Everyone knows by now that Colorado is a mecca of craft breweries. They seem to pop up on another corner every week. Many of them offer free tours and even they don’t, they’ll still let you sample a few of their products.

brewery tour in colorado

You can make a fun day out of touring breweries in the craft towns of Boulder and Fort Collins. Boulder’s well-known brewers include Avery, Boulder Beer, and Upslope. And if you have extra time, Longmont’s not far and features the fan-favorite Oskar Blues. Fort Collins has Odell, in addition to Budweiser and New Belgium. All are within a few minutes of each too.

No matter where you are in the Centennial State, a microbrewery is probably not far off. Even when there’s none, you can usually sample a wide variety of craft beer at a local bar. Mile High Happy Hour shows more than a thousand Denver happy hours for those in the capital region.

Beer Walking Tour: LoDo to LoHi

Here's a walking tour that takes you from LoDo (Lower Downtown) to LoHi (Lower Highland), visiting several beer hotspots along the way.

Wynkoop Brewing Company

Colorado's first brewpub opened in 1988 and was founded by a group of young urban pioneers that included John Hickenlooper, who went on to serve as Mayor of Denver for seven years and as the Governor of Colorado for two terms (the first former brewer to be elected as a state governor since Sam Adams in 1794). Today, the  Wynkoop Brewing Company  is the center of LoDo — Denver's hip historic district where century-old warehouses have been turned into more than 90 bars, brewpubs, restaurants and cafes.

Guided Private Tours

Denver microbrew tour.

Find out why Denver has been dubbed the "Napa Valley of Beer." The  Denver Microbrew Tour  is a 1.5-mile guided walking tour in downtown Denver's historic  LoDo  (lower downtown) neighborhood. The tour includes 10 samples at four of downtown's best breweries and tap rooms, including  Wynkoop Brewing Company   and  Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery . The guides are bona fide Denver brew aficionados, so you'll come out of this tour knowing more about beer than you ever thought possible. If street art is more your scene, join their RiNo Beer and Graffiti Tour, which winds past colorful murals in the River North Art District (RiNo)  on its path to four breweries (and possibly a cidery!).

Aspire Tours' Brews n' Views Tour

Get out into the mountains and sample the best of the Colorado brewing scene with Aspire Tours . On this small-group tour, you'll learn the history of brewing in the area and enjoy stunning views while you visit three breweries in mountain towns (including historic  Golden ) on this half-day tour.

Denver Brew Tours

Take a private tour of Denver's best breweries with up to 14 of your closest friends with Denver Brew Tours . What makes this tour different? YOU pick the breweries! Choose from any of the more than 100 local breweries in and around Denver and Boulder, or pick from Denver Brew Tours' list of nearly 50 partner breweries, grouped by region so your can maximize your time. With Denver Brew Tours, you're in control of everything except the driving. Prefer to keep your feet on the ground? The company also offers a walking tour of Denver’s Tennyson Street Cultural District, including tasting flights at three local breweries.

Mile High Bike Tours' Bike & Brew Tour

See some of the city’s best attractions by bicycle, including diverse public art, government buildings, beautiful parks, distinct architecture and all three professional sports arenas. Then, head to RiNo to sample some of Denver’s finest craft beer at a local hotspot on this approximately nine-mile, three-hour, fun-filled excursion.

Wynkoop's architecture is typical of the neighborhood, with hardwood floors, exposed brick walls covered with artwork and big open windows. The second floor of the huge pub has 22 pool tables, multiple dart boards and other bar games. There are always more than a dozen craft beers on tap. The flagship beer (available in cans) is Rail Yard Amber Ale, a smooth amber with the malty flavor of an Oktoberfest lager. For a true Colorado experience, try Patty's Chile Beer, a German-style lager made with chiles and smoked Ancho peppers.

Direction to next stop:  Walk west on Wynkoop two blocks to the 16th Street Mall, then turn left and walk seven blocks to Curtis.

