2018 Performance at the Midwest International Clinic

Whitney Young has one of the best orchestra programs in the City of Chicago.  If you play a string instrument, and you're shopping around for a selective enrollment high school, you can't do much better than the orchestras at Whitney Young!

Whether you've never played an instrument before, or you've been taking lessons for years and have been featured on From the Top , there's a place for you in the Orchestras at Whitney Young.  Participating in an orchestra here is about two things: 1) Reaching the highest possible level of skill, technique and musicianship, and 2) sharing the experience with friends, old and new. The relationships created through musical performance will last a lifetime - one of the best ways to get plugged into the social fabric of WYMHS is to become a part of a performing arts ensemble.

Our Shared Values

Supportive community.

We hold deep, genuine concern about each other as our most precious and important shared value.  Our commitment to each other supersedes all other shared values.

Hard Work for Exceptional Performance

We believe that working hard to create an inspiring musical performance is a meaningful and worthwhile endeavor.

Dedication to Diverse Voices

Through creative programming, meaningful engagement, and performance, we strive to elevate all voices and learn about what they have to say.

Respect for Our Musical Heritage

Through creative programming, meaningful engagement, and performance, we explore the rich, history upon which our orchestral tradition is built.

Commitment to Curiosity and Open Mindedness

We believe that hedonic value (how much we like something) is only one perspective by which the quality of music can be measured and commit ourselves to exploring many different contexts and perspectives in order to find an appreciation for all music.

For the first time in 27 years, a new principal has been selected to lead Chicago’s Whitney Young Magnet High School. The Local School Council awarded a contract Wednesday to Whitney Young Assistant Principal Rickey Harris.

“The students really like him. If I can use the word hip, he’s really hip,” outgoing Whitney Young Principal Joyce Kenner, 66, told the Tribune. “He’s still very, very professional. He’s smart. He’s articulate. The faculty and staff for the most part, I believe, respect him. He’s creative. And I hate to say this, but he’s younger. He’s younger, and he has the energy to attend the numerous events that I used to attend.”

Harris, who turns 50 this month, won the role over Kerry Dolan, assistant principal at Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy, a selective enrollment school in Roseland. Kenner, the Whitney Young principal since 1995, announced in April that she would be stepping down from the post. She said seven people applied for the chance to take the helm of the selective enrollment school .

Rickey Harris stands after being selected as the new principal during a Whitney Young High School Local School Council meeting Wednesday.

At the meeting, Kenner tearfully passed a baton to Harris, who called her the greatest of all time. He later told news reporters he felt elated to be selected by the LSC, which voted unanimously in his favor.

He said his main focus during the leadership transition is to “create a sense of belonging, to really make sure that everyone feels safe, not just physically safe, but psychologically safe, making sure that everyone has what they need to continue to be successful.”

The search for Kenner’s successor lasted much of the summer, with a virtual candidate forum taking place last week. Harris and Dolan answered questions about how they would maintain a school culture of inclusivity; attract more Black students to the school, where the student population is nearly 18% Black; and improve the diverse learners department, among other topics.

“I honestly felt like it was a transparent process — and it was as fair as it possibly could be, given that one of the candidates had been affiliated with Whitney Young for a large number of years,” Kenner said of the search. “When you know a building, to me, like this person knows it, it’s hard to discount that.”

Harris served as the dean of students at Whitney Young from 2006 to 2010 before returning two years ago to be an assistant principal, according to his online resume. He’s also worked as an administrator at University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, Wolcott College Prep, South Shore International College Prep High School, Dvorak School of Excellence and St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic School , his resume states.

Harris will be the fourth principal in the history of Whitney Young, considered one of the top high schools in the city. Last year about 2,100 students attended the Near West Side school, heralded as Chicago’s first magnet high school when it opened in 1975.

The announcement comes as Chicago Public Schools leaders move forward with a controversial plan to open a new high school on the Near South Side. The $120 million proposal includes $70 million once set aside for a new Near West Side high school. Kenner opposed that project at the time, expressing concern it would lead to a traffic nightmare for her school.

The group behind the Near West Side high school plan has shifted its focus to pushing for an open-enrollment neighborhood program at Whitney Young to serve students within a boundary designated by CPS.

Joyce Kenner looks out at attendees while being applauded shortly before Rickey Harris is selected as the new principal.

