This initiative could transform the educational landscape of Birmingham.

Published on April 30, 2024 at 7:42 am CDT

alabama a&m college tour

In a move that can only be described as a masterstroke of strategic expansion, Alabama A&M University is poised to make a bold leap forward with plans to acquire the campus of the soon-to-be-closed Birmingham-Southern College (BSC). This initiative could transform the educational landscape of Birmingham, heralding a new era of opportunity and growth, as first reported by AL.com.

Shannon Reaves, the university’s Vice President of Governmental Affairs and External Relations, confirmed to AL.com that Alabama A&M is laying the groundwork to extend an offer for the campus. This proactive approach came right after BSC’s heart-wrenching announcement in March about its impending closure due to financial turmoil and the failure to secure a crucial loan from state lawmakers — a clear-cut case of institutional neglect leaving the college’s storied 168-year legacy hanging by a thread.

The response from BSC, communicated by Vice President for Advancement and Communications Virginia Loftin, indicates ongoing discussions with multiple parties interested in the campus. This could be seen as a beacon of hope for the college, desperately seeking a lifeline to preserve its history and community impact.

Reaves detailed that the discussions with BSC President Daniel Coleman were initiated immediately after the closure news broke, showcasing Alabama A&M’s swift and decisive action in the face of educational crisis. If the university’s offer is accepted, it would inaugurate  Alabama A&M University at Birmingham, marking a significant expansion and potentially the first public Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Birmingham.

The university isn’t just looking to take over; they’re planning to integrate some of BSC’s existing faculty and academic programs, enriching their already diverse offerings. This integration speaks volumes about Alabama A&M’s commitment to education and community continuity, rather than merely expanding their footprint.

Moreover, Alabama A&M’s recent growth to an all-time high enrollment of 6,600 students, with projections to exceed 7,000, underscores the soaring demand for its educational model. The potential acquisition could also alleviate some of the university’s current constraints, like student housing, highlighting the strategic foresight of Reaves and his team.

Reaves emphasized the historical and ongoing connection between Alabama A&M and Birmingham, noting that the city hosts the annual Magic City Classic football game, a staple event that underscores the university’s deep ties to the community. With 10% of its student body hailing from Birmingham, this expansion could further cement Alabama A&M’s role as a pivotal educational and cultural pillar in the region.

This strategic acquisition promises not only to preserve the legacy of Birmingham-Southern College but also to invigorate it with new energy and possibilities, ensuring that its historical significance continues to be celebrated and that its alumni remain an active part of the evolving story. This move by Alabama A&M could very well be a game-changer, injecting vitality into the surrounding neighborhoods and transforming the educational landscape of Birmingham.

Alabama A&M preparing to extend offer to buy Birmingham Southern College campus

NORMAL, Ala. ( WAFF ) - Officials with Alabama A&M University have confirmed that they are planning to extend an offer to purchase the campus of Birmingham Southern College.

This comes after the private liberal arts college announced that it would be closing its doors on May 31 after failing to obtain bridge funding from a $30 million state loan program.

Since the announcement, which was made to the community on March 26, numerous colleges across the state have offered transfer scholarships to current BSC students. One of those colleges is Alabama A&M University.

On Monday, a spokesperson with AAMU confirmed that if they are able to purchase the Birmingham campus, it would be named Alabama A&M University at Birmingham.

Although AAMU put their name in the hat for the campus, BSC officials say other “parties” have also shown interest.

“Birmingham-Southern College is having conversations with several interested parties about the sale of the campus,” said BSC Vice President for Advancement and Communications Virginia Loftin.

This is a developing story, this article will be updated as more information becomes available.

Alabama A&M University is eyeing a possible purchase of Birmingham-Southern College's campus.

An AAMU spokesperson told WVTM 13 News that school leaders are expected to submit an offer to buy BSC's campus.

The spokesperson said talks between AAMU and BSC had already taken place, and it will be up to the leadership boards of both universities to approve a deal if offered.

For years, there has been speculation of other institutions wanting to purchase the property and AAMU has been one of the names in the mix for some time.

"Alabama A&M could be a factor," said State Rep. Juandalynn Givan when she spoke to WVTM 13 about the school back in March. "I've talked with their president last year about it. Not as much this year. There have been some rumblings some of their alumni is very, very much interested."