Rock Bottom Brewery

Today,  Rock Bottom Brewery  is a major chain with more than 30 breweries that produce 700 different craft beers that have won over 125 medals. But their brewery in Denver is the "mother ship," the first brewery of the chain when it opened in 1990. Rock Bottom has one of the best locations on the 16th Street Mall, Denver's mile-long pedestrian promenade. There are 41 outdoor patios along the Mall, but the one at Rock Bottom is the largest and one of the most popular. On summer weekends, bands play and hundreds of people gather to sip craft beer on the patio under twinkling lights, as horse-drawn carriages clatter by. The interior of the massive bar is built around towering glass windows displaying the brewing equipment. It can be noisy, crowded and fun, as the bar brings in an attractive crowd of young downtown office workers. For a quieter experience, head to the back bar, which has pool tables and a staff that's both knowledgeable and passionate about craft beer. Rock Bottom features the standard IPAs, Red Ale, White Ale, Dark Ale and a Winter Tartan Ale, as well as the always popular Molly's Titanic Brown Ale. The brewmaster at each pub creates specials, so check what's on the current beer list, and especially look for the hand-pulled cask-conditioned ales in the back room.

Direction to next stop:  Catch the free MallRide bus at the corner of 16th and Curtis and take it north to the final stop at the Union Station Light Rail. Walk back to 16th Street and over the Millennium Bridge (easily identifiable by the tall white mast). Continue straight through the Riverfront development and across Commons Park to a second pedestrian bridge over the South Platte River. On the other side of the bridge, walk one block to Platte Street and turn right. Denver Beer Company is on the far side of the street.

denver-beer-company-patio-hops

Take a seat outside and enjoy the sunshine at Denver Beer Co.

Denver Beer Company

Denver Beer Company  is one of the city's favorite tap rooms — a place that really captures the laid-back feeling of The Mile High City. Located in a former auto garage, on warm days the "walls" of the pub literally roll up, making the whole building open air. There's an outdoor patio with picnic tables next to a space where different food trucks park every day.

Denver Beer serves only delicious homemade pretzels and beer, but you're welcome to bring your own food or purchase food at the rotating food trucks. Dogs are welcome too, and it's a rare day when there aren't at least a few pups at the bar or on the patio. Owners Charlie and Patrick began as home brewers and are dedicated to making the finest and most inventive beers in the city. There are usually a dozen small-batch beers on tap that rotate regularly. Check the chalkboard to see what's available. If Graham Cracker Porter is on tap, make that your choice. It's been described as "a campfire in a glass with notes of vanilla, smoked cedar and mulling spices." This is a neighborhood bar where people stop in after a bike ride or a run. Even Denver Mayor Michael Hancock is a fan — he helped Patrick and Charlie make a pumpkin ale here to kick off Denver Beer Fest in 2012.

Direction to next stop:  Turn right from the brewery and in a half block, head west over a third pedestrian bridge, which crosses I-25. Continue up 16th Street as it changes into Tejon Street, then turn right onto Erie Street just past Hirshorn Park. Turn left on 17th Street and walk up one block to your next destination, on your right.

Recess Beer Garden

After crossing the bridge, you've entered LoHi, one of Denver's hippest and fastest-growing neighborhoods. Before you reach your next destination, stop on 16th Street when you see a 30-foot-high milk can. This is the legendary  Little Man Ice Cream , where they produce hand-made, small-batch ice cream, created with some of the finest local ingredients. Relax with a triple scoop (we're partial to the Salted Oreo) in their outdoor ice cream garden. For those poor souls who have trouble with milk? They sell a Lactaid pill for 50 cents!

Now, on to the next sip. Recess Beer Garden  is a great introduction to this section of town. Although no beer is brewed here, Recess offers 24 beers on tap, including plenty of local and Colorado drafts, along with out-of-state brews, ciders, seltzers, wine, cocktails and kombucha. The staff is beer savvy and will work with you to find the perfect selection, whether it's light, hoppy, malty or complex. Post up in the beer garden with some friends as you play yard games and enjoy everything Denver and Colorado have to offer.

