at a time.

Travel Tips for a Luxury Zanzibar Holiday

  • One of the downsides of being small and exclusive is that bookings must be made quite far in advance. The high season runs from July to October, with a spike again from January to March. It can be hard to find availability during these times, especially if you’re looking for a longer stay. Longer stays, however, often mean substantial discounts (up to a third off for bookings of a week or more).
  • Combo beach and safari holidays are also very popular, and several resorts have sister lodges in mainland Tanzania . These often offer excellent all-inclusive deals, covering the full Big Five African safari experience , flight transfers, and kicking back on the beach.
  • Cards are usually accepted for extra activities or excursions, but carrying some US dollars in cash is a good idea to cover any sundries and tips. Visas can be acquired at the airport on arrival, but get them in advance, and you’ll avoid the queues. Flight transfers may or may not be included in your package – something to keep in mind as returns to Mafia or Pemba can add $300 to the bill. The flights, however, are a highlight in themselves and an excellent opportunity to see the azure archipelago from the air.

Holiday Styles and Options in Zanzibar

  • Zanzibar Holiday
  • Zanzibar Honeymoon

Few world destinations conjure such exotic visions as the spice islands of Zanzibar. Look beyond its postcard-perfect beaches, turquoise seas, and stunning luxury lodges; this archetypal island paradise is so much more than it first appears on a Zanzibar holiday.

Beneath the tranquil surface, a fascinating and turbulent past lies veiled; whispers of a time when giraffes were sent as gifts by sultans and spices were worth much more than gold.

Spices of Zanzibar.

The frenetic focal point of African, Arabian, Indian and Persian trade for over a millennium, this East African archipelago has harbored Portuguese carracks bound for India.

It has also been the staging post for some of the Victorian era’s greatest explorers – David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley to name just two.

But it’s not only sultans and sailors and dhows stuffed with spice. Zanzibar’s fascinating history has a dark side too.

For hundreds of years, her crowded slave market was the grim epicenter of a vast network that stretched inland to the shores of Lake Tanganyika, south around the Cape Peninsula, and northwards to Oman and the date palms of Arabia.

Prison Island, Zanzibar.

Today, evidence of this rich, troubled history can be readily found in Stone Town’s unique mix of Swahili, Arabic, and Indian architecture.

Stone Town building, Zanzibar.

This history is also evident in the thought-provoking museums, the fusion of fragrant cooking styles, and, of course, the ever-present scent of spices caught on the passing breeze.

Forodhani market in Zanzibar.

Visitors can enjoy locally-guided spice tours, cooking classes, stylish boutiques, and colorful markets awash with hand-crafted silver jewelry, leather goods, and clothes.

A typical market scene in Stone Town I Credit: Flickr

Away from the bustle of Zanzibar Town, the island’s beaches are some of the best in the world, and offshore, there’s scuba diving with turtles or whale sharks and sunset dhow cruises to deserted, tidal sandbars.

On the archipelago’s three larger islands, you’ll find a range of lodges and activities for every dream and budget.

The main Zanzibar Island (proper name ‘Unguja’) is the largest and busiest, then Pemba to the north with its excellent diving and laid-back vibe.

The more exclusive Mafia Island in the far south is the best place to see hatching turtles (between June and September).

Between these main landmasses, a scattering of smaller isles shelter protected reefs and some of the world’s most stunning barefoot luxury resorts.

A holiday to Zanzibar isn’t just a holiday to any tropical island but a unique blend of cultures and experiences, a chance to bask in an ancient archipelago with a still-tangible history like no other in the world.

Zanzibar’s islands have been inhabited for many hundreds of years and although ancient records refer to imported elephants and other iconic species, you won’t find any of Africa’s major land mammals here today.

For the best chance of seeing Zanzibar’s smaller, rarer, and in some cases, endemic species, head to Jozani Forest Reserve just south of Zanzibar Town or Ngezi Forest Reserve on Pemba Island.

Jozani is home to the fabulous Kirk’s red colobus monkey, which with its distinctive grey tufts and ochre-red back, is one of the rarest sights in Africa.

Even rarer and much harder to spot are the diminutive Zanzibar suni, Ader’s duiker, and Pemba blue duiker, all species of antelope found only in the archipelago.

