Recent tour reviews

Don't know how good 311's show was and couldn't give you a review of them. We left (with a lot of other concert goers) after The Offspring were done playing. Who's ever idea it was to have The Offspring not headlining the tour should have their credentials revoked until they pull their head outta their ass. The Offspring was a great show and played a lot of the early music that most of us love!

311 were great! They covered their career perfectly, playing songs from every album and interacting with the crowd. I’m sure every lady in the crowd was jealous of Nick Hexum’s wife as well, he must work out like a fiend. Excellent show. The Offspring were ok. The lead vocals weren’t loud enough and the lead guitar sounded out of tune at times. Still, they were fun. Well worth the price of admission!

During the early 90's I don't think I could relate to the 311 very much tbh, as I was born in 1986, so until the late 90's, most of the lyrics would have went over my head anyway.

I couldn't truly appreciate the band for what they played and who they were until I was about 14, at which point, I started a new era of musical enjoyment... Not your typical "Rock" band is what I think I liked best, but a combination of MANY Genres.

My first Album I listened to was Grassroots in 2000/2001 after a friend introduced me to the band with their self titled album with, at the time the only song I knew at all (Down) right before From Chaos was released...

Grassroots was so unique and different from what little I heard from 311 - "311" which is what I liked instantly I think, never the "same song" it seemed on any album. A bit out of order, I listed to From Chaos, and instantly fell in love with the band. What an album! ... Don't get me wrong, still one of my personal favorites, but I have to say in all honestly Music/Grassroots/311/Sound System/Transistor/From Chaos/and Evolver are still IMO their best albums with the ability to to be played from 0:00 on the first track to the end of the album without ever "wanting to get to the next good song" and just enjoying every single track. Don't get me wrong I like some newer songs from Don't Tread on Me - present day, which I do add to my playlist, and not to say I don't have favorites either, but what a hell of a band!

Sadly, when I bring them up to someone that didn't listen to anything other than what was played on the radio in the 90's-00's, I feel like they missed out on some AMAZING concerts, and do not know who they are until I play "Champagne" or something of the likes. Fortunately, unless a person truly cannot appreciate Rock/Alternative/Reggae/(some) Hip-Hop, I always get a "who the hell is this" and are inspired.

I have been to concerts beginning in 2004 with the Roots, at the time unknown to me, impressed me with their talent, and now they are on TV every night with Jimmy Fallon. I still find that funny, like damn, the TV audience knows they are talented, but I have only seen a couple times where they REALLY were able to shine on TV like they did the first time I was blown away by their talent in concert.

Since, I have seen 311 more times than I can count,or remember, due to getting older and varying levels of inebriation, heh, ranging from sober to blackout drunk/stoned, I always had a good time and enjoyed the music thoroughly. Not to mention, being performed very well without "fake crap" or being offbeat... Truly musicians. I know I have seen them approximately 10 times though, based off memories/ friends/ and T-shirts... more than any other artist I have cared to see live.

Some of my favorites I remember well were 311 headlining, and the opening acts being The Roots, Snoop Dogg, KMK, Sublime w/ Rome, Pepper, The Offspring, Slightly Stoopid, and Cypress Hill to name my favorites/able to cognitively remember ;)

I STRONGLY recommend anyone check them out at least once. Lastly, I hope 311 continues to play on cruise liners occasionally, and I have yet been able to travel out of state for 311 Day (JEALOUS NEW ORLEANS! lol, and Vegas). Looking forward to seeing them again with The Offspring this 2018! Both are a couple of my favorite bands I grew up with, would prefer 311 to be headlining, but who really cares if it's a good show? F@#% The Bull$%^& it's time to throw down!!

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith 'would hate it' if football broke away: Oller

311 ohio tour

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith and I have not always seen eye-to-eye on the who, how and whys of college sports. Any friction probably has to do with my tendency toward sarcasm and his propensity to schmooze, as much as it does the issues. Oil and water. We’d make a fantastic podcast team.

But as Smith addressed media and staffers Thursday as part of his farewell tour – he is retiring after 19 years at OSU – it struck me that we are in lockstep on what I consider the No. 1 non-negotiable: college football should not stray from its academic roots to become a professional minor-league sport.

College football is big business , but but the sport is married to education in important ways, and should remain so. Smith addressed the possibility of football separating from the university, where players are no longer students, where OSU licenses its name and leases its facilities and the association between school and sport is negotiated.

“I’d hate it. I think whatever model exists has to be tethered to education,” Smith said. “All the blessings I’ve had thinking back, not just football players, athletes over the years, we’ve changed so many people’s lives.”

Granted, sometimes the change is minimal.

“We have them come to us and they’re very mature and focused and get things done and we’re facilitating their time here and helping them develop,” Smith said.

As often as not, however, an 18-year-old arrives at Ohio State acting like a kid more than an adult.

“Some come to us at a very immature level and we do a great job of getting them maturity and a great job of helping the light bulb come on for them,” Smith said. “I just think in higher education we have to keep it tethered to education. If not, if it’s not a part of that, then make it semi-pro and take it outside the institution and you pay the institution a contract to use the stadium.

"But that model would bother me, because I would know that those student-athletes who, regardless of the fact they might be getting some level of money, they’re not being taught how to live the next part of their lives. That’s probably old-school in me, but I’m just passionate about giving these young people the opportunity to be educated.”

