The COVID-19 pandemic has altered workplace dynamics, and we now witness the  “new normal”  of remote operations. In this article, I share strategies that L&D teams can use to design their Virtual Learning journey and deliver seamless training results.

While the percentage of remote learners may change over time, it will clearly be an integral component of the workplace in the future.

The high impact of the trainer-led classroom sessions is difficult to match when the entire audience is working remotely. L&D teams clearly need to have an effective strategy in place to design their Virtual Learning journey that delivers seamless training results.

What Are the Steps that L&D Teams Need to Follow to Design an Effective  Virtual Learning Journey That Delivers Seamless Training Results?

  • Synchronous connects or live sessions.
  • Asynchronous connects via online access to VILT recordings and supporting collateral (prep material and hand-outs).
  • ILT to the Self-paced or Fully Online mode.
  • ILT to an optimal Blended mode that offers VILT with a Self-paced or Fully Online mode.  This would again leverage VILT sessions in synchronous/asynchronous modes.
  • L&D teams must factor for tips and strategies  that will create high engagement for the remote learners in each mode.
  • The effectiveness of the training in the new mode.
  • The training impact.
  • The demonstrable value for learners and business – matching or exceeding what was being met in the classroom/ILT mode.

What Strategies Can L&D Teams Use to Design an Effective Virtual Learning Journey That Delivers Seamless Training Results?

L&D teams can leverage our  Learning and Performance Ecosystem  to create an  immersive Virtual Learning experience  and provide a rewarding Virtual Learning journey that delivers seamless training results for remote learners.

Learning and Performance Ecosystem EI Design

Through the following 6 strategies L&D teams can create immersive Virtual Learning experience:

  • Capture attention about training opportunities –  Leverage Newsletters and Teaser Videos to highlight the significance of the initiative.
  • Build awareness around What’s In It For Me (WIIFM) –  Highlight what is the value this training will provide to learners.
  • For Formal training,  opt for immersive learning strategies like  Gamification , AR/VR,  Scenario Based Learning , Interactive Story Based Learning, and Branching Scenarios.
  • Augment Formal training with Performance Support Tools (PSTs)  or job aids – For knowledge application/assisting the learners at the moment of need.
  • Post the training, reinforce  learning to minimize knowledge erosion,  challenge  workers with complex and advanced learning content, provide  practice  zones for learners to hone their skills, and have frequent  reconnects  through curated assets to continue the learning journey.
  • Offer Social or Collaborative Learning  opportunities so learners can learn through peer networking and other group forums – both within and outside of the work environment.

Given the “new normal” of remote learning,  Virtual Trainings  must be the core of an organization’s learning strategy. The  Learning and Performance Ecosystem  is a great way to work with a bigger picture and successfully achieve your training goals by:

  • Creating “sticky” learning experiences.
  • Enabling effective application on the job.
  • Driving change in thinking and behavioral change.

I hope our unique  Learning and Performance Ecosystem  provides the right platform to implement strategies for your Virtual Learning journey and deliver seamless training results.

How to Create Effective Learning Journeys that Drive Employee Performance

May 11, 2021 | By Asha Pandey

How to Create Learning Journeys that Deliver Engaging Remote Trainings and Improve Employee Performance

True learning and the subsequent changes in professional behavior require a learning journey that enhances professional development and leads to improved performance. In this article, I explore the connection between learning journeys and their impact on employee performance.

What Is a Learning Journey?

A learning journey is a comprehensive, continuous process of acquiring knowledge and skills, designed to facilitate long-term behavior change and professional development. Unlike traditional training, which is often a one-time event, a learning journey encompasses a series of interconnected learning experiences. These experiences combine formal training, like structured classes and webinars, with informal learning opportunities initiated either by Learning and Development (L&D) teams or individuals themselves. This approach ensures that learning is not just an isolated event but an ongoing process that integrates new knowledge and behaviors into daily work practices, leading to enhanced employee performance. Formal training serves as a foundational element within this learning ecosystem, while the incorporation of informal training elements personalizes and enriches the learning journey.