The very rare diminutive Zanzibar Suni I Credit: Wikipedia

The Pemba flying fox (really a huge fruit bat with a wingspan over 1.5m/5ft) is another native to the northernmost island, while Chumbe and Chapwani Islands are known for their giant coconut crabs.

Nearby Changu (Prison Island) is known for its resident (though introduced) giant tortoises.

Over 200 species of bird have also been recorded across the islands, including the Pemba sunbird and Pemba scops owl, both endemic to Pemba Island, making it perfect for a birding holiday .

Beyond the mangrove and coconut forests, shallow tidal lagoons give way to stunning coral reefs, and a whole new world unfolds beneath the waves.

Zanzibar is a breathtaking destination for diving and snorkeling , though overfishing and careless management have damaged some areas.

Turtles in the waters of Zanzibar.

Chumbe Island, south of Zanzibar Town, has a protected reef reserved for snorkeling.

For diving, the best sites are off Pemba and Mafia – the former known for its spectacular wall dives and open-ocean pelagic fish and the latter for Chole Bay, arguably the best coral garden in East Africa .

Visit Mafia between September and March, and you’ll also have the chance to swim with whale sharks, while from June to September nearby Juani Island hosts one of the world’s most special sights – the mad seaward dash of hatching turtles.

It’s impossible to soak in everything Zanzibar has to offer without maxing out your visa and staying the full three months.

The main Zanzibar Island itself is already more than can be explored on the average summer holiday, and Pemba and Mafia are beautiful destinations in their own right.

With its superb diving, myriad islands and inlets, rich cultural history, delicious seafood, and broad mix of laid-back, luxurious (and often very affordable) lodges and hotels, Zanzibar pulls visitors back time and again.

Happily, a trend towards sustainable tourism is also increasingly evident in recent years, allowing visitors to support the excellent work many operators are doing to promote local development and wildlife conservation.

But whether you’re combining the islands with a mainland safari or treating yourself to the spice isles alone, Zanzibar is a paradise not to be missed, a dream that only gets stronger once you first touch its shores.

If you’re looking for a romantic island vacation, look no further – a romantic holiday in Zanzibar is a thrilling destination for couples. With a fascinating history and stunning natural beauty, its exotic blend of experiences makes a Zanzibar Honeymoon unique.

Here you’ll find secluded beaches, elegant modern villas, sundowner dhow cruises, and Arabian-styled boutique hotels on your Zanzibar luxury honeymoon .

And whereas in the past, many couples would head straight to the beach, there’s now a growing number of intimate luxury hotels and restaurants in Stone Town that are establishing the enigmatic old quarter as a romantic honeymoon destination in its own right.

Although the gorgeous coastline is a must, any romantic Zanzibar Island honeymoon should include some time in Stone Town.

The old town’s maze of narrow streets and alleys have attracted adventurous couples for years, and new cozy restaurants and intimate hotels have only added to the quarter’s charm.

The twisting passageways are also home to an increasing number of specialty shops and boutiques stocking high-quality, made-in-Zanzibar jewelry, clothing, and accessories.

High above the streets, rooftop restaurants serve intriguing cocktails and delicious seafood, with glorious sunset views across the palm trees and over the bay.

Outside of Stone Town, the Michamvi Peninsula has arguably the best selection of smaller, quieter hotels, with plenty of choices for an unforgettable romantic Zanzibar honeymoon break.

Kendwa and Matemwe also have some good romantic couples’ resorts that would be perfect for a Zanzibar honeymoon.

However, for the ultimate in privacy and exclusivity, head to Pemba or Mafia , or one of the smaller private islands scattered throughout the archipelago.

There are some truly magical experiences to be had on your Zanzibar Island honeymoon, from spectacular private tree houses to a houseboat’s underwater bedroom.

