Naperville sun | cook county clerk karen yarbrough dies at 73, naperville sun, naperville sun | naperville central student killed in swiss avalanche remembered for ‘adventurous’ spirit.

Rescuers work after an avalanche fell on the Riffelberg area, Switzerland, April 2, 2024. Naperville Central High School freshman Aleksas "Alex" Beiga and two other people were killed in an avalanche near the Swiss resort of Zermatt, police said. One person was flown to a hospital with serious injuries. The avalanche occurred at about 2 p.m. April 2, 2024, in an off-piste area of the Riffelberg, above the resort and below the famed Matterhorn peak. Rescuers recovered three bodies and the injured skier, a 20-year-old Swiss man. (Kantonspolizei Wallis/Keystone via AP)

Alex Beiga loved adventure.

Biking, snowboarding, hiking — outdoors was where he’d usually be, would have liked to always be, if he could.

“He wasn’t afraid to just do stuff,” his sister, Eva Beiga, said. “He just had that adventurous spirit in him and was always wanting to do more.”

Adventure recently took Alex to the Swiss Alps. It was his dream to go snowboarding in Switzerland, Eva said. Their dad — an Olympic swimmer — and mom made it happen this year, while Alex, 15, was on spring break from his freshman year at Naperville Central High School.

Alex’s parents returned home to Naperville from the trip on Wednesday. But he wasn’t with them.

Alex was one of three people who died in an avalanche near the Swiss resort of Zermatt on Monday, according to interviews with family and those close to him. Other victims included a 58-year-old Swiss man and a 25-year-old Canadian woman, according to police from the Switzerland canton (state) of Valais.

The avalanche occurred about 2 p.m. local time, the Associated Press reported, citing Swiss authorities. A fourth person, a 20-year-old Swiss man, was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.

Eva, 20, heard from her mom Monday. She was away at college in Connecticut at the time but went back to Naperville Tuesday, she said, to wait for her parents’ return.

“It was a shock,” she said, speaking over the phone Thursday.

Though five years apart, Alex was her “built-in best friend,” Eva said.

Their family as a whole was close and prioritized spending time together, Eva added, even if it was just time spent together at home. When they did get away, Eva said, Colorado was their vacation spot of choice. Over the past few summers, that’s where they went, she recalled.

Colorado this past summer was one of the last trips Eva and Alex took together, she said.

Adventure found Alex there, too.

“We got to do a lot of those adventurous things together. We got to go on bike rides with him, got to walk around with him,” Eva said. “And (those) are memories that I’ll cherish forever.”

When Alex wasn’t tackling a new escapade, he was in the water. He and Eva grew up swimming. They took after their dad, Nerijus “Ned” Beiga, who swam for Lithuania in the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, according to Eva and the Olympics website.

Both Alex and Eva were a part of the Academy Bullets Swim Club, which has several locations across Illinois. It was at Academy Bullets that the siblings met “some of the best people” and coaches, Eva said, and found a community.

Brian Brown met Alex when Alex transferred into the Academy Bullets program out of Westmont. Brown had been Alex’s swim coach until about 18 months ago, he said in a call Wednesday. They parted ways when both Brown and Alex transferred to different academy locations, but they still saw each other at meets or the occasional practice, Brown said.

Brown remembered Alex as hardworking and constantly positive.

“He had this innate ability to know when to crack a joke. When practice got real hard, (when) his teammates … were getting a little discouraged, he knew when to make it funny,” Brown said.

Jokes weren’t the only way Alex kept the mood light at practice. He’d often ask Brown to throw on some music — preferably classic rock.

“He was always (asking to) put on, you know, AC/DC, put on Tom Petty, put on Van Halen,” Brown said.

Alex’s death, Brown said, is a “big loss for our program, a big loss for his teammates that aren’t going to have that happy kid at practice anymore and it’s a big loss for the future — whatever he was going to do, he was going to be very successful.”

Wednesday was the first Academy Bullets practice that Alex’s team spent without him, according to Todd Capen, who had been Alex’s coach over the past year and a half out of the academy’s Aurora location.

Alex trained in the Academy Bullets’ senior group, Capen said. They practiced a couple of hours a day, six days a week, he said. They were close-knit.

