Best travel-sized hand sanitizers aligning with CDC guidance

Mother giving her son hand sanitizer while on a bus

After experiencing the “ worst year in history for air travel demand ” according to the International Air Transport Association, the country is opening up and many people are beginning to make travel plans again — 80 percent of U.S. consumers plan to travel for leisure in 2021, according to a Tripadvisor survey . And while vaccines are being rolled out and some states, including Texas, Iowa and Mississippi have dropped their mask mandates , medical experts are still recommending people take proper safety precautions such as double masking , socially distancing and washing hands frequently. Another safety measure is regularly applying hand sanitizer while on the go. So whether you’re planning on enjoying a staycation, going on a road trip or taking a socially-distant vacation overseas with family or friends, you may want to keep a few travel-sized hand sanitizers on hand.

This article will help you plan what toiletries you should bring on your trip by giving you a step-by-step walk through of a suggested planning process.

What is a toiletry item?

When I started traveling, someone took me by surprise when they asked me, “What are toiletries?” Before we get started, I want to quickly clarify what they are.

The toiletries definition from Cambridge Dictionary is: “articles used in washing and taking care of one’s body, such as soap, shampoo, and toothpaste”.

To be as helpful and efficient as possible, we’re including a variety of items in our toiletries list including grooming items, beauty products, and other essentials.

The secret to traveling light is to create a functional but minimalist capsule wardrobe. Learn more in my guide !

What toiletries can I take on a plane?

One of the most important things to know before you start planning for your trip is what you are allowed to bring in your suitcase. The toiletries you can take on a plane depend on whether or not you are checking your luggage.

walmart travel hygiene

Image Source: US Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

For cabin or carryon toiletries: airlines require that liquid products be no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and all bottles must fit in a clear quart size ziplock bag when traveling with a carry on. Products that need to be inside the quart size ziplock bag are liquids, aerosols, gels, creams, and pastes. This is called the 3-1-1 Liquids Rule .

Clear Travel Toiletry Bag

For checked toiletries:  items that are in containers larger than 3.4 ounces or 100 milliliters (regardless of amount ) should be in checked baggage. Visit this TSA page to find out exactly what items are allowed in a checked bag. It’s actually an interesting read!

These guidelines are for US-based airlines. However, these tend to be the general guidelines across all airlines. For specific items, always check the website of the airline or contact them and ask them directly.

The two toiletry bags our readers love the most are the eBags Pack it Flat Toiletry Kit and the  Sea to Summit Hanging Toiletry Bag.

For more suggestions, read our article rounding up the ten best toiletry bags  and the best hanging toiletry bags .

Tip: Make sure that you keep the quart-size ziplock bag (storing your carryon toiletries) accessible when you get to the airport. Once you get through security, place them back into your toiletry bag.

How do you keep your liquids from leaking?

Here’s a tip I shared on Oprah to help you prevent liquids from leaking in luggage: remove the cap from the bottle, place a small square of plastic wrap over the opening, and replace the cap.

The reason your bottles leak or explode on a flight is due to changes in air pressure. As the plane goes up, the pressure causes the bottle to compress (as if you were squeezing it with your hand). The plastic wrap acts as a seal to prevent leaks.

the-ultimate-guide-to-travel-toiletries

YAMYONE Leakproof Travel Bottles

This is the reason why store bought travel size toiletries are never completely full. You need to allow a little bit of extra space so the liquids don’t get pushed out by the changes in pressure. (This is also the reason why your ears get plugged while flying.)

The solution: Don’t fill your bottles all the way to the top. Instead, only fill them by 2/3 or 75%.

How to Pack Toiletries for Travel

Follow the below step-by-step guide on how to pack toiletries to determine what you will and will not need to bring along with how to downsize items.

Step 1: Planning and Preparation

Step 2: eliminate, step 3: downsize, step 4: travel containers.

the-ultimate-guide-to-travel-toiletries

Start by laying out all the grooming and beauty products you use on a day to day basis. Which of these can you take on your trip and which will you need to leave behind? Choose anything and everything you think you may need.

Then, place each item into one of these categories:

  • Not required
  • Not applicable

There are certain things you might find non-negotiable such as your favorite brand shampoo or premium face moisturizer. You can save a lot of space and weight in your luggage by minimizing toiletries and eliminating certain items altogether.