Highlights of a Zanzibar Honeymoon

  • The experiences you have on your Zanzibar honeymoon will stay in your heart forever. Swim with dolphins off Ras Kizimkazi , or enroll in a scuba diving course together. Enjoy a sumptuous candlelit meal in the dreamlike ruins of Mtoni Palace, or board a sunset dhow cruise and sip G&Ts with your toes in the sea.
  • A boat trip of some sort is essential in Zanzibar, and there are few things more romantic than renting your own dhow for the day. Visit remote tidal sandbars and snorkel pristine coral bays on your Zanzibar luxury honeymoon. The more upmarket lodges will often have their own dhows for guests to use.
  • Enjoy a quiet beach, sunset deck, or moonlit dinner on the white sands of this island getaway. Zanzibar offers classic romance in spades. The hardest part will be to choose which experiences you would like to do on your romantic Zanzibar honeymoon.

Travel Tips for your Zanzibar Honeymoon

  • Across the islands, the smaller, upmarket boutiques tend to fill up quickest and should always be secured well ahead of time. These are usually the best hotels for couples; some have a couples-only policy or don’t allow young kids.
  • There’s no need to hire a car in Zanzibar unless you want to explore every corner of the island on your Zanzibar honeymoon. All the larger hotels and resorts will be happy to arrange transfers, and in any case, the most travel you’ll likely do is a long evening walk along the beach.
  • Be aware that homosexuality is illegal in Zanzibar, but most hotels and resorts have no problem with same-sex couples. Outside of the resorts, public affection is frowned upon, and it’s considered polite for even same-sex couples to be discreet. Bikinis and shorts are fine on the beach, but both sexes should cover shoulders and legs when walking around town.

Who is Travelling to Zanzibar with you?

  • Family Holiday in Zanzibar
  • Solo Holiday in Zanzibar

A Zanzibar vacation is simply fantastic for families. It’s safe and laid back, and there’s plenty for kids to do. Once you arrive, the transfers are quick and easy – just a few minutes to your hotel in Stone Town or, at most, an hour and a half to the furthest beach resort.

Hotels and resorts all over the archipelago cater specifically to families with kids on their Zanzibar vacation .

You’ll find understanding staff, large suites or family rooms, private bungalows and villas, and even specially supervised children’s activities, so you can chill undisturbed on the beach.

With most of the islands’ beaches protected by wide coral lagoons, there’s safe splashing and swimming all along the coast. Some resorts have large private dhows and offer thrilling snorkeling trips to offshore sandbars.

These may need to be specially booked in advance, but they’ll have your kids playing at ‘pirates of Zanzibar’ long after you’ve returned home.

Though the food can be exotic too, the more familiar fare is readily available. If the octopus curry doesn’t (for some reason) grab them, burgers or pasta will be on the menu on your Zanzibar family vacation.

All in all, Zanzibar is an incredibly easy place to travel and create unique memories with your family that will be treasured for years to come.

Dhow construction in Nungwi, Zanzibar.

There are excellent family resorts all over Zanzibar, but you’ll find the most choice on the main Zanzibar Island, Unguja. In the north, Nungwi and Kendwa both have good options, though here, you’ll find more of a party crowd.

Along the Michamvi Peninsula , the beaches tend to be quieter, with a number of upmarket resorts that also welcome families. In the southeast of the island, Jambiani is also worth exploring. It’s a laid-back stretch of beach with a range of family accommodation.

Although Pemba has one or two first-rate family resorts, the choices are fewer, and the range of kid-friendly activities is more limited.

Mafia also has fewer options than Unguja, but some resorts cater specifically to families, and there’s a chance to see hatching turtles on your Zanzibar vacation.

Highlights of a Family Holiday in Zanzibar

  • The spectacle of hundreds of tiny turtles tottering towards the sea is a wonderful opportunity for conservation education and an experience the whole family will never forget. Visit Mafia between June and September, and you can take a day trip to see the hatchlings on nearby Juani Island. The entire excursion is a highlight, including the short boat ride and the enthusiastic local guides. If you can’t make it to Mafia, then there’s also the Mnarani Natural Aquarium in Nungwi, a community-run project that does a huge amount for local turtle conservation and where you can see rescued turtles up close.
  • Other nature excursions include boat trips from Zanzibar Town to see the resident giant tortoises on Changuu (also known as ‘Prison’) Island and, further south, day trips or overnight stays on Chumbe Island, where the focus is on conservation and education – not to mention the enormous coconut crabs!
  • Back on land, the Zanzibar Butterfly Centre is a 45-minute drive from Zanzibar Town, on the southern outskirts of Jozani Forest. With over 30 species and thousands of individual butterflies, the center is a must for children of all ages. Finally, don’t leave the islands without doing a spice tour. They’re a great way to see the plantations outside of Zanzibar Town, interact with local farmers, and discover where spices come from. Fresh coconut and seasonal fruit can also be sampled, and it’s a great day out, though more suited to slightly older kids.

