Portable Tools for On-the-Go Orthodontic Care

1. Travel-Friendly Toothbrush and Toothpaste

Investing in a compact toothbrush with a travel case is essential for maintaining oral hygiene while traveling. Look for brushes specifically designed for braces or aligners, ensuring thorough cleaning without causing damage. Additionally, opt for travel-sized toothpaste tubes to save space in your luggage while adhering to airline regulations.

2. Orthodontic Wax

Orthodontic wax is a lifesaver for travelers experiencing discomfort from braces or aligners. Keep a small container of wax in your travel kit to alleviate irritation caused by wires or brackets rubbing against the inside of your mouth. This convenient solution provides instant relief, allowing you to enjoy your journey without the distraction of oral discomfort.

3. Interdental Brushes or Floss Picks

Maintaining proper oral hygiene with braces or aligners requires more than just brushing. Interdental brushes or floss picks are ideal for cleaning between wires and brackets, effectively removing food particles and plaque. Their compact size makes them perfect for travel, ensuring that you can maintain a healthy smile even while on the go.

1. Retainer Case

If you wear a retainer or clear aligners, a sturdy case is essential for protecting them while traveling. Opt for a durable case with secure closures to prevent damage or loss during transit. Remember to always store your retainer in its case when not in use to maintain hygiene and prevent misplacement.

2. Orthodontic Kit

Consider assembling a comprehensive orthodontic kit to take with you on your travels. This kit can include essentials such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, orthodontic wax, floss picks, and a retainer case. Having everything in one convenient package ensures that you’re prepared for any orthodontic-related situation while away from home.

3. Water Flosser

For travelers seeking a more advanced oral hygiene solution, a portable water flosser is an excellent investment. These devices use water pressure to remove plaque and debris from between teeth and around braces or aligners. Compact and rechargeable models are available, making them ideal for use during travel.

If you are in Albany, CA, you can visit  laiorthodontics.com  and get anything you need for proper orthodontic care or even schedule a consultation with Dr. Lai.

Tips for Maintaining Orthodontic Care While Traveling

Proper hydration is crucial for oral health, especially when wearing braces or aligners. Drink plenty of water throughout your travels to help flush away food particles and maintain saliva production, which aids in neutralizing acids and protecting tooth enamel.

2. Pack Wisely

When packing for your trip, prioritize your orthodontic care essentials to ensure you have everything you need. Consider the duration of your journey and pack accordingly, including extra supplies in case of emergencies.

3. Stick to Your Routine

While travel schedules can be hectic, prioritize your orthodontic care routine to maintain consistency. Brush and floss after meals, clean your aligners or retainer as instructed, and use orthodontic wax as needed to address any discomfort.

Maintaining orthodontic care while traveling is achievable with the right tools and products at your disposal. By investing in portable solutions and adhering to a consistent routine, you can ensure that your smile remains healthy and radiant throughout your adventures. Remember to pack wisely, stay hydrated, and prioritize your oral hygiene to enjoy a stress-free travel experience without compromising on your orthodontic care.

8 Tips to Care for Your Braces While Traveling

by Bexar Orthodontists and Pediatric Dentists | Mar 21, 2024 | Braces

Braces San Antonio

Having braces shouldn’t stop you from exploring the world! With a little extra planning and these handy tips, you can ensure your braces stay happy and healthy while you’re on the go.

1. Pack a Braces Travel Kit, Your Secret Weapon

Imagine this: you’re on a delicious food adventure in a new city, but a rogue popcorn kernel gets stuck under your braces. Disaster averted! By packing a dedicated braces travel kit, you’ll be prepared for any situation. Here’s what to include:

  • Travel toothbrush and toothpaste:  Mini versions are perfect for saving space.
  • Floss threaders and dental floss:  Threaders help navigate the wires to floss effectively.
  • Orthodontic wax:  This is a lifesaver for any irritation caused by brackets or wires.
  • Small mirror:  A quick check will ensure a food-free smile.
  • Mouthwash:  Use it when brushing isn’t readily available, like after a long flight.
  • Lip balm:  Braces can sometimes cause dryness, so keep your lips moisturized.
  • Extra rubber bands:  Always good to have on hand in case one breaks.
  • Pain relievers:  Adjustments can sometimes cause discomfort.
  • Small container for a retainer (if applicable):  Don’t forget a safe place to store your retainer if you have one.

2. Be a Braces-Savvy Foodie: Plan Your Meals

Traveling is all about indulging in new culinary experiences, but with braces, you need to be a bit more selective. Here’s how to navigate the delicious world while keeping your braces happy:

  • Research:  Before your trip, look up restaurants with menus that cater to braces-friendly foods. Opt for soft, easy-to-chew options like soups, stews, mashed potatoes, and pasta dishes.
  • Pack Snacks:  Stock up on healthy, braces-friendly snacks like yogurt, cheese cubes, and cut-up fruits and vegetables. This will keep you from reaching for tempting, chewy treats.
  • Be Prepared to Cut and Chop:  Don’t be afraid to ask for your food cut up into smaller pieces or to use a knife and fork to manage tougher items.

3. Maintain Your Brushing and Flossing Routine: Consistency is Key

Traveling doesn’t mean your oral hygiene routine takes a vacation! Here are some pointers for maintaining a consistent cleaning schedule:

  • Brush after every meal:  This is crucial to remove food particles that can get trapped around your braces and cause discomfort or cavities.
  • Floss at least once a day:  Flossing removes plaque and debris from between your teeth and under the wires, keeping your gums healthy.
  • Find creative solutions:  If you’re on the go and brushing after a meal isn’t possible, use mouthwash as a temporary solution.

4. Stay Hydrated: Water is Your Best Friend

Drinking plenty of water is essential for overall health, but it’s especially important when traveling with braces. Here’s why:

  • Hydration helps flush away food particles:  Water helps wash away any food debris that might get stuck around your braces, reducing the risk of cavities and irritation.
  • Staying hydrated keeps your mouth healthy: Dehydration can lead to a dry mouth, which can increase your risk of gum problems.

5. Protect Your Braces During Activities

Traveling often involves adventure activities. Here’s how to keep your braces safe during these exciting times:

  • Wear a mouthguard:  If you’re participating in contact sports or activities with a high risk of falls, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces .
  • Be mindful during water activities: Chlorine in pools and salt water can irritate your mouth. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water after swimming.

6. Plan for the Unexpected: Be Prepared

While you can plan for most things, sometimes unexpected situations arise. Here’s what to do:

  • Broken bracket or wire: If a bracket breaks or a wire loosens, don’t panic. Try to gently put the wire back in place with orthodontic wax. If it doesn’t stay put, contact your orthodontist for guidance. You can find several experienced orthodontists who can help you during such emergencies.
  • Lost retainer:  If you lose your retainer, contact your orthodontist immediately to discuss options for a replacement.

7. Consider a Pre-Travel Check-Up with Your Orthodontist

Scheduling a checkup with your orthodontist before your trip allows them to address any potential issues and ensure your braces are in good shape for travel.

8. Keep Your Orthodontist’s Contact Information Handy

Even with the best planning, unforeseen situations can arise. Having your orthodontist’s contact information readily available provides peace of mind. Most orthodontists offer options for remote consultations, so you can get guidance without necessarily needing an in-person visit.

Bonus Tip: Pack a Small Case for Your Braces Travel Kit

Designate a small, sturdy case to store your braces travel kit. This ensures everything stays organized and protected throughout your travels.

Traveling with braces doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little preparation and these helpful tips, you can confidently explore the world while maintaining a healthy smile. Remember, if you’re considering orthodontic treatment in San Antonio, many qualified orthodontists can help you achieve a beautiful, healthy smile.

Navigating Summer Travel with Braces: Your Essential Kit Guide

braces travel case

The summer season is synonymous with adventure, exploration, and relaxation. As you gear up for your upcoming summer vacation, packing the essentials is key. If you or a family member wears braces, there are a few extra items you’ll want to include in your travel kit. Keeping these items handy can ensure a comfortable, worry-free trip while maintaining your orthodontic care routine.

Your Braces Care Travel Kit Essentials

  • Travel Toothbrush: A compact, travel-friendly toothbrush is a must-have for any trip. Opt for one with a cap to protect the bristles from bacteria and other contaminants. Remember, it’s even more important to keep your teeth clean when you have braces, as food particles can easily get stuck.
  • Orthodontic Wax: Orthodontic wax can be a lifesaver if a wire breaks or a bracket starts rubbing against the inside of your mouth. It can help prevent sores and offer relief if any part of your braces becomes uncomfortable.
  • Dental Floss and Floss Threaders: Dental floss, especially when used with a floss threader, can help you clean around braces and between teeth. There are even special floss products designed for use with braces.
  • Mouthwash: Travel-sized mouthwash can be handy for a quick freshening up. Choose a mouthwash with fluoride to strengthen your tooth enamel and combat cavities.
  • Travel Mirror: A compact mirror can be very useful to check your braces and teeth after meals and to make sure you’ve effectively cleaned your teeth.
  • Over-the-counter Pain Relievers: Having some pain relief medicine like ibuprofen can be helpful in case you experience discomfort from your braces.
  • Orthodontic Silicone: This can be used instead of orthodontic wax and is especially helpful if you’re planning any water activities, as it’s more resistant to melting or being washed away.
  • Interproximal Brush: This is a tiny brush that can clean between your brackets and under the wires of your braces, removing food particles that a regular toothbrush might miss.
  • Retainer Case: If you also use a retainer along with your braces, a sturdy, ventilated case can keep your appliance clean and safe when not in use.