Key Characteristics of a Learning Journey:

  • Structured and Ongoing: A learning journey is not a one-time event; instead, it’s a continuous process that unfolds over time, allowing individuals to evolve and adapt to new knowledge and skills. Integral to this process is the role of mentor feedback, which provides learners with essential insights and guidance, helping to refine skills and align learning objectives with real-world applications. This mentorship aspect enriches the learning journey, making it more personalized and effective.
  • Customized Learning Experiences: It comprises personalized content and a variety of delivery methods tailored to meet the unique needs and goals of individuals or teams.
  • Formal and Informal Components: It combines formal training programs with informal learning opportunities , creating a holistic approach that caters to different learning preferences.
  • Behavioral Focus: The primary goal is to induce positive behavioral changes, leading to improved employee performance and alignment with organizational objectives.

What is the Difference Between Traditional Training and Learning Journeys?

The key differences between traditional training and learning journeys can be summarized as follows:

Format and Structure:

  • Traditional Training: Often one-time, event-based sessions.
  • Learning Journeys: Continuous, multi-step processes.

Learning Approach:

  • Traditional Training: Typically focuses on immediate skill acquisition.
  • Learning Journeys: Emphasizes long-term development and application.

Customization:

  • Traditional Training: Generally one-size-fits-all.
  • Learning Journeys: Tailored to individual learning styles and needs.

Engagement and Interaction:

  • Traditional Training: Can be more passive in nature.
  • Learning Journeys: Encourages active participation and engagement.

Outcome and Impact :

  • Traditional Training: Aimed at knowledge transfer.
  • Learning Journeys: Focuses on behavioral change and performance improvement.

Why Should You Invest in Learning Journeys?

In North America’s animal kingdom, the coyote has demonstrated exceptional learning abilities, thriving in various environments. When Meriwether Lewis in the early 19th century first encountered a coyote on his famous exploration, he was perhaps the first of European descent to see one. He attempted to kill and collect it as a new specimen. He and his men were unsuccessful though – an experience that thousands of American hunters have shared since. The coyote has learned to adapt and thrive to constant changes in their ecosystem and are now a common sighting in large cities like San Francisco (California) and Salt Lake City (Utah).

In business, those who can learn are the coyotes – they can adapt and thrive to changing circumstances. Companies should find and develop coyotes in their organizations – employees who actively participate in their own learning journeys and contribute to the journey of their coworkers.

Benefits of Learning Journeys from a Business Perspective:

  • Customization for Strategic Alignment: Learning journeys offer highly customized programs designed to align with an organization’s key goals and objectives. They are structured to address specific enterprise challenges and opportunities, ensuring that the learning journey directly supports the business’s strategic direction.
  • Future-Proofing the Business: By structuring learning journeys around key enterprise goals, organizations are better prepared to face future challenges. This proactive approach drives both incremental and disruptive innovation, allowing businesses to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing landscape.
  • Improved Employee Engagement: Organizations that value learning and encourage professional development through learning journeys experience heightened employee engagement. Employees are more motivated and committed when they feel their growth is supported and recognized.

Benefits of Learning Journeys from an Employee’s Perspective:

  • Guidance for Skill Enhancement: Learning journeys serve as a GPS for individual learners, guiding them through the process of skill acquisition and proficiency development. They offer a clear path through formal and informal learning, helping employees enhance their skills and expertise.
  • Motivation and Awareness: Learning journeys provide motivation and awareness, inspiring individuals to take charge of their own development. They create a sense of purpose and direction, encouraging learners to proactively seek knowledge and growth opportunities.
  • Learning Consumption and Application: These structured journeys guide learners through the stages of learning consumption and knowledge application, ensuring that the acquired skills and knowledge are put into practice effectively.
  • Relevance to Career Aspirations: Learning journeys are highly relevant to individuals, assisting them in achieving their career aspirations. Whether it’s mastering a specific role or acquiring expertise in a particular technological domain, these journeys support individual growth and development.