Round Clear Jars

Would you be willing to use the shampoo and body moisturizer provided by your hotel for a few days? A few weeks? If not, don’t worry. There are tips in the next steps in the article that will provide a solution to this problem. (Hint: Reusable travel containers !)

If you’re unsure whether your accommodation provides complimentary travel size toiletries, check their website or better yet, send them an email. Want a faster response? Call them.

To help you determine the products you may or may not need, you’ll find a list of toiletries examples below:

Now that you’ve gone through the entire list of every possible beauty product you own, create two piles: one for items you don’t need to take and one for items you absolutely do.

AmoVee 2 in 1 Flat Iron – Dual Voltage

For example:

  • Do you need five hair styling products or can you choose just one? Use something like  this  2-in-1 curling/flat iron duo
  • Instead of razors and hair removal creams, how about a wax before your trip? I like no-heat strips like these
  • Can you leave behind your nail polish and get a gel manicure instead? Read this post on making your vacation nails last
  • Do you need several items to comb or brush your hair or can you use just one like this  foldable wet brush with a mirror?
Is it possible to temporarily hold off on using any products? If so, do it!

TRAVEL BEAUTY TIP:   Find out if your accommodation offers products such as shampoo, shower gel, hair dryer, etc. Some hotels even have additional complimentary items at reception such as razors, toothpaste, and other small essentials. Just ask!

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps

One of the best ways to minimize toiletries is to choose multi-use products or items.  Determine if there are any products you already own that can work double-duty. Choose between two products that serve the same purpose.

Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps  and  Sea To Summit Wilderness Wash  are two of the most popular travel all-in-one travel products.

Other items to consider:

  • Is it possible to pack 4-in-1 facial cloths like these instead of taking face wash, scrub, and  makeup wipes?
  • Can you use a 2-in-1 shampoo plus conditioner like these ?
  • Would you consider a tinted moisturizer or BB cream? This one’s my fave.
  • Can you use your straightener as a curling iron? Better yet, choose a 2-in-1 curling/flat iron duo like this
  • Have you ever seen double ended makeup brushes? Save space with these

There are various multi-use products on the market, or you can use a few long-term travel hacks like I do, such as:

  • Baby powder as dry shampoo
  • Shampoo as shower gel (only for short periods of time)
  • Conditioner as shaving cream
  • Face scrub as body scrub
  • Body moisturizer to smooth hair flyaways

the-ultimate-guide-to-travel-toiletries

Nars Multiple | Eco Tools Brush Set

You’d be surprised at how many products can be used for multiple needs. Things like coconut oil  or other natural oils can be used as a body moisturizer, shave gel, and split end treatment! Tip: The best coconut oil is cold-pressed, unrefined, and good enough to eat.

There are also various multi-use makeup products  such as my all-time fave:  Nars The Multiple !

Read these tips on how to minimize toiletry products for even more tips!

Have you ever paid attention to how much shampoo you use? I only wash my hair every other day, so a 3 oz. travel size can last me a week!

How long is your trip? Make note of how much product you use for the duration of that time. Now that you know what items you absolutely have to pack, it’s time to determine how much of them you actually need.

Essentials such as shampoo, toothpaste, and moisturizers are particularly important. Don’t forget to test out bath, skincare, and makeup products. Make note so you can refer back when you’re ready to make the final plan.

Tip: avoid taking liquids in your carryon by replacing them with solid toiletries and travel wipes !

the-ultimate-guide-to-travel-toiletries

Editor’s Favorite Reusable Makeup Remover: Kiki & Josie

Once you have a better idea of what you actually need then consider other ways to downsize such as:

  • Instead of taking nail polish remover, can you take a few individual wipes like these instead?
  • Do you need an entire bottle of foundation or can you use a small container like this to take only what you will use?
  • Mini-nail polish bottles like these are a good choice, if you can’t stand chipped nails.
  • Read these travel makeup hacks for more ideas!

Skincare tends to be more personalized, but try not to bring more than three skincare items: a cleanser, treatment (for acne or wrinkles), and moisturizer. If you use a skincare system different from this one, try to cut it down to three products.

Empty Lip Gloss Balm Container

Choose appropriate travel containers. Many times, 3 oz bottles are too big for a one or two-week trip, so buy various sizes and take only the amount you will use.

