Euro Adventure Riding Europe Using ACT – Adventure Country Tracks

Riding Europe Using ACT – Adventure Country Tracks

Slowly the world is opening back up. Numerous European countries are dropping or lowering restrictions on entry. Is this giving you the itch to ship your motorcycle across the pond?

Sure! But where to ride?

Maybe you’ve seen the TET (Trans Euro Trail) and its similarities to the U.S.-based TAT (Trans America Trail), but that’s not your style of riding—you maybe are looking for something more like the BDR tracks. This article is for you, then!

I chatted with the founders of Adventure Country Track aka ACT

Tell me about ACT, how it began, what the mission is?

Parc natural del montseny.

act bike tours

The Montseny is a mountain range in Catalonia Northeast of Barcelona. 1978 it was declared as a nature park, covering an area of 301 km². The name Montseny has a Latin origin and means: signal mountain, probably because of the significant shape, which can be seen from many places in Catalonia. The highest peak is the Turó de l’Home with 1,706 meters in the Vallès Oriental and many more peaks reach more than 1,000 meters. Meanwhile, this mountain range is a popular spot for hikers and nature lovers. Because of the natural conditions on one hand and the cultural influence, on the other hand, the UNESCO declared the region as a biosphere reserve.

Cabo de Creus (Cap de Creus )

act bike tours

The Cap Creus is the last outlet of the Pyrenees and at the same time the most easterly point of the Iberian Peninsula on the map. That is one of the reasons why the Cap with its lighthouse is a particularly important point in the nautical charts. This nature reserve is the only one in Spain, which covers sea and land at the same time; it contains the largest uninhabited area in the Spanish Mediterranean. The rocky coast which is barren and mainly consists of slate is continually broken up by small bays. The Fauna and Flora of the area are quite unique and comprise a variety of very rare species of seabirds in danger of extinction. Winter is domineered by very strong northerly winds which continually hinder fishing and maritime traffic. Therefore the area around the Cap registers a very small environmental pollution and is renowned as an underwater paradise for divers. (www.cbrava.com)

Andorra la Vella

act bike tours

Covering only 170 square miles, Andorra is one of the smallest countries in Europe. From 1279 onwards, it was reigned by two rulers, the Spanish Bishop of Seu d'Urgell and the French Duke of Foix - later the French President. Even though Andorra became independent in 1993, both are formally still principals of this state. Being a tax free area, Andorra today looks like an oversized shopping mall.

Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park

act bike tours

To the north of Huesca, in the Aragonese Pyrenees, aficionados of high mountains will enjoy a unique national park in Spain: Ordesa and Monte Perdido. Consisting of four valleys (Añisclo, Escueta, Ordesa and Picuaín) and one peak, Monte Perdido, it unfolds like a scene from a film, where different ecosystems flourish together. A natural paradise where you can explore meadows, enormous forests, incredible gorges, glaciers, experience perpetual snow, and admire the unique karstic landscape, formed over thousands of years.(www.spain.info)

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

act bike tours

For many centuries the small town of St-Jean Pied de Port (meaning “St-Jean at the Foot of the Pass”) was the last stop in France for pilgrims heading south over the Spanish border and on to Santiago de Compostela. Today it is the starting point for hikers attempting the most popular part of St. James’s Way, the Camino Frances. You will see many of them walking down rue de la Citadelle, the cobbled main street. From here the 850 km walk to Santiago takes about 6 to 8 weeks to complete; more than 50,000 pilgrims embark on this journey every year. The walled town itself is beautifully preserved, complete with ramparts and crowned by a sturdy citadel. The unique atmosphere makes it a great place for a little break.

ACT Pyrenees Unpaved! UPP

Andorra    |   france    |   spain, the pyrenees have long been known to be a paradise for motorcyclists and more than just an alternative to the alps..

Off-road aficionados in particular can find their bliss in this mountain range that stretches along the Spanish-French border all the way from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. With Touratech developing their Adventure Country Tracks and Edelweiss’ knowledge of how to set up and conduct memorable motorcycle tours, joining forces seemed like a natural conclusion. So, we did. This tour incorporates the original ACT as much as possible without sacrificing the typical comfort you can expect on an Edelweiss tour. You will spend more than half of your riding time on unpaved surfaces which can be anything from forestry roads to rough mountain trails. They may be steep in places, wet and muddy after rains, and even water crossings are possible. The one thing that all these tracks have in common is their remoteness; they lead you deep into the backcountry, where the land seems untouched, and the scenery is gorgeous. Of course, the paved sections are beautiful and fun, too, and they offer a (sometimes much appreciated) respite from the dusty parts. You don’t have to be an enduro pro to join this tour, but you should be a confident rider with some positive off-road experience. If you enjoy going “off the radar” for a few days and combining the challenge of riding off-road with all the comfort and safety of a guided Edelweiss tour, then this one’s for you. Join us in the Pyrenees and give it a go on the Adventure Country Tracks!