Travel tips for your Zanzibar Vacation

  • There are a number of excellent resorts and hotels with plenty of experience in family travel. They’re not hard to find and are the best way to ensure a hassle-free holiday. They’ll usually be able to arrange taxis or transfers, not only to and from the airport but also to fun family activities in the area. If you’re looking for some time to yourself, aim for a resort with a children’s club and/or nursery. Some of these clubs are remarkably well-run and offer a wide variety of kids’ activities, from supervised water sports to arts and crafts and village tours.
  • There is one important concern with any trip to Zanzibar: the relatively low but ever-present risk of malaria. Preventative prophylaxis drugs are available, including safe options for children. Consult your doctor before you travel, and be aware that the cooler, drier period between May and September tends to have fewer mosquitoes, but there is some risk in all seasons across all of the islands.

Traveling on your own presents some unique challenges. Will you be safe? Will you get lonely? Will you be able to make the most of the activities on offer?

Then there are all those varying priorities – a comfortable hammock and a good book for a week, or immersion in the local culture, great food, perhaps the chance to meet like-minded people?

Zanzibar caters to all kinds of solo travel. It’s safe, affordable, and easy to get around. There are places to go if you’re looking for a party and plenty of more low-key areas if you’re not.

For a tropical island paradise, there’s an extraordinary variety of experiences available and a rich cultural history that’s never far away.

Though at times loud and chaotic, it’s a wonderfully easy place to travel – in fact, there may not be anywhere else quite as relaxed in all of Africa.

Where you head will depend on what you’re looking for and also on the time of year. Nungwi is perhaps the islands’ most happening beach holiday destination, especially in September/October and again from December to March.

Nearby Kendwa, though quieter, hosts Zanzibar’s best full-moon beach parties, and Kendwa and Nungwi are good places to meet fellow travelers.

Paje , on the southeast, can also get quite lively, particularly from June to August when the kite surfers arrive in force.

What You Need To Know

  • Natural Attractions of Zanzibar
  • Highlights of Zanzibar

Zanzibar’s islands have been inhabited for many hundreds of years. Although ancient records refer to imported elephants and other iconic species, you won’t find any of Africa’s major land mammals here today.

For the best chance of seeing Zanzibar’s smaller, rarer, and in some cases, endemic species, head to Jozani Forest Reserve just south of Zanzibar Town or Ngezi Forest Reserve on Pemba Island .

Jozani is home to the fabulous Kirk’s red colobus monkey, which with its distinctive grey tufts and ochre-red back, is one of the rarest sights in Africa.

The Pemba flying fox (really a huge fruit bat with a wingspan over 1.5m) is another native to the northernmost island.

Chumbe and Chapwani Islands are known for their giant coconut crabs, and nearby Changu (Prison Island) for its resident (though introduced) giant tortoises.

Over 200 species of bird have also been recorded across the islands, including the Pemba sunbird and Pemba scops owl, both endemic to Pemba Island, making it a must on your itinerary if you are a birdwatcher .

Beyond the mangrove and coconut forests, shallow tidal lagoons give way to stunning coral reefs, and beneath the waves, a whole new world unfolds.

Zanzibar is a breathtaking destination for diving and snorkeling , though overfishing and careless management have damaged some areas. Chumbe Island, south of Zanzibar Town, has a protected reef that is reserved for snorkeling only.

For diving, the best sites are off Pemba and Mafia – the former known for its spectacular wall dives and open-ocean pelagic fish and the latter for Chole Bay, arguably the best coral garden in East Africa .

Visit Mafia between September and March and you’ll also have the chance to swim with whale sharks, while from June to September nearby Juani Island hosts one of the world’s most special sights – the mad seaward dash of hatching turtles.