Directions to next stop:  Exiting Recess, turn right and then take another immediate right onto 32nd Avenue. Walk two and a half blocks east until you reach a sharp turn in the road — and your next destination.

Avanti F & B

If all this walking has worked up an appetite, end your night with dinner (and another beer) at  Avanti F & B , one of Denver's most popular spots for foodies. Inspired by European markets and food-truck roundups, Avanti bills itself as a modern-day food hall, offering up seven different restaurant concepts under one roof. Grab a Neapolitan-style pizza, some TexMex BBQ or a traditional arepa. There are also two large bars — one upstairs and one downstairs — with 20 draft beers on tap, many from local breweries.

Directions to next stop:  Return to the Light Rail station the same way you came. From here, you can catch the free shuttle to anywhere on the 16th Street Mall.

Brewery Tours Outside of Denver

You'll taste and talk about the company's different beers and how they're made. Tours cost $3 and begin and end in the tasting room. We recommend grabbing a meal at the excellent Farm House Restaurant while you're there.

You can also visit their newest location: Left Hand RiNo . The Denver outpost is a  full-service restaurant and bar, with 48 taps (including, of course, Left Hand's award-winning beers), along with wine, sake and cocktails.

Fort Collins Colorado Brewery Tours

Fort Collins  Colorado Brewery tours are perfectly nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with fresh snowmelt running off into the Cache la Poudre River making it an ideal place for brewing some of the nation’s best beer. Fort Collins is the largest producer of craft beer in Colorado (responsible for 70%, in fact), which is ironic for a town that was “dry” until 1969. Currently, the city is home to more than 20 craft breweries, the most microbreweries in the state, each with its own distinctive style, including one of the world’s largest operations, as well as a leader in eco-friendly and sustainable business practices. To get a taste of award-winning lagers, pilsners and ales year-round, take part of some brewery tours and a wild variety of taster trays, even spend a few days to taste them all!

A large percentage of Fort Collins breweries are located within  historic Downtown , including industry leaders  New Belgium Brewing  and gold medal winning  Odell Brewing Company , all within walking and bicycling distance, making visiting them easy to do in one trip. The beer lover can also take guided tours providing insider knowledge plus transportation between each brewery making for a perfect beer day. One of the best and most fun ways to gain this insider knowledge is signing up for brewery tours with Beer and Bike Tours . Fort Collins has experienced a boom in brewery growth in the past decade, bringing breweries to all areas of the city, including  South Fort Collins ,  Midtown  and the CSU campus.

Fort Collins produces beers of every type, including a local passion for IPAs, tasty stouts, collaboration ales between all breweries, and extremely drinkable wheat beers. These passions make Fort Collins a perfect beer lovers’ and homebrewers’ paradise. Brewing stores offer hard to find hops, malts, tools of the trade and experts to consult.

Bicycles have a close relationship to the beer in Fort Collins with New Belgium Brewing Company’s affinity for bicycles, including the annual  Tour de Fat  bike parade & festival, bike and beer tours, keg delivery by bicycle, bike paths linking breweries together, and a bike share  rental program through Spin.

If you want to see the inner workings of the brewing process you can sign up to take brewery tours at Odell Brewing Company and New Belgium Brewing Company. Or you can hop on a bike and ride from brewery to brewery with Beer and Bike Tours . Bottling and canning lines, sustainable practices, water and green energy initiatives and tasting insights are all part of what you learn on the tours.

Now set out on your taste bud adventure to some of these high quality Fort Collins breweries!

