Your baby should sleep in a cot or crib in the same room as you for the first six months of their life, however, if you don't have the space for a big cot in your room, the best Moses baskets are a great alternative.
Designed to be smaller than your standard baby beds, Moses baskets are practical beds that don't take up much room in your home and can be used in your bedroom or in the living room for daytime naps. They're also suitable baby beds to travel with if you need to.
Best Moses baskets at a glance:
• Best overall Moses basket: Tommee Tippee Sleepee Moses basket - buy here on Amazon UK . • Best innovative Moses basket: SnuzBaskit Dark Grey Moses Basket And Dove Stand - buy here from SNUZ . • Best for additional features: John Lewis ANYDAY Moses Basket - buy here from John Lewis .
Moses baskets are designed for use from birth until around six months, after which your baby can move into a cot in a room of their own. Some people also like to have a Moses basket in the living room, so that they don't have to keep taking baby to their room for a nap, or have to move their bedside crib around the house.
1. Tommee Tippee Sleepee Moses Basket And Rocking Stand
Best overall moses basket.
Rrp: £ 99.99
Description
Shortlisted in the 2022 Mother&Baby Awards Best Cot , Crib or Moses Basket category.
This modern, durable Moses basket is made from soft hypoallergenic and recyclable material that is BPA and phthalate-free. It's well-ventilated and really easy to clean. Strong integrated handles make it easy to lift and move from to room, and it's ideal for overnight trips away from home as it's so light.
It comes supplied with a mattress and 100 per cent pure cotton waffle liner and includes the Rocking Stand. You can buy the Moses basket separately without the stand, but this bundle saves you money on both.
Our mum tester Verity said: "This is similar in appearance to the Shnuggle but even more futuristic. It has lots of similar features: it's hypoallergenic, easy to clean and well-ventilated. There is plenty of room to grow lengthwise and probably a few more months of use width-ways. The plastic is semi-flexible at the sides, which means the handles meet – very handy when you're carrying the basket with one hand at the same time as holding your baby."

- Easy to clean
- Static and rocking options
- Stand is difficult to build
2. The Little Green Sheep Natural Knitted Moses Basket and Mattress
Best natural knitted moses basket.
Rrp: £ 119.95
Won silver at our Mother&Baby Awards 2020 for Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket.
The Little Green Sheep's Natural Knitted Moses Basket & Mattress is made from a beautiful organic knitted liner and creates a natural sleeping environment for your little one. As well as being a sturdy and secure basket, it is very easy to pick up and move around the home, and it comes with a mattress too. Coconut fibres form a supportive core, acting as thousands of tiny springs and reducing pressure points. With hypoallergenic and temperature-regulating properties, the comfy layers of organic sheep's wool will keep your baby sleeping soundly.
Our mum tester Hannah said: "I would recommend this to a fellow mum due to the high quality of the product, the look and how easy it is to move around the house, this means that your baby can come with you. Every new mum wants their baby to be safe and comfortable, which this product allows. My little girl loves being in the Moses basket and goes to sleep happily."

3. Shnuggle Dreami Moses Basket and Stand
Best modern moses basket.
Shortlisted in the 2018 Mother&Baby Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket category.
Made from hypoallergenic polypropylene instead of wicker, this contemporary Moses basket is ventilated and easy to clean. It's larger than traditional Moses baskets and comes with a luxury quilted mattress and 100 per cent cotton liner included. A range of stands are available to buy separately – our testers tried out the Moses basket and curved stand, which can be used in the fixed bed-height position at night or as a low-level rocking stand for daytime use.
Our mum tester Katy said: "One of the more sophisticated Moses baskets we tried, which is reflected in the price and in the fact that assembly requires a screwdriver (not included) and some elbow grease. The base is reassuringly sturdy and can be used as a rocker – very handy. The liner is easy to pop off, making it easy to clean. The handles are very short, making it awkward to carry – not ideal when running around after my toddler."