The tour has been designed for solo riders. However, a skilled rider-passenger team can do the tour with two-up as well.

Città di Castello

The first day is the “offroad day”.

The departure from Bertinoro offers a wonderful view of the Adriatic coast and narrow asphalt roads that in a few kilometers take us on the fast dirt roads of the Savio Valley. We cross thick woods and roads on the top of gentle hills until direct southwards to reach the mountains of the Marche Apennines. Panoramas that open suddenly and paved roads that are similar to those with a natural background characterize this first day of travel.

There are also passages through typical villages of central Italy. The ground of road is generally very good especially on sunny days immediately after rainy days: more grip on gravel roads and dust disappears. In summer the temperature could also be high (28/32 degrees) since the areas touched are not very high.

Monte Nerone and Monte Cartria: the two peaks of the stage! After crossing the woods above Città di Castello It rises quickly above 1000 meters in height and can be reached the Monte Nerone (1500 meters) from which a stupendous view over the central Apennines allows us to observe the other peak of the day: Monte Catria at 1700mt.

The descent that brings us to Gubbio after Scheggia is a beautiful asphalt ribbon of pure fun and after town of Gubbio through easy gravel roads it reaches Passignano sul Trasimento: the arrival at sunset is pure poetry, with the red sun reflecting on the lake.

The road along Lake Trasimeno takes us to Badiaccia, we enter Tuscany and we cross the Val di Chiana plain on the small roads that, after 30km, lead us to the foot of the pirme hills. From this point to Orvieto there is a succession of ups and downs on the hills of the beautiful Val d’Orcia (UNESCO World Heritage); you pass by characteristic small towns and villages made famous in the world for their wines and their beauty: Montepulciano, San Qurico d’Orcia, Bagno a Vignioni with its square of thermal water are just a few examples. Through the typical white roads of Tuscany, we pass to the north of Monte Amiata and head south east to reach Orvieto and its majestic cathedral and your famous “Well of St. Patrick” The landscape and the bottom of the roads in the last part of the stage is very different: woods and a more compact bottom become the protagonists again.

A day full of woods and mountains over 1000 meters high at the end.

After the Corbara Lake the first off-road sections begin with a good bottom but with some points in the isido-like rock, you ride through beautiful woods that are never dense and plateaus with very fun and flowing roads.

After Sangemini the landscape and the terrain change: you enter the most mountainous area of the day. With the last 155km you cross some peaks with important climbs and descents: Monte Birbone (1250mt), Monte Metano (1100mt) and Monte Peritone (1200mt). The descent from Mount Peritone takes us directly to Leonessa: a small town at the foot of Monte Terminillo (2200mt)

Marina di San Vito

Abruzzo: wild plateaus and beautiful sea..

Leaving Leonessa, you take the first 15 km off-road heading south east and then return to the winding road SR471, the city of our departure to Posta: a small town on the Velino river. We continue to drive on busy little streets and through small villages characteristic of this area of Italy and after Bivio Pizzoli, the stretch of off-road with 12 hairpin bends takes us to a plateau at 1200 meters above sea level within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park (it is forbidden to leave the streets).

The descent from Monte Stabiata leads us to cross Paganica, where it is still possible to see the signs left by the strong earthquake that struck this region in 2006. Passing Colle Biffone, after Pescomaggiore, we arrive in the picturesque Santo Stefano di Sessanio and immediately before we see the Rocca Calsascio, which we will soon touch along the next stretch in the outskirts to the village of Calascio. The last 120km of the stage are an indigestion of curves. The last 120km of the stage consists of countless curves. After passing the Lanciano Pass (1500mt) we cross the Maiella Natural Park and arrive in the Lanciano valley that leads us to the Abruzzese sea, destination of our journey in the scenic Costa dei Trabocchi.

This was the perfect day. It was well-organized, fun and we met some great people. The bike ride was beautiful and was a great way to experience wineries beyond the traditional car or bus. Our tour guide Jackie was a star!... it was the highlight of our Sonoma trip far above other organized winery tours.