Get to know Fort Collins' Breweries

C.B. & Potts

C.B. & Potts Restaurant and Brewery has been a Colorado front range tradition since 1974.  Featureing quality food, award winning beverages and medal winning craft brewed ales ad lagers in a casual family friendly atmosphere. (1441 E Horsetooth Road)

CooperSmith’s Pub and Brewing

This is the perfect place for a bite to eat with your brews. CooperSmith’s is the longest operating brewery in Fort Collins, opening just two weeks before Odell Brewing Co., Nov. 1989, and is an anchor business in historic downtown.  Their specialty beers such as Albert Damm Bitter and Punjabi India Ale are served in the English tradition, dispensed from hand-drawn “Beer Engines” that pull in nitrogen from the atmosphere to give the beer a nice creamy head. (#5 Old Town Square)

DC Oakes Brewhouse and Eatery

DC Oakes was named after Daniel Chessman Oakes who was one of the earliest settlers in Colorado. This brewery pays homage to Oakes’ pioneering spirit by emulating his tireless work ethic through the passion of making hand-crafted beer. DC Oakes also serves up great tasting food, along with classic cocktails, wine and other local beers on tap as well as their own. (3581 E Harmony Rd #110)

Equinox Brewing

Equinox is inspired by the balance and intrigue of the equinox and the changing of seasons, which brings a dynamic twist to their beers. Traditional styles, innovation and honoring history all while respecting each distinctive ingredient is Equinox’s approach to the brewing creative process.  A cozy outdoor patio that is always buzzing, live music and very tasty brews makes this a must stop. Enjoy many rotating selections and special firkin tapping every Thursday (133 Remington St.)

This brewery focuses primarily on Saisons, with fruity aromas, and often offers drier profiles which become wonderful summer beers made by the masters. Funkwerks has won many medals in the past 5 years, and in 2012 The Great American Beer Festival named them “Small Brewing Company of the Year”. Their “Deceit”, Belgian-Style Golden Strong beer was awarded a silver medal in 2014 at the World Beer Cup. Refreshing and award-winning, a must stop along your tour. (1900 East Lincoln Ave)

Gilded Goat Brewing Co.

This is a small, family-owned and operated neighborhood brewery in the heart of Fort Collins next door to Trader Joe’s. They serve a mix of classic styles, experimental batches, and sour beers in a very comfortable taproom. Stop by and check out the club-level seating so you can see the brewhouse in action or, if you prefer, stay for a guided tasting session. They also have a location in Downtown Fort Collins with a quaint backyard patio (3500 S College Ave #194 & 132 W Mountain Ave)

Hello Brew Co.

Hello Brew Co. is a brewery-taproom located in a 120-year-old home in the Fort Collins River District.  This small taproom offers a minimalist yet homey environment. Hello Brew Co. is focused on providing contemporary IPAs and Czech-style Pilsners. (405 Linden St.)

Horse and Dragon Brewing Co.

Horse and Dragon is a local Fort Collins’ favorite that includes a skilled master brewer and owners with years of beer industry experience. Their motto is: work & family, hops & malt, Horse & Dragon. They craft high-quality, great-tasting beers sustainably while building community in the heart of Northern Colorado. (124 Racquette Dr.)

Intersect Brewing

Intersect is a local, neighborhood-focused craft brewery. Family, bike, and dog friendly, with a taproom and beer garden. Quick access to the Spring Creek trail at Drake and Taft Hill. Craft beer brewed in High Fidelity. (2160 W. DRAKE RD. A-1)

The Jessup Farm Barrel House

This brewery is extremely unique thanks in part to the brewery being housed in a 133-year-old, 3,000 square-foot restored barn that sits on the 13-acre Jessup Farm Artisan Village. The Barrel House is known for blending beers with barrels used for wine, bourbon and other specialty barrel-aged beer in order to create intricate flavors derived from the attributes of those barrels. (1921 Jessup Dr.)

Maxline Brewing

Maxline has a commitment to quality malts, hops, water, and yeast that matches their passion for brewing enticing beer. This brewery has a focus on supporting the community, as each member of the company dedicates six hours each month volunteering at local non-profits and sustainable farms. (2701 S. College Ave. Suite 190)

Mythmaker Brewing

Mythmaker Brewing is a taproom brewery located in west Fort Collins. Mythmaker Brewing believes the Craft Beer Industry is undergoing constant evolution. The mission at Mythmaker is to brew craft beer in both traditional and experimental ways and to mesh old traditions and new experiences together in a local, community driven, hospitality focused environment. Their small batch brew system ensures a constantly changing beer list for your exploratory palate. With up to 17 beers of all varieties from pale to black, sweet to sour, or experimental to historical on tap, we're sure you'll find your current favorite! (1035 S Taft Hill Rd.)