Our parent tester said: "Having the SnüzBaskit from day one was a complete game changer for both myself and my baby girl. Like any newborn, she felt so tiny and precious that every moment holding her or moving her around felt so important. With the SnüzBaskit, I felt that every time I put her in there to sleep, she was ok, protected and safe – allowing me to relax for those much-needed minutes having hands that were free to make food and cuppas with!"

Moses baskets: All you need to know
Do you need a moses basket.
Some mums prefer their babies to sleep in a cot from day one, as it means not having to make the transition from a bedside crib to a cot later on. Others think their tiny newborn might feel rather lost in the vastness of a cot and prefer a cosier cocoon for the first few months. If that's you, or if you can't fit a cot in your bedroom, then a Moses basket is the answer.
Would a bedside crib be better?
The main advantage of a Moses basket over a bedside crib or baby cot bed is portability – a Moses basket has handles on either side of the bassinet, so you can easily carry it with you from room to room when your baby is napping. If you'd rather your baby always nap in your bedroom, then a bedside crib may be a better choice. Moses baskets are generally a more affordable option too.
When do babies outgrow Moses baskets?
Moses baskets are usually suited to babies from newborn up to the age of four months old. However, it's worth noting the weight limit of your Moses basket, as some babies can exceed the limit before, and some are also suited to babies up to six months old.
Another thing to note is that if your baby can sit up or pull themselves up on their own, then it's time to transition your baby to a cot.
Can you use a Moses basket overnight?
A baby can sleep in a Moses basket during the night, and ensure the basket is free from covers, teddies and any pillows. For safe sleep the Lullaby trust recommend your baby must be in the same room as you for the first six months.
How much storage space have you got?
You won't use a Moses basket for long, but this piece of baby kit will have huge sentimental value. You might want to keep it for another baby or as a little basket for teddy bears. Some designs fold neatly away for easy storage once outgrown.
Moses baskets can be pretty versatile. You can have one for your baby in your bedroom or even for the room you spend the most time in during the day. Most Moses baskets also come with handles so that they can be easily moved too.
Will you take it away overnight?
A Moses basket isn't specifically designed for travel use, but when you're popping in to visit the grandparents overnight, taking it with you is easier than packing a travel cot. Plus, your baby is likely to sleep better in the familiarity of their usual bed.

Carolina Moses Basket in Cream
What is a Moses Basket?
Named after Moses in the Bible whose mother placed him afloat the river in a woven basket, Moses Baskets have been a traditional option from time immemorial. The traditional Moses Basket is woven from Palm or Wicker, Palm being the softer, flexible option. The wicker style basket have a more rigid structure along. Both Moses Basket styles feature secure, integrated handles so it can be carried from room to room. A safety recommendation is to always place one hand under the basket for additional support. Moses Baskets come with optional stand, which we recommend to avoid draught from hitting the basket. We offer 2 finishes of Moses Basket Stands. One thing to remember is that the Moses Basket lasts for the first 3 months.
How long can a baby sleep in a Moses basket for?
Up till age three months. Moses Baskets are designed for newborn babies to age three months or twelve weeks and you must not use it beyond this for safety. Once your baby starts to lift his.her head and chest, it's time to transition from Moses Basket to a crib or cot. However, Moses Baskets are suitable for all day and all night sleeping, they are a safe and practical option for newborn baby's first bed.
At what age should baby move my baby from a Moses basket to a cot?
The answer? Cots can be used from newborn. Moses Baskets create a cosier sleeping space for your baby, and make a great first bed, but you can use a cot from day one. Some parents use a cocoon or nest like the Amelie Baby Nest in the cot to create a cosier sleeping area, but you can place a one day old baby in a cot. Now for safety purposes, you should not use the Moses Basket for longer than three months.
Moses Basket stands, are they all the same size?
One question we get a lot is 'Can I use my existing Moses Basket stand for my Moses Basket?" It's hard to tell because Moses baskets are roughly, but not exactly the same size. In addition, some stands are made for specific baskets. Our suggestion is to take your existing basket into the store and try it out. A word of advice if you've been gifted a pre-loved Moses basket, make sure you order a new mattress for it. The Baby Cot Shop offers bespoke mattresses made to any size or shape, you can choose between standard foam and organic Moses basket mattresses. Remember to order a bespoke fitted sheet to go- in your required size.