“It was very difficult,” Capen said of Wednesday’s practice. “A lot of tears, some anger.”

Capen said he kept reminding the team that “they shouldn’t have to deal with (this).”

“Fifteen-year-olds shouldn’t have to deal with grieving other 15-year-olds,” he said.

Still, he encouraged Alex’s former teammates to “remember all the things that they got to do with (him) that made them smile.”

Eva said she’ll miss how Alex always knew how to make her laugh. She and her parents have been “trying to hang in there as much as we can and be there for one another,” Eva explained.

A steady outpouring of support and messages over the past few days has helped, she said.

“It’s also been amazing to see all the people reaching out and just saying how much of an influence Alex had in their lives and how he was able to bring so much positivity and joy to a lot of people,” Eva said.

In a campus email to parents and guardians Tuesday, Naperville Central Principal Jackie Thornton offered “sincere condolences” to Alex’s family and friends.

She also extended counseling services to students as the school “mourn(s) the loss of our fellow Redhawk.”

As of Thursday, a GoFundMe launched for Alex has amassed about $48,000. Family friend Neringa Mockus started the fundraiser. It was the least she could do, she said, reached by phone Thursday.

Mockus’ family members have been friends with the Beigas for years, she said. Her son, Simas, and her daughter, Emilija, grew up with Alex. To her, Alex felt like a son, Mockus said.

When she heard about Monday’s avalanche, Mockus had hoped that Alex would be found alive, she said. Hearing that he was gone, Mockus said, was “horrible.”

“Telling my son was just the most horrific thing,” she said. “It’s hard. It will be hard for a very long time.”

She added, “My goodness, I’ll miss everything about this kid. …He (lightened) up the room, you know. He was this super joyful person.”

Emilija, 19, echoed her mom, describing Alex as “the definition of the life of the party.”

“It’s very surreal. … Like wake me up from this nightmare,” she said.

Emilija said the only thing that is letting her “take a breath of fresh air” is knowing that Alex made it to the Swiss Alps.

“He was looking at mountains, and he loved that,” she said. “And I know that he just felt very at home.”

Alex Ovechkin’s last stand: How a Dubai trip and a new stick revived a record pursuit — and the Caps’ season

The search for Alex Ovechkin ’s missing scoring touch was exhaustive when he lost the one thing he’s always been able to count on in the first half of this season.

A man in hot pursuit of the NHL ’s all-time goals record was suddenly shuffling between four or five different makes and models of sticks. It prompted the Washington Capitals coaching staff to do a deep dive through stats and video in an attempt to find answers for why the pucks weren’t going in the net with more frequency. And it naturally left teammates looking in the mirror, not to mention all around the ice sheet, for ways they might help get their captain back on track.

“His goal-scoring standard is way above the rest of the world, and when you’re not clicking on that pace, I think there’s a lot of questions that are asked,” Capitals winger T.J. Oshie told The Athletic recently.

“ What’s going on? What’s wrong? Is it his linemates? Is he slowing down? Is age finally catching up to him? ”

There was simply no precedent for the 43-game stretch from mid-October to late January where Ovechkin scored just eight goals. That included a 14-game run without any — by far the longest drought of a career in which he’s claimed the NHL goal-scoring crown nine times in 18 seasons before this one.

While everyone around the Capitals went searching for answers, it introduced a new layer of doubt into the wider conversation about whether Ovechkin would be able to topple Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 regular-season goals.

That was starting to feel like an inevitability after he reeled off 42 and 50 goals the past two seasons, but when Ovechkin stumbled into the All-Star break on pace for 17 this winter, it was only natural to wonder if at age 38 a precipitous decline had begun.

Then he mounted a last stand.

It began in the least likely of places: eight time zones from D.C. in the United Arab Emirates, where Ovechkin rode a camel in the desert while vacationing with his wife Nastya and children Sergei and Ilya, and rubbed elbows with former soccer star Wayne Rooney.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Wayne Rooney (@waynerooney)

The getaway provided Ovechkin with some much-needed family time and warm weather. It also offered a chance to clear his head. And it marked a turning point for both the player and the team.

