ms The World Review

Review of ms the world.

The 2002-built MS The World cruise ship is currently the world's largest privately-owned cruise vessel. The boat serves as a residential community and is owned by its residents. The relatively small group of very very rich passengers are from ~40 countries and most of them actually live on the ship.

The vessel (IMO number 9219331) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311213000) and registered in Nassau .

MS The World travels the globe, staying from 2 to 5 days in most ports of call. The Captain changes ports and destinations by vote. Some of the residents live full time while others board the ship periodically throughout the year. The ship's operator is ResidenSea (a company headquartered in Miramar, Florida USA).

Similar "residence cruise ship" concepts are Utopia (2022-built, managed by Utopia Residences), Narrative (2023-built, managed by Storylines Residences), Njord (2025-built, managed by Ocean Residences), Dark Island (2025-built, by Clydebuilt). You can also see CruiseMapper's articles about the residential boat Marquette (USA river cruise ship concept) and How to Buy a Cruise Ship .

MS The World cruise ship

The vessel carries between 100 and 300 residents and their guests. It is owned by 142 different families from 19 countries - approx 50% from North America, 35% from Europe, 15% from Asia-Australia-South America-South Africa. Ship residents plan the cruise itineraries and decide which destinations to visit. Since 2002, the liner is homeported in Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale, FL USA) . In the period 2002-2018, it visited around 900 different ports and destinations in 140 countries - and each cruise was chosen by the residents.

MS The World cruise ship

The unique idea about ms The World ship belongs to Knut U. Kloster- his family has a long history in the cruise ship industry. The hull of the new vessel was built by Oresundsvarvet Shipyard (Landskrona, Sweden) and towed to Fosen Mekaniske Verksted (Rissa, Norway) for completion. Cruise ship The World was launched in the spring of 2002, and in October 2003 was delivered to the residents.

MS The World cruise ship

MS The World is environmentally friendly ship - the first of its size to burn marine diesel, not heavy bunker fuel, which allows the ship to call in areas banned for burning heavy fuel. The World ship is also the first to feature Scanship unique wastewater cleaning system - in it wastes are filtered by a flotation system.

In January 2016, Wartsila Corporation announced that the residential ship The World will be retrofitted with Wartsila Advanced Wastewater treatment system and Wartsila Nacos Platinum system for navigation and external communication purposes.

MS The World cruise ship

The Wartsila Advanced Wastewater solution replaces an existing system and keeps the vessel in full compliance with IMO's (International Maritime Organization) requirements concerning the prevention of pollution from ships.

The World ship residents are able to "stay connected" through phone and Internet capabilities in their shipboard home offices, to conduct business effectively from the comfort of own residences while exploring numerous cultures and destinations on the continuous global journeys. Telephone and internet services on The World cruise ship allow resident owners to go on with their businesses efficiently from wherever the World ship happens to be.

ms The World cruise ship apartments (cabins)

The World ship's 165 Residences ranging in types from Studios to 3-Bedroom Penthouses and 6-Bedroom Penthouse Suite (for up to 12 passengers). All staterooms have been sold, but there are a number of Residences which are available for resale and some for rental. In 2020 was announced that Residence 801 (3-bedroom, 3-bathroom, wraparound balcony apartment aft on deck 8 ) is for sale.

There are also additional annual maintenance fees based on apartments' square footage. The cruise ship provides 40x studios, 19x 1-Bedroom and 2-Bedroom Studio Apartments, 106x 2-Bedroom and 3-Bedroom Apartments, 88x Suites. Prices vary and are based on size, deck location, decor, market conditions.

MS The World cruise ship cabin (balcony apartment)

Four of the world's most renowned interior design companies have been contracted to shape styles and design The World ship's 2- and 3-bedroom apartments and public rooms. Names list includes Nina Campbell (UK), Juan Pablo Molyneux (JP Molyneux Studio), Di Pilla (TMT Design), Yran & Storbraaten (maritime design).

ms The World ship prices - apartment cost, rentals, fees

First of all, this is a modern big cruise ship you can actually live on. Well, you and me probably not, but celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Madonna, for example, own suites on it. So if you can afford the below apartment prices, you'll buy yourself the pleasure to enjoy a celebrity company - once and awhile. The choice includes 165 top-luxury apartments, ranging in category from studios to 3-bedroom suites.