Moses Baskets VS Cots - What’s best for my baby?
When it comes to your new-born baby, it really is up to you whether you decide to use a Moses basket first or go straight to a cot. Both options are safe but it can be difficult to decide on what option you choose. Some parents prefer to use a Moses basket first to save money or space before investing in a cot. Whereas others may go straight to a crib as it’s more convenient and they already have the space to accommodate one.
In this blog, we will be talking about the pros and cons of Moses baskets and cots to help you decide what is best. We will also include some items for you to choose from and take a look at based on what we think are the best.
It’s important to remember that all parents are different and you should choose your options based on what you’re comfortable with. If everyone you know has used Moses baskets first, don’t just buy one because you think it’s the right thing to do. Everyone has different circumstances and that’s why different options are available.
Why choose a Moses basket?
A Moses basket is better known as a smaller scale crib that can also be transported easily. Traditional Moses baskets are made from a wicker material and are lined with cotton inserts to keep your baby comfortable whilst they are in it. However, over time, companies have taken their own approach on the Moses basket and now plenty of options are available. These include baskets made with different materials as well as different shapes and designs.
Parents commonly choose Moses baskets because they are convenient. If you only have a small space to work with whilst your baby stays in your room, a Moses basket is perfect as they are much smaller than a standard cot. As well as this, they can easily be moved around the house to put your baby to sleep wherever you are. Their handles make it incredibly easy to carry down the stairs and have in the lounge instead of the bedroom.
Moses baskets are usually cheaper than cots, depending on the design you go for. If you are looking for a good budget option whilst your baby is in their early stages, a Moses basket is a great option.
Pros and cons of a Moses basket
There are things to consider when buying a Moses basket as they may not be the right fit for you and your baby. We’ve listed pros and cons to help you make your decision.
- Lightweight and easy to transport around the house or if you’re travelling.
- Can buy stands to make them more accessible for all parents.
- Easy to place on a solid surface for a comfortable night’s sleep.
- Great for space saving.
- The snug-fit design will make your baby feel safer.
- Inexpensive option for those on a budget.
- Acts as a travel cot if you’re staying with friends or family overnight.
- Some babies can find moving from a Moses basket to a cot challenging – one of the reasons parents use cots from birth.
- A more expensive option early on.
- Not ideal around toddlers – a Moses basket stand could easily be pulled over by a toddler and could injure both children.
- Although they come with handles, they are not made to carry your baby around in as it could weaken the basket.
Moses baskets we recommend
Best for comfortability -
Mamas & papas welcome to the world moses basket.
Available for £99 from Mamas & Papas
If you’re looking for a super comforting Moses basket, this one from Mamas & Papas is perfect. You can easily see from looking at this basket that it’s warm and cosy for your little one. The frame of the basket is a wicker material which is covered with a unique style liner that supports and cocoons your baby. This can easily be removed to wash if needed.
What makes this Moses basket unique is firstly, it comes with comfortable embroidered elephant bedding which you’d usually have to purchase separately when buying a Moses basket. Secondly, this Moses basket is designed to be comfortable for both parent and baby. The straps are made with a comfortable polyester material that it much easier to carry than the standard wicker handles. We think this Moses basket looks so snug that even we wouldn’t mind sleeping in this!

