Skyrim: all pros & cons of joining the college of winterhold.

Skyrim's College of Winterhold questline can be completed with disappointingly little magic. However, the mages who teach there offer unique spells.

Every guild in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers some advantage to joining: The Companions turn the Dragonborn into a werewolf, the Thieves Guild can fence stolen goods, and the  Dark Brotherhood keeps a steady cash flow  via assassination missions. Skyrim’s  mages guild questline has players join the College of Winterhold, but many are hesitant to do so.

From its vast exploration to its random side quests and its pick-and-choose RPG elements, Skyrim is a self-crafted experience. While this freedom is one of the best things about the game, it does make some questlines awkward. In that regard, the College of Winterhold is one of the biggest offenders. Any character build can embark upon and complete the College of Winterhold questline and become the Arch-Mage, as barely any magic is required.

That’s not to say  The Elder Scrolls 6  should return to Oblivion’s  more restrictive class system. Being the head of the Companions, the Dark Brotherhood, the Thieves Guild, and the College all at once might seem overpowered and silly, but that’s not the biggest issue; it’s more that, other than a set of fluffy robes and new quarters, being Arch-Mage doesn’t grant any new spells or arcane proficiency. The gear picked up along the journey to the title is negligible, too. There are some advantages to joining, but they don't require completing the guild's quest.

Magic Is Bought, Not Learned At Skyrim's College Of Winterhold

Central Questline

All of the magic-learning necessary in the College of Winterhold questline is completed within its first 10 minutes. Being admitted into the College requires the player to cast only a single spell (Firebolt, Helping Hand, Summon Flame Atronach, or Fear), but a Dragon Shout also works. The player then gets a tour of the facilities, some free beginner robes, and a lesson in how to use Wards. From that point forward (excluding one scripted use of a Destruction spell), the whole questline can be completed with an axe or a bow.

Spell Vendors

After his Wards lesson, Tolfdir becomes the prime vendor for Skyrim’s Alteration spells , and most of the other College wizards simply specialize in selling spells of a different category. It’s not impossible to find spell tomes in other parts of Skyrim. Mage vendors like Farengar Secret-Fire in Whiterun or Calcelmo in Markarth offer a selection of magic to anyone, even if the Dragonborn is not enlisted at the College of Winterhold. That said, the College's exclusive specialist mages like Tolfdir and Faralda do sell any and all spells from their respective skill trees.

Ritual Spells

Once the player has a high enough level in the relevant skill, these specialists also offer a unique Ritual quest that rewards one of Skyrim’s  most powerful spells to their selection. These Ritual quests can only be initiated through the College's mages and are therefore the primary reason to join. However, all they require is for the player to have 90 levels in the related skill tree (and a lot of gold). Progress in the College of Winterhold questline has no bearing on their offers.

College Facilities

The College itself houses the standard magical crafting stations for Enchanting and Alchemy, but neither is exclusive to this location. These stations can be found all across Skyrim, even in player homes. One exception is the Atronach Forge in the Midden beneath the College. This exists only here and is a highly underrated crafting tool. Master Conjurers can use the forge to craft Daedric gear without any Smithing skills. Access to the Midden is not impacted by progress in the Winterhold questline, either, though.

The College of Winterhold is a strange Skyrim guild. Its upgraded spells cost money rather than requiring skill, and its questline can be completed just as easily with martial weapons as with arcane fire or lightning. All in all, it’s a useful pitstop on the Dragonborn’s journey, but there’s little incentive to stick around for its lackluster story.

Winterhold quests, how to become thane of winterhold.

Winterhold would be a much, much more interesting place had it not been destroyed in a magical accident. The once-thriving city has been reduced to an icy crater, a handful of surviving buildings, and the College of Winterhold. It remains the best place to learn and research magic in Skyrim despite its ruined state.

As its few remaining residents acknowledge, you would only be visiting the city for the College. Without anything else of value, Winterhold is slowly withering away amidst the snow of the north as its population leave for better opportunities in less destroyed places elsewhere in the province.