The Capitals were 11th in the Eastern Conference entering their nine-day break. Ovechkin sensed a renewed spirit when the team reconvened in early February.

“I think it’s the best time of the year,” he said. “After the All-Star break, nobody thought we were going to be in this playoff spot, but I think all of us turned our brains on (to) a different level.”

In retrospect, there were signs of a turnaround heading into the break. In the final game before the trip to Dubai, Jan. 27 at Dallas, Ovechkin scored from long distance with a seeing-eye shot through traffic — the first of two six-on-five goals by Washington with goaltender Charlie Lindgren pulled for an extra attacker to secure a valuable point in the standings.

It wasn’t what you would call a vintage Ovechkin goal, nor was the one he put in off Nils Åman ’s skate against Vancouver on Feb. 11.

8️⃣3️⃣5️⃣ pic.twitter.com/5iW99DeaMU — Washington Capitals (@Capitals) February 11, 2024

Both goals counted, though, and they helped fuel a run where he scored eight goals in eight games, bringing his season total from eight goals in 43 games to 16 in 51. That served as a pressure relief valve after so much had seemed to be working against him, according to first-year Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery.

“A few of those go in and now he’s feeling good — now look out,” Carbery said. “Goal scorers, when they get on a roll and they get confident … it feels like when they get a puck anywhere off the rush or in the offensive zone, there’s a chance it goes in. That’s what I’ve seen change.

“The confidence level and swagger that he has now out on the ice, he looks like old Ovi.”

He’s filling the net like he once did, too.

Ovechkin scored another eight goals during a five-game stretch in March, becoming the oldest player in league history to accomplish the feat.

And he has settled on a Bauer Vapor Hyperlite after trying out a variety of sticks earlier in the year.

“Right now I’m sticking with one,” he said. “I’m pretty happy with it.”

Who can blame him? As the Capitals surged past the Devils , Islanders and Red Wings into a playoff spot, he scored 17 times in 23 games.

“Every time he gets the puck, the crowd’s more into it now, and it feels like he can score at any moment,” said teammate Dylan Strome . “When he’s on your team, that’s a great feeling.”

Added Oshie, “The run he’s on, it just feels like the Ovi hunger for scoring is back and is in full effect. I’ve never seen anyone like it. There’s obviously guys in this league that are very good and very good goal-scorers, but in my own eyes, personally, I’ve never seen someone that wants to score more goals than O does.”

His turnaround has also vaulted the Capitals into the middle of an unlikely playoff chase that will be in a particularly bright spotlight when Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins visit Capital One Arena on Thursday night.

Amid a season in which Washington moved on from former cornerstones Nicklas Bäckström and Evgeny Kuznetsov — as well as trading veterans Anthony Mantha and Joel Edmundson for draft picks at the deadline — the Capitals have remained competitive and fulfilled an organizational mandate by providing Ovechkin a platform to continue chasing down Gretzky.

He’s 46 goals from matching the NHL’s all-time best total — a number that seems well within reach before his contract expires following the 2025-26 season.

As for what briefly slowed his pursuit earlier this season, there are a number of different factors.

Ovechkin isn’t generating offensive looks at the same rate he once did, and his shot totals were at the lowest of his career through the All-Star break. He believes the Capitals’ more “aggressive” approach since then has unlocked better opportunities.

Carbery said the coaching staff worked with Ovechkin on getting to the interior part of the ice more often and noted that he also had some bad luck in the form of six crossbars in the first month.

With time, some of those things started to even out. And the clock turned back.

“Luckily, we’re all patient enough,” Oshie said. “And, sure enough, here he is on an incredible tear and leading our team.”

Red Sox surpass early expectations with 7-3 trip to start the season

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Throughout spring training, Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora emphasized getting off to a strong start despite a 10-game road trip opening the season.

With Sunday’s 12-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels , Cora can say his team surpassed expectations.

The Red Sox return home with a 7-3 record, one game behind the Yankees in the AL East.

The last two times Boston has started with seven or more wins in itsr first 10 games — 2018 and ’21 — the Red Sox reached the postseason.

“It was a great road trip. Going to this season we recognized how challenging it is to come to the West coast right away,” Cora said. “The organization did everything possible to put these guys in a situation where they were going to be fresh and ready to go.”