BSC announced earlier this year that its doors are closing May 31 , after being unable to secure funding to continue operating.

“Birmingham-Southern College is having conversations with several interested parties about the sale of the campus,” said Virginia Loftin, BSC vice president for advancement and communications.

AAMU said if they were to purchase BSC, it could be named Alabama A&M University at Birmingham.

Alabama A&M wants to buy Birmingham-Southern College for new HBCU campus

A labama A&M University is planning to extend an offer to purchase the campus of Birmingham-Southern College and operate it as the Birmingham branch of the university, which is based in Huntsville.

Shannon Reaves, vice president of governmental affairs and external relations at Alabama A&M, said the university is conducting due diligence to prepare to extend an offer.

BSC, a private, liberal arts college with roots reaching back 168 years, announced in March that it would close May 31 after efforts to obtain a loan from the state Legislature failed.

BSC issued a brief statement Monday in response to a request for comment about Alabama A&M’s plans.

“Birmingham-Southern College is having conversations with several interested parties about the sale of the campus,” said Virginia Loftin, BSC vice president for advancement and communications.

Reaves said Alabama A&M began conversations with BSC President Daniel Coleman immediately after BSC announced it was closing. Reaves said that if things fall into place and an offer is accepted by the BSC Board of Trustees and approved by the A&M Board, the campus would become Alabama A&M University at Birmingham.

Reaves said Alabama A&M sent a team of leaders in academics, student affairs, facilities, and finance to the BSC campus a few weeks ago for due diligence.

“In the coming weeks we’re looking to make a formal offer to the board at Birmingham-Southern for consideration,” Reaves said.

Reaves said the goal would be to retain some of the BSC faculty and academic programs along with academic programs that A&M would bring.

Alabama A&M is seeking some state funding to help with the purchase, Reaves said. The Legislature is still working on the state education budget and related spending bills for the upcoming fiscal year.

Reaves said Alabama A&M is growing, with an all-time high enrollment of 6,600 and its largest ever freshman class of more than 2,100.

“Our numbers are up,” Reaves said. “Our concern is trying to house these students. We’re projected to go over 7,000 in the fall. So the demand for our academic offerings and what we’re doing at Alabama A&M, the demand for students is there.”

Reeves said the university has a strong relationship with Birmingham, home of the annual Magic City Classic football game between A&M and Alabama State University. Ten percent of A&M’s students are from Birmingham, he said, and Jefferson County has more A&M alumni than any other county, Reaves said.

An Alabama A&M campus would be important as the first public HBCU in Birmingham, Reaves said. Jefferson County is home to Miles College, a private HBCU located in Fairfield.

Miles College adjusted its application deadlines to accommodate BSC students after BSC announced it was closing. Miles College President Bobbie Knight said in late March the college had no formal plan to pursue that BSC campus but did not rule it out.

If Alabama A&M buys BSC, Reaves said the plan is to maintain ties to the alumni and long history of the college.

“We’re not going to come in and wipe away the legacy of Birmingham-Southern,” Reaves said “It will be well recognized. It is a part of the fabric of that community. So you want alums of Birmingham Southern to still come back annually and have class reunions and the like.”

BSC’s enrollment dropped below 700 this year amid doubts about the college being able to continue to operate. Reaves said he believes Alabama A&M could boost enrollment to 1,000 in a year and 3,500 after five years. He said he believes Alabama A&M could reinvigorate the surrounding neighborhoods as well as the 192-acre campus.

“Our plan is for it to be a full-service, robust opportunity where students can have a great four-year education and benefit from graduate programs that we have in Huntsville as well,” Reaves said.

Birmingham-Southern College traces its history to 1858. BSC formed from a 1918 merger of Southern University, dating to 1856, and Birmingham College, dating to 1898, both founded by the Methodist Church.

This is now back-to-back weeks that Alabama will face the nation's No. 1 team, but the benefit of playing in Tuscaloosa has been extremely important for the Crimson Tide as they have been much better at home than on the road. Alabama holds an 18-5 home record, but a 3-7 road record.

Pitcher Greg Farone will start Alabama's game on Thursday, followed by Ben Hess on Friday and Zane Adams to close out the series on Saturday.