Keep Smiling All Summer Long

Summer vacations are a time for fun and relaxation. Don’t let braces-related concerns hamper your enjoyment. Packing a well-stocked braces care travel kit can keep you comfortable, protect your teeth, and ensure your braces continue doing their job effectively while you’re away from home. Happy travels, and keep smiling!

Travel Packing List for Braces

Image

By South Grove Family Dentistry

The holiday season is here — and with it, holiday travel plans! Hitting the road with new braces? Read on for our handy travel packing list for braces so you won’t have to worry about leaving without any must-haves.

Braces-Friendly Snacks

At the top of our travel packing list for braces are braces-friendly snacks — for good reason! It can be tough to be someplace unfamiliar and not know where to find food that is safe for your braces. When you pack your own braces-friendly snacks, you have one less thing to worry about!

You could always eat the food on the road or at your destination if it turns out to be braces-friendly, but this way you’ll always have backup snacks just in case so you won’t have to be tempted to eat something that could potentially damage your braces when you’re feeling extra hungry.

Braces Care Kit

Another important thing that should always be on your travel packing list for braces is a dedicated braces care kit! This should include your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, dental picks, and floss picks. It’s a good idea to also bring some wax from your orthodontist if your braces are new to help keep you comfortable.

We also recommend packing your braces care kit in a special travel case that’s just for your braces care supplies. This way, you’ll always have everything you need in one easy-to-access place!

Your Orthodontist’s Number!

Last but not least, don’t forget to pack your orthodontist’s phone number when you hit the road! You never know when something unexpected might come up and you might want to call your orthodontist with a question or concern.

When you have your orthodontist’s number on hand, you’ll be able to call right away to make an appointment if a bracket breaks or a wire comes loose or something doesn’t feel quite right. They’ll also be able to tell you how to temporarily manage the issue in the meantime so you can experience less discomfort and get back to enjoying your holiday with minimal disruption!

Call our to make an appointment with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.

Taking care of braces while on vacation.

If you’re undergoing  orthodontic treatment , you must be aware of the common braces problems.

While most people are very careful during their treatment, some tend to let loose while traveling. However, this can land you in some serious dental problems and have a negative impact on your treatment since your braces require constant care.

Follow these useful tips to care for your braces while you’re out to have fun:

Be Careful of What You Eat  – While traveling, you may be tempted to try the regional cuisine and new delicacies that you won’t get to eat anywhere else. But as much as this may be tempting, you need to understand that it’s more important to take care of braces while traveling since it may be troublesome finding a good dentist in a foreign place if the braces are damaged.

So, better than regretting it later, avoid these foods if you have braces, especially when traveling:

  • Sticky foods such as gum, licorice, dried fruit, caramel, etc.
  • Hard foods such as nuts, hard taco shells, pizza crust, corn, apples, carrots, bagels, etc.
  • Sugary foods like cake, candy, ice cream, cookies, etc.

Don’t Ditch Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Proper dental care is not only important for oral health but also critical to the efficiency of the dental treatment. So, if you start thinking that it’s alright to ditch the oral hygiene routine for just a few days while traveling, remember that your oral health will definitely take a hit. Follow this hygiene routine diligently:

  • Brush and floss, in the morning, after meals, and before going to sleep.
  • Use mouthwash if brushing and flossing aren’t possible after meals while on a vacation.
  • Don’t forget to brush your tongue and the palate.

Prepare a Travel Dental Kit  – Vacations can be as much adventure as they can be fun. After all, you’re on foreign land. So, to stay prepared, always keep an extra dental kit with you. An unpredictable journey can result in unexpected meals. And the extra dental kit will come in handy in such cases

Your Braces Travel Kit

Here’s what your dental kit must contain:.

  • Compact mirror to check for broken wires or brackets
  • Nylon floss picks
  • Orthodontic wax in case you’ve recently got braces

Travel Tips While In Invisalign Treatment

All these tips above are great for people undergoing all kinds of orthodontic treatments. But a very common mistake people undergoing Invisalign treatment make is forgetting to carry their retainers.

Many people tend to lose their Invisalign trays while traveling. And this results in the loss of progress made so far. To avoid this, ensure that you carry the retainers and use them if the need arises. Wear them for at least 20-22 hours each day if, for some reason, you’re not able to wear your Invisalign trays.

Whether you have traditional braces, Invisalign aligners, or retainers, don’t let your oral health routine get disturbed. Keep your kit handy, drink plenty of water, and see a professional in case of an emergency.

Braces Survival Kit (with Shopping List) for School, Work, or Travel

Posted on August 30th, 2021

illustration of a colorful blue and red carrying case holding toothbrush, floss, tissue, and compact mirror for a braces survival kit

A braces survival kit is a must-have for students heading back to school, and for anyone that wears braces when they are away from home. Check out our guide for everything you need, and download our free, printer-friendly checklist so you don’t forget anything when shopping for supplies.

Back to School with Braces

If your children wear braces and are going to school in person this year, they will need to bring several items with them to keep their teeth clean and maintain their braces—A.K.A., a braces survival kit .

Braces Survival Kit for Work, Travel, or Anytime Braces-Wearers are Away From Home

School isn’t the only place braces-wearers need to be prepared: If you’re an adult undergoing orthodontic treatment, then you will want to bring a kit with you to work to maintain your investment, keep your breath fresh, and avoid the embarrassment of lunch leftovers stuck in your teeth and braces.

A braces survival kit is also handy for situations like sleepovers, business trips, and vacations; so, keep reading to discover everything you need to keep your braces clean on the go.

What Goes Into a Survival Kit for Braces?

The following list includes everything you’ll need to make your own DIY braces survival kit.

1. Travel-sized Toothbrush and Toothpaste—Braces Survival Kit Must-Haves

braces care kit travel-sized toothpaste and toothbrush

Even if you don’t put together a full-blown braces survival kit, you should at the very least carry a travel-sized toothbrush and tube of toothpaste with you when you’re on the go.

For an even more convenient (though, perhaps, less eco-friendly) option, Crest, Colgate, and other brands make disposable, pre-pasted mini brushes (like Wisps ).

2. Interdental Brushes

A purple and blue package of dentek interdental brushes with 4 individual brushes arranged diagonally next to it

Interdental brushes are great to have on hand both at home and when you’re away. These disposable brushes bend and flex, making it easier to access hard-to-reach areas. And, they have tiny bristles that seek out food particles trapped between your teeth and braces.

3. Travel-sized Mouthwash

3 travel-sized bottles of Listerine alcohol-free mouthwash

Rinsing with mouthwash will help keep your breath fresh throughout the day and will remove food particles and kill germs from places your travel toothbrush didn’t reach. Opt for a mouthwash that has fluoride for added protection against cavities.

4. Floss and Threader or Flossers

flossers, floss, and floss threader

Flossing can be a challenging task when you wear braces. But, it’s more important than ever to include it in your oral hygiene routine when you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment, even when you’re away from home.

If you choose to include traditional floss in your braces care kit, then do yourself a favor and throw in some floss threaders as well—they will save you time and make getting the floss between your braces so much easier.

Alternatively, you could put a pack of flossers in your kit instead. Platypus and other brands make flossers that are specifically designed to work with braces.

5. Orthodontic Wax

GUM brand orthodontic wax

Next up on our list of essential items for a braces survival kit is orthodontic wax.

During the initial phase of orthodontic treatment and for the first few days after subsequent adjustments, your lips, tongue, and the insides of your cheeks may become irritated from your braces.

Orthodontic or dental wax acts as a barrier between your mouth and the sharp or rough surfaces of your braces, and will greatly reduce any discomfort you may be experiencing.

Even after your mouth adjusts to your appliance (don’t worry, it will!), it’s still a good idea to keep some wax on hand in case of an emergency, as it can protect your mouth from a broken wire or damaged bracket until you can see your orthodontist to have it repaired.

6. Lip Balm

5 varieties of Jack Black lip balm

Your lips may become more dry or chapped during your orthodontic journey, so lip balm is another item you’ll want to keep in your braces care kit. If you’re not already committed to a particular brand, check out our favorite lip balms for dry, chapped lips from braces or Invisalign .