MS The World cruise ship cabin (window apartment)

Studios cost - USD 600,000 (initially sold at USD 90,000). Two-Bedroom (Ocean Residence) apartments cost - USD 2-3 million. Suites cost ~USD 12-13 million (initially sold at USD 6 million).

Short-term rentals - you can rent some of MS The World's apartments (depending on category) for between ~USD 550 Studio (per person per night, min for 5 days) and ~USD 20,000 (Suite rentals, per month). Some Ocean Residences are also available for rent - at ~USD 2100 a day. Discounts are available for repeat customers.

Future apartment owners on The World should also know that ship service fees (depending on the property) start from USD 60,000 and go up to USD 300,000 a year. These fees cover onboard service staff/crew, fuel, maintenance (including drydocking ), port charges, food and beverages. USD 8 million is the entry fee. This amount of money buys you a lease expiring in the distant 2052. As to the maintenance fees mentioned above - they are ~5-6% of the Apartment's sale price. As to the ship's occupancy - it rarely goes above 200 passengers (owners and their guests).

The ResidenSea company has the policy of not revealing who the clients/buyers are, but they assure that MS The World doesn't have residents with criminal records. Latest news confirms that all the ship's Studios and 3-Bedroom apartments are sold out. But there's always a chance some owner to decide to sell, right? And to sweeten the deal, they advertise that you can enjoy on The World ship - for absolutely free - Spa treatments at "Clinique La Prairie", to shop at the Graff's Boutique or to leisurely play at the ship's Mini-Golf Course. If you are a prospective buyer, you also must submit a list of your assets, which will be duly verified by the ResidenSea's accountants and lawyers.

The World ship is a tax haven - for everybody willing to spend most of the year at sea, away from home. Living on this vessel has tax implications because you're absent for a certain time in a year in your country (tax laws in your home country still apply).

Next table shows ResidenSea brochure (source) pricing on apartments for sale in 2016-2018 and the property's annual maintenance fee.

Nest are shown rental prices (per night in USD, rates 2018) for:

  • Studio (sized 290-330 ft2 / 27-31 m2) - $1850
  • Studio (sized 330-335 ft2 / 31 m2) - $1800
  • Studio (sized 620-845 ft2 / 58-79 m2) - $2400
  • 1-bedroom apartment (sized 580-675 ft2 / 54-63 m2) - $2,200
  • 2-bedroom apartment (sized 870-1010 ft2 / 81-94 m2) - $2,800
  • 2-bedroom apartment (sized 1105 ft2 / 103 m2) - $3100
  • 2-bedroom apartment (sized 1135-1390 ft2 / 105-129 m2) - $3300
  • Penthouse Suite (sized 2470-3240 ft2 / 229-301 m2) - $6,100

Keep in mind that the owners actually purchase a property with a finite lifetime (the projected lifespan for passenger ships is between 30-40 years) and eventually, this vessel will be dismantled ( scrapped ). This means that The World ship's apartments are in reality leased for 30-40 years.

MS The World itinerary

How is the cruise ship The World itinerary decided upon? The itinerary route is selected through a voting process by the Resident community and it is based on the personal interests of residents and the best sea routes. The World ship itinerary is usually determined two years in advance by the Captains, Resident Itinerary Committee, and the Director of Itinerary and Destination Planning.

MS The World cruise ship

Cruise ship The World sails to various destinations and all kinds of regions- and these are continuous and worldwide! The World cruise ship journeys focus on extended stays- of average three days in each port, thus ensuring that residents and guests have enough time to explore destinations. Unlike most cruise ships, ms The World spends twice as many days in call ports as at sea.

From the Canary Islands and Madeira, you will cross the Atlantic ocean and enjoy the Caribbean warmth, feel the excitement of passing through the Panama Canal! Then you can enjoy the way along the west coast of South America and island-hop across the Pacific to New Zealand. Papua, New Guinea and Solomon Islands are next on the expert-led expedition. The most exotic Asian spots are waiting for you to discover. The Sea of Okhotsk wildlife expedition is also rare. Another interesting experience while aboard The World cruise ship is visiting not only South Korea- you will be able to visit North Korea as well!