Instead of immediately buying “travel-size” containers in 3oz or 100ml bottles, get a range of sizes including 1oz , 2oz , and smaller jars like these , too.

Tip: Replace glass containers with plastic to minimize weight and avoid breakage.

Read this post on the best travel containers  for more info!

Do a test run to see if everything fits in your toiletry bag. If your belongings don’t fit, consider using multi-use products such as a shampoo/conditioner combo, using conditioner as shaving cream, or baby shampoo for your hair and body.

Probably the biggest impact on my packing has been the tips to reduce and decant toiletries. I have followed this website and FB page for several years and the first thing I realized was that my toiletry footprint in my suitcase can be much smaller. This, in turn, makes for more room in small bathrooms (I typically cruise). Thanks for all your great info!!!

Vera Kozlowski

This is a great post, very helpful for thos of us that think we need to bring it all with us. Thank you for helping us travel lighter!

Charlotte Hicks

Sort of in the toiletries category, if traveling to South East Asia, I highly recommend getting a small pack of toilet seat covers and travel toilet paper (or carry tissues). No guarantee that there will be any available in locations other than your hotels. Otherwise, there is a hose with a spray handle for you to use, and that’s it. :0

Tabitha DePaolo

I struggle with packing toiletries and overpacking things. I really appreciate this step by step guide that holds my hand and walks me through every step of packing so I don’t get overwhelmed, confused, or frustrated trying to figure everything out.

This is the most helpful travel blog, as I have always struggled with my liquids leaking when I fly. Thx for posting your excellent resources!

I love the compass rose packing cubes and look forward to taking them to Paris and Amsterdam the end of October.

This article has been a lifesaver as my toiletry bag is out of control! I learned many new ways of pairing it down and found some great containers to make that happen. The tips will also help my clear liquids bag be more manageable! Thank you for the great ideas.

Molly Hillman

I love all of these suggestions! I now have the flat-it pack it from eBags and also the lip balm containers which are genius! Thank you!

Dot

Lots of good tips, but beware of local restrictions when traveling; e.g., many African countries are very restrictive about plastics. Plastic bags are bad for the animals… If the plastic bag could be a 1-use bag, it might be prohibited even though you plan to use it multiple times during your trip. Some countries prohibit the shopping bags from the duty-free shops. There could be fines and imprisonment. Just a reminder to check restrictions in your designation country.

Alex

Very good point, thanks for sharing Dot!

NutmegsMom

I find it very informative to see what everyone says about downsizing toiletries. Thanks for sharing a great post. And the comments!

So glad you found this guide helpful!

Minimizing my toiletries and my toiletry case is the challenge I must overcome. I just came back from a 16 day trip to Austria. Individual zipper pouches not only create more bulk but also more weight. Reading your well written articles will assist me in this challenge.

Allison

I used those round clear jars on my last trip, but I couldn’t really get a grip on the lid and base to separate the two 🙁 I’m going back to using old empty jars of product and decanting into them instead.

Zoey Blue

I just want to thank Travel Fashion Girl and everyone that is part of this community for the inspiration and know-how for successful travel when abroad and also when dreaming from home. Taming toiletries remains a challenge! Using multi-purpose (lips, cheeks, eyes) make-up helps minimize make up, and sample sizes (like tiny mascara) are helpful, as is repotting items into much smaller containers versus buying travel sizes. Thanks for all the tips!

Kelly Settle

Great tips. Toiletries are the most challenging for me.

Another great lesson from Alex at TFG! I have more toiletries and medicines than clothes to take on my 15 day trip to the UK. I leave Thursday and am still refining my packing. These toilette tips are sooo helpful! In fact, all of Alex’s blogs are so helpful! I’m so glad I found this group!!

We first started traveling internationally in 2013 and were determined to do carry-on only. I thought it was impossible until I discovered TFG. Toiletries were the most difficult for me to figure out. 9 years later I still use all the tips I’ve learned from here.

Thanks to your tips I was able to downsize my toiletries and pack in a carry on only for my recent 11 day trip to Europe. Never did I ever think I could make this happen!

I’m so scared to travel with a checked bag theses days and my toiletries are the thing that I was most concerned about fitting into a carry on. I love all the downsizing tips and can’t wait to use them for my next trip in October! Thanks Alex.

Sheila

I like shopping the travel size section in my drug store and at Target. I find lots of different size containers there. I sometimes buy items just for the containers and then fill them with my products.