Zanzibar is an incredibly beautiful island

The main Zanzibar Island itself is already more than can be explored on the average summer holiday, and Pemba and Mafia are wonderful destinations in their own right.

With its superb diving, myriad islands and inlets, rich cultural history, delicious seafood and broad mix of laid back, luxurious (and often very affordable) lodges and hotels, Zanzibar pulls visitors back time and again.

But whether you’re combining the islands with a mainland safari or treating yourself to the spice isles alone, Zanzibar is a paradise not to be missed , a dream that only gets stronger once you first touch its shores.

Zanzibar offers several popular wildlife reserves to explore during a safari, such as Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park and Ngezi Forest Reserve. These reserves are home to diverse wildlife, including the endemic red colobus monkeys.

Age restrictions may vary for Zanzibar safari tours. It’s best to check with your tour operator for specific guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.

The best time for a Zanzibar safari is during the dry season from June to October, offering pleasant weather and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.

The cost of a Zanzibar safari vacation package varies depending on factors like duration, accommodations, activities, and season. It’s recommended to contact reputable tour operators for personalized pricing.

Travellers visiting Zanzibar for a safari should ensure they have up-to-date routine vaccinations and consult healthcare professionals for personalized advice on vaccinations, malaria prevention, and general health precautions.

A Zanzibar safari offers encounters with diverse wildlife, including red colobus monkeys, Sykes’ monkeys, various bird species, and reptiles like tortoises. Coastal areas also provide opportunities to spot dolphins and sea turtles.

It’s recommended to allocate at least 3 to 5 days for a fulfilling Zanzibar safari adventure, allowing ample time to explore the reserves and enjoy wildlife encounters.

When packing for a Zanzibar safari, include lightweight and breathable clothing in neutral colours. Essential items may include comfortable shoes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera, and necessary medications.

Destinations

A Tanzanian safari tour is, truly, one of the great holiday options on earth. Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar are all names considerably more famous than Tanzania itself! The great wildebeest migration occurs for 365 days each year, almost two million animals moving across the Serengeti eco-system always within Tanzania. There is more, much, much more. Nyerere (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is Africa’s largest national park. Lake Victoria, bordering Serengeti and the new Burigi-Chato park, is the second largest expanse of fresh water in the world. Saadani is an entirely unique wildlife preserve, fronted by Indian Ocean beaches and just a few miles from Zanzibar. The list is very long for this never-to-be-forgotten holiday destination.

Saadani Elephants

From 2010-2014 our Saadani Research Centre was the hub for an elephant collaring programme devised to assess the viability of traditional corridors used by the great pachyderms to move between protected areas. The work has vastly improved our understanding of the elephant population of Saadani and has led to us lobbying hard to protect vital habitat.

Zanzibar: Where Beach Honeymoon Meets Safari Adventure!

Zanzibar might be one of the best beach honeymoon destinations of the world… beautiful white sandy beaches and coral reefs, comfortable accommodations, and transparent blue sea, like in the movies. And did you know? Zanzibar is located only 15 miles off the coast of Tanzania. Which means that you can quickly and easily fly to the Tanzanian mainland and go on an amazing wildlife safari, meet the Tanzanian population, discover their culture and see a lot of animals. This is your chance to meet the Big 5! Safari and beach holiday: is this your dream vacation?

Zanzibar vacation

Imagine a dream holiday to the tropical island Zanzibar.  This bounty island is a paradise, offering the world’s most beautiful beaches and coral reefs. Miles and miles of white sandy beaches sprinkled with palm trees, surrounded by the clear azure waters of the Indian Ocean. Apart from laid-back beach life, Zanzibar also has a colorful culture and history. Stone Town is well worth a visit. This fascinating old city offers so many nice markets, restaurants and historical sightseeing’s.

Zanzibar Island is part of the Zanzibar archipelago, together with Pemba and Mafia and many smaller islands. These islands are also called the Spice Islands because of their rich history in the spice trade and many spice plantations. Great beach destinations to wash off the dust after your safari.

