Arsenal pre-season 2023/24: Fixtures and schedule

  • Arsenal face Man Utd and Barcelona in US
  • New signings Rice, Havertz and Timber included in touring squad
  • Gunners also take on MLS All-Stars in Washington DC

By Euan Burns | Jul 24, 2023, 2:15 PM GMT+1

Summer arrival Declan Rice has featured in pre-season

Having reached new heights in the Premier League in 2022/23, Arsenal will soon start their preparations for the new campaign with a pre-season tour to get ready for 2023/24.

After exceeding expectations and then some last time out, a huge summer beckons for Mikel Arteta, whose side will now be expected to build on the strong foundations that almost culminated in Premier League glory.

The club have major ambitions in the transfer market and the Arsenal squad already looks a lot different thanks to the arrivals of fresh talent.

Here's what we know about Arsenal 's pre-season plans.

Where are Arsenal going for 2023/24 pre-season?

Arsenal FC v MLS All-Stars - 2023 MLS All-Star Game

Arsenal began their pre-season spell with a 1-1 draw with Nurnberg in Germany, Bukayo Saka the Gunners' strike early on. They then jetted over to the Untied States, first thrashing an MLS All-Stars coached by Manchester United and England legend Wayne Rooney in Washington D.C.

Strikes from Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard had Arsenal 2-0 up midway through the first half and a penalty from Jorginho coupled with late efforts from Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz saw Mikel Arteta's side win 5-0 .

The Gunners then travelled to New Jersey to face English rivals Manchester United for the first time on American soil. A fiery affair was settled by strikes from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho, the Red Devils winning 2-0 .

Their tour concludes on the opposite side of the country in Los Angeles as they face La Liga champions Barcelona at the SoFi Stadium, home of Stan Kroenke's Rams.

The club's busy summer schedule continues back home upon their return as they face AS Monaco in the first-ever midweek Emirates Cup clash. Arsenal's inclusion in the 2023 Community Shield forced the rescheduling. Arteta's men face Manchester City in the unofficial new season curtain raiser at Wembley a week before their Premier League campaign gets underway.

Arsenal cope with gruelling heat in Shanghai as preseason tour hits China

arsenal tour asia

SHANGHAI -- Arsenal were doing double training sessions in sweltering heat in Shanghai on Monday for a sweaty start to the China leg of their preseason tour.

Arsene Wenger's side arrived in Shanghai late on Sunday after a 10-hour flight from Sydney, ahead of playing Bayern Munich on Wednesday before flying to Beijing for a friendly against Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Despite the scorching temperatures in the city, which were set to reach 35 degrees Celsius during the day, Wenger seemed intent on making the most of the trip by immediately putting his players through gruelling morning and afternoon sessions.

It left the Arsenal squad looking for some inventive ways to cool off, with Theo Walcott posting a picture of himself taking a bath in what looked like a rubbish bin.

The club's photographer also posted photos showing the players being put through their paces in the sweltering temperatures.

Wednesday's game will offer Arsenal a chance to get a measure of redemption for the dual 5-1 defeats to Bayern in the Champions League round of 16 last season -- losses that helped derail their campaign in February and March.

But the intense training programme showed Wenger is more concerned with getting his players in shape for the new season, though Arsenal are still expected to field a fairly strong lineup against Bayern.

Arsenal are coming off a week of playing and training in cooler temperatures in Australia, but will face similar heat in Beijing where temperatures are also expected to hover around the 35 degree Celsius mark.

Wenger and Bayern manager Carlo Ancelotti are set to face the media on Tuesday, when Alexis Sanchez will likely be one of the main topics again after he was linked with a move to Bayern earlier this summer.

Arsenal players also took time to entertain local fans on Monday, with some evening sightseeing on the schedule as well.

Arsenal's 2024/25 pre-season destination - revealed

  • Arsenal will travel to the USA for 2024/25 pre-season tour
  • Dates and fixtures yet to be confirmed
  • The Gunners to play high-profile friendlies at the SoFi Stadium

Arsenal F.C. v Manchester United

Arsenal are gearing up for a return to the United States next summer as part of their pre-season preparations for the 2024/25 campaign.

Although specific details such as opponents, venues, and the schedule of friendlies remain uncertain at this stage, the club is anticipated to feature in a match at the KSE-owned SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

Despite the challenges posed by the pitch, which received criticism for its condition, the Gunners secured a 5-3 victory over Barcelona at the venue last summer. Arsenal aims to further solidify their presence and support among local soccer enthusiasts.

