Vallouise - Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Hautes-Alpes

Nestling in the heart of Écrins National Park in an incredibly beautiful natural setting, the charming village of Vallouise has preserved its traditional architecture, which includes typical houses with wooden balconies and picturesque fountains. Decorated with frescoes, the 15th-century Saint-Étienne church is home to a Pietà in polychrome wood and a Baroque altarpiece. The chapel of the Pénitents, located in the same square as the church, features pretty wall paintings.

Snow sports fans can devote themselves to their favourite activity at the winter sports resort of Puy-Saint-Vincent , 5 km from Vallouise.

Vallouise, a small typical mountain village

Vallouise is located in the Hautes-Alpes just 20 km from Briançon and is a traditional Winter destination offering a whole range of activities. The little village of Vallouise is also of great architectural interest, with its many sun dials, and sells very good local produce for you to enjoy when you get back from a day on the pistes or a lovely walk in the snow… The region has an exceptional climate with over 300 days of sunshine per year and very good snow cover.

—  Discover the resort of Pelvoux Vallouise on video!  —

Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, a walk? Take your pick !

— A wide range of activities…  —

Vallouise is located very close to two family ski resorts: the resort of Pelvoux Vallouise and the resort of Puy- Saint-Vincent.

The ski resort of Pelvoux Vallouise is just 5 minutes from Vallouise and has 25 km of groomed pistes, running from 1250 m to 2330 m altitude.

The resort of Puy-Saint-Vincent is 15 minutes from Vallouise and is a modern resort that has 75 km of tree-lined pistes through the larch woods. The ski area goes from 1400 m to 2750 m altitude.

During your stay in Vallouise, you can also make the most of the Serre Chevalier ski area, which is less than 30 km from Vallouise and discover the Montgenèvre ski area too. The resort of Serre Chevalier has 6+ day liftpasses (Grande Galaxie) which offer you 1 free ski day in another resort (Montgenèvre, Les deux Alpes, Puy Saint Vincent…).

Ski from the door of your chalet!

The ski area of Vallouise and Les Vigneaux has over 30 km of groomed, marked pistes and is an ideal site for both beginners and experienced cross-country skiers to enjoy skiing in the forest.

You can also cross-country ski in the Puy-Saint-Vincent ski area, at the site of Ailefroide, and in the ski area in the valley of Freissinières.

The Pays des Ecrins is perfect for anyone who enjoys ski touring, and the possibilities are endless. Discover wild, unspoilt valleys, glaciers, and unique mountainsides in a magnificent setting that is off the beaten track.

Here are a few suggestions of routes: La Blanche, Les Crètes de Reychard, Les Querettes, La Condamine…

— Snowshoeing and fun activities for all the family  —

You can also set out snowshoeing from your chalet for a family walk along one of the suggested routes. By taking the Gyr route, which leaves from Vallouise, you can reach Pelvoux, either by foot or with snowshoes, and depending on the weather conditions, you can then carry on snowshoeing to Ailefroide. The route along the plains is also ideal for a walk in the snow.

Snowshoeing is an activity open to almost all, giving you the chance to enjoy the nature, pine forests, and faunaand to walk through little hamlets and villages steeped in history.  Your kids will also love sledging down the slopes.

And for those who prefer ice skating…there are two natural ice rinks in Pelvoux-Vallouise at 1250 m altitude and Puy-Saint-Vincent at 1600 m altitude. More information is available at the Vallouise tourist information centre.

The region’s unspoilt mountainside is a perfect setting for dog sleighing! You can also discover and climb the ice waterfalls(activity open to all). See the guides’ office for more information.

And if you love thrills and incredible sky views, at Pelvoux you can organize a paragliding trip.

— Traditional villages  —

The small village of Vallouise has a real architectural wealth with all its sun dials. The Pays des Ecrins has a religious heritage rich in churches and chapels and a strong industrial heritage, particularly in Argentière la Bessée with the Fournel silver mines and the mining museum.  You can also make the most of your stay to explore Briançon citadel, which is the highest town in France, at 1,326 metres altitude. Its fortifications are classed a Unesco world heritage site.

Local Crafts and Produce

During your holidays in Vallouise, meet the local craftsmen from this typical mountain village and discover Vallouise sandstone pottery, the Vallouise artisans’ centre with its products from the Hautes-Alpes (honey, liqueurs, Alpine beer, dry sausages, pâtés, jams, home-made bread, and wine), the honey centre… You can enjoy a traditional mountain dinner in one of the village’s little restaurants, with raclette, tartiflette, pizzas cooked in a wood oven, cold-meat platters…

At the very end of the Vallouise Valley, Ailefroide will be an essential visit during your stay in the Pays des Écrins

Ailefroide is a hamlet sheltered from all external influence, with the exception of the mountains as a playground. It is a silent calming place, an experience that you can’t afford to miss.

At the foot of Mont Pelvoux, Ailefroide is a timeless hamlet (part of the Pelvoux municipality) that has maintained its authentic character through its typical stone houses. This natural classified site is only inhabited during the summer.

vallouise tourist office

Ailefroide is a hot spot for mountaineering and is France’s second site after Chamonix Mont Blanc. It is the last stage on the way to the major mountaineering routes to the south of the Écrins massif.

It is without a doubt the ideal base camp for all mountaineering, climbing or hiking enthusiasts. It is from here that you can set off to take on the multi-pitch routes in the Pays des Écrins. Many climbers from all over the world come here for its renowned bouldering site. Hiking routes start from the village: the Celse-Niere Valley is among the places to see.

vallouise tourist office

In a few words, Ailefroide is a soothing place due to the change of scenery it provides. It is free of any disturbance and ideal for rejuvenation with the mountains and silence as sole companions. In spring, you can reach it by the road that leads to the well-known Pré de Madame Carle and the most beautiful glaciers in the Écrins National Park.