Zanzibar beaches

Zanzibar offers the world’s most beautiful beaches. Soft white sandy beaches surrounded by colourful coral reefs and the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar island has about 25 beaches, sprinkled with fishing villages. Should you stay north or rather choose the south or east coast of Zanzibar?

North: Zanzibar’s best beaches are on the north and east coast of the island, all with crystal white sand and colourful coral reefs. Nungwi and Kendwa are one of the most popular beaches since they do not have to deal with high and low tides. It has a chilled atmosphere with numbers of restaurants, bars and accommodation options. So if you seek real peace and privacy you should visit another part of the island (like the east or south). The north is home to villages like Uroa, Pongwe, Kiwengwa, Nungwi and Kendwa.

East: At the east coast of the island you will find the most idyllic beaches. Along the eastern coastline runs a beautiful coral reef, a top world spot for snorkelling and diving. You can immerse yourself in the abundance of marine life, such as sea horses, turtles and many tropical fish. The beaches at this east coast are very tidal. During low tide you can take a walk on the beach and enjoy the ocean views. If you love wind- or kite surfing this is the right place for you. Matemwe beach is the longest and one of the most beautiful ones at this site of the island. Like in the north, there is a wealth of accommodation options.

South-East: This part of the island is known for its long stretch of soft sandy beaches. It is the best spot on the island for sailing or kite- and windsurfing, thanks to steady winds. Hop on a traditional wooden sailboat (dhow) and sail the ocean, or go swimming with dolphins at Kizimkazi (south). Here you will find little villages like Jambiani, Paje and Bwejuu. These small fishing village have a nice timeless atmosphere with friendly people. One of our favourite villages is Jambiani. Check out why we think  Jambiani is the place to be in Zanzibar .

South-West: The south west coast is a bit more remote with fewer lodges and deserted beaches. The beaches in west and south of Zanzibar are less popular, although there are some beautiful beaches with gentle tides. If you visit the south, do not forget to go to Menia Bay Conservation Area. This is a spectacular underwater world for divers. The western coast is home to the fascinating old Stone Town, the cultural and historical centre of Zanzibar.

Exursions during your Zanzibar holiday

Best time to visit Zanzibar

The most popular time to visit Zanzibar is during the dry season, from June to October and from December to February. However, Zanzibar Island is a great beach destination all-year round. Even during the wet season (mid-March, April, May, November) it is beautiful, since the rain showers don’t last much longer than 30 minutes and the temperatures still remain around 28 C. February is the hottest month in Zanzibar (average 28 C), while July (average 24 C) is the coldest. Given its tropical climate, it’s always a good time to visit Zanzibar.

Zanzibar Hotels

Zanzibar offers a wealth of lodges, hotels and resorts. It has everything ranging from basic accommodation to ultra-luxury. Tanzania Specialist knows most of the accommodation Zanzibar so you can always contact us for advice. We prefer the personal atmosphere of the small bed & breakfast lodges on the island. The staff is so friendly and will do everything you make sure you have a great time. Another benefit of bed & breakfasts is that you can explore other restaurants and bars during the day and evening. There are so many great places to eat and have a drink, with beautiful views over the ocean and a great ambiance.

Zanzibar holiday reviews

“Zanzibar is a fantastic, beautiful island. I stayed in the village Jambiani and the Zanzibari (local people) are so friendly and welcoming. They are always up for a chat. The beaches, spice farms, forests and little villages are so beautiful. The only drawback i can think of is the lack of museums, but it can also be I did not went to the right places. There are so many nice restaurants and bars on the island where you can eat delicious local or western meals and dance.”

“Zanzibar is a great beach destination you don’t want to miss when you visit Tanzania. It is a paradise and the perfect place to end your safari. We stayed at the eastcoast of the island where you can find amazing beaches. The beaches are pretty quiet with no annoying beach boys. We have eaten delicious sea food for a fair price at several restaurants.”

Andere gave Zanzibar excursies:

  • Kruidenexcursie: bekijk de kruidenplantages en zie hoe men in Zanzibar kruiden en fruit kweekt.
  • Kitesurfen (in Paje, Kiwengwa en Nungwi).
  • Mountainbike-excursie over Zanzibar.

Zanzibar Vakantie: veelgestelde vragen