With the 2024 Copa America, hosted by the US, and EURO 2024 both concluding on 14 July and the 2024/25 Premier League season commencing on 17 August, it’s speculated that Arsenal will plan their US friendlies for the final week of July and the onset of August, slightly later than their previous tour.

The United States stands as a highly profitable market for English clubs, evident from the nine Premier League sides that visited last July. Additionally, the presence of global football icon Lionel Messi in Major League Soccer (MLS) further accentuates the strategic advantage of capitalising on the post-Copa America buzz.

The tour not only presents an opportunity for sporting engagements but also serves as a platform for retail opportunities, with hopes for an improved lineup of club merchandise.

Arsenal CEO, Vinai Venkatesham previously elucidated the club's enthusiasm for visiting the USA during an appearance on Bloomberg's 'Surveillance' show last summer.

He highlighted the burgeoning popularity of Arsenal within the American market, citing record-breaking viewership on NBC Sports during the Arsenal versus Manchester United clash, substantial social media growth, and a significant portion of retail business originating from the US.

Moreover, Venkatesham noted the overwhelming presence of Arsenal supporters at the jam-packed MLS All-Star game in Washington, signifying the club's escalating influence.

Recent milestones, including Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Liverpool at Anfield in December, have further substantiated the club's growing viewership in the US, setting a new NBC viewership record with 1.96 million tuning in.

Arsenal back to Asia

As far as I know, I’m the only Gooner mad NK tour operator, although I might be wrong. Well current rumours are that Arsenal are planning 3 Asian matches, Hong Kong, Seoul, and against Man City in Beijing. Last year we managed to get 10 tickets for the Maidstone Arsenal supporters club, and with us hopefully having advance warning this year, we are looking at opportunities to get a bit more involved this year, and even hopefully tying it in with our football tour to the DPRK…early stages, but hopeful…

LONDON: One fixture lurking like a troll in Arsenal's Premier League title run-in has probably consumed the thoughts of the club's fans more than any other - Sunday's (Apr 28) short trip down the road to arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Like all big city derbies, pride and bragging rights are always huge motivating factors, but the fact this one arrives with Arsenal glimpsing a first title for 20 years adds considerably more spice to the occasion.

It looks the toughest of Arsenal's final four games but they will head to Tottenham with confidence brimming after Tuesday's 5-0 mauling of Chelsea lifted them three points clear of Liverpool whose own title ambitions suffered a huge blow in defeat by Everton on Wednesday.

Manchester City, who are four points back with two games in hand ahead of their trip to Brighton and Hove Albion later on Thursday, remain slight favourites to claim an unprecedented fourth successive English crown.

But unlike last season when Arsenal collapsed down the home stretch, this time they seem capable of lasting the distance.

It is a long time since Arsenal faced their arch-rivals in such a position and probably the last occasion in which either had serious title chances by the time of their second meeting of the season was in 2016.

On that occasion it was Tottenham eyeing a long-awaited title but a 2-2 home draw damaged those ambitions and Leicester City went on a fairytale run to glory.

Arsenal re-established superiority over Tottenham last season when they were runners-up behind City, ending a streak of six seasons finishing below Tottenham in the league.

While Tottenham have shown an improvement in an encouraging first season under Ange Postecoglou and had marginally the better of a 2-2 draw at The Emirates in September, Arsenal have moved to another level entirely.

Declan Rice has given their midfield a new dimension, captain Martin Odegaard gets better and better and Kai Havertz, who looked like an expensive misfit earlier in the season, is now flourishing in a free-scoring frontline that will be salivating at the prospect of facing Tottenham's leaky defence.

For all Tottenham's eye-catching football, they have conceded 49 goals - the last four coming in a shambolic 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United in their last game.

In stark contrast Arsenal have kept six successive clean sheets on the road and another at Tottenham would equal a Premier League record shared by Chelsea and Manchester United.

Last season Arsenal won 2-0 at Tottenham but never in their history have they kept successive league clean sheets away to their neighbours.

Fifth-placed Tottenham's hopes of finishing in the top-four and returning to the Champions League hang by a thread and defeat on Sunday could end any realistic hopes they have, especially if fourth-placed Aston Villa beat Chelsea on Saturday and move nine points clear.

Irrespective of form and league positions, however, a well-rested Tottenham will be desperate to sabotage Arsenal's quest for glory on Sunday and are quite capable of doing so.

Liverpool kick off the weekend action at West Ham United when anything other than victory could all but end their hopes of winning the title in Juergen Klopp's farewell season.

