About This Performance

Born on the Eastern Cape of South Africa in 1992, Dominic Warren has spent his young life gathering musical experiences most young South Africans only dream of, commencing his vocal training as Head Chorister at Drakensberg Boys Choir, before continuing his training at Kearsney College and joining the prestigious South African Youth Choir. This culminated in Warren’s acute sense of musicality and a voice so warm, clear and mesmerizing that it was once described as “annoyingly good” .

Career highlights include sharing stages with Luciano Pavarotti, Joshua Bell and the Soweto String Quartet, performing for Bishop Desmond TuTu, Bono and Saul Kerzner and touring to every corner of the globe from China, Japan and Taiwan to Germany, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

As of 2018, Warren now puts his extraordinary voice to epic use, singing some of the hardest vocal parts ever written, in his starring role as Freddie Mercury in Showtime Australia’s long-running hit stage show Queen: It’s a Kinda Magic .

It’s been one year — as of Sept. 8 — that Queen Elizabeth died. As that one year anniversary is marked, we take a look back at Queen Elizabeth’s visits to Calgary and Alberta. She visited Calgary five times over the years.

Elizabeth’s inaugural visit to Canada occurred in 1951; she was still a princess at the time with the title of Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh. Her father, the king, wasn’t well at the time and so she visited Canada as his representative. A one-day visit to Calgary was included in the itinerary.

On Oct. 18, 1951, Princess Elizabeth arrived in Calgary. The city wanted to showcase its world-famous western hospitality and Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, so organizers planned a mini-Stampede event. She and husband Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh (who died April 9, 2021), toured an Indian Village on the Stampede grounds and then went to the Stampede Corral for a “chuckwagon luncheon,” featuring beef stew, baked beans and blueberry tarts. Some fancy dishes were served, too, at the royal table, including roast Hungarian partridges. A stage coach then took the royal couple to the Grandstand, where they watched a mini-Stampede performance . It wasn’t exactly a warm October day. With the temperature hovering around 7 C, and a few snowflakes falling, their Royal Highnesses stayed warm with blankets. By late afternoon, the couple was taken to the CPR station and headed west on their tour by rail.

This year saw the Queen undertake a large tour, in which she made a stop in each of Canada’s provinces and territories. She opened the St. Lawrence Seaway, along with American president Dwight Eisenhower. That event became her first live appearance on Canadian TV. Once the royal tour was finished, it was revealed that the Queen had been pregnant with her third child at the time. The tour included a stop in Calgary and other parts of Alberta.

In July 1973, Queen Elizabeth visited Alberta and Saskatchewan in honour of the RCMP’s centennial. Duties included opening a new RCMP museum in Regina and officially opening the Calgary Stampede.

In June 1990, Queen Elizabeth began a five-day Canadian tour in Calgary. It was one of the rare trips on which her husband, Prince Philip, didn’t accompany her. A key part of her visit to the city included the inauguration of the Spruce Meadows show-jumping event that carries her name — the Queen Elizabeth II Cup.

The Queen visited Calgary and Alberta in 2005 in celebration of the province’s centennial. An entertainment gala occurred at the Saddledome and a large concert took place at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. The Provincial Museum of Alberta was redesignated the Royal Alberta Museum at the time, and Queen Elizabeth also became the first reigning monarch to address Alberta’s Legislative Assembly.

My mother was born in England, so it was imperative that I try to see her when she came to Spruce Meadows in 1990. Better than that, I was able to be part of the color guard as she toured the grounds. I had my horse and I dressed in hot pink and black. She noticed me and pointed me out to the lady sitting beside her. I excitedly waved back at her, to which I was told later that was a big Nono… May she Rest In Peace as she certainly has served her country.— Elizabeth Hennessy You taught me grace and dignity. I so admire your love for animals and your grandchildren. I was so fortunate to be hired as a printer for a photographer in Charlotte Town PEI when the Britannia came with Lady Di and Prince Charles. I was so busy 1000’s of prints. I will never forget that experience. Another great memory was my mothers scrapbooks of the Royal Family. She collected so many pictures and perfectly cut them out and post them in her books. My mom so loved the Royals. We used to have so many souvenirs that both her mom and she used to collect together. It was one of their bonds to share time and love with each other.— Denise Rackett She was the definition of dignity, I had the great honour of meeting her.— Rick Valiquette

Queen Elizabeth II visited Alberta 6 times in her life

The Queen has died at the age of 96. Most Canadians have never known a world in which she wasn’t the official head of state.