7. Save Face by Including a Compact Mirror in Your Braces Survival Kit

red compact mirror for your braces survival kit

No one wants to get caught with pieces of food stuck in their braces! A quick check in a compact mirror after eating will prevent those awkward moments, so be sure to include one in your braces survival kit.

3 packs of Keenex brand pocket tissues arranged diagonally

Let’s face it—drool happens sometimes. Keeping some tissues on hand will make quick work of cleanup when the need arises.

9. Pain Relievers

3 travel packets of Advil arranged overlapping each other with two pills in front of them

Over-the-counter pain relievers such as Advil or Tylenol can ease the pain of new braces or discomfort following an adjustment. Just make sure you have your physician’s approval, use only as directed, and only when needed.

In the case of children and teens, OTC medication should only be administered under a parent or guardian’s supervision. Additionally, you should check with your students’ schools to make sure pain relievers are allowed before including them in their braces survival kits.

10. Braces Survival Kit Carrying Case

3 carrying cases for a braces survival kit arranged horizontally

Keep your braces survival kit items handy by putting them all in a dedicated carrying case. Even better if the case is in favorite color or pattern–if you have to wear braces, you might as well have fun with it (cases pictured above available at Target )!

several colorful reusable water bottles arranged in a pyramid formation

Your mouth may feel drier than usual when you first wear braces ( Invisalign , too, for that matter), so it’s a good idea to keep a bottle of water with you when you’re on the go (water bottles pictured above available on Amazon ).

The 9 Best Travel Jewelry Cases of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

Keep your jewelry safe with one of these protective and stylish travel cases.

Travel + Leisure / Jhett Thompson

Traveling with jewelry can be risky business, so it’s important to pack your accessories thoughtfully. Sure, you can always use Ziploc baggies and tissue paper, but the easiest and safest way to keep your jewelry safe is by using a handy travel-size jewelry case.

Since travel jewelry cases come in all different shapes and sizes, we tried 25 options from trusted luggage and jewelry brands. After loading the cases up with jewelry, we tossed, dropped, and shook them to see how safe the jewelry would be in situations like traveling where rough handling can be expected. From testing, we selected the winning jewelry cases that will keep your jewelry safe and organized whether you’re a jewelry minimalist or maximalist.

Our Top Picks

Best overall: cuyana travel jewelry case, best budget: bagsmart jewelry organizer bag.

  • Best Roll-Up: Bagsmart Peri Folding Jewelry Organizer

Best Personalization: Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case

Best large capacity: kendra scott medium travel jewelry case, best for long trips: calpak jewelry case, best compact: vee & co. small travel jewelry case.

  • Best for Everyday Use: Levenger Mini Jewelry Organizer

Best Sustainable: Paravel Jewelry Case

The small, oval container is the perfect size for a weekend getaway.

It could use a few more organizational features.

Cuyana’s oval-shaped case is deceptively spacious in comparison to its smaller design. Perfect for minimalist jewelry wearers, the interior has plenty of room and designated spots for several rings and earrings, but there aren’t specific latches for necklaces or bracelets. The two slip pockets on each side of the case can hold bigger or longer pieces of jewelry, but they run the risk of getting tangled without a latch so we wish the organization was a bit better. Made with genuine leather, the case has a protective exterior with a soft suede interior to further guard the jewelry against scratching or other damage. Throughout six months of tests, we loved this case for weekend getaways and longer trips alike and found it to be the perfect size to toss in a backpack or personal item.

The bag is spacious yet compact and comes with a handle to carry it easily.

The quality feels a bit lower than other cases we tried.

Designed similarly to a toiletry bag, we love that this wallet-friendly jewelry case comes with a top handle to transport it to and from a suitcase with ease. The compact bag is also a great deal considering how much jewelry it can hold while still being easy to pack. The polyester material is protective and flexible so the bag can pack down to a smaller size depending on how much jewelry is inside. The interior has an earring panel, ring bands, necklace clips, and various zippered pockets for storing all of the jewelry you want to pack for a trip. While we didn’t notice any issues with quality during testing, the materials feel less durable than other pricier cases we tried. We tossed the packed jewelry case around a bit during our tests and the items remained perfectly safe without any tangling or damage. Even after traveling with the case on seven flights, trains, and throughout more than four roadtrips during our six months of tests, nothing became tangled and the case is proving to be durable and sturdy.

Best Roll-up: Bagsmart Peri Folding Jewelry Organizer

The compartments roll out, which makes it easier to pack jewelry.

It was slightly difficult to put the earrings on the designated card.

Bagsmart impressed us a second time with their roll-up jewelry organizer, which was the easiest bag to pack with jewelry during testing. After six months of use, we love that it can fit a lot of jewelry and has compartments big enough for even the biggest hoops and other dramatic earrings. The envelope-style case unrolls and lies flat so you can easily see all of the pockets, latches, and hooks for storing every piece of jewelry you could ever need for traveling thanks to the larger capacity. We had some slight difficulty getting earrings into the holes in the earring card, but it was just a minor inconvenience, and there are plenty of other spots to place hoops and studs. Made with cotton fabric, the case may feel a bit flimsy, but is soft and protective, and it’s very compact since it can lie fairly flat even after it’s packed with jewelry.

The Details: Cotton | 9.06 x 6.3 x 5.75 inches

Mark & Graham

It comes in 28 color and pattern options — plus it's monogrammable.

After six months of using the case, we wish it had more space for necklaces, bracelets, and larger earrings.

Looking for the perfect gift for a traveler? You can monogram this Mark & Graham jewelry case with up to three letters for a personalized touch that makes the gift all the more thoughtful. The square-shaped case has a sturdy exterior that feels like it will hold up perfectly in a packed carry-on and the pebbled vegan leather gives the box a sophisticated look while sitting on a desk or dresser. The interior is split into two sections with a mirror divider to separate the box, which makes it slightly difficult to fit larger jewelry pieces like a watch or chunky necklace, but after six months of testing, we did like that the separate sections help you access all your items without spilling everything out. We also love that there are tons of ring pillow slots so if you’re a big ring wearer, this jewelry case is an excellent option. In addition, there are several necklace or earring latches as well as a slip pocket and sections for bracelets or broaches.

The Details: Vegan leather, linen | 4.5 x 4.5 x 2.25 inches

Kendra Scott

The large size of this jewelry box makes it useful for heavy packers or at-home use.

It doesn’t have any necklace hooks.

Jewelry maximalists will appreciate the bigger size of Kendra Scott’s jewelry case. It looks like a traditional jewelry box that sits on a dresser, but it’s also very portable thanks to its lightweight materials and design. The interior has four large compartments to easily drop in bracelets, necklaces, or watches without any hassle and there are over 10 ring pillow slots for rings or earrings. To keep all the packed jewelry safe, the case comes with a divider to prevent items from jostling around on the go. The case also comes with a small matching zippered pouch that you can keep in the box or remove for extra storage. We found this separate pouch to be perfect for use on shorter trips when you may not need to bring the full case. While we wish the box had a few more organizational features like necklace hooks or earring holes, the jewelry remained perfectly intact after we shook it around, so we’re confident that the box keeps items safely tucked away. Plus, after six months of use, the stylish case still looks new and is a great option for home storage, too.

The Details: Polyurethane, polyester | 8 x 5.5 x 2.5 inches

After six months of traveling with this case, not one necklace became tangled thanks to the plentiful hooks.

We wish it had more storage options for studs.

If you’re embarking on an international trip that includes a checked bag, we recommend this jewelry case from Calpak to weather the journey. Since the rectangular jewelry case is bigger, it can easily store enough jewelry for several weeks of traveling. The structured design makes it ultra-durable and our favorite part is that it has a built-in drawstring bag that does an excellent job of keeping bracelets, watches, or earrings safely secured in the bottom section of the jewelry case. The top part has a variety of necklace latches and a ring holder for even more security. When we rigorously shook the container, none of the jewelry budged from its original spots, so we feel confident that this case will protect your valuables in a checked bag with no issues.

The Details: Faux leather, faux suede | 7 x 5 x 2.5 inches

The square-shaped box is small enough to easily fit in a carry-on or backpack.

The jewelry might scratch up the mirror on the divider.

The lower price and superior functionality make this petite jewelry case an excellent option for anyone looking for a place to store their accessories. It’s smaller than a lot of the options we tested, so we think it’s ideal for travelers needing to save space in a backpack or suitcase. Despite its compact stature, this jewelry box can fit tons of jewelry from studs to a leather watch. It’s intuitive to pack the case with rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and more since there are designated latches, slots, and compartments for virtually everything. When we shook the case, all of the jewelry remained packed away in its original spot without any damage occurring. The box has a divider with a mirror on one side and our only worry is that the mirror could get scratched by the metals or vice-versa, so you may want to put a small piece of fabric between the mirror just in case.