New Belgium Brewing Co.

Born on a bike, New Belgium Brewing is recognized as a leader in sustainability and social responsibility. Founded in 1991 by a homebrewer and social worker in Fort Collins, Colorado, New Belgium Brewing believes in the true idea of craft, a set of skills honed over time.  The company expanded to Asheville, North Carolina in 2016 and Denver, Colorado in 2018 and is now the 4th largest craft brewery in the U.S. Dedicated to proving that business can be a force for good, New Belgium is a Certified B Corp and was the first brewery to join 1% for the Planet. The brewery has donated over $26 million to charitable causes since 1991. New Belgium is famous for its flagship beer, Fat Tire Amber Ale, along with year-round favorites like Voodoo Ranger IPA, Mural Agua Fresca Cerveza, and La Folie Sour Brown Ale; as well as an award-winning wood-aged sour program and innovative limited release beers. To learn more about the full product lineup and New Belgium’s Human Powered Business model, visit NewBelgium.com. (500 Linden St.)

Odell Brewing Co.

Odell has the honor of being the first ‘packaging craft brewery’ in Fort Collins after opening its doors just two weeks after CooperSmith’s Brew Pub, the first brewery pub in Fort Collins.  Home brewer Doug Odell opened his craft brewery in November 1989.  In addition to their original 90 Shilling, a rich amber ale, Odell’s popular brews include Easy Street Wheat, a Gold Medal Winner at the 2005 Great American Beer Festival; 5 Barrel Pale Ale; Levity Golden Amber and Isolation Ale, available from November to March. A go-to brewery for locals and visitors, this taproom has been expanded to keep up with demand. Live music, food trucks and a warm fire pit also make the Odell patio a regional destination. (800 East Lincoln Ave.)

Peculier Ales Fort Collins

Peculier Brewing Co. is a distinguished craft brewery that prides itself on its unique blend of tradition and innovation. Nestled within an industrial brewhouse, the company has managed to carve out a niche for itself in the competitive Fort Collins brewing scene. The company's ethos: ”Beer Set Apart", is perfectly encapsulated by every beer’s unique creativity, set apart by its flavor, texture, and the craftsmanship that goes into its brewing. (1831 E Mulberry St.)

Prost Brewing Company

Prost is one of the first companies/breweries in Fort Collins to have an alley entrance for patrons, making it quite unique. This alleyway taproom is a homecoming of sorts for the Denver-based craft brewery thanks in part to Prost Brewing having an ownership team composed of multiple CSU alumnus. The Gold-medal-winning brewery makes German-style lagers exclusively and serves them in a Bavarian-themed taproom. Prost will only be serving its own beers at the Fort Collins satellite location, and for the time being, every beer will be brewed at the Denver location and delivered to Fort Collins. (1510 S College Ave.)

Purpose Brewing and Cellars

Former 1933 Brewing owners, Zach and Laura Wilson, Purpose Brewing paired with longtime New Belgium brewmaster Peter Bouckaert and his wife Frezi to launch Purpose Brewing and Cellars. Purpose has introduced a new concept to the Fort Collins brewing scene where beers change weekly and are never repeated. “We believe that everything in life has a purpose. Our purpose is to use a thoughtful, artistic, collaborative and authentic approach to craft one-of-a-kind coffees and beers. Our mission at Purpose Brewing and Cellars is to inspire creativity, promote craftsmanship, and support our local community.” (4025 S Mason St Unit C)

Rally King Brewing

This brewery opened its doors in 2015, Rally King has since become a favorite neighborhood brewery for Midtown locals and other craft beer lovers. Located right off of the Spring Creek Trail, this family run brewery with a 7 barrel system, is kid, dog, and bike friendly and offers a variety of brews from European style Ales to IPA’s to sours. Releasing new beers 2-3 times per month, Rally King offers delicious one of a kind beers to please any palate! (1624 S Lemay Ave #4)

(1802 Laporte Ave)

Beer Tasting

Boulder beer tours and experiences.