Leanne

This post helped me so much when I was packing for my trip to France in April 2022. I think I was fairly successful in packing only the toiletries that I needed and was planning to check my bag, anyway. I also watched the video again when packing for a shorter trip to NY and was able to take even less toiletries on that trip! Thanks for all of your tips and tricks on safety too in the Paris 2022 Packing Guide!

Nadja Jackson

It’s amazing how little I actually need when I travel—I use lots of products but a tiny amount goes a long way and helps so much with both volume and weight. I decant into a combination of the tiny “lip gloss” tubes and have the tiny deodorant sticks as well for solids (perfect for using up the end of a large stick that wouldn’t have come out anyway). Feels good to not purchase more throwaway plastic for travel sizes since I just refill when I get home and then I’m ready for the next trip! Also I highly recommend lotion bars.

Oh my goodness! This has helped me so much. Packing my liquids was my number one worry about consolidating to a carry on.

Heather

What a helpful post! I’m just going to be traveling stateside, but this gave me some great ideas as our space is limited. Thanks TFG!

valerie mudrow

I have learned so many great ideas for decanting makeup etc. I now have lip gloss tubes, contact lens cases and travel size. It makes traveling so much easier – thank you!

Christine

We all have such different needs and non-negotiables, but this article really takes us through the steps to figure out what works for us. Using these tips (and with some trial runs) I’ve been able to get down to a small Sea To Summit toiletry bag. Still refining with each trip….

Sandra

Downsizing my toiletries is my biggest challenge! Thank you for these great tips.

Diane

Wow this information is so helpful. I will use many of these tips.

Simone

thank you for these tipps. I always feel very accomplished after I pack my clothes but than comes everything else, like toiletries and electronics and my backpack is bursting.

Sandra

Your suggestions and tips have been so helpful when preparing for an adventure. Thank you!

Anne

Every article you write is helpful, but packing toiletries is my biggest struggle. So thank you for this one!

Robin Polito

Using contact lens cases were a game changer on my recent Safari. We were limited to a soft -sided duffle and we wanted to carry on due to Heathrow so this was the way to go. It is amazing how much product fits in each case and how much product you actually use on a trip. I then used the cases on our recent road trip to Arizona. Never had a single spill either trip.

Fern Rabil

This is my all-time favorite post. Life -changing, making carry-on travel the only way to go now. Huge eye-opener!!!

Tracy Trencher Morra

This post is incredible. So much useful information! Thank you!

Karen

I have sliced up solid shampoo and conditioner bars into smaller pieces, to make ones the right size for a weeklong trip.

Katrina Gillett

Thanks for the list!

Vicki L Patterson

There is now available shampoo, conditioner, bodywash, soap, laundry detergent in sheet form, and mouthwash and toothpaste as tablets, lotions in bar form,

Hi Vicki, thank you for sharing your great toiletries tip with us! ?

We love solid toiletries and have a range of options here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/solid-toiletries-for-travel/

Rick

One trick I found on the web that works great is to use contact lens cases. You can put a few days/week supply in them, mark them with a black sharpie, and put in your toiletry bag.

Hi Rick, thank you for sharing your great travel hack for packing your toiletries with us! Happy travels! ?

Barbara

Someone on your blog had mentioned she uses plastic paint cups from Michaels to put her make up in. What a great idea! I just purchased (16) 1/6 oz cups for $2 ( with 50% off coupon) and put my eye cream, under eye concealer, blush…. in them. They are awesome! And they are airtight, so the product won’t dry out! Thank you, whoever you are!

Wow, that is amazing Barbara, so happy to hear it worked so well with packing your toiletries!! Thank you for sharing! Happy Travels!

Jessica

I wear contacts and somehow have loads of extra contact cases. I use them for putting my face moisturizer, BB cream, salve (in case of cuts or infections) in for trips up to a week. I just use a sharpie to mark something on the outside of the case so I know what is inside.

Hi Jessica, thank you for sharing your great travel tip! 🙂

Elena Garcia

Love your tips! They have helped me to be a more confident traveler!

Gabriella

I do the same because I know how much I need for products compared to others.

Kay Lewis

Two products worth the money (and I’m a cheapo). Blinc mascara. Order online. It is water-proof and rub-proof. To remove, rub with fingers and warm water. No remover required.