When the Red Sox last opened with a long West Coast trip, they went 3-8 in 2019, one year after winning their fourth World Series title since 2004.

“We were better prepared coming into this one. In 2019, between the offseason, the roster we had and taking care of guys, it put us in a bad spot,” Cora said. “We were moving slow. I still remember a play in Oakland with Jackie (Bradley) and Mookie (Betts) where they let a fly ball drop between them. That’s when I was like, `Oh, we’re in trouble.’ It took awhile for us to get going.”

Boston’s great start can be attributed to power hitting and great pitching.

The Red Sox are tied for third in the majors and second in the American League with 13 home runs. They had four on Sunday, including three in the third inning. It was the second time in the three-game series against the Angels they went deep three times in a frame.

Tyler O’Neill, acquired in an offseason trade with St. Louis, is tied for the major league lead in homers with five. He also became the first player with least five home runs and five walks in their first nine games with the Red Sox.

Even hotter than O’Neill is the pitching.

Boston leads the majors with a 1.49 ERA, its lowest mark through 10 games and the lowest in the majors through 10 games since the 2005 Marlins at 1.34. No AL team had been that low since the 1982 Angels at 1.31.

“I think it’s a testament to how serious we took spring training serious to work and get ready,” catcher Reese McGuire said. “Sometimes you can kind of have fun and all of a sudden get to the season and kind of get an early wakeup call. So this year, I think we just we were focused and hungry to be better.”

The starting staff is 5-1, allowing a major league-low nine earned runs in 53 innings. They are second in the majors with 62 strikeouts and are holding opponents to a .191 batting average.

Tanner Houck, the first pitcher in franchise history to throw at least six scoreless innings with seven or more strikeouts in the first two outings of a season, is trying to maintain perspective.

“Phenomenal. You know, it’s something you don’t want to lean your hat on too much,” Houck said. “Great start to the season, but also knowing that we still have, 150 games to go. So with that being said, just go out there and continue to work and keep getting better.”

Starting Tuesday, Cora will begin to see if another point of emphasis comes to fruition — playing better at Fenway Park.

After Boston had the AL’s best home mark from 2016-18, the confines of Fenway have not been friendly to the Red Sox. They have gone 180-175 at home since 2019, ninth in the AL.

“We didn’t run the bases well, we didn’t play good defense, we didn’t pitch well at Fenway. We haven’t made Fenway uncomfortable to the opposition in a while,” Cora said. “It’s an awesome atmosphere. Sweet Caroline in the eighth and all that stuff. But man, when you’re down seven. Sweet Caroline doesn’t sound great, to be honest with you,

“We know in October it’s a different story, but for us to get to October, we’ve got to play better at home in the regular season.”

Boston will be home for 16 of its next 22, beginning Tuesday against defending AL East champion Baltimore. The 2004 World Series team and the late Tim Wakefield will be honored.

“This group bought into it in spring training, and for the first road trip it was amazing,” Cora said. “But now, we just got to be ready for it. Baltimore is probably the best team in the division. Everybody knows how good they are. This year is different with them right now. A lot of people picked them to go to the playoffs or win the World Series. So we know the challenge. We know who they are and what they do. We just got to be ready for Tuesday.”

Yankees complete stellar 6-1 road trip with 11-inning win over Diamondbacks

By CBS New York Team

Updated on: April 3, 2024 / 8:40 PM EDT / CBS/AP

PHOENIX -- Aaron Judge hit his first home run of the season and added an RBI double in a two-run 11th inning, boosting the New York Yankees over the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 on Wednesday to complete an opening 6-1 road trip.

"Everyone knows 99 is our captain -- we go where we he goes," Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo said in a reference to Judge's jersey number. "He's somebody who works hard every day. You can tell, he's the captain for a reason."

Verdugo broke a 2-2 tie in the 10th with his first Yankees home run, a two-run drive off Kevin Ginkel. Arizona tied the score in the bottom half off Clay Holmes (1-0), helped by shortstop Anthony Volpe's throwing error.

With runners at the corners in the 11th following Gleyber Torres' single, Scott McGough (0-1) balked in the go-ahead run when he failed to come to a set position with Juan Soto at the plate. After Soto flied out, Judge lined a double for a two-run lead.