The Details: PU vegan leather | 3.94 x 3.94 x 1.97 inches

Best for Everyday Use: Levenger Carrie Mini Jewelry Organizer

The small design makes it easy to store the case in a purse.

It can’t fit large jewelry pieces.

Jewelry minimalists will love this tiny jewelry case for keeping track of just a few pieces of jewelry while on the go. After six months of use, we love that this Levenger mini jewelry case has latches, hooks, and pockets to protect and organize rings, bracelets, and necklaces. It is on the small side with minimum space for studs, but light packers will appreciate the hard, durable exterior that still looks new after six months. The genuine leather exterior and suede interior feels luxurious and looks elegant, so this also makes a great jewelry case for newlyweds going on a honeymoon . We especially love the tiny zippered pocket in the middle of the case for storing extra small jewelry items like studs or stacking rings.

The Details: Leather, microsuede | 4.25  x 4.5 x 1 inches

All of the materials used to make this case are recycled.

The organizational features could be better and, after six months of use, we think it's a bit too large to pack in a carry-on.

Paravel is one of our favorite luggage brands , so we’re pleased to report that its jewelry case impressed us, too. The circular case is made entirely of recycled materials from post-consumer plastic water bottles and upcycled zippers to create an eco-friendly accessory for travel. Besides the sustainability factor, the case comes with a large drawstring pouch that makes it easy to drop in larger pieces of jewelry like bracelets or watches. The top flap of the case has a ring holder and earring post to store smaller pieces of jewelry, but we wish there were a few more organization features like necklace latches or zippered pockets. However, we love the vintage-style design and, like most Paravel bags, you can monogram the case with initials for a special touch.

The Details: Recycled canvas, vegan leather | 5.6 x 3.6 inches

Other Travel Jewelry Cases We Liked

The jewelry cases below get an honorable mention since they still performed well in testing, but fell slightly short compared to our top performers.

Benevolence Plush Velvet Travel Jewelry Box Organizer : This jewelry box can fit a ton of items, but you’ll want to make sure everything is secure before traveling since we noticed most of the jewelry became dislodged during testing.

Mejuri Travel Case : The case looks elegant and sleek on the outside, but the interior doesn’t offer much in the organizational department, so it’s best for minimalist travelers.

Our Testing Process

After thoroughly researching jewelry cases from trusted brands, we selected 25 options to first test out in our New York City lab. We packed each case with every type of jewelry you can think of, including rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, watches, and more to get a feel for the usefulness of the organization features. Then, we tossed, dropped, and shook the cases (think Kourtney Kardashian level of salad bowl shaking) to see if the jewelry remained safely secured in place or if the pieces moved around. We also examined the cases for any scuffing or damage.

With our lab testing portion complete, we then rated the jewelry cases based on ease of use, capacity, design, and quality to determine the winners. We will continue to test the jewelry cases for an additional six months so we can see how each one performs while traveling in a more natural setting after the lab testing.

Tips for Buying a Jewelry Case

Buy the right size case.

First, you’ll want to think about how much jewelry you travel with to determine the best size for your needs. For those who travel with bigger pieces of jewelry like watches or chunky necklaces, consider getting a more structured case with large compartments. Delicate or minimalist jewelry will pack better in an envelope or binder style of jewelry case. And if your jewelry collection consists of just a few pieces, opt for a mini jewelry case to save space in your luggage.

Consider organization

Most jewelry cases come with latches, hooks, pockets, and pillows to hold pretty much any piece of jewelry you can think of. Like other types of travel organizers , some jewelry cases are more barebones than others, so you’ll want to buy a case according to your organization preferences or based on the type of jewelry you travel most with. If most of your jewelry consists of earrings, be sure to get a box that has pockets and hole cards with spots for hoops, studs, and dangling earrings.

The best way to keep your jewelry safe and organized is to use a jewelry case. The best thing about travel jewelry cases is that they often come with designated slots for all types of accessories to make packing intuitive and quick. If you want to add an extra layer of protection, you can always place tissue or fabric between your jewelry to prevent the pieces from rubbing against one another in transit.

Once your jewelry is packed into the case, we recommend placing the jewelry case between soft clothing for safekeeping or in a personal item in case you have to gate-check your bag when flying. It can be risky to place a jewelry case in a checked bag since you may run the risk of the bag getting lost, but it depends on your comfort level for flying with potentially valuable items.

Types of Braces

Traditional metal braces.

metal braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

Self-Ligating Braces

self-ligating braces

Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces. However, self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics, meaning fewer appointments and less friction being placed on the tooth. Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. They are the same size as metal braces, but use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth into place. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth, and requires fewer adjustments because there are no elastics to replace.

Clear (Ceramic) Braces

clear braces

Ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have cosmetic concerns. While they are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger and are more brittle than their metal counterparts. For these reasons, ceramic braces tend to be used more on upper front teeth than on lower teeth.

Clear Aligners

invisalign

Clear aligners are a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable acrylic trays that straighten your teeth like braces. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are less of a hassle. The aligners are comfortable and have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment.

Treatment Options

Invisalign ®.

Imagine a braces treatment that doesn't use wires or metal brackets, a treatment that is virtually pain free and doesn't require you to change your current lifestyle. With Invisalign, you can straighten your teeth and experience the benefits of a great smile without having to deal with a mouth full of metal! Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable, comfortable aligners that straighten teeth in less time than traditional braces.  Dr. Chen's experience in Invisalign has benefited many of our patients.

Self-Ligating Interactive Braces

Do you need braces, but don't like the idea of having huge metal brackets and wires on your teeth for such a long time? With self-ligagting interactive braces you now have an alternative to those traditional metal braces you're dreading! Self-ligating interactive braces are a new, technologically advanced system that gives you a straight, healthy smile faster, and with fewer office visits. Self-ligating interactive braces are smaller and provide greater comfort, using less force than with other braces.

Microimplant Technology

The Microimplant Technoogy is one of the most iimportant innovations in orthodontics in the last 15 years.  Because of Dr. Chen's expertise in microimplants, we can treat complicated cases without removal of teeth or jaw surgery.  Another fascinating application of the microimplant technology is to expand older patients' upper jaw without surgery.

Clarity™

Orthodontic treatment no longer means having a mouth full of unsightly metal wires and brackets. Clarity self-ligating braces are an aesthetic alternative to traditional metal braces. Clarity braces are clear, small in size, and customized to fit your teeth and mouth. Clarity braces are safe and effective, and are a great option for patients of all ages.

Dentofacial Orthopedics

What is dentofacial orthopedics? Many patients wonder what it means when their orthodontist specializes in dentofacial orthopedics. This specialization means that your doctor has training and experience in working with the management of tooth movement (orthodontics) as well as the guidance of facial growth and development (dentofacial orthopedics), which usually occurs during childhood.  There is only a limited time window to do this type of treatment to achieve the maximal benefit.  The time window is between age 7-10 for most patients.

Sleep Apnea

Do your children get drowsy easily without any explanation? Have your kids  started snoring loudly or waking up breathless in the middle of the night for no reason? If your children have any of these symptoms, your children  may have a condition known as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea affects millions of Americans and can be a serious condition. Sleep apnea can be controlled by working with a sleep specialist who can prescribe safe and effective treatments.  To achieve the maximal benefit, a key is to start treatment early,  when the children still have baby teeth, not waiting until all the baby teeth fall out.

Surgical Orthodontics

Orthodontics is designed to reposition and straighten teeth, but surgical orthodontics may be needed in some cases to correct more severe jaw irregularities. Surgical orthodontics is used to straighten the jaw into alignment, often improving a patient's ability to chew, speak, and breathe. Braces are often worn in conjunction with orthodontic surgery to make sure the teeth stay in the proper position as well.

How We Tested

Why trust people, what is people tested.

People / Joy Kim

Packing jewelry is the pan-ultimate dilemma among travelers wanting to accessorize while on vacation. Maybe you've been throwing your pieces into individual plastic bags or perhaps you've been placing them in your toiletry bag and hoping for the best. In any case, if you're a frequent traveler, it may be time to upgrade your storage with a dedicated travel case for your jewelry. With dedicated slots, compartments, and pouches, these convenient cases keep your baubles protected and secure — no more tangled necklaces, loose rings, or scratched-up bangles.

We tested 25 travel jewelry cases for design, durability, material, organization compartments, and size and eventually narrowed it down to the best of the best. All of these cases passed the durability test and won high marks on design, capacity, and ease of use.

No matter which case you choose, our jewelry experts, Abigail Valentine and Karina Brez , recommend placing your travel jewelry case in your carry-on to prevent loss or damage.

Read on for the travel jewelry cases that got our PEOPLE Tested stamp of approval.

Best Overall

Bagsmart jewelry organizer bag.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

This bag is versatile, with secure fastenings for different types of jewelry.

It has a top handle, which makes it easy to tote around.