The city itself does not have any interesting quests. There are a handful of short, simple quests to complete for the residents that are not much more than fetch quests. You might find it a useful way of earning money , though they do not offer any unique rewards.

Outside of going to Winterhold to enroll in the college, you will be going there to learn more about Elder Scrolls for the quest Elder Knowledge .

The College Of Winterhold

Any player trying to build a magic-based Dragonborn will want to visit the College. It consolidates almost all the best trainers and stores for magic in one place while giving you access to some of the most powerful magic items in Skyrim.

You can join the College by walking to the bridge and passing a test set by Faralda, a staff member.

Like many of Skyrim's smaller cities, you start your path to Thaneship by helping the Jarl with a personal problem. In this case, you will help them find a missing helmet from a randomly selected dungeon.

You will only have to approach the Jarl and offer your help to start the quest.

After you complete this step, you will need to help three residents before you are awarded the title. You will be given the Blade of Winterhold as an additional reward.

Unfortunately, you will not be allowed to purchase property, and you will not be given a housecarl due to a lack of both things within the hold.

Winterhold relies on the College for business. Visitors often stay at the inn while a general goods store supplies both the College and the city with their basic needs. Former staff can even be found within the city, plying their trade away from the College's restrictions.

Description

The College of Winterhold is located atop of a tall ice formation that is not connected to the city of Winterhold . The only way to reach the school is an ancient bridge that connects from the mainland, on the western end of town. The College is centered around a square with a pool of Magicka streaming out into a pillar and large statue of a young Shalidor. The main hall is called the Hall of the Elements , where many students practice their skills whether it is a Fireball spell or a Lesser Ward spell. Above the Hall is The Arcanaeum , a vast collection of books that date back to the Merethic Era and have information on the mystical Elder Scrolls . The Hall of Countenance and the Hall of Attainment are where the students and teachers live respectively. Underneath the College is the Midden , a dungeon where many members go to perform experiments. [1]

Papers kept in the College's library reportedly date back to the late Second Era . [2] Serana in the Dawnguard add-on corroborates this date, recalling that the College existed when she was entombed between the Reman and Septim empires. [3] [UL 1] Additionally, documents from as early as 2E 373 suggest academic collaboration between the Reman Empire and the College. [4] However, Mirabelle Ervine states in her tour of the grounds that the College has been a "fixture" of Skyrim for thousands of years, [5] its inception being credited to Arch-Mage Shalidor in the First Era . [6]

During the Oblivion Crisis in 3E 433 , the city of Winterhold was flourishing with a new renaissance of power and wealth. Several refugees from Morrowind travel to Winterhold and bring their culture into the city as well as their old mercantile spirit. Scholars from all over Tamriel went to the College of Winterhold to bring books since the Ysmir Collective was established in the College. It became the academic cornerstone in Northern Tamriel. [7]

In 4E 122 , much of the city of Winterhold collapsed into the sea in an event known as The Great Collapse , although the College of Winterhold was left unharmed by the cataclysm. [8] This prompted suspicion among many citizens of Winterhold, who believed that the institution may have had a hand in the collapse. Although the College denied any involvement in the event, suggesting that the College was unharmed because of "protective magicks" placed around it many years previously, [9] the populace of Winterhold continued to harbor great distrust for the mages at the College. [10]

During the Dragon Crisis in 4E 201 , the Arch-Mage of the College was Savos Aren , and the Master Wizard was Mirabelle Ervine . Members of the College led by Tolfdir traveled to the ancient city of Saarthal to study the Atmoran architecture. Deep within Saarthal was a device called the Eye of Magnus , it had the ability to disperse large quantities of Magicka and was considered very powerful and dangerous. To quell the dangers it poses, an aspiring student of the College traveled to the vast ruins of the Labyrinthian to find the Staff of Magnus after an adventure in Mzulft . Ancano , an agent of the Thalmor was tampering with the Eye of Magnus and caused a magical explosion on the campus, including the ruined city of Winterhold. After dealing with the threat in the city, the student used the Staff of Magnus and weakened Ancano. They eventually defeated him and saved the college. That student was then promoted to the rank of Arch-Mage and Tolfdir was made the new Master Wizard of Winterhold. [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]

32 Questions to Ask on a College Visit

Students should feel free to ask questions during an information session or on tour.