Best for budget -
Kinder valley down moses basket.
Available for £26.45 from George (Asda Range)
Last but definitely not least, we have the cheapest Moses basket on our list. This is the perfect Moses basket if you’re in a rush to get one and don’t have a lot of money to spend. Its unisex design is perfect as it doesn’t mean searching around for one that’s right for your baby. The design includes a soft padded design around the sides to protect your baby at night.
We love that the whole basket is completely washable. The bedding and mattress can easily be thrown into the washing machine whilst the basket can be wiped down when there’s any accidents! The hood is also fantastic as it can be adjusted to how much you want to cover your baby – perfect for when the sun is shining in. This Moses basket doesn’t come with a stand but it can be bought separately.
Best for features -
Purflo purair moses basket in soft truffle.
Available for £149 from Pushchairexpert
If one of your biggest worries is that your baby is going to get too hot, this is a perfect Moses basket. It comes with a mesh mattress which is fully breathable along with mesh side panels to allow air to flow through as your baby sleeps. The Moses basket has a beautiful quilted design and comes with 3 hanging toys and a small speaker that plays sounds and soft lullabies. As well as this, it also glows. This Moses basket is great for sensory development.
The stand offers more than what we’ve seen with other ones. Firstly, its design means it’s incredibly sturdy and will not fall over if knocked. Secondly, it comes with a large storage basket underneath, the perfect place for clothing or nappies. We think this basket deserved a place on our list because of the number of features it offers. Also, for £149, this is a great price for something that can do so much.
Why choose a cot?
Like a Moses basket, a cot can be used from the day your baby is born. However, the differences are quite big. Firstly, the sizes of both items are very different. A cot is designed to accommodate your baby from the day they are born up until they are a toddler. For this reason, a cot needs to be bigger to fit your child in throughout their development.
A lot of parents find that by using a cot from day 1, their baby sleeps easier during their development. Moving your child to new environments during their development can unsettle them and can make it much harder to get them into a sleep routine again.
Also, a cot can make it much easier to plan ahead. Before your baby is born, you can already have their nursery fully set up and ready to go. This saves time in the future. For example, when you have a Moses basket, you may delay setting up your baby’s nursery until they need it.
Pros and cons of a cot
- Found in most furniture and department stores.
- Multiple different designs and colours to choose from.
- Safe place to sleep.
- Gives parents their own space.
- Allows baby to be a bit more dependent and learn to self soothe quicker.
- Slightly bigger and may not be suitable for parents’ room.
- Harder to store for future children.
- Some parents think their baby looks lost in a cot because of its size.
Cots we recommend
Best for long use –
Graco benton 4-in-1 cot.
If you’re looking for a cot that will last your little one from birth all the way up to when they need a toddler bed, this is perfect. This item transforms from a cot, to a toddler bed, a daybed and finally, a full-size bed. This accommodates your child as they grow bigger.
This cot has been tested to meet all British safety standards and is guaranteed to be safe for your little one during their development. The cot is made from high-quality pine wood to ensure a sturdy structure.
We love this cot because of its multiple functions and the amount of time it lasts. This cot can save you a lot of money for the future and saves you time having to look for a new bed for your child.
Please note that a mattress will need to be bought separately for this cot.
Best for budget –
Ikea sniglar cot.
If you’re looking to save some money on your baby’s cot, this one from IKEA is perfect. For just £40, your baby will sleep safely and comfortably throughout the night. The base has been tested to ensure it gives all of the support it needs to. It’s also great for air circulation which allows your baby to regulate their temperature easily as they sleep.
We love this cot because of its simple design and great price. We know that not all parents can afford high-cost cots and instead need something to suit their budget. With this cot, you don’t lose out on quality just because the price is lower. Coming from a well-known furniture store, you can rest east knowing that your baby is in a safe environment.
Please note that the mattress and bed linen is sold separately.
Best for practicality –
Drop-down cot bed.
We think it’s really important that your baby’s cot is accessible for you and that you feel comfortable working with it. It can be awkward for some parents when either putting down or getting their baby out of the cot. This is because the frame of the cot is quite high to protect your baby, but can cause discomfort when you’re having to reach into it.
We love this cot because it offers a solution to this. This cot has a drop-down rail in which it makes it much easier to put your baby in or get your baby out of their cot. Soe parents are sceptical about drop-down rails but we can assure you that this one is incredibly safe for you and your baby.
Please note that the mattress isn’t included with this cot.