ColoreScience sunblock, SP 50. It’s a powder, with the brush built in. No need to pack powder. And who re-applies gloppy lotion every 2 hours? My dermatologist says the best sunblock is the one you use.

Hi Kay, thank you so much for sharing your travel toiletries! 🙂

Sierra

🙂 sounds great! Thanks.

Connie

I have found that some doctors offices have small and very small bottles that you can get for free, if you ask nicely. One example is eye doctors, who have these bottles for sample eyedrops. I’ve gotten 6 in this way….for free. And they are the perfect size for travel!

Hi Connie, thank you so much for sharing your great travel tip for toiletries! 🙂

What to pack in your travel hygiene kit

author_avatar

Recently updated on August 14th, 2023 at 03:45 pm

As the COVID-19 pandemic has spread around the world, we’ve all been more conscious than ever of our hygiene practices – especially when travelling. While you can’t avoid every germ when you travel, you can definitely minimise your contact by packing a personal hygiene kit. From hand sanitisers and antibacterial wipes, to mouthwash and a thermometer, here’s what to pack in your travel hygiene kit.

Hand sanitiser

person using hand sanitiser travel hygiene kit

The best way to protect yourself from germs is to regularly wash your hands with soap and water. But for the times when you don’t have soap and water nearby, the next best thing is to clean your hands with a sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol. Keep a few travel-sized bottles in your travel hygiene kit and you’ll always have peace of mind that you can clean your hands.

All that hand washing is sure to dry out your skin. Pack some moisturising hand cream in your personal hygiene kit to keep them soft and silky. You don’t want to deal with irritated or cracked skin while you’re travelling!

Antibacterial wipes

antibacterial wipes travel hygiene kit

You can catch infectious diseases by droplets in the air and by touching contaminated surfaces, so you should always carry a pack of antibacterial wipes to disinfect the surfaces around you. The dirtiest areas on an airplane include seatbelts, armrests, tray tables, seatback pockets, buttons, window shades, air vents and bathrooms, while the most high-risk surfaces in hotels are door handles, light switches, remotes, desks, toilets, taps and sinks. Be sure to use the wipes the correct way , including keeping the surface visibly wet for the required amount of time, and only wiping one way to reduce the spread of the germs.

box of tissues next to a window

If you need to cough, sneeze or even sniffle when travelling, you should always have tissues on hand to cover your mouth and nose. The used tissue should be quickly disposed of in a bin. Never put them back into your pocket or bag to use again and avoid using handkerchiefs. You should also always wash your hands after you’ve disposed of the tissues. It’s also a great idea to bring spares, just in case you’re sitting next to someone who is coughing or sneezing without covering their mouth.

person wearing a face mask

Most health experts do not recommend the use of face masks to protect against diseases. However, the masks are crucial for preventing the spread of disease to others. You should always wear a face mask if you are unwell, or suspect you are unwell, or if you are taking care of someone who is sick while travelling. If you’re sitting next to a stranger on a flight, you can wear a cloth mask or surgical mask as an extra precaution, or offer one of your spare face masks if they are coughing and sneezing without protection. When wearing a mask, make sure it covers your nose and your mouth.

Disposable gloves

If you don’t have access to antibacterial wipes, or you can’t get to them before touching a surface such as a hotel room doorknob, you can always wear disposable gloves as an extra precaution. Make sure you always throw the gloves in the bin after touching any surfaces, and never reuse them.

Thermometer

fever thermometer travel hygiene kit

Pack a thermometer in your travel hygiene kit to help you keep tabs on your temperature. A fever is one of the most common symptoms of coronavirus and many other illnesses, so a thermometer will give you peace of mind if you’re worried about your temperature. If you do have a fever, the thermometer will be useful for monitoring the situation and giving doctors critical information.

