Also called the “Green Industrial City,” this small and ancient harbor town in West Zealand is said to be the world’s best blueprint of industrial symbiosis – where all businesses in the area collaborate and work actively towards successfully managing and sustaining the environment and all natural resources. The city government and the corporations have come to work together in using locally-available materials and using them for economically viable and sustainable projects. It is home to Transmitter Kalundborg, a major broadcasting facility and Asnaes, the biggest coal-fired electricity plant in the country.

But beyond that, this thriving seaport municipality can also be considered a gateway to some of Denmark’s most amazing landscapes, rugged and rustic terrains and breathtaking beaches and coastlines. As part of West Zealand’s “undiscovered” areas, Kalundborg is near idyllic towns such as Reerso, Rosnaes, Sejero and Roskilde to name a few. There are also ferries connecting the city to Samso and Aarhus. Kalundborg has some interesting attractions worth visiting. Its most prominent landmark is the Church of Our Lady, a five-towered church built on the castle mound in Adelgade during the 12th century.

The church was designed in the form of a Greek cross with an octagonal tower on each of the four arms of the cross and on the center stands a square tower. The four towers were named after female saints – St. Gertrude, St. Catherine, St. Anne and St. Magdalene. Aside from the church there is also the famous Baroque-style Lerchenborg Palace located in the outskirts of Kalundborg.

Said to be the best example of rococo architecture in the country, the estate is now used for several purposes. In the summer the Knights’ Hall is a popular venue for concerts.

The garden of Kalundborg Museum

The culture-botanical garden features 37 different species of ancient medicinal plants, spices, ornamental, kitchen, and poisonous plants, and plants used as dyes. All the species were originally introduced to Denmark in or before the Middle Ages and still grow in the wild in or around Kalundborg’s medieval city centre.

The six display beds are the first in Denmark to contain only "friar's plants" found in the vicinity.

The two-hundred-year-old mulberry tree is also quite an attraction.

A famous ceramic model of the fortress and market town of Kalundborg as it was in ca. 1650 is also to be found in the garden. The model was made in 1951 by pastor Steen Andersen. He also built the model of medieval Copenhagen to be seen in the city's museum.

You can enjoy your packed lunch at one of the museum's tables with a superb view of the church and the fjord.

Mange interessante oplevelser i Kalundborg

visit kalundborg denmark

Her har man mulighed for at udforske utallige vandrestier i mange forskellige terræner.

Kalundborg Museum has a special focus on the Middle Ages in Kalundborg. The museum itself is located in Lindegården, which is an attraction in itself - the former noble farm is one of Denmark's best-preserved apartment buildings from the Renaissance and more recent times. Lindegården is built on the remains of King Valdemar Atterdag's city wall from the Middle Ages.

Kalundborg is one of Europe's very few cities with two castles from the Middle Ages: Vestborgen and Østborgen / Kalundborg Castle. The castle housed the national archives from approx. 1380 to 1582. At that time the city was Denmark's administrative capital.

The museum is a good starting point for a walk in Højbyen - the country's best-preserved urban environment from the Middle Ages of 90 hectares, which includes both Vestborgen and Vor Frue Kirke, which with its five towers is Scandinavia's most unique contribution to European church architecture.

You can experience that

At Kalundborg Museum you can see what Kalundborg looked like in the Middle Ages in the model city, get an impression of Højbyen and walk around Denmark's only cultural botanical garden with medicinal herbs that have been collected exclusively in the city and have survived here since the Middle Ages.  In the garden is Denmark's second oldest mulberry tree from approx. 1750 and looks like a giant bonsai. See exhibitions about crusades, the bomber Mad Money II and the Crusader wallpaper - woven by local weavers. In the ancient exhibition, we show objects from the Stone Age and the Viking manor seat at Tissø. The museum also houses changing special exhibitions about Kalundborg throughout history.  We have a well-stocked one  museum shop with delicious crafts, gift items and handicrafts. Here we also sell drinks. Parking is free, and you are welcome to eat brought food at the tables in the museum garden or in the courtyard.

Colour, castles and eco communities: your travel guide to Denmark’s vibrant cities, towns and islands

Danish travel is quite literally a breath of fresh air, whether you’re after walkable cities or island living

You may think you know Denmark, but the regions of this Scandinavian archipelago have their distinct attractions – from award-winning gastronomy and sustainability programmes to Viking world heritage sites and wilderness sanctuaries. What’s more, from small towns to major islands, everything’s connected via cycle-friendly train, bridge or ferry routes, making it easy to hop around.