The case remains flat and compact even when filled.

It offers easy visibility to all items.

The layout is not convenient for hoop earrings.

The Bagsmart Jewelry Organizer Bag won our top pick because it accomplishes the difficult task of keeping your accessories secure and intact while traveling in one no-fuss organizer. Two layers of elastics keep your necklaces tangle-free, while the inner zippered pouch holds more valuable pieces that may be more prone to scratching (like a watch).

We also appreciated how well the organizer made it easy to access pieces. We appreciate the way the bag completely opens flat like a book to reveal all the contents. It's easy to organize because you can see all the different compartments at once. It's also a great daily storage option for those pressed for space. Organizing your jewelry in this bag with easy pull-out is excellent whether traveling or just getting ready for a normal day. It even features a convenient handle so it's easy to tote around. The one area where the bag lacks is storage for hoop earrings, but in every other area, we think this bag excels.

Size: 9.8 x 6.1 x 1.9 inches | Colors: 10 | Material: Polyester

After seven flights and four car trips during the past six months, this bag is still performing as well as the first day we tried it. We appreciate its durability and ability to hold a lot of jewelry. Because of its spaciousness, versatility, and how well it protects our jewelry, we also use this bag for extra storage at home.

Best Budget

Teamoy jewelry travel case.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Capacity 4 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Performance 3.5 /5

The soft-shell case is malleable and easy to pack.

The smaller size makes it ideal for shorter trips.

It's easy to access compartments thanks to the all-around zipper closure.

The ring sleeve only opens on one side.

The Teamoy Small Jewelry Travel Case comes with a lot of perks: multiple features for different pieces of jewelry, an interior pouch, and a compact size that's easy to tote around. The case is ideal for sticking into a suitcase, carry-on, weekender, or tote. While compact in size, we found that this case has plenty of capacity to store enough jewelry for a trip of a few weeks or even a month, and can easily be transported, even in a piece of small luggage or a handbag. It's also soft and malleable, so it's easy to pack, and the all-around zipper closure makes it easy to access everything you need.

Keep in mind that the ring sleeve only opens on one side, which means you'll have to remove each ring to get to the one you want (though this makes for more security as there aren't two sides for the rings to potentially slip out of).

Size: 6.5 x 4.5 x 1.5 inches | Colors: 5 | Material: Cotton

Best for Weekend Trips

Benevolence plush velvet travel jewelry box organizer.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Design 4 /5
  • Performance 4 /5

It has a built-in mirror that makes putting jewelry on easier.

It comes with a microfiber cleaning cloth.

There are adjustable dividers to accommodate different-sized pieces.

The dividers shuffled out of place when the bag was shaken.

The Benevolence Plush Velvet Travel Jewelry Box Organizer is a convenient jewelry case that works well for weekend traveling. We were able to fit three necklaces, one chunky bracelet, two hoop earring pairs, two pairs of stud earrings, and four rings, all of which were easily accessible. The inner compartments are thoughtfully positioned, and the mirrored divider wall fits nicely inside the box frame. Unlike other organizers, this has slits for rings versus a ring bar (which requires you to take every ring out to get to the one you want). Plus, the felt wall dividers are adjustable, meaning they'll be able to accommodate different-sized items (though they did shuffle around after the box was shaken).

It also comes with a microfiber jewelry cleaning cloth, which is a nice addition for on-the-go maintenance. This jewelry organizer comes in nine colors — from red to navy — and has a soft velvet exterior that gives it a higher-end look (impressive, considering its reasonable price tag). Overall, this is great for those seeking to travel with a few core pieces of jewelry.

Size: 3.75 x 3.75 inches | Colors: 9 | Material: Velvet

During the past six months, this case has remained in the same condition as the day we got it. The fabric is in good condition and the zipper is working smoothly. It fits a lot of jewelry for its size, and the size and shape make it easy to pack in any bag. We love that we can see all of the jewelry items at once, and except for a few items being tossed during travel, everything remains organized.

Best Roll-Up

Vlando viaggio small jewelry case.

It includes wide compartments that are good for large pieces of jewelry.

The front snap is sturdy and secure.

It's lined with a velvet interior and won't scratch your jewelry.

There are no hooks or snaps for necklaces.

If you're pressed for space, go for the Vlando Viaggio Small Jewelry Case Box , a roll-up case containing three cylinder compartments stacked on top of each other, each of which forms a spiral when opened. While this doesn't contain any dedicated slots or slits for your jewelry pieces, it can accommodate both large and small chunky bracelets, rings, brooches, and pins (we wouldn't recommend this for necklaces or dainty bracelets as there are no hooks or snaps and they could get tangled). It's also nicely constructed with a non-scratch velvet interior despite its low price tag — the stitching was even and the front snap shut nicely to ensure nothing fell out.

Size: 3.3 x 7.3 inches | Colors: 11 | Material: Faux leather

Six months after first trying it, this travel jewelry case is still working great. It was ideal for packing and separating small items — like hair pins — for a wedding and honeymoon, and we appreciate that it also has a few deeper compartments. What we don’t love is that it can’t stand up on its own and that you have to open it carefully to make sure it’s not upside down.

Best Space-Saving

Bagsmart peri folding jewelry organizer.

This has a foldable design, which is easy to pack up and open.

It has useful buttons for rings and necklaces.

There is ample capacity for a variety of pieces.

The exterior is soft and may get damaged if not packed with caution.

The Bagsmart Travel Jewelry Organizer Roll may look like a clutch at first glance, but once unfolded, this foldable organizer spreads out into a convenient jewelry storage option. Featuring buckle bands for rings, a panel for earrings, and a necklace buckle, along with an interior zipper pouch and a pocket, it's impressive how much this roll fits despite its size. We love that it's compact enough to fit into an overnight bag, but has plenty of space for lots of jewelry options.

We found the buttons are useful for rings and necklaces, and the zipper compartments are great for bracelets and smaller items. It kept almost all the jewelry in place during the shake and drop tests, and the roll itself did not pop open even after dropping it multiple times. The exterior is soft and may get damaged if not packed with caution. All in all, this is a great option for maximalist packers who may not need hard-sided protection for their jewelry case (for instance, if they plan on carrying it with them in a tote bag).

Size: 6.3 x 9.06 x 5.75 inches | Colors: 9 | Material: Cotton

After six months of use, this travel jewelry organizer is still working fine. We appreciate the bag’s durability and ample storage capacity. We’d recommend it to anyone looking for a budget-friendly travel jewelry case with lots of storage space.

Vee & Co. Small Travel Jewelry Case

  • Performance 4.5 /5

This case comes with a reasonable price tag.

It's lightweight to travel with.

The vegan leather exterior is easy to wipe clean.

Though this comes with a mirror, it isn't covered and could scratch easily.

The Vee Small Travel Jewelry Case is a nifty little travel case with a clamshell opening and a range of pockets and fasteners on the top and bottom. We were able to fit all of our jewelry pieces in the box with plenty of room to spare for more rings, bracelets, or necklaces. It also comes at a very affordable price, so it's a nice gift for a friend or yourself.

The lightweight case has the perfect balance of organizational features without feeling overwhelming. There are enough ring pillows for seven rings, and we love that the dividers in the bottom compartment can be taken out and adjusted to fit chunky or delicate jewelry, The upper compartment has a mirror with small holes around the border which are ideal for stud earrings. Also, the flap opens up to reveal three fasteners and a pouch and hooks for necklaces. Because it's made with vegan leather, it's easy to wipe clean when necessary. It comes with a mirror, but it's not protected, so note that it will likely scratch after a few uses.

Size: 3.94 x 3.94 x 1.97 inches | Colors: 4 | Material: Vegan leather

Best for Long Trips

Calpak jewelry case.

The durable exterior holds up well to being tossed around.

It comes in a range of fun, bold colors.

There's a good division of space, and the jewelry pieces don't touch each other.

This doesn't have a carrying handle, which can be a little inconvenient.

If you're looking for a convenient way to store jewelry for longer trips where you'll want to travel with a variety of different jewelry pieces, it doesn't get much better than the Calpak Jewelry Case . The roomy drawstring pocket is ideal for things like bangles, chunky rings, or larger costume jewelry — it also has several interior pockets that keep jewelry separate that you can use for more valuable pieces (or even your stash of disappearing bobby pins). For daintier, more delicate necklaces, you can store them tucked into the pocket and snapped with the fastener for extra security.

In terms of durability, this scored high in our tests. We noted that the drawstring pouch was very convenient and held up pretty well even after throwing it around and tossing the contents about. Color-wise, there are three classic and three limited shades to choose from; the only real downside is the absence of a carrying handle, which isn't a dealbreaker.