Your Ride to Adventure

act bike tours

It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are... you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle .

~ Ernest Hemingway

Our Philosophy

I really enjoyed our fall ride along the Guilford/Branford shoreline. Although it is not very far from where I live, I felt like I was on vacation for a few hours! The scenery is spectacular and there were lots of opportunities to stop and enjoy it. It was great to have  someone else lead the way so I could just enjoy the ride. Hope we can get out and do it again!"

Rhonda,  North Haven, CT

Marianne & Mark have been guiding rides since 2009.  Mark served as a Certified Cycle Coach with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "TEAM IN TRAINING".  Both have participated in countless Century Rides and have traveled on cycling tours in Europe and parts of Asia.

Our philosophy is “if you’re going to ride in some of the most beautiful parts of our state, you should stop and smell the roses once in awhile” . We bring that philosophy to our leisurely four hour, 20 mile guided bike and boat tour of the scenic Connecticut Shoreline.  We've  been riding this scenic route for over 25 years and always enjoy bringing recreational cyclists to our favorite part of the state.

Find Your Grand Adventure with a 2024 Guided Tour

2024 guided tours are filling up. find your adventure today.

With an Adventure Cycling Guided Tour, you can count on five things:

  • Curated experiences traversing the histories, cultures, and landscapes of the U.S.
  • A tour type to fit your travel style
  • Small groups of 10-15 participants, except for our larger Fully Supported Events
  • A fully planned trip, without the worry of routing, navigation, or reservations, from an experienced organization
  • Warm fuzzies knowing your Guided Tour purchase supports a nonprofit and its mission, not a for-profit company

We’re excited to hit the road with you!

Our goal is to facilitate a life-changing journey with a Guided Tour that fits your needs. Our Guided Tours provide a range of experiences: long weekend to epic, pavement to dirt, historically focused to earning the scenic vistas. They also come in a variety of lengths and difficulties as well as different levels of support and price points. We offer everything from self-sufficient nights under the stars to fully catered experiences and inn-to-inn options.

Every tour comes with knowledgeable Tour Leaders, routing, navigation, and reservations. All you have to do is participate! Some tours provide opportunities to get to know your fellow riders better, such as group-made meals and grocery shopping, while other types of tours are less interactive. Participation in these small group activities on some tour types is all part of the Adventure Cycling experience.

“Without a doubt, the best part of the tour was the friendships we made. We came from all levels of experience. Everyone was supportive. Every single day, no matter what the difficulty of the day, we laughed.” – Sam, Tour Participant

Types of Tours

We have a variety of tour formats that suit different styles of touring. All come in different lengths and levels of difficulty, which we call Adventure Levels, ranging from Level 1 to Level 5. Generally, our tours have between 10 and 15 participants, with the exception being our larger Fully Supported Events.

Self-Contained This type of touring is all pedal power and no vehicular support. All shared gear is carried by the group, and cooking responsibilities rotate among its members. A majority of nights are spent outdoors under the stars. An indoor stay or restaurant may be sprinkled in just when you need it the most.

Inn-to-Inn This is the type of tour for those of us who prefer the comforts of a cozy bed. As the name suggests, each night is spent indoors. Breakfasts and dinners are enjoyed in restaurants. Although there is no vehicle support, you’ll only need to carry the minimal gear of your clothes, toiletries, basic repair items, water, and a bag lunch for the day.

Van-Supported If you prefer touring without the load of a full set of panniers, but you still love camping, we have a van and trailer to haul your gear. Just worry about pedaling. Carry nothing more than water/lunch/snacks and maybe some rain gear if the weather’s dodgy. You’ll still have fun with your partner rotating on camp cooking duty. But not to worry, on certain tours, there are occasional restaurant meals and indoor stays.

Fully Supported and Family Adventure  Events The top level of support! Meals are catered. Luggage is hauled. Starry night camping for those into tents and motel options for those who aren’t. Water and snack stops along the route. Just enjoy the riding, the scenery, and the people to your front and back. These tours are larger in size (20–50 participants) and staffed by several tour leaders all looking out for you.

Education Not sure you’re ready to take the leap into full-on independent touring? Our Intro to Road and Intro to Gravel Touring & Bikepacking courses help you break down the basics. There’s some in-person classroom work before setting out as a group on a short self contained tour. We also offer Leadership Training Courses for those experienced in bike touring but want to start leading their own groups.