Boulder boasts one of the highest concentrations of breweries per capita in the country, leading beer connoisseurs to call the area (along with nearby Fort Collins and Denver) the "Napa Valley of Beer." The city is home to Colorado's first microbrewery, as well as the Brewers Association and the American Homebrewers Association. With so much craft beer street cred, it's not surprising that Boulder offers numerous guided brewery tours and beer-tasting experiences!

COME AND TAKE A TOUR AT

COLORADO'S FIRST BREWPUB

Brewery tours.

Since our start in 1988, Wynkoop Brewing Company has been a pioneer on the American beer landscape. We were the first brewpub in the now beer-rich, craft beer heaven of Colorado.

Our thirst for beers beyond the status quo led us to hand craft porters, meads and cask-conditioned beers (we were cask when cask wasn’t cool) and other current craft beer fixtures that beer lovers had never tasted before. Now is your chance to see behind the scenes!

PUBLIC TOURS

Unfortunately, we currently aren’t able to offer public tours, but please check back soon as we look forward to the time where we can once again have our guests stroll through the historic J.S. Brown Mercantile building sampling Wynkoop beers along the way.

PRIVATE GROUP TOURS

For guests that are looking for a personalized, custom experience, we are often able to provide a private tour. Call or complete the form below and one of our team members will follow up to discuss the details.

See where the magic happens — with a beer in hand, of course.

brewery tour in colorado

Do you love craft beer?  Want to get out and see the beautiful state of Colorado?  Do you live along the Front Range and want to visit western Colorado breweries, but aren’t sure how to go about it?  For those who answered “Yes!” to these questions, this is the seventh article in a series of Colorado Brewery Tours that maps out a route of 10 to 18 breweries you can easily visit over an extended-weekend trip.  The previous articles included a Southwest CO Tour , a South Central CO Tour , a San Juan Mountains Tour , a Central Western CO Tour , a Grand Junction Area Tour , and a Vail & Aspen Tour .

Denver is the starting point for each tour since the majority of those that read the Colorado Brewery List blog are from this metropolitan area.  However, you can adjust the maps quite easily to start your tour from another location.  Each day includes a Google Maps™ link for that day’s destinations.  These are a great springboard for planning your personal itinerary.

Most of the tours that I’ve designed are for a full three-day weekend.  This allows for full enjoyment of multiple breweries per day often with some time to spare for other activities.

While I did not include each brewery’s hours of operation, in many cases I start each day at the earliest opening brewery and finish it at the last to close.  Before your tour, be certain to double check that the breweries you want to visit will be open at the time of your visit because operating hours have a tendency to change depending on season, holiday, and anticipated traffic volume.

The best way to undertake these tours is to have a designated driver, who you should shower with praise, free meals, and gifts.  Regardless, I have designed these tours to usually include no more than three or four breweries before checking into your hotel and then walking to the rest of the locations where you and your designated driver can enjoy yourselves fully.

Before we get started on the Summit County Tour, I’d like to thank Jeff Parker for his help.  While I designed the plan for this tour series , most of the brewery descriptions and pictures are his contribution.

Summit County Tour (9 Breweries)

On this tour you’ll visit all of the breweries in the Summit County towns of Breckenridge, Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon, and Keystone.  On both Friday and Saturday, I suggest getting a hotel near the end of the route that day and then walking to your remaining locations.  Keep in mind that you’ll be drinking beers in the high country.  Breckenridge sits at 9,600 feet above sea level !