Learning journeys offer a dual advantage, benefiting both the organization and its employees. They align learning and development with business goals, promoting innovation and engagement. From the employee’s perspective, learning journeys provide a clear path for skill enhancement, motivation, and relevance to career aspirations, ultimately driving continuous improvement and professional development.

Drawbacks of Learning Journeys

While learning journeys offer a comprehensive approach to professional development, they are not without their challenges. Here are some potential drawbacks:

Resource Intensive:

  • Designing a learning journey requires significant time and resources. This includes the creation of tailored content, monitoring progress, and providing ongoing support and feedback.

Can Overwhelm Learners:

  • The extensive nature of learning journeys may overwhelm some individuals, particularly if the content is dense or the pace is too fast.

Requires High Commitment:

  • To be effective, learning journeys demand a high level of commitment and self-motivation from learners, which can be challenging to maintain over longer periods.

Potential for Inconsistency:

  • In a diverse learning environment, ensuring a consistent experience for all learners can be difficult, especially if the journey involves various instructors or methods.

Dependence on Technology:

  • Learning journeys often rely on digital platforms and tools, which can be a barrier for learners with limited access to technology or those who are less tech-savvy.

Evaluation Challenges:

  • Measuring the effectiveness of a learning journey can be complex, as it involves evaluating progress over an extended period and across various learning formats.

Why Do Learning Journeys Work

Learning journeys function as a structured approach to professional and personal development. Here’s how they typically work:

  • Initial Assessment : Identifying individual learner needs and goals.
  • Customized Learning Path : Designing a personalized learning plan based on the initial assessment.
  • Diverse Learning Methods : Incorporating various formats like online modules, workshops, and real-world assignments.
  • Ongoing Support : Providing mentorship, peer interaction, and resources throughout the journey.
  • Continuous Feedback : Regular assessments and feedback to track progress and adjust the learning path.
  • Real-world Application : Opportunities for applying learned skills in practical settings.
  • Reflection and Adaptation : Encouraging learners to reflect on their progress and adapt their learning strategies.

This process ensures that learning is an ongoing, evolving journey tailored to each individual’s needs and goals, leading to effective skill development and personal growth.

How to Create an Effective Learning Journey?

The following are vital issues to consider when building learning journeys:

  • Consider the overarching vision, acknowledging that the future, though uncertain, is always present. Learning occurs over prolonged time and should never been something that employees stop doing, nor should organizations ever rest on their previous laurels. Integrating spaced learning and repetition into this process is crucial, as it greatly contributes to better knowledge retention, allowing learners to revisit and reinforce concepts at regular intervals, thereby solidifying their understanding and application in practical scenarios.
  • Awareness: Before employees can begin a learning journey, they need to be aware of what is available, how the organization will support them, and what lies ahead.
  • Motivation: While some employees are motivated for the pure sake of learning, some are looking for additional extrinsic motivations. Organizations should set up systems to reward progression in the learning process, encouraging employees to begin and continue the learning journey.
  • Participation and experimentation: Throughout the learning journey, employees need a safe space to participate, digest, apply, and experiment with the new knowledge they’re gaining through the learning journey. The experimentation and feedback loop are key to achieving behavior change.
  • On-going connects: Design learning journeys that include more than formal training events. Develop guides for managers to follow-up with employees on what they learned, implement social and mobile learning strategies, and allow employees to direct much of their own informal learning.

What are the Key Components of a Learning Journey?

A well-structured learning journey comprises several key components that work in tandem to ensure effective and engaging education experiences. These components are critical in shaping a comprehensive learning path that caters to diverse learning styles and objectives.

Needs Analysis and Goal Setting:

  • Identifying specific learning needs and objectives.
  • Setting clear, measurable goals for the learning journey.

Varied Learning Formats:

  • Incorporation of diverse learning methods such as online courses, workshops, and practical exercises.
  • Blending formal with informal learning opportunities.

Personalization and Flexibility:

  • Tailoring content to meet individual learner’s needs and preferences.
  • Offering flexible learning paths that accommodate different learning paces.

Continuous Assessment and Feedback:

  • Regular evaluations to track progress.
  • Providing timely feedback to guide and improve learning.