Nasal spray and eye drops

bottle pouring water into glass

Airplane cabins are extremely dry places, and this causes the mucous membranes in your mouth, nose and throat to dry out. This stops them from trapping germs and bacteria which leave you much more vulnerable to catching viruses and other diseases. You can give your mucous membranes some extra love and keep them moisturised by using nasal spray and eye drops. It’s also important to drink plenty of water as your body can be depleted of up to 1.5 lit r es of water on a three-hour flight alone! You should also avoid drinking alcohol, soft drinks, coffee and tea, as these are known to dehydrate you, but you can always jazz up your water with some electrolyte powder for an extra hydration boost.

straw in a glass of water

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that food hygiene practices are crucial to stopping the spread of the coronavirus. When travelling, it’s best to avoid drinking from glasses in bars and restaurants and to use a straw instead. To be on the safe side, pack a few reusable straws in your travel hygiene kit and make sure you disinfect them after each use.

toothpaste toothbrush and glass of water

Add an extra layer of protection against germs while travelling and keep your mouth clean! You should always brush your teeth regularly, even when on a flight, and use a travel-sized germ-killing mouthwash. It will help to get rid of any bacteria lurking around your mouth, plus it helps to keep your throat moist and your breath fresh.

blocks of body soap travel hygiene kit

After a long day of travelling, there’s nothing better than jumping into a warm shower and washing away all the grime. Pack some antibacterial body soap in your personal hygiene kit and give yourself a good scrub to remove any germs you may have picked up. Make sure you also place your worn clothes in a separate bag to be washed as soon as possible, to avoid bringing any germs into your room.

person sleeping in bed with feet sticking out

The best way to ward off illness is to take care of your immune system by getting plenty of sleep. It’s extra important to get enough sleep while you’re travelling, as being on the move can be quite draining on your body. Pack an eye mask, some comfy clothes, or your favourite travel pillow, to help you get some quality shut-eye and give your immune system a boost.

Warm clothes or a blanket

person wearing warm jumper in airport

While it’s important to have the air-conditioner or an air vent going to help circulate the air and remove any airborne germs, it’s also important not to get too cold. Staying warm will help your immune system stop you from getting sick, so pack a sweater, thick socks or even your own travel blanket to avoid the air-conditioned chill.

BENTONVILLE, Ark., July 25, 2023  — There’s still time to pack your bags – Walmart is taking its valued Walmart+ members on a new, more rewarding journey before the summer travel season becomes this fall’s show-and-tell. Beginning today, Walmart+ members can book getaways through  WalmartPlusTravel.com  and get Walmart Cash. Walmart+ members will receive 5% Walmart Cash on hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals and activities bookings, 2% Walmart Cash on all flights and a blended rate of Walmart Cash on vacation packages 1 .

Travel booking on WalmartPlusTravel.com is powered by Expedia Group’s White Label Template technology, giving Walmart+ members access to more than 900,000 properties, 500+ airlines, 100+ car rental companies and thousands of activities around the world. This new offering will make shopping for travel a win-win for Walmart+ members as they begin getting Walmart Cash, previously  Walmart Rewards , on all aspects of their vacation getaways.

"We're bringing together the ultimate savings membership and vacation booking site to deliver a first-ever travel-focused benefit for Walmart+ members," said Venessa Yates, senior vice president and general manager of Walmart+. "Combined with our other benefits — including free delivery, streaming and savings on fuel — we’re creating a membership that saves customers time and money, whether they’re at home or having fun at their favorite vacation destination.”

Here’s how it works:

  • Easy to find:  Walmart+ members will access travel through their member benefits hub in the app or WalmartPlusTravel.com.
  • Easy to book:  Members can choose travel options like flights, hotels, vacation rentals, car rentals, packages and activities.
  • Easy to earn: After the booking is confirmed, any Walmart Cash received will appear in the member’s Walmart wallet. Walmart Cash will become available 30 days after travel is completed and can be used on future Walmart purchases or cashed out in store.

“We’re delighted to launch this collaboration with Walmart, America’s largest retailer, making planning, shopping and booking travel a new and seamless part of Walmart’s shopping experience. Together, we’re connecting Walmart’s massive customer base with Expedia Group’s extensive array of travel supply partners from all around the world," said Ariane Gorin, president of Expedia for Business. "What's exciting is that with this collaboration, Walmart customers will benefit from Expedia's ongoing innovation through TravelOS, our A.I.-powered travel operating system, as we continue to add new product and feature updates to drive the best traveler experience.”

Walmart+ members will also have access to Expedia Group’s top tier, end-to-end customer service, handling all their travel needs from start to finish. Whether via live agents or by leveraging the company’s self-serve capabilities, like their A.I.-powered Virtual Agent tool, Expedia Group’s services allow members to ask questions about their trip or make changes with ease.