Lively cities with small-town charm

These places may be home to Denmark’s largest communities, but the chilled vibes and outdoor lifestyle make for slow, relaxing city breaks

Aarhus had a big moment in the sun when it was named European capital of culture in 2017 – and it hasn’t stopped shining since. On the east coast of Jutland, the city’s circular “Your rainbow panorama” walkway above the ARoS art museum creates a dramatic impact on the skyline, while the singularly innovative urban architecture at the Aarhus Ø (redeveloped docklands) is silver and sleek. The Moesgaard Museum has a range of exhibitions charting human evolution within its impressive partly subterranean concrete design – including one of the world’s best preserved Iron Age bog bodies, Grauballe Man. The Infinite Bridge , a circular wooden structure originally conceived as a temporary art installation, is now reconstructed each spring in Aarhus Bay, allowing walkers to go on seaside promenades. Share in the Danish love of the big outdoors at Mols Bjerge National Park at Djursland, and hire your own guide to kayak or hike within the 18,000-hectare (44,480-acre) reserve.

Viking ships once sailed along the Limfjord in northern Jutland, but the city of Aalborg , with its vibrant old centre, now sits at the vanguard of design. The home town of Jørn Utzon, architect of the iconic Sydney Opera House, Aalborg’s waterfront Utzon Centre celebrates global architecture through exhibitions and education. Its neighbour, the impressively slick Musikkens Hus , has cutting-edge technology in gorgeously designed auditoriums for the best listening experience. After taking your fill of creativity, you might be in need of something more substantial – head to the international street food market at Køkkenfabrikken , or to the Aalborg Tower , which serves up edifying 360-degree views alongside Danish cuisine.

Copenhagen might be the Danish capital, but it’s a highly walkable (not to mention cycleable) city filled with harbour swimming zones and relaxed waterfront cafes – and, of course, many of the world’s very best restaurants . Wander at will through foodie hotspots in what are known collectively as the “bros”: Nørrebro, Østerbro and Vesterbro, go shopping along the pedestrianised Strøget, then make a beeline for Nyhavn, the picturesque, historic centre of Copenhagen, with its harmoniously coloured 16th and 17th century townhouses and permanently moored tall ships. Take a canal tour from here to the iconic Little Mermaid statue – but be warned, she really is very little, and best viewed up close, on foot!

Other highlights of Copenhagen include the Tivoli Gardens amusement park , the 17th-century Round Tower (Europe’s oldest working observatory), as well as Amalienborg , home to the Danish royal family. Make sure you time your visit for the daily changing of the guard, and listen to the sound of boots reverberating over the ancient courtyard cobblestones. Amalienborg’s so laid-back, you can stroll right up to photograph the beautiful rococo four-palace complex. Cross the water to explore the western side of the Copenhagen harbourfront and enjoy a range of street food stands at Reffen and The Bridge Street Kitchen . While you are on this side, take greater care at Freetown Christiania, where you need to heed the written advice on entry regarding safety – but it’s a very liberal, alternative-living enclave that’s worth taking a guided wander through.

On the island of Funen, the cultural city of Odense has produced two of Denmark’s most famous artists – the composer Carl Nielsen and Hans Christian Andersen . A whole multimedia experience opened in 2021, inviting visitors to fully immerse in the world and characters of Andersen’s fairy tales, while Nielsen’s life is celebrated in a museum and a new sound-enhanced walking trail , which is presented only in Danish but still absolutely worth it for the music. The Funen Village , where 18th- and 19th-century Danish history is brought to life – something the Danes do so well – is not to be missed. Or visit Odense in the summer for the Tinderbox music and international film festivals.

Small towns and islands with big ideas

With so many islands and small towns dotted over the Danish archipelago, there’s something on offer for every kind of visitor

Sustainable and naturally wonderful locations Samsø , in the Kattegat Sea between Jutland and Zealand, is the sunny isle that’s at the heart of eco living. Cycle around the island that was the first to generate 100% of its electricity from reneweable sources, thanks to people-power , and journey there on a new electric ferry (in operation from January 2025). Known for its horticulture too, try the typically Danish open sandwich, kartoffelmad – showcasing the island’s fabulous new potatoes, and one of the few vegetarian smørrebrød . Ærø , the idyllic, small island south of Funen, also boasts world-leading green technology, spearheaded by its community-driven initiatives.

For a taste of authentic laid-back Danish island life, though, Bornholm , in the Baltic Sea, is just perfect. A haven for summerhouse living and wild winter swimming , the fishing villages here have traditional herring smokehouses, not to mention Kadeau , perhaps the world’s only Michelin-starred restaurant in a converted beach shack – find it near the fine white sands and grassy dunes of Dueodde beach.