Meanwhile, the new CPS year is set to start Aug. 22 . Kenner, who received a standing ovation at Wednesday’s LSC meeting, said she may help greet people arriving at Whitney Young on the first day of school. She said her next assignment — besides spending time with her young grandchildren — is to write a book about her Whitney Young experience.

“Any major event that occurred, I would write it down and just put it in a folder over the last 22 years,” Kenner said. “And so I think I have hundreds of incidents that occurred that I’m going to write about. It’s going to be a leadership book.”

Jun Mhoon, music producer and adolescent drummer for The Staple Singers, dies at 69

As a sixth-grader, he toured with the gospel group and was ‘just as cute as he could be,’ says singer mavis staples. the experience paved the way for his success in the music industry..

Jun Mhoon

Long before he was a record producer, before he was even a teenager, Jun Mhoon was playing drums on tour with The Staple Singers, gazing in amazement at thousands of faces while warming up crowds for bands like The Doors, passing love notes from Bob Dylan, and asking “Who’s Bob Dylan?”

“Jun was a little kid and just as cute as he could be,” recalled singer Mavis Staples. “And he really became a member of our family, the baby of the family. We all loved him and looked after him.”

Mr Mhoon died April 13 from cardiac arrest. He was 69.

Mr. Mhoon (his name is pronounced like June Moon) was in the sixth grade when Mavis’ brother, Pervis Staples, a South Side neighbor of Mr. Mhoon, recruited him to join the family group and tour on weekends.

The cub performer didn’t understand the scale of the shows they were playing until the house lights unexpectedly came on one night and he saw thousands of faces, Mr. Mhoon recalled in an interview with the Illinois Rock & Roll Museum.

“It was incredible and I didn’t know it was incredible,” he said of the surreal childhood experience, noting that Bob Dylan used to hand him love notes to deliver to Mavis Staples.

“I didn’t know who Bob Dylan was,” he said.

Mavis Staples laughed at the memory.

“Bobby would write little notes, and here come Jun: ‘Mave, Mave, I got something for you.’ And it was another note from Bobby, yes indeed.”

Pervis and his father, family patriarch Pops Staples, kept an eye on their young charge, once rushing Mr. Mhoon away from a “whites only” drinking fountain in the Deep South that the youngster mistakenly sipped from.

Jun Mhoon (right) with Pops Staples

Jun Mhoon (right) with Pops Staples

Mr. Mhoon’s run with The Staple Singers ended when he began attending Harlan High School, but in his later teen years, he worked for Pops Staples as his valet and personal assistant.

Mr. Mhoon stayed by his boss’ side, even during negotiation sessions with record executives, and later worked as the band’s road manager.

In addition to playing with The Staple Singers, Mr. Mhoon was a teenage drummer on staff with Brunswick Records, where he kept time for the Chi-Lites, Jackie Wilson and other well-known musicians.

The experiences helped pave the way for a successful career as a record executive and producer.

In the 1970s he worked as marketing director for Warner Bros. before joining RCA Records in 1978 as the label’s Midwest regional director. While working in the music industry, he began attending Columbia College, where he founded AEMMP Records, the school’s student-run record label. He later became vice president of A&M Records, in Los Angeles.

Mr. Mhoon worked with artists ranging from Al Green to Janet Jackson and Barry White.

He also got early experience as a producer when Pops Staples tapped him to run a studio he opened.

“If you listen to the music he produced back in the ‘80s he was always ahead of the curve musically with sounds that were the precursor for artists like gospel singer Kirk Franklin,” said his ex-wife, Tajamahal Mhoon.

Mr. Mhoon was also an executive with Un-D-Nyable Records, a record label founded by Chicago White Sox big hitter Frank Thomas in the 1990s.

In 1987, Mr. Mhoon founded I AM Records, a label that specialized in gospel, spoken word, hip hop and jazz that later evolved into I AM Music Online.

In 2004 it was one of roughly 200 independent labels that signed deals to supply content to a nascent iTunes.

Mr. Mhoon provided iTunes with tracks from Pops Staples as well as gospeel singer James Cleveland, R&B dance music artist Jody Watley, and poet Nikki Giovanni.

Before inking the deal, Mr. Mhoon was invited, along with the heads of other independent labels, to Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, where he met Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

When Mr. Mhoon arrived he was met by a Korean interpreter who presumed he was an attorney working for Jun Mhoon.