Walmart+ is consistently evolving to deliver what’s most important for members, most recently with the evolution of Walmart Rewards to Walmart Cash, the same great program, under a new name and with the added ability to cash-out in store. Over time, some of the components of Walmart Cash will expand to all customers, while additional ways to get Walmart Cash will remain exclusive to members, like Walmart+ Travel.

For more information about how to become a Walmart+ member, please visit  walmart.com/plus .

1 For example, if the package consisted of a hotel + flight, the Walmart Cash received would be 5% Walmart Cash on the hotel element and 2% Walmart Cash on the flight element.

16 Best Feminine Wipes of 2022, According to Gynecologists

Stash these wipes in your gym bag for a fresh feel post-workout.

best feminine wipes

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

The Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab fiber scientists consulted with leading gynecologists to find the best feminine wipes that are safe to use and will keep you feeling fresh. These picks are based on brands with previous top performance and wipes with rave online reviews.

Are feminine wipes safe to use?

Alyssa Dweck M.D ., a leading gynecologist in Westchester County, New York and author of The Complete A to Z for Your V , says that in most cases, feminine wipes are safe to use to freshen up “in a pinch,” such as after an intense workout or sweaty commute. However, “for super sensitive skin, they may wreak havoc.” If you are prone to vaginal infections, it may be best to avoid wipes altogether — particularly scented options.

Some feminine wipes claim to be "pH balancing," but there are many caveats, Dr. Dweck says. The external vulva and vagina each have their own normal pH range, so " i f the wipe mirrors that pH, then applying them will maintain a normal pH." If a wipe contains alcohol, it may be called antibacterial, but "this property may not be long lasting and surely will not treat a bacterial infection," according to Dr. Dweck. Therefore, "pH balancing" or "antibacterial" claims on feminine wipes should not be the main reason for purchasing. Keep in mind that all feminine wipes are designed for external use and should never be used internally, "because the normal pH can be altered and thus infection can ensue," says Dr. Dweck.

Lastly, if you have a UTI, Dr. Dweck suggests using "plain water or a cotton washcloth with warm water" instead of feminine wipes . Whether feminine wipes could cause UTIs depends on the "individual and the ingredients of the wipes," as "some women are super sensitive or prone to UTIs," explains Dr. Dweck. What specifically caused the UTI can be tough to know, but it's best not to potentially irritate the region further.

Are baby wipes better than feminine wipes?

If you’re new to wipes, it’s best to stick with traditional feminine wipes before trying baby wipes as a replacement. Baby wipes and feminine wipes many times have similar ingredients, but some baby wipes may be irritating to use in your intimate area. When finding the best feminine wipe for you, Dr. Dweck says for many it can be “trial and error,” so it’s best to try a few different brands.

Do feminine wipes help with odor?

Feminine wipes are best suited to help with odors caused by sweat, and even so, “this is a Band-Aid effect,” according to Dr. Dweck. Every vagina has a natural odor that doesn't need to be masked, but if you’re experiencing unusual odors or any major irritation, Dr. Dweck suggests to consult with your gynecologist to rule out infection.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

As much as I have come to rely on joggers as my go-to bottoms when traveling, the increasingly warmer weather has me ready to ditch pants and reach for a pair of shorts. In a hunt for a versatile option, I came across these lightweight and breathable cargo shorts from Walmart — and they’re currently on sale for just $23.

Similarly to joggers or leggings, these shorts act as a catch-all for spring and summer travel. The fabric, which is made from a nylon and spandex blend, features a four-way stretch that makes the shorts a comfortable pick for long car rides and flights, daily wear, and camping trips. Plus the quick-dry, water-resistant fabric wicks away sweat, so you know they’ll last through a vigorous hike, fishing trip, or walk  — whether it’s sizzling hot or pouring down rain.

Yuyangdpb Cargo Hiking Shorts

While the cargo shorts can be worn for a variety of activities, including golfing, backpacking, and running, they feature a few hiking-specific features. They offer six roomy pockets — four in the front and two in the back — so you can keep all of your essential items with you while remaining hands-free on your hike. They also have a D-ring on the belt, which allows you to easily hook on additional hiking gear, and a stretchy waistband to keep you comfortable while moving and sitting. One reviewer wore these to the Grand Canyon and said the pockets comfortably held a water bottle, wallet, keys, and more.