Windswept and beautifully wild, Skagen is Denmark’s northernmost town, poking out at the top of North Jutland, where the North Sea and Baltic waters meet. With its natural setting and oh-so-perfect light, you will be just as inspired as the French realism-influenced Skagen painters who, in the late 19th century, depicted the beauty of the seascapes here. Cosy up with a bit of hygge in the town’s quaint museums and cafes, after a walk over the dunes.

Family-friendly, educational and Unesco heritage locations It’s fair to say that the entire country of Denmark is family-friendly, but for a bit of extra fun, head to Billund ’s Legoland , the original resort built from coloured bricks. Billund is actually the town where Lego was invented by local carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen. Initially fashioning the toys from wooden blocks in the early 1930s, he moved on decades later to injection-moulded plastic. And the rest is history.

Just 45 minutes north of Copenhagen, the beautiful town of Helsingør, or Elsinore , is known to be William Shakespeare’s inspiration for Hamlet. At Kronborg Castle , where the Bard’s work is performed in scenes around the castle and grounds, you can mingle with the actors. With glorious sea views too, the old-world charm of the small town’s timber-framed houses and narrow streets make it a wonderful place to while away a lazy afternoon.

Denmark’s oldest town, Ribe , is one of the best places to experience Viking history. Stretching back to approximately AD710, the street plaques and local guides tell the story of this fascinating pre-Christian settlement. The tower at Ribe Cathedral looks out over the Unesco heritage Wadden Sea National Park and the island of Mandø , a newly certified Dark Sky Park, where seal and bird life abound.

Roskilde on the main island of Zealand is only a short drive from metropolitan Copenhagen, yet it’s full of Viking heritage. Visit the Viking Ship Museum and the medieval, Unesco-listed gothic cathedral , the resting place of 40 Danish kings and queens, including the infamous 10th-century Viking king Harald Bluetooth, who united Denmark and Norway.

At Jelling , the Viking rune stones are part of Denmark’s long history and are Unesco world heritage listed, alongside the newest entry – the country’s five Viking ring fortresses. Spanning the country from Aggersborg near Løgstør to Trelleborg close to Copenhagen, it’s possible to drop in on at least one of them, whichever part of Denmark you choose to visit next.

How Ozempic Is Transforming a Small Danish Town

In Kalundborg, population under 17,000, Novo Nordisk is making huge investments to increase production of its popular diabetes and weight-loss drugs, Ozempic and Wegovy.

Reporting from Kalundborg and Copenhagen, Denmark

  • April 20, 2024

As the sun sets over the harbor in Kalundborg, a small town about 60 miles west of Copenhagen, light streams through the glass walls of Shaun Gamble’s cafe and bathes his afternoon customers in a warm glow. It’s an enviable location — on the water, next to a large playground — except for the fact that little else is nearby.

That is expected to change soon as the town benefits from America’s scramble for weight-loss drugs.

Nearby, at a sprawling manufacturing plant, Novo Nordisk makes nearly all of its semaglutide, the active ingredient in the company’s wildly popular diabetes and obesity treatments Ozempic and Wegovy. The company has been in Kalundborg for half a century but in the past two years announced it would invest 60 billion kroner, or about $8.6 billion, into expanding the facilities here. It’s the largest manufacturing investment in Denmark by a company, and it’s happening in this town of fewer than 17,000 people.

The money is part of Novo Nordisk’s global transformation to ramp up production of its best-selling drugs, but perhaps nowhere will feel the impact like this coastal community. Novo Nordisk plans to add 1,250 jobs to the existing 4,500 employees at the Kalundborg plant. A highway is being extended; investors are snapping up houses and planning new construction; universities have begun offering biotech courses to feed Novo Nordisk and nearby businesses with workers.

Shaun Gamble, wearing a black T-shirt, talking to two customers as he stands behind the counter in a coffee shop, with blackboards listing menu items hung on the wall behind him.

Mr. Gamble, who opened his Costa Kalundborg Kaffe four years ago after a job at a nearby Novo Nordisk warehouse, is optimistic. The cafe’s business is unsteady — busy in the summer when tourists flock to nearby cottages, yet money-losing for much of the rest of the year when it’s rainy and windy.

But the municipality, bolstered by Novo Nordisk’s boom, plans to open a library and cultural hub next door. Mr. Gamble is investing, too, planning to open earlier and serve more food, including breakfast.