Prospective students should conduct at least basic research to facilitate questions to ask during the information session or on tour, experts say.

Key Takeaways

  • Before a campus visit, students should do basic research on the school.
  • Students and their families have various opportunities to ask questions.
  • No question is dumb.

College visits, whether in person or virtual, can help give prospective students a better feel of campus life.

Contrary to popular belief, however, students don’t need to have that “a-ha” moment when they eventually find the campus where they belong, says Thyra Briggs, vice president for admission and financial aid at Harvey Mudd College in California.

“I just don't think that happens for most students,” she says. “I don't want students to walk away from a visit where that didn't happen thinking, ‘Oh, this is not the place for me.’ This is a long-term relationship. It's not necessarily love at first sight. … In this age of instant gratification, I think it's an important thing to give a school a chance to affect you in a different way.”

For an in-person visit, families should prepare ahead of time by checking the weather and dressing comfortably as tours are mostly held outside.

"Leave plenty of time at an individual campus and allow yourself to enjoy the experience, be present in the moment and (don't) feel rushed because that could also skew your perception of things," says Bryan Gross, vice president for enrollment management at Hartwick College in New York.

It’s also important, experts say, to conduct at least basic research on the institution – even if it’s just looking at their social media accounts – to help facilitate questions to ask during the information session or on tour.

"We know that for some of you, this may be the first time you are going through this," Briggs says. "For others, it's a different student (going through the process) than the student you had who's older. So there’s no bad questions. ... I would hope that any college would welcome any question a student would ask.”

Here are 32 example questions, collected from college admissions and enrollment professions, that students don't always think to ask on college visits. These questions – edited for length or clarity – were provided by Briggs, Gross and Brian Lindeman, assistant vice president of admissions and financial aid at Macalester College  in Minnesota.

Questions About Admissions

  • Does this school consider demonstrated interest?
  • Is there an opportunity for prospective students to sit in on a class to experience a real lecture?

  • If available, are these global programs directly run by this school – where faculty members travel with students – or are these study abroad programs outsourced to a third-party company?
  • Are these study abroad experiences built into the tuition or are there additional fees to participate?

Questions About Financial Aid

  • What is this school's average financial aid package?
  • What is the average net cost when students enroll?
  • What is the current level of funding with endowed scholarships – how much are donors contributing to scholarships?
  • Do you offer merit aid ? If so, what are you looking for in a candidate?

Questions About Campus Housing and Community

  • What are the housing options?
  • What are the fee structures for these different options?
  • Are students required to live on campus ?
  • How does your campus define diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging?

Questions to Ask Your Tour Guide to Gauge Campus Life

  • What surprised you about this school? What's something you didn't expect?
  • What keeps you coming back to this school each year?
  • Have we seen your favorite place on campus?
  • What event on campus gets the biggest turnout every year?
  • If you were struggling with an issue, would you know who to turn to? Who would that be?

Questions About Work and Research Opportunities

  • What are the opportunities for undergraduate research on campus?
  • How do those research opportunities give students valuable hands-on experiences that enhance their resumes?
  • What are some specific ways this school helps students gain hands-on experience through internships ?

Questions About Student and Career Outcomes

  • What is the retention rate from freshman to sophomore year?
  • What is the five-year graduation rate?
  • What is the job-attainment rate of graduates within six months of graduating?
  • What percent of students are going on to graduate school ?

College protesters are demanding schools 'divest' from companies with ties to Israel. Here's what that means.

In addition to a cease-fire in Gaza, protesters on college campuses across the country are calling on their schools to divest from all financial support of Israel.

Divestment usually refers to selling shares in companies doing business with a given country. Divestment has long been a goal of a movement that seeks to limit what it considers hostile operations by Israel and an end to expanding what the United Nations has ruled are illegal settlements.