Friday (4 breweries: 2 in Breckenridge and 2 in Frisco)

You’ll start off this tour in downtown Breckenridge, where you will find the oldest Summit County brewery, Breckenridge Brewery & Pub .  Having opened in 1990, (and now no longer part of AB InBev) they are still in their original location with a very popular brew pub serving an eclectic menu of traditional brew pub fare. The vibe here is quaint ski town meets American brewpub; just about perfect. Still producing great beer, it’s a must-stop if you are in the area. The food is terrific too.

brewery tour in colorado

Note:  While you are in downtown Breckenridge, you may want to check out all of the other brewery-owned spots.  Two of the three other breweries that are on the tour for later today also have non-brewing taprooms on Main Street.  Here’s a walking map .

brewery tour in colorado

Next, on the north edge of town, you will find Broken Compass Brewing .  Broken Compass opened in 2014 and has since grown from a tiny little brewery and taproom off the beaten path to a must visit destination for both Breckenridge lifers and tourists alike.  They serve a wide variety of beers from IPAs to their beloved Coconut Porter.

This location is recognized for its pet-friendly environment, earning it the title of Best Pet Friendly Business in the 2023 Best of Summit competition . The brewery’s commitment to being dog-friendly is one of its main attractions, making it a place where patrons can socialize with their furry friends.

The main brewery on Airport Road even offers a shuttle to the tap room in downtown Breckenridge, noted above.

brewery tour in colorado

Heading back to Frisco, prepare to soak in the views from the comfort of the HighSide Brewing taproom while sipping on their diverse selection of beers.

Known for its adventurous spirit and dedication to the art of craft brewing, Highside has three locations in Colorado: Breckenridge, Frisco, and Fairplay (now the main production facility).  Highside Brewing offers beers ranging from dark to light, IPAs to sours, ensuring a broad appeal for tourists and locals alike. There are even a few high ABV beers for those that have already acclimated to the altitude.

The original location is in Frisco, situated at an altitude of 9000+ feet, (hydrate, hydrate, hydrate) and offers a taproom and patio. Enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, live music and excellent food from sister company, Colorado BBQ. Additionally, the Frisco location welcomes dogs, which adds to its community-friendly vibe.

brewery tour in colorado

The final stop of the day is at Outer Range Brewing .  Bursting onto the scene in 2016, Outer Range became widely known throughout Colorado for their outstanding Hazy IPAs. But don’t let the Hazy reputation scare you, they have an array of lagers and some tasty dark beers as well. Seemingly always packed, you may have to wait a minute in line, but the queue moves quickly and the team of beertenders is always willing to offer a splash of beer to help you make up your mind, (Pro Tip: just get a flight!). Inside there is also a coffee shop and a great fried chicken stand.

brewery tour in colorado

Saturday (5 breweries:  3 in Silverton, 1 in Keystone (plus a taproom) and 1 in Dillon)

Day Two Keystone to Silverthorne: Steep Brewing and Coffee Company , Pug Ryan’s Brewery , Dillon DAM Brewery , Syndicate Brewing, Angry James Brewing Company

Start at Steep Brewing and Coffee Company , they are open early as both a coffee shop and brew pub.

The owners Justin and Elissa, both Colorado natives, founded Steep with a vision to fill a niche in the market for handcrafted coffee and beer.

The brewery and coffee shop are popular and have a wide-range of beers and coffees, as well as breakfast and pizza options. Inside each location you will be welcomed by a après-ski meets lodge atmosphere that appeals to those looking for a quick breakfast before a mountain bike ride, or a refreshing pint after a fun day on the slopes. The interior features a mountain industrial vibe, with elements like a counter bar made from reclaimed semi-truck trailer decking and charred cedar finish walls, adding to the warm and inviting ambiance.

There are two locations, one in the River Run village , nearly slope-side and the main facility is about five minutes away. Both have a great selection of beers, fresh coffee and Pizza. Start early and get some breakfast, you will need it for the next parts of the tour. Note that the village outpost has seasonal hours and is closed during parts of Mud Season, so be sure to double check.

brewery tour in colorado

Your next stop can be Pug Ryan’s Brewery ; a short drive from Keystone in Dillon. It is one of the old-guard breweries, established in 1996. Pug Ryan’s has a storied history of serving the community with a variety of American cuisine and delicious craft beers.