“In five years it’ll be a totally different town,” he said. “That’s what I’m betting on.”

Creating economic winners

Novo Nordisk is already reshaping Denmark’s economy. The country’s economy grew 1.9 percent last year, among the fastest in Europe and all thanks to the pharmaceutical industry, led by Novo Nordisk. Without it, the economy would have stagnated.

Nearly all of Novo Nordisk’s revenue is earned overseas, more than half in the United States alone.

There are other, more tangible benefits for Danes. The company is the largest corporate taxpayer in Denmark. Last year it paid about 15 percent of the country’s entire corporate tax intake, more than other big Danish companies like the brewer Carlsberg, the toy company Lego and the shipping firm Maersk.

Some analysts wonder if this blessing could become a curse, recalling Finland’s long recession when Nokia lost its dominance in mobile phones with the arrival of the iPhone and Android smartphones.

Stephanie Lose, the economy minister, isn’t too concerned that Denmark will suffer a similar fate. “The pharmaceutical sector is not as interwoven with the Danish economy,” she said. Novo Nordisk’s employees represent just 1 percent of the Danish work force — though it did account for 20 percent of the jobs added last year.

Some of the corporate taxes that Novo Nordisk pays return to the communities where the company operates. Gladsaxe, the municipality on the edge of Copenhagen that includes Bagsvaerd, the home of Novo Nordisk’s headquarters, is investing in day care centers and new sports facilities, and is building a light rail transit system with other regions outside the capital.

“Our economic leeway is generally larger thanks to Novo and the many other companies we have,” said Trine Graese, the Gladsaxe’s mayor.

Rush-hour traffic and biotech classes

Kalundborg knows the benefits and risks of pinning the town’s fortunes to one company. A shipyard briefly dominated the town’s economy early last century, but was decimated during the Great Depression. In the 1960s, Kalundborg thrived as the manufacturing site for Carmen Curlers, which pioneered electric hot hair curlers, causing a sensation in the United States. Then the company was sold to the American firm Clairol, fashions changed, thousands were laid off and the plant eventually closed in 1990.

“The third time is the lucky one,” said Martin Damm, the mayor of Kalundborg municipality, which has branded itself “Biotech City.”

Educational opportunities are already undergoing a transformative change. For years, high school graduates left town to continue their education, and Novo Nordisk struggled to retain scientists and other employees with advanced training.

Now, three universities offer courses in biotechnology and related subjects in town, with more institutions arriving soon. The Novo Nordisk Foundation also finances the Helix Lab, where graduate students complete their master’s thesis working with local companies, including Novo Nordisk.

The company’s investment is expected to draw more people to the area. Recently, Kalundborg has been able to sell plots of land it had previously been struggling to shift to private developers. And there is talk of opening an international school to teach children in English to accommodate the drugmaker’s increasingly international work force.

For now, first-time home buyers must compete against investors in Copenhagen or other locals looking to rent space to temporary construction workers, said Jesper Olsen, a local estate agent.

Still, the changes have had a limited impact for some.

“It’s great to have new people to talk to,” said Malte Glad, 19, as he got his hair cut. But, for people his age, Kalundborg is “still a little bit slow,” he said. On the weekend, he often heads to other cities for entertainment.

Justyna Anna Kowalczyk, a 22-year-old student from Poland, studies engineering at University College Absalon. She works part time across the street at Novo Nordisk, and hopes to make it a full-time job after graduation.

“I like little cities,” she said, because she’s from one. But it’s the connection between the university and Novo Nordisk that matters: “That’s what brought me here.”

A Close Look at Weight-Loss Drugs

Senate Investigation: A Senate committee is investigating the prices that Novo Nordisk charges  for Ozempic and Wegovy, which are highly effective at treating diabetes and obesity but carry steep price tags.

A Company Remakes Itself: Novo Nordisk’s factories work nonstop turning out Ozempic and Wegovy , but the Danish company has far bigger ambitions.

Transforming a Small Danish Town: In Kalundborg, population under 17,000, Novo Nordisk is making huge investments to increase production  of Ozempic and Wegovy.

Ozempic’s Inescapable Jingle: The diabetes drug has become a phenomenon, and “Oh, oh, oh, Ozempic!” — a takeoff of the Pilot song “Magic”  — has played a big part in its story.

The Era of ‘Brozempic’: Some telehealth start-ups are playing up masculine stereotypes to market GLP-1s  — the revolutionary class of drugs like Ozempic — which have been more widely associated with women.