Now, college protesters are hoping to force their universities to divest to put financial pressure on companies doing business in Israel to meet those two objectives.

“The university should do something about what we’re asking for, about the genocide that’s happening in Gaza,” said Columbia University student and protest leader Mahmoud Khalil, who is Palestinian, and noted that students have been pushing for Columbia to divest from Israel since 2002. “They should stop investing in this genocide.”

Israel launched its Gaza campaign soon after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas , a U.S.-designated terror group that left 1,200 Israelis dead, according to officials, with an estimated 250 people taken hostage. The subsequent military response by Israel has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Like many universities, Columbia owns shares of various companies as part of its financial operations and endowment. However, information on Columbia’s exact holdings was not immediately available, and it was not clear whether investment information published by Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD), the group leading the protests at the school, was accurate.

Whatever the case, while some of the shares Columbia owns may be directly held stock investments, other assets are likely held indirectly through investment instruments like mutual funds or exchange-traded funds that are designed to expose investors to a variety of firms.

And as students at Brown University acknowledged in a separate proposal targeting their school’s alleged Israel-tied investments, excluding specific investments from these indirect stock holding products “would be logistically challenging.”

In fact, they concluded that none of their school’s current direct investments appeared to be in individual companies violating its anti-Israel screening criteria.

Meanwhile, mutual fund and ETF holdings are constantly changing, the Brown students said.

The actual mechanics of divestment thus make it a more difficult undertaking than it may first appear, said Alison Taylor, clinical associate professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

“You get into questions of, ‘What percentage of a company’s business is actually tied to the activities in question?’” Taylor said.

Columbia’s Investment Management Company, which oversees the school’s market assets, does have an advisory committee on socially responsible investing.

This committee has pledged that it will screen against investing in firms that operate private prisons; derive significant revenues from thermal coal; and engage in tobacco manufacturing. It also has had a policy against investing in companies doing business in Sudan.

So there is precedent for Columbia to limit its financial exposure to socially irresponsible firms, CUAD says. At present, Columbia’s investment in the companies that CUAD accuses of having ties to Israel makes it “complicit in genocide,” CUAD says.

“By withdrawing from holdings that profit off of Israeli human rights violations, Columbia can invest in other, more worthwhile companies,” CUAD says in a December proposal submitted to the socially responsible investing committee calling for divestment.

NY: Pro Palestinian Protest at Columbia University.

A representative for Columbia’s responsible investment committee did not respond to a request for comment.

Columbia President Minouche Shafik has not specifically addressed the divestment calls in her statements on the campus turmoil. Her predecessor, Lee Bollinger, rejected calls for divestment in 2020, saying that a vote by students calling for one merely represented “particular views about a complex policy issue” and that there was “no consensus across the University community about” the issue.

Sylvia Burwell, the president of American University in Washington, D.C., said a student vote calling for divestment did not represent the school and would not be recognized.

“It is AU’s longstanding position to oppose boycotts, divestment from Israel, and other related actions known as BDS,” she said in a statement last week, referring to a Palestinian-led movement called Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions.

“Such actions threaten academic freedom, the respectful free expression of ideas and views, and the values of inclusion and belonging that are central to our community.”

There is debate about the efficacy of divestment. Some evidence suggests that the buyers of shares being sold off as part of a divestment campaign can sometimes turn out to be worse actors than their original holders, NYU’s Taylor said.

She gave the example of Myanmar, where energy giant Chevron ending up selling off an asset to an entity that human rights groups said was even less accountable.

Divestment supporters often cite the successful campaign to dismantle South Africa’s apartheid regime as an example of what can be accomplished.

But Taylor and others have said the groundswell of international and civil-society support that was needed to end apartheid has not materialized in the Israel-Palestine conflict.

“It required everyone to be at the table,” she said. “South Africa is a  good story, but I don’t know whether we’re there yet.”

In a 2021 study of the impact of divestment, business school professors at the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University found the practice had little impact.