If you have outdoor vacations or activities coming up, you’ll be glad you added these water-resistant shorts to your wardrobe ahead of the summer, especially while they’re on sale. They come in eight colors, including shades of khaki, green, brown, blue, and black, and they’re machine-washable for easy care. One shopper even claimed they are the best shorts for the summer, adding that the lightweight material doesn’t stick to you.

Make sure your travel and hiking wardrobe is ready for warmer weather by grabbing these Yuyangdpb Cargo Hiking Shorts while they’re on sale. For similar styles, keep scrolling through for more affordable options at Walmart.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

walmart travel hygiene

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

walmart travel hygiene

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

walmart travel hygiene

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

walmart travel hygiene

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

walmart travel hygiene

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

walmart travel hygiene

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

walmart travel hygiene

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

walmart travel hygiene

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

walmart travel hygiene

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

walmart travel hygiene

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.

Here’s My $50 a Month Grocery Bill at Walmart

G rocery prices have remained stubbornly high since the pandemic four years ago. Luckily, there are still ways to cut back on your grocery bill at discount stores like Walmart.

Try This: How To Get $340 Per Year in Cash Back on Gas and Other Things You Already Buy

Based on data from the Federal Reserve, grocery prices have risen by 25%. In February, Walmart announced that consumers should expect lower prices, according to Food & Wine. Doug McMillon, Walmart’s president and chief executive, said the price for certain items were lower than in 2023 – including eggs, apples and deli snacks – but higher for other products, such as asparagus and blackberries.

On Reddit, Travel_Junkie5791 shared how one person can feed themselves on a very limited  monthly budget . The Redditor chose Walmart and claimed that it only costs about $50 per month.

“I am in a urban area in the Midwest. Yes, I understand grocery prices vary greatly depending on your location. This is just what I came up with from the info available to me!” wrote Travel_Junkie5791. “Please seek out food pantries, shop sales & clearance bins, apply for SNAP/WIC if you qualify, shop at small ethnic markets, buy bulk, or whatever else you need to do to stretch your food dollars!”

Travel_Junkie5791 also noted that they purposely did not go hunting for sales or factor in coupons. These are just everyday prices in stores. Here’s the weekly grocery list:

  • 1 lb pasta
  • 2.25 lb potatoes
  • 1 loaf of bread (22 slices, or 3 slices/day)
  • 1 lb chicken drumsticks (about 3 per week)
  • 1 lb frozen veggies
  • 1.25 lb apples (about 4-5)
  • 1 lb carrots
  • 15 eggs
  • 1/2 lb margarine (2 sticks)
  • 1 qt milk
  • 1/4 lb (4 oz) peanut butter
  • 8 oz unpopped popcorn

Travel_Junkie5791 also provided a sample menu, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

Sponsored: Owe the IRS $10K or more? Schedule a FREE consultation to see if you qualify for tax relief.

Two eggs with a slice of toast. You can use a ½ tbsp scoop of peanut butter, butter or cinnamon sugar. For a drink, a ½ cup of milk.

A peanut butter sandwich with two slices of bread and 2 tbsp of peanut butter. On the side, an apple for one day, carrot sticks the next day and salted popcorn for the remaining days.

Three times a week, prepare one chicken drumstick, one baked potato with butter and steamed vegetables with butter. For the remaining four days, cook up ¼ lb of pasta, and use 1.5 oz tomato sauce with Italian seasoning and garlic powder. For the side, use carrot sticks.

Travel_Junkie5791 recommended cooking the entire bag of drumsticks at once and dividing them into even portions. Keep one portion out and freeze the rest. You can also cook the full pound of pasta and set the rest aside in the fridge for dinners later in the week.

Travel_Junkie5791 recommended popcorn, carrot sticks or 2 tbsp of peanut butter. You should also have one extra egg and one extra slice of bread that you can add to snacks or another meal.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

walmart travel hygiene

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

walmart travel hygiene

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

walmart travel hygiene

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

walmart travel hygiene

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

walmart travel hygiene

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

walmart travel hygiene

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

walmart travel hygiene

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

walmart travel hygiene

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

walmart travel hygiene

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

walmart travel hygiene

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

walmart travel hygiene

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

walmart travel hygiene

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

walmart travel hygiene

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

walmart travel hygiene

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

walmart travel hygiene

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

walmart travel hygiene

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

walmart travel hygiene

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

walmart travel hygiene

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

walmart travel hygiene

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