Application and Reinforcement:

  • Opportunities to apply learned skills in real-world scenarios.
  • Reinforcement activities to ensure retention and integration of new knowledge.

Support and Resources:

  • Access to necessary learning materials and resources.
  • Support from instructors, mentors, or peer groups.

These components collectively ensure that a learning journey is not only comprehensive but also adaptable, engaging, and result-oriented.

What Are Key Aspects that Would Help You Create Effective Learning Journeys?

Leverage the following aspects when developing learning journeys:

  • Start with the end in mind : Planning is too often abbreviated in the L&D field, a reaction to develop content as quickly as possible to please business stakeholders. Remember what Albert Einstein said about planning: “If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.”
  • Include all stakeholders:  During the initiation phase, include key stakeholders and ensure that everyone involved in the process has the information they need. Leaders should ask themselves the following questions: What do I know? Who needs to know? Have I told them?
  • Build awareness of the solution with the target audience : Begin with primers to help them understand the big picture of the learning journey. Include an exposition on the current state, the desired future state, and the differences between those two states. Use microlearning hits that get to the point quickly.
  • Stimulate prior knowledge with which learners can scaffold new information.
  • Present content in the most appropriate modality.
  • Model learning strategies to help students assimilate new information.
  • Include as much application and practice as possible with healthy feedback loops.
  • Assess performance, giving additional feedback to learners.
  • Once learners are back on the job, use informal learning and coaching nudges to reinforce the application of new knowledge on the job. Employ performance support systems so learners can quickly find and share information they need in the flow of work.
  • Reward behavior change : While punitive rewards may be effective in the short term, for effective long-term behavior change, learning journeys should offer employees as much purpose, autonomy, and mastery as possible. Once employees are paid a fair and competitive wage, purpose, autonomy, and mastery are more effective methods of motivation than even bonus models.

Making It Work – EI’s Learning and Performance Ecosystem Based Approach to Create Effective Learning Journeys

EI has developed a highly effective model for creating effective learning journeys in a Learning and Performance Ecosystem . It’s a cyclical model that includes the following:

  • Capture attention about learning opportunities.
  • Explain what employees will gain from the learning journey (what’s in it for me).
  • Leverage immersive formal learning events that employ gamification, virtual and augmented reality, scenario based learning, and branching scenarios.
  • Support formal events with performance support tools, giving employees access to information in the flow of work : exactly what they need, when they need it.
  • Reinforce learning after formal events with safe places to practice and receive feedback on their performance.
  • Provide social learning so that learners can collaborate with others progressing in the learning journey, sharing knowledge and experiences.

Learning Journey Example: Sales Training

In our sales training program, we use the Learning and Performance Ecosystem framework to structure an effective learning journey for our team. Here’s how it aligns with the framework:

● Capture Attention : We kick off the learning journey by capturing the attention of our sales team about the upcoming training. This may include email announcements, intranet notifications, and engaging teasers to generate excitement.

● Explain the Benefits : We clearly communicate what participants will gain from the training journey. This includes improved sales skills, increased sales performance, and the potential for enhanced career growth.

● Immersive Formal Learning Events : We leverage immersive formal learning events that employ various cutting-edge techniques, such as gamification, virtual and augmented reality, scenario-based learning, and branching scenarios. These events make the learning experience engaging and memorable.

● Performance Support Tools : We provide performance support tools to our sales team, offering quick access to information in the flow of work. They can access product details, sales scripts, and negotiation tips exactly when needed.

● Reinforcement and Practice : After formal training events, we create safe spaces for our sales team to practice and receive feedback on their performance. This may involve role-playing exercises, simulated sales calls, and peer evaluations.

● Social Learning : We encourage social learning, allowing learners to collaborate with colleagues who are progressing in the training journey. They can share knowledge, experiences, and best practices, fostering a sense of community and continuous improvement.

This sales training learning journey not only equips our sales team with the necessary skills and knowledge but also keeps them engaged and motivated throughout the process. By aligning with the Learning and Performance Ecosystem framework, we ensure a comprehensive and effective approach to sales training that yields tangible results and benefits for both our team and the organization.