Judge entered 3 for 24 with one RBI, his fewest hits ever through six games. He gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead with a two-run, opposite-field homer to right-center in the fourth off Merrill Kelly.

Arizona closed in the bottom of the 11th when Jorge Barrosa hit a two-out, RBI single. Because of previous moves by manager Torey Lovullo, the D-backs didn't have a designated hitter and had to use McGough as a hitter with the bases loaded. He took a called third strike from Caleb Ferguson, who got his first save this season.

"It was a fun, exciting way to end the road trip," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.

Holmes allowed three unearned runs over 1 1/3 innings as New York won for the second time in the three-game series against the defending NL champion.

Arizona tied the score in the 10th after Volpe's throw to first was wide for an error on Geraldo Perdomo's grounder, allowing Barrosa to score. Pinch runner Jake McCarthy moved up on a wild pitch and scored when speedy Corbin Carroll beat Volpe's throw for a two-out infield single.

"There's a lot to unpack here, but the bottom line is we didn't win the game," Lovullo said. "We need to play better inside the game to win games like this."

Rookie Blaze Alexander hit his first major league homer in the second on a 96 mph fastball from Carlos Rodón, who gave up two runs, seven hits and three walks over 5 1/3 innings.

Ketel Marte tied the score 2-all in the fifth with a two-out, solo homer. Marte led off the first with a double for his 1,000th hit.

Kelly gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Reese McGuire drove in a career-high five runs , Tyler O’Neill hit his third home run of the series and the Boston Red Sox finished off an opening 10-game trip with a 12-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.

Tanner Houck (2-0) allowed four hits in six shutout innings and struck out seven. The right-hander became the first Boston pitcher to go at least six innings with seven or more strikeouts in each of his first two outings of a season.

“He threw strikes, he moved the ball around and made pitches. He’s in a good spot right now,” manager Alex Cora said of Houck. “We needed him to go deeper than five and he did that. And then the offense hit pull-side homers. It was a good day overall and a great road trip.”

David Hamilton and Rafael Devers also homered for Boston, which went 7-3 on the trip and opens at home on Tuesday against Baltimore.

Angels slugger Mike Trout averted a shutout in the eighth inning with his fourth homer of the season , a solo shot to left.

McGuire had a three-run homer in the sixth that extended Boston’s lead to 7-0. He also drove in runs with a grounder in the eighth and base hit in the ninth.

O’Neill, acquired in an offseason trade with St. Louis, tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Mookie Betts for the major league lead in homers with five. O’Neill also became the first player to have at least five home runs and five walks in their first nine games with the Red Sox.

After going deep twice in Friday’s 8-6 victory, O’Neill put a sinker from Chase Silseth (0-1) over the wall in left-center for a solo shot to make it 3-0 in the third inning. It was the second time in three days the Red Sox hit three home runs in an inning.

Hamilton, called up on Saturday after Trevor Story was placed on the 10-day injured list with a dislocated left shoulder, opened the scoring in the third when he drove Silseth’s high fastball off the out-of-town scoreboard above the fence in right-center for his first big-league homer .

With it bouncing back onto the field, the ball was in the dugout by the time Hamilton crossed the plate.

“Definitely not trying to do that, but ran into one and it got out,” Hamilton said. “First one. Can’t put that into words.”

Two batters later, Devers drove a splitter over the shrubs in center field.

Silseth allowed three runs and three hits in five innings with seven strikeouts.

Angels manager Ron Washington was pleased Silseth was able to rebound after the tough third inning.

“He salvaged a good outing. When he left the game we were still it. We just couldn’t shut him down and we couldn’t score any runs,” Washington said.

The Red Sox sent 10 the plate during their four-run ninth. Ceddanne Rafaela had the key hit with a two-run, bases-loaded single.

Red Sox: RHP Brayan Bello (1-0, 5.40 ERA) will start Tuesday.

Angels: Lefty Tyler Anderson (1-0, 0.00 ERA) gets the assignment for Monday’s series opener against Tampa Bay.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone has a rule for new outfielder Alex Verdugo: One chain per game

H OUSTON (AP) — During his time with the Boston Red Sox, Alex Verdugo frequently played with several gaudy chains bouncing around his neck. He packs at least six for every road trip, and he's lost count of how many he owns.