Instead, they said, activists seeking to change a company’s behavior should instead hold on to their investments and exercise any rights of control they may have to change corporate policy.

The Anti-Defamation League, a nonprofit that seeks to counter antisemitism, likewise concluded that shareholder resolutions have proven effective at changing corporate behavior, even as it criticized such efforts as “simplistic” and not constructive.

“Organizations file resolutions repeatedly until they get the change they want, often garnering more votes each year,” the ADL said in a 2022 article on its website . “Even if a proposal fails, sometimes just the fact that it is filed may be enough to make a company wary of doing business with Israel.”

Skyrim:College of Winterhold (faction)

when should i visit the college of winterhold

The College of Winterhold is a faction that you have the option of joining. It is Skyrim's equivalent of the Mages Guild from earlier Elder Scrolls games. The College is the only place in Skyrim dedicated to education and practice in the magical arts.

The secretive nature of the College mages and the Nords' natural distrust of Magic have contributed to widespread distrust of the College and its members. The destruction of most of Winterhold in 4E 122 only worsened the situation, though no actual evidence exists to suggest the College's involvement. The College's leader, Arch-Mage Savos Aren , seems to be aware of the College's reputation, but doesn't seem too eager to do anything about it.

The College of Winterhold [ edit ]

when should i visit the college of winterhold

The threadbare Hold City of Winterhold has seen most of its population driven away. The center of life in these parts nowadays is the College of Winterhold. Once a prominent, influential location in Skyrim, Winterhold has fallen on hard times, but is still a haven for mages in Skyrim, a safe refuge from distrustful Nords. Largely self-sufficient, the College of Winterhold is quite content to be isolated from the rest of the province, although a more peaceful coexistence with the outside world is always preferred.

The College of Winterhold is situated on a cliff overlooking the Sea of Ghosts . Several years ago, much of the cliff fell into the sea, taking nearly all of the original city with it. Only a few buildings remain, though somehow the College of Winterhold has largely been untouched by the damage. It now resides on a free-standing pillar of rock and ice. Inside, the College is split into three distinctive towers: Halls of Countenance and Attainment , where apprentices and senior mages reside; and the Hall of the Elements , where the Arch-Mage resides, gatherings are held, and The Arcanaeum (the College's great library) is kept. Below the College lies The Midden , a warren of icy tunnels where the remnants of long-forgotten experiments reside.

Hundreds of protesters snaked through Manhattan Tuesday in a rowdy demonstration that hit every ritzy university that has erected encampments in the past two weeks — with rally leaders threatening that administrators “should be” scared of their students.

The “Flood the Encampments for Gaza” march started at New York University, where some clueless students admitted last week  they had no idea what they were rallying over , before moving on to The New School, FIT, Columbia University and City College.

“We have made it clear to the institution what the only appropriate resolution is. And we will not de-escalate, we will not decamp and we will not rest until this university — which has blood on its hands — cuts every last tie with a Zionist institution, to the Zionist entity,” one protester shouted outside the John A. Paulson Center, the university’s fitness center and classroom space named after a Jewish alumnus.

She claimed that the administration was attempting to “strong arm” the protesters into “leaving the encampment before [their] demands are met.”

The threats of disciplinary action, she continued, are considered the “highest honor” for protesters.

The group also blasted Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “war criminal” and called for canceling “Zionist universities.”

Many of the roughly 150 protesters wore keffiyehs, a Middle Eastern headdress, to cover their faces as they waved Palestinian flags and signs calling for the nation to be freed from Israeli rule.

Sometime during the protest, vandals splattered a blood-like substance on the home of NYU President Linda Mills, whose failure to tackle on-campus antisemitism in the weeks after Hamas launched its Oct. 7 attack caused several Israeli alumni to cut ties with the prestigious institution.

The gory mess was delivered by “external community members in solidarity with NYU students,” independent journalist Talia Jane reported , and was accompanied by a note: “Linda Mills: Your administration is complicit in genocide. Blood on your hands. Long live Gaza.”