“This was my first organized multiday trip. I was traveling solo and I had a wonderful time. I could set my own pace and never felt rushed. The food was fantastic and there was lots of it! I can’t say enough good things about the leaders. I will definitely sign up for another one.” – Kelly, Tour Participant

Doing Good with Every Pedal Stroke

Adventure Cycling is a nonprofit. Every Guided Tour purchase supports our mission of inspiring, empowering, and connecting people to travel by bicycle.

For nearly 50 years, we’ve been researching and mapping one of the largest bicycle route systems in the world. And we’re not done yet. Our programs focus on making bicycle travel more accessible to more people through mapping short and long routes, hosting educational resources and events, and creating an open, supportive community for all riders.

All of our tours are listed below. If you have any questions, give us a call or reach out through our online chat. We’re here for you — because Your Adventure Awaits!

I loved everywhere we got to see.”  — Jeff, Tour Participant “ I love the little towns, particularly Patagonia. Tombstone was interesting but did not get to see much of it. Bisbee is a fascinating and historic community. The roads were generally fine and not too busy. The terrain was sufficiently challenging, but not intimidating for this early season rider who was not in top shape.”  — Stephanie, Tour Participant

Self Guided Cycling Trips in USA & Canada

Cycling through Pt.Taillon National Park along Lac St. Jean, Quebec

The key benefits to self-guided cycling tours in North America are their flexibility and affordability.

As the name implies, a self-guided cycling trip in the United States or Canada trip means that you guide yourself, which allows you the complete flexibility of setting your own daily travel agenda. Start the day when it suits you and stop to admire attractions for as long as you desire.

Supported with luggage transfers, detailed route descriptions and maps to assist with navigation, self-guided cycling trips will provide you with a heightened connection to your chosen destination in the US or Canada, immersing your senses in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the destination.

After a day of cycling, you’ll find your luggage has been transferred to your next accommodation, typically charming two, three, or four-star hotels or inns that embrace the local flavour and style. With modern 21-speed bicycles or electric bikes supplied, you’ll feel the wind in your hair in no time at all!

Most or our North American self-guided cycling trips require only two people to operate and since we transfer your luggage for you, take care of all the accommodation and bike details, you can leave all your worries behind on the pavement and simply focus on the ride ahead to fully soak up the delights of your chosen pocket of the United States or Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

what is a self-guided cycling trip.

Our wide range of self-guided itineraries across the USA and Canada have been designed to afford you as much freedom as possible to explore what interests you, at your own pace. We take care of the logistics: we supply you with lodgings in charming inns and B&B’s, mountain huts, and 2, 3 and 4-star hotels chosen for their location and local flavour; we provide route maps and information about sites you can visit; we generally include daily breakfast, packed lunches during remote hikes, and often dinner; we organise for your luggage to be transferred daily; on cycling trips we supply rental bikes – typically modern 21-speed bicycles, with the option to upgrade to electric-assisted (ebike) models.

? How fit do I have to be for a self-guided cycling trip?

Fitness is an important aspect of our trips, with each itinerary carefully-graded for ease of selecting the trip that best suits you. Detailed information, including suggested pre-trip training, can be found in the trip notes and pre-departure information. We recommend that you familiarise yourself with the physical requirements of your trip and speak to our staff if you have any questions. View our trip grading system for more detail as to how we grade the activity levels on our adventures and the suggested physical preparation.

? I’m a solo traveller, can I join a self-guided cycle tour?

On a number of our self-guided tours, transfer services are shared so you will meet others along the way and need only pay the cost of covering single room accommodations. On select self-guided tours which operate using private transfer services, we offer Solo Friendly departures; Solo travellers can sign up on these departure dates and we will match them up with other solo travellers. And, for those who are happy to go it alone, there is an option to pay a solo traveller supplement for private transfer services and accommodation throughout. Please check the trip notes or ask one of our agents for more details.

? Are tips included in my trip price?

Tips and gratuities are not included in the trip cost, unless listed under the trip-specific inclusions. Tipping is customary in the USA and Canada but is a completely personal thing. Guidelines are provided in our pre-departure information upon booking.

? What is included in my trip?

It is our aim to ensure that we incorporate as many inclusions as possible in your trip to minimise any out of pocket expenses while you are away. It is important that you refer to our trips notes for the exact inclusions. On most trips, all meals and arrangements are included from the start of the trip right through until the end.