In his first season with the famously clean-cut New York Yankees, Verdugo has been given an order by manager Aaron Boone: only one chain per game.

“It’s kind of been hard, man,” Verdugo said. “Because usually I'm used to wearing like three of four.”

Verdugo looks like a new man with New York, stripped of all but one diamond-studded necklace so far this season and also missing his signature ginger beard. The Yankees have a strict appearance policy put in place by owner George Steinbrenner in 1976 that, among other things, limits hair length and bans facial hair besides mustaches. The policy has been criticized in recent years, including by former players Andrew McCutchen and Cameron Maybin , for limiting the ways players can express themselves.

After being traded from Boston to New York in December, Verdugo is playing ball with the policy. He wore the same necklace for each game in New York's season-opening series against the Houston Astros. The chain is modest by his standards, with square-shaped, diamond-covered pieces that cost him about $15,000.

Before leaving the ballpark following one of those games in Houston, he layered several other chains over the one he’d worn on the field. The largest was a thick and wide diamond-encrusted Cuban link with a huge No. 24 pendant, also covered in diamonds, hanging off it.

This one, he says, he’d never wear with the pendant in a game for fear of “knocking myself in the face.”

“So, I wear this big one just like outside, getting to the field for more style and then take it off because it’s way too big,” he said.

He does plan to wear the chain without the pendant as his one-game chain at some point this season.

The No. 24 pendant is new for this season, replacing the No. 99 that adorned the chain last season when he played for Boston. Now that 99 is no longer his number because it’s worn by Yankees captain Aaron Judge, he’s trying to figure out what to do with the old pendant.

“Judgey wants my 99. I said we’ll see about it, got to see how this year goes,” Verdugo said with a laugh.

Hearing Verdugo’s comment, Judge turned around with a big smile and said: “I’ve got to earn it.”

Verdugo says he can’t keep up with how many chains he has because he’s always “re-upping” every time he visits Happy Jewelers, which is in California near Angel Stadium. Arizona’s Joc Pederson introduced him to the jeweler when the two played together for the Dodgers.

Though Verdugo loves his Cuban link with the number pendant, it’s not No. 1 on his list. That honor belongs to a chain that has a very special meaning related to his mother, Shelly.

“My favorite chain is actually a custom one that I got built for my mom who was going through breast cancer,” he said. “I did breast cancer ribbons with hearts connecting all of them. So that’s actually my favorite chain. But I don’t wear it a lot because I don’t want to break it.”

Verdugo said last year was very difficult for him because he lost a grandmother to breast cancer just before his mother was diagnosed with it.

“So, I kind of went through the works a little bit last year,” he said. “I was all over. My mom’s like one of the strongest women ever. So, she helped me out through a lot."

His mother is doing much better now, and Verdugo has promised her a special present.

“She’s cancer free, but she’s still doing treatment for it,” he said. “But I told her when she finishes everything, that chain is hers.”

Wilderness Canoe Trip: Surviving a Grizzly Attack

preparing to fly canoes into Canada

Alex grew up in a canoe—first with his family, and then at Camp Menogyn in northern Minnesota. He and his fellow Menogyn campers had all paddled many trips over the years, working their way up to this one: the longest and most challenging the camp offers.

An Epic Wilderness Canoe Trip

Alex, his paddle mates and their guide, an experienced wilderness canoeist with Menogyn, headed out.

canoeist group

To reach their starting point, they first drove to northern Manitoba, then took a bush plane with all their gear into the Northwest Territories. Launching on the Dubawnt River, they paddled north and east into Dubawnt Lake in Nunavut.

A 4-mile portage took them into the Kunwak River system, then the Kazan. Their final destination was Baker Lake.

map of route

Alex describes it as “an epic river trip with touring-style whitewater.”

Grizzly Encounter

29 days into the trip, Alex left camp that afternoon and went out on a solo hike. The terrain was treeless subarctic tundra, rocky and barren. He had scaled a steep vertical climb when he encountered a grizzly bear, just 30 feet away.