The crowd swelled to roughly 400 protesters by the time it made its way to the Fashion Institute of Technology, with many waving giant Palestinian flags and running through the streets while chanting, “Shut it down!”

Some ralliers even jumped on top of a parked pick-up truck to dance along to the crowd’s shouts.

Campus police had intervened at the protests earlier this week, stopping a food delivery from reaching protests before ripping down encampment equipment like tents.

Richard Dickinson, 79, a French professor from Sarah Lawrence College walking through the scene called the student activists the “conscience of America.”

“I’m here to support them because I believe in what they’re doing,” he said as he sported a pro-Palestine pin.

“This is the most important thing I have seen in my life. I have never seen anything as ugly as what Israel is doing in Gaza. And if we don’t stop it, then it’s our sin,” Dickinson continued.

A number of protesters were arrested near the City College of New York in West Harlem on Tuesday night.

Rather than march the 4.5 miles to Columbia University, the protesters opted to move their parade underground — swarming Penn Station and disrupting hundreds of straphangers on the rush hour commute.

The protesters squished in with regular New Yorkers aboard the uptown A train, chanting: “Uptown A train you will see. Palestine is almost free!”

They terrorized the train for four stops before riling off at the 125th Street station and bolting toward the Ivy League, which kicked off the nationwide encampment trend when it first erected its mini-city April 17.

The crowd rallied outside Hamilton Hall in support of the dozens of protesters who bolted themselves inside the day before — with some protesters carrying Palestinian flags and waltzing on the roof of the academic building.

“Yesterday we continued the revolutionary legacy of the anti-imperialist students that came before us. Students who refused to pay for death, destruction and genocide,” a student told the crowd, alleging that the university is denying protesters food, water and bathroom access.

“We are reclaiming our right to this campus. We are liberating territory.”

The crowd — which officials said is comprised of  agitators not affiliated with the school  — took over the building in the middle of the night Tuesday, hours after administrators ordered students to vacate their tents.

The aggressive protesters smashed windows and dangled signs around the building, which they’ve dubbed “Hind’s Hall” in honor of Hind Rajab, a 6-year-old Palestinian girl who was killed during the Middle Eastern conflict.

“Our necessary escalation last night was in response to the repression and violence from our administration. We were victorious,” the protester continued.

Columbia University failed to rein in the disruptive protests Monday, even after instituting a deadline for the crowds to vacate their mini-tent city on the campus lawn.

The Ivy League has since announced it would hand out suspensions to any students still defying the orders — which would prevent some from graduating next month — which the crowd considered as a “siege.”

“They have locked us in on this campus, they have locked the campus down, they have threatened us with suspension, they prevent us from using the bathroom, they prevent us from getting food, they prevent us from receiving water,” a demonstrator shouted to the crowd.

“This is a siege. They want to starve us to keep us from staying and holding our ground.”

“The administration is scared of the students and frankly, they should be.”

The parade moved on to its final destination at City College just as hundreds of NYPD officers in riot gear and carrying zip-tie handcuffs began to mobilize in front of Hamilton Hall Tuesday evening — eventually storming into the building and arresting dozens .

The rally at the CUNY school turned out to be the most violent of all the university stops. Chaos erupted when the anti-Israel protesters tried to bust through a barricade blocking them from reaching the “intifada” encampment that popped up Friday

Protesters and cops exchanged hard shoves, while other ralliers hurled garbage at the officers, dramatic  video of the fight shows.

One man was even seen bashing a cop with a 5-gallon water jug with a sticker that read “Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.”

Organizers had warned hours ahead of the clashes that attempts to shut down the demonstration would be “met with anger.”

City College administrators had seemingly anticipated the escalation — just hours before the march was slated to arrive, the school shut down campus buildings to everyone except “essential personnel.”

“For obvious reasons I cannot tell you how long these restrictions will be in effect. We will reassess regularly,” the internal letter from City Colleges of New York Provost Tony Liss, obtained by The Post, stated.

The public school — which was on spring break until Tuesday — also announced all classes and college functions would be held remotely until further notice starting May 1.