Parting Thoughts

Effective behavior change occurs over time as desired competencies and behaviors are reinforced through a blend of formal and informal training. Learning is not a one-time event. Professionals seek mastery of their trade, striving for autonomy and purpose. Learning journeys, thoughtfully developed and shared with employees, are an effective method of facilitating behavior change that aligns to enterprise goals and initiatives.

I hope this article provides the requisite insights on how you can use our unique Learning and Performance Ecosystem to create effective learning journeys and boost employee performance.

LinkedIn Learning: SSO to Non-SSO Authentication

  • 5 contributors

What this Document Tells You

The following steps outline the SSO to non-SSO transition process:

linkedin-learning-sso-non-sso-process-steps

Prior to switching your organization’s authentication, we recommend that you check with your IT team to make sure SSO is truly not available outside of the organization network.

SSO to Non-SSO Authentication Overview

In emergencies, many LinkedIn Learning partner organizations direct their employees and learners to remote working environments where they maintain their access to LinkedIn Learning. These situations involve several use cases, including the following scenarios:

Furloughed employees/learners with access to the organization’s VPN

Furloughed employees/learners without access to the organization’s VPN

Full-time or contract employees working remotely, but lacking access to the organization’s VPN

Organizations concerned about VPN overload due to its majority workforce practicing remote work

These members fall into three categories:

Those with off-site VPN access who have the simple option of extending the SSO timeout period (up to 180 days)

Those whose organizations have directed them to unbind their corporate SSO and use non-SSO authentication (e.g., out of concerns for bandwidth overload, among others)

Those without remote VPN access, who can maintain access to LinkedIn Learning only by switching from SSO to non-SSO

Advantages and Disadvantages

Before you disconnect your company SSO and move to non-SSO LinkedIn Learning access, you should understand the advantages and disadvantages of making this transition.

You can continue to access LinkedIn Learning content while working outside your company or organization network.

Your company or organization need not worry about VPN overload due to high-volume traffic.

If you don’t have remote VPN access (due to company policy, bandwidth, and so on) you still can access LinkedIn Learning.

Disadvantages

When you return to work on-site, you may have to update any profiles added while SSO was disabled.

When the grace period (i.e., access to LinkedIn Learning after termination) for laid-off employees is over, admins must manually deactivate the learners' licenses in order to revoke access to LinkedIn Learning.

There is a possibility of more internal IT issues and tickets due to learners trying to access LinkedIn Learning through the reactivated SSO, or the learners not receiving the invitation email once their organization grants them SSO access.

You must manually add learners to LinkedIn Learning, either individually or in bulk via a CSV upload.

Download List of Existing Users

Before you download the CSV file of existing users, filter them by taking the following steps:

After you log in, if you are not already in the Admin screen, select Go to Admin > People > Users .

Click "Select All" in the "Licenses" section.

linkedin-learning-custom-attributes-field-screen

Click the "Download CSV" button and open the file.

Deactivate your SSO

To deactivate your SSO connection, take the following steps:

After you log in, if you are not already in the Admin screen, select Go to Admin > Me > Authenticate .

linkedin-learning-authenticate-navigation-screen

Select Configure single sign-on and locate your SSO connection.

Switch the connection from "Active" to "Inactive".

linkedin-learning-sso-inactive-screen

Deactivate Users who have Logged in via SSO

To deactivate SSO users, take the following steps:

For any user with a value in the "Authentication method" column, change their "Default_license_learning_allLanguages_status" to "inactive" (the license column heading may vary based on what type of license you have).

linkedin-learning-deactivate-users-sso-file

Save a copy of the CSV file to your desktop.

Go to People > Users > Manage Users > User CSV .

In the pop-up, click Upload CSV .

linkedin-learning-upload-users-screen

Navigate to the file and upload it to your account.

Switch Authentication Method and Re-Invite Users

To switch the authentication method to non-SSO and re-invite users, take the following steps:

Using the file mentioned in the above the steps, in the "authentication_method" column, add "no_sso" for each user.