Size: 7 x 5 x 2.5 inches | Colors: 6 | Material: Faux leather

We are extremely pleased with how well the Calpak Jewelry Case has held up during the past six months of testing. The condition of the case is unchanged after being dropped and squished into many totes and suitcases. When stored in this case, all of our jewelry items remain intact with no tangles. The ring holder and necklace hooks are extremely helpful, and the zipper has remained consistently smooth when opening and closing. One thing we wish it had are designated earring holes, but we appreciate the pockets and pouches that keep earrings and other small jewelry items secure.

Best for Short Trips

Mejuri jewelry case.

  • Performance 3 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

It fits easily into different types of suitcases and totes.

The suede interior is gentle on jewelry and won't scratch.

The brand offers free monogramming, making this great for gifting.

This can't accommodate larger, chunkier pieces.

Short trips call for a travel jewelry case that's easy to fill, throw into your duffel bag, and access once you get to your destination, and the Mejuri Travel Case certainly delivers. It's slightly bigger than the size of a hand and can fit three pairs of earrings as well as four necklaces and bracelets and a handful of rings.

While the case isn't as big as some of the others on our list (and therefore can't fit larger costume jewelry-type pieces), we found it to be a solid option for anyone looking to travel with their most-loved pieces, or those going on a weekend getaway with a small carry-on or tote. The suede interior is gentle on jewelry, and the leather material is easy to wipe clean. This case also makes a nice gift, especially with the free monogramming Mejuri offers.

Size: 4 x 4 x 1.4 inches | Colors: 2 | Material: Leather

Best Monogrammed

Mark & graham small travel jewelry case.

Mark & Graham

The hard exterior can handle drops and shakes, so it's great for airplane travel.

There are several color and pattern options, which is especially nice if you're considering buying two.

It's made with a pebbled vegan leather exterior and a cushioned interior with a built-in mirror.

If you have a lot of jewelry, this is not big enough for at-home storage.

It's sleek, durable, and monogrammable — the Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case is a no-brainer for those looking for a travel jewelry case that's functional and pretty. This comes in 32 color and print options (the most of any on our list) and has several font options to choose from.

Aside from being able to personalize this case, we were impressed by its performance. The exterior is hard (read: it won't change shape during transit) and made of pebbled vegan leather, while the interior looks like a jewelry tray complete with several cushioned slots (for rings or earrings) as well as rectangular compartments. Plus, this has a built-in decent-sized mirror that can double up as a close-up mirror for eyeshadow application. It also held up to tossing and shaking well. It's not large enough to be your do-it-all case for jewelry storage, but as far as travel jewelry cases go, this is a fantastic option.

Size: 4.5 x 4.5 x 2.25 inches | Colors: 32 | Material: Vegan leather

After six months of testing, this case is still in the same pristine condition as when we originally received it (despite the lighter color material). While the case would be useful for someone who prefers a personalized item in a unique pattern or color, we found that the case was too bulky for our taste. We also wished there were more dedicated spaces for earrings and fewer for rings, but again, that is just our preference.

Kendra Scott Medium Travel Jewelry Case

Kendra Scott

It has a great design with no wasted space.

It can double as an at-home jewelry box, which is nice considering the higher price tag.

This comes with a removable pouch that you can use for other items like makeup.

The exterior material became scuffed during testing.

The Kendra Scott Medium Travel Jewelry Case checks every box if a large jewelry organizer is what you're after. It has an excellent design with no wasted space. The case comes with multiple compartments to store different types of jewelry as well as a removable pouch that could be used on its own if you don't want to use the larger case. While the outside of the box was scuffed slightly during testing, the inside materials were well-cushioned and stable, and none of the pieces moved or became tangled after tossing.

It comes in four gorgeous colors, and it's large enough to throw in a checked bag, but it can also definitely be left open on your dresser for at-home use. One thing we'd like to see is necklace hooks on the upper flap.

Size: 8 x 5.5 x 2.5 inches | Colors: 4 | Material: Polyurethane

We’re still loving this jewelry case six months after we first received it. We appreciate the case's numerous compartments, durable material, and attractive appearance. The case has not developed any scratches or scuffs on the exterior or interior material. We like it so much that we leave it out as an everyday jewelry case when we’re not traveling.

Paravel Jewelry Case

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

This case can be monogrammed.

It can accommodate large pieces of jewelry.

It's Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Global Recycled Standard-approved.

It's made from durable materials.

It's not great for storing necklaces.

If you know someone who loves to accessorize while traveling, the Paravel Jewelry Case makes a wonderful gift (though you'll definitely end up wanting to snag one for yourself). With monogramming capabilities in two stylish colors, this jewelry case features one main compartment (a removable drawstring bag with six internal pockets) along with a snap tab bar for studs or small hoops as well as rings. We loved the wide capacity of the drawstring bag — it was spacious enough to hold larger pieces of jewelry (like bangles and watches) and even a pair of sunglasses. Plus, because it's a bag, it's easy to remove from the jewelry case and use on its own.

The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 and Global Recycled Standard-approved case also scored high marks for durability. Even after putting it through its paces (pushing on it and throwing it) there were no marks, and when we pressed on the top it didn't cave in at all. The material is durable and protective and the zipper is smooth. One thing to note: while you can store necklaces in the interior bag, they can easily tangle.

Size: 3.6 x 5.6 inches | Colors: 2 | Material: Canvas, vegan leather

The Paravel Jewelry Case still looks as good as the day we got it six months ago. We’ve taken it on several trips and have found that our favorite part is the convenient earring and ring storage on the top of the case. We appreciate how sturdy the case is, but it’s also a bit large and inflexible, so it takes up more space in our carry-on than we’d like. Overall, we think this is a timeless, high-quality jewelry case that’s a great option for many travelers.

Best Design

Cuyana travel jewelry case.

The soft, sturdy leather exterior holds up to scuffs and scratches.

It's available in two beautiful finishes.

The interior straps are removable, which offers versatility if you want to store larger jewelry pieces.

It would be nice to have a second removable strap for earrings.

Cuyana's oval-shaped Travel Jewelry Case won our pick for Best Design — everything from the high-quality sturdy Italian leather to the muted color palette and sleek zipper stood out to us. It also comes in two finishes, pebbled and shimmer, both of which hold up to scuffs and scratches. This case features a detachable earring strap with six holes, which can hold three pairs of earrings, and another suede strap that hangs necklaces into an elasticized pocket for tangle-free storage.

We love how small and slim this is, while still being roomy enough for a weekend's worth of jewelry. We also love its versatility in fitting into a purse, work bag , or even jacket pocket despite being barely bigger than the palm of a hand. And, because the ring and earring straps are removable, this makes more room for other items that may require additional space. If we could make one improvement, we would add another removable strap for earrings to this case.

Size: 5 x 3.5 x 1.23 inches | Colors: 6 | Material: Leather

Six months after receiving it, we are still obsessed with this jewelry case. It’s so sleek and stylish that we use it at home to store our favorite jewelry pieces. We love the versatility of the case, as it’s easy to bring on any type of trip in a purse or carry-on. Despite its compact size, it holds plenty of jewelry; we just wish it had a few more organization hooks and latches. The high-quality leather material has held up well (except for one small scuff mark that can be easily buffed out).

Best Leather

Levenger mini jewelry organizer.

The zipper is smooth and works effortlessly.

This has several compartments that keep fine jewelry secure.

The slim size is easy to pack.

It's best for short trips or those with only a few pieces of jewelry.

If you're looking for a high-quality case that gets better with time, opt for the Levenger Carrie Mini Jewelry Organizer , which is made of touchable soft pebbled leather that's accented with gold hardware. The case weighs less than half a pound and isn't much bigger than a wallet, making it the ideal organizer to throw in your tote or weekender .

Like most travel jewelry cases, this one features snaps to keep your necklaces in place along with a pouch to hang the bottom in to ensure they don't get tangled. We were also impressed with the internal zipper pouch that is a great fit for bracelets or a larger pair of earrings. Overall, this case is small and slim, but with its protected compartments, it would work well for someone looking to keep a few pieces of fine jewelry extra secure.

Size: 4.25 x 1 x 4.5 inches | Colors: 3 | Material: Leather

After six months of travel, this case has held up beautifully. We have found the case to be portable and easy to use, and it would be a great addition to a gym bag. The case feels durable, and it keeps jewelry items secure.