Queen Elizabeth II visited Alberta six times over the course of 54 years, with her first visit coming before she became monarch.

Her inaugural visit to Canada was made while she was still Princess Elizabeth. She and her new husband Prince Philip made a coast-to-coast tour of the country.

Princess Elizabeth’s first trip to Alberta was 111 days before she became Queen. The Calgary Stampede put on a special fall edition of the show just for the princess and she would go on to visit three more Stampedes over the decades.

She also visited Edmonton for one day during that 33-day tour across Canada. More than 160,000 people lined the streets to see the Royal couple make a 32-kilometre procession through the Alberta capital.

It was during that trip when Portage Avenue from 101 Street to Kingsway would be paved and renamed Princess Elizabeth Avenue in honour of the visit.

Earlier in 1939, the thoroughfare was dubbed Kingsway in honour of the visit by her father, King George VI.

During the 1951 visit, the Royal couple was greeted at Alberta Legislature by Premier Ernest Manning and gifted a polar bear fur rug. The couple also attended Col. Mewburn Pavillion of University Hospital to visit with veterans, then on to the Imperial Refinery — now called Strathcona Refinery — for tea.

A state dinner hosted by the provincial government was held at the Hotel Macdonald. The couple also watched a CFL game, in which Edmonton beat Winnipeg 4-1 in the western semifinal, before leaving the city.

The Queen with Prince Philip made a six-week tour of all provinces and territories. The tour lasted 45 days and included 90 stops .

Upon arrival in Calgary on July 9, Her Majesty and Prince Philip attended the Calgary Stampede. They watched chuckwagon races and attended a barbecue.

In a replica First Nations village, the Queen and her husband briefly spoke with Chief Walking Buffalo of the Stoney-Nakoda First Nation and then spent time meeting other Indigenous Albertans.

The next day, the Royal couple boarded a train to Banff and Lake Louise, before carrying on to the west coast and northern territories.

When they arrived in Whitehorse, the couple spilt up for that portion of the tour because the Queen became ill and cancelled her engagements for the next two days. During that time, Prince Philip visited Yellowknife and other places in the Northwest Territories, as well as a gold and uranium mines in far northern Saskatchewan. Her Majesty flew straight to Edmonton on her own and her husband later joined her there.

The Queen returned to her official duties in Edmonton, where some 200,000 people gathered on the streets to greet her. Her Edmonton stop included the opening of Coronation Park. After that, the Royals started to head back to central and eastern Canada for the final legs of the tour, boarding a train that took them through Wainwright and on to Saskatchewan.

The Queen and Prince Philip visited Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan and Alberta. They marked the RCMP centennial, the centennial of P.E.I. joining Confederation and the tercentennial of Kingston, Ont.

During her stop in the province, Queen Elizabeth had dinner with Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel in downtown Calgary. She also attended the Calgary Stampede.

The Queen and Prince Philip, along with their sons Edward and Andrew, visited Newfoundland, Saskatchewan and Alberta, where they opened and attended the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. Commonwealth Stadium was built specifically for the event.

The Royal Family attended a banquet hosted by Premier Peter Lougheed, during which the Queen gave a televised national address about the importance of a unified Canada.

The premier agreed with the Queen while emphasizing the strength and success of Alberta and the west.

At this time in history, the province was engaged in an “energy war” with the federal government over the several policies enacted by then Premier Pierre Trudeau, which some say ended up causing great economic hardship in Alberta and led to a rift between the east and west.

During that same visit, the Queen visited the Alberta Legislature, placed a wreath at the Cenotaph and greeted people at Churchill Square before opening the Commonwealth Games. During that trip she also visited the University of Alberta, Kinsmen Aquatic Centre and the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

The Queen returned to Alberta, visiting Red Deer and Calgary for four days before stopping in Ottawa for Canada Day festivities in 1990.

She visited Spruce Meadows with Premier Don Getty and his wife Margaret, inaugurating the Queen Elizabeth II Cup equestrian competition that has been held every year since.

Her Majesty also opened the Museum of the Regiments at Canadian Forces Base Calgary, went to McMahon Stadium and spoke at a luncheon. She opened the new pediatric ward at the Red Deer Hospital during that trip.

The Queen and Prince Philip embarked upon a nine-day tour of Saskatchewan and Alberta to celebrate both provinces’ centennials. The trip was characterized by torrents of rain at nearly every stop.

She began in Edmonton by returning to Commonwealth Stadium on Victoria Day but relentless rainfall put a damper on the day, causing many acts to cancel.