On August 18, 2012, MS The World started a Northwest Passage cruise from the USA to Greenland ( Nome Alaska to Nuuk Greenland ). The epic voyage ended on September 12, 2012. The ship was carrying a total of 481 passengers (residents) and crew. During the 26-day cruise, the ship traveled over 5500 ml (8900 km), following the route of Roald Amundsen (link to the Hurtigruten ship), who was the first sailor completing the voyage in 1906.

On January 28, 2017, the cruise ship broke the world's record for the most southerly navigation. The vessel reached Bay of Whales (Ross Sea, Antarctica) - coordinates 78°43.997'S and 163°41•421´W. The record was for cruising the furthest south any passenger ship has ever sailed. The record was achieved at 10:41 hrs (New Zealand time). During the Antarctica itinerary, the ship carried 145 passengers (residents and their guests) and 272 crew. The ship was commanded by its Captain Dag Saevik. The itinerary's length was over 5000 nm (5755 ml / 9260 km). Among the few passenger vessels that have made the voyage to this remote part of Antarctica is Akademik Shokalskiy (1982-built Russian ice-strengthened expedition ship). The Russian Federation-owned vessel was chartered by the Heritage Expeditions company. On February 2016, it reported reaching 78°43.971'S.

In April 2016, during the scheduled drydock refurbishment , the cruise ship was retrofitted with two new-generation systems manufactured by Wartsila Marine - Advanced Wastewater (treatment plant) and Nacos Platinum (navigation and external communication). Wartsila Hamworthy Membrane BioReactor (MBR) is a sewage treatment technology facilitating the grey’ and ‘black wastewater management. It also monitors discharges to the sea. The technology is based on biological degradation and membrane separation.

The ship's last drydock refurbishment was in 2019 at Navantia Shipyard ( Cadiz Spain ). The 35-day project (March-April) was supervised by Blue Water Shipping AS - 1972-founded, Denmark-based company specializing in road and marine transport and logistics. TDoS (Tillberg Design of Sweden) was supervising the redesign of several key shipboard areas, including East Restaurant (Pan-Asian), Fredy’s Deli (Barista, Cafe, Lounge, Marketplace, Buffet Counter), The World Boutique (shop), The World Showroom, The World Spa & Wellness Center (Spa, Beauty Salon, Gym, Pilates Studio).

The new navigation and automation system Nacos Platinum (hardware and software platform) is a combination of voyage planning, monitoring and track control. It reduces the workload for navigation officers and improves safety. The system also includes Dynamic Positioning and an ice radar. The World cruise ship is powered by Wartsila marine diesel engines (both main and auxiliary), respectively, two 12-cylinder and three 8-cylinder.

I spent 6 years living on The World, a cruise ship for millionaires. It was like the Four Seasons on steroids — readjusting to reality was tough.

  • Retired lawyer Peter Antonucci lived on The World, a luxurious residential ship, for six years.
  • It's extremely exclusive. The World's 165 condos cost between $2 million and $15 million each.
  • Antonucci told BI that it was as luxurious as it gets, making adjusting back to the real world hard.

Insider Today

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with retired lawyer Peter Antonucci, who spent six years living on The World — a residential ship for millionaires. Antonucci has written three novels about scandals on the high seas.

The following has been edited for length and clarity.

You can't really explain The World in a sound bite. There's not an elevator pitch. It's not something you can do in 30 words or less.

People often ask me to compare it to a cruise ship . It's not a cruise ship, it's so much more than that.

Firstly, there are no cabins; there are apartments. Like a condo anywhere else in the world, they come in all sizes.

Obviously, the ship can only sail on water. So when you go to Russia and dock in St. Petersburg, if you want a tour of the Kremlin, they'll get a plane to take you there.

You'd stay at a gorgeous hotel and have guards and guides take you around.

The concierges were the same as you would find in a five-star resort, except they got to know you as people.

The crew is what made The World so special — beyond professional, respectful, charming, charismatic, and fun. Their service is what made it the Four Seasons on steroids.

My preference was always to have a cold glass of water next to my bed. They would find out where I was eating at night and if I was going to one of the bars or something afterwards so that when I got back to my room, there was an icy glass of water waiting for me.

Some people liked a cup of coffee next to their bed. They would get to their apartment and that coffee was always steaming hot.

Onboard, people competed to throw big parties. The crew loved working with you to throw them.

They'd ask you for the theme; your wife's birthday, St Patrick's Day, Australia Day, or the Fourth of July.