Here's how to watch Alabama's weekend series against Texas A&M, including times and TV information:

Alabama Baseball Swept in Doubleheader by No. 1 Texas A&M, Dropping Series

Friday's doubleheader did not bring the desired result for the No. 18 Alabama baseball team.

  • Author: Will Miller

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.— No. 1 Texas A&M accomplished something No. 1 Arkansas couldn’t last weekend: it defeated No. 18 Alabama in a series at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Aggies won the first game of Friday's doubleheader 10-5 and doubled up the Crimson Tide in the second, triumphing by an 18-9 margin.

"Long day of baseball there," Alabama head coach Rob Vaughn said. "Those guys [Texas A&M] are good. That's a long lineup."

The first game started as well as the Crimson Tide could have hoped. Left-hander Greg Farone threw up four zeroes, and going into the top of the fifth, his team led 5-0. Gage Miller and Ian Petrutz each hit home runs. Farone surrendered two runs and got two outs in the top of the fifth before being lifted, but Texas A&M loaded the bases and left fielder Caden Sorrell hit a grand slam off Tyler Fay. The Aggies had taken a 6-5 lead. "It just wasn't T-Fay's day," said Vaughn. "We'll have him back ready to go for tomorrow." Farone had an extra day's rest after being moved up in the rotation.

Sorrell hit one more long ball in the game out of the number eight spot, but even more separation was created by his teammates. Including Sorrell’s two, A&M hit four as a team in the first game of the doubleheader. The sensational Braden Montgomery launched one that extended the lead to 8-5, his 21st of the season. He would add number 22 in the second game. Alabama couldn’t recover, not scoring a run after the fourth inning following a three-run third and two-run fourth. The Aggies won the game handily on the strength of their 10 unanswered runs despite being outhit 12-11. Crimson Tide center fielder TJ McCants went 4-4 in the first game with a pair of runs batted in.

The second game saw the home team fall into a deep hole early. Alabama starting pitcher Ben Hess cruised through the first inning, striking out the side, before a second-inning collapse for all intents and purposes placed the series firmly on ice. Between Hess and reliever Sam Mitchell, the Crimson Tide surrendered eight runs in the inning. Five of the runs went on Hess’ ledger, and before recording an out, he was struck on the lower leg by a comebacker. Mitchell was called upon to take the bump after him, giving up four hits and a base on balls before finally ending the frame.

Catcher Mac Guscette had yet to hit a home run all season until the bottom half of the inning, when the bases were loaded. He hit a ball just over the wall in left field to send them all home and halve the deficit in one shot. The Aggies (35-4, 13-4 SEC) took the momentum back from there on out, winning the game 18-9. Alabama had fought the deficit down to 13-7 at one point, and saw Guscette go 4-5 and shortstop Justin Lebron hit two home runs in the game (his seventh and eighth of the campaign), but it wasn't near enough. Vaughn added that Guscette's at-bats had improved since the Kentucky series, and that Lebron's success can be attributed to maturity.

The Aggies had three players with four runs batted in in the second game: Montgomery, star center fielder Jace LaViolette and designated hitter Hayden Schott. The visitors totaled 18 hits in the doubleheader's encore. "You think you get through the first three and you're like, 'Oh, thank goodness,'" Vaughn said. "There's not really a place to breathe in there, and you just have to execute pitches... If you don't, they control the strike zone at a really high level, they can do damage on the baseball." LaViolette and Montgomery hit second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, the leadoff man in Alabama's order, Miller, saw his on-base streak end at 37 games following his home run in the series opener. He has 16 big flies this season.

Vaughn thought his team showed fight where others might have phoned it in, such as in the second inning of game two when Alabama (24-15, 6-11 SEC) was down eight and its starter exited the game hurt. "We weren't good enough," he said, "All that matters is how we show up tomorrow... I thought they fought hard in that second game when a lot of teams wouldn't." He downplayed Thursday's weather postponement that led to the doubleheader, instead choosing to focus on the opportunity presented to win the series finale Saturday, which is set for noon CT. Zane Adams starts on the mound in his first appearance since posting eight shutout innings against Arkansas.

"The SEC's a whole other animal," he said. "In this league, what it's really about is the toughness and the grit that you can show throughout, when you are your back against the wall. That's what good teams do, they find a way to salvage the weekend."