She also once again vested the legislature with Premier Ralph Klein. The Queen addressed Alberta in the legislature for the first time in the province’s history.

The Queen cut a cake of the legislature made by NAIT students and during this trip two Alberta landmarks were renamed in honor of Her Majesty: Highway 2 became Queen Elizabeth II Highway (the QEII), and the Provincial Museum of Alberta became the Royal Alberta Museum.

During this trip, she was also taken on a helicopter tour of the oilsands.

In Calgary, the city’s famous tower was lit as she went to a lunch hosted by the premier, before attending a centennial celebration at the Saddledome with 17,000 spectators.

That 2005 trip was the last time the monarch visited Alberta, although she did return to Canada one more time in 2010 for a nine-day tour of Halifax, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Toronto, and Waterloo, Ont.

‘The most fun you can have with your boots on’ – how Calgary made a cowboy out of a future king

From its world-class rodeo to its buzzing grassroots music scene, this Canadian city can make anyone go country – even the Royal family

Charles and Andrew

What do Tony Blair, Yellowstone star Kevin Costner and the Royal family have in common? They’re all staring back at me, a cowboy hat on their head or in hand. I’m at the historic cowboy hatter Smithbilt in Calgary, Canada, an energy sector-fuelled city of 1.4 million famed for its cowboy roots, and the boot-stomping, liquid courage-fuelled rodeo and music festival it throws each July to celebrate them. When foreign dignitaries come to town, it’s customary to “white hat” them. Which brings me to Smithbilt, the milliner credited with inventing the city’s iconic white brim in 1946.

As I take in this unlikely crew of actors, politicians and even an astronaut pictured on their wall of fame, master hatter Cody Harrison, a soft-spoken but solid gentleman who says things like “fer sure” and lights cowboy hats on fire (more on that in a moment), regales me with tales of Smithbilt past.

Smithbilt's wall of fame

“Pretty much any western film shot in Canada got their hats from us,” he says matter of factly. This includes Legends of the Fall , almost every season of Fargo and even HBO’s apocalyptic thriller The Last of Us (all of which were filmed locally).

But I, as a born-and-raised Calgarian living in London, am curious about the city’s royal connections. You see, for people of such polite society, they seem to be quite fond of Calgary – a salt-of-the-earth prairie city built by hardy pioneers and raised-on-the-land indigenous nations, where the royal treatment looks less like white linens and fine china and more like showing visitors how to let their hair down and yeehaw.

A rodeo rider at the 2015 Calgary Stampede rodeo

Harrison brings my attention to a photo of Prince Philip in a white hat from July 1959. He and Queen Elizabeth were in town to kick off the Stampede, and though she wasn’t tempted to top her pristine floral dress with a white Smithbilt, Philip soon got into the swing of things, sitting in the front row at the rodeo looking like a Savile Row-suited John Wayne . Afterwards, in the backyard of a local judge’s home, a menu of absolute culinary refinement awaited them: barbeque prime rib, buttered buns and western-style beans. Coffee if you drank it. Mints for dessert.

On this day in 1959: Queen Elizabeth takes in Calgary Stampede, Prince Philip wears cowboy hat http://t.co/yvIYVUy5yF pic.twitter.com/qcWxLTuX6n — CBC Archives (@cbc_archives) July 9, 2014

Informal as it may have been, it seems likely that the young couple rated their experience in the unpretentious city. Two of their sons, the now-King Charles and now-disgraced Andrew went on to visit in 1977, their eyes glinting with mischief as they peered up from beneath the brims of their white cowboy hats.

Prince Andrew and then-Prince Charles at the Stampede in 1977

On their first royal tour as husband and wife in 2011, the now-Prince and Princess of Wales visited Calgary, both cutting youthful, strong, ready-to-work-on-the-farm figures in their cowboy duds. And on a more controversial occasion, Prince Harry sauntered into town in 2007 with military colleagues in tow and visited locally notorious nightclub Cowboys – its slogan: “The most fun you can have with your boots on”.

prince and princess of wales

With direct flights from Heathrow, Calgary is a breeze to access. However, visitors often overlook the city as a mere stopover on the way to nearby Banff and Lake Louise . But with its buzzing live music venues, the best barbecue this side of Texas and locals so friendly you have to assume it’s because of all the fresh air they’re breathing, it’s worth stopping in for a day or two en route to the mountains.