When my first book was released while we were on the ship, they threw a launch party, and it blew me away.

The whole table was done nautically, with ropes on the walls as you would have on a ship. Even the salt and pepper shakers were little sailboats.

Related stories

I don't know where this stuff came from, it was like a costume room from a Broadway theater they had hidden away.

And the wine — the ship has one of the greatest wine lists you'll ever see.

You're not going to find many bottles under $100. Drinking an $800 bottle of wine at dinner was not unusual.

The crew was so special because they knew us; nobody can make you feel as comfortable as somebody who knows you.

You had a list of preferences: food, drink, and housekeeping.

Some people's preferences were maybe eight bullet points, others were literally 10 pages.

I had a few. For example, there's a certain iced tea that I like. I was introduced to it by the wonderful sommelier.

Then, I once saw a large beer stein when we were in Germany . I said, "What beautiful glass."

Little did I know a crew member would order a dozen of those steins, and they would follow me on the ship.

Anywhere I had a reservation, or anytime I sat down for lunch anywhere, that iced tea was in front of me in that big stein with three ice cubes in it.

When you sat at a table, you'd have all the things you expected to be there.

This made going to a regular restaurant on land, where you have to yell for somebody to give you a glass of water, funny to get used to again.

After spending six or seven months at a time on The World, I did sometimes struggle to adjust to the real world.

For example, on The World, you'd go to your meal, enjoy yourself, and get up to leave. It would get billed to your apartment and come in a folio at the end of the month.

I grew so accustomed to it that once I'd returned home, it wasn't uncommon for me to go to a restaurant, get up, and start walking out, only to say, "Oh my god, I didn't pay."

I imagine others had the same issue.

Having sold up in 2019, do I miss some of the luxury and pomp? Yes, it was glorious.

You get some of that in a luxury property but you're not going to get the same crew.

Life at Sea Three Year World Cruise Facing Investor Withdrawal

  • November 21, 2023

Lara

“Despite our efforts, the Life At Sea project faces challenges due to investor withdrawal,” said Vedat Ugurlu, CEO of Miray Cruises, in a statement.

The company, which was behind the Life at Sea three year world cruise , failed to get going on Nov. 1 and has yet to acquire a ship.

“While we’re in talks to acquire a similar vessel, if the December 1st sail is jeopardized, we offer alternative departure dates or expedited refunds,” Ugurlu said. “Although we could use our current vessel, the Gemini, we remain committed to delivering the promised larger, newer vessel.

“For refund requests, per contract terms, Miray covers non-refundable travel expenses. Hotel expenses in Istanbul until December 1st are covered, and subsequent travel expenses to your chosen destination will be reimbursed. Refunds will be processed via bank transfer. Your pods will be sent to your chosen destination.

“As we navigate these challenges, we are actively working on creating alternative plans for the future, ensuring an unforgettable experience for our valued community.”

Royal Caribbean takes ownership of the world's biggest cruise ship

By karla cripps, cnn | posted - nov. 28, 2023 at 5:33 p.m., the icon of the seas has been handed over to royal caribbean at turku in finland in this undated photo. (royal caribbean).

Estimated read time: 3-4 minutes

TURKU, Finland — The world's biggest cruise ship is now in the hands of its new owner, with Royal Caribbean accepting delivery of the 1,198-foot Icon of the Seas this week.

The 20-deck, 250,800-gross-ton ship was officially handed over to the cruise company at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, on Monday. Its inaugural voyage is set to depart from Miami, Florida, on Jan. 27, 2024, and will tour the Caribbean for seven days.

According to a news release issued by Royal Caribbean, it took 900 days to build Icon of the Seas, which has the capacity to hold a whopping 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew members. That's nearly 10,000 people — the population of a small town.

"Today, we are celebrating more than a new ship; it's also the celebration of the culmination of more than 50 years of innovation and dreaming at Royal Caribbean to create the ultimate vacation experience," said Royal Caribbean Group President and CEO Jason Liberty during a ceremony at the shipyard on Monday.

When it sets sail in late January, Icon of the Seas will have eight different neighborhoods for travelers to explore and some 40 bars and dining options.

Among these is Thrill Island, which will feature Category 6, the world's largest waterpark at sea. This neighborhood will also have a ropes course/thrill ride that lets guests swing 154 feet above the ocean, a FlowRider wave simulator and a mini golf course.