“He kept asking me when was Jun Mhoon coming and I kept saying ‘I’m Jun Mhoon,’ ” he recalled in the Illinois Rock & Roll Museum interview.

Mr. Mhoon was African American but also had Asian and European roots.

Mr. Mhoon was born on June 10, 1954, in Chicago. He was the namesake son of Justina Williamson Poole and Wilbur Leon Mhoon Sr.

The name “Jun” came from the childhood mispronunciation of the name his father called him: “Junior.”

Mr. Mhoon’s love of music was cemented in 1965 when he saw a sharply dressed Ringo Starr beating the drums before an audience of screaming girls during a televised performance of the Fab Four on the ‘The Ed Sullivan Show.’

“I saw Ringo Starr and I saw all these girls screaming and hollering ... and I said ‘That’s what I’m going to do,’ ” he said in the Illinois Rock & Roll Museum interview. “So I took the coffee out of my parent’s coffee cans and dumped it on the floor and I put that rubber top back on and went and got some clothespins and I started playing like Ringo Starr.”

He wasn’t the only musical talent in the family.

Mr. Mhoon was extremely proud of his son, Josh Mhoon, a Whitney M. Young Magnet High School grad who’s attending the famed Juilliard School in New York to study piano.

Mr. Mhoon traveled the world with his son, who was hailed as a prodigy at a young age.

“He was a really great father and a coach,” Joshua Mhoon said. “He knew the amount of work and discipline it takes.”

“He could play music by ear, and I just remember dancing around as a kid while he played,” said his daughter Carson Mhoon.

In addition to Carson and Joshua, Mr. Mhoon is survived by his daughters Jordan Curry, Myriah Mhoon and Season Mhoon, as well as four grandchildren.

At the time of his death, Mr. Mhoon was engaged to be married to NBC 5 Chicago reporter LeeAnn Trotter.

Services are being planned.

ARREST WARRANT: Middle school teacher accused of inappropriately touching students

MANCHESTER, CT (WFSB) – A Manchester middle school teacher is accused of inappropriately touching students and making inappropriate comments, according to police.

Manchester police said 58-year-old Floyd Gray of Hartford was charged with three counts of breach of peace second-degree and three counts of risk of injury to a minor.

Floyd Gray.

The investigation began on Feb. 8, when police received complaints from three students at Illing Middle School.

The students reported that Gray touched them inappropriately and made inappropriate comments in class, said police. School officials said the students reported Gray touched and rubbed their shoulders in class.

“The students stated they were not in the same class but reported similar incidents with Gray,” Manchester police said.

An arrest warrant was secured for Gray. Read it below:

According to the warrant, the students ranged in age from 12 to 13 years old.

“Mr. Gray made comments about their appearance, calling their clothing ‘attractive’ and asked [a student] how her friends perceive her outfits.” Floyd Gray's arrest warrant

In one incident, Gray was on a laptop and pointed out a photo of one student to another. He told the student that he thought the student in the photo was attractive.

“The girls also mentioned... at the end of the day outside his classroom, he was putting his hands on the shoulders of another female student.” Floyd Gray's arrest warrant

Investigators noted in the warrant that last year, an 8th grade student made a report that Gray put his hands on her shoulders, rubbed them, and even touched her breasts and bra straps on multiple occasions. Detectives interviewed the student, but no one else saw the activity. An arrest was not made in that case.

When school administrators interviewed Gray about the cumulative reports from the students, the warrant stated that he verbally admitted to them.

School officials said Gray was placed on administrative leave at the time of the allegations. He remained on leave at last check.

Gray turned himself in on Tuesday.

He bonded out and appeared in court on Wednesday.

“This is a 58-year-old man who has taught at this middle school for 21 years. Who has three daughters,” said Patrick Tomasiewicz, defense attorney.

Tomasiewicz is Gray’s attorney. He spoke outside of Manchester court Wednesday.

“But he absolutely denies inappropriate contact with these young people,” Tomasiewicz said.

In court, the judge ordered Gray to not have any contact with the students.

Gray is due back in court on May 28.

Anyone with more information was asked to call the Manchester Police Department.

Investigations were conducted by the Manchester Police Department, the Manchester Public Schools Administration, and the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.