Their guide had carefully instructed them what to do in case of a grizzly encounter: Don’t run. Back away slowly. Try to convince it you’re not a threat. All of that was running through his head the instant he saw it. Unfortunately, the bear charged.

Alex recalls:

“Terror turned into an overwhelming sense of loss. I was certain my life was about to end. I was so sad about that. I wasn’t ready to die.” (source) “I was really lucky. My injuries were not as bad as they could’ve been, by far. The bear bit me at the top of my leg, so I had puncture wounds there and in my thigh. But they missed my vital blood vessels.”

Their guide was a trained Wilderness First Responder (WFR), as all the camp’s guides are. He was able to bind up and stabilize Alex’s wounds. Needless to say, their trip shifted at that point. They had a satellite phone along, so they could connect with the camp to discuss Alex’s injuries and decide what to do next.

There wasn’t a helicopter available to pick him up, and since his injuries were stable they didn’t feel it required a high-risk emergency military-type rescue.

canoeing

The group, of course, had bear mace (spray) and bear poppers with them (noise makers) on the trip. Unfortunately, Alex didn’t have mace with him on this short hike when he encountered the grizzly.

“As Murphy’s Law would say, the time you don’t have it is when you need it!”

Back in the Wilderness

“Canoeing's a huge part of my life. I love being out on the water and canoes are definitely my choice of how to be out there. Because of your connection with that place…your feeling of satisfaction when you get somewhere under your own power. The challenges you can overcome in a canoe are humbling, and really exciting and invigorating. “After my bear attack, getting back out there—into the wilderness, especially—was challenging. I had to overcome a lot of fears just to be out there in a place where you're not completely in control. I have a heightened startle response. When I’m walking through the woods and hear a grouse jump out or a pine marten, it’s always much bigger and scarier in that first instant.”

But Alex made sure to continue getting out there with his family. It was important to him for his long-term healing.

canoeing a northern river

After a few years he was able to get back to Camp Menogyn and work as a guide himself. He eventually extended that into joining his local search and rescue squad. His experiences helping other people have been extremely rewarding for him.

“One of the things about bear encounters is that you learn a lot from it. There’s a lot you can do to prevent it from happening. There are some situations that are just out of your control, but there’s a lot you can do to stack the odds in your favor.”

He recommends taking bear mace everywhere with you—ready at hand—whenever you're in bear territory. Not just on a hike, but when you’re at your campsite, when you use the latrine…everywhere.

“The Twenty-Ninth Day”

Alex has written about his encounter with the grizzly in his forthcoming book, The Twenty-Ninth Day: Surviving a Grizzly Attack in the Canadian Tundra . Blackstone Publishing will release the book on November 12. It’ll be available on Amazon .

“I have no regrets for having gone on that trip, or any of the other trips I’ve gone on. I feel like I’ve learned some of my best lessons when traveling out in the wilderness and in other countries. A lot of those challenges are very real challenges, but they become the crucible that helps form who you are.” ( source )

What is Alex’s connection with Bending Branches? “I grew up on Bending Branches paddles—my first bent-shaft was a BB Special. My family still uses them today.”

Excellent pod - always engaging and love alex.

Have been a long time listener of Alex’s other film podcast, Clash of the Titles (also an outstanding listen), so decided to give this a try as a true “Zane-iac.” Absolutely love the show - it has a great mix of guests, well-curated format, and you can always count on Alex to bring the laughs. In particular, it’s fascinating to hear directly from filmmakers and respected film journalists which movies (and movie scenes) shaped their love of cinema. Thank you, Alex, for another fantastic pod - very pleased to add this to my stable of exceptional shows.
I just listened to the Sam Heughan episode and it was brilliant. SO unique and engaging. It was so wonderful to hear them banter about movies with this fun framework of a plane with a theater and Sam as the host (sign me the f up). Really, really enjoyed it especially being the same age as them and 100% getting the details of the movie references and how it relates to our childhoods. Only point of argument is Last Crusade being the best Indy movie. It’s a major favorite of mine but between that and Raiders… I think Raiders might win our overall, but the fun and sense of adventure in Last Crusade is unparalleled. Anyway, love hearing an actual fan of movies host a podcast and have another actual fan as a guest. Five stars all the way.