Manchester City conclude the programme with an away trip to Nottingham Forest, by which time the title scenarios may well have become a little clearer.

At the other end of the table, Sheffield United will be relegated if they lose to Newcastle United while Luton Town have an opportunity to move out of the bottom three when they visit Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

ASIA Announces 'The Heat Of The Moment' July 2024 U.S. Tour

ASIA has announced "The Heat of The Moment Tour" , headlined by ASIA and also featuring FOCUS , Martin Turner (ex- WISHBONE ASH ) and CURVED AIR and MC'd by artist Roger Dean .

The trek will commence on July 3, 2024 and will incorporate 21 dates across the USA and Canada.

The tour has been masterminded by rock music keyboard legend and original ASIA member Geoff Downes ( BUGGLES , YES ).

"Asia" was the biggest selling album of 1982, No. 1 on Billboard for nine weeks and pioneers of the MTV era. Downes 's brand new iteration of ASIA first began to evolve last summer at the concert held in memory of late lead singer, songwriter and bassist John Wetton ( KING CRIMSON , ROXY MUSIC , URIAH HEEP , WISHBONE ASH , UK , ASIA , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ). Downes invited old friend John Mitchell ( IT BITES , FROST, LONELY ROBOT , KINO , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ) and newcomer Harry Whitley to join him on stage to celebrate Wetton 's life by performing some of the classic ASIA hits. Such was the uproarious reception to their set, that Downes wondered if something magical was beginning to take shape.

"And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much ASIA 's music belongs on the stage," Geoff said. "The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling."

Downes 's new-look ASIA will once again feature Mitchell on guitars and Whitley on lead vocal and bass. The quartet will be made complete by the addition of Virgil Donati ( UK , SOUTHERN SONS , STEVE VAI , ALLAN HOLDSWORTH ) on drums.

Downes continues: "With the addition of Virgil Donati and John Mitchell , two of the finest musicians in the world in their respective classes, this is almost going full circle bearing in mind their previous close collaborations with John W . Completing this circle is also the amazing Harry Whitley who absolutely floored the audience with his incredible vocal interpretation of the ASIA songs that John W and I so lovingly wrote over the years."

The tour will also feature sets from other classic acts FOCUS , Turner and CURVED AIR . All three support acts boast their founder bandleaders and have deservedly attained the status of legend.

FOCUS will release a brand new studio album later in 2024. Led by the indomitable Sir Thijs Van Leer , it features original 1970s drummer Pierre Van Der Linden , plus the virtuoso talents of Menno Gootjes on guitar and Udo Pannekeet on bass.

Martin Turner was lead vocalist, bassist, founding member and creative force behind 1970s rock music behemoth WISHBONE ASH , best known for such classic albums as "Argus" and "Pilgrimage" .

Formed in 1970, CURVED AIR are one of the founders of progressive rock and a retrospective collection of their most influential and ground-breaking material is currently in the planning stages. Sonja Kristina (vocals) and Kirby Gregory (guitar) will treat audiences to an acoustic set featuring some of the band's most memorable musical moments. They will be joined by violinist Grzegorz Gadziomski .

Each performance on the tour will be MC'd by legendary artist Roger Dean . For so many, Dean 's artwork is synonymous with the music of the time and stands to represent the very best of British rock music.

The final word goes to Geoff Downes : "I am convinced that John 's [ Wetton ] spirit is with us as we set out on this new adventure. After all, it is the Year Of The Dragon — just as it was in 1982, when we released our first ASIA album. It's as though it was meant to be. Looking forward to seeing you there, my friends — bring it on!”

Asia Announces The Heat Of The Moment Tour in 2024

E nglish rockers Asia are getting the gang back together (with some new faces) for a summer tour of the US and Canada! According to a press release for the tour, OG Asia member Geoff Downes “masterminded” the tour after the successful reunion concert held in memory of the band’s late singer and bassist John Wetton.

“And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much Asia’s music belongs on the stage,” said Downes. “The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling.”

The tour will feature Downes, John Mitchell on guitar, Harry Whitley on vocals and bass, and Virgil Donati on drums. The band will bring along some killer supporting acts as well, including Focus, Curved Air, and Martin Turner.

The Asia 2024 Tour will begin on July 3 at Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The tour will close on July 31 at The Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The presale event for this tour will begin on April 24 at 10:00 am local over at Ticketmaster and will include VIP packages. General on-sale will begin on April 26 at 10:00 am local.