On the opposite end of the vacation spectrum is Chill Island, which will have four of Icon's seven pools and an adults-only zone.

Over in the AquaDome, guests will find a 55-foot-tall water curtain and the AquaTheater, which has a cast of robots, skateboarders, divers and more.

Yesterday, Royal Carribean Blog shared this image on FB. A quick comparison between the size of #Titanic (largest steamer in the world in 1912) & other ships in the fleet, including Icon Of The Seas (largest cruise ship in the world today, maiden voyage in January 2024). pic.twitter.com/4pTKaDlfbT — Meriadec Villers (@MeriaRmsTitanic) November 23, 2023

The Hideaway is where travelers will find the world's first suspended infinity pool at sea.

And that's barely scratching the surface.

In terms of sleeping options, guests can choose from 28 different styles of cabins and suites including the three-level Ultimate Family Townhouse.

Royal Caribbean says Icon of the Seas is the cruise line's first ship that can be powered by liquefied natural gas and will have the first waste-to-energy plant at sea.

It was originally scheduled for delivery in early 2022, but the COVID pandemic created delays.

Icon of the Seas is now on its way to Cadiz, Spain, for some final touches before it sets sail for its new home in Florida, according to the cruise line.

Viral photo creates a buzz

Much has been said about Icon of the Seas in the months leading up to its delivery, proving once again that cruises are a polarizing travel topic — particularly when mega-ships are involved.

A colorful, extremely detailed image of Icon's stern section went viral in July – and the reaction was far from positive.

It got billed as a "monstrosity," a "pile of decadence," and one user suggested a better name for it would be "Icon of Disease."

But some experts CNN spoke with said this was not out of the ordinary.

"Images of Royal Caribbean's ships have often elicited strong responses," cruise expert Stewart Chiron told CNN Travel when questioned about the reaction in August.

"The negative responses to Icon of the Sea are evidently from non-cruisers. The current image is quite colorful and depicts a ship with lots of options. The positive responses far outweigh the others."

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson, when contacted by CNN several months ago, did not comment on the feedback to this specific image, but said since the Icon of the Seas was revealed in October 2022 there has been an "incredible reaction," which has led to the highest volume booking week in the company's history when sales opened.

The current "world's largest cruise ship" title holder is another vessel in the Royal Caribbean fleet, Wonder of the Seas, which made its inaugural voyage in 2022. Slightly smaller than Icon of the Seas, it stretches 1,188 feet in length and has 18 decks to explore.

Cruise operator Viking targets $11 billion valuation as IPO market stays hot

Viking is set to trade on the New York Stock Exchange as VIK.

Viking Holdings, the European cruise line operator, is seeking to raise more than $1 billion in a public offering next week that could become the second-biggest IPO of 2024.

Viking is scheduled to price on April 30 and trade the next day, a person familiar with the deal told Fortune . The Pembroke, Bermuda–based company plans to sell 44 million shares at $21 to $25 each, according to a regulatory filing dated April 22. Viking will be offering 11 million shares with the remainder coming from shareholders, according to a statement . BofA Securities and JPMorgan are lead underwriters on the deal, which could end up valuing Viking—slated to trade under VIK on the New York Stock Exchange—at almost $11 billion.

Torstein Hagen, Viking’s chairman and CEO, founded the company in 1997. It has a fleet of 92 vessels that travel to all seven continents, including special expeditions to Antarctica and to the Arctic North.

“Looking toward the future, we believe there are a number of opportunities for growing Viking,” Hagen wrote in a letter accompanying the filing. “We have 24 new ships on order, with options for 12 more. We have also started to enter new markets, such as China and elsewhere in Asia, where we see significant growth potential over the long term.”

Revenue for Viking rose 48% to $4.7 billion in 2023. The company was profitable in 2022 but posted $1.86 billion in losses last year, and it’s highly leveraged, reporting $5.4 billion in total debt as of Dec. 31.

“We have substantial indebtedness and we may not be able to generate sufficient cash to service all of our indebtedness or to obtain additional financing if necessary,” Viking said in the regulatory filing.

The company is also backed by private equity. Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and TPG likely will each have nearly 5% of the firm’s voting power after the IPO.