What a fun podcast!

Scrolling through Twitter, I found Alex Zanes podcast. He was interviewing one of my favorite actors, Sam Heughan. Instead of the usual interview questions, the premise is, Alex is going on a trip to the movies with his guest. The guest determines the details about the adventure. Alex asks questions like who they will be attending with, what posters are on the wall, what movie they’re seeing, what snack they’re having, etc, and in between, the guest talks about their memories about movies and life in general. It is thoroughly entertaining! You learn lots of silly and fun things about the guest that you might not have known.

Terrible trip says Detroit Red Wings probably aren't ready for Stanley Cup playoffs

trip alex

Someday, the Detroit Red Wings will make the playoffs again. And someday, when the Wings do get there, they will make some noise and win a series.

But if we learned anything from their tough five-game trip that bordered on disastrous, it’s that the Wings still lack enough of the elite skill and toughness to sneak into the playoffs for the first time since 2016 — and then beat a top seed once they get there.

At the very least, they’re getting closer to being a legitimate playoff team. They’re playing consistent, disciplined hockey under Derek Lalonde. They’re careful with the puck at both ends, calculated on offense and boast a top-10 power play.

But a measly four points out of a possible 10 , with two losses coming via shutout, isn’t the kind of inspiring late-season charge anyone wants to see from a team on the playoff bubble.

It wasn’t all bad. The Wings at least closed the trip strong with a 4-2 win over the red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday. That gave them 82 points with seven games remaining and left them just outside the second wild-card spot behind the Washington Capitals, based on points percentage.

“Our guys have been battling,” Lalonde told reporters in Tampa. “This is an unbelievably difficult road trip. You’re talking at Carolina, you're talking at Florida, at Tampa.

“Pointed in three of our last four on the road. We haven’t been finding a way to get two full points on the road but our guys are battling and tonight was perfect. Just really proud of the group.”

Lalonde is a smart coach. He knows what to say and how to prepare his team. But he also knows a .400 points percentage is awful, especially at this time of year. And I’m sure he was wise enough to thoroughly prepare the Wings for the Lightning’s top-ranked power play — then probably had to keep himself from biting through the closest hockey stick when the Wings took two first-period penalties, though they killed both.

Can the Wings still make the playoffs? Sure they can. The final wild-card spot in the East will probably come down to a battle royale between them, the Flyers and Caps. The Flyers and Caps play each other in the season finale at Philadelphia, so one might knock out the other.

The Wings get to finish with two games against miserable Montreal. So they might have a slight advantage in the schedule, though the Flyers have the easiest schedule over their final six games.

That means we might be looking at a hugely decisive game against the Caps on Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena. The Caps would have just four games left after that and the Wings would have five left.

I’ve applauded general manager Steve Yzerman for keeping the team intact at the trade deadline this season. Because that’s the first step in him considering the Wings a playoff team instead of an annual yard sale for the NHL’s power brokers to pick through like rich neighbors offering you pennies for those pricey P90X videos you never opened.

Yzerman’s inaction is a start, but it still falls short of the next and most important step: Adding key pieces that help a team not only reach the playoffs but also win series.

[ MUST LISTEN: Make "Carlos and Shawn" your go-to Detroit sports podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts ( Apple , Spotify ) ]

I don’t know how Yzerman truly views this roster’s potential for playoff success. It’s clear there’s talent and he deserves credit for adding Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat and Alex Lyon to complement core players.

But the 3-2 shootout loss to the Panthers, who are vying for the Presidents Trophy, told us — and maybe Yzerman — a lot about the Wings.

The Panthers got lucky on their two regulation goals. But they played a generally poor game, taking eight penalties, including one in overtime, and still beat the Wings by playing the kind of brutish, bullying hockey that would make the Hanson brothers proud. And when they needed the kind of stick-handling wizardry that would have made Pavel Datsyuk proud, they got it in the shootout.

I don’t expect the Wings to be the Panthers at this point. But if the Wings want to make the playoffs someday, and do something when they get there, they’re going to need exactly what the Panthers have: hands of stone in the corners and nimble fingers around the net.