I have enough old-school thinking in me, too, to preach a similar message. I ran track at OSU – after Jesse Owens, believe it or not – and the sport was something we did at our school, not apart from it. The name on the front of the jersey still matters.

CBS Masters ratings continue to drop

Golf has seen an uptick in play since the pandemic. But seeing golf being played continues to decline.

Sports Business Journal reported on Tuesday that CBS drew 9.58 million viewers for Sunday’s final-round telecast of the Masters – the lowest ratings since 2021, when 9.45 million viewers watched Hideki Matsuyama win the green jacket.

Not including the COVID years of 2022-21, it was the lowest viewership since 1993.

What’s going on? A couple of things. First, LIV has siphoned off many of golf’s more interesting players , without viewer eyeballs going with them. LIV’s ratings remain abysmal. True, the Masters brought many of the LIV and PGA Tour players together under one roof, which would seem to increase interest. But the buzz did not follow.

What we’re learning is out of sight out of mind. Most golf fans have kind of forgotten that Dustin Johnson and Cameron Smith exist. It also did not help that the biggest names and most interesting players in LIV did not contend at Augusta National.

There also is a general fatigue among fans over the Tour vs. LIV faceoff, not to mention the money squabbles that have soured a certain percentage of the golf populace.

But it’s not all the Saudis’ fault. Streaming golf over digital platforms continues to grow – the Masters might have the best app on earth – with overall tour digital visits up 18% over 2023. Social media engagements also are up across the board.

So while TV ratings concern golf’s execs, at least the higher-ups at CBS, (ESPN’s Thursday and Friday Masters broadcasts were the network’s highest since 2015) there is optimism that the sport remains attractive to viewers, who simply are tuning in differently.

But pessimism is out there, too.

As tour player Max Homa put it, “I think we hit this year-and-a-half or two-year rut as both golfers and golf leagues that was just about making the players happy, and unfortunately and quite obviously the fans were not benefited by that.”

Listening in

“I’m just about playing golf the way I’ve always done it, having fun and showing my emotions. It’s one thing to play with Tiger and get some attention, but at the end of the day people like you for who you are. I’m just myself on the golf course and I think that’s why people gravitate towards me.” Ohio State golfer Neal Shipley, explaining how having played the final round of the Masters with Tiger Woods will not change him.

Swimming is excellent exercise, so why aren’t there more pools that provide more than one or two “lap-only” lanes for those who want a workout? I understand that recreational swimmers and those rehabbing injuries don’t need roped-off lanes, and that most pools offer designated lap-swim times on their daily schedules, but it is frustrating to show up at the pool only to have the 2-3 lanes already filled. Maybe I’m just not looking hard enough?

Youtube star wesley bryan is rocking a mustache, has a new putter and, oh, is winning this week, share this article.

311 ohio tour

The changes in Wesley Bryan’s life seem never-ending these days. Sure, the co-star of the Bryan Bros Golf YouTube channel is still creating crazy content, like when he and brother George recently tried to break 50 from the front tees at Aiken Golf Club, just a half-hour east of Augusta National.

But Bryan and his wife Elizabeth just welcomed a third baby girl into the world eight weeks ago, he’s dropped a new putter in his bag and he’s sporting a new facial hair look.

How is all this change affecting his golf game?

Just wonderfully, thanks.

Bryan followed up a 63 in the opening round of the Corales Puntacana Championship with a second-round 66 on Friday, one that included him going 4 under on the day’s final three holes to get to 15 under at the event’s midpoint.

The week in the Dominican Republic started with a new L.A.B. putter that has Bryan leading the field in putting through two days at Puntacana Resort and Club.

“This is week one with the L.A.B. in the bag. It cooperated, it’s going to stay in there for the forever future at this point, that’s what it feels like,” Bryan said. “I just saw a lot of people that are switching to it and I was like, man, I’ve got to at least give it a try.

“To be fair, it’s a little bit polarizing on the internet and a lot of people love it or hate it, whatever. Art, science, whatever it is, I just wanted to try it.”

Bryan’s consecutive low rounds have him in a good position to claim his second PGA Tour title as Justin Lower continued his run of solid play and is a stroke behind Bryan at 14 under, but the field drops off from there. Coincidentally, Bryan’s first win came back in 2017 at the RBC Heritage, where the top players are playing this week without him.

But he’s shown no signs of holding a grudge. In fact, he and his burgeoning family seem to be living the life at the beachside resort. Bryan said his crew spent plenty of time at the pool on Thursday and the group was planning to hit the nearby lagoon on Friday.

“I don’t know how life gets any better than that, honestly,” he said.

As for his new look, Bryan said the new mustache came by circumstance, but it’s potentially a look he could stick with. Especially if he continues to play like he has thus far this week. Bryan missed the cut in his only other PGA Tour start this year in Puerto Rico and missed the cut in 11 of  19 starts last season.

“It started with a beard to start the week and my wife, she doesn’t like when I have a beard, so I said I would shave it off,” he said. “I brought a really bad razor blade down here and a trimmer and anything so I tackled the cheeks a few days ago and it was brutal, and I went for the chin yesterday. Now unfortunately I think the stache is here to stay for the rest of the week.

“Sorry, Elizabeth … but I feel like until we shoot over par or whatever, then we’ll shave it off, but right now it’s here to stay. Shout out, Carson Young.”