Pug Ryan leans into Dillon’s Old West history, which is reflected in the décor. The brewery is a great spot to refuel after a day of adventure or a quick stop on your crawl. They offer two decks with views of the mountains and lake, providing a perfect setting for dining al fresco.

If you are traveling with non-beer geeks, the brewery is not just limited to beers, they also have a full bar; plus a tiki bar location open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, where you can enjoy cocktails and food right next to Lake Dillon.

brewery tour in colorado

Another short ride and you are at Dillon DAM Brewery , right by Christy Sports on the highway between Keystone and Silverthorne. This is another of the great breweries that has survived several years of changes in the Colorado brewing community. The Dam brewery showcases the traditional American brewpub style with a large wrap-around bar, lots of TVs and the brew house is visible from all over the restaurant. They are family friendly and have an extensive menu with something for everyone.

brewery tour in colorado

Depending on where you park, (Dillon Dam Brewery doesn’t have a ton of parking) you can also walk to Syndicate Brewing in a handful of minutes. Syndicate is one of Summit County’s new breweries. They offer a diverse range of beers, from light lagers to robust porters and hoppy West Coast IPAs. The brewery also makes an effort to include gluten-free options in its selection.

The brewery was created from the founders’ love for home-brewing. Brad Danforth, one of the co-owners, initially started brewing in Breckenridge, CO, and over time the hobby became a passion. Danforth and his team decided to take the leap and purchase commercial brewing equipment, but unfortunately the pandemic impacted their dreams and initially they were only able to sell packaged beers, before opening their taproom in Silverthorne.

The brewhouse tap room is wide open, so people can see, and smell, the craft beer as it is made. The wood-bedecked bar is a terrific place to try a flight of Syndicate brews.

brewery tour in colorado

The last brewery for this part of the trip is Angry James Brewing , again in Silverthorne, (but on the other side of I-70). The brewery was established by AJ and his wife Darcy, who started their journey in 2014 and after a few years, Angry James Brewery opened its doors to the public in January 2018. There is always a great list of beers on tap, and the team is well-versed in helping you pick the best styles for your tastes.

Large indoor and outdoor space means plenty of places to enjoy a pint after some shopping at the outlet mall, or as a detour to avoid the east-bound traffic on I-70.

The name “Angry James” is somewhat misleading, as it implies a farce rather than an actual state of anger. There is nothing about the brewery that will make you anything but happy. The brewery is dedicated to making incredible beer, continuously working to surpass their own high standards. They focus on both honoring brewing traditions and looking towards innovation, ensuring that their range of beers offer quality in every sip.

brewery tour in colorado

With all of the Summit County breweries already included, I didn’t create a plan for Sunday.  Depending on which way you are traveling there are multiple options to visit on your way home.  If you are heading West, check out my Vail & Aspen Tour .  If you are heading East, I will soon be writing an article on the breweries in the Foothills, (such as Guanella Pass , Cabin Creek , Tommyknocker , and Westbound & Down ).

That’s it for this tour.  I hope you enjoy your trip to Summit County and all of the great breweries there.  If you take this tour or a similar route, please drop us a line and let us know how it went!

Breweries around the state are celebrating Colorado Pint Day

brewery tour in colorado

COLORADO (KRDO) -- Today, April 10th, marks the state's 9th annual 'Colorado Pint Day' with over 225 participating locations this year's event is the largest in Colorado history.

The Colorado Brewers Guild started 'Colorado Pint Day' in 2016. Since then the holiday has developed a cult-like following even inspiring states like New York and Texas to follow suit.

Here's how it works: each year participating breweries sell limited-edition 'Colorado Pint Day' glasses. With each pint glass sold $1 is donated to support the guild's mission to promote independent craft breweries across the state. To find a brewery near you, click here.