Other Travel Jewelry Cases We Tried

  • Away The Jewelry Box : The overall construction of this organizer felt substantial and sturdy. The compartments and snaps felt secure, and we liked the additional padded piece for extra stability, protection, and separation. However, the snap bar holding the rings came loose during testing and the top part is not hard, meaning it could be compressed and therefore damaged during long-haul traveling.
  • Beis The Hanging Jewelry Case : We like how roomy and spacious this jewelry case is as well as the space-saving aspect of a hanging organizer. It's quite long and can hold several pieces, yet it folds up quite compactly. However, getting stuff out of the top small pockets is a little tricky because the pockets don't open wide. Also, the magnetic closure came undone with tossing. We see this better suited for makeup or if you're looking for a way to pack up all your jewelry during a move.
  • Leatherology Small Jewelry Organizer : This case doesn't have any organizational features besides a small pocket on the side and a removable cinch pouch, but what stood out to us was its compact size and impressive depth — it's deep enough to fit bulkier jewelry like watches or necklaces with thick pendants. This is a simple jewelry case, and it performed as designed, but because it doesn't feature any fasteners or pockets, things like necklaces or daintier bracelets may get tangled.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Travel Jewelry Case

While the size of a potential travel jewelry case is dependent on how much you plan to accessorize and how long your trip is, it's best to pack enough jewelry that is versatile and can be worn with a variety of outfits. "This will help save on space and make staying organized easier," says Abigail Valentine, a former costume designer and current personal stylist based in Phoenix. Valentine also suggests leaving a little extra room to accommodate any shopping that is done on the trip (if you are someone who likes a sparkly souvenir).

The size of your travel jewelry case will also depend on your method of travel. If you're traveling by plane, both Valentine and Brez recommend packing your travel jewelry case in a carry-on to avoid potential lost luggage or damage from handling. This, of course, means it'll have to be compact enough to fit alongside your other carry-on belongings. "If carry-on space is an issue and you have a mix of expensive and moderately priced pieces, consider buying two smaller travel cases: One to carry on with your more expensive items and then check one with your less expensive, fun items," says Valentine.

Compartments

No matter the size of the travel jewelry case, the spacing between each piece is important. "Hooks and separate locations are very important within a jewelry case," says Karina Brez, equestrian fine jewelry designer. You should also try to avoid layering your pieces and having them touch, as this can increase the risk of scratching depending on the metal, notes Valentine. "For rings, I prefer them to be set horizontally between two cushions, rather than slip on vertically on a cushioned tube — this will prevent touching and scratching," she adds. Our best overall pick, the Bagsmart Jewelry Organizer Bag , has lots of visible compartments to organize all of your jewelry.

There are a variety of materials to choose from when choosing a travel jewelry case, but Valentine says to look for leather or faux leather since they're easy to wipe clean. The inside is also important — you'll want to opt for velvet, polyester, or suede lining as these are gentle on jewelry, are less likely to scratch, and don't attract too much dust. Our pick for the best travel jewelry case for weekend trips (and one of Oprah's favorite things), the Benevolence Plush Velvet Jewelry Travel Case , has a velvet lining to keep your jewelry gently in place.

Storage Type

"I definitely recommend ring holders, earring panels with holes, and zippers for necklaces and bracelets," says Brez. "Ideally, there would be all three within the jewelry case and hopefully multiple of each." Hooks and pouches for necklaces are a must for more delicate necklaces, while the option to customize the pads will give you the most versatility when packing a travel jewelry case, says Valentine.

Our PEOPLE Tested team tried out 25 travel jewelry cases. For each case, we looked at ease of use, capacity, design, and performance, eventually narrowing it down to ones that stood out from the rest.

  • Packing Test: To start, we packed each travel jewelry case according to one standard packing list that consisted of three necklaces, three rings, two bracelets, one watch, and four earrings (one post, one hoop clasp, and two earrings of the tester's choice). Our testers looked at how sturdy the travel jewelry case seemed and if the materials seemed protective. They also took into account any design features such as buttons, fasteners, dividers, and straps that made packing easier.
  • Damage Test: After packing, they decided if each travel jewelry case was best fit for a suitcase, weekender, and/or a tote and if it was versatile enough for at-home storage. They then gave the travel jewelry case a vigorous shake, tossed it in the air, and dropped it on the ground. Our testers were told to open the travel jewelry case and examine all contents inside, taking note of any pieces of jewelry that came loose from where they packed it, got tangled together, or were damaged.
  • Ease of Use: Finally, our testers were instructed to remove one pair of earrings, one necklace, and one ring from the travel jewelry case, as if they were going to wear them. They cited how easy it was to do so or if it was time-consuming and tedious to get to the desired piece based on the damage test.

While some people opt for traveling with their jewelry pieces in a pouch, a travel jewelry case provides the most security. The best way to keep your jewelry from being damaged when traveling is to avoid overstuffing the travel case, says Valentine. "If you need more space, consider buying two of the travel cases you like or look for a bigger option — the goal is to keep everything separate and secured."

You'll also want to ensure all organizers are buttoned and zipped up. If you really want to be careful, Brez recommends packaging up anything that might come in contact with another piece of jewelry in individual tissues before placing it into your travel jewelry case.

This depends on how much jewelry you like to wear, but, generally speaking, Valentine says to look for a travel jewelry case that can hold at least three to five necklaces, four to six rings, and two to five small earrings. There should also be an area big enough for a moderate-sized bangle or statement earring. "If you are someone who really likes accessories, I suggest looking for a bigger case that rolls or hangs with individual compartments," she says. If you're looking for a small and slim travel jewelry case for a short trip, the Levenger Mini Jewelry Organizer is a great choice. For longer trips (or more jewelry options), we recommend the Kendra Scott Medium Travel Jewelry Case .

A tabloid testimony in Trump's hush money trial

Former National Enquirer boss David Pecker's testimony Tuesday at Donald Trump’s hush-money trial illustrated the prosecution’s argument that Trump participated in a conspiracy to kill unflattering news stories specifically to influence the 2016 election.

This conflicts with claims by Trump's defense team that the stories were meant to spare his family embarrassment.

  • The former tabloid publisher testified he promised to notify Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen of any women selling stories on Trump.

US campuses brace for more unrest over Israel-Hamas war

Chaotic situations hang in the balance Wednesday at NYU, Columbia and elsewhere as colleges across the nation grappled with unrest after days of demonstrations, campus closures and arrests swirling around U.S. support for Israel in its war on Hamas. Dennis Mitsunaga’s ‘Ninja’ Testifies That ‘It Felt A Little Wrong’ To Contact Witness In Corruption Case

Mitsunaga, charged in the federal bribery trial of former Honolulu prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro, is accused of attempting to manipulate a witness's testimony.

Mitsunaga, charged in the federal bribery trial of former Honolulu prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro, is accused of attempting to manipulate a witness’s testimony.

An employee of architectural firm CEO and defendant Dennis Mitsunaga testified Tuesday that he asked her to communicate with an upcoming witness on his behalf in the ongoing bribery trial of former Honolulu prosecutor Keith Kaneshiro.

Joanna Kameoka, who works for Mitsunaga’s engineering firm, Mitsunaga & Associates Inc., told jurors she met with him on April 1 at his home office, where he told her she needed to talk to Rudy Alivado, a longtime friend of Mitsunaga’s and a government witness in the ongoing trial. Mitsunaga is under a court order not to contact witnesses.

“It felt a little wrong,” Kameoka said. “I didn’t want to get involved between two people that couldn’t talk to each other.”

Alivado also told jurors Tuesday that Mitsunaga & Associates lawyer Sheri Tanaka coached him before he testified in two separate legal matters — a 2014 civil trial involving Mitsunaga and former employee Laurel Mau and a 2021 grand jury hearing for this criminal case.

Mitsunaga, who is facing federal charges that he conspired to bribe Kaneshiro, has been held in the Federal Detention Center since he was arrested Friday and accused of obstruction of justice and witness tampering.

Judge Timothy Burgess ruled Tuesday morning that the jury could hear evidence about the alleged witness tampering but could only consider it for its bearing on Mitsunaga’s “consciousness of guilt of the offenses charged in the indictment.” He instructed them not to weigh the evidence against any other defendants.

Kaneshiro, Mitsunaga and Tanaka — as well as Mitsunaga & Associates secretary Terri Ann Otani, chief operating officer Aaron Fujii and president Chad Michael McDonald — are all charged with multiple counts of conspiracy to commit fraud and violate a person’s rights. They have all pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Communicating With A Witness

Kameoka said she met with Alivado on April 2 under the guise that she was going to take pictures of his Waimanalo farm.

Before her visit, Mitsunaga had told her about discrepancies in Alivado’s testimonies in the two separate legal matters, and that what he said during the 2014 civil lawsuit was more favorable to Mitsunaga. She gave him copies of transcripts of the two testimonies.

“The 2014 trial testimony was good for them and was public record,” Kameoka said. “But the grand jury testimony wasn’t good for them, and unless Rudy testifies they can’t use it.”

Dennis Mitsunaga appeared in federal court on Nov. 7, 2023 with his attorney Nina Marino. (Christina Jedra/CivilBeat/2023)

Mitsunaga told her to tell Alivado to plead the Fifth Amendment when he took the stand and invoke his right against self-incrimination.

After meeting with Alivado, Kameoka met Mitsunaga for lunch outside the courtroom where the trial is being conducted on the fourth floor of the federal courthouse.