Don’t get me wrong – Calgary isn’t some rinky-dink western frontier town. It’s a multicultural modern city with hipster coffee shops and small-plate restaurants, just like the rest of them. But don’t be surprised if you catch a few pairs of heeled boots poking out from the suits you see walking among the skyscrapers. It’s nicknamed “Cowtown” for a reason.

Regardless of whether you come for the Stampede rodeo in July or a shoulder-season jaunt, here’s how to unleash your inner cowboy or girl in Calgary – and where to find the best spots to get the Royal treatment.

Calgary’s crowning glories

Smithbilt hats.

Nestled inside an old-school grain elevator on the edge of Downtown, the walls at Smithbilt are lined floor to ceiling with felt hats of every shape and colour, available for you either to stick on your head and walk out, or customise to your heart’s content.

smithbilt

Harrison tells me that Smithbilt made several different hats for the Prince and Princess of Wales each when they came to town, to ensure they got the perfect fit. To get mine, he brings out what looks like a medieval torture device but assures me is actually a hat mould. I’m not convinced.

A traditional hat mould in use at Smithbilt

“Lock and Co in London, the oldest hat shop in the world, would use one like this,” he says, before encasing my head within its weighty frame. Hey presto, the steampunk gears have replicated the exact contours of my dome. Harrison then uses that template to steam a white hat to my personal specifications – I own a few cowboy hats and none fit as luxuriously as this.

Laura Robinson in a Smithbilt cowboy hat

If you fancy crowning yourself western royalty, it’s worth checking out Smithbilt’s behind-the-scenes tour while you’re at it. The pre-American Civil War equipment they still use to this day will appeal to the history buffs, the extensive list of films they’ve outfitted will appeal to the cinephiles, and the part where Harrison sprays alcohol on a hat to light it ablaze and burn off any stray hairs will appeal to any pyromaniacs in the crowd.

Alberta Boot Company

Naturally, you’ll need the boots to match the hat. Trust me when I say there is no sartorial combination more cringe-worthy in a Calgarian’s eyes than someone wearing a cowboy hat with trainers, a combination as awkward as the monarchy and Montecito.

A cherry red pair of boots from Alberta Boot Company

Instead, follow in royal footsteps and head to the company that carefully crafted boots for King Charles, Prince William and the Princess of Wales during their visits. “Their staff sent over their measurements and the stitching patterns they liked – Kate requested tall boots,” Federica Fiorotto, the marketing manager at Alberta Boot Company, tells me. Prince William’s were an exotic kangaroo and ostrich pair.

Boots being made at Alberta Boot Company's workshop

The elegant Downtown showroom and factory smells deliciously of leather and hums with the whizzes and bangs of the 19th-century machinery still used today. A custom pair will set you back at least $725 (£426), but they’ll last a lifetime – and you’ll stand out wearing your bona fide pair on a sidewalk crawling with trend-led versions from the high street. Plus, western fashion is trending to boot .

When all that shopping makes you hungry, the nearby Palomino Smokehouse is the answer. A bar serving up succulent beef brisket alongside live music, the Palomino is a Calgarian institution.

The Palomino Smokehouse

Don’t miss the corn fritters and burnt ends (the crispy bits of the brisket tossed in a Jack Daniels barbecue sauce) and if you’re famished, they’ve got a “Fat Ass platter”, a bit of everything from their grill and smoker gloriously arranged with classic barbecue sides like bacon-wrapped corn and Kentucky bourbon apples. Something tells me the Royals didn’t eat here. But they probably wanted to.

Caesar’s Steakhouse

If you walked into Caesar’s at noon in the 1970s, you’d see dark wood panelling, cherry red leather seats and suits doing business over martini lunches. Gaudy? Absolutely. Delightfully so. Today, the servers wear bow ties instead of togas like they used to (yes, really), but the juicy Alberta beef steaks are still cooked over an open-flame grill shaped like a Roman column.

caesar's steakhouse

Despite its name, the restaurant neither invented the Caesar salad nor the Caesar cocktail, but they serve up a mean version of both. The salad is theatrically prepared tableside while the cocktail is a Calgary-invented melange of Clamato juice, Worcestershire sauce and vodka or gin. Best drunk as a hair-of-the-dog hangover cure, but delicious any time of day.

Often referred to as “Nashville North”, Calgary’s lively music scene has been ramping up in recent years. There’s no better way to take it in than a crawl down the Music Mile, a stretch of live music venues starting from the Blues Can – a rollicking blues bar housed inside of a cavernous metal shack – to the horizon-dominating National Music Centre, a world-class piece of architecture that is home toCanada’s Music Hall of Fame.