In the "Default_license_learning_allLanguages_status" column, enter "active" for each user.

linkedin-learning-activate-users-file

Revolutionise Your Learning with the Power of Contextual Learning and SSO

The Camms Single Sign-On (SSO) Portal has been upgraded to allow you to easily access learning resources related to the products you use. With this improvement, you can segue effortlessly from using the product to learning more about it on Camms.College.

Using SSO and contextual learning together is important, so make sure you activate SSO to take advantage of this feature. Want to know more about what contextual learning is and how it can benefit you? Keep reading.

What Is SSO and Why Is It important?

Contextual learning.

  • Unlock the Power of Seamless Access: How SSO Can Revolutionise Your Organisation

Why We Want You to Activate SSO

Remembering and entering multiple credentials for different platforms can be quite tedious. But with Single Sign-On (SSO) capability, you can easily access all your platforms without having to worry about remembering different passwords.

At Camms.College, we’re committed to providing you with a seamless experience when using our software and learning about its features. We’ve gathered some information for you on how to use our SSO portal to connect your software with our latest learning experience – Contextual Learning.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The deeper you dive, the more you’ll discover!

We’re delighted to announce our latest educational experience – Contextual Learning! This innovative approach allows Camms product users to learn about the software while actually using it. With this in-app learning method, you can apply key takeaways in real-time and make the most of Camms capabilities. It’s a great way to enhance your skills and take your software capabilities to the next level.

Here’s a handy-dandy example to make your life easier. Let’s say you’re using Camms.Risk and working on the Control Register. Now, you’ll see an “i” icon – click on it, and you’ll get a preview of a webinar or specific learning material related to the Control Register. But that’s not all. If you need more information, you can easily navigate to more detailed learning content on Camms.College; without even having to log in.

By using this feature, you can gain a deeper understanding of the product’s capabilities, best practices, and optimise it to improve your day-to-day work management. It’s a great way to enhance your skills and get the most out of Camms.Risk.

Why SSO Matters to You and Your Organisation

Effortless Access

Say goodbye to the hassle of remembering multiple login credentials. SSO simplifies authentication for Camms users by allowing them to access multiple applications with just one set of login credentials. Acting as a central point of authentication, SSO provides seamless access to all enterprise applications, streamlining the authentication process and making it more efficient.

Access to Contextual and On-Demand Learning

As mentioned, you can now effortlessly gain access to learning content on Camms.College from within the product itself as the SSO will log you in and direct you to the relevant learning whenever you require support.

Find the help and the resources you need while learning about the product.

The on-demand learning concept allows you to learn about the product anytime, anywhere. Pop-up windows within the software will guide you to the right resources for any feature you’re unsure about, saving time and ensuring everything in the software is in sync.

The on-demand learning concept allows the users to access any learning resource as and when they want – from anywhere. This comes in handy if you are unsure of a feature in the platform. Because you can now simply let the popup lead you to the right resources to get information on how to use the feature. This doesn’t just save your time, but it also makes sure everything happening within the software is in sync.

Improved Discoverability

We’ve placed the Camms.College icon on the SSO Portal, so finding learning resources has never been easier. With just a single click, users can access all the learning collateral they need to improve their use of the Camms suite. This feature increases the uptake and return on investment of Camms software for your organisation, allowing for a more efficient and productive workflow.

Better Password Policy Enforcement

Kiss password fatigue goodbye! SSO provides a centralised location for password entry, making it easy to enforce password security rules. You can reset your password quickly and easily, as you only need to do it in one place. This reduces the burden of having to remember multiple passwords for different apps and services, so you can focus on more important task.

Boosts employee efficiency, Improves Productivity

SSO can boost productivity by eliminating the need for users to repeatedly enter their login details while switching between applications. Typing multiple usernames and passwords across different services can be tedious and time-consuming. It also causes mental fatigue, hindering employees from focusing on essential tasks. By simplifying the authentication process, SSO helps users access their applications faster, allowing them to concentrate on their work and improve overall efficiency.

This infographic provides a visualisation of how SSO works.