The IPO market is bouncing back. Last week, Ibotta rose 17% during its first day of trading after pricing at $88. Rubrik, a Microsoft-backed cloud data security provider, is scheduled to list shares on Thursday and could raise as much as $713 million . Also on Thursday, Marex Group, a U.K.-based financial services platform, is expected to trade, according to IPOScoop.com.

The year’s biggest IPO still belongs to Amer Sport, the maker of Wilson tennis racquets, which raised $1.37 billion in February, according to data from Dealogic. Viking, if it prices at the top of its range, could raise as much as $1.1 billion.

Worry about foreign ownership of telecom companies has a long history in the U.S.

The foreign aid bill that President Joe Biden signed today includes a provision that could force the owner of TikTok to sell the video app – or see it banned in the U.S.

TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance now has several months to complete a sale.

In a statement, TikTok has called the measure unconstitutional and said the company will challenge the matter in court.

It’s not every day that Congress takes aim at a specific foreign-owned company over national security worries. But limiting foreign ownership of firms in the U.S., especially in telecommunications, is a practice with a long history.

By long history, we mean like all the way back to the founding of the United States, says Zephyr Teachout, a professor at Fordham Law School.

“The focus and anxiety about foreign corruption and foreign powers was really central at the Constitutional Convention,” said Teachout.

The founders, she says, were really concerned that foreign countries would try to meddle in the U.S., so they passed measures including the Emoluments Clause which prohibits office holders from taking gifts from foreign officials.

Over the decades, the government restricted foreign businesses from taking part in energy, shipping and telecommunications.

“In 1912, the Radio Act was passed, which prohibited foreign ownership of radio stations, and that really became a model for other communications infrastructure,” said Teachout.

The idea, Teachout says, was to prevent foreign actors from using mass communication to do two things:

“Spying on the one hand and propaganda on the other,” explained Teachout.

Those are the same concerns lawmakers now have about ByteDance, the Beijing-based owner of TikTok, says Ganesh Sitaraman at Vanderbilt Law School.

“It really matters who owns the basic communications infrastructures of our country, and tech platforms are one of the central ones in the modern era,” said Sitaraman.

But what’s unusual in this case is its Congress spelling out who can own a specific company. Usually, that’s left to a government body called the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, says James Lewis at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“CFIUS can block a sale. But they can also say, ‘OK, we’ll let you operate this American company, but you need to do the following things,'” said Lewis.

CFIUS had been looking into TikTok, but Congress’ action overrides that work.

Now, with the U.S. giving the company a matter of months to sell off the algorithm at the heart of the app, the Chinese government is pushing back.

“We’ve set ourselves up for a head on collision. It’s a bit like a game of chicken. And the real test here is the algorithm. Who gets the algorithm?” said Lewis.

And that fight, Lewis says, does not have a historical precedent.

North Korea says it tested ‘super-large’ cruise missile warhead and new anti-aircraft missile

Image: TOPSHOT-NKOREA-MILITARY

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea said Saturday it tested a “super-large” cruise missile warhead and a new anti-aircraft missile in a western coastal area as it expands military capabilities in the face of deepening tensions with the United States and South Korea.

North Korean state media said the country’s missile administration on Friday conducted a “power test” for the warhead designed for the Hwasal-1 Ra-3 strategic cruise missile and a test-launch of the Pyoljji-1-2 anti-aircraft missile. It said the tests attained an unspecified “certain goal.”

Photos released by the North’s official Korean Central News Agency showed at least two missiles being fired off launcher trucks at a runway.

North Korea conducted a similar set of tests Feb. 2, but at the time did not specify the names of the cruise missile or the anti-aircraft missile, indicating it was possibly seeing technological progress after testing the same system over weeks.

KCNA insisted Friday’s tests were part of the North’s regular military development activities and had nothing to do with the “surrounding situation.”

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are at their highest in years, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un dialing up his weapons demonstrations, which have included more powerful missiles aimed at the U.S. mainland and U.S. targets in the Pacific. The United States, South Korea and Japan have responded by expanding their combined military training and sharpening their deterrence strategies built around strategic U.S. assets.

Cruise missiles are among a  growing collection of North Korean weapons  designed to overwhelm regional missile defenses. They supplement the North’s vast lineup of ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles aimed at the continental United States.