Cap it all off with a drink at the King Eddy, a former railway hotel built in 1905 that’s seen many lives: once as a legendary blues bar hosting the likes of Buddy Guy, then low-rent housing and finally disassembled and rebuilt brick by brick by the National Music Centre as a hub for gigging musicians. With not much more than a spotlight and a microphone, the intimate stage lends itself to seriously raw performances.

At Tampa concert, Madonna reminds us why she’s the queen

  • Maggie Duffy Times staff

TAMPA — She kept us waiting for hours in Amalie Arena.

But once Madonna took the stage a full two hours past the scheduled start of the 8:30 p.m. show, that didn’t matter. For the next two hours, the Queen of Pop showed us why she owns the title, and the multi-generational crowd gave back just as much energy.

DJ Mary Mac 5 Star set the vibe with a lively set. Then Bob the Drag Queen, dressed up like Marie Antoinette, got the crowd even more hyped as he introduced Madonna.

The singer’s Celebration Tour includes hits from the past four decades — the entirety of Madonna’s career — and features a troupe of dancers surrounding Madonna and working the stage, which had a long runway and elements suspended from the ceiling. Screens flashed video montages of photographs, artwork, scenes of New York City.

The tour was postponed last summer after Madonna suffered a severe bacterial infection that led to her being in a medically-induced coma for 48 hours . It’s pretty impressive that she’s bounced back relatively quickly.

After performing “Nothing Really Matters” — a song about how having children changed her life — alone on the stage, she was joined by dancers dressed as early 1980s punks for “Everybody” and “Into the Groove.”

Next, Madge grabbed an electric guitar and took us back to the iconic New York City punk club CBGB, where she first performed “Burning Up.”

Then she addressed the audience, saying that the show was the story of her life and she wanted us to “feel all the feels.”

“And really, Tampa, I’m only here every 40 years, so you should appreciate it,” she said, referring to the fact that she’s only performed here once before, in 1985.

She was accompanied by a person wearing a blank face mask throughout the show, who represented a younger version of herself that has stuck with her through the years. She gave herself a hug and reminded us to not forget where we came from.

“This isn’t a pop show, it’s more of a retrospective,” she said. “It’s performance art.”

Indeed. During “Open Your Heart,” there were nods to the memorable music video featuring a peepshow, and “Holiday” took us to a New York City nightclub, where the party reached a dizzying height, then took a heartbreaking turn as dancers started to fall to the ground. The refrain “Holiday” repeated as a haunting echo.

This led to a segment honoring those who were lost to AIDS, accompanied by a montage of their photographs while she performed “Live to Tell.” It began with a photo of former Tampa Bay resident Martin Burgoyne .

The segment culminated with an emotional “Like a Prayer,” with dancers’ bodies morphing into poses of Jesus Christ during crucifixion and other feats of physicality. There was a nod to Prince — who had played guitar on the original track — with a guitarist wearing a purple-patterned suit and a sample of the spoken intro of “Let’s Go Crazy.”

Madonna has always been a strong and vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, and this concert was a big kiss to it. Ballroom culture was celebrated in a joyful segment during “Vogue,” which featured her daughter Estere as the DJ. Dancers walked the runway

to be judged by Madonna and guest Monét X Change.

It wouldn’t be Madonna if there wasn’t a steamy sexual element, and that came with sensual choreography on “Erotica,” “Justify My Love” and “Hung Up,” then turned almost remorseful with “Bad Girl,” on which her daughter Mercy played the piano.

Things took a tender turn with “Mother and Father,” which she dedicated to her mother, who died when she was very young. A photo of her was on a screen, as was the photo of her adopted son David’s mother, who died in childbirth. David also accompanied on guitar.

Among her many costume changes, Madonna went Western chic and played “Express Yourself” on her guitar, which she slung over her back for “La Isla Bonita.” She donned a silver bodysuit and long pink wig as she flew over the stage in a square for “Ray of Light.”

A dedication to Michael Jackson came with a “Billie Jean” / “Like a Virgin” mashup, with dancers dressed like the duo silhouetted on a screen.

Madonna has dealt with the pressures of celebrity’s obsession with youth, which is alluded to with sound bites of her saying “To age is a sin” and “The most controversial thing I’ve ever done is to stick around.” People may expect her, at age 65, to act or dress a certain way. But instead, she reminds us what a trailblazer she is during “B---- I’m Madonna,” with dancers dressed in her most iconic looks through the years.

Whatever you do, don’t expect Madonna to stop.
