Poole Harbour osprey breeding project finds fourth egg

A fourth osprey egg laid as part of a breeding project has surprised researchers.

Female bird CJ7 and male 022 are the only breeding pair of ospreys on England's south coast.

They are being monitored by the Poole Harbour Osprey Project and their first egg was laid on 15 April.

Researchers say female ospreys "typically" lay three eggs, so they were "taken by surprise" to find the fourth.

In a statement, Birds of Poole Harbour explained CJ7 had been laying eggs at three-day intervals and the latest was laid on Wednesday at 19:15 BST.

They said: "If all of the eggs hatch, there will then be the challenge of providing food for the four young.

"There is certainly enough fish available for them in Poole Harbour, but it will be extra work for 022, who will be doing all the hunting for the chicks and CJ7 until around July."

The project is expecting the eggs to hatch around 21 May, as incubation typically takes between 36 and 40 days and the hatching, like the laying, will be staggered.

This is the third time the pair have nested at a secluded site in Careys Secret Garden.

The statement continued: "Last year the pair did an exceptional job at caring for the three chicks they raised, so we have high hopes for success this season."

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

Fitness influencer Tammy Hembrow has revealed the gross thing people kept saying about her body.

Hembrow, 30, is a mum to three, one of Australia’s most successful influencers – with more 17 million followers on Instagram – and also owns the active wear line Saski. 

She’s made a name for herself by creating a successful business, but like the Kardashians are known for their curves, she’s always been known for her toned and fit physique.

She often posts selfies or videos of her working out and markets her fitness programs on the results she’s obtained herself.

Despite being a famous person universally known for having a great body, she still has to deal with people criticising it.

The influencer took to Instagram and posted a photo of herself wearing lingerie, but the caption revealed the kind of commentary people have made about her body.

“I used to get old all the time that strong isn’t sexy or feminine. A few years into my training it was a daily occurrence,” she wrote. 

Hembrow added that she “wholeheartedly” disagreed with that statement, and fans were quick to offer her support, calling her “stunning” and “goals.” 

Hembrow is familiar with public scrutiny. In December 2023, the young mum faced criticism simply for getting engaged to influencer Matt Zukowski, and the joyful news overwhelmingly triggered  judgment  instead of celebration.

“Never in my life have I felt so safe, so loved, so understood, so cared for. What a plot twist you were,” Hembrow wrote when announcing her engagement.

Hembrow, 29, has three children; she shares her two eldest kids with her ex, Reece Hawkins, and her youngest child, Posy, born in 2022 with her ex, Matt Poole. The fitness icon was engaged to both the men she shares children with, calling off her engagement with Poole in December 2022.

She was then inundated with people criticising her choice to get engaged because she already had three children with two other men.

The backlash was so severe that Hembrow addressed it in an interview with Stellar , in which she said that staying with her previous partners was not the “best option” for her or her children.

“When people say, ‘oh, you’re introducing your kids to another man’, I get where they’re coming from. But I’m not doing this lightly,” she explained. 

Hembrow pointed out that “blended families” can be amazing but that the old-fashioned belief that she should work things out for the sake of her kids was “not the best option”

Mom Says She Was Handed the Wrong Baby While at the Hospital: 'The Unthinkable Happened'

Poole Hospital in the UK said this week that it was investigating after an incident in which a new mother was handed the wrong baby

A new mom is sharing her story after she says the baby handed to her at a UK hospital was not her newborn daughter.

Maisie Beth, 22, shared that she only realized the baby was not her own when she went to change its diaper, and saw immediately that it was a boy.

Beth, who is from Poole in the UK, told her story on TikTok, which is captioned with the text: "My newborn baby was swapped at birth??? a true story time."

"Never in a million years did I think this was something I'd have to worry about, but yes, it did actually happen to us," Beth says in the video.

After she gave birth to daughter Isabella in September 2023, Beth and the child were separated while the baby was placed in a nursery down the hall for photo-therapy treatments.

On night two in the hospital, Beth says, "the unthinkable happened."

After waking up at 3 a.m., Beth went to the bathroom and was walking down the hall when the nurses asked her to come into the office, where they said they had Isabella.

"This did raise a few little red flags just because I was told she wasn't allowed out of her photo-therapy lamp," Beth says, adding that the midwives told her Isabella had been removed from the nursery because she was crying and wouldn't settle.

Beth then took the baby presented to her, and headed back to her hospital room.

"After a couple of hours, just before breakfast, I asked the nurses when Isabella needed to go back under her lamp," she says.

The nurses then asked her to change Isabella's diaper and get her dressed and ready — and she immediately realized the baby she had been cuddling for hours was not her own.

"When I tell you I nearly had a heart attack," Beth says, adding: "I picked up the baby and I stormed into the office. All I saw was red and I was demanding for them to tell me where Isabella was because this was not my baby."

The reasoning the hospital gave for the mixup, Beth says, is that she looked "identical" to the other child's mom.

While Poole Hospital hasn't referenced the TikTok video nor Beth's name, it did say this week that it was investigating after an incident in which a new mother was handed the wrong baby.

University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Poole Hospital, told BBC in a statement that the incident was "isolated."

"We deeply regret any distress that was caused and have reached out to the mother to offer her support," Lorraine Tonge, director of midwifery at University Hospitals Dorset, told the outlet. "We would urge her to get back in touch with us to assist us in our investigation."