As illustrated below, if you are a Camms.Project or a Camms.Risk user you will be able to move through applications after just one authentication session.

your learning journey (sso)

We’d love for you to activate SSO because it helps us understand your unique needs and how our learning resources can best support you on your journey with Camms. If you’re curious about how to activate SSO, don’t hesitate to contact us at  [email protected] or reach out to your dedicated account manager.

Contextual Learning is now activated for the below Q1 2023 releases

  • Camms.Risk Control Management – Viewing Compliance Controls in the dashboard

Nevada Today

A passion for learning: ph.d. candidate reflects on the importance of growing from mistakes, lauren parker studies cellular molecular pharmacology and physiology.

Headshot of Lauren Parker

Lauren Parker hopes to study female reproductive diseases that affect fertility.

As a first-generation Filipina college student, Lauren Parker has suffered from her fair share of imposter syndrome and self-doubt but chooses to use each new experience as a learning opportunity, rather than a roadblock. Her lifelong passion for learning and a desire to share knowledge led her to pursue a Ph.D. in cellular molecular pharmacology and physiology at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med).

Currently a first-year Ph.D. student, Parker is examining how a small drug molecule affects prostate cancer metastasis. Depending on the results of this project, she intends to continue to study the effects of this drug on cervical cancer and other reproductive diseases.

As she narrows her research focus, Parker hopes to study female reproductive diseases that affect fertility as well as how to make assisted reproductive techniques less invasive and less troublesome for women.

After completing her Ph.D., Parker is interested in exploring industry research or clinical research and ultimately sees herself returning to academia to pursue teaching and a research lab.

Why did you decide to pursue research?

“I decided to pursue research because I love learning and challenging myself. From a young age, I knew that I wanted a career that involved teaching in some capacity. It wasn’t until I started college that I learned you could have a career dedicated to researching a specific area of science. When I came to the realization that I could teach and conduct research related to reproductive biology, I knew that a Ph.D. was what I needed to do so that I could one day become an academic. It is very motivating to know that I can share my knowledge in the form of teaching and in the form of contributing to the greater knowledge within scientific research.”

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your UNR Med education and how did you overcome it?

“Being a first-generation college student and entering my Ph.D. program without a master’s has resulted in some serious imposter syndrome. It is difficult not to feel inferior when you are surrounded by classmates who have more knowledge and research experience than you. My first semester was challenging in the way that I was afraid to ask questions when it felt like I should already know the answers. I’ve come to realize that many of my classmates feel the same way as I do, we all are just really good at hiding it – and that is extremely validating.

A woman works in a lab with test tubes and an instructor stands nearby guiding her.

“Additionally, all of my instructors have been very kind and even happy that I ask for help and/or clarification, which has been so relieving. Ultimately, I came to the realization that I needed to make the most of my graduate education. I acknowledge that I have so much to learn and I try my best to reframe my self-doubt by instead embracing the fact that I have an amazing opportunity to learn from my experienced peers and from the well-respected experts in my program."

What specialty or area are you most passionate about pursuing, and what draws you to this field?

"I am incredibly passionate about reproductive biology. Specifically, I am interested in studying female reproductive diseases that affect fertility and how to make assisted reproductive techniques less invasive and less troublesome for women. It sounds cheesy and simple, but what drew me to this field is the fascinating way that life is formed. It is mind-blowing to me that you can take a male and a female gamete, cells that we can’t even see with the naked eye, and when you bring them together, they hold the instructions for creating a human being."

Can you share a memorable experience during your training that has significantly impacted your journey?

“As I was getting to know everyone in my first lab rotation, I was talking with our Research Associate Professor about my past research experiences and how I felt I was not allowed to make any mistakes. He told me ‘You’re going to make some mistakes, that’s inevitable, but you learn your best when you make mistakes and fail,’ and that was so reassuring to hear.”

What advice do you have for future students interested in pursuing research?

“Always be kind and try your best to attend/participate in your program’s events – even if you think it’s not related to your research/goals or if you think it might be boring. It’s really important to show your face and to be a somewhat active member of your program. Being kind and showing up can bring you more opportunities than you might think.”