Analysts say anti-aircraft missile technology is an area where North Korea could benefit from its  deepening military cooperation with Russia , as the two countries align in the face of their separate, intensifying confrontations with the U.S. The United States and South Korea have accused North Korea of providing artillery shells and other equipment to Russia to help extend its warfighting in Ukraine.

Royal Caribbean takes ownership of world's largest cruise ship

November 28, 2023 / 8:29 AM EST / CNN

(CNN) - The world's biggest cruise ship is now in the hands of its new owner, with Royal Caribbean accepting delivery of the 1,198-foot Icon of the Seas  this week.

The 20-deck, 250,800-tonne ship was officially handed over to the cruise company at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, on November 27. Its inaugural voyage is set to depart from Miami on January 27, 2024 and will tour the Caribbean for seven days.

According to a news release issued by Royal Caribbean , it took 900 days to build Icon of the Seas, which has the capacity to hold a whopping 7,600 guests and 2,350 crew members. That's nearly 10,000 people - the population of a small town.

When it sets sail in late January, Icon of the Seas will have eight different neighborhoods for travelers to explore, and some 40 bars and dining options.

According to the cruise line, Icon of the Seas is now on its way to Cadiz, Spain for some final touches before it sets sail for its new home in Florida.

Viral photo creates a buzz

Much has been said about Icon of the Seas in the months leading up to its delivery, proving once again that cruises are a polarizing travel topic - particularly when mega ships are involved.

A colorful, extremely detailed image of Icon's stern section went viral in July - and the reaction was far from positive.

It got billed as a "monstrosity," a "pile of decadence," and one user suggested a better name for it would be "Icon of Disease."

But some experts said this was not out of the ordinary.

"Images of Royal Caribbean's ships have often elicited strong responses," said cruise expert Stewart Chiron when questioned about the reaction in August.

"The negative responses to Icon of the Sea are evidently from non-cruisers. The current image is quite colorful and depicts a ship with lots of options. The positive responses far outweigh the others."

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson, when contacted by CNN several months ago, did not comment on the feedback to this specific image, but said that since the Icon of the Seas was revealed in October 2022 there has been an "incredible reaction," which has led to the highest volume booking week in the company's history when sales opened.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves ownership dispute is moving into mediation.

The first session toward determining whether Glen Taylor will remain controlling owner or cede to Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez has been scheduled for May 1, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the details were not being publicized. ESPN first reported the news.

The 82-year-old Taylor announced March 28 that he was exercising his right to pull out of the last part of the unusually structured deal because Lore and Rodriguez did not meet the deadline for the final payment — about $600 million — that was to transfer an additional 40% stake of the club.

Lore and Rodriguez vehemently disagreed. The pair said they were waiting on NBA approval for the paperwork they’d submitted by the March 27 deadline that entitled them, per the contract, to a 90-day extension. They accused Taylor of simply having seller’s remorse because the value of the Timberwolves has increased since the agreement, mirroring a continued spike in NBA revenues.

Taylor acknowledged his change of heart last month but said that was because of the good vibes around the organization during a 56-26 season that went down as the second-best in franchise history.

“We’ve got a really good team, we’ve got a lot of good things going for us, I enjoy it and I’m healthy enough to do this,” Taylor said in an interview with the AP after his announcement. “I don’t need the money, so I think I’ll just keep running it and enjoy it. I like my coach. I like my staff. This way everybody gets to keep their jobs, and I’ll be happy.”

Commissioner Adam Silver said earlier this month that the league likely would not have a reason to intervene in the dispute.

Lore, an e-commerce entrepreneur, and Rodriguez, the former Major League Baseball star, struck an agreement with Taylor in 2021 to buy the Timberwolves and the Minnesota Lynx WNBA franchise for $1.5 billion. Taylor, who bought the team in 1994 for $88 million, set up the deal in phases so he could serve as a mentor of sorts to the newcomers as they learned the league, the organization and the Twin Cities community. Lore and Rodriguez together own 36% of the club.

Silver said the dispute might prompt the NBA to change its rules around such transactions so as to avoid future conflicts.

Taylor, Lore and Rodriguez were seen speaking cordially Saturday in a side hallway at Target Center after Minnesota beat Phoenix in Game 1 of the first-round playoff series.

Taylor sat next to his wife in their usual seats Tuesday next to the Timberwolves bench for Game 2. Lore and Rodriguez were seated with their guests directly across the court.