Safety Tips When Using a Moses Basket for your Baby - Our Guide
Babies spend most of their initial growth sleep, so it’s crucial to find ways that will ensure the safety and security of your baby. After all, they are unlike children or adults that can practically sleep anywhere and without a hitch. With that in mind, you will need to consider how the baby sleeps, which bedding to use, what’s in the cot, and where to sleep.
Fortunately, there are several choices, such as a crib, carrycot, baby cot, bassinet, or a Moses basket. Many choose the latter as it is a cosier alternative to a baby cot, but beyond comfort, it is a space that can create enveloping and reassuring bedding for your little one.
Why Moses Baskets?
Moses baskets allow you to have some room to place it anywhere you are - be it in the kitchen while you cook, living room as you do chores, or even beside your bed in your bedroom. In addition to having the freedom to place it on any surface, there are also detachable stands that allow you to adjust its height.
This will help you keep a watchful eye on risks such as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), fatal accidents such as choking, falling, or suffocating, or even psychological issues involving abandonment.
On the design itself, Moses baskets offer similar functionality to carrycots, though it provides better comfort and ventilation for babies. To that end, here are some tried and true tips that can help you make the most of your Moses basket and ensure the safety of your sleeping baby.
Tip #1: Use a firm, flat, and waterproof mattress
Use a firm mattress that can easily fit into a Moses basket and ensure that it is waterproof to keep the bedding clean and dry. This will make it easy for you to wipe down any toilet mishaps and maintain a tip-top environment for your baby to sleep in.
It’s also crucial to avoid using soft bedding as a firm mattress ensures that your baby will remain in a feet-to-foot position. It also minimizes the risk of SIDS due to accidental suffocation.
Tip #2: Be Strict and Specific with the Basket’s Material
When going for a plastic Moses basket, it’s essential to insist on a product comprised of polyethylene vinyl acetate (PEVA) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). The reason is that other chemical compounds tend to degrade over time, and the seepage may cause harm to your baby.
Tip #3: Remove Additional Bumpers
Bumpers can pose a risk to your baby when they start to roll and move about. Several cases prove that infants tend to entangle themselves within the ties and material or fall to their death from pulling themselves up on the bumpers. With that in mind, a simple Moses basket with firm bedding can be the safest sleeping place for your baby.

Prices & travel costs in Moscow
Are restaurants expensive? How much does a coffee cost? How much money should you bring for a few days in Moscow? Discover how much it costs to travel to Russia and plan ahead to save money on your trip!
Moscow can be an expensive city to travel to, although booking hotels in advance can often mean finding good deals and saving money. Having said that, transport is relatively affordable, and exploring the Moscow Metro is like being in an art museum; parks, churches, and free walking tours provide a great way to save money, and it's possible to find deals at restaurants to suit all budgets.
Tipping in Moscow is not as widely expected as in other countries of the world. Tip tour guides around 10% of their daily rate, but in taxis, hotels, and restaurants only if the service warrants it.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!
I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.
Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.
Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow
Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.
Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.
No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.
As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.
Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street
Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line
As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.
The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.
How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country
Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.
Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.
Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.
Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City
Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line
Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.
Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing
If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.
The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.
How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam
The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.
Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.
The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.
Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower
Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line
VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.
Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches
First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.
A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.
I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).
Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.
Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses
Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line
I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.
During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.
20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World
There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.
Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.
You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.
12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France
If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.
The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.
How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning
Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.
Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.
Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring
Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.
Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.
Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary
I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.
You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary
Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.
Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.
Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds
Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line
Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.
How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe
The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.
All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.
Conclusion and Recommendations
To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.
Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!