Taking on Weight Stigma: Oprah Winfrey, a prominent figure in the conversation about dieting and weight bias, tackled the rise of weight loss drugs in a new prime-time special . In December, she shared that she was taking a medication to manage her weight.

Photo By Alain M. Polynice | Equipment in support of DEFENDER 24 is offloaded from the motor vessel GREEN OCEAN at the port of Kalundborg, Denmark, April 19, 2024. This is the first time the U.S. Army has utilized this seaport for port operations, marking a new logistical pathway that enhances U.S. strategic flexibility and reach to the “High North” in order to defend its NATO allies. Military exercises involving NATO allies and partner nations in the European theater remain an integral part of demonstrating our capability, our readiness, and interoperability.   see less | View Image Page

Story by Alain M. Polynice

598th transportation brigade.

visit kalundborg denmark

KALUNDBORG, Denmark – The 598th Transportation Brigade of the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command became part of several historical firsts during port operations conducted at the port of Kalundborg, Denmark, April 2024. The use of port of Kalundborg is the first time the U.S. Army has utilized this seaport for port operations, marking a new logistical pathway that enhances U.S. strategic flexibility and reach. The 598th Transportation Brigade, along with the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, is now able to deliver its military soldiers and equipment to the “High North” in order to defend its NATO allies. This port operation was led by host nation Denmark. This also marked the first time Danish forces conducted a comprehensive port operation for the U.S. Army that encompassed a wide range of logistical activities, such as port contracting, stevedoring, staging space, and Logistical Support Area (LSA) operations. During this port operation, Capt. Renika Pruitt, 838th Transportation Battalion operations officer, served as an integrator – an adviser to the Danish forces, ensuring proper tactics, techniques, and procedures were being used, and aiding in the discharge of equipment from the vessel. “Conducting port operations here at Kalundborg, for the very first time, demonstrates the country of Denmark is not only ready, but willing to welcome U.S. military forces, and do whatever it can to make transit operations run as smooth as possible,” Pruitt said. “Working together and in partnership with our Danish counterpart enhances interoperability, and it enhances U.S. and NATO military mobility and capabilities.” Equipment from the motor vessel GREEN OCEAN were staged and prep for disposition in support of Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness, also known as DEFENDER 24. DEFENDER 24 is the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe and includes more than 17,000 U.S. and 23,000 multinational service members from more than 20 Allied and partner nations, to include Denmark, Norway, and Finland. DEFENDER 24 marks the fifth year this exercise has been conducted. This year's DEFENDER 24 marks a year of firsts for port operations during the exercise. Over 920 pieces of military equipment arrived at the port of Kalundborg and were offloaded from the GREEN OCEAN vessel. This marked the maiden voyage of the GREEN OCEAN vessel as it completed its first ever port operation after arriving from Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to Danish forces conducting a comprehensive port operation for the U.S. Army, vessels going to never-before used seaports by the U.S. Army, and conducting port operations at those seaports makes this particular DEFENDER 24 very historic. The port of Kalundborg, Denmark was the first. The other two seaports will be Narvik, Norway and Kemi, Finland. This would also be the first time any U.S. military vessel is allowed to use a Finnish port on the Gulf of Bothnia. Ultimately, the use of the port of Kalundborg became an inaugural deployment through a Danish corridor to Central Europe and Scandinavia, underscoring the deepening military cooperation between the United States and Denmark.

Youngkin will visit Europe for his third international trade mission as Virginia governor

RICHMOND, Va. — Glenn Youngkin will visit Germany, Denmark, Finland and Switzerland next week for his third international trade mission as Virginia governor.

Youngkin, a Republican, will meet with Finland's president , government officials, strategic business associations, company executives and global industry leaders “to further strengthen Virginia’s economic and cultural connections,” his press office said Wednesday as it announced his itinerary.

“This economic development trade mission with strong European partners will build on business relations, our shared priorities and highlight the Commonwealth’s capabilities. Virginia’s strong workforce, incredible business environment, robust transportation system and world-class education institutions make the Commonwealth uniquely positioned to attract businesses around the globe,” Youngkin said in a statement.

The governor and others in the Virginia delegation will depart Sunday and travel through May 3.

Virginia prides itself on a business-friendly reputation , and governors of both parties have routinely made international trade missions. Youngkin is a former private equity executive who, like other governors, has made business recruitment a vocal priority.

Last year, Youngkin traveled to France to visit the gravesites of Virginia service members killed during World War II’s D-Day invasion and attend an international air show, which he touted as a chance to boost the state’s aerospace industry .

In April 2023, he led a trade mission to Asia that included a politically sensitive meeting with the president of Taiwan.