“He asked me if I talked to (Alivado) and I said yes,” she said. “He asked me if he understood. I said I don’t know. I said I did what I could.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Chiang pulled up a text message Mitsunaga sent to Kameoka that day in which he called her a “ninja.”

Kameoka said Mitsunaga didn’t come up with the nickname, but it was something people called her because she was known for getting things done behind the scenes.

“It’s not as sinister as it seems,” she said.

Mitsunaga’s lawyer, Nina Marino, portrayed Mitsunaga as a caring friend who was concerned Alivado could be accused of perjury if he testified due to the discrepancies in his two past testimonies. The two men are longtime friends, and Mitsunaga simply wanted Kameoka to warn Alivado about the danger he was in, Marino said.

“He was worried that these lawyers would make Rudy look like a big liar because he had what he believed to be two inconsistent testimonies,” she said.

Witness Says He Was Coached Prior To Testimony

Alivado, who took the stand after Kameoka, told jurors when she passed him his grand jury transcripts on April 2 he felt that something illegal had occurred.

When he told investigators about what had happened, he said he and Kameoka had met at Zippy’s because he didn’t want his Waimanalo farm “to be the scene of the crime committed.”

Alivado also said Tanaka coached him about his testimony before the civil trial and grand jury hearing.

Before the civil trial, Tanaka asked him to “respond to questions for the benefit of Mitsunaga & Associates,” he said.

Laurel Mau enters the Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole Federal Building and United States Courthouse for the Kaneshiro corruption trial Thursday, April 4, 2024, in Honolulu. (Kevin Fujii/Civil Beat/2024)

In that trial, Alivado testified about payments he gave to Laurel Mau for work she did on his Kaneohe property in 2008 and 2009 while she was still an employee of Mitsunaga & Associates. Alivado testified at the time he thought the $2,800 he paid her was going to the firm.

That claim later became part of a theft case Kaneshiro’s office brought against Mau, and Alivado was named as a victim.

But Alivado said it was a lie that he thought the payments were intended for the firm, and he always meant to pay Mau directly.

“I didn’t feel like I was a victim,” he said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Wheat asked him why he lied in the civil trial.

“I think because of my friendship with Dennis (Mitsunaga) and loyalty to the firm who did so much for me,” Alivado said. Mitsunaga and Alivado had purchased properties in Kaneohe together and the firm helped him build his home, he said.

But when he got a subpoena in 2021 to testify before a grand jury, he said he was surprised. He met with Tanaka, who coached him again and encouraged him to plead the Fifth Amendment.

Mitsunaga has been ordered to remain in custody for the duration of the trial, and the defendants have had their access to trial materials further restricted, according to an order filed Tuesday by Burgess. They are prohibited from possessing grand jury or discovery material, are only allowed to review it in the presence of lawyers and are not allowed to give copies of the materials to any witnesses or third parties, the order says.

Central figure in Operation Blooming Onion plans to take her case to trial

braces travel case

Maria Patricio, the central figure in Operation Blooming Onion, one of the largest U.S. human trafficking cases ever prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice (USDOJ), plans to take her case to trial, according to a court document filed in federal court on April 18. Although all pretrial motions have been satisfied, neither Patricio and her attorney nor the DOJ prosecutor are prepared for trial, according to the same court filing.

The court filing is the latest update in the Operation Blooming Onion case, a saga that has stretched on since the DOJ unsealed the indictment in early December 2021.

The court document surfaces about two months after SMN reported that two defendants pleaded guilty to charges in the case, and eight defendants planned to plead guilty. Of those eight defendants, three pled guilty in a case attended by SMN .

Barry L. Paschal, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Georgia, declined to comment.

When reached for comment, a representative with Patricio’s law firm, Juanita Holsey of the Holsey Law Firm, said the attorney wasn’t interested in speaking about the case.

More: Eight of 24 defendants in Georgia's largest human trafficking case plan to plead guilty

More: Three of 24 defendants in Georgia's largest human trafficking case plead guilty

Who is Maria Patricio?

In October 2021, a grand jury indicted 24 people for conspiring to engage in forced labor and other related crimes. Federal prosecutors say the defendants required guest farmworkers to pay illegal fees to obtain jobs, withheld their IDs so they could not leave, made them work for little or no pay, housed them in unsanitary conditions and threatened them with deportation and violence. Two workers died in the heat, according to the indictment. Court records say five workers were kidnapped and one of them was raped.

Following the announcement of Operation Blooming Onion, investigative reporting by USA Today, the Augusta Chronicle and the Savannah Morning News revealed that  two Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) officials whose jobs involved protecting or advocating for farmworkers had links to Patricio , who was 70 years old at the time of the indictment. That story found that Jorge Gomez, a GDOL state monitor advocate who has since retired, is the brother of Patricio. While not indicted, his home was searched as part of the case.

Subsequent investigations found that a federal agent  testified that GDOL officials were bribed by the alleged Patricio trafficking organization related to farmworker housing inspections , and a  Georgia state senator routinely hired a family of farm labor contractors linked to Operation Blooming Onion .

Multiple civil lawsuits have also arisen from the trafficking charges.  One civil lawsuit  filed on April 5, 2023, in federal court by  the Vedder Price law firm , consists of former workers claiming that Maria Patricio and two alleged traffickers forced them to work in dangerous conditions with little to no pay, housed them in rundown motels and trailers, and subjected them to physical and mental abuse.

Federal judge grants Patricio's request for travel again

On April 18, Federal Magistrate Judge Benjamin W. Cheeseboro also denied eight of Patricio’s previous requests, calling them “moot.” As such, Cheeseboro canceled a motion hearing previously scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 19 in Waycross Federal Court.

The requests Cheeseboro canceled;

  • A request to view notes by any government witness;
  • A request to allow the attorney to inspect and copy any statements made by Patricio;
  • A request to obtain Brady materials, including investigations against the police officers and federal agents who investigated the case;
  • A request for the government to “preserve and retain intact and not to destroy or alter” any investigative reports, surveillance video and other physical evidence in its possession, which may have been “necessary or helpful to a proper resolution of the case.”
  • A request for the government to disclose the name of its witnesses, which would have afforded Patricio “the opportunity to interview them to fully prepare her defense.”
  • A request to see the name, identity, and whereabouts of any informant who gave information leading to Patricio’s arrest or indictment, as well as whether said informant was paid by the Government for such information;
  • A request for production and inspection of grand jury proceedings;
  • A request for the government to disclose expert witness testimony

Throughout the trial, Patricio has requested eleven motions for travel - all of which have been granted by the court. Patricio frequently travels to Las Vegas, Nevada, to attend a PROMOTORES Unidos and LENUSA Conference.

On April 8, the court granted a similar travel request to Patricio. Cheeseboro “ordered [Patricio] to communicate with her supervising probation officer as directed and must follow all instructions provided by her supervising probation officer related to travel. Moreover, all other conditions of release are unaffected by this modification and are still in effect.”

California Governor Newsom launches abortion travel ban ad campaign in Alabama

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: April 22, 2024 / 1:41 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking aim at states considering abortion travel bans with the launch of a new ad campaign.

Newsom's Campaign for Democracy ad is set to air in Alabama starting Monday. The governor tweeted out the ad in a social media post Sunday morning.

Alabama’s abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women’s travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this. pic.twitter.com/gHbYJYlEXk — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) April 21, 2024

The text with the video post reads, "Alabama's abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women's travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this."

The 30-second commercial shows two nervous young women driving in a car passing a sign that reads "State Line 1 Mile."

"We're almost there. You're gonna make it," the passenger tells the woman behind the wheel just before they hear a siren and are pulled over by a state trooper.

"Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care," a voiceover says as the state trooper walks up to the car.

"Miss, I'm going to need you to step out of the vehicle and take a pregnancy test," the trooper says, waving a test stick in one hand. The next shot shows the driver leaning on the hood of her car as the trooper puts her in handcuffs.

"Stop them by taking action at RightToTravel.org ," the voiceover intones as the ad ends.

Alabama is currently weighing a bill that would make it a crime to help women travel outside the state in order to receive an abortion. The ad is part of a larger effort to combat travel bans across the United States. Newsom was behind a similar ad that ran in Tennessee.

The RightToTravel.org website says that those two states and Oklahoma are considering bills that ban minors from traveling out of state to get an abortion without parental consent, even if it's a case of incest or if there is abuse in the family.

It isn't the first action the governor has taken in the political battle over abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June of 2022. Two days after the ruling, Newsom partnered with the governors of Oregon and Washington to issue a multi-state commitment promising to defend access to reproductive health care, including abortion and contraceptives.

In September of that year, he launched a billboard campaign in seven of the most restrictive anti-abortion states urging women seeking the procedure to come to California for treatment. He also signed more than a dozen new abortion laws  protecting women's reproductive rights and ordered the state to end its contract with Walgreens after the pharmacy giant  indicated it would not sell an abortion pill by mail in some conservative-led states .