? Do you have family friendly self-guided cycling trips?

Each family is unique in their interests, abilities, and composition. Many of our self-guided tours are appropriate for families with up to two or three children who are physically active and are experienced with the outdoors. Child discounts are listed, where this is possible given the exact tour itinerary and are generally based on a maximum of 2 children sharing a room with 2 full paying adults. Our guided, small group adventures are typically geared toward adult travellers, but we sometimes make exceptions for mature, exceptional children (12 and older) who are accompanied by an adult. Bottom line: Please ask! If our advertised itineraries and pricing do not suit your family, we are happy to customize a tour just for you.

? Can I bring my own bike?

You are welcome to bring your own bike, if you are up for the challenge of transporting it to your tour destination. If you choose to bring your own bike, be sure you notify us well in advance of your trip and we will let you know if any discounts are possible for that specific tour. We do recommend using the bicycles that are included in the tour package as they are good quality bicycles suited for the terrain on which you will be cycling. The majority of our bicycle rentals are replaced each season and we are always sure to tune them up between uses, so you can feel confident in their performance.

Discovery & Cruising

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity and are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures rarely involve camping.

Adventure Touring

These adventure tours may visit remote areas where facilities are often basic. Some of these trips involve camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will sometimes involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity.

These trips involve trekking or walking, cycling, or paddling for up to five or six hours a day at a slow but steady pace and should never be misinterpreted to mean they are easy trips. Hikes are mainly on well-defined trails with undulating terrain and cycling is on mostly flat surfaces.

These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity with some moderate components. Hiking trips typically require carrying a daypack only, but could involve carrying a pack of up to 20 pounds (9kg), depending on personal gear.

These adventures involve trekking, cycling, or paddling for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace. Many moderately graded hiking trips involve the carrying of a daypack only, though some may involve carrying a backpack of up to 30 pounds (14kg), depending on personal gear. Hikers should be prepared for plenty of roots, rocks, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and potential variable weather conditions. Cyclists should be prepared for undulating terrain and some steep hills.

Moderate to Challenging

These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity with some challenging components. Hikers should be prepared for very rugged off-trail hiking, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and to carry a pack weighing up 45 pounds (20kg), depending on personal gear.

Challenging

These adventures involve trekking, cycling or paddling in remote areas in variable weather conditions for up to 8 to 10 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions and altitude). Hikers should be prepared for very rugged off-trail hiking, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and to carry a pack weighing up to 45 pounds (20kg), depending on personal gear.

These journeys of discovery and cruises are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2-3 months prior to departure.

To enjoy these adventures, we suggest you are reasonably fit, healthy, have a moderately active lifestyle and have a positive attitude.

Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Our introductory trips are not ‘easy’ trips and you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: 30 minutes of aerobic exercise (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for 3 months leading up to your trip.

On these adventures you will need a good level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week from a minimum of 3 months leading up to your trip. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. For hiking trips, hill or stair walking with a 15lb daypack is highly recommended at least once per week.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week and extended periods of exercise during the weekend. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. For hiking trips, hill or stair walking with a full day pack is strongly recommended at least once per week (or a 30lb pack for backpacking trips).

These trips require an excellent level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic exercise, four to five times per week for three to six months leading up to departure. Hill walking with a full pack in variable weather conditions or on/off road cycling is essential.

On these adventures, you will need to be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions, have an excellent level of fitness and be in good health.

Since 2006, Bike Walk Connecticut has promoted the development of safe and connected biking and walking infrastructure, aiming to provide bike safety within the state.

The event will happen in collaboration with the Travelers Employee Cycling Network, which is a committed advocate for cycling initiatives that is recognized as a certified Bike Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists.

The tour will take place rain or shine. Helmets are required for bicycling routes, and food and entertainment will be provided as well.

According to a release from Bike Walk Connecticut, the ride provides participants with a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of the region. Cyclists participating in the tour will travel along a section of the 3,000-mile East Coast Greenway, which spans 200 miles through Connecticut.

Bike Walk Connecticut thanks Travelers for their support, which “underscores the importance of fostering bike-friendly environments” and promotes active transportation alternatives.

The ride will also commemorate Bike Walk Connecticut’s evolution from the Connecticut Bicycle Coalition to its current statewide focus. The release said that since April 2010, the organization has been at the center of promoting biking and walking initiatives and providing bike safety education across the state.

Cyclists of all skill levels are invited to participate in the community-building event.
